April 19 - 26, 2017
Our dive guide on Gili Air organized a speed boat and private car to Kuta, Lombok. Ady said it would be RP800K for two people, but they charged us RP850K. We didn’t argue. It was fast and easy, but obviously not the cheapest option. The speed boat got us to Bhangsal, Lombok very quickly, but the drive to Kuta took at least 2 hours and we were grateful the driver was there for us when we arrived. He dropped us off at the hotel - easy peasy!
Sometimes it felt like time was dragging during the week in Kuta, Lombok - but now, looking back, it was one of the best parts of my trip around Asia this spring. Seven nights at Dream Hotel Kute Lombok (includes a small breakfast) was $224.49 total, but it’s worth the price as it’s the best area to stay in Lombok. It’s right next to Kuta Beach, and while the beach is mediocre and full of hawkers, there’s lots to eat nearby and it’s easy to book tours to go places or rent a scooter to go to some really nice beaches.
Unlike Bali, Lombok is Muslim, so no pork, you’ll see women wearing headscarfs, and hear the Muezzin call from a Minaret several times a day. You don’t have to worry about dressing too conservatively; shorts and a t-shirt or even a dress are fine.
At first, I had a distaste for Kuta, Lombok as it was dirty (garbage everywhere), the stray dogs are not friendly late at night, people on the street are always hassling you, and prices are highly negotiable. The locals are definitely much more crass and rough around the edges than those in Bali or on the Gili Islands. I’ve heard and read that not all areas of Lombok take to tourists kindly and maybe it’s because Lombok isn’t as major a tourist destination as others. It was difficult for me to keep a smile on my face after I realized that someone only saw me as a quick way to make money. Then, I realized that the locals were just trying to make a living and I was in a very beautiful place with more than enough money to live well, so I chilled out and was less defensive.
Kuta is was the most developed area I saw in Lombok and still it was just a few convenience stores, many open-air bamboo construction businesses, a couple of ATMs, and a handful of restaurants. Kuta is what Bali must have looked like 20 years ago.
Food
Local food at warungs will be the most affordable but the foreign food was too tempting for me (albeit pricey in comarison). A surprisingly high number of wood oven pizza, but I didn’t really enjoy it. My favorite places to be were KRNK (burgers), The Mexican in Town (Mexican, duh), El Bazar (Moroccan), Nuggets (Indonesian), MILK (coffee), and Bus Beach Bar (drinks). No matter where you are, you will be pestered by kids selling bracelets, some as young as 5-years-old. They’re children, but they know all the sales’ tricks and several languages. They really know how to test your patience, but please be kind to them. It broke my heart when I saw adults be mean to them.
Booty the tour guide
We befriended a local named Booty. He owned a tourist hut and his wife owned a clothing shop. He was quick to smile but never laughed at our jokes. We gave him a lot of money for tours and to rent scooters, but he always seemed unhappy about negotiating and asked us to pay more so “we could both be happy.” He was an interesting character, as it was obvious that his business was in tourism but he didn’t seem to like tourists much.
Waterfall + villages trip
We paid Booty RP550K to drive us to waterfalls and two villages. This was a private tour and we could ask to stop anywhere + stay in any place for as long as we’d like.
First, he drove us to a park that had a group of five waterfalls (including Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls). Admission is RP10K for locals but Booty told us we were required to have a guide since we were foreigners -- we later did some research and found this was not true. The guide wanted to charge us per waterfall seen, so we chose to see three, which was RP90K a person. The guide was immensely kind + helpful, though, and probably the nicest person we met in Lombok.
Rob jumped off the first waterfall, which was 11 meters/~35 feet. You couldn’t jump off any others but there were spots to swim in cool water from Lake Segara Anak of Mount Rinjani.
Benang Stokel features two waterfalls falling more than 30 meters down a steep cliff face covered with ferns and jungle vegetation. Benang means “thread”, and describes the thin streams of water that gush down the cliff, like silver threads. The waterfall to the left is the higher of the two and is more powerful. The fall on the right side splashes into a small rocky pool at the bottom.
Although parts of the trek can be a bit slippery and arduous, the track is safe and is not really challenging if you go slow. The view of Benang Kelambu at the end looks straight out of a hair-product commercial. Kelambu means “netting” and refers to the waterfalls, which spread out across the greenery like finely draped nets.
After the waterfalls, Booty took us to two traditional Sasak Villages. The Sasak are the indigenous people of this island, which today make about 85% of the total population of Lombok. First, Pusat Kerajinan Tenun PATUH, where I learned to weave (women in that village have to learn to weave before they can get married) and then purchased a large weaving for RP750K (negotiated down from RP1500K). Negotiating was hard and price was based on nationality; it hurt to hear the people there refer to us openly as “US dollars.”
The second village we went to was called Sade. This village is set up for 10-15 minute tours and you can only walk around led by a tour guide. It’s set up for tourists but still has a very much a lived-in village feel. He gave us some interesting insights into life there and we walked around, looked inside some houses, saw their temple, how they store food, etc. We learned about some of their traditional customs, like what they do when they want to marry someone, which is that the man kidnaps the woman! He takes a risk though because if she says no, he has to pay a fine. The guide will ask for a donation at the end; our guide book suggested a minimum tip of RP40K.
Snorkel trip to the small gilis
The three Gili islands are quite well-known, but gili actually means “small island” and there are many of them. Booty organized a private car to the Lembar harbor and boat to let us snorkel three gilis (Naggu, Sudak, and Kedis) for RP800K (total price for two people), which included snorkel gear. Again, we could stop anywhere we’d like and stay in any location for as long as we’d like.
It took around thirty minutes to reach Gilli Nanggu by boat from the harbor. The island had a RM5K per person “cleaning fee” but there was quite a bit of garbage on the beach and in the ocean. It made me sad to see other tourists standing on coral and feeding the fish. Bad ocean behavior, so I tried to swim away from them. Lots of wonderful fish to see.
After we were done, we hopped back on the boat and traveled ten minutes to Gili Sudak (sometimes known as Suda). Sudak is even smaller than Nanggu and although the beach wasn’t as wide or long as the one on Nanggu, it was the perfect shady spot for a coconut drink. You can also have a meal here if you’d like. Some more nice fish to see in the ocean here.
