Common Causes of Chimney Fires and How Chimney Sweeping Can Prevent Them
Tumblr media
Chimney fires are a serious hazard that can cause extensive property damage and put your family鈥檚 safety at risk. Fortunately, routine chimney sweeping is an effective way to prevent these dangerous occurrences. By addressing common causes of chimney fires, a professional chimney sweep ensures your fireplace operates safely and efficiently. This article explores the primary factors that lead to chimney fires and how sweeping can mitigate these risks.
Creosote Buildup: The Leading Cause of Chimney Fires
Creosote, a byproduct of burning wood, is the most common cause of chimney fires. This sticky, tar-like substance coats the walls of your chimney and becomes highly flammable as it accumulates. Even a small spark or intense heat can ignite creosote deposits, leading to a dangerous fire.
A professional chimney sweep removes creosote buildup, reducing the risk of ignition. Scheduling regular cleanings ensures your chimney remains free of this hazardous substance.
Blockages and Debris in the Chimney
Leaves, bird nests, and other debris can accumulate in your chimney, creating blockages that restrict airflow. These obstructions not only prevent proper ventilation but also trap heat and sparks, increasing the likelihood of a fire. Blockages can also force smoke and toxic gases, like carbon monoxide, back into your home.
Regular chimney sweeping clears these blockages, ensuring proper airflow and reducing fire risks. A chimney sweep can also inspect for structural issues that might contribute to debris buildup.
Improper Use of Fireplaces or Wood-Burning Stoves
Burning unseasoned or wet wood generates more smoke and creosote, accelerating buildup in your chimney. Additionally, overloading the fireplace or using improper materials, like paper or cardboard, can create excessive heat and increase fire risks.
A chimney sweep can provide advice on proper fireplace usage and recommend best practices for minimizing creosote production.
Cracks and Structural Damage
Cracks in the chimney liner or masonry can allow heat and sparks to escape, igniting nearby combustible materials. Structural damage, such as loose bricks or a deteriorated liner, compromises the safety of your chimney.
During a chimney sweep, professionals inspect for cracks and damage, recommending repairs if necessary. Addressing these issues promptly helps prevent chimney fires and ensures the longevity of your chimney.
How Often Should You Schedule a Chimney Sweep?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends having your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year. If you use your fireplace frequently or notice signs of creosote buildup鈥攕uch as a strong, tar-like odor or reduced airflow鈥攎ore frequent cleanings may be necessary.
Regular chimney sweeping not only prevents chimney fires but also improves the overall efficiency of your fireplace or stove.

How Traditional Techniques Shaped the Modern Chimney Sweep
Tumblr media
The chimney sweep has been a vital part of home maintenance for centuries, evolving from humble beginnings to incorporate cutting-edge technology. While today鈥檚 chimney sweeping methods are highly advanced, they owe much to the traditional techniques that laid the groundwork for modern practices.
The Origins of Chimney Sweeping In earlier times, chimney sweeps relied on basic tools such as hand brushes, scrapers, and rods to clear soot and debris. These manual techniques required exceptional skill and endurance, as sweeps often had to navigate tight spaces and tall structures to ensure a thorough clean. Despite their simplicity, these methods were highly effective and played a crucial role in preventing chimney fires.
Innovation in Manual Tools Over time, traditional tools were refined to improve efficiency. The introduction of longer, more flexible rods allowed sweeps to reach deeper into the chimney, while improved brushes made it easier to dislodge stubborn soot and creosote. These innovations marked the first steps toward more efficient cleaning processes.
From Tradition to Technology The foundations of modern chimney sweeping lie in these early practices. Today鈥檚 techniques, such as rotary brush systems and power sweeping, build on the principles of traditional methods while leveraging advanced technology for greater precision and efficiency. Modern chimney sweeps also use cameras to inspect chimneys, identifying hidden issues that would have been difficult to spot using older techniques.
Why Traditional Methods Still Matter While technology has revolutionized chimney sweeping, the core principles of thoroughness and attention to detail remain unchanged. Many aspects of traditional chimney sweeping are still relevant, especially for older or uniquely designed chimneys that require a more hands-on approach.

