"The Food and Drug Administration approved new mRNA coronavirus vaccines Thursday [August 22, 2024], clearing the way for shots manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna to start hitting pharmacy shelves and doctor’s offices within a week.
Health officials encourage annual vaccination against the coronavirus, similar to yearly flu shots. Everyone 6 months and older should receive a new vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends.
The FDA has yet to approve an updated vaccine from Novavax, which uses a more conventional vaccine development method but has faced financial challenges.
Our scientific understanding of coronavirus vaccines has evolved since they debuted in late 2020. Here’s what to know about the new vaccines.
Why are there new vaccines?
The coronavirus keeps evolving to overcome our immune defenses, and the shield offered by vaccines weakens over time. That’s why federal health officials want people to get an annual updated coronavirus vaccine designed to target the latest variants. They approve them for release in late summer or early fall to coincide with flu shots that Americans are already used to getting.
The underlying vaccine technology and manufacturing process are the same, but components change to account for how the virus morphs. The new vaccines target the KP.2 variant because most recent covid cases are caused by that strain or closely related ones...
Do the vaccines prevent infection?
You probably know by now that vaccinated people can still get covid. But the shots do offer some protection against infection, just not the kind of protection you get from highly effective vaccines for other diseases such as measles.
The 2023-2024 vaccine provided 54 percent increased protection against symptomatic covid infections, according to a CDC study of people who tested for the coronavirus at pharmacies during the first four months after that year’s shot was released...
A nasal vaccine could be better at stopping infections outright by increasing immunity where they take hold, and one is being studied in a trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
If you really want to dodge covid, don’t rely on the vaccine alone and take other precautions such as masking or avoiding crowds...
Do the vaccines help prevent transmission?
You may remember from early coverage of coronavirus vaccines that it was unclear whether shots would reduce transmission. Now, scientists say the answer is yes — even if you’re actively shedding virus.
That’s because the vaccine creates antibodies that reduce the amount of virus entering your cells, limiting how much the virus can replicate and make you even sicker. When vaccination prevents symptoms such as coughing and sneezing, people expel fewer respiratory droplets carrying the virus. When it reduces the viral load in an infected person, people become less contagious.
That’s why Peter Hotez, a physician and co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, said he feels more comfortable in a crowded medical conference, where attendees are probably up to date on their vaccines, than in a crowded airport.
“By having so many vaccinated people, it’s decreasing the number of days you are shedding virus if you get a breakthrough infection, and it decreases the amount of virus you are shedding,” Hotez said.
Do vaccines prevent long covid?
While the threat of acute serious respiratory covid disease has faded, developing the lingering symptoms of “long covid” remains a concern for people who have had even mild cases. The CDC says vaccination is the “best available tool” to reduce the risk of long covid in children and adults. The exact mechanism is unclear, but experts theorize that vaccines help by reducing the severity of illness, which is a major risk factor for long covid.
When is the best time to get a new coronavirus vaccine?
It depends on your circumstances, including risk factors for severe disease, when you were last infected or vaccinated, and plans for the months ahead. It’s best to talk these issues through with a doctor.
If you are at high risk and have not recently been vaccinated or infected, you may want to get a shot as soon as possible while cases remain high. The summer wave has shown signs of peaking, but cases can still be elevated and take weeks to return to low levels. It’s hard to predict when a winter wave will begin....
Where do I find vaccines?
CVS said its expects to start administering them within days, and Walgreens said that it would start scheduling appointments to receive shots after Sept. 6 and that customers can walk in before then.
Availability at doctor’s offices might take longer. Finding shots for infants and toddlers could be more difficult because many pharmacies do not administer them and not every pediatrician’s office will stock them given low demand and limited storage space.
This year’s updated coronavirus vaccines are supposed to have a longer shelf life, which eases the financial pressures of stocking them.
The CDC plans to relaunch its vaccine locator when the new vaccines are widely available, and similar services are offered by Moderna and Pfizer."