The last island, Kedis, is very tiny. No bigger than the size of a tennis court, except round, with a few trees in the middle.
Renting scooters
Renting scooters is a must to explore Lombok as public transit is nonexistent. It is my favorite place to ride scooters, ever. The roads were easy to navigate, traffic wasn’t unreasonable, and other drivers were kind (water buffalo included). We paid Booty RP50K a day for a scooter, and these scooters were in really terrible condition (e.g. weak brakes and missing side mirrors).
The first thing we did was drive a mile up the mountain to eat at the Ashtari Restaurant. The restaurant has sweeping views of Kuta and its surrounding hills and bays. Go early and get a good spot, like a comfy bean bag chair at the edge. The atmosphere is great for a drink and snacks.
Then, you can drive out to Mawun Beach (Pantai Mawun). The locals will charge you RP10K per motorbike as an entrance fee. Same fee if you drive a bit further to Selong Belanak Beach. Surrounded by mountains, the beaches are all unbelievably beautiful and shockingly undeveloped. You’ll pay RP5K to use a toilet/changing room --only one per beach. And, there are only 1-2 beach shacks to get a bite to eat or something to drink. A sun lounger is RP50K each. It’s not fancy at all but prices are reasonable. They’re likely the best beaches I’ve ever been to in my life.
The airport shuttle in the morning costs RP100K a person, but we negotiated a private car with Booty for the afternoon at RP220K for two people.
Other things to do
If I had more time in Lombok, I’d probably be interested in some of the following:
The second largest volcano in Indonesia is nearby. You can hike Mount Rinjani but it’ll take at least 2 days. Even the 3-day hike is bound to be killer. The crater lake looks incredible.
I ran out of energy to visit Tangsi Beach (aka Pink Beach). I was told not to go by scooter because it’s a 2-hour drive from Kuta and the last 30 minutes are very rough road. The sand on this beach is actually white but the bright red Organ Pipe corals gives it a pink hue. Might be a painful beach to walk barefoot on but sure sounds beautiful.
The Tanjung Aan Beach is also known to be beautiful for its turquoise sea and white sand. Apparently, you can climb a rock to see the view over the two bays and beaches of Aan.
You can spend a day at the 4-star hotel, Novotel, for a small fee, lounging under a beachfront cabana, ordering food and using their swimming pool. Love enjoying luxury at the fraction of a hotel stay!
Also consider a multiple day boat trip to Komodo where you can see Komodo dragons in real life. Amazing diving and snorkeling there too.

A Quick Travel Guide to Dili, East Timor
If you’re thinking about visiting East Timor, this post is your quick travel guide to Dili and its surroundings. My goal is to provide the main information you need to start planning your trip, and all of the details below are based on my own recent travels to this country.
Of course, once you have a read, if you still have any questions, just let me know!
Travel Guide to Dili: PART 1
TOURIST VISAS
Travelers from the following European countries can enter East Timor without a visa for up to 90 days as a tourist: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
For all other nationalities, you must obtain a visa, which depends on how you enter the country:
Land crossing – If you cross the land border with West Timor (Indonesia), you will need to apply in advance for a “Visa Authorization” using the government’s online visa system. You then take the visa authorization with you to the border, pay a $30 USD fee and if all goes well, you’ll get your visa to enter. This visa is usually valid for 90 days. (Indonesian and Portuguese citizens don’t need to apply in advance.)
Arrival by Air – If you plan to arrive in Dili by air, you will simply obtain the visa at the airport upon arrival. You cannot apply in advance for air arrivals. The cost is $30 USD for a visa that should be valid for up to 30 days. However, when I arrived, the immigration officer only gave me a 10 day visa for some reason so the 30 days isn’t set in stone. (Instructions on obtaining the visa are below.)
ARRIVAL
Once you step off the plane, you’ll simply walk along the above walkway to the tiny Arrivals Hall. Before you enter the building though, you should head to the small “Visa on Arrival” window on your left. If you’re from one of the countries above that doesn’t need a visa, you don’t need to visit this window. For all other nationalities, you need to go to the window and pay $30 USD for the visa. Once you pay, you’ll get a visa sticker that you take with you to immigration right inside the building.
Before standing in the immigration line, be sure to fill out an Arrival Card as they do not provide these on the plane.
Once through immigration, there’s a sole luggage carousel. After collecting your luggage, you’ll head through a very casual customs inspection (although you will need to fill out a quick customs form here in order to pass through). And then you hand the form over, walk through the door and just like that you’re outside, where drivers are waiting for incoming passengers and where you can find transportation if needed.
*Most hotels offer free airport pickup and drop-off or they can arrange it for a fee. Otherwise, from what I was told, it should cost around $10 USD for the 10 minute taxi ride from the airport to any hotel in central Dili.
MONEY
The main currency in East Timor is US dollars and that is what’s used everywhere. When paying for small items, you might receive small change in the form of Timorese centavos. However, 1 centavo is equivalent to 1 US cent so it’s basically the same as using US coins.
ATMs – There are ATMs all around Dili and I had no problem taking money out of several different ones. With that said, the ANZ Bank ATMs charge a $7 USD fee (at least for US card holders) so you might want to use the other banks’ ATMs. None of the others charged me a fee.
Exchanging cash – Apart from hotels, which offered lower exchange rates, I didn’t see any other money exchange offices around Dili. However, I’m sure you could go into a bank to exchange Euros, AUD, GBP and so on.
STAYING CONNECTED/INTERNET
If you need to be reliably connected to the internet during your trip, I highly recommend getting a SIM card. As my girlfriend and I both work online, we need a relatively good connection and the Wifi we experienced in our hotel and in a couple of cafes was poor at best. Often, it was not usable at all.
To obtain a SIM card, simply visit the Timor Telecom shop inside the Hotel Timor right in the city center along the water. For around $6 USD you’ll get a SIM card with a 3GB data package. This connection worked very well everywhere we went in Dili and allowed us to hotspot to our laptops to get our work done. (There is also a Timor Telecom shop in the Timor Plaza Shopping Complex.)
