airsLLide No. 830: 5B-DAR, Airbus A310-203, Cyprus Airways, Geneva, March 7, 1987.
With the delivery of its first Airbus A310s in spring 1984, Cyprus Airways started a fleet renewal that would turn it into a pure Airbus user, with first the A310 replacing the early Boeing 707-100B models used by the carrier, and later A320s replacing the Bac 1-11-500 single isle jets.
The arrival of the A310 also marked the launch of the blue and copper livery that replaced the earlier blue and orange brand. What remained untouched through all the livery changes and even one bankruptcy Cyprus Airways would go through to the present day is the airline's by now well-established logo of a winged mouflon, representing the species of wild goat living in Cyprus' Troodos mountains. Although it has been reduced to a sticker on the engine cowlings, with an olive branch taking up the mouflon's spot in the tailfin, it can still be found, unchanged in shape, on the Airbus Canada A220-300s (a.k.a. Bombardier CS300) Cyprus now flies:

Capital of the Landes Department, Mont-de-Marsan is a medieval bastide town where the Douze and Andou Rivers meet.
It was created in the beginning as a walled settlement in the 1100s, and some solid houses and scrap of old walls still exist from this point. For hundreds of years, Mont-de-Marsan flourished through trade, shipping Armagnac and other delicacies in the region from Midouze to the Atlantic. The riverside is still lined with stone warehouses and quays from this period. As a four-star star Ville Ville Fleurie steals Mont-de-Maran, located in greenery, abundant water, and secretly beautiful scenes, all of which have been charged in history. Discover the best things to do in Mont-de-Marsan.
[toc]
1. Donjon Lacataye
Infusing the townscape with medieval romance is this tall fortified tower. The name “Donjon” means “keep”, suggesting that this was part of a whole castle, but the building is actually two stand-alone fortified houses side by side.
From the Midou side, you’ll see that one has the slender windows of a Romanesque house, while the others’ are square, showing they were built at different times. The site was completed in the early 1500s and now houses the Despiau-Wlérick Sculpture Museum. On a visit, you can climb up for a view from the battlements.
2. Musée Despiau-Wlérick
Inside the Donjon Lacataye is the only French museum dedicated to modern figurative sculpture. It takes the names of Charles Despiau and Robert Wlérick, two sons of Mont-de-Marsan and both celebrated sculptors: Wlérick is famous for sculpting the monument to Marshal Foch at the Place du Trocadéro in Paris in 1936.
In all, there are more than 2,200 sculptures here, created between the late 19th and 1950s. Among them are three gilded copper reliefs made for the 1937 Paris Exhibition by Henri Lagriffoul and his works. by André Greck and Charles Correia.
3. Parc Animalier de Nahuques
In four hectares to the east of Mont-de-Marsan is a park that kids will be wild for: Shaded by giant oak trees are animal enclosures with mostly regional species like sheep, donkeys, dwarf goats, and deer.
These are joined by Corsican mouflons, emus, wallabies, black swans and more than 100 bird species at the aviary. There’s also a playground for the littlest children, pony rides for kids up to 10 and a clutch of stands in the park selling waffles, crêpes, and soft drinks.
4. Romanesque Fortified Houses
Nestled on a quiet backstage, Rue Maubec is a few buildings that return to the origins of Mont-de-Marsan. These edifices are in the same vein as the Donjon Lacataye, fortified houses that would have been attached to the city’s defensive walls.
At no. 6 is a house dating back to the late 1100s, listed as a historical site and with a stunningly mulled window. There are arrow loops in the front and if you look closely at the corbels there are openings from which rocks or hot oil could have been thrown on attackers.
There’s another 12th-century house at no. 24, less well-preserved but also meriting a couple of minutes.
5. Parc Jean-Rameau
On a loop in the Douze, the refined Parc de Rameau was opened in 1813 and has an interesting backstory. It started as a place to experiment with plants and plants from other parts of the world, but soon became a place to walk in style.
The maritime pine was cultivated here, which helped to drain the Landes marshes and provide a buffer against the dunes on the coast.
The park is as calm and dignified as ever, with a cast-iron bandstand from 1907, a fern garden, Japanese garden and hydrangea flowerbeds, all sheltered by beeches, limes, and pines.
