CUC VS CUP #CubaInsider
Did you know that in Cuba two currencies are issued?
-          The CUC, convertible pesos, 1 CUC = 1 $
-          The CUP, Cuban pesos, 1 CUC = 25 CUP
 How to recognize them?
Banknotes: on all CUC, it says "convertible pesos" obviously, there is nothing written on CUP.
Tumblr media
Coins: On CUC landscapes and historic sites a represented while on CUP there is a star in the middle, Che and José Marti. Easy right?
Tumblr media
Where and when can you use CUC & CUP?
Do not rely on many guides that indicate that is better to pay in CUP whenever you can!
Tourists use almost CUC and try to understand why.
Price are displayed in CUC in: paladares (private restaurants), state restaurants, hotels and "casas particulares" (bed & Breakfasts), supermarkets, transport and tourism.
Price displayed in CUP: local public transports, local markets, fast food restaurants and in some state restaurants where few tourists go.
If you do not have CUP on you, some shops will accept your CUC and you will get the change in CUP. Others will ask you to get some CUP because they simply don’t have enough change.
Sometimes the price is displayed in CUC and CUP, you can use the currency you want and it will cost you the same thing, 1CUC = 25 CUP, you’ve got it? The only exception is for the cultural activities. Cubans can visit the touristic sites of their country for a cheaper price in CUC than tourists that pays in CUP. But you have to be Cuban or reside in Cuba to get these rates. So tourists will pay more for the touristic attractions in CUC, but nothing compared to the price you are used to pay in your country.
Good to know: tourists can easily obtain CUP in "casa de cambio", Cubans will tell you where the nearest one is located. Clémence.

Let's go to Havana countryside: Viñales! #CubaInsider
A three hour drive from Havana is enough to make you discover this little paradise. Viñales is a small village in the middle of a wide plain of tobacco fields and beautiful hills, called mogotes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mogotes were created by erosion 160 billion years ago, during the Jurassic area and make the landscape wonderful and an atmosphere of complete serenity. It is the perfect place to get some fresh air, horse ride, visite natural caves, learn more about cigars universe and meet authentic guarijos! (Translate Cuban cowboy)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Let me introduce you Umberto.
Tumblr media
Umberto, 42 years old, guarijo as his father was and as his son will be. 30 caws, 8 horses, 2 colleagues who are his brothers, 3rd wife, passionate by cigares and his work in the fields, many stories to tell, from the sadness to the funiest and a huge smile fixed on his face. Umberto is a real guarijo, wearing rubber boots, old jean, cowboy hat and cigar in pocket.
He is my guide for a horse ride tour. He makes me visit the fields of magnoca, tobacco, rice and malanga, explaining me the secrets of these cultures. A first break in an impressive cave, a second one in one of the numerous casas de tobacco, the first business of the region, and the sun is already setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks Umberto to make me discover your universe and your cigare passion, now I want to know more about it!
Viñales, to-do list & tips:
- horse riding or bike tour around the valley with a guarejo,
- visit the Cueva del Indio or Cueva de San Miguel,
- have a sunset break and drink a cocktail at the Hotel Los Jasmines, the perfect mirador to enjoy the view of the Viñales Valley (carretera a Viñales, km 25, phone number: 48796205),
- have a meal at Paladar La Terraza located just before The Hotel Los Jasmines, enjoying the same wonderful view (52238629),
- dance salsa at the Centro cultural Polo Montañez (in the central place, next to the Church)
- no problem to find a "casa particular" (Cuban bed&breakfast), even if Viñales looks surprisingly and hopefully under-developped for tourism, more and more casas are opening (however, it is maybe better to avoid the high season from November to March),
- oh, I almost forget: have a look at the Mural de la Prehistoria and give me your opinion!
  Clémence.