Travel Guide to Dili: PART 2
ACCOMMODATION
I did a decent amount of research before choosing a place to stay. In the end, I went with the Discovery Inn. For $70 USD per night, we had a large, comfortable room, with a slightly rundown bathroom, located right off a small courtyard. The location was excellent, only a 5 minute walk from the water and 10 minute walk from the city center. There were also plenty of restaurants and a large supermarket on the same block. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful and the room came with a great breakfast and free airport pickup and drop-off.
Of course, there are other options in town too, not a ton, but a good handful. You can find a couple of backpacker hostels, decently rated mid-range hotels and a luxury property or two.
One quick search for “Dili” on booking.com shows all the options on one page: Booking.com – Dili *With this link above you’ll also save about $25 off any hotel booking.
Overall, for what you get, the accommodation prices are definitely high. However, that’s due to many reasons, such as the need to import everything, the expenses involved with offering constant electricity and maintaining the building and also the simple fact that most visitors to East Timor are business people whose companies are paying for the rooms.
We flew in from Bali where the same room I had in Dili would probably cost $15 USD per night over there! But that’s how it goes and again, there are definitely reasons why the prices are higher.
DINING
When it comes to eating, there are a decent amount of options in the city. You’ll find small local eateries, Portuguese-inspired restaurants, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, fast food and more.
We didn’t venture too far from our hotel at night, mostly because we were tired after long days out and about and there really weren’t many taxis on the road in the evenings. So we generally stayed in our neighborhood to eat dinner.
Here’s where we ate some meals:
Diya – This restaurant is attached to the Discovery Inn Hotel and while it was a bit pricey, there were some reasonably-priced items on the menu, too. The food is more western style but was very good.
Castaway – A friend of a friend that had lived in Dili a while back told me about this place and we ended up there for lunch one day. It has a huge menu with all kinds of food and everything we ate, from soup to homemade veg burgers to salads was excellent, and very well priced.
Great Wall – This cozy Chinese restaurant was a great find. Excellent food, huge portions and decent prices. One dish would be plenty for two people.
Places that we didn’t have time to eat at but that were also recommended were:
DiZa – apparently a great place for a sunset dinner along the water Agora Food Studio – healthy food all cooked with local ingredients Rolls N Bowls – cheap and good Vietnamese food
Food can naturally be a big part of travel so I would recommend doing a little research about specific places in order to figure out which eateries might be best for you. Or simply wander around and see what you find!
TRANSPORTATION
Walking – Getting around Dili and its surroundings was actually quite easy. First, within the city center, you can pretty much walk anywhere, if you’re there when it’s not 40C (100F) outside! There are sidewalks almost everywhere, very little traffic on the roads and you’ll end up seeing a lot more if you’re exploring by foot. And you’ll pass many people in the streets of course, most of whom will be super friendly and be up for a quick chat.
Taxi – When you need a taxi though, all you do is walk to the street and wait for one to come by. Stick out your hand and that’s it. I would always tell the driver where I wanted to go before getting in and in the beginning, I asked for the price as well. Every single time, the taxi driver quoted me exactly what the hotel staff told me is the normal fare. For a short trip, it was $2 USD and for a longer trip across the city, $3 USD. When the driver didn’t know our destination, we settled on a price based on some other landmark that was close by.
We never had any problems with taxis. They are actually quite fascinating in Dili as most of them have the front windshields almost completely covered up. Yes, they put on some kind of sticker to block out the sun but the problem is that the sticker that covers 80% of the windshield is not transparent, so it leaves only a tiny section of the window for the driver to look through. And then they stuff all kinds of circular mirrors, stuffed animals and other random things up there as well, which blocks the view even more.
Sometimes, the driver didn’t really understand where we wanted to go and didn’t even know the street names (including the main avenues) but they’re all friendly enough and dedicated to figuring it out, which we always did. I would often turn on my Google maps and simply direct the driver as we drove.
(We also took a taxi out to the famous Cristo Rei statue. This longer 20 minute trip cost $4 USD one way.)
Microlets – Within Dili and its surroundings, you also have the option of taking a microlet. These are funky, shared minivans that are typically owner-operator and run along certain routes. We took one from Cristo Rei back to an intersection near our hotel towards the end of our stay but I wish we had taken these starting on the first day! The only thing is that you need to know which van to take but once you see your van (the route number is in the window or on the side somewhere), you flag it down and get in.
When you want to get off, just yell out to the driver or push the buzzer, pay your 25 centavos on the way out and you’re good to go.
Here’s a pretty good map of the microlet routes in Dili, although it might be missing a route or two: Dili Microlet routes
Most vans are very creatively decorated and named and the drivers have their favorite tunes blasting out of the speakers, definitely making this a cultural experience worth trying out. And as more people get in to the van, it’s a perfect opportunity to interact with more Timorese that will definitely be surprised by your presence inside!
(Van #12 goes between Cristo Rei/Jesus Backside Beach and the city center, making it a great option for this trip.)
Rental Car – Apparently you can also rent a car or a car with driver but from what we heard, it’s quite pricey starting at around $100 USD per day. Also, while the roads in the city were quite good, many of the roads outside the city, especially up in the mountains, are not so good and require a 4WD vehicle, even if it looks like a main road on the map.
Travel Guide to Dili: PART 3
ACTIVITIES
Within the city of Dili, there is enough to keep you busy for several days. Here’s a list of options:
Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum – This new structure is a must-visit as the exhibits inside detail the difficult history of the island and its people. We tried to visit on Saturday and even though it said it was open, it was actually closed. It seems to only be open Tuesday to Friday. Entrance was $2 USD.
Santa Cruz Cemetery – The site of a 1991 massacre, when Indonesian troops open fired on a peaceful memorial service, it’s another important place to visit to truly understand the history of this country.
Tais Market – All of the stalls here sell Tais, which is cloth made from an East Timorese traditional method of weaving. It’s well worth a visit and even though this market in the heart of the city center appears to be set up for tourists, during the hour we spent here, we were the only people walking around the two dozen stalls. The shopkeepers were friendly, the products were good quality and colorful and the prices were extremely cheap. We ended up buying two small-sized pieces of work and one larger piece (about the size of a coffee table) for a total of $25 USD.
