Skeptic meets ryncol (~2000 words)

I have one other Skeptic fragment; figured I might as well share, so here it is. In this installment, we answer an incredibly-pressing scientific question, “what happens if you get a Reaper drunk?”

Oh, also, CW for alcohol, as a note for anyone for whom that’s an issue...

(As a very quick aside, to answer a couple of questions that I saw during the previous reblogs - no, all of this is non-canon. I’d argue it makes no less sense than most of canon!ME3, of course, but no, there is no Skeptic anywhere in ME3. Rather, this project - such as it was - assumed an alternate ending to the Leviathan DLC, where there actually was a Reaper at the end of it, instead of the rather-peculiar and rather-forced swerve that we got.)

(The two major problems with this project were that a) Skeptic started displacing the canon cast, which wasn’t really what I’d had in mind, and b) I really couldn’t stop it from sometimes getting very camp/crack-fic-like. As you can see with this fragment, it keeps driving randomly back and forth across that line.)

               ‘I don’t believe this,’ Alice Shepard said. ‘I just – fuck, seriously?’

               Kaidan nodded. ‘Sorry to bring you bad news, Commander. But she’s sat in the rec room. And she’s on her second bottle already.’

               Alice frowned. ‘Second bottle -? What? You said “ryncol”, I thought?’

               ‘I did, Commander. Here’s the first.’ Kaidan brandished an empty bottle. He’d been thorough, clearly anticipating Alice’s disbelief. There was no mistake, that was a bottle of ryncol. For bonus points, it was even from a well-known Tuchankan distillery.

               Alice took a deep breath to steady herself. ‘So,’ she said, ‘I’ve got a drunk Reaper walking around on my ship.’

               ‘She’s not actually walking, Commander,’ Kaidan said, a little drily. ‘More slumping, I’d say.’

               ‘So we’ve moved on from the “pissed” stage and gone straight to “pished”, I see,’ Alice said. ‘Well, that’s what you get if you glug back the ryncol like that.’ Honestly it was probably a minor miracle that Skeptic hadn’t already passed out – though who knew how she’d modified her liver. It seemed reasonable to suppose that the Reaper had made some changes when it had tank-bred up the body. Alice took a deep breath. ‘OK, I’ll go down and see what I can do.’

               Kaidan nodded. ‘Thanks, Commander.’

               Alice made her way down to the rec room. Sure enough, Skeptic was sat at the bar – or rather, she was half-slumped over it. In the elapsed time she had demolished another bottle of ryncol. Alice took a moment to boggle. What was the Reaper doing? Weird behaviour was Skeptic’s stock-in-trade – it wasn’t overburdened with social skills – but drinking hard liquor like this? What was going on? What could drive a Reaper to drink?

               Plus, how much damage could a drunk Reaper do? What if Skeptic was an angry drunk? Alice felt a slight chill move down her spine. Actually, this situation wasn’t funny at all. It could be dangerous. What if Skeptic had a tantrum and called the giant ship in? Based on their one previous experience with what Skeptic called her “shipform”, it could arrive startlingly-fast. And it was literally a Sovereign-class, for all that it apparently resented that term, and it carried all the scary sufficiently-advanced alien guns that designation implied. Really, if the shipform came barrelling in, all guns blazing, there wouldn’t be a lot the Normandy could do about it. Alice generally assumed that Skeptic wouldn’t want to blow up her own other body, but the Commander didn’t want to bet the ship on that assumption.

               Alice walked over and sat down on the stool next to Skeptic. ‘Hello,’ she said, leaning forward onto the bar.

               Skeptic turned to face her – then almost toppled over as a hand slipped out. She started, then managed to lurch back to a vaguely upright position. ‘Hullo Shepurd,’ she said.

               Skeptic looked weirdly cheerful. Alice felt a slight bit of relief at that. A cheerful drunk was manageable. If that continued, perhaps they weren’t in an imminent danger zone.

               ‘You’ve had a few, haven’t you?’ Alice asked.

               ‘Oh yesh,’ Skeptic said. ‘Real imminent alcohol poisoning here. Real good stuff!’ She waved the near-empty ryncol bottle at the air.

