Hundreds of primarily young people braved the bitter cold to assemble beside a riverside in the capital on Sunday evening for a vigil for the victims of a horrific apartment fire in northwest China's Xinjiang region. The event quickly degenerated into calls to halt zero-Covid. People have rushed to university campuses in all of China's major cities and turned to the streets in major cities in a wave of protests not seen since pro-democracy rallies in 1989 were put down.