Clearing Chimney Creosote in Odem: Best Methods and Tips
Living in Odem means enjoying the warmth and comfort of a fireplace during the cooler months. However, with regular use comes the inevitable buildup of creosote in your chimney. Creosote, a byproduct of burning wood, can pose serious hazards if left unattended, including chimney fires and poor indoor air quality. In this blog post, we'll explore the best methods and tips for effectively clearing chimney creosote in Odem, ensuring your fireplace remains safe and efficient.
Understanding Chimney Creosote:
Before delving into removal methods, it's crucial to understand what chimney creosote is and why it poses a risk. Creosote is a highly flammable substance that accumulates in chimneys as a result of burning wood. It can take on various forms, including a sticky residue, flakes, or hardened deposits. Over time, creosote buildup restricts airflow, increases the risk of chimney fires, and decreases the efficiency of your fireplace.
Best Methods for Chimney Creosote Removal:
Professional Chimney Cleaning Services: Hiring a certified chimney sweep is often the most effective and safest way to remove creosote buildup. These professionals have the expertise and specialized equipment to thoroughly clean your chimney, ensuring that all creosote deposits are removed.
Mechanical Cleaning Tools: Chimney brushes and rods are commonly used to mechanically remove creosote from chimney walls. These tools, when used correctly, can break up and dislodge creosote deposits, making them easier to remove.
Chemical Cleaners: Chemical chimney cleaners are available for homeowners looking to tackle creosote buildup themselves. These cleaners work by breaking down creosote into a less flammable form, making it easier to sweep away. However, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and use these products with caution.
Tips for Effective Creosote Removal:
Regular Chimney Inspections: Schedule annual chimney inspections to identify creosote buildup early on. Prompt removal can prevent potential hazards and extend the life of your chimney.
Burn Seasoned Wood: Burning seasoned hardwood produces less creosote compared to green or unseasoned wood. Avoid burning wet or resinous wood, as it can contribute to faster creosote buildup.
Use Proper Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when using your fireplace to promote efficient combustion and reduce creosote formation.
Install a Chimney Cap: A chimney cap acts as a barrier against moisture and debris, helping to prevent creosote buildup. It also keeps animals and birds from nesting in your chimney.
Conclusion:
Clearing chimney creosote in Odem is essential for maintaining a safe and efficient fireplace. Whether you opt for professional chimney cleaning services or DIY methods, regular maintenance is key to preventing creosote-related hazards. By following the best methods and tips outlined in this blog post, you can enjoy the warmth of your fireplace with peace of mind, knowing that your chimney is clean and safe.

2023 is such an interesting year for Burning Man. 70,000 (depending on the source, otherwise it's 'tens of thousands') people are stranded, finding out that deserts and rain are messy af. Environmental activists from Europe protested Burning Man, but were removed by Tribal Police due to trespassing on Piute land and disrupting traffic on the Rez. The protestors were trashing the place and while it's unsure as to whether they were going to start a fire (NOT a great time for fires, considering how dry it had been - brush fires spread like crazy with that much dry creosote everywhere), but they did not bring water.
It's like Mother Nature said she's sick of everyone's shit, and Paiutes said they are sick of white people making a mess on their land and fucking up their traffic flow to protest other white people damaging the environment at Black Rock.