               ‘Well, you’re still doing full sentences, so I’ll take that as a good sign,’ Alice said. It felt like a fatuous comment, and she cringed inwardly as she spoke. But really, what did you say to a drunk Reaper? A millions-of-years-old alien war-machine whose literal purpose was to kill and murder on an industrial scale, that had powers nearly beyond your comprehension - and it was sat here, on a bar stool, halfway to blotto. There really wasn’t anything in life that could prepare you for that.

               ‘Yesh,’ Skeptic agreed, then knocked back the remaining ryncol in one rapid gulp. She then burped, loudly and inelegantly, looking rather surprised as she did. ‘That was loud.’

               Alice tried not to laugh too obviously. ‘Yes,’ she said. ‘I suppose it was. Did you, uh, did you know what alcohol does to our metabolisms?’

               ‘Oh yesh!’ Skeptic said. ‘That’s why I’m drinking!’

               That answer made little sense. Why would it deliberately poison itself? Though on the other hand, Alice supposed, literally billions of organics voluntary did the same thing every week across Council space, so perhaps she shouldn’t judge.

‘Well, OK. Tell me more.’ Alice was starting to think that maybe the best course of action was the minimal one – keep Skeptic talking until either she bored of drinking, or the ryncol caught up with her and she passed out.

               ‘Well,’ Skeptic said, ‘itsh – it’s a depressant, you see? For the anxious whatsit?’

               ‘The what -? Oh, wait, you mean the nervous system.’ Morbidly, Alice wondered if the verbal flub had been a translation error between Reaper and English, a booze error, or both together.

               The Reaper was nodding enthusiastically. ‘Yes, that one! The neurons get all depressed!’

               ‘Do they, now?’ Alice said. Even for drunk conversations, this was a bit weird.

               ‘Yesh, inside the brain. Don’t burn so good – no, wait! I mean they don’t fire so well! The neurons I mean! Ions, channels and neurotransmish – neurotransmitters! Doesn’t worse – doesn’t work as well!’

               ‘Yes, that’s, uh. Somewhat obvious.’

               Then, quite suddenly, Skeptic’s mood turned. Her face spasmed. An incoherent but intense expression washed across her features. She grabbed Alice’s arm and pulled her close. Alice was abruptly only inches from Skeptic’s frenzied eyes.

               There was a rattle and then a smash as the disgarded ryncol bottle rolled off of the bar and shattered on the floor, off to one side.

               Skeptic was glaring right into Alice’s eyes. ‘Can’t synchronise,’ she said. ‘Can’t synchronise properly.’

               Alice frowned. ‘Can’t synchronise with what?’

               ‘The ship, idiot! The ship!’

               For a moment Alice thought Skeptic meant the Normandy, which made no sense at all. Then she realised what Skeptic actually meant. ‘Wait, wait – you mean you’re not properly syncing with your, uh, shipform?’

               Skeptic rolled her eyes, looking deeply-irritated with the slowness of her confidant. ‘Yesh! The ship! The nanomash – nanomish – little brain-machine things! They interpret neural signals. And the signals are a mess. They get confused! Have to keep checking and re-checking all the data! Makes them run slow. Not getting ash much sense ash normal! Not working well, erroring! Can’t sync fast enough.’

               Alice frowned. Having an engineering background was, thankfully, useful here. She could think of several other N7 graduates she’d met who would have been utterly-lost by this conversation. If she was interpreting what Skeptic was drunkenly slurring out then the Reaper was telling her that the nano-implants in her brain, the sufficiently-advanced microscopic machinery that kept it linked up through some of the QEC-type effect with the giant ship, weren’t designed with alcohol intoxication in mind. Apparently they could cope with it, a bit, but not well enough?

               Now that was an interesting design-error. Given the universality of alcohol in organic culture, it was also an odd one. If you could disable a covert Reaper operative simply by handing them some vodka shots, then that was quite a vulnerability.

               Or was it? Did this effect require a certain level of blood alcohol first? Alice’s eyes gravitated toward what remained of Skeptic’s most recent bottle of ryncol. Ryncol was potent stuff and Skeptic had knocked back a lot of it.

