La Belle Endormie
At 4am my Uber picked me up and drove me to East Croydon Station. My driver was a nice chap. He had spent many years living in Hounslow before moving to Heathrow. I didn't ask him why he was doing taxi runs to Gatwick and not Heathrow, but I guess that they must be more profitable.
We arrived at East Croydon station just before 4:45am. To my dismay my train wasn't displayed on the schedule board. The lady in the ticket office enlightened me that my train was running and that it would be departing from platform 6.
The train arrived on time and then took a very slow journey to Gatwick. It was packed with tourists who were on their way to Gatwick airport and clubbers who were catching the early morning train back to South London. I took a seat opposite a party goer who was in a deep sleep with their head down on the table. At Purley, the man picked up his McDonalds bag and then hastily exited the train. I was impressed that he didn't miss his stop. The train continued to Horley where it stopped for eternity. Well, 20 minutes to be precise. The train then moved slowly towards Gatwick Airport. Then train took nearly an hour but did arrive on time. Unfortunately the journey was made uncomfortable by a passenger who decided to eat a mega bag of crisps and continously rustle the packet. It seems petty, but at 4:30am, there really was no need for it.
I navigated my way through the airport and enjoyed in a Full English Breakfast before taking my seat in the departures lounge. The flight to Bordeaux was comfortable and took around 1 hour 30 minutes. Soon enough, I was through border control and officially in France.
I exited the airport and discovered an electric tram which goes into the heart of the city. I tried to buy a ticket for the tram using my credit card. It didn't work. After multiple attempts and some passive aggressive whistling from those in the queue behind. I decided to use cash. The tram was quiet, spacious and clean. As we traversed the cities streets, modern apartments gave way to old stone buildings. The journey took just over 45 minutes.
The train stopped in the city centre and we were told to alight. Disorientated, I wandered around the busy streets of the foreign city before I discovered a Vietnamese restaurant advertising Bánh's in the window. Tired and hungry I took a seat at the bar at the front of the restaurant. I ordered a Bánh and a Vietnamese coffee. The coffee was delightful but the Bánh wasn't what I expected. I was expecting a Bánh mì. This was Bánh, but of a different kind. Regardless, it still tasted great.
I wandered around the city and under the Grosse Cloche, an 18th Century bell tower before a found the riverside. I sat down and enjoyed the views of the River Garonne before heading south towards Sainte-Croix, the district by the station where I was staying. The centre of Bordeaux is predominately white whilst the streets of Sainte-Croix are ethnic. The majority of its inhabitants are from Frances former North African colonies. It was a vibrant area if not chaotic at times. In many French cities, people lead parallel lives. The wealthier white Europeans dominates the city centres whilst migrants live in a surrounding inner city areas, there is limited integration.
Soon enough, I found my hotel and rested for the afternoon. The 4am start had taken it out of me. After a nap and a shower I made my way back into the city centre along the riverside. A couple of kilometres up the river I discovered the Miroir d'eau and the Place de la Bourse. The Miroir a'eau is what it says on the tin. A large pool of shallow water which reflects the buildings which surround the Place de la Bourse. To make the landmark more atmospheric, smoke is released, and it drifts across the water mirror. It all mades for an excellent photo opportunity. In fact the entire riverside makes for a fantastic photo opportunity. The riverside was once dominated by large warehouses which stored wine and other goods. In the 1990's they were pulled down and a beautiful walkway and gardens were established in their place.
I walked the streets trying to find somewhere to eat. Many of the restaurants were busy and some not very inviting. Perhaps I was just tired. Thankfully I found a welcoming Japanese restaurant called Bogi. I had a great meal which was accompanied by a pint of Asahi and followed by mochi ice cream (frozen ice cream). Surprisingly the most fascinating part of the whole restaurant experience was the toilet. It resembled a night club and came completed with a self tripod and ring light, just in case you feel like vlogging whilst you are in the loos. There is no stopping these influencers.
I tried to find a pub for another pint. Ideally, one which had live music or where there was something happening. I found one called the Charles Dickens and like the author, it was dead. Not far away I stumbled on a live music venue called Road House, but again there was little going home. To be fair, it was a Sunday night.
I took a seat by the riverside and tried to enjoy a bottle of beer. Frustratingly, I couldn't open it because I didn't have a bottle opener. After trying to break the seal on a bin, fences and step, I gave in and brought an overpriced bottle opener. Take two! I sat by the river and watched the cities lights dance in The Garonne.

Traveling from London to Gatwick Airport: Options and Tips
Gatwick Airport, located near Crawley in West Sussex, is a bustling hub for London travellers embarking on journeys for both business and leisure across the globe. As the second busiest airport in the country after Heathrow, Gatwick offers an extensive range of destinations, including popular cities like New York and Hong Kong.
For London-based passengers looking to catch a flight from Gatwick Airport, various transportation options are available from the capital city. In this article, we'll explore the convenient ways to travel from London to Gatwick Airport and provide tips to make your journey smoother.
Driving by Car
For those who prefer the freedom of travelling by car, Gatwick Airport is easily accessible from the M23 motorway. It is advisable to book parking in advance to secure a spot and streamline your departure.
Train
The Gatwick Express is the fastest and most efficient train service connecting London to Gatwick Airport.
This non-stop train service departs from London Victoria and reaches the airport in approximately 30 minutes. Trains operate twice an hour, offering a convenient schedule for travellers. While tickets typically cost around £20, the speed and convenience of the Gatwick Express are well worth the price.
In addition to the Gatwick Express, other train operators like Thameslink and Southern also provide services between London and Gatwick Airport. Thameslink trains depart from London Bridge, St Pancras, Blackfriars, and Luton Airport, while Southern trains operate from London Victoria via Clapham Junction and East Croydon. These options might take slightly longer, but they can offer more budget-friendly fares compared to the Gatwick Express.
Oyster and contactless payment cards are accepted at the ticket gates for a seamless journey between London and Gatwick Airport.
National Express Coaches
National Express offers coach services to Gatwick Airport from various locations across the UK, including London.
The main departure point in London is London Victoria, and there are alternative options from Hammersmith and Paddington, with potential changes involved. Booking in advance can secure lower fares, with direct coaches from London Victoria costing less than £10.
Bus
In addition to National Express, several other bus services operate between London and Gatwick Airport.
One of the popular choices is easyBus, providing affordable fares from as low as £4 each way. Their airport transfer services take passengers directly from Gatwick Airport to central London via Waterloo, Victoria, or Earl’s Court.
megabus is another recommended option, operating services from various destinations, including London, to both the north and south terminals of Gatwick Airport.
Taxi from Gatwick
For a more personalized and door-to-door travel experience, taxi services are available for transportation to Gatwick Airport. Gatwick's own Airport Cars service is an option, and other taxi companies like 247 Gatwick Airport Transfer may also provide airport transfers. To avoid any additional fees, it is advisable to book your Gatwick taxi well in advance.
With multiple transportation options available, Londoners have the flexibility to choose the most suitable mode of travel to reach Gatwick Airport. Whether you opt for the swift Gatwick Express, budget-friendly coaches and buses, the convenience of driving, or the comfort of a taxi, planning ahead and selecting the right option will ensure a stress-free journey to catch your flight from Gatwick Airport.
