Though the actress Evelyn Ankers was featured in several film genres over the years, she became known as Universal's "Scream Queen" of the 1940s.
Seen here in the 1943 film The Mad Ghoul, she wears a beautiful necklace that went on to be worn numerous times over the years, including by Martha O'Driscoll as Katie Wells in the 1945 Under Western Skies.
What other Universal stars wore this dazzling piece? Find out on our website: bit.ly/Access188

Costume jewelry... should be in harmony with the design of your dress or suit. The more elaborate your gown is, the simpler your accessories must be, and the fewer you can wear. The plainer the dress, the more striking your ornaments may be, providing of course that bizarre jewelry is appropriate to your appearance and personality and costume as a whole. ... Jewelry can give your gown Parisian chic, or suggest a rummage sale.
This quotation dates from 1941 and yet its advice still holds. You can tell it is 1941 when adult women only wore pants in public for active sports or dirty work. This is why Doree Smedley wrote of your dress or suit, which would have been a skirt suit. And yet even then bizarre jewelry was around, striking in form, but not always suitable to every woman or every occasion. Although cut off from much of the rest of the world by war, Parisian chic was still the way to convey enviable style. And I am not sure that has changed as we still find women's clothing designed in New York, made somewhere in Asia, carrying a French name which must mean the idea still sells.
Smedley wrote You're Only Young Twice: The Art & Technique of Transforming Your Appearance after having a famous makeover in the pages of Good Housekeeping magazine. So many readers challenged her as a fake that she went on a lecture tour to demonstrate, wrote this book, and became an influencer for older women.
