How You Should Dispose of Unused or Expired Medications
Flushing or throwing away leftover drugs can contaminate waterways, threatening people and wildlife. Here are some safer solutions.
— By Priyanka Runwal | Published July 22, 2022 | Sunday August 6, 2023
If you have a stash of unwanted, unused, or expired medicines in a cabinet or drawer somewhere in your home and you don’t know the best way to get rid of them, you’re not alone.
A 2021 survey conducted on behalf of Covanta, a New Jersey-based waste management company, found that 53 percent of the 2,000 Americans polled had no idea what to do with their old medications. Pill hoarding is a common outcome, and many people eventually toss these drugs into household trash or flush them down the toilet or sink—none of which may be a good idea.
Unused or expired medicines lying around at home can get into the wrong hands, leading to accidental poisoning or drug overdose. One study found that between 2000 and 2015, U.S. Poison Control Centers received roughly 32 calls a day about children accidently ingesting opioids that had either been stored or disposed of incorrectly.
When drugs are flushed or sent to landfill, the pharmaceuticals can contaminate our groundwater, lakes, rivers, and streams, threatening human and aquatic life, although our urine and feces that contain remnants of consumed medication are bigger sources of pollution. Wastewater treatment plants aren’t designed to remove these pharmaceuticals, Tim Carroll, a spokesperson for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, says in an email. “EPA’s first message to everyone is do NOT put leftover, unused drugs down the drain.”
So how does one dispose of unneeded over-the-counter and prescription medications accumulating in our homes? There are a few options.
Drug Take-back Programs
In an effort to find a solution to drugs languishing in medicine cabinets or lurking in waterways, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration launched its first National Take-Back Day in September 2010. More than 4,000 sites across 50 states collected nearly 250,000 pounds of pharmaceuticals that people returned. Since then, DEA has hosted this single-day event biannually; in April this year, more than 5,000 sites collected about 721,000 pounds of pharmaceuticals.
People can also use mail-back envelopes or drop off their unwanted medications year-round at DEA-registered collection kiosks in police stations, pharmacies, community health centers, and hospitals. These returned drugs are then sent to medical waste incinerators.
Drug Enforcement Administration agents and Soldiers from the New Jersey National Guard's Counter Drug Task Force dumped prescription drugs to be incinerated at the Covanta Essex Resource Recovery Facility during Operation Take Back New Jersey in Newark, N.J., Oct. 31, 2017. In 2021 Stericycle, the largest medical waste incinerator company in the U.S., burned 40 million pounds of unused and expired pharmaceuticals, says Jim Anderson, the company’s vice president for product management and innovation. Incineration produces an inert ash that’s sent to landfills. However, one downside of this disposal method is that transporting and burning such waste and its packaging can release greenhouse gas emissions that can be potentially greater than those generated if the drugs were dumped in landfill, according to one study estimate.
But take-back programs are preferred as they reduce the risk of drug misuse and the incineration “effectively eliminates the entrance of these pharmaceuticals into our nation’s waters,” Carroll says.
However, Steve Skerlos, a mechanical, civil, and environmental engineer at the University of Michigan argues that take-back programs could still result in medicines piling up in homes—a problem such programs were designed to address in the first place. “The question is, if I have extra, unused medication, am I going to leave my house in the next day, or week, even a month, to return that,” he says, especially in rural settings where take-back sites may not be as easily accessible. “A reasonable person may consider landfill to get it out of the house fast.”
In such cases, the DEA suggests mixing medicinal tablets and capsules with undesirable substances like coffee grounds or kitty litter and tossing the mixture into the trash inside a sealed bag or container. (Don’t crush the drugs though.)
And while the EPA advises against flushing pharmaceuticals down the drain, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains a list of limited medications that have the potential to be misused or result in death if taken inappropriately and so can be flushed when safer disposal alternatives are lacking.
Pharmacies also sell drug destroyers such as DisposeRx that can work with pills, tablets, capsules, liquids, and powders. “It’s about the size of a packet of sugar,” says Thomas Menighan, former CEO of the American Pharmacists Association. “You open it, put it in a bottle of unused opioids, or any medicine, for example, you pour a little water in and shake it up, it turns into a white slurry,” which can then be tossed into the trash.
But it’s unclear if these products permanently bind or inactivate the medicinal compounds so that they don’t end up in the landfill liquid, which is released into wastewater treatment plants, and can eventually contaminate our waterways.
Recycling Pharmaceuticals
Perhaps surprisingly, not all unused medications need to be thrown away.
