Cuisine Chinoise: Five Tales of Food and Life by Zao Dao
This graphic novel is a collection of short comics around the theme of food and Chinese folklore. It's illustrated on white and toned paper with a style that reflects the traditional art styles of China--very cool!
A couple of the stories are a bit hard to understand from a Western point-of-view, but many of them I really enjoyed (there's footnotes at the end of the book to explain some elements of the comics). I always love learning more about other cultures and their folklore, so I like it for all three levels I rate graphic novels upon: art style, story quality, and subject matter (and fun, of course).
FYI there's bug eating, snotty faces, and creepy yokai spirits--so its a bit gross out, but I'm kinda into that~
(Not that I wanna eat bugs and dumplings with old ladies' teeth heh)
All in all, this is a graphic novel like none I've read before. If you're looking to spice up your reading routine then I'd say look no further. I'm now a big fan of Zao Dao's work and am looking forward to anything they make in the future!
I give Cuisine Chinoise 4.5 out of 5 digssss~
(^that's me and the creepy fox yokai in the book, tantalizing you)