Taibesi Market – This is the main local market and it’s located about a 10-15 minute drive out of town, at the foot of the mountains. It’s quite large and has everything you’d expect from such a market. And while there weren’t many shoppers there at all (it was basically empty), we had a great time interacting with the various vendors and learning about what they were selling. After meeting one very kind fruit seller, we decided to buy a few of the tasty red bananas he was offering. I handed over $1.00 and he just kept filling up the bag until we had 15 of those bananas. I highly recommend wandering around the market and talking to as many people there as you can!
Sunset walks – As the sun begins to go down, it’s great to head down to the water and walk along the ‘boardwalk’ or the beach in front of the Novo Turismo Resort and Spa. There’s a few vendors out there selling drinks and coconuts, a few NGO workers jogging around and plenty of benches or stretches of sand to watch the sunset over the water.
Cristo Rei – A towering statue of Jesus standing on a globe, it was built under Indonesian rule in an attempt to persuade the Timorese to abandon their desire for independence (it failed). Located at the edge of a hilly piece of land that juts out into the sea, there’s a 500 step climb from the parking lot up to the statue. I will say, the views from the statue looking back down towards the coast is beyond spectacular, making the climb up more than worthwhile.
The drive there isn’t so bad either…
Jesus Backside Beach – I have no idea what the official name of this beach is but it often is referred to as Jesus Backside Beach because it is the beach located behind the Jesus statue. When you walk back down from the statue towards the parking lot, about half way down you’ll find some steps leading off to the left. Take those steps and in a couple of minutes you’ll be on a beautiful white sand beach! The beach was very empty when we were there, with maybe 5 or 6 locals hanging out, too. There are no facilities, shops or food…it’s just a relatively untouched, super picturesque beach to enjoy, with warm turquoise water and some goats wandering around the sand as well.
There’s another beach opposite the parking lot of the Cristo Rei statue but that one is right next to the road and didn’t look nearly as impressive as the huge stretch of white sand on the other side.
DAY TRIPS / EXCURSIONS
Getting out of Dili is also easy. There are local buses and also the possibility of hiring a guide/driver for a day trip, or longer. Since we had limited time, we hired a local guide, Julio, through Timor Adventures and he was excellent. He really gave us a great deal of insight into every aspect of life in East Timor and was ready to answer every question we had with statistics, personal stories and endless details about the history, politics and social situation of the country.
Gleno – Julio took us out into the mountains, through the coffee plantations and over to the very quiet town of Gleno. We had a chance to hang out at the Gleno market where, once again, we met super friendly people everywhere we turned. There were no other foreigners here and it seemed like anyone we made eye contact with gave us a big smile and wanted to interact in some way. I could have spent a couple of days in this town, just for the interactions alone.
Liquica – Coming back out of the mountains, we drove down the coast to the small town of Liquica where we had lunch along the beach and then walked along the sand (again, we were the only people around, with nobody else on this long stretch of beach).
Maubara – From Liquica we continued further down the coast to Maubara, home of an old Portuguese fort. And even though it’s just the outer walls that are still standing, there’s a small little shop and restaurant inside those walls that is run by a local women’s cooperative. It’s a good place for a coffee, meal or to purchase some hand-made local items at, again, very inexpensive prices. The town also has a small market across from the fort and another stretch of beach without a soul on it.
While the towns themselves might not seem like the most fascinating places on Earth, they are all worth visiting nonetheless. When traveling to East Timor, the experience is all about learning – about the people, the history and the current situation. And the best way to do that is to simply get out there, travel around and try to interact with as many Timorese as you can.
All of the people we came across were simply wonderful. Huge smiles, enthusiastic thumbs ups and always a willingness to communicate, despite any language barrier. This is what greeted us every single day, everywhere we went. This is also what made this trip so unique and rewarding.
For more reading about my travels to East Timor, here’s another post I wrote: What It’s Like to Travel to East Timor
I hope this travel guide to Dili was useful and I wish you a great trip!
Any questions? For those familiar with East Timor, any additional information or advice that I can add to this travel guide to Dili?

A Comprehensive Travel Guide for Myanmar and F.A.Q’s
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand, and this Myanmar Travel Guide makes for a comprehensive travel resource that will help you plan your trip to Myanmar.
With the opening of the land border, a couple of years ago, and the ease of obtaining an E Visa, travelling to Myanmar from India has become quite easy and affordable.
I was lucky enough to have visited Myanmar for New Year’s with Debjani (The Vagabong), where we visited the Big 4 destinations, i.e. Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake and Yangon, which also forms the famous Golden Kite Itinerary of Myanmar.
Each of these destinations is unique in itself, and while, Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the country’s largest city, is home to bustling markets, numerous parks and lakes, and the towering, gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, which contains Buddhist relics and dates to the 6th century; Bagan on the other hand is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to countless temples and Pagodas, including the Shwezigon Pagoda.
The Itinerary that we followed for our Trip to Myanmar was :
Imphal (1 Day) – Moreh Border – Tamu – Mandalay (2 Days) – Bagan (3 Days) – Inle Lake (2 Days) – Yangon (1 Day) – Kolkata
It took us almost 24 hours to reach Mandalay from Imphal by road, which included an hour for all the India – Myanmar Border crossing formalities, around 2-3 hours for different meals throughout the journey.
The journey time between Mandalay and Bagan is 4-5 hours, whereas from Bagan to Inle Lake is 7-8 hours, and from Inle Lake to Yangon is 9-10 hours, which went by very comfortably in the VIP Semi Sleeper Bus that we took.
Our main mode of transport for the entire trip was the Bus.
Now that you’ve got a vague idea about Myanmar and our trip, its time to scroll down and know more about Myanmar, in this Myanmar Travel Guide as I’ve tried to answer most of the Frequently Asked Questions, a traveller has in their minds, before planning a Trip to Myanmar.
[toc]
Q – Do I need a visa to travel to Myanmar?