Every year five billion dollars’ worth of unexpired medicine ends up being discarded in the U.S. That could happen because a patient dies, their condition improves and they no longer need their prescribed medication, there’s a dose change, or they experience side effects and are put on new drugs. In such cases these unexpired medications—worth an estimated $700 million—can be recycled.
“We’re wasting a lot of medication which is already paid for,” says Anandi Law, a patient engagement specialist at the Western University of Health Sciences in California. “We could have somebody else who needs it have it.”
Millions of U.S. adults skip or delay getting their prescriptions filled due to high costs. Hence, at least 40 states have passed legislation to establish medication repository programs that allow pharmacies, drug manufactures, medical and long-term care facilities, and sometimes individuals to donate their unused drugs in original sealed containers or tamper-evident packaging.
A licensed pharmacist then inspects the donated medication to check the expiry date and look for signs of tampering, misbranding, or any indication that the drug could be compromised. Once approved, the drugs can be dispensed to uninsured or underinsured individuals via state-approved pharmacies, hospitals, charitable clinics, or community health centers.
Since its inception in 2007, Iowa’s drug donation program, SafeNetRx, has served more than 117,000 patients and redistributed nearly $54-million worth of medication and supplies. Georgia’s program formally launched in 2018, and it has already filled prescriptions worth over $50 million.
“Even though over 40 states have these drug donation laws, a lot of people don’t know that they exist,” says Kiah Williams, co-founder of SIRUM, a nonprofit organization that works with pharmacies and health facilities across the country to assist with drug donation.
Donating unused medications or using take-back programs are voluntary for households, but experts hope more people will use these options instead of disposing of their leftover drugs in the trash or down the drain, which tends to be more convenient.
“All of these efforts are still relatively new,” Carroll says. “We expect we have a long way to go until households change their habits.”

Have you ever been the target of an online attack? Matt Genirs
This was very much a rhetorical question. I am confident the answer for every single person reading this is yes. We have all been the target of a potential cyber threat by virtue of using email, visiting certain websites, clicking on bad ads, andmuch more. We are constantly under this threat and potential danger, and all the companies we know and love (or hate) today are absolutely no different. There is nothing we or every company in the world can do to prevent it. With all of the technological developments and progress going on around us, don’t think for a second that hackers aren’t doing everything they can to keep up.
The key to this harsh reality is the word prevent. While companies cannot prevent these attacks, they can certainly prepare for them and defend against them. But the only way they can accomplish this is by paying for it. According to Gartner, cybersecurity spending is forecasted to grow by about 9% a year through 2024, which would have it closing in on the 200 billion dollar industry mark. Even though many companies have already heavily invested into their cybersecurity defenses, threats are always evolving. This is especially dangerous for companies that are just recently becoming increasingly more digital, meaning they need to invest in both the tech they want to improve their business and the security measures they will need to protect it. This stems from adopting technological strategies and innovations like increasing their reliance on cloud networks, creating and installing new Internet of Things products, and new applications and uses of artificial intelligence. But yet not all companies understand how important this security aspect is, especially when adopting new tech. In a survey of cybersecurity professionals by Isaca, only 58% of respondents anticipated an increase in their organizations cybersecurity budget in the next 12 months. While this number may be skewed down due to financial difficulties that COVID has created, it is still disheartening that such a large percentage don’t see the need to continue to innovate their cybersecurity defenses. I believe companies have to recognize how seriously they must take their security, as if they don’t there could be massive consequences. For example, just a mere two weeks ago, a woman in Germany died because of a cybersecurity hack at a hospital. As she was rushed into the hospital for emergency treatment, she was turned away and directed to another hospital 20 miles away because all of their technology was compromised and unusable. She died as a result. While this is a rare occurrence, it should warn companies of the significance of protecting their networks.
With the rise of COVID, the investments and developments of many companies’ cloud networks have been accelerated, especially as more employees need easy access to these corporate networks from home. Gartner reports that spending on these cloud based network systems is forecasted to increase by 30% a year. And as more companies expand their cloud based networks, the more security they will need. Yet it can be tempting for companies to cut corners as the cloud can be difficult to defend and secure due to the different configurations and programs that cloud based service companies use. As a result, companies need to approach multiple different cybersecurity vendors that specialize in different tasks and protecting different assets and entry points, which can quickly add up. Moreover these companies’ movement to and expansion of cloud based networks means they need to start thinking about how their security needs are changing and keep up with adding these needed measures. One popular security strategy many are starting to employ is the idea of the zero-trust principle. This means that every user and device on a certain network must be rigorously authenticated every time they log on. For example, many companies have begun to use is adaptive multifactor authentication to ensure that only authorized users enter the network. Even Boston College has adopted this system; we are required to pass two forms of authentication before doing important and sensitive things like viewing our tuition bill.
