I actually really like the way that for Being Human (US) part of why Aiden drinks from the blood bank (which is part of why he's a nurse) is because when vampires drink from a live person they basically get high or drunk and run a high risk of killing the person.

And since he's not a vampire supremacist and doesn't *enjoy* hurting people he doesn't work with the vampire clan so he doesn't have access to a cleaner who can dispose of the body should he fuck up.

For whatever reason bagged blood doesn't have the same effect but it's apparently also very bad tasting. He also tries to drink as little as possible to the degree that he's basically always near starving.

I like all the drama that it forces as he loses access to the blood bank or accidentally hurts someone or has to sprint out of the room so he doesn't just tear into someone's throat.

I know that’s kind of the go-to thing to show that a vampire character is “one of the good ones” or whatever but it actually seems a little bit more fucked up for a vampire to steal blood from a blood bank than for a vampire to attack people for blood, at least as long as it’s not the kind of vampire where a bite is instantly lethal like it never stops bleeding. 

People can recover from losing some blood but blood bank blood is constantly in short supply and is reserved for people who imminently need blood transfusion of a specific blood type or else they die.