"High" coronavirus wastewater levels are still being detected in three U.S. states, despite "low" levels nationwide.
Based on the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Newsweek has mapped out this variability to reveal where high coronavirus levels in wastewater still persist.
After a surge in COVID-19 cases this summer, infection rates seem to be on the decline. As of October 19, positive results account for only 5.6 percent of all tests, excluding at-home testing, in the U.S., down 0.6 percent from the previous week.
As of October 24, the overall viral activity level in wastewater across the country has been classified as "low" by the CDC, with the highest wastewater levels concentrated in the West.
New Mexico and Wyoming are still detecting "high" virus activity, along with New Hampshire on the East Coast. "Moderate" levels have been reported in 14 states, and "low" levels are now detected in 20 states, with 13 reporting "minimal" detection levels, the lowest classification in the CDC's system.
(Follow the link to see the interactive map!)
Viral levels in wastewater are a helpful indicator of disease prevalence within a population.
Recent spikes in COVID-19 cases have been largely driven by a new class of subvariants nicknamed FLiRT after the position of the mutations on the virus' spike proteins, the projections that allow them to enter our cells.
These proteins are also used as targets by immune systems and vaccinations, so changes in their structure can allow the virus to bypass the body's defenses more easily. However, existing vaccines are likely to provide at least some form of protection against more severe symptoms and long COVID-19.
As of October 26, the now-dominant subvariant, KP. 3.1.1, accounted for more than 57 percent of all U.S. COVID-19 cases over the previous two weeks, according to the CDC, with the new XEC variant accounting for 17 percent.
Despite changes in viral DNA, symptoms remain largely the same, according to the CDC:
Fever or chills Cough Shortness of breath Fatigue Muscle or body aches Headache Loss of taste or smell Sore throat Runny nose Nausea or vomiting Diarrhea
More vulnerable individuals may still be at risk of severe illness, so it is important to self-isolate if you receive a positive COVID-19 test.

COVID Propaganda Roundup: The latest updates on the “new normal” – chronicling the lies, distortions, and abuses by the ruling class.
Bill Gates and Albert Bourla (finally) face trial for COVID scam The only regrettable caveats here are that a.) this is a civil proceeding rather than criminal and that b.) even if it were the latter, the Netherlands, being a sacred liberal Democracy™, doesn’t enact the death penalty.
Via Children's Health Defense (emphasis added):
“A Netherlands court last week ruled that Bill Gates can stand trial in the Netherlands, in a case involving seven people injured by COVID-19 vaccines.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the seven “corona skeptics” sued Gates last year, along with former Dutch prime minister and newly appointed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and “several members” of the Dutch government’s COVID-19 “Outbreak Management Team.”
Other defendants include Albert Bourla, Ph.D., CEO of Pfizer, and the Dutch state.
“Because Bill Gates’ foundation was involved in combating the corona pandemic, he has also been summoned,” De Telegraaf reported.
According to Dutch independent news outlet Zebra Inspiratie, the plaintiffs allege that Gates, through his representatives, deliberately misled them about the safety of the COVID-19 shots, despite knowing “that these injections were not safe and effective.”
Dutch independent journalist Erica Krikke told The Defender that the seven plaintiffs — whose names are redacted in the lawsuit’s publicly available documents — “are ordinary Dutch people, and they have been jabbed and after the jabs they got sick.””

FDA petitions court to toss out lawsuit requiring vaxx document disclosure Via Reuters (emphasis added):
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has asked a federal judge in Texas to throw out a public records lawsuit related to COVID-19 vaccines, arguing that it has already spent more than $3.5 million to produce more than 1 million documents in the case.
The FDA in a filing on Thursday defended the adequacy of the records it provided in the lawsuit, which was filed by scientists who wanted to see licensing information that the agency relied on to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.