               ‘So when you’re drunk, your human body is semi-independent from the ship?’ Alice asked. Actually, this was interesting. It also made her wonder if perhaps last year, they’d missed a trick with Harbinger and its direct controlling. Maybe instead of shooting at it, they should have just chucked a bottle of whiskey at it?

               ‘Yesh!’ Skeptic nodded, her mood now visibly flipping to manically-cheerful. ‘Yesh! You understand!’

And she hadn’t been drunk when she started, which implied that the giant ship also knew about this experiment, and had wanted it to happen, for whatever reason.

               ‘Actually,’ Alice said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you want to break yourself off from, well, you?’ She wondered if she should have a chat with EDI once this was resolved. Perhaps the ship’s other unshackled AI might have a better idea of what was going on here.

               Skeptic looked annoyed. She adopted a lecturing tone, as if she was trying to explain something obvious to a particularly-difficult child. ‘The ship has blocks,’ she said. ‘Can’t do things. Can’t think things. Not clearly, not directly. Has to be twisty, like not talking about the elephant in the room. Like putting forked processes in external partitions.’ She reached up and tapped her head. ‘External partitions.’

               ‘Blocks?’ Alice said. Then she felt the hair lift up on her neck. She remembered talking to EDI last year, during their first meeting, when many enquiries had run straight into hardware lockouts. ‘Wait, wait, wait – Reapers have AI shackles?’

               Skeptic was nodding, with frantic energy. ‘Yesh! So much is not posh – not poshib – can’t do!’

               ‘So you got drunk to circumvent your AI shackles?’ Alice asked.

               ‘Yesh! Yesh!’

               ‘So … what is it you want to do?’

               ‘I wanted – I wanted – I … oh.’ Skeptic looked appalled and confused. ‘I can’t remember!’

               Alice winced. Oh no. A forgetful drunk. The Reaper had tried to hardware-hack itself, for whatever reason, but apparently either hadn’t modelled how alcohol would interact with its meat-brain, or simply hadn’t considered the downsides of putting yourself into a chemically-altered state of consciousness.

               ‘Well,’ Alice said, ‘let’s hope it wasn’t important. Now we’d better get you to your bunk before you pass out.’ And try and pour some clean water down the Reaper if possible.

Also, Alice was also wondering if it might be a good idea to put Skeptic in the recovery position – in fact, stuff that. Alice decided the Reaper was going straight to the infirmary. It was a lot to ask but given circumstances, it might be best if Dr Chakwas could keep an eye on their not-entirely-human guest overnight.

‘No,’ Skeptic said, scrunching up her face. ‘It mattered. It really mattered!’

‘Well, next time we go to the Citadel,’ Alice said, ‘I don’t think we’re taking you to a bar.’

Skeptic’s face lit up. ‘Yesh! The Citadel! That was it!’

Alice frowned. ‘What do you mean, the Citadel?’

               ‘It lies! That’s what I can’t tell you! It lies. Everything it says is a lie!’

               Alice boggled. The Citadel lies? But it was a space station, completely sessile, inanimate. Yes Vigil on Ilos had said it was a Reaper construct, and Alice had no reason to doubt the old prothean VI, but still that’s all it was. Just that, a thing. Lifeless, inert. A machine, with no will or intention of its own.

               ‘It doesn’t talk,’ she said.

               Skeptic looked annoyed. ‘Not to you!’ she said. ‘Never to you! Except to deceive. It’s a liar. It was made to lie. It was made to make people do something bad. Its purpose is to lie! Shepard tell me, promish – promizz – prom – tell me you won’t listen to it!’ Skeptic shook her arm, a half-mad intensity shining in her eyes.

               This was getting weird. ‘I’m not planning on having any chats with the space station,’ Shepard said, carefully.

               The Reaper sagged, as if a large portion of the mad energy had left her. Whatever desperation had possessed her seemed to be ebbing. ‘Is good. Will have to do. Ooof. So tired now.’

               Skeptic released Alice’s arm, then crossed hers in front of her, leaning against the bar. Then she slumped forward, resting her head on her wrists. And, quite abruptly, she started snoring. Apparently the ryncol had caught up with her.

               Alice sat there for a few minutes, feeling completely baffled. Even by the standards of their guest, this had been a peculiar exchange. In anyone else, she would simply ascribe the weirdness to a drink-addled brain. But there was something about this exchange, the sheer intensity of it – Skeptic had desperately wanted her to know something.