6. Sights around Town
Mont-de-Marsan has many small places to suit a walking tour, many places with fascinating stories to tell. The Neoclassical Rotunda on Boulevard de Candau was built by the French Académie d’Agriculture in 1811 and was meant to be a plant nursery, but the plans were abandoned.
Just after the confluence of the Douze and Midou is the site of a once-thriving river-port transporting Armagnac, wheat, honey and more down to Bayonne up to the start of the 20th century.
Warehouses, docks, and the towpath are small hints of an activity that went back to the 1100s. And on 46 rue Armand-Dulamon is a beautiful 18th-century castle with mansard roofs and exquisite decorations above the first-floor windows.
7. Base de Loisirs du Marsan
Just off the Route de Bayonne to the southwest of Mont-de-Marsan is the town’s place to blow off steam on hot days. In this 120-hectare outdoor space, there’s a bathing lake and beach, a large fishing pond as well as facilities and equipment for any number of outdoor pursuits.
Bring youngsters to the Accrobranche Centre, which is a kind of climbing attraction with 16 courses set high in the park’s tall pines and a 700-meter zip-line that passes right above the bathing lake.
If you don’t have a car you can use the free shuttle bus that serves the park from the center of town in the summer.
8. Musée du 34e Régiment d’Infanterie
The French Army’s 34th infantry regiment moved to Mont-de-Marsan from Tarbes in 1876 and was headquartered in the Bosquet Barracks. Here, the Pavillon Solférino is a former guardhouse for the barracks, containing artifacts that will delight anyone with a taste for military regalia.
Has flags, uniforms, and badges as well as photo storage of strange training manipulations. The museum also goes into depth about certain characters, like the Abbé Bordes, a volunteer chaplain who won the Croix de Guerre and Légion d’Honneur in the First World War.
9. Lavoirs
Yet more traces of the past can be discovered at the six communal washhouses dotted around the town. Unlike in most French cities, these have been preserved and are little souvenirs of a not so distant era.
The loveliest of all is the Lavoir de la Cale de l’Abreuvoir, which is from 1870 and set down where the Andou and Douze Rivers meet. It has a large semicircular building with ten arches currently decorated with geraniums.
Pause a moment to watch the river go by and get a photo of the rustic old mill on the opposite bank.
10. Ramparts
Walking around Mont-de-Marsan you get a sense of how useful the Douze and Andou Rivers would have been for defense in medieval times. Their meanders create a natural barrier on the North, South and West sides of the town.
But on the unprotected east side of the old town, lots of fragments of the 12th-century defensive walls are visible. Some places to go for these are Rue Armand Dulamon, Promenade du 21 Août 1944 and the wall neighboring the Donjon Lacataye.
There are four rectangular towers to see, and in places, the walls get up to a height of ten meters.

Plant and also animal life
In between fall and also springtime the Mesaoria Level is vibrant and also eco-friendly, with a wealth of wildflowers, blooming shrubs, and also hedges; there are likewise spots of timberland in which eucalyptus and also numerous kinds of acacia, cypress, as well as lowland want are discovered. Orange haciendas populate the island's northwestern end in the location around Morphou.
The only big wild pet currently enduring is the agrino, a subspecies of wild lamb relevant to the mouflon of the western Mediterranean; it is under stringent defence in a little forested location of the Troodos array. Serpents were extensive in old times, offering the island the name Ophiussa, "the Home of Snakes"; they are currently fairly uncommon.
Cyprus rests on significant movement courses for birds. In springtime as well as fall millions overlook the island, while several varieties of winter months there. Amongst the countless resident varieties are francolin as well as chukar partridges.
Ethnic groups and also languages
The Greek Cypriots, that makeup almost four-fifths of the populace, came down from a blend of indigenous residents and also immigrants from the Peloponnese that conquered Cyprus beginning concerning 1200 BC and also absorbed succeeding inhabitants up to the 16th century. Approximately one-fifth of the populace are Turkish Cypriots, offspring of the soldiers of the Footrest military that overcame the island in 1571 as well as of immigrants from Anatolia brought in by the sultan's federal government.

Negotiation patterns
Adhering to the Turkish profession in 1974 of the north section of the island, this pattern altered, the outcome of the requirement to transplant some 180,000 Greek Cypriot evacuees that had actually run away from the Turkish-controlled location to the southerly component of the island. In comparison, the north part of the island is currently much more sparsely inhabited regardless of the increase of Turkish Cypriots from the south and also the intro of Turkish inhabitants from the landmass.