Companies are also beginning to focus on their security measures around their developing AI and IoT products. The IoT products present a particular risk as each subsequent link to the network, regardless of what the technology may be or how it is used, can represent an access point for hackers to gain access to the companies’ entire network as a whole. And in many cases, companies are only just getting started with their entrance into the IoT industry. Moreover, many of these companies have long term goals of creating massive IoT systems that largely run on AI. For example, Covanta, a New Jersey based company that has more than 40 industrial plants worldwide which burn trash and convert it into electricity, have long term dreams of operating entirely digitally. They want to develop a stable of network connectable devices that can autonomously operate and monitor each plant in addition to collecting and analyzing the data from their operations of each one. This too would require an expansive cloud based network that would again require a number of different security vendors to protect each aspect.
What do I think of all of this? To say the least, I am very, very scared. I think companies need to understand that security is just as, if not more important than, the networks they build and data they collect. In my opinion, this is especially true for IoT products. As I outlined earlier, most of these IoT products are brand new forms of technology, many of which will not have sufficient security systems. As a result, they could end up being extremely easy for hackers to break into, giving them access to powerful companies’ networks and data and putting all of our info that we provide them at risk for theft. But as IoT develops, there can be even more direct dangers as these IoT products become more significant and applicable to the daily consumers’ lives. Thinking back to the hospital example I mentioned earlier, what if the creation of hospital equipment IoT products could be hacked into? No doubt this would put tons of people’s lives in severe danger without control over their equipment needed for treatment or surgery. Taking this another step, what about when autonomous cars are mainstream on the road? These will certainly be IoT products, and if hacked could see owners lose entire control of their cars and put their lives at the mercy of those who hacked into them. While these may be far reaching and seem impossible now, we must remember the speed at which these technologies are developing. I would much rather companies spend the extra money now to ensure the new tech they employ is safely and securely protected, rather than wait until something catastrophic happens to take action.

Box office: Movie theater operators Cinemark (NYSE:CNK), AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC), Reading International (NASDAQ:RDI) and Marcus Corporation (NYSE:MCS) are looking for a big office weekend, with strong forecasts in for Disney’s (DIS) Ralph Breaks the Internet ($49M), MGM’s Creed 2 ($36M), Warner Bros. (NYSE:T) film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($30M) and Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch ($27M). The YTD U.S. box office is up 10.2% to $10.43B through November 19.
Barron’s mentions: The plunge in Target’s (NYSE:TGT) share price makes it a bargain, reasons Jack Hough. Is a 5.1% increase in same-store sales and 49% pop in e-commerce sales all that bad? It’s seen as more than a little interesting that Berkshire Hathaway ([[BRK.A)]], BRK.B) is plowing money into big banks, investing more than $4B in JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) in Q3 and $6B in Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). Buffett also holds stakes in Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), PNC Financial (NYSE:PNC), and Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK). Andrew Bary notes that even though the yield curve has been narrowing, banks have been reporting wider net interest margins. Tae Kim looks at the FAANG stocks one by one. Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) is called the most attractive, while too many clouds are seen with Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX).

Philly's switch to burning half its recyclables gets some national coverage
The conscientious citizens of Philadelphia continue to put their pizza boxes, plastic bottles, yoghurt containers and other items into recycling bins.
But in the past three months, half of these recyclables have been loaded on to trucks, taken to a hulking incineration facility and burned, according to the city’s government.
It’s a situation being replicated across the US as cities struggle to adapt to a recent ban by China on the import of items intended for reuse.
The loss of this overseas dumping ground means that plastics, paper and glass set aside for recycling by Americans is being stuffed into domestic landfills or is simply burned in vast volumes. This new reality risks an increase of plumes of toxic pollution that threaten the largely black and Latino communities who live near heavy industry and dumping sites in the US.
About 200 tons of recycling material is sent to the huge Covanta incinerator in Chester City, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, every day since China’s import ban came into practice last year, the company says.
Zulene Mayfield stands in front of her old house in Chester, Pennsylvania. Mayfield moved to Delaware because she says she couldn’t live in her home anymore despite still owning it Photograph: Hannah Yoon/The Guardian
“People want to do the right thing by recycling but they have no idea where it goes and who it impacts,” said Zulene Mayfield, who was born and raised in Chester and now spearheads a community group against the incinerator, called Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living.
“People in Chester feel hopeless – all they want is for their kids to get out, escape. Why should we be expendable? Why should this place have to be burdened by people’s trash and shit?”