February Book Reviews: Where the Axe Is Buried by Ray Nayler
Tumblr media
I received a free copy of the book from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in exchange for a fair review. Publish date April 1st.
I requested this book since I enjoyed Nayler's previous novel, The Mountain in the Sea. In Where the Axe Is Buried, the world is split between a Federation ruled by an immortal series of cloned presidents, and nations governed by AI. Programmer Lilia's new invention sets in motion a series of events, from an assassination attempt on the President to the recruitment of an elderly revolutionary living in the taiga, which will change the world irrevocably.
Where the Axe Is Buried is a much more explicitly political book than The Mountsin in the Sea. It's structured in much the same way, with multiple interlinked but separate POV characters interspersed by excerpts from a fictional book, revolutionary Zoya's banned text. Here, the central metaphor is the creosote bush rather than the octopus. The creosote bush forms a system of genetically identical cloned plants, following the root systems of long dead Ice Age trees. Like a flawed governing system, removing the piece of the creosote will not change the shape of the overall plant, dictated by patterns laid down centuries ago. We get the anecdote as a piece of Zoya's book on the very first page, and it recurs as different metaphors--a fungal system, a steppe tsar--throughout the book.
It's always a bit tricky to write a book about revolution. Nayler's a very good writer, and he easily dodges the trap that so many books about war and revolution fall into (ie, mouthing empty platitudes about change as the authors demonstrate that they haven't thought deeply about a complex and loaded subject). Nayler's elegantly constructed near future dystopia is split between an authoritarian future Russian regime and countries ruled by supposedly infallible AIs in a very post LLM way. On the one hand, the Federation has developed refinements that the Soviets or even Orwell never dreamed of, in a panopticon where a tiny mistake could collapse your social score and send you plummeting into a shrinking circle of restricted parole, and then to a forced labor camp and death. Or, alternatively, in the rationalized states ruled by AI, you can work in an horrifically optimized Amazon-style warehouse while your every movement is scrutinized by companies trying to sell you things, to the degree that looking at a soda half a world away for a moment with your face covered can identify you.
Whether Nayler threads the other needle and manage to not say something about revolution which the reader has a strong personal disagreement with is, inevitably, more individual. It held together well enough to be a five star read for me, even if I'd quibble with a few points. Although I do think the open ended conclusion carries a lot of the rhetorical weight here. Nayler gracefully presents you with a possibility for change, rather than attempting to answer the unanswerable question.
An ambitious and sophisticated dystopia about revolution with a compulsively readable pacing. Highly recommended, especially if you liked Nayler's The Mountain in the Sea.

2024-08-25: Hex 25 (Shrubland)
Stiff branches groan in protest against the wind; the occasional strong gusts breaking smaller branches off and exposing their sweet sap to the air. Most noticeable, however is the smell of oil from the oil field, and the creosote on the telegraph poles running through the hex.
Notable Feature: Resource (Oil Field)
A large black patch of land in this hex indicates a shallow oil deposit that is flowing up to the surface. Oil barons have already surveyed the site and decided that it wasn't productive enough to warrant the installation of an oil derrick. However, the area still produces a small amount of crude oil on its own each day.
Using a barrel and a coarse filter to remove impurities, the field can fill 1 barrel each day. The barrel collection process does not require supervision, and any excess will merely overflow on the ground. If additional barrels are placed in the field, every barrel beyond the first captures only 1/4 barrel each day. The oil can be sold to certain merchants, but can also be used as a fire accelerant, lubricant, or source of smoke for signaling.
Hidden: Schoolhouse Raid
A rickety one-room schoolhouse for rural children is host to the school's caretaker, a flighty and easily-startled man named Reggie Dupree. The schoolhouse is constructed in a remote area because it was established by the ILF to teach the bits of history that have been banned from the curriculum by Carrowian decree. The Carrowian loyalists discovered the schoolhouse and abducted the schoolteacher, Ms. Jacqueline Hebert. She is being held and interrogated as a dissident in a small military prison two hexes to the south (outside the sandbox). Reggie asks the party to try to rescue Jacqueline so they can move the schoolhouse and keep instructing the children to continue the fight until the swamp is liberated.
Secret: This Line Is Tapped
A traveling telegraph lineman (Hugo Samson) who is in charge of repairing breaks in the remote sections of line is getting tired of all the travel associated with his job. He can be found in any hex with accessible telegraph lines (100% chance for settlements and any hex with a rail line, as well as this hex; 2-in-6 chance otherwise). He's willing to trade jobs with anyone for a few days so he can have a change of pace. Anyone who accepts the trade is given a lineman's kit, which can tap into telegraph lines to verify they are sending and receiving messages.
If someone with a lineman's kit taps the telegraph lines in in this hex (Hex 25), one of the first messages they will intercept is a notice regarding the upcoming repositioning of Regulator troops. They are going to be marching out to Hex 11 and preparing for a major push toward capturing territory on the north side of the river (Hex 10 and above). However, this notice is a trap used by the Gate, hoping that the ILF has sympathetic telegraph operators who will relay that information to people who make strategic decisions within the ILF. The actual troop movements are quiet different, and designed to ambush the ILF who act on the information.
If the party is able to relay this information to a high-level ILF member or inform the Gate that their message was intercepted, the party will be permanently excluded from any discussions regarding military secrets, and any future information (even if true and verifiable) will not be accepted from the party.