The lawsuit, filed in late 2021, attracted widespread attention after the FDA said early on that it could take decades to process and disclose records* to Public Health and Medical Professionals for Transparency, the group that brought the case.
The public records lawsuit said that “the medical and scientific community and the public have a substantial interest in reviewing the data and information underlying the FDA’s approval of the Pfizer Vaccine.”
It said the requested data would help resolve questions about the FDA’s review process.
U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in an order in early 2022 set an accelerated time frame for the FDA, calling the group's Freedom of Information Act request an issue “of paramount public importance.”
The FDA declined to comment.
Aaron Siri, a lawyer for Public Health and Medical Professionals for Transparency, in a statement on Friday said the fight for records was not over.
“Despite years of litigation, and the Court’s order to produce all clinical trial documents, FDA continues to improperly withhold over a million pages of trial documents," Siri said.
The agency at one point was producing 55,000 pages of records every 30 days in response to court orders in the lawsuit. It said in Thursday's filing seeking to close the case that it set up “unprecedented and extraordinary operations” to comply with Pittman’s directives.”
*Isn’t it remarkable that, when it comes to rolling out an experimental and unprecedently lucrative drug and then figuring out the logistics to get it injected into the peasants’ arms by the hundreds of millions, the FDA, in fascistic collusion with the pharmaceutical industry, is capable of achieving the near-impossible feat — yet, when it’s instructed to simply release documents in the public interest, that’s somehow too much of a burden for a multi-billion-dollar agency.

Is social media useful spreading information of covid - 19 in Malaysia or home country?
Tumblr media
URL link : https://www.paho.org/en/topics/coronavirus-infections/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/social-media-cards-adolescents-and-covid
Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we access information, and it's more relevant than ever to explore the role of social media in this context. Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for spreading information related to COVID-19, and we're taking a closer look at its impact in Malaysia.
Social Media as an Information Dissemination Tool
Tumblr media
URL Link : https://www.wheninmanila.com/ol-access-social-media-as-a-tool-for-information-dissemination/
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become primary sources of news and information for many people. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of these platforms has skyrocketed. People turn to social media to get updates on the latest statistics, guidelines, and news related to the virus.
The Benefits
Rapid Dissemination: Social media allows for the rapid sharing of information. Health authorities and government agencies can quickly update the public about new developments and safety measures.
Global Connectivity: It facilitates global connectivity. Information about COVID-19 in one country can easily reach a worldwide audience. This has allowed for the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and solidarity.
User-Generated Content: Social media empowers users to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas. This can foster a sense of community and shared responsibility in the fight against the virus.
The Challenges
Misinformation: The rapid spread of information on social media can lead to the dissemination of false or misleading information. This can be dangerous during a public health crisis.
Information Overload: The abundance of information can be overwhelming, making it difficult for individuals to discern credible sources from unverified ones.
Social Media's Role in Malaysia
Malaysia, like many other countries, has seen both positive and negative effects of social media in disseminating COVID-19 information.
Positive Aspects
Government Engagement: The Malaysian government has actively used social media to engage with the public. Regular updates from the Ministry of Health and Prime Minister's Office have helped keep the population informed.
Community Support: Malaysians have used social media to organize community support groups, share resources, and provide emotional support to those affected by the pandemic.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Social media has been a crucial tool in promoting public awareness campaigns. Information on mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination drives has been shared extensively.
Challenges in Malaysia
Misinformation: Malaysia has also faced issues with the spread of misinformation. Rumors and unverified claims have caused confusion and anxiety. Addressing this challenge is an ongoing effort, with government agencies and organizations working to provide accurate information.
Language Barriers: Malaysia is a multicultural and multilingual country, and not all COVID-19 information is accessible to everyone due to language barriers. Translation efforts and multilingual content creation are vital to reach all segments of the population.
Community Initiatives
One remarkable aspect of Malaysia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been the emergence of community-driven initiatives on social media.
