Instead, the family was subjected to heckling and intimidation – influential members of the village, egged on by right-wing leaders had decided to take advantage of their vulnerability. They decreed that Shyamlal’s funeral would be allowed in the village on one condition: the family had to convert from Christianity to Hinduism and conduct the last rites according to Hindu rituals.

The grieving family were mobbed by right-wing supporters who told them they had no access to the cemetery in the village where the burials have been happening for all these years. “We are being targeted only because we chose to follow a particular faith. But you can follow whatever religion you want to follow. I have read that in the news,” says Sukmiti.

What’s more, “they wouldn’t even let us bury Shyamlal in our backyard,” she adds. “That’s where we had buried his grandmother. We thought the two could rest next to each other. But we were told we couldn’t do it because we stood up to them and refused to convert.”

Right-wing groups are targeting families that have lost their loved ones. One gram sabha even passed a resolution which disallowed cremation for the people following Christianity within the boundary of the village. Shyamlal’s last rites seemed like mere logistics. It was rushed through. “It felt like we didn’t send him off properly,” says the family.

“This is largely a post-covid phenomenon,” says Benjamin. “Before that, the right-wingers attempted to convert Christians to Hinduism using various methods, but death was respected by and large. Sadly, not anymore.”

The family stood its ground. Nag insisted on not giving into majoritarian pressure. “We own a three-acre farmland and what we do on it is our business,” he says. “We decided to bury her over there. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” The members of the Bajrang Dal eventually backed down and the burial went through without further disruptions. Even then, people were distracted, looking out for one while giving Aayati a respectable send-off. “Is it too much to expect peace while conducting last rites?” he asks. “Yes, we won that battle. But we don’t want our children growing up in this atmosphere. Even the village heads didn’t stand by us.”

The marginalisation of tribal Christians has been going on. “We aren’t allowed to fetch water from the common well in the village anymore,” Kosha says. “We have to do it clandestinely.”

Back in Arracote, Sukmiti says the family were not allowed to go to a wedding in a neighbouring village because it was a Christian family getting married: “The family had to throw away the food they had prepared for the guests because nobody could reach there.”

Despite the Constitution (Article 25) stating that “Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion,” tribal Christians are facing hostility and intimidation.

“The situation is such that when someone dies in a Christian family, our first reaction is fear and logistics, not grief. What sort of death is this?” she says.

Day Fifty-Three

The Monday after a long weekend can be tough, but this one went pretty well. I found a nice note from a student in my mailbox this morning, was able to grab chocolate chip pumpkin cookies (a perfectly acceptable breakfast food) in the staff room, and had a good chat with Mrs. T as she made the rounds during my prep time.

I kicked it old school in Global Studies: board notes to compare/contrast Hinduism and Buddhism, followed by an assignment about the Eightfold Path. It got students listening, writing, thinking, and asking questions- can't ask for more than that, right?- and I was pretty happy with how it went. I never know how well I'll be able to hold students' attention, especially in my first section, but I'm learning that joking around with them a little before the lesson goes a long way during it.

I was kind of old school in APGOV, too, since I was lecturing about economic policymaking, but I did it with slides, videos, and online articles, so I wasn't as low-tech as I was with the freshmen. As the last part of the lesson, I had them read about fiscal and monetary policy during the Covid crisis, and about the Fed raising interest rates to bring inflation down, so they could really get an understanding of how this kind policymaking looks in action. We had a terrific discussion, which lasted almost right up to the bell.

So I'm definitely happy with the student engagement today, for sure. Here's hoping there's more of the same through the rest of the week!

Okay, so I have been trying to work out what type of omen this is because I have nothing better to do.