Some experts worry that burning plastic recycling will create a new fog of dioxins that will worsen an already alarming health situation in Chester. Nearly four in 10 children in the city have asthma, while the rate of ovarian cancer is 64% higher than the rest of Pennsylvania and lung cancer rates are 24% higher, according to state health statistics.
The dilemma with what to do with items earmarked for recycling is playing out across the US. The country generates more than 250m tons of waste a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with about a third of this recycled and composted.
Until recently, China had been taking about 40% of US paper, plastics and other recyclables but this trans-Pacific waste route has now ground to a halt. In July 2017, China told the World Trade Organization it no longer wanted to be the end point for yang laji, or foreign garbage, with the country keen to grapple with its own mountains of waste.

Since January 2018, China hasn’t accepted two dozen different recycling materials, such as plastic and mixed paper, unless they meet strict rules around contamination. The imported recycling has to be clean and unmixed – a standard too hard to meet for most American cities.
It is “virtually impossible to meet the stringent contamination standards established in China”, said a spokeswoman for the city of Philadelphia, who added that the cost of recycling has become a “major impact on the city’s budget”, at around $78 a ton. Half of the city’s recycling is now going to the Covanta plant, the spokeswoman said.
There isn’t much of a domestic market for US recyclables – materials such as steel or high-density plastics can be sold on but much of the rest holds little more value than rubbish – meaning that local authorities are hurling it into landfills or burning it in huge incinerators like the one in Chester, which already torches around 3,510 tons of trash, the weight equivalent of more than 17 blue whales, every day.
“This is a real moment of reckoning for the US because of a lot of these incinerators are aging, on their last legs, without the latest pollution controls,” said Claire Arkin, campaign associate at Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives. “You may think burning plastic means ‘poof, it’s gone’ but it puts some very nasty pollution into the air for communities that are already dealing with high rates of asthma and cancers.”

Hugging the western bank of the Delaware River, which separates Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Chester City was once a humming industrial outpost, hosting Ford and General Motors plants. Since the war, however, Chester has been hollowed out, with an exodus of jobs ushering in an era where a third of people live in poverty.
The industry that remains emits a cocktail of soot and chemicals upon a population of 34,000 residents, 70% of them black. There’s a waste water treatment plant, a nearby Kimberly-Clark paper mill and a medical waste facility. And then there’s Covanta’s incinerator, one of the largest of its kind in the US.
Just a tiny fraction of the trash burned at the plant is from Chester – the rest is funneled in via truck and train from as far as New York City and North Carolina. The burning of trash releases a host of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides and particulate matter, which are tiny fragments of debris that, once inhaled, cause an array of health problems.

It’s difficult to single out the exact cause of any cancer but a host of studies have identified possible links between air pollution and ovarian and breast cancers, which are unusually prevalent in Chester. A 1995 report by the EPA found that air pollution from local industry provides a “large component of the cancer and non-cancer risk to the citizens of Chester”.
“There are higher than normal rates of heart disease, stroke and asthma in Chester, which are all endpoints for poor air,” said Dr Marilyn Howarth, a public health expert at the University of Pennsylvania who has advised Chester activists for the past six years.
Howarth said residents now risk a worsened exposure to pollution due to increased truck traffic rumbling through their streets, bringing recycling to the plant. Once burned, plastics give off volatile organics, some of them carcinogenic.
“It is difficult to link any single case of cancer, heart disease or asthma directly to a particular source. However, the emissions from Covanta contain known carcinogens so they absolutely increase the risk of cancer to area residents.”

Covanta say that pollution controls, such as scrubbers in smokestacks, will negate toxins emitted by recyclables. After passing through the emissions control system, the plant’s eventual output is comfortably below limits set by state and federal regulators, the company says, with emissions of dioxins far better than the expected standard.
The company also argues that incineration is a better option than simply heaping plastic and cardboard in landfills.
“In terms of greenhouse gases, it’s better sending recyclables to an energy recovery facility because of the methane that comes from a landfill,” said Paul Gilman, Covanta’s chief sustainability officer. “Fingers crossed Philadelphia can get their recycling program going again because these facilities aren’t designed for recyclables, they are designed for solid waste.”
A garbage truck drives through a residential neighborhood to get to the Covanta incinerator in Chester, Pennsylvania. Photograph: Hannah Yoon/The Guardian
Covanta and its critics agree that the whole recycling system in the US will need to be overhauled to avoid further environmental damage. Just 9% of plastic is recycled in the US, with campaigns to push up recycling rates obscuring broader concerns about the environmental impact of mass consumption, whether derived from recycled materials or not.
“The unfortunate thing in the United States is that when people recycle they think it’s taken care of, when it was largely taken care of by China,” said Gilman. “When that stopped, it became clear we just aren’t able to deal with it.”