Yes, you need a Visa to Travel to Myanmar. However, there are some nationalities that are exempt from Visa for 14 / 30 days, and some are applicable for Visa on Arrival or eVisa. Check here to see the eligibility of your passport for entry into Myanmar.
The Bagan Sunrise !
Q – How To apply for the Myanmar VISA?
The Myanmar VISA process simplified, in 9 steps below.
The cost of the Myanmar eVisa is 50 USD, and the whole process is very simple and straightforward.
Step 1 – Head to the official website – https://evisa.moip.gov.mm
Step 2 – Go to Apply VISA > New Application > Tourist VISA
Step 3 – Fill out your Passport Number | Nationality | Email address | Port of Entry and Proceed to the next page.
Step 4 – Fill out your Personal Information
Step 5 – Make the payment of 50 USD via Credit Card / Debit Card
Step 6 – You will get acknowledgement receipt via mail which will mention your Application Number, Passport Number and Payment Reference Number
Step 7 – If you have provided all necessary details as required, you will get another mail in a matter of hours or maximum 2 days, with the VISA Application Result. Print this and keep it along with your Passport
Step 8 – Get the VISA Letter stamped during Immigration and keep it safely, until you exit the country.
Step 9 – Enjoy Your Trip to Myanmar
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Q – When should I apply for my visa?
Ideally, you should apply for it, anytime between 20-30 days, before your planned arrival in Myanmar, as the approval letter you get after applying for the eVisa is valid for 90 days, from the date of issue.
Q – Do I need insurance for this Trip to Myanmar?
Yes, it’s highly recommended to get Travel Insurance, before travelling to Myanmar. And I personally recommend you to go ahead with SafetyWings – The Travel Medical Insurance for Travellers.
Q – What is the best way to stay connected?
The most economical way of staying connected while Travelling in Myanmar, is to get a local Myanmar SIM Card !
As of now, you can choose between MPT, Ooredoo and Telenor. The average rate for the 5 GB data bundle pack with a validity of 30 days is around 5,000 Kyat.
Getting a local SIM Card in Myanmar, turns out to be extremely helpful, especially when you are planning your walking tour in Mandalay, or while navigating through Bagan on your E Bike.
Q – How easy is it to get money exchanged in Myanmar?
There are plenty of places where you can get money exchanged in all the major cities in Myanmar. However, if you are entering Myanmar, via road crossing the border from India, it’s highly recommended to exchange your Indian Currency into Kyat in Tamu, before starting the journey to Mandalay.
You can still convert Indian Currency in Bagan, but it’s a tough nut to crack in Mandalay !
The best option is to either carry USD’s which can easily be exchanged anywhere, or withdraw from ATM’s which are found in plenty, everywhere.
Q – Can I make payments via Credit Card / Debit Card in Myanmar?
Yes, at most of the resorts / hotels / hostels / restaurants, you can pay via Credit Card or Debit Card, however, it’s better to have Kyat on you, as it becomes easier, when you are shopping or eating out.
Also note that the businesses might charge a surcharge when paying by card, and the exchange rate might not be the best.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Q – Is it safe to travel in Myanmar as a Solo Traveller?
To be honest, Myanmar while still underdeveloped as compared to other South-East-Asian nations like Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia, is perfectly safe for Solo Travellers of both the sexes.
Myanmar is one of the safest countries in Asia. Crime goes against the Buddhist culture and theft and robberies are rare.
The hostels, which already exist in major tourist hotspots like Mandalay, Bagan Inle Lake and Yangon, provide a safe haven for solo travellers, and provide ample opportunities to interact with other travellers as well.
Q – What is the best time to travel to Myanmar?
The best time to travel to Myanmar is in the winters from mid October/November to February/March when the country is green, dry and relatively cool.
April to May is the worst time to visit as the temperatures can go as high up as 40 deg C.

Q – What to Do in Mandalay?
Tracing back its origin in 1857, Mandalay is now the second largest city in Myanmar. It is found in the upper part of the nation, situated on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. Mandalay is the place, which was home to the Royal Palace of the Konbaung Dynasty, which was the last government and free realm of Burma.
Be that as it may, Mandalay was bombed in WWII and the palace vanished, alongside much else. The royal residence was revamped during the 1990s, and from that point forward Mandalay has experienced a heedless development blast that was never about aesthetics.
The first place we explored was the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda which is located near the southern entry gate to reach Mandalay Hill.
The Kyauktawgyi Pagoda was built by King Mindon in 1853 on the model of the Ananda Temple at Pagan. The pagoda was completed during 1878. The highlight of the Kyauktawgyi Paya is the huge seated Buddha figure sculpted from a single block of pale green marble from the Sagyin quarry twelve miles north of Mandalay. It is believed that about Ten Thousand men took about 2 weeks to transport the stone block from the Ayeyarwaddy River to the site where it is today.
Next, we started climbing the stairs up to Mandalay Hill which took us around 30 odd minutes. We primarily went for the views. And it didn’t disappoint us at all 😜
All the way up Mandalay Hill
While we were up there the multiple white stupas caught our attention, and that is where we headed to after climbing down the stairs.
The multiple white stupas with slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings along with the large golden zedi is known as the Sandamuni Pagoda.
Sandamuni Pagoda as viewed from the top of Mandalay Hill
As the large golden zedi was under restoration, we weren’t able to see the largest iron Buddha statue in Burma. However, the multiple white stupas made for an amazing setting as the sun decided to give us a little peek a boo before going down.
On our 2nd day in Mandalay, we explored the different foods and items in the by lanes of Mandalay with Beyond Boundaries Myanmar, and it gave the kick-start to our Myanmar Trip that we needed.
Post our food adventure, we made our way to the jetty, where we crossed the Ayeyarwady river, to reach Mingun, where the highlight was the Hsinbyume Paya, apart from Mingun Pahtodawgyi which is a monumental uncompleted stupa and then finally headed to U Bein Bridge, our last attraction in Mandalay, to witness the sunset. But all we saw were human heads. U Bein Bridge during sunsets is a typical case of the attraction losing its charm owing to overtourism.
One of the most unique Sunset Shots captured by me!