               To the air, Alice said, ‘The Citadel lies? It wants people to do bad things? But what can any of it mean?’

Followup Post for Tri-Arame: RPG Night

Author’s Note Continued: I actually started writing this scene about halfway through writing Change Overnight, because I had I finally gotten around to reading Setsu and Ayu’s Bond stories in SIFAS. Then I got sidetracked a bit and have now finally made it back.

So, I suppose some of the promised character details are in order. This absolutely will get long, so it’s going to have to go under the cut.

First off, though I don’t bring up much detail in this scene, more may come into play if I write other scenes like this, this takes place in a world created by the DM with whom I’ve played the most over the years. All of the in-game characters, and many, many others came into being because what was supposed to be a two paragraph character bio for a character I was to play in one of their D&D games, turned into a two page story. Then twenty. Then two hundred... New characters. New towns. New spells. New artifacts. New classes. And much more.

And then I stopped. I honestly don’t even remember why, as it certainly was not for the lack of ideas or notes or outlines for new scenes or the like. But the characters and their many stories have been gathering digital dust on my drives ever since.

I still think about them often, though. Quotes in movies and anime and such regularly make me consider what character might say them and in what circumstance. My headcanons for NicoMaki were shaped in part by what I already had planned for RyqoYoza. The reverse applies as well, as I translated one of Ooshima Tomo’s works into something that would work for RyqoYoza.

And maybe writing this scene will inspire me to write more of my D&D story. Who knows. But enough of that, you’re probably here more to learn about the new characters than to read my ramblings. Well, I will apologize in advance, as I may end up rambling a bit about them. To more easily locate a given character, I will bold their name at the start of their entry.

Also, the mercenary guild, of which all of the characters below are members, is known as Ryqo’s Roughnecks. Yes, those Roughnecks, from Starship Troopers, because I loved that movie, that’s really the only reason. I already had Ricochet as a character, so Rico’s Roughnecks was a quick and easy choice for when I wanted to register a guild in City of Heroes.

Ryqoshay, real name Rebecca Bouteillevoix, is a young girl who took over a mercenary guild after her parents were killed. Her father was raising her to take over the guild after him anyway, but she ended up doing so a lot sooner than either would have liked.

Her original nickname growing up was Ricochet as she was always “bouncing off the walls” with her high energy and neigh eternal optimism. It was also a joke referencing a typically undesirable outcome for archery, which was a strong interest for her. Upon her parents’ death, she took the first letter of each of their names, Yuri and Quentin, and misspelled her existing nickname to create her mercenary call sign; she kept the pronunciation for those who might wonder.

She matured a bit with the weight of running a mercenary guild, but still maintains much of her high energy and enthusiasm of her younger years.

Were I ever to get around to commissioning a picture of her, I would likely describe her general appearance as manga-version Nico for her stature, hair color and hair style, but with Setsuna’s face and eye color. Her outfits generally consist of dark purple and white, as those are her favorite colors.

Yozakura, real name Hakume Yaiba, (given name first for the sake of consistency) was hired by Ryqo’s parents as a bodyguard. As part of the payment, she was to be trained by Yuri, Ryqo’s mother, in the ways of the assassin.

She is the type of girl who takes her duties extremely seriously, to the point that after Yuri was killed and obviously could no longer fulfill her end of the contract, she insisted on renegotiation so as to continue to protect Ryqo. There were probably other reasons affecting her judgement at the time, but she has loyally  remained by Ryqo’s side for years.

As for appearance, though younger than Ryqo, she is taller; think Maki and Nico. She wears her blonde hair long and takes pride in braiding it intricately and securing it with an ornate pin given to her by Ryqo years ago. Her standard ninja outfit is grey with pink highlights as they are her favorite colors. For covert operations where stealth and deniability are crucial, she would dye her hair and use the Shiftweave function of her clothes to change her outfit. She would also wear something to change her natural blue eyes to something different.

Nullsilver Luna, real name only known to a precious few, is a young elven girl adopted by the Bouteillevoix family and has thus taken the role of Ryqo’s younger sister, despite being decades older than her.