Stocks To Watch: Eyes On Cyber Monday, Argentina And Mars
Welcome to Seeking Alpha’s Stocks to Watch – a preview of key events scheduled for the next week. Follow this account and turn the e-mail alert on to receive this article in your inbox every Saturday morning.
Investors will be looking for some soothing signs of global cooperation next week amid the continuing erosion of equity markets. In Europe, U.K. and European Union leaders are scheduled to meet for more Brexit talks at a special summit that begins in Brussels on November 25. Meanwhile, the highly-anticipated G-20 meeting in Buenos Aires begins on November 30, headlined by the planned meeting between President Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jingping. As for the sharp drop in crude oil prices, while there’s some debate on if global growth concerns are a bigger factor than Saudi Arabia production levels, you can’t overlook the wildcard of having Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Trump all in Argentina at the end of the week.
Notable earnings reports: Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM), Momo (NASDAQ:MOMO) and GameStop (NYSE:GME) on November 27; Box (NYSE:BOX), J.M. Smucker (NYSE:SJM) and Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS) on November 28; Splunk (NASDAQ:SPLK), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR), Workday (NYSE:WDAY) and Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW) on November 29. See Seeking Alpha’s Earnings Calendar for the complete list of earnings reporters.
IPOs expected to price: No new action anticipated.
IPO lockup expirations: Hancock Jaffe Laboratories (NASDAQ:HJLI) on November 27 and Ambow Education (NYSEMKT:AMBO) on November 28.
Analyst quiet period expirations: Axonics Modulation Technologies (NASDAQ:AXNX), Twist Bioscience (NASDAQ:TWST) and Orchard Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ORTX) on November 26.
Projected dividend changes: Disney (NYSE:DIS) to $0.90 from $0.84, McCormick (NYSE:MKC) to $0.56 from $0.52, Raymond James (NYSE:RJF) to $0.35 from $0.30, Cantel Medical (NYSE:CMD) to $0.10 from $0.085, J&J Snack Foods (NASDAQ:JJSF) to $0.48 from $0.45, La-Z-Boy (NYSE:LZB) to $0.13 from $0.12, Neenah (NYSE:NP) to $0.45 from $0.41.
Cyber Monday: Updates on Cyber Monday sales could come in during the week from Wayfair (NYSE:W), Shopify (NYSE:SHOP), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY). Last year, the companies all posted dazzling growth, although their reports on activity ranged from very detailed (Wayfair) to somewhat vague (Amazon). The catch-all investment for online shopping is the Amplify Online Retail ETF (NASDAQ:IBUY), which has seen some volatility this year. IBUY closed up 0.9% on Friday after Black Friday online sales reports came in strong, but trades 23% below its 52-week high.
Mars: NASA’s planned landing of the Insight spacecraft is a huge moment for Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT). The lander built by Lockheed is due to touch down in the Elysium Planitia region of Mars at around 3:00 p.m. ET on November 26. A Lockheed mission operations team based out of Denver will support science collection through the life of the mission, estimated to last approximately two Earth years or one Martian year. Investors are looking for a little Mars magic, with shares of Lockheed Martin down 8.0% YTD.
Food for thought: Campbell Soup (NYSE:CPB) holds its shareholder meeting on November 29 amid a raging proxy battle with Third Point. Shares of Campbell Soup are up 3.5% since the company reported better-than-anticipated Q3 results, but the food company still has some work to do. Wells Fargo points to the new CEO selection, Lance-Snyder integration and soup turnaround as some big hurdles that need to be cleared. It’s hard to say if any M&A news will come out of the Campbell meeting, but food names such as J.M. Smucker (SJM), Farmer Bros. (NASDAQ:FARM), General Mills (NYSE:GIS), Flower Foods (NYSE:FLO), Kellogg (NYSE:K) and Hostess Brands (NASDAQ:TWNK) have been perky off of Campbell developments.
Los Angeles Auto Show: The L.A. Auto Show running from November 30 to December 9 will have a heavy focus on Automobility, including speakers on the topic from Ford (NYSE:F), General Motors (NYSE:GM), Magna International (NYSE:MGA), Lucid Motors, Honda (NYSE:HMC) and even an Amazon Alex exec. Visa (NYSE:V) will also be represented on an Automobility panel. Notable models debuting at the show include the 2020 Toyota (NYSE:TM) Corolla hybrid, BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY) X/5/X7 Sport Activity and 2020 Kia (OTCPK:HYMLF) Soul Crossover – as well as surprise models from Porsche (OTCPK:POAHY) and Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY).