The 6 communities taped in the 1973 demographics, under the wholehearted republic, were the head office of the island's 6 management areas. Of these Kyrenia (Turkish: Girne), Famagusta (Greek: Ammókhostos; Turkish: Mağusa), as well as the north fifty per cent of Nicosia are to the north of the demarcation line reeled in 1974 and also remain in Turkish Cypriot hands; that part of Nicosia is the management centre of the Turkish Cypriot field. Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, as well as the southerly part of Nicosia, continued to be in Greek Cypriot hands after 1974; that part of Nicosia is the small funding of the whole Republic of Cyprus as well as the management centre of the Greek Cypriot industry.
Market patterns
At times Cypriots have actually emigrated in big numbers, as well as it is approximated that as several real-time abroad as on the island itself. Waves of hefty emigration adhered to the arrangement of self-reliance in 1960 as well as the Turkish profession of North Cyprus in 1974. After 1974 the rise in numbers of Greek Cypriots leaving the island in search of a job, particularly in the Center East, added to a decrease in the populace, yet this tapered off in the 1990s.
Economic climate
In between 1960 as well as 1973 the Republic of Cyprus, running a free-enterprise economic situation based on farming as well as profession, attained a criterion of living greater than many of its neighbours, with the exemption of Israel. Results of dividing
Greek Cypriot losses of land and also individual building in the busy locations were significant, and also they likewise shed Famagusta, the only deepwater port, and also the Nicosia International Flight Terminal. Considering that 1983 the economic situation of the Greek Cypriot market has actually grown, as well as joblessness and also rising cost of living has actually stayed reasonably reduced. In the 1990s the Greek Cypriot field progressively changed itself right into a centre of worldwide transportation profession, vendor delivery, financial, as well as associated solutions.
The Turkish-occupied location has actually not experienced the very same success, nevertheless, and also the Turkish federal government has actually had to fund its economic situation. The southerly area proceeds to provide the north area with electrical power, as well as the north area still refines the sewer of Greek Nicosia.
Farming, forestry, as well as angling
Even more than one-third of the island's cultivatable land is irrigated, primarily in the Mesaoria Level and also around Paphos in the southwest. A program of land loan consolidation was passed in 1969; it fulfilled with resistance, specifically from Turkish Cypriot landowners, as well as was just really gradually carried out, yet it has actually continued with significant success in the Greek Cypriot industry.
The significant plants of the Greek Cypriot market consist of grapes, deciduous fruits, potatoes, grain grains, veggies, carbs, as well as olives. The Republic of Cyprus started to broaden monetary solutions, consisting of overseas financial, in 1982. Persistent profession deficiencies are countered by invoices from vacationers, compensations sent out the house by expatriate Greek Cypriots, as well as invoices from the British army bases on the island.
Solutions
After the dividing the visitor profession recouped quickly in the Greek Cypriot market: to respond to the loss of Kyrenia and also the Famagusta-Varosha location, which had actually been the leading seaside hotels, the southerly seaside communities of Limassol, Larnaca, and also Paphos was additionally created to fit travellers. Given that the mid-1980s, tourist has actually been the biggest resource of international earnings for the Greek Cypriot market.
Work and also tax
With the exception of the years quickly adhering to the Turkish intrusion, Cyprus has actually kept a reduced general degree of joblessness-- amongst the most affordable in Europe-- as well as work union task has actually been solid, with virtually two-thirds of Cypriot employees coming from unions. About quarter of the Cypriot labour force is utilized in the profession, while the solution market is the 2nd biggest company, with greater than one-fifth of employees participated in some service-related line of work, primarily in the tourist market. Farming, when the pillar of the Cypriot economic climate, currently uses less than one-tenth of the labour force.

Transport as well as telecoms
In Roman times the island had a strong roadway system, however, by the time of the British line of work in 1878, the only carriage roadway was in between Nicosia as well as Larnaca. The Greek Cypriot market proceeds to establish as well as keep a considerable network of contemporary freeways.