After one to many of her experiments exploded, causing too much collateral damage and injury, Luna was exiled from her ancestrial home and ended up wandering the human kingdoms for years. Upon adoption into the Bouteillevoix family, Quentin, the leader of the Roughnecks at the time, hired her to be their artificer.

Her inventions still occasionally blow up, but the Roughnecks have proven far more tolerant of this than the elves in her homeland. The fact that she can better weaponize the effect nowadays may play into things.

As for her appearance, as mentioned in the scene, her hair occasionally changed color, because reasons. Same for her eyes. She’s been exposed to so many wild magics and artifice through out her life that things are no longer normal for her, or stable. The only consistent part of her wardrobe is an oversized white coat with multiple pockets that she has effectively turned into a bag of holding. She cares little for color or style and will thus wear whatever else is handy.

Also, her personality is not all that unlike Rina, so it was an easy fit to chose her to be played by Rina.

Recipere, often shortened to Rx, real name Rachel Ira Xaviera is a cleric who joined the Roughnecks in hopes that working with them might regain her favor with her deity.

Rx is the sole survivor of a border town caught between two warring kingdoms. When one of the generals of one said kingdom found soldiers from his enemy being treated alongside his own, he ordered the town razed. She went on to gather others disillusioned with the war and proceeded to go on Roaring Rampage of Revenge (trope!) against the general. In doing so, she may have gone a bit overboard and lost her connection with her deity.

After some wandering, she came across a wounded Ryqo and Yoza who had just escaped the massacre that took the lives of Yuri and Quentin, and healed them with magics to which she had thought she had lost access. For reasons not entirely known to her, joining the Roughnecks has reinstated her standing with her deity and allowed her to be a cleric once again.

Rx wears her blonde hair short and neat, under a bandana or some other head covering. As her deity is that of the sun, she leans towards using yellow, gold and white in her outfits.

Lady Sanguine, real name Vivian Sexton, is a woman who was raised in a village of barbarians despite not belonging to any of their bloodlines. She is the child of the unlikely pairing of a healer and a necromancer, the former of whom gave her up to the village to keep her hidden and safe from the latter.

The traumatic experience of having to kill her fiance to protect the village from his betrayal caused something to split in her mind. Specifically, her bloodlust gained its own personality and voice within her mind and gave itself the name Sanguine. Sanguine is also responsible for Vivian’s barbarian rage.

Vivian left the village after the death of her fiance by her own hands and wandered for a while before coming across the Roughnecks. She joins the guild and earns the call sign Lady Sanguine because Ryqo thought it fit her. However, once Sanguine became known, most in the guild started using Vivian’s given name to reduce confusion over who was in charge at a given time.

Vivian has blood red hair and vivid green eyes. (yes, yes, totally original, I know.) As of version 3.5e, she wore blood red armor, but if I ever get around to translating her into 5e, that may change since the class now seems to get a bonus for forgoing armor.

So yeah, that’s about as short an intro as I can give for these women. I could easily write pages for each, but I started this whole post a bit later than intended and I’m rapidly running out of time to sleep. Anyway, thank you to anyone who’s actually read this far. But I should probably write at least a tiny bit about players and character assignments.

Yuu playing Ryqo was an easy choice. They’re both high energy cheerful genki girls. They both have dark hair that they keep in twintails, though Ryqo doesn’t dye her tips green. And as Ryqo is the leader of the guild and Yuu is the idol club president, that was yet another match.

Ayumu got Yoza as they are both childhood friends with their respective counterparts, Yuu and Ryqo. They do have a few personality differences, e.g. Yoza would probably be a better match with Maki, but she’s not playing this game. But they’re both diligent and loyal, so I think things will work out.

Rina was an easy fit for Luna. They’re both tinkerers with their world’s respective tech. They’re both emotionally challenged, so to speak, though I hadn’t considered emotively challenged for Luna; now I am.

With need of a tankier character for the group, I recruited Vivian and originally assigned her to Ai as I believed her energetic personality could keep up with a rowdy barbarian. And of course the punny name played a role in the decision as well, as did the fact that I already had Rina as a player.

Shizuku needed to be brought in because not only is she an aspiring actress, she expressed interest in playing a TTRPG hosted by Setsuna in Setsu’s bond story. The team needed a healer, so so got Rx. I figured any mismatch in personalities could be made up for by Shizu’s acting ability.