I get that there is a strong desire to lump the jackdaws in with ravens because Odin had ravens (Huginn - thought, and Muninn - memory), and the goat is an offering to Thor, who, yes is the god of thunder, but is also tasked with protecting mankind. The goat not being destroyed signals a bad year (It survived 2019, then we got covid in 2020. It didn't burn in 2014, and Trump was elected in 2015. I could go on, but I feel like I made my case.), so burning/destroying the goat seems to signal the sacrifice to Thor being successful. Essentially, it's how we pay Thor protection money. with this in mind, It would symbolize Odin, the "all-father" and god of war, wisdom, healing, and death, coming to collect knowledge (specifically signaled by the birds) on behalf of Thor. This leads me to believe, if we analyze this from a Norse mythology exclusive end, lump all corvids together, and ignore the duck, we can interpret this as a sign that family or community will come together for the good of humanity.

Unfortunately, that interpretation requires us to ignore a lot of things, and make very loose connections, so let's break it down without sticking exclusively to Norse mythology. Literally the only thing we are keeping from the previous argument is that goat destroyed = good.

Jackdaws are incredibly intelligent (they can recognize different people's faces), loyal (they mate for life), and resourceful.

In many Christian cultures, due to the fact that they often nest in churches, Jackdaws are seen as holy protectors.

In Celtic mythology, the jackdaw is seen as a guide, and a symbol of good luck and transformation.

I am going to ignore the Greeks because they were stupid. They thought the jackdaw was a symbol of stupidity and hubris, and overall their idea of jackdaws doesn't line up with scientific facts about it's abilities. Greek mythology sucks and Aesop can suck it.

We are overlooking the singular duck helping to destroy the goat. Ducks are social creatures and they are very protective.

The migratory pattern of the duck has led many cultures to view them as symbols of transformation and transition.

The fact that ducks can fly and swim has contributed to them being associated with, again, transition and duality.

Celtic mythology views ducks as symbols of power. In fact, the duck is heavily associated with Sequana, a river goddess associated with healing.

In many eastern cultures, the duck is associated with love. In China in particular, it is heavily associated with romance. Hinduism often uses the duck as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity.

Okay, so the consistent themes with these two birds are intelligence, loyalty, transformation, and love. What are these birds doing to the goat, a symbol of tradition? They are destroying it (which is good for us) by transforming it into food, a symbol of togetherness, as most cultures use food to bring people together for celebration. They are taking something that is traditional and decorative, a symbol of hubris and vanity, and making it useful in a way that brings others together. In other words, I think this is a very good omen.

The birds eating the Gavle Goat are jackdaws, which are corvids, but not crows.

People also call the family corvidae the "crow family" but that family includes ravens, jays, rooks, magpies, etc. So, I guess you could call jackdaws crows if you really want to, but if you're going to do that you should commit to that classification and call bluejays crows as well.

The jackdaws are, however, very cute, and very good for taking up the mantle of destroying the goat.

I’d agree that representatives selected from party lists drawn up by capitalists, whether “state” or “corporate”, are hardly the best people to advance democracy.

As always a section of the people was complicit, with objectors subject to persecution, even martyrdom. The conclusion was always autocracy, though the derogation often proceeded in stages: firstly a simulacrum of religion, then a man-made legal structure somewhat imitating Divine law, and finally oppression and tyranny.

Day One Hundred Nineteen

Another one of my freshman- one I’ve written about before- was suspended for a week. I witnessed the altercation that led to it, and, whew, it was bad. These kids are so angry, and they’re so young to be so angry. 

I know there’s a lot of discourse about “post-covid kids,” but my colleagues think that the fire was already burning before covid hit- at least in our community, and probably in others, too. Covid was like pouring gasoline on the fire, for sure, but so many kids were already experiencing trauma due to the opioid crisis (the number of our students whose parents are dead, incarcerated, or otherwise incapable of caring for their children because of addiction is staggering), already spending huge chunks of their time in the violent ecosystem of social media and online gaming (no, I’m not saying video games make kids violent, I’m saying that many of the players they watch and interact with espouse violence, and they emulate those players), and already of the opinion- I’ve written this before- that the people in power in their country would be willing to let them die.

So I understand, to some extent, why they’re so angry. Understanding doesn’t make it any less tragic, or make it any easier to figure out what to do about it. I’m doing my best to make my classroom a safe, welcoming space- and to model compassion, kindness, calm, etc...- but this is so much bigger than me. It’s bigger than any of us. 