Q – What to Eat and Drink in Myanmar?
So, in case you are wondering What to Eat and Drink in Mandalay, we got your back 😎 📸 1 Tempura and Sticky Rice (White and Brown)
📸 2 Mohingar – Essentially a rice noodle soup with fish/chicken/vegetables, usually consumed during breakfast. It is also dubbed to be the national dish of Myanmar.
📸 3 Fried Stuffed Sweet Potato and Fried Bananas
📸4 Rice Cakes
📸5 Khao Soi / Khao Suey – Served widely in Myanmar, but modified versions of Khao Soi can be found in Laos and Northern Thailand as well. Traditionally, the dough for the rice noodles is spread out on a cloth stretched over boiling water. After steaming the large sheet noodle is then rolled and cut with scissors, cooked in coconut milk and served with a variety of contrasting condiments.
📸6 Fresh Fruit Juices / Smoothies
📸7 Burmese Tea Leaf Salad / Lahpet thoke –Lahpet means “green tea,” and thoke, meaning “salad,” is an eclectic mix of flavours and textures that includes soft, pickled tea leaves, crisp, roasted peanuts and other crunchy beans, toasted sesame seeds, fried garlic.
And last but not the least
📸8 BEER
Q – Tips and Recommendations for Mandalay?
If possible, visit U Bein Bridge during sunrise, and go directly under the bridge. And if that’s not an option, making the sunset the only time, plan to reach U Bein Bridge an hour earlier, and head straight under the bridge, and find your vantage point to capture the sun going down, behind the stilts.
However, if you have more time in Mandalay, I would highly recommend you check out these Top Things To Do in Mandalay and add the following experiences in your trip to Mandalay!

Q – Tips and Recommendations for Bagan.
Everything is scattered in Bagan making E Bike the best option to travel.
The best location for choosing accommodation is on Nyuang U – Bagan Road, closer to the river.
Bagan is expensive – Be prepared 😔
There isn’t much to do here. So, keep that book you wanted to read with you, but didn’t find time for it. 😉
Everything closes at 9-10 PM.
When you catch Sunrise and some local approach and tell you that they’ll take you to a good spot – Go for it. 😎
ATM’s everywhere but if you want to exchange Indian currency, there’s one currency exchange near India Hut restaurant.
No Grabs in Bagan. And Tuk Tuk are expensive, so HAGGLE!
Go to Mt Popa but during the Afternoon, so, you can catch the Sunset from the top.
Get pampered after a long day of exploring. It’s cheap – 5 USD for an hour-long foot massage / 8 USD for 1 hour full body traditional massage. 😎

After a full day of travelling we found ourselves at ViewPoint Eco Lodge and were delighted to be spending the first few nights of 2020, in the lap of luxury, and being pampered by the hospitable staff here.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
While our time at ViewPoint Eco Lodge was spent either trying out different food items from the Shan cuisine, getting pampered at the SPA or just appreciating the beauty of the moment, sitting by the water side and listening to the sounds of nature. We managed to explore the beauty of Lake Inle when we stepped out of ViewPoint Ecolodge, in our private speed boat. Yes we saw the famous fisherman of Inle Lake, strike a pose for the tourists with their traditional bamboo nets. We also visited the Lotus Stem weaving factory and the Cigar Making factory and interacting with the long necked women – Kayan Tribe was the highlight.

One of the experiences, during our stay at ViewPoint Eco Lodge which stood out was having our lunch on a boat in the middle of the lake, being prepared by the cooks on another boat, and being brought to us on yet another boat.
The whole experience of trying out the unique Shan Cuisine coupled with the fantastic wine, was too good to be true, and we managed to gulp down the entire bottle by the end of our meal.
We also visited the Red Mountain Winery, which provides an awesome panoramic view of Inle Lake and the surrounding mountains, making it the perfect spot to chase the sunset.
Q – Tips and Recommendations for Inle Lake.
As we had limited time on hand, we had to skip out on the 2-day hike from Kalaw to Inle Lake, but this is a popular choice with many backpackers and travellers, and something that we’ll recommend in this Myanmar Travel Guide, for you to check out for yourself.

Q – What to do in Yangon and Where to Stay?
Yangon was our last destination in our Myanmar Itinerary, and as we were short on time, we could only spend a day in Yangon.
But we managed to do quite a bit in one day, thanks to Beyond Boundaries Myanmar, such as visiting both the Sule Pagoda and the famous Shwedagon Pagoda, exploring the old colonial area on foot, and the village of Dala across the river in a Trishaw.
The icon of Yangon
We were lucky that the hotel where we decided to stay in Yangon –Esperado Lake View Hotel, had a rooftop dining area and a bar, from where we enjoyed panoramic views of the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Yangon Skyline during our Breakfast and Dinner there.
The Panoramic View from the rooftop of Hotel Esperado Lake View Yangon

Asia Ripe for Stablecoin Adoption in 2019
Following the aftermath of 2018’s price drop—which saw the value of Bitcoin below 80 percent of the value from its all-time high—stablecoins are looking to become a more attractive crypto solution this year, particularly in the Asia-Pacific Region.
As we begin the new year, it’s important for us to take stock of the stablecoin landscape, and be aware of what the industry should work on to benefit the user.
Unlike Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, stablecoins are more immune to price fluctuations because they are pegged to tangible and more stable assets, like the US dollar (USD).
With the current market sentiment turning more towards less price-volatile options, it is unsurprising that interest in the space is on the rise. Most recently, big tech companies like Facebook have even been rumored to have stablecoin solutions in the works.
Read: Binance CFO Interview: 2 Main Things Will Drive Mainstream Crypto Adoption
Setting the Stage for the Future of Stablecoins
In the past year, the sector has made headway in developing several options for USD-pegged coins, such as the USD Coin (USDC) created by Circle and Coinbase, the Gemini Dollar (GUSD) and TrueUSD (TUSD).
We can expect this to develop further in the year ahead, especially with algorithmic stablecoins. These types of stablecoins are essentially smart contracts where people put up collateral in a cryptocurrency (like Ethereum) to back the value of a stablecoin pegged to a fiat currency. With this method, there is no need for KYC measures to be put in place because there is no need for a counterparty to maintain reserves or redeem money from. This mechanism was pioneered by Bitshares and later adopted by MakerDAO.
