Cetacean euthanasia
Some interesting things reading on cetabase. SeaWorld has before euthanised cetaceans, as early as 1986. Most were bottlenose dolphins, one pseudorca and two beluga whales.
Ceta Base They are: SWC: Spray (1996), Zippy (1999), Jethro (1990), Scarback (2010), Nukilik (1990), DL-7905 (1986), Bodine (2014) SWT: Kai (2014) SWF: Suki (2005), Bunny (2007) Discovery Cove: Jenny (2016) All are bottlenose with the exception of Suki (pseudorca), Nukilik (beluga) and DL-7905 (beluga).
Why orcas haven’t really been euthanised before, is the question. Were they too big? Had it gone wrong in the past and were they afraid? Were higher ups blocking any euthanasia for orcas? We don’t know and we can only speculate.
Then theres this (click) paper discussing euthanising stranded cetaceans from NOAA. SeaWorld and Hubbs SeaWorld have also participated in this study.
We specifically want to acknowledge the Prescott Grant Cetacean Euthanasia Working Group who contributed their time and expertise to the development of the products and final report.

Teri Rowles, Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program, NOAA Fisheries
It goes on mentioning types of euthanasia: Chemical Methods of Euthanasia and Physical Methods of Euthanasia. Orcinus Orca isn’t included in the paper, but it does list quite a few species. Overall interesting paper to read through.