Volunteer Networks: Numerous volunteer networks have formed through social media platforms. These volunteers assist with tasks such as food delivery, providing information to those in need, and supporting healthcare workers.
Resource Sharing: Malaysians have taken to social media to share information about where to find essential supplies, provide emotional support, and offer guidance on COVID-19 testing and vaccination centers.
Mental Health Support: Recognizing the emotional toll of the pandemic, individuals and organizations have used social media to provide mental health resources, helplines, and online support groups.
Conclusion
Social media has played a significant role in spreading information on COVID-19, both in Malaysia and around the world. While it offers rapid dissemination and global connectivity, it also poses challenges related to misinformation and information overload. To navigate this digital landscape effectively, it is crucial for individuals to critically assess the information they encounter, and for governments and organizations to utilize social media responsibly as a tool for public communication during such crises.

Simplify Your Immunization Schedule: Quick, Hassle-Free Vaccinations
Immunizations are an important part of protecting your health and that of your family. But with a complex and ever-changing schedule of required shots, it can be difficult to keep up with the latest recommendations. Fortunately, Hillsboro Urgent Care can help simplify your immunization schedule and ensure you and your family are protected against preventable illnesses.
Tumblr media

That’s why we’re proud to offer a comprehensive range of routine vaccinations, including pneumonia, influenza, hepatitis, shingles, and more. We’ll help you and your family stay up to date with the recommended immunization schedule, ensuring that you’re protected against serious illnesses.
Benefits of Vaccinations
Vaccines are incredibly effective at preventing illness. By getting vaccinated, you’ll reduce your risk of contracting preventable diseases. In addition, vaccines can reduce the severity of illnesses if you do become ill. Vaccinations are also an important way of protecting vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children, from serious illness.
Get the Most Important Vaccines This Cold and Flu Season
In an ideal scenario, everyone would get all the recommended vaccines to ensure maximum protection against prevalent diseases. However, if for any reason you are unable to get all of them, it's crucial to prioritize and receive the most important vaccinations during the cold and flu season. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is at the forefront of these. Every year, the flu vaccine is updated to protect against the strains that are predicted to be most common during the upcoming season. This becomes particularly essential for high-risk groups like the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Additionally, with the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, getting vaccinated against the coronavirus, if you haven't already, should be of utmost priority. These vaccines have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
Finally, individuals who struggle with respiratory diseases may consider getting the pneumonia vaccine. Consult with a healthcare professional at Hillsboro Urgent Care to understand which vaccines are the most pertinent for you, considering your age, health conditions, and other risk factors.
Our Range of Services
At Hillsboro Urgent Care, we provide a comprehensive range of urgent care services, from vaccinations to lab tests and medical weight loss. Three Shots for Fall: What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
Most Americans have had one or more shots of the flu and Covid vaccines. New this year are the first shots to protect older adults and infants from respiratory syncytial virus, a lesser-known threat whose toll in hospitalizations and deaths may rival that of the flu. Federal health officials are hoping that widespread adoption of these immunizations will head off another “tripledemic” of respiratory illnesses, like the one seen last winter. For people with insurance, all of the vaccines should be available at no cost. “This is an embarrassment of riches,” said Dr. Ofer Levy, director of the precision vaccines program at Boston Children’s Hospital and an adviser to the Food and Drug Administration. Here’s what he and other experts say about who should receive which immunizations, and when.
What respiratory illnesses are coming our way?
The coronavirus, the flu and R.S.V. are all likely to send thousands of Americans to the hospital this year, but exactly when, and how severe the toll will be, is unknown. That’s in part because the restrictions in place during the pandemic altered the seasonal patterns of the viruses. Last winter, the flu peaked in December instead of in February, as it typically does. Covid kept up a steady number of infections and deaths most of the season, with a peak in January. Compared with its pattern before the pandemic, R.S.V. peaked several weeks earlier last year, and it circulated for longer than usual. But this year, it is now beginning to pick up in the South, suggesting that the virus may return to its prepandemic patterns. R.S.V. is the least familiar of the three viruses, but increasingly it is recognized as a major respiratory threat, particularly to older adults, immunocompromised people and young children. “R.S.V. has a burden of disease similar to flu in older adults — it can make you very, very sick,” said Dr. Helen Chu, a physician and immunologist at the University of Washington.