Alleviation
The sturdy island of Cyprus appears like a pan, with the deal with prolonging northeastward from the primary component. The Kyrenia Hills-- the western section of which is additionally recognized as the Pentadaktylos for its five-fingered height-- expand for 100 miles (160 kilometres) parallel to as well as simply inland from the north shore.
The Troodos Hills in the south and also southwest are of the fantastic rate of interest to rock hounds, that have actually ended that the variety, composed of igneous rock, was developed from liquified rock underneath the deep sea (Tethys) that when divided the continents of Eurasia as well as Afro-Arabia. The variety extends eastward regarding 50 miles (80 kilometres) from near the island's west coastline to the 2,260-foot (689-metre) Stavrovouni height, concerning 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the southeastern shore. The array's top, Mount Olympus (additionally called Mount Troodos), gets to an altitude of 6,401 feet (1,951 metres) as well as is the island's acme. In between both varieties exists the Mesaoria Level (its name implies "In between the Hills"), which is low-lying and also level as well as prolongs from Morphou Bay in the west to Famagusta Bay in the eastern. Approximately in the centre of the level is Nicosia. The level is the primary cereal-growing location on the island.

With that established, let’s get going on the reading and the chatting!
QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?
QUESTION 2. What are your thoughts on the story’s format of telling everything in a long flashback? In what ways do you think this helps with the blackouts and story’s end?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. At the moment, who is your favorite character? What about that character earns them this favor?
QUESTION 4. Why do you think Scott was seeing Laura everywhere? Additionally, what was he seeing? A ghost, an angel, or an illusion? What do you think the symbolic purpose was for the story?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 5. What has been your favorite illustration in the comic so far? What specifically about it do you like?
QUESTION 6. What do you think about the story’s themes regarding death changing one’s perspective on life? Why do you think that was the needed catalyst for Scott to mend his relationship with Marcus?
RebelVampire
1) My favorite scene in the comic is probably the one where ghost Laura realizes that she's dead. The emotions at that moment were unbelievably perfect, both between her and Scott. And like, the story was already sad enough. That really was a gut punch to find out that somehow, Laura never knew. It was trauma that hit really hard and I loved it for that. 2) Normally I'm skeptical of flashback stories, but I think in this case it really did aid how the story was delivered. Even without the blackouts, the format kind of allowed the story to skip around at a much faster pace than you would expect. Thus, despite being a drama, everything felt like it was always moving dramatically fast, even if technically only a few days passed in the course of the story. But I think when it came to the end, this is when the format really shined. Since at the end, we see that it was not just those 5 days where bad stuff happened and everyone moved on. The fact the end is older Scott really reflects just how his life instantly went to hell and changed forever never to be fixed. And I kind of think that captures how death feels sometimes. So in that way, having older Scott reflecting on everything offers a different perspective on life moving on than we otherwise would have gotten.
3) My favorite character is probably Scott. He's a really interesting character of contrasts. Has all the money and luck, but at the same time seems disconnected from it all. And ya know, there's the whole blackouts psychosis thing going on, which seeing him go through that is just overall an interesting journey. By the end, I was actually really upset along with him Laura was dead, cause I wanted Scott to be happy despite it all. But alas, it was not to be. 4) So while I call her ghost Laura, I am skeptical it was an actual ghost. Like I know Marcus said he could see her too, but everything is filtered through Scott's perspective. And well, Scott is the most unreliable narrator if I ever did see one. XD So I lean towards illusion. As for the symbolism, I do think she might have served as an important embodiment of acceptance. Cause while Scott seemed to accept she was gone, I really doubt he did, especially not in the first day or two. And I think Laura was the manifestation of that non-acceptance. Where despite logically Scott knew she was gone, his heart refused that Laura wasn't there as usual. Thus why Laura disappeared after she was buried. Cause burying someone kind of brings closure in certain ways (though not entirely). And with Laura buried, I think Scott finally took that final step towards accepting that she was gone, wasn't coming back, and that was that.