Carvana in focus: Carvana (NYSE:CVNA) is scheduled to host its analyst day event on November 29. Wolfe Research has tipped that the event could be a catalyst if the company clears up the visibility on its long-term margin profile.
New Jersey: Keep an eye on the Garden State, with the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations committee and the Assembly Appropriations committee set to meet on November 26 to discuss four marijuana-related bills. If legislation is to move forward, lawmakers will have to work out a tax rate for marijuana producers and retailers in the state. Good news out of New Jersey could provide a little lift for Cronos Group (NASDAQ:CRON), Aurora Cannabis(NYSE:ACB), Aphria (NYSE:APHA), Canopy Growth (NYSE:CGC), Tilray (NASDAQ:TLRY) and gang.
FDA watch FDA decision are due on Loxo Oncology (NASDAQ:LOXO)-Bayer ‘s (OTCPK:BAYRY) larotrectinib tumor treatment and Catalyst Pharmaceutical’s (NASDAQ:CPRX) Firdapse treatment for Lambert- Eaton myasthenic syndrome. There could also be FDA action on the resubmitted application from Celltrion-Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) on the Truxima biosimilar.
Evercore ISI HealthcareX: One of the bigger healthcare conferences of the year is scheduled to run from November 26 to November 29. Presenting companies include Agilent Technologies (NYSE:A), AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV), Arena Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ARNA), Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALXN), Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB), bluebird bio (NASDAQ:BLUE), CVS Health (NYSE:CVS), GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK), Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN), Incyte (NASDAQ:INCY), Qiagen (NASDAQ:QGEN), Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) and Natera (NASDAQ:NTRA).
M&A tidbits: The window-shopping period on the American Railcar Industries (NASDAQ:ARII) merger with ITE Rail Fund expires on November 26. American Railcar trades slightly below the $70 deal price. Shareholders at LaSalle Hotel Properties (NYSE:LHO) and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE:PEB) vote on their proposed combination on November 27. If approved, the merger is slated for November 30. The deadline on the first phase of the European Commission review of the PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP)-SodaStream (NASDAQ:SODA) deal is November 30.
Consumer heat check: The Deutsche Bank Gaming, Lodging, Leisure & Restaurants One on One Conference is scheduled to take place in Scottsdale, Arizona from November 29-30. Presenting companies include BBX Capital (NYSE:BBX), Bluegreen Vacations (NYSE:BXG), Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD), Avis Budget (NASDAQ:CAR), Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR), Eldorado Resorts (NASDAQ:ERI), Cedar Fair (NYSE:FUN), Golden Entertainment (NASDAQ:GDEN), Hilton Worldwide (NYSE:HLT), International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT), MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NASDAQ:NCLH), Penn National Gaming (NASDAQ:PENN), Playa Hotels & Resorts (NASDAQ:PLYA), Red Rock Resorts (NYSE:RRR), Scientific Games (NASDAQ:SGMS), Extended Stay America (NYSE:STAY), Marriott Vacations (NYSE:VAC), Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (NYSE:WH), Wyndham Destinations (NYSE:WYND) and Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN).
Spotlight on industrials: The Credit Suisse Industrials Conference runs in Palm Beach, Florida from November 28-29. Expect to hear views on the macroeconomic climate and impact of tariffs from a list of heavy hitters that includes ADSW, Canadian Pacific (NYSE:CP), Eaton (NYSE:ETN), Fortive (NYSE:FTV), Jacobs Engineering (NYSE:JEC), Kansas City Southern (NYSE:KSU), 3M (NYSE:MMM), Mastec (NYSE:MTZ), Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR), United Continental (NASDAQ:UAL), Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT), Cummins (NYSE:CMI), Covanta (NYSE:CVA), Fluor (NYSE:FLR), Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) and SPX (NYSE:SPXC).

Professionalism and Experience. Aston Coach has been in business over 10 years, and our drivers have an average of 7 years as professional chauffeur experience. A professional chauffeur knows that their job is more than just delivering you to an address. They ensure that you have an excellent experience and that every detail of your travel needs is met. For instance, at Aston Coach we pre-verify all destination addresses and choose the most efficient routes based on the most up to date traffic and road conditions, especially for those who are traveling to Newark Airport, LGA, JFK and other airports from Morristown NJ. And, if any situation or service incident should arise, our customer service department is always available to resolve any issues fast. The prodigiously positive reviews from clients and employees are a testimony to the level of professionalism and care one can expect from Aston Coach Transportation. Compare this with Uber where pretty much anyone can be a driver, and customer service is either unreachable or dreadful according to feedback from both clients and drivers Indeed, complaints about Uber are a testimony to the lack of experience and professionalism encountered by their clients. Why risk subjecting yourself to such a potentially tragic experience?