Which vaccines should I seek out?
Everyone should have at least the flu and Covid shots this fall, experts said. The annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older, but is most important for adults ages 65 and older, children under 5, and people with weak immune systems. Updated Covid shots from Pfizer and Moderna are now endorsed by the F.D.A. and the C.D.C. (A third, from Novavax, is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.) The recommendations: Americans aged 5 and older may receive one dose, at least 2 months after their last dose of any Covid vaccine. Children aged 6 months through 4 years who have already been vaccinated may receive one, or two, doses of the new vaccines. The timing and number of doses depends on the previous vaccine received. Unvaccinated children aged 6 months through 4 years may receive three doses of the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine or two doses of the new Moderna vaccine. Federal health officials aren’t talking about a primary series of shots followed by boosters. (Officials aren’t even calling the shots “boosters” anymore.) Instead, they are trying to steer Americans toward the idea of a single annual immunization with the latest version of the vaccine. “Like a seatbelt in a car, it’s a good idea to keep using it,” Dr. Camille Kotton, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and an adviser to the C.D.C., said of the Covid vaccine.
What about R.S.V.?
Two vaccines are now available for adults aged 60 and older: Abrysvo, by Pfizer, and Arexvy, by GSK. They are not universally recommended; patients may choose to get them in consultation with their doctors. The vaccines, which may have rare but serious side effects, are mostly likely to benefit older people with such underlying conditions as heart disease and asthma. Abrysvo and Arexvy are not yet approved for most Americans younger than 60. The C.D.C. now recommends another new shot against R.S.V. — Beyfortus, a monoclonal antibody — to protect infants less than 8 months old, as well as infants 8 months to 19 months old if they are at risk for severe illness. In August, the F.D.A. approved Abrysvo for pregnant women as a way to protect infants from the virus. The vaccine, to be given in the last weeks of pregnancy, may prevent severe respiratory illness in infants up to 6 months. While risks posed by any of these respiratory viruses increase with age, remember that “65 is not a magical cutoff point,” Dr. Chu said. “Even those with no pre-existing conditions can become quite sick with all three of these viruses.”
When should I get the vaccines?
You should get the shots early enough to build immunity against the pathogens, but the timing may depend on your particular circumstances. If you do not want or are unable to make multiple trips to a clinic or pharmacy to space the shots apart, experts recommend getting the shots together. But if at all possible, it may be wise to time the shots to provide maximum protection. Covid is already on the rise, so getting that shot as soon as possible makes sense. Flu may not peak until December, so getting the flu vaccine in October may be wisest — your antibodies will not have waned so much by the time the virus comes most prevalent. Adults aged 50 and older should also get the vaccine for shingles, if they haven’t already, and those 65 and older should sign up for the pneumococcal vaccine. But those vaccines don’t need to be given in the fall and can be scheduled for different times, Dr. Chu said.
Is it safe to get these vaccines all at once?