On the adoption front, it is encouraging that cryptocurrency ATM usage has grown as well. Around the world, there are some well-established companies that have built good solutions, like Bitstop in the US, Localcoin in Canada, as well as Genesis Block and HKBitcoinATM in Hong Kong. Simply put, more cryptocurrency ATMs means improved access to stablecoins, which will only help the ecosystem mature and evolve for the better.
Also, the emergence of more non-USD stablecoins will signal that the market is maturing further and ready for the benefits of stablecoins globally. Asia Has All the Right Ingredients to Drive Stablecoin Adoption
In Asia’s emerging markets, the technology’s application in the remittance sector is especially promising. According to a recent report by Remitscope, 53 percent of remittance flows worldwide could be attributed to countries from the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.
Current traditional money transfers are far from instantaneous or frictionless and often result in the end customer absorbing unnecessary transaction costs. Stablecoins via blockchain technology can improve the speed and stability of these transfers—particularly in countries where financial infrastructure is still in development.
The regulatory environment in the APAC region is also particularly favorable to encourage such innovation. Without overt regulatory guidance in jurisdictions like Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Indonesia, crypto-solutions have been able to flourish. For instance, Indonesia’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, INDODAX, has been so well received that it is set to overtake the 106-year-old national stock exchange’s number of registered users.
In terms of adoption, they are well placed to adopt stablecoins. While technology advancements, (such as desktop and laptop computers) may have been slow to reach many emerging markets in Asia, countries in the region are quickly catching up.
Whole populations have leapfrogged to adopt new technologies with the benefit of doing so without legacy systems. Myanmar, for instance, saw its mobile penetration rate in recent years spike to 90 percent. Indonesia, which has one of the largest population sizes in Southeast Asia, holds a similar story and now sits among the top 10 countries globally for mobile internet engagement.
More established Asian markets are important to consider as well. Inbound remittances outpace official development assistance in the region by more than 10 fold.
With interest in this solution growing, a stablecoin with a well-developed user experience built into the remittance solution would appeal to these markets. It is also very likely that we will see more non-USD stablecoins being tailormade for Asia—especially in countries like Japan, Korea, and Cambodia.
In 2019, Work on the Backend to Benefit the End User
To drive stablecoin adoption in 2019, further development is needed in both cryptocurrency exchanges and various cryptocurrency services.
First, making it easy to digitally deposit and withdraw fiat currencies into and out of exchanges remains a huge hurdle to widespread adoption of cryptocurrency as the process is tedious and transactions can take a long time or, if they are fast, involve expensive fees.
There is also still a need to solve issues surrounding settlement and velocity in fiat deposits and withdrawals into exchanges. Top exchanges generally take weeks to process transactions and this often leads to increased customer service tickets. This puts pressure on exchanges and, ultimately, can deter banking partners from utilizing crypto solutions.
Another issue is the margins on cash to cryptocurrency exchanges are very high, sitting at 7-10 percent globally. Not only is it expensive to transact and exchange cryptocurrencies on exchanges, but it is also less convenient when needing to withdraw cash. That is why there is a premium on cryptocurrency ATMs.
Cross-border payments and converting cryptocurrency to cash should be made more convenient for users across the world. Stablecoins will be a necessary tool in order to reduce friction when sending money between counterparties as its often quicker, cheaper, and far more convenient. To improve the user experience, I would also encourage money transfer companies to start integrating cash to crypto features in their respective locations. Overall, consumers will benefit the most from this increase in competition with more options in providers and more locations to conduct their exchanges locally.
In the long term, with more stablecoins from various other currencies being made available, we will start to make exchanges become more liquid, enabling greater efficiency in the crypto ecosystem. Risks for companies dealing with cryptocurrency to fiat gateways will also be reduced as they no longer need to worry about banking relationships and can instead just focus on maintaining a cryptocurrency wallet.

Personal Security Remember to will not enable sensationalist media reporting set you off from going to Indonesia. For travelers Indonesia is as safe as other international locations. As things are right now, sadly, any public place in the world could be - the mistaken location at the improper time. To stay away from becoming the target of petty crime, just never demonstrate off expensive customer electronics, cameras or jewelry in general public. I have been checking out Indonesia, and other areas of South East Asia because the mid seventies, and I have in no way had a dilemma with theft or bag snatching. Indeed it can occur, so be mindful, but do not get paranoid about it. Will not turn out to be a digital traveler in your own lounge area, obtaining second hand encounters by seeing vacation shows on tv - get out there and encounter the magic 1st hand. Packing Checklist Get a packet of zip-lock luggage at the nearest supermarket. They are important if you like snacking, and you want to preserve ants and cockroaches out of your room/mattress/backpack. I always have heaps of them with me Consider rest room paper, and cleaning soap, as these are NOT offered in funds accommodation. Rather of carrying soap and hair shampoo, I are likely to use shower gel which is also Okay to clean your hair with. With electronic cameras often getting extremely specific batteries, don't fail to remember the charger which arrived with your digital camera Consider a torch (flash light), as energy interruptions are not abnormal. Also footpath, if they exist, are infamous for getting uneven, and typically obtaining huge holes in them. So if you wander around after dim, and you don't want to end up breaking some bones, get a single with you. Just take a few of sarongs, as very usually beds only have a base sheet, and you may well like to protect up during the night. Mosquito coils, or spray, and/or individual insect repellent is anything you should certainly not neglect. Keep in mind to have bottled water in your space, you can NOT consume the tap water. I use tap h2o to brush my tooth, but if you have a sensitive belly, I would advise that you use bottled h2o for that as effectively. before Ideally the earlier mentioned suggestions assist you in obtaining a wonderful time in Indonesia. Just 1 other thing - if at all attainable bring rechargeable batteries and an acceptable charger, or a spare battery and charger for your specific digital camera. There is no protected means of disposing of used batteries in this place, which produces environmental and health hazards. Come on more than and have a look around, but be warned going to Indonesia is a well being hazard - it really is addictive!

