I am nervously charging up my cordless impact driver and electric screwdriver.
My Dad uses a Drive medical recliner, you see. It’s the only thing he can safely sit/sleep in because of his weight and mobility issues.
But the recliner mechanism breaks after enough heavy use. And Dad is probably the world champion of “heavy use.” And the joy of living out here is that a lot of this stuff, and the services, just aren’t available.
The first two times, I was able to replace the chairs outright. I put the broken ones aside to either scavenge for parts/see if I could get them repaired.
But the third one broke early. As in, we haven’t finished paying off the credit card charges for the goddamn thing yet. And of course, the exact same part broke each time, so forget swapping out.
I got one of the chairs semi-working. And then began searching again.
And found a place that sold all the parts of the chair. That would ship out here, for a reasonable fee. (By comparison, if I order the chair with “free delivery,” the one company that will ship it will charge an extra $500, half the cost of the chair.)
So I have the full replacement mechanism, and am going to attempt to swap it out. And while it’s far from the first time I’ve been under the damn thing screwing it back together...it’s a major repair, y’know? Every what-if nightmare failure is dancing around in my head taunting me.
Wish me luck, please. I’m terrified that I’m about to fuck everything up.

Good evening – do you have any recommendations for a good brand of cordless power drill?
hey riva!! of course! keep in mind that my advice is going to be informed by my experience in the trade of electrical work rather than dedicated carpentry or framing or anything of that somewhat more relevant wheelhouse.
the first thing to take into account is what you plan to do with your power drill. are you going into a trade? are you just working on home improvement, or DIY projects? this will inform the kind of power you need in a tool. trying to go for max torque and RPM might be overkill if you're, say, building shelves. but likewise a mere 12v system might not match up to the task of like, drilling out several layers of studs or thick metal.
another thing to consider is whether you're looking for a straight up drill, or an impact driver. an impact driver is similar to a drill in that it is a handheld tool that uses a motor to spin a bit. but an impact driver has an internal anvil system that detects resistance and applies torque to countersink the driven device (typically a screw). so while you may use a drill with a drill bit to bore out a hole in wood, if you're putting screws in wood you're likely better off with an impact driver that can properly seat the screw with its superior driving capabilities. because they have complimentary uses, many retailers sell impact drivers and drills together in a set. i highly recommend this if you can swing it, it will set you up to be able to complete most any DIY or professional project vis-a-vis drilling and screwing.

i don't have particularly much brand loyalty, but i will say that i own a milwaukee m12 fuel impact/drill set, and for the most part it has held up. the m12 series (as in 12v set) is plenty strong for a hobbyist, however in my professional setting the drill has been lacking.
see, the m12 impact driver is capable of some decent torque and RPMs, nearly on par with its larger m18 counterpart. i have yet to find a task that my m12 impact lacked the torque to accomplish. however, the m12 drill hasn't held up to more demanding tasks. while it drills out electrical boxes and other small tasks just great, i doubt i could spend all day drilling out studs without breaking the damn thing. in this manner, a larger voltage drill would be essential for professional work. the only sheer advantage m12 has over m18 is their more compact frames allow them to be used in tighter environments with ease, such as in attics. this is, however, a more professional concern and may not factor into DIY needs.

milwaukee tools are, however, pricey. (sales notwithstanding) the m12 set sits at $150-200, whereas the m18 set can be up to $400.
dewalt's 20v impact/drill set can currently be found at ~$150, and while i haven't personally owned the set, every dewalt hand drill that i've borrowed from a coworker has handled everything i've thrown at it.
either brand has a decent reputation for a reason, and their large selection of other cordless tools makes battery interchangeability a long-term non issue should you, say, want to invest in a cordless sawzall, circ saw, or even portaband down the line. nice and simple!
bottom line, if you can get a stronger/higher voltage set on sale (now is the time of year for that!), absolutely go for it. but the m12 or other voltage-comparable sets will do just fine for hobbyists/around-the-house work.
if you're just looking for a drill, no impact whatsoever, you can find any of the drills in these sets on their own. however, i strongly recommend the use of an impact driver to anyone considering projects that need screws, whether that's building cabinets or anchoring a shelf to a concrete garage wall. you'll save money in the long run by getting the impact driver now instead of going back for it and having bought each separately.

I am often amazed at the ability of people to wildly misunderstand things.
So, last month my father gave me some cordless power tools. (I had long been resistant because cordless tools in the 80s and 90s were underpowered, expensive, and didn’t work for long).
Now, the thing I noticed is that the drill and impact driver he gave me - Metabo brand - look almost completely identical to all the other similar drills and impact drivers on the market. Not “yes, of course, a drill looks like a drill” but to the extent that if you put them all in a row, covered over the logos, and took a picture in black and white, you’d say they were all the same item. And I’m not alone in noticing this - I came across an article the other day observing it as well, and comparing to benchtop sanders which are also nearly identical. The article didn’t speculate on why but rather was putting forth that brands needed to do more to distinguish themselves lest consumers conclude that brands are meaningless.
Now, my guess is, they’re all being made at the same factory. This happens a lot, you know? Pretty much all laptops are manufactured at the same place, something like 80% of all ballpoint pens use parts made in one small country in Europe, etc. Our supply chain is NOT resilient, and we are often reliant on just one manufacturer.
The other possibility is, there was a significant development which resulted in everyone making the same design. For example, have you notice in the last decade suddenly all over the USA these 4-and-1 condo and apartment buildings started popping up like mushrooms? Turns out this one civil engineer was reading over some building code while on vacation, and realized it would be legal to use pressure-treated lumber instead of metal and concrete, to build apartment buildings so long as they weren’t too tall and had sprinkler systems. This being waaaaay cheaper, that design became wildly popular.
The thing is, figuring out what is going on is not entirely easy. There’s no trade magazine which publishes “And today we’re going to start making identical impact drivers!” or anything like that. Every brand wants to maintain the fiction that their products are Unique and Special rather than being indistinguishable their competitors. They also like to conceal the details of their supply chain - to the extent possible they want to claim it’s all made locally, or “finely crafted German engineering”. So you’ll very seldom find a brand stating outright “Yeah, we buy these from manufacturing plant in Indonesia, they slap our logo and custom ABS mold on the outside, nah, we don’t make them ourselves”.
So, having some vague ideas on what’s going on but not having the ability to run this question to ground, I put the question forth in the hopes that someone else might know:
“Many cordless drills and impact drivers on the market right now look almost identical. Are they all made in the same factory, or using identical parts?“
What I have thus far received is one reply informing me that I’m a complete idiot for thinking that cordless drills and impact drivers look the same because they are entirely different tools which have nothing whatsoever in common. (They are, in fact, very similar both in appearance and function, and it takes closer inspection to tell which is which in almost all cases). And a second response telling me that of course an impact driver and a drill from the same brand will look the same, that’s totally normal.
Neither response seems to have grasped anything relevant about the question. And while I can see how I might have worded it a little differently, I’m honestly frustrated because it just feels like it doesn’t matter how I phrase it, they’re simply not grasping that there’s a question to be asked there and will persistently give answers that don’t apply.