Getting the Covid and flu shots all at once does not significantly affect the protection or produce worse side effects compared with getting either one alone, according to a recent study by Israeli scientists. “F.D.A. and C.D.C. systems monitor vaccine safety year round and will remain in place,” the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement to The Times. “If any new potential safety signals are identified, the F.D.A. and C.D.C. will conduct further assessment and inform the public.” Some research suggests that the R.S.V. and flu vaccines produce lower levels of antibodies when given together than when delivered one at a time. But those levels are probably still high enough to protect people from the viruses, experts said. Because the R.S.V. vaccine is new, however, there is little information on how it might interact with the other two vaccines. There is also limited data on the safety of the two R.S.V. vaccines. Clinical trials recorded six cases of neurological problems, including Guillain-Barré syndrome, compared with none in the placebo groups. But the numbers were too small to determine whether the cases were a result of the inoculations. More clarity will come from surveillance while the vaccines are administered on a large scale, Dr. Chu said. Christina Jewett contributed reporting. Read the full article

One of the simplest things you can do to protect your health is to keep track of indoor air quality. Viruses spread through the air and accumulate in spaces that are poorly ventilated. By opening a window or running on an air purifier you can reduce your risks of catching an airborne virus. While viruses spread most during the winter, some viral illnesses like COVID are present all year round, and can cause serious short and long-term health issues. This post explains how monitoring and improving indoor air quality can help protect your health through all the seasons.
Viruses can spread through the air at long distances Viruses spread through droplets and smaller particles called aerosols that are expelled by someone who has an infection. This can happen in a number of ways including coughing, sneezing, talking, or simply breathing. The highest risk of catching a virus is when you are close to the source, where there is a greater concentration of droplets and aerosols.
Viruses can also infect people from larger distances because viruses trapped in aerosols can linger in the air for hours, like cigarette smoke. When a room is poorly ventilated, aerosols accumulate, increasing your risk of catching the virus and getting sick, even if you are not standing close to someone who is infected.

COVID spreads throughout the year Many respiratory virus illnesses like the flu spread predominantly during winter, because they can survive longer in cold and dry conditions, and because people are more likely to gather inside in poorly ventilated rooms during the colder months.
However, COVID can surge throughout the year. COVID peaks occur regularly because the coronavirus that causes COVID is extremely contagious; new variants can emerge quickly; and immunity from previous infections and vaccinations decreases over time. COVID usually surges in winter and summer, however the virus can circulate at high levels at any point during the year.
COVID still causes serious illness While things are different than in 2020 when COVID first appeared, COVID hasn’t gone away. In many countries, COVID is still the most deadly infectious disease. And COVID infections continue to cause long-term health issues for many people.
Anyone who gets COVID can develop Long COVID. Although people with severe initial infections are most likely to develop Long COVID, you can get Long COVID even after a mild initial infection.
Because coronaviruses mutate quickly, you can be reinfected with another variant as early as several weeks after you have gotten COVID. Reinfections can occur multiple times, and the more reinfections you have increases your risk of developing long-term health issues.
People with Long COVID can experience a wide variety of symptoms that can last weeks, months, or years after the initial infection. COVID can increase the risk of developing new conditions or worsen pre-existing ones including heart disease, diabetes, blood clots, neurological conditions, and chronic fatigue.
Even being sick with COVID in the short term is disruptive because most people are infectious with COVID for at least 10 days. That can mean missing days of work, family time, or an important social event.
Simple things you can do to avoid COVID The best way of reducing your risk of developing long-term health issues from COVID is by taking a few simple steps to prevent getting COVID in the first place.
Staying up to date with the latest COVID vaccine reduces your risk of serious illness, infection, and Long COVID. Wearing a mask helps boost your own protection, protects others around you, and works against any COVID variant or other type of airborne virus.
Another effective way to reduce your risk of getting sick from airborne viruses is to improve indoor air quality.
Tracking air quality can help reduce your risk of sickness You can track air quality with a carbon dioxide monitor. When we breathe, we expel carbon dioxide molecules, which accumulate in rooms that are poorly ventilated. A high carbon dioxide reading means that you are likely breathing in a large percentage of recirculated air. If that air contains viruses, that puts you at greater risk of getting sick.
With this knowledge you can take steps to reduce your risk. This can be as easy as opening a window to allow particles with viruses to escape and fresh air to come in. If opening a window isn’t possible, HEPA purifiers or Far-UVC Light systems can help remove particles with viruses from the air.