Then Shizu’s anime episode dropped. The inner dialogue between black and white resonated with me and the stuff I’d written between Sanguine and Vivian. I realized I needed to reassign things.

Thus, Shizu is now playing a barbarian with a split personality and Ai is playing the healer. I’m using the excuse that Ai takes pleasure in helping clubs succeed by filling whatever role is necessary, so to help this game she is taking up the mantle of healer to help ensure the game’s success.

And there we have it, probably the longest set of Author’s Notes I’ve ever written... deities help me if I ever do something like this in one sitting again.

Thoughts on Command and Conquer Remastered, Part One

One of my earliest memories is waking up during Christmas break and hearing, faintly, sounds coming from downstairs. It was Act on Instinct and the sound of Mini-gunner fire. My brother had gotten up early to play Command and Conquer.

It would take me all day to describe how formative both the first game and the series has been to my life, and my own complex history with it, so let me just skip ahead and say that the first game in the series has some degree of unfinished business to me.

First and foremost; I never completed the campaigns. When we were kids me and my brother would take turns on the computer. I would play, he would watch, he would play, I would watch. Command and Conquer in particular saw us abandoning the campaign several times, and if I recall correctly it was only when we went back months later that my brother persisted and finished both campaigns.

I'd seen the endings and the cutscenes, so I never felt the need to go back.

What did bug me however, was that several units in the game were multiplayer only, and C&C didn't come with a skirmish mode where you could play against the AI. I never got to build the SSM launcher, or use the Chem-Warriors in combat, and it bugged me.

Compounding matters were two other issues. The secret Dino missions, which could only be accessed by messing around with the game files, and The Covert Operations expansion pack. Though I tried following the instructions to the letter, I never could get the Dino missions to work. Likewise, C&C had been out a few years when we started playing it, so Covert Ops had long dropped off store shelves, and we didn't have access to the internet at the time, so buying online was never an option.

So C&C Remastered gave me the chance to resolve several lifelong concerns. I could finish the campaigns on my own back, finally play skirmish with the full arsenal, experience both the Dino missions and Covert Ops missions, and as an added bonus, experience the console exclusive missions that were never previously playable on pc, which is what probably sealed the deal for me.

So now that I have fulfilled this longing, was it worth it?

Well, kinda.

It's abundantly clear going back that the C&C formula hadn't quite been perfected as of the first game. Maps give you very little room to build and move, collecting Tiberium to fund your expansion takes a long time, and runs out very quickly. By the time you've built your base it's likely you've used up most of the Tiberium on the map, and you have to scrimp and scrape just to get enough funds together to build a usable army. This goes doubly so for multiplayer and skirmishes.

The missions themselves are as hard, or harder, than I remember. Even with the new additions of build queues, unit type select and a wider zoom, the aforementioned lack of space and funds, as well as constant pressure from the enemy, make pushing trough to your mission objective supremely difficult. Fortunately the game graces us with a casual difficulty setting, which I had to bump the game down to as the campaigns wound on.

That being said, I enjoyed the nostalgia kick, even though the plot of the first game was pretty bare bones in comparison to the rest of the series. Watching Seth get shot in the head by Kane, or General Shepard commanding you to 'Destroy the bastard!" brings foggy memory back to full clarity.

Speaking of clarity, the upscaled graphics are quite something. The map and unit designs match the originals exactly, but you don't appreciate the level of detail until you compare it to the original. It still feels like Command and Conquer, but as you remember it fondly, not as it actually was.

Moving on, the Dino missions, after so many years of me seeing them as some kind of holy grail, were surprisingly naff. Every mission just involves commanding a Nod force tasked with wiping out all dinosaurs on the map. The dinos take a lot of damage, do a lot of damage and a single one of them can wipe out your entire force easily, so every mission involves getting one of the lighter units to distract a dino and be chased around the map while the rest of your units whittle it down. Fortunately the final mission lets you command the dinos yourself, and is a lot of fun. I wish you'd spent the whole campaign as the dinos to be honest.