Safety. Many professional chauffeured car services strive to incorporate tracking on their vehicles and rigorous screening and safety training of their drivers and staff. All Aston Coach vehicles are equipped with InTouch vehicle tracking software and driven by experienced chauffeurs who are fully focused on transporting you safely and comfortably.
Uber Drivers Must Use Phone. Our drivers never use cell phones while they are driving, and they are not worrying about their last or next job. On the other hand, Uber drivers must use cell phones to "accept" jobs, ‘check-in', or otherwise keep themselves on track. Moreover, Uber drivers receive relatively very little to no training on customer care and safety issues. Morristown limo service chauffeurs receive extensive training on all aspects of customer care, safety, and regional issues. At Aston Coach, chauffeurs receive additional specialized training to assist out-of-towners in their travel arrangements. Aston Coach car service chauffeurs are completely focused on you and your needs so they never need to take their eyes off the road or get distracted.
Personal and Financial Security. The staff at Aston Coach is comprised of industry professionals and hospitality experts, all of whom convey excellence in every aspect of their work. All chauffeurs undergo thorough background checks and extensive, ongoing safety training. Aston Coach has have maintained a 99.9% safety rating for the past 10 plus years. In contrast, Uber has suffered a rash of bad publicity for incidents involving their drivers harassing or assaulting customers and killing pedestrians. Obviously, Uber's background check system is so ineffectual that it could be considered non-existent. You should be confident that your personal and business information remains with your car service. You can request custom reports and rest easy that these reports remain strictly confidential. Aston Coach transportation offers automated processing and billing on a daily, weekly, semi-monthly or monthly basis by credit card or directs invoice and custom reports are available on request. All your information stays with us. Uber claims the right to share your information with third parties. This may mean sharing with your Uber driver, other industries, and even the public. The Uber privacy policy also states that your information, including your geo-location, will be stored in their system until your account is terminated which breaks your privacy.
No Surge pricing. Aston Coach satisfies the growing demand for the cost conscious consumers and corporate executives while keeping the same Book Now no matter the weather, or demand. Uber charges double when it drizzles and sometimes four or five times rate when demand is high. Reports show that Uber prices can change every three or five minutes, up to 20 times per hour. Also, with their upfront pricing, their charges and payments to drivers are different. There is NO surge pricing in Aston Coach Limousine. There are no On-Peak / Off-Peak Charges either. It's simple: Book Now will not change with the weather, demand or other external pressures.

New Jersey Board of Public Utilities studying feasibility of 13 town center microgrids
Today, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (board) president Richard S. Mroz, along with Bill Golubinski, manager of energy initiatives, division of property management and construction, Phillip S. Miller, executive director, Mercer County Improvement Authority, and Veolia North America officials, toured Veolia’s existing Trenton Thermal Energy District Network, which would serve as the technology hub for a proposed Downtown Trenton Microgrid. During the tour, Mroz announced the Board’s Town Center Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Microgrid program is funding feasibility studies for 13 separate proposed town center microgrids across the State.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (Board) is furthering the State Energy Master Plan’s (EMP) priorities of improving energy resiliency and increasing the use of DER microgrid technologies by funding 13 Town Center DER Microgrid feasibility studies.
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the Christie Administration made it a priority to improve energy resiliency and the emergency preparedness and response of the utility companies. Therefore the EMP 2015 Update contained a new section on hardening and improving utility infrastructure resiliency which supports the establishment of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as microgrids to improve the grid’s resiliency and reliability in the event of a major emergency. The Update also directed the Board to continue its work with the utility companies, local, state and federal governments, and other strategic partners to identify, design and implement Town Center DER microgrids to power critical facilities and services across the state.
“I’m excited to get the feasibility studies started for this Downtown Trenton Microgrid and the other twelve proposed microgrids as the final reports will provide great detail on options concerning designs, connections, financing options and the types of buildings to be included in a town center microgrid,” said president Mroz. “As these town center microgrids are developed around the state, communities will have the power and freedom to keep critical facilities such as hospitals, police and fire stations, water and wastewater treatment plants and buildings used to shelter residents operational and running independent of the grid during emergencies.”
The N.J. Department of the Treasury, Division of Property Management and Construction, along with Mercer County, the Mercer County Improvement Authority and the City of Trenton, filed an application for a feasibility study for the proposed Downtown Trenton Microgrid.
“A distributed generation facility in downtown Trenton would improve resiliency by reducing the potential for grid failures related to major weather events or other causes from impacting critical government services,” said Golubinski.