Timor Leste
Departure The departure side of the airport is much nicer than the arrival side. There is no need to pay anything extra at the airport. Security checks and exit immigration are fairly painless. The departure area has a small duty free shop, a bar, a cafe and a waiting area with plenty of basic seating available.Timor Leste gets very few visitors in comparison to its far larger and more popular neighbours Australia and Indonesia. As a consequence there is little reasonably up to date information available on visiting Timor Leste. Hopefully this information will be of use to someone considering going there. The trip was in the middle of October 2017. All prices are in USD.
The people in Timor Leste are generally pretty friendly. Tetum in the main local language, which has some Portuguese influence. English is spoken by a few people – knowing some Portuguese or bahasa Indonesia (which has a lot in common with Malay) can make communication easier. The main reaction from people was curiosity – unlike, say Bali, you’re quite likely to stand out.
Arrival
The airport is the smallest international airport I’ve ever experienced. Don’t expect air bridges or any stairs. Visas on arrival, if required, can be obtained for $30 at a small counter before reaching the main immigration room. Past immigration there’s a small baggage area, when you exit this you are outside the terminal building. The exterior of the airport has a few ATMs available and there is an adjacent Burger King. There are so few flights that taxis may out number those requiring one to get into Dili for the quoted $10 fare.
Citlink could be a better option if travelling from Bali because they other two airlines on the route are the same company and while I was there they were cancelling the earlier flight and flying the afternoon one only.
Dili
The city is small and pretty flat, with the mountains rising rapidly on the southern edge with the sea to the north. The setting between the mountains and the sea can be beautiful at times. I found the city to be pretty walkable with manageable traffic and predominately intact pavements. The few sights - seafront (a string of beaches with most official buildings along the coast road), cathedral, government buildings, colonial buildings, the Resistance museum (covers the independence conflict) and the Chega museum (in a former prison, covers the abuses that took place before and during the Indonesian occupation) are within a few km of one another.
It felt pretty safe in Dili. Walking around in the daytime alone was fine – you’re generally left to your own devices besides kids saying ‘mister’ and the occasional taxi driver looking for a fare. At night I stayed within in the vicinity of where I was staying with no problems. Taxis are very hard to find in Dili at night and no public transport runs into the late evenings.
Overlooking Dili on the coast to the east is a large statue of Jesus on a hill. I found the 7km cycle ride to there pretty pleasant once the traffic in the middle of Dili was passed. Besides the view from the hill with Jesus there’s a string of beaches with restaurants and places to stay overlooking Dili. On the other side of the Jesus hill there’s another, more isolated beach which would be beautiful if it wasn’t for the substantial amount of discarded / washed up plastic.
Shops
There are supermarkets, a few small malls and quite a some other smaller shops around. In the supermarkets the price of anything that has to be imported can be quite high – particularly dairy products. Outside Dili the country is predominantly rural and the country is not wealthy, so there is not much demand from Timorese for products bought more by foreigners. The smaller food shops can be cheaper than the supermarkets.
Dili has a small market, Tais, which sells locally made products.
Restaurants
Dili has quite a few coffee places (besides oil and gas the main export is coffee) with espresso starting at $1.50. There are some more basic local restaurants, but I didn’t eat in any of them. In the more westernised restaurants meals were typically in the $5 to $12 range with beer around $3 to $6. In general I found the food to be pretty good with sizeable portions. A lot of the restaurants are in places along the seafront, with cafes tending to be more inland. In terms of chain restaurants – there’s one Burger King and one Gloria Jean’s coffee in central Dili.
Diving
The main reason I came to Timor Leste. I dived with Dive Timor Lorosae which is located on the coast road just to the west of the centre of Dili. I also stayed there which cost $20 for a room in a dorm, which was effectively an apartment with a kitchen, wifi and a large TV (really nice place, clean, comfortable). If you stay there you get a 10% discount on your dives. There’s a supermarket with an ATM and several restaurants near by (including Castaway which is above the place in the front). Cash payment can be preferable because of the 5% card charge.
The rental equipment was in a pretty good state and everything was organised while being relaxed. On the longer dive trips which involve driving outside Dili (or on a boat to Atauro island) lunch is provided. Snack and drinks are also provided. They will organise some dives for just one person, but others have a minimum number of people.
In terms of how it was – wow! It was an incredible experience. I originally booked to do 6 dives over three days and ended up doing another 5. Sea horses, rays, beautiful coral and thousands of other fish. The diversity was pretty incredible. Every dive left me with a large smile on my face.
Here are a few of the hundreds of pictures I took while diving here -
Other
ANZ ATMs charged $7 per withdrawal with a $500 limit with the highest denomination note $20.
Other than to reach dive sites I did not explore much outside Dili. The road to the west of Dili towards the Indonesian border was in a pretty good condition. The road east of Dili along the coast will be in a good condition – when it is finished. From speaking to people the roads in the interior are very bad, with 4WD highly recommended, with some roads impassible in the wet season.
Public transport in Dili consisted of microlets on various routes with I think 12 heading out as far as Jesus. Public transport beyond Dili – from speaking to people having your own transportation would be far better.
Timor Leste has one ferry that links Dili with the enclave of Oecusse (domestic flights from Dili also exist) and Atauro on different days. To get to Atauro private transfers can be arranged for $45. There is also another boat available from the port I Dili which I heard cost $10.
Tours are one option to get out of Dili. I went to Eco discovery and they quoted me $250 for a one day trip to Tatamailau (the highest mountain in Timor Leste) and $450 for two days. These prices are per car, so if you go as a group the price per person would be considerably lower.
Departure
The departure side of the airport is much nicer than the arrival side. There is no need to pay anything extra at the airport. Security checks and exit immigration are fairly painless. The departure area has a small duty free shop, a bar, a cafe and a waiting area with plenty of basic seating available.
Overall
I really enjoyed being in Timor Leste. The relative lack of visitors, sights and tourist infrastructure made for a pretty relaxing experience. If I’d had more time it would have been good to have seen more outside of Dili. I could quite happily return to go diving again.