How Annual Chimney Inspections Help Prevent Chimney Fires
Tumblr media
Chimney fires are a serious hazard that can cause extensive damage to your home and put your family at risk. Fortunately, regular chimney inspections play a crucial role in preventing these dangerous incidents. Here鈥檚 why scheduling an annual inspection is essential for fire safety.
Understanding the Risk of Chimney Fires Over time, burning wood produces creosote鈥攁 sticky, highly flammable substance that clings to the inner walls of your chimney. If left unchecked, this buildup can ignite and lead to a chimney fire. Even a small amount of creosote can pose a significant risk, especially in chimneys that are used frequently.
How Annual Inspections Make a Difference A professional chimney inspection helps identify and address creosote buildup before it becomes a danger. During the inspection, experts also check for other potential fire hazards, such as blockages or structural damage, which could compromise the chimney鈥檚 safety and efficiency.
Spotting Structural Issues Early Cracks in the chimney lining, loose bricks, or deteriorating mortar can create hotspots that increase the risk of fire. An annual chimney inspection ensures that these issues are detected and repaired promptly, maintaining the structural integrity of your chimney.
Ensuring Proper Ventilation Obstructions like bird nests, debris, or soot can block the chimney flue, restricting airflow and trapping heat. This not only affects the performance of your fireplace but also raises the risk of chimney fires. Regular inspections ensure your chimney is clear and functioning properly.
Peace of Mind for Your Home By scheduling annual chimney inspections, you can enjoy your fireplace with confidence, knowing that potential fire risks are under control. It鈥檚 a simple yet effective step to safeguard your home and loved ones.

Mission Statement of the Creosote Collective
The aim of the Creosote Collective is twofold. The first is to remove the state and other forms of social domination that accompany it from both our lives, the lives of our communities, and the ecology that surrounds us. The second is to create space for the formation of non-hierarchical political and social structures that empower our fellow humans not only to develop a variety of free modes of existence but also to promote a new relationship with the ecological world around us and discover our place within it as stewards.
Our tactics, guided by ideals rooted in anarchism, social ecology, decolonization, Black liberation, anti-racism, queer liberation, feminism, and the ongoing struggles of the oppressed are fundamentally anti-authoritarian, always seeking to collaborate and organize within the movements of the oppressed. Both to advance our common struggle and to establish a network of libertory structures that foster new bonds of solidarity, autonomy and freedom in our communities and beyond, rather than rebuilding new chains of command and obedience.
These structures come in the form of neighborhood councils, mutual aid groups, free schools, community gardens, worker cooperatives, and a variety of other modes that not only seek to challenge existing power structures but also to cultivate an ecosystem that takes care of one another in the present. While many of these formations are limited under our current system of domination, we see within them outlines of a free society and a urgently needed contrast to a world of ever-growing authoritarianism and estrangement. It is upon these foundations that we envision the development of a free society.

In The News
The Washington Department of Natural Resources said the 80-100-year-old pilings were soaked in a preservative that leaked out into the water, causing harm to salmon and forage fish and traveling up the food web.
"Once they get exposed to the creosote it goes into the food chain, through that avenue it makes its way all the way up to our whales," DNR Aquatics Restoration Manager Christopher Robertson said. "When they do look at the toxins that are inside of whale blubber, PAH which is the primary toxin from creosote, is one of the primary ones that's found there, so it really does impact the whole food web, from the base up."