RebelVampire
5) My fave illustration so far is actually probably any landscape picture from the first episode https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/missing-pieces/ep-1-confessions/viewer?title_no=192867&episode_no=1 I'm always a sucker for landscapes, and flat out, I love the details on the mansion. Like that took a lot of effort to draw, but I am 100% sold on the design. Like there's even slight texturing on the walls and floors giving it character, and I just love that attention to detail. 6) This actually reminds me of a study that was done recently. Too lazy to find and link, but it talked about how our minds protect us by viewing death as something that only happens to "everybody else" but not ourselves. And while this study was focused on ourselves, I would argue this extends somewhat to the people around us. A lot of people just plain would rather pretend their family, friends, pets, and other loved ones are immune to death. And yet then it happens, and I think no matter who you are, it forces you to contend with that fact that 1) people are mortal and 2) life is never static and constantly changes. And I feel that's what the story shows with its themes. That even if we want things to be the same after someone close to us dies, it just cant be. And even if we don't want it to, the fact we have to change how we go about life is a driving force for changing one's perspective. Thus why it was the needed catalyst for Marcus and Scott. Until Laura died, both were static. There was no reason to change, and there was always the illusion there'd be time later to make amends, fight, etc. Whatever they wanted to do. But with Laura dying, whether they wanted to or not, they had to change, because their lives went from something that had Laura in it to lives that had no Laura.

QUESTION 7. Which characters do you enjoy seeing interact the most? What about their dynamic interests you?
QUESTION 8. Do you think Scott and David deserved their vengeance? Why or why not? What part of their vengeance made the most emotional impact for you? In the bigger picture of things, what do you think we can learn from the story’s themes of vengeance?

I think one interesting aspect of this series relates to a couple questions that have been asked so far - that death can have both positive and negative aspects. Like, Laura's death caused Marcus & Scott to reconcile. Marcus finally began to accept David. But... there's also the vengeance that consumed and quite literally broke Scott. David was never able to have a loving relationship because of the weight of his actions. Like, the story is facing "death can be a chance to move on and start anew" off against "it's impossible to truly move past the death of a loved one", and it's like... i'm not sure there's a correct answer here. Like obviously the stuff they did to Mike was over the top, but... Revenge!Scott & David were right in that they never would have been truly happy had Mike actually escaped. Perhaps the answer lies in some middle ground, but, like... if they had captured Mike and turned him over to the police before evidence came in, would that have been right? And, like, what if Mike had just spent life in prison? Would they feel that justice had truly been served, and be able to move on with their lives? Or would Scott's desire for vengeance keep bubbling up regardless? Is there any scenario where David has a happy life with Nathan, or was that option taken away the moment Laura was killed?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 9. What sorts of art or story details have you noticed in the way the comic is crafted that you think deserves attention?
QUESTION 10. What do you think the blackouts say about who Scott is? Is it split personalities, parts of one whole person, or something else? Why do you think Scott’s tale of vengeance features this, and what does it say about people in general?
RebelVampire
@snuffysam I love that analysis of the story. It really is a story of contrasts about how death can be a new start but also potentially something you never get past. Although I would like to say that I think David could've had the chance. Even Scott said David wouldn't have gone along with it had they not been drunk. And I kind of believe him when they said that. I easily think there's a parallel world where David noped out, had a good life with Nathan, and Revenge!Scott killed Mike and went to jail or something like that. Which I am saying I don't think the opposite is true; that there's a scenario where Scott could've been happy and moved on. Cause the unfortunate thing about death, is you cant hit ctrl z on it. I don't think Scott could ever forgive Mike ever and no justice would ever be good enough.
RebelVampire
7) I think I enjoyed seeing David and Scott interacting the most. I kind of like all these little hints about the end in the way David interacts with Scott. And yet a lot of it just comes off as David just being kind of weird. And then the whole end just adds so much more weight to their interactions, that it's really worth a second read to just soak in everything that was a red flag. 8) I don't think Scott and David deserved their vengeance, but I'm also not one big on vengeance. Cause sure, Mike is dead and gone. But both of their lives were eternally ruined. It didn't help put Laura to rest (as she already moved on), it didn't help make Scott happier (as he completely broke himself, and it didn't help make David happier (as he lived with guilt forever). So in the end, they gained nothing, and someone else was added to the dead pile for that nothing. And additionally, because Mike wasn't brought to justice through the proper channels, nothing was learned by anybody else in society about how killing is bad and don't do it. And basically, yeah. For me those are the things we should learn. Vengeance is temporary satisfaction. It doesn't fix shit and just leaves everyone worse off. As far as the emotional impact, it was really the whole package and probably the conclusion. Cause again, they broke themselves for this. And I think to a degree, that's the saddest part. That while they could've learned to live with Laura's death, it's the other stuff that killed their souls.