Meantime, teaching and learning go on. 

I showed my World students some video clips about Diwali and Holi, and shared some pictures one of our sophomores, who is in India right now with his family, sent from their Holi celebrations. Then we read an article about other traditions and customs related to Hinduism, students asked their customarily excellent questions (I love that about the students I have this semester), made observations, connected the information to other things they’d learned. That was great. 

My GOV students took a vocab quiz, and then we geeked out about natsec policy. I mean, mostly, it was me geeking out because this is my jam, but my students got into it, too. First, I explained the dominant theories in defense policy, explained who the primary policymakers are, gave some examples of policy in action (Afghanistan War, weapons sales to Saudi Arabia, security assistance to Ukraine). Then I covered trade policy, so I had to explain a lot of terminology first (tariffs, and subsidies, and sanctions- oh my!), and then we got into US farm subsidies, free trade agreements, the US-China trade war, and- again- the war in Ukraine. We stuck on that subject because we have a guest joining us via videoconference on Monday: Matt Gallagher- US army vet, author, and recent volunteer defense trainer in Ukraine. We read one of his recent pieces together, and talked about it until the bell.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Across The Spider-verse ( #AcrossTheSpiderverse ) or volume/chapter2 , had the let-down ending of having 2 wait till volume/chapter3(very next sequel) 2 know how story ends. It sucks b/c thats at least another year, another year of getting older.

No work, low on food: Spotlight on Seema Haider brings woes for Sachin's family

Seema Haider and her lover Sachin, who recently moved into a new house in Greater Noida, have been facing a shortage of food. They have written a letter to the police to seek help.

A new video showing difficulties faced by Seema Haider and Sachin Meena after they moved to a new house in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida has surfaced. The couple is struggling to make ends meet as they have been facing shortages of food and other necessary items.

With no job, Sachin and his family have been facing a tough time. In an interview with India Today, Seema said she was upset about the problems that arose for her husband’s parents due to her, referring to the probe into her illegal entry into the country.

Talking about the probe on her, Seema told India Today that she was distressed about the troubles that Sachin’s family was going through because of the investigation.

Seema Haider crossed the border from Pakistan to India illegally to marry her lover Sachin, with whom she met through the online mobile game PUBG. Since she was caught by the police on July 4, Seema has been under the radar of security agencies over the suspicion of being a Pakistani spy.

Master Swaraj, National President of Bharatiya Kisan Union Lok Shakti met the couple on Saturday at their new Rabupura home in Greater Noida.

“I came to meet Sachin Meena and Seema Haider. They have moved to a new place but have been facing problems as they are trapped in their own home. A long queue of media personnel constantly waits outside their house, making it difficult for them to step outside and purchase items of daily use. The couple told me that we are constantly under the radar of police,” the farmer leader said.

Sachin’s father also explained various difficulties faced by them and he was advised by the farmer leader to write a letter to a local Station-House-Officer (SHO) so that the matter could be taken up with the higher authorities.

“Sachin and his father can now go out to look for a job after informing Rabupura police. The couple still lives in Rubapura and the entire village stands with them,” a letter written to SHO reads.

Seema Haider, a 30-year-old Pakistani woman, said she fell in love with Sachin Meena, a 22-year-old Indian man living in the Rabupura area of Greater Noida, while playing PUBG during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Seema, who was already married to Ghulam Haider and has four children with him, decided to leave Pakistan and cross the border into India illegally to be with Sachin.

She first met Sachin in Nepal in March and the two reportedly got married as per Hindu rituals after Seema converted to Hinduism. They then entered India through Nepal on May 13 with her children.

On July 4, Seema was arrested for sneaking into India and detained Sachin and his father for providing her shelter. Though released on bail a few days later, the couple were being questioned by probe agencies.

Meanwhile, Seema’s estranged husband Ghulam, who works in Saudi Arabia, wished to reunite with his wife and children. Seema, however, has said she does not want to go back to Pakistan and wants to live with Sachin.