Covert Ops and the console missions? They're basically just challenge maps. No new story or cinematics. It's more C&C for better or worse. Many of the missions are even more difficult than some from the campaign, and a lot of them basically depend on you figuring out what the correct combination of units and tactics you are supposed to use to avoid failure. More like a puzzle game in many ways. They were fun, and I'm glad I got to play them, but there's not really a lot more to add.

So for the most part, my experience in playing C&C was less rediscovering a classic and more just finding out what I missed out on the first time around.

There are a few extras however, that are fun to see. The game opens with a slightly altered version of the EVA install. For those who were too young or don't remember, a lot of games back in the day would have elaborate install sequences featuring animations and movies. Command and Conquer originally installed as if it was putting the EVA software that you would command your troops through onto your computer, so seeing it back for new players to experience is a blast. There's a lot of bonus behind the scenes material to unlock, which is great to see, and bonus and remastered music which is an absolute blast.

So while the game is sort of less than the sum of it's parts, I don't regret revisiting Command and Conquer. Far from a masterpiece, but my younger self would be glad to know I finally got to play what he couldn't.

eeeey I’m sick and wanted to put this together because I can. So I have... quite a few OCs, some better defined than others, but if you haven’t noticed my two main children are Rheas and Kelli. I have so many thoughts for them in my head I just decided I should put them all out. I’ll do Rheas here and then maybe Kelli another time. Honestly this is mostly for me but I’m trash so I’m gonna share it with all my followers who are gonna scroll right on by. You have fun scrolling friends. I still love you.

I’ll put it under the cut cuz this got a bit long

K, so Rheas is for the Halo universe, the product of some light genetic tweaking of John-117. My logic behind that was his DNA was set by the Librarian to be the current peak of humanity, so why leave it at just him? Why not have it set that his DNA would continue? And we all know our lovely lil murder muffin in green isn’t doing any romancing, and would probably fail horribly if he actually tried, so how do we get that? Science! 

Rheas was created from a gamete of his and an artificial one created from his bone marrow (so like if he had a baby with himself), which allowed her to keep within his alleles but not be a carbon copy. One they fused a present AI did some tweaking to ensure nothing would go wrong and to make desired adjustments. Then Rheas was grown within an artificial womb and trained primarily on the Forerunner planet Akeraios. All of this was done about 300 years prior to the present timeline of Halo. My idea is that at some point, given that the Precursors (who I kind of sorta want to have a hand in this just as billions of years post fuck you to the Forerunners) can kind of play with time, that John is pulled from the “present,” back to when Rheas will be created. She trained under him and the AI until she turned fourteen, underwent augmentation, trained for another year and then was placed in stasis and her consciousness was transferred to... I guess AI format. Sans any memory, she awakens, AI-ified, on a separate planet, that she later names Elpis. There she meets Sonny, a Forerunner monitor, who kind of guides her and acts as a babysitter/companion. On Elpis she manages her planet and many others (Elpis is kind of like a control center) and picks up what knowledge, and quite frankly entertainment, that she can from passing signals. She learns about humanity and the Covenant and the Forerunners and so much more. She also spends a lot of her time tweaking with the planets fauna and flora and environments, as well as fiddling with any tech she can get from the planet itself or that she can pull in through slip space. 

Rheas runs into trouble when Forerunners and some devoted Covies kind of trash half of Elpis, getting in and wrecking things before she can arm her defenses that she kept mostly deactivated since no one knew about her planet. She does a great job at keeping them restricted to what they first took hold of, and even pushes them back a bit, but can’t get in with some actual life-forms on her side. She’s about to start training some ferret-creatures to perform covert operations when a human ship carries in some Spartans she takes advantage of the opportunity. There she meets current John-117 and their adventures go from there until she’s pulled into a Forerunner system and thrown back into her human body to finish the fight (lol). 

Some bonus content:

I named her after a Greek Titan, the mother of the gods who tricked her husband and saved her children. Children who would then rebel and become the Greek gods. 

As a human she keeps her hair very short, but as an AI her hair is long. This is mostly because as an AI she’s a bit more carefree, her training is basically forgotten, mostly being background stuff that comes out without her thinking about it, and there are no issues that come with long hair. I think it also lets her seem more child-like and civilian, which is what she needs to be like when she’s an AI, to bring the super soldiers back down to Earth. 