The Downtown Trenton Microgrid would connect and allow critical facilities within the microgrid to remain operational while the grid is down and also offer increased energy efficiency. The Trenton microgrid would connect the N.J. Justice Complex, the N.J. State House, N.J. Treasury Taxation Building, N.J. Department of Labor Building, N.J. Department of Health Building, N.J. Department of Community Affairs – Ashby Building, N.J. Department of Human Services – Capital Plaza One Building, N.J. Department of Environmental Protection Building, N.J. Treasury – Mary Roebling Building, NJ Motor Vehicle Commission Building, NJ Network Building, Old Barracks, Thomas Edison College and the NJ War Memorial.
The Downtown Trenton Microgrid would help to secure financial, legal and industrial data and records in the Taxation, Justice and Labor Buildings. Along with enabling continued government services, the microgrid would power, heat and cool buildings that could serve as assembly areas or emergency shelters, such as the War Memorial, Old Barracks Museum and Thomas Edison College. The State House would also be served by the microgrid so that key emergency services continue to function.
The existing Veolia Trenton Thermal Energy District Network (“TEDN”) is proposed to be the hub of the project. The existing combined heat and power (“CHP”) district thermal facility provides 13,000 tons of chill water capacity and 132,352 pounds per hour of steam/hot water to approximately 35 customers in the central business district of Trenton. Additional generation capacity could be provided through solar, dispatchable generation such as CHP and other new electric infrastructure to allow the proposed project to operate during normal and emergency conditions.
“Veolia is proud to support the state’s resiliency efforts and join in partnership to develop and maintain a microgrid that provides dependable power to critical buildings in the event of extreme weather or other disaster,” said John Gibson, president and COO of Veolia North America’s Municipal & Commercial Business. “Partnerships of this nature allow the state to focus on its core business of providing services to residents while Veolia delivers utility infrastructure and resiliency.”
The Board established a Town Center Distributed Energy Resource Microgrid Feasibility Study program with a budget of $1 million. However, on June 30, 2017, after receiving and evaluating 13 applications for proposed microgrids and the potential benefits offered, the Board approved a budget modification to fund all 13 applications at a total cost of $2,052,480. The program was developed to provide incentives for local and state government agencies to study the feasibility of Town Center DER microgrids. The Board approved funding for applications submitted by: Atlantic City, Camden County, Cape May County MUA, Galloway Township, Highland Park, Hoboken, Hudson County, Middletown Township, Montclair Township, Neptune Township, Paterson, Woodbridge Township, and the State of New Jersey Department of Treasury with the partners Mercer County, Mercer County Improvement Authority and Trenton.
###
Summary of Proposed Town Center Distributed Energy Resource Microgrids
Atlantic City
Atlantic City has proposed a microgrid project that would include the installation of an additional combined heat and power unit at the ACM Energy’s Midtown Thermal Control Center (MTCC) to support critical facilities that include Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, Boardwalk Hall, and Caesars/Bally’s Hotels and Casino. The MTCC currently provides chilled water and steam to customers for cooling, heating, domestic hot water and kitchen use. A combine heat and power (“CHP”) unit currently part of the MTCC system provides thermal energy to several hotel & casinos and public buildings. The proposed microgrid would include an additional CHP unit providing an additional generation of 7.5 MW electric and thermal would be connected to the critical facilities to provide additional thermal generation and electricity to the microgrid participants and other customers. Cost savings would be realized by peak power demand reduction and reduced electric generation.
Estimated time to complete the feasibility study is three to four months. The total incentive amount is $175,000 for City of Atlantic City.
Camden County
Camden County, along with the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (“CCMUA”), proposes to establish a community microgrid in Camden City. The project envisions connecting CCMUA with Covanta to allow the two facilities to exchange electrical and thermal energy during emergency and non-emergency times based on the needs of CCMUA and its connected microgrid community partners. The interconnection of the two facilities will allow Covanta to replace its use of potable water with treated wastewater for its power production operations, as part of a sustainability loop that would be created. This treated wastewater supply is expected to reduce stress on the local aquifer system. Other facilities that will benefit from the microgrid include Camden Housing Authority, Riletta Cream and H.B. Wilson Elementary Schools, New Village Supermarket, Fellowship House, Fortunas, and Citgo Gas.
The microgrid feasibility study will evaluate the technical and financial viability of providing DER to most if not all of the study areas’ electrical needs while using excess heat from the Covanta WTE facility to offset thermal loads of the CCMUA. In turn, water from CCMUA could be used to decrease Covanta’s potable water use. This self-sustainable system would also provide continuity of operations to critical public safety infrastructure (shelters, police, fire and medical) during times of natural or man-made disasters.
The estimated time to complete the feasibility study is 12 months. The total incentive amount is $150,000 for Camden County
