The Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) is named for its coloring—the silvery frosted tips of its fur looks like ice has formed on it. The holotype (the single physical example of a species used when it is first described) for this species was collected in Pennsylvania in 1796 by an individual identified as “Master Pancake”.

The Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) is a brown bat with long almost rabbit-like ears over an inch in length Close relatives of this bat include other big-eared bat species like the Virginia Big-eared Bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus). Unlike other North American bat species, this species appears to be unaffected by White Nose Syndrome (a fungal disease in bats caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans), for reasons as yet unknown to science. The naturalist for which this species was named, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz, was interested in such wide-ranging fields as anthropology and geology in addition to biology and zoology.. He also proposed a theory of evolution before Charles Darwin, and was one of the first to use the term in the context of the creation of new species in biological terms.

i just saw this post that orientation and gender are like taxonomy and YEAH. i dont think this is the same train of thoughts but like yeah thats totally what its like. like pan and bi prople are both mspec but theyre not the same! the egyptian fruit bat and the mayalsian flying fox are both fruit bats, but theyre different species! some bats have subspecies! the townsend big eared bat is Corynorhinus townsendii, but the ozark big eared bat and the virgina big eared bat are Corynorhinus townsendii ingens and Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus. two people could be nonbinary, but one is also batgender. my point is you cant just generalize every queer persons identity, just like you can generalize every bat species. eachone is different, even down to the individual bat. bats have different tones for each bat they talk to. humans are all different people

🦇 Bat Fact! Do you know of the Virginia Big-eared Bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus)? This bat, while small in size (5-13g), is large in the ear department! This bat’s ears compose 1/3 of their body; they roll down across their back during flight, giving this bat the nickname “Ram Eared Bat.” Found in patches from West Virginia to North Carolina, you can find these bats in montane forests and oak-hickory forests, roosting in caves, abandoned mines, human structures etc. These bats are not adept at crawling, so they require high ceilings where they roost. This bat’s diet is composed almost entirely of moths - this specialization aiding the success of the species - but they also eat flies and beetles. They are listed as endangered under the USFWS Endangered species Act 🦇