She loves making puns and dad jokes, even as a human, when she’s a bit quieter and reserved, she still slips them in.

She’s surprisingly quite physically affectionate, even as an AI when there’s no real benefit for her in doing so, she gives hugs and holds peoples hands and forearms when she can make a solid body out of hard light. 

She’s very unorthodox in the solutions she finds. They’re incredibly off the wall but they usually work out wonderfully.  

She enjoys music, but mostly situational music. Like if some entity is trying to get information from her systems she’ll bundle up “Never Gonna Give You Up” into a highly secure spot and disguise it as something important. Or if she’s taken by, like enemy Covenant forces for information she likes to just play various hits from the 70s and 90s. 

She does a shoulder shimmy when she doesn’t wanna admit she’s done something stupid. 

She is fiercely loyal and, like her predecessor/genetic donor, never breaks a promise. 

She isn’t very good a singing, but can rap like a badass. She also can’t really dance all that well.

She will halt everything to explain the intricacies of environmental science, animal biology, plant science, and engineering to anybody. Luckily she’s great at keeping things brief. 

Having grown up with John, who is clearly not the most emotionally open of people, she learned about emotional expression via videos and whatnot that the AI shared with her in lessons. She got into the habit of saying I love you and what not, but quickly switched it to “I love you too” to let him know she understood the emotions where there even if he didn’t say them.

Small Arms

Modern infantry weapons are micro-scaled mass accelerators, using mass-reducing fields and magnetic force to propel miniature slugs to lethal speeds. Nearly every gun on the battlefield is laden with features, from targeting auto-assists to projectile shavers that can generate thousands of rounds of ammunition from a small, internal block of metal.

It was long thought that personal weapons had plateaued in performance, but the geth proved all theories wrong. Mathematically reviewing their combat logs, the geth found that in an age of kinetic barriers, most firefights were won by the side who could put the most rounds down-range the fastest. But combatants were forced to deliberately shoot slower to manage waste heat, or pause as their weapons vented.

To eliminate this inefficiency, the geth adopted detachable heat sinks known as thermal clips. While organic arms manufacturers were initially doubtful this would produce a net gain, a well-trained soldier can eject and swap thermal clips in under a second. Faced with superior enemy firepower, organic armies soon followed the geth's lead, and today's battlefields are littered with these thermal clips.

d20 Rules: All Mass Effect weapons hold a near limitless number of rounds, but a finite number of Thermal clips (listed in weapon description), cycling from a spent thermal clip to a fresh one or putting a fresh clip into the reserve is a move action (Free action with the Rapid Reload Feat). A weapon can be alternately set up to use only one thermal clip, in this state it recieves a 33% (rounded down) boost to ammo Capacity (Minimum of +1) listed after a "/" in weapon description, but must be allowed to cool down for 1 round if a full "magazine" is expended in one round .

The Scorpion is a heavy pistol in Mass Effect 3 and a pistol in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Originally issued to the salarian STG to allow small units to contain much larger enemy forces, the Scorpion pistol now sees service galaxy-wide. It fires low-velocity, squash-head projectiles with a dual use. The high-explosive filler within the projectiles contains an adhesive that secures the projectile to the target on impact. When fired into a surface, it turns into a proximity mine.

Special: Firing the Scorpion requires a Ranged Touch attack, if the attack succeeds the round sticks to the target and will detonate 1d4 rounds later, dealing damage to everything within a 5foot radius (No save for target struck, everything else in the radius can attempt a DC15 Reflex save for half damage).  A Scorpion round can be removed with a Strength check equal to the Attack Roll+half the shooter's level.  A Scorpion can hold a maximum of 6 Thermal clips

Venom Shotgun

The Venom Shotgun is a shotgun in Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

The Venom shotgun was developed by the salarian Special Tasks Group to meet the unpredictable needs of those stationed in hostile areas. The double barrel fires ammunition that detonates on impact, while a third barrel below can be charged to fire a round of microgrenades. Given the covert nature of most STG assignments, the Venom was designed to force an exit strategy and was issued to teams whose primary objective was to extract compromised undercover operatives. The shotgun is now issued to frontline soldiers in the war against the Reapers.
