Alan J Smith, Washington state Inmate 381201, born 1976, incarceration intake in 2015 at age 39; sentenced to 28.6 years; scheduled release date not published

Murder

In Mach 2015, about 30 people packed into an Everett courtroom 5 to hear the sentencing of Alan Smith who was convicted of killing his estranged wife, Susann Smith, in Feb. 2013.   The 37-year-old mother of two was found face down in the bathtub in her Bothell home. She’d been repeatedly beaten before she was dragged into the bathroom and drowned.

Ultimately, Smith was sentenced to 28.6 years, minus time served, and 36 months of community custody after release from prison by Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Linda Krees. It was an intense and emotional hearing for all involved and Smith spoke to courtroom for on the second time during the past month.

Prosecutors alleged that Smith was angry because his divorce wasn’t going the way he wanted. He had racked up a large debt and feared that his wife was going to take their children to her native Germany.

Evidence showed that the killer carefully tried to cover his tracks. Bothell detectives never found the murder weapon, believed to be a rubber mallet.

Smith was arrested four months after the killing. A man he met at church reported that Smith confessed to the murder. Smith had sought the man’s advice on how to handle his then-girlfriend, a mentally ill woman. She later committed suicide.

The same court convicted Smith a month ealrier of premeditated murder in the first degree with a deadly weapon.

Craig Matheson, prosecutor, requested the 344-month sentence with 36 months of community custody, along with no contact with any of the witnesses who testified in the case and limited contact to he and Susann’s two children.

Alan Smith spoke on his own behalf, waiving the counsel he had been appointed. He question some of the fees being assessed, many required by statute, and the no contact with his children.

Smith has already served 20 months since his arrest on June 27, 2013. The court imposed the required fees, around $600.

Smith appealed his conviction.  The former Boeing engineer wasn’t able to convince the state Court of Appeals that his confession to a former pastor should have been protected by the clergy-penitent privilege.

In his appeal, Smith argued that Snohomish County Superior Court Linda Krese shouldn’t have allowed the man’s testimony. Smith claimed that the man was acting as a member of the clergy, and therefore their conversation was privileged. The man reported Smith’s comments to police when he couldn’t convince him to surrender to police.

The man had been an associate pastor at a Tacoma church but left and joined another church, where he was part of the congregation, but not a member of the clergy.

The Royal Family have united at a Christmas concert hours after the controversial documentary came to a conclusion this morning.

Kate Middleton is hosting the concert at Westminster Abbey in London, where royals will come together for the festive event.

The concert will be broadcast as part of Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, a special programme narrated by Catherine Zeta Jones, which will air on ITV1 at Christmas Eve.

The special Christmas service is dedicated to the late Queen and will recognise the selfless efforts of individuals, families and communities across the UK.

A synopsis for the show outlines that the service aims to dedicate the late monarch and the values that she demonstrated throughout her life, including “duty, empathy, faith, service, kindness, compassion and support for others.”

It adds: “These principles are shared and personified by the inspirational guests who have been invited to the Abbey in recognition of their tireless work to help and care for those around them.”

Prince William, King Charles, Camilla, The Queen Consort, and other members of the Royal Family will be in attendance.

Kate looked incredibly festive in a beautiful fit and flare plum V-neck style dress for the evening.

She matched her look with a pair of suede heeled shoes and a glittery clutch bag, and accessorised her look with what appeared to be drop ruby gem earrings.

With her brunette locks styled into bouncy blow dried curls, she smiled at crowds who were gathered by the Abbey in London as she was pictured walking past a row of lit Christmas trees.

Following her arrival, other members of the family were pictured attending the venue.

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, and her sister Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi followed into the church.

Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, was then seen entering, wearing an elegant white trench coat.

The Abbey is filled with festive decorations to provide a beautiful Christmas backdrop and some of the nation’s most beloved carols, including O Come, All Ye Faithful, will be sung.

There will be performances from Craig David, Alexis Ffrench and Samantha Barks, and a special duet from Alfie Boe and former Spice Girl Melanie C.

Readings from Prince William, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Hugh Bonneville and Kadeena Cox have also been organised.

As well as this, the broadcast will feature additional content, including an introduction from Kate, as well as films highlighting individuals who have gone above and beyond to support others this year, and tributes to the Queen.

Kate recently published a behind-the-scenes filming picture on The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Twitter account.

Wearing a sequin-covered Aurora Ballerina Dress from Needle & Thread that she debuted at a Buckingham Palace reception in January 2020, the Princess stood in front of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree as she beamed at the camera.

The princess wore her hair in loose curls and rocked the same dangling ruby Soru earrings she wore the first time she sported the dress.

She captioned the post:

Social media users have taken to express their joy at Kate hosting the Carol concert again this year, as well as complimenting how "lovely" she always looks.

Event’s fate is still up in the air

Nearly two years after midflight crash killed 6, federal inquiry nears end

The federal investigation of the midair collision between two World War II-era aircraft that killed six experienced crewmen in front of a large crowd in Dallas almost two years ago is nearing a close, while the fate of the air show remains undecided.

The National Transportation Safety Board launched an investigation soon after the crash between a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra during the Commemorative Air Force’s annual Wings Over Dallas event at Dallas Executive Airport.

The victims

The crash on Nov. 12, 2022, killed Terry Barker, Craig Hutain, Kevin Michels, Dan Ragan, Lloyd “Len” Root and Curtis Rowe. No one else was injured.

Though the NTSB has not yet published a cause for the crash, some information tied to the collision has been released, including the NTSB’s preliminary report, the air traffic control recording from moments before the collision, and roughly 2,000 pages of documents tied to the investigation.

The status of the investigation is listed as “ongoing” on the agency’s website.

In the days after the crash, the agency said the investigation would be a “long process” with the final report likely to take 12 to 18 months to complete. Now, officials say the report is likely to be published closer to the two-year mark.

“We are in the final stages of that investigation,” an NTSB spokesperson wrote in an email last week. “The accident report is expected to be published in the coming weeks.”

The aftermath

Wings Over Dallas, first held in 2016, hasn’t resumed since the crash, and no decision has been made on whether it will.

The Commemorative Air Force hosted its annual Veterans Day event without an air show last year, restructuring it to have more of a festival atmosphere.

The event, deemed Aviation Discovery Fest, returned for a second year earlier this month sans an air show.

More than 6,000 people attended both years.

Although organizers last year said they intended to bring back the air show in 2024 and although the organization hosts air shows throughout Texas, including the CAF Wings Over Houston air show the weekend beofe last this past weekend, the Commemorative Air Force has not determined whether it will resume hosting air shows in Dallas, the group’s vice president of marketing, Leah Block, said in an Oct. 28 email.

At least two lawsuits stemming from the crash are pending.

The wife and daughters of Len Root, a retired American Airlines pilot who was the copilot of the B-17 Flying Fortress, filed a lawsuit August 2023 in Dallas County against the Commemorative Air Force, American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum Inc. and American Airpower Heritage Museum Inc.

The mother, wife and sons of Terry Barker, also a former American Airlines pilot copiloting the Boeing aircraft, filed a lawsuit in Dallas County against the same defendants and air show boss days after Roots’ family, an online filing shows.

Both lawsuits are scheduled for a jury trial Aug. 12, 2025, according to online records.

New Tool May Make Autonomous Vehicles Safer and Smarter - Technology Org

The invention of autonomous vehicles has proven to be an exciting advancement in technology, but many remain apprehensive about their introduction into society due to safety concerns. The University of Nebraska–Lincln’s Dung Hoang Tran is working on a new solution to change that.

With the support of a new $529,041 grant from the National Science Foundation, Tran will continue his work on a verification tool that will make autonomous vehicles and other robotics machinery both safer and smarter.

Autonomous vehicles are able to operate in unfamiliar environments thanks to learning components that have been modeled after real-world scenarios and integrated into their systems. When so many components are combined with unpredictable and unprecedented factors in live environments, safety assessment and risk management can become quite challenging for engineers.

“We have to build a very complex mathematical and computational framework to be able to analyze a complex system like that,” Tran, assistant professor in the School of Computing, said. “When you design that type of system, the deep learning models might behave in a way that could lead your system into a scenario that you don’t want.”

As a doctoral student at Vanderbilt University, Tran created the Neural Network Verification tool, a type of safety verification software that is still currently and widely used by major companies in many industries, including Apple, Boeing and Toyota. Tran’s new tool will build on his previous work to provide engineers with much more comprehensive safety assessments and results.

Tran’s new tool will measure safety using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In addition to certifying that a system passes or fails safety tests, the new tool will also analyze the probability of risk involved to provide timely, detailed and accurate evaluations at the system level.

“In our new framework, we can also ask, ‘If it’s unsafe, then how unsafe?’” Tran said. “It models the uncertainty of the environment, and that is going to give you the probability of a specification or a requirement being violated, which is very important for decision making or control.”

Tran’s project will use the same novel language he developed for NNV, the probabilistic star temporal logic specification language. This language allows engineers to determine the requirements necessary for the system to behave correctly and safely. Tran and his team will then work to design efficient verification techniques and algorithms that measure the system safety against the requirements.

“If we cannot prove that the system is safe, then we need to generate what we call the ‘counter example,’ or the proof that system is actually unsafe,” Tran said. “Using these counter examples, we can then return the deep learning model or change the system’s design, which can enhance the system’s safety.”

After joining the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and becoming a co-director of the Nebraska Intelligent MoBile Unmanned Systems Lab in 2018, Tran began building a testbed in the lab to test robotics machinery and software. The learning-enabled F1TENTH testbed is a small-scale system used to create real-world scenarios for autonomous vehicles to evaluate their applicability, scalability, and reliability.

According to Tran, ensuring autonomous vehicle safety requires not only that they perform correctly as they’re designed, but also that they react intelligently when unplanned situations occur.

“Testing is not enough to guarantee the safety of the system when it works in the real world,” Tran said. “We want to make sure that the system itself has some internal decision-making process so that when something wrong happens inside the car, it can automatically figure out what’s going to happen next, then perform some smart decisions so it can prevent other problems.”

Tran said that he hopes to continue expanding work on his tool in the future and eventually create one that could be useful for other robotics developers, like his fellow NIMBUS researchers.

“The ultimate goal is that we’re going to build a software tool that everyone can use,” Tran said. “My dream is that I can build another tool that actually fits perfectly for robotics people, and they can adopt it very quickly. I believe that would make a huge impact.”