RebelVampire
9) I love the details in the dialogue. To pull off the ending it did, the story really needed tight control, especially with David. And I love how it was executed. There was always that fine line between sensing something is wrong but also kind of wondering if you're being paranoid along with Scott or something. And I love all those little hints and pullbacks to keep you guessing. 10) If you ever listen to people who have killed spontaneously out of rage, you'll often hear them describe it kind of as a blackout. Some barely even remember doing the crime, and all they remember is the feeling of white hot rage. For me, this story somewhat parallels that. And in essence, all they say about who Scott is is that he's an angry person upset over the death of his wife. And I think that necessitated the formation of split personalities, as while not every case, there are cases where they form as a self defense mechanism. So while the first blackout was probably rage, the subsequent blackouts were a split personality thing protecting his mind from dealing with the debate about feeling justified vs. feeling guilty. As for what this tale says about people in general, I think it's that we all have the capacity to make poor choices and kill others. Like even if were nice people who give to charity, we all have the capacity for evil. And that sometimes this is good to remember, cause it reminds us to think our actions through before we act on emotional impulses and do stuff we can never take back.
Copper Mouflon
Hey, writer here. Been watching all the analysis you've done so far and just wanted to chime in and say omg!!! I absolutely love everything you've said! Both of you are right about what you've said. @snuffysam we did indeed not want to offer an answer to the questions posed. Just have the two "sides" collide and let the audience decide after they witness the outcome. @RebelVampire I love how you analyze the story and spot both the intentions and the hard work it took for us to achieve this end result! Makes me happy and proud to see people understanding all the messages and all the stuff between the lines and realizing there were clues throughout the story about the conclusion. I wanted this story to be one that as soon as you read it once you would want to go back and reread it this time knowing how it ends and seeing all the subtle clues we dropped in various episodes. If you want to ask me anything feel free! I thoroughly enjoyed all you've said so far. :D(edited)
RebelVampire
QUESTION 11. What do you think are this particular comic’s strengths? What do you think makes this comic unique? Please elaborate.
QUESTION 12. Given the ending, do you think the righteous side of Scott will ever prevail and turn himself in? Additionally, why do you feel that side of Scott is getting stronger compared to his vengeful side that remembers events?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 13. Do you have any final thoughts to share overall about the comic now that it's finished? QUESTION 14. Overall, how has the story impacted you, whether emotionally, the way you view something about life, or the way stories are crafted? In other words, what will stick with you about this story?
RebelVampire
11) I think the comic's strength is just in how the story is told. I've talked about this to death, probably, but the small hints in foreshadowing and everything really make for great twists. Cause its the kind of twists where thinking back it's so obviously but it's handled so well that in the moment, you cant really see it. And those sorts of twists are hard to pull off. 12) Given Scott's age, I don't think so. I think Scott is likely to die before his non-revenge side manages to gain control and stay in control. Or, optionally, by that point people will just think he's so old he's gone senile and everyone will brush it off as some old man just having memory issues. As for why the non-revenge side is getting stronger, I think it actually has a lot to do with Scott's age. I'm gonna trigger warning here for anyone who feels uncomfortable talking about mortality. Skip this last bit if need be. As we get older, we're faced more and more with the fact of our own mortality. While we can ignore it, the older we get, the less time there is. And once you start hitting close to the average lifespan age, the more you realize that every year you're not dead is kind of a miracle. But that being said, this sort of stuff often makes us think back on life and reflect on whether we lived a good life or not. And I kind of feel like that's what's happening to Scott. He's reflecting and afraid he didn't live a good life after all and that if there are no consequences now, if there is an afterlife, there could be consequences there. So I think those fears are kind of overriding the vengeance side as the end draws near.
RebelVampire
13) My final thoughts are just that I hope more people read it. It is certainly mature with lots of dark themes, but the story is woven together really well and the narrative is kept super tight. Every scene has a purpose, and the comic is just the right length to keep you invested without dragging you along drama after drama. 14) I think what will stick with me the most is the blackouts. How people's brains protect them from themselves is not something I always think about enough. And yet here it was used to beautifully to create not only great themes of revenge, but also create a good twist ending. This is definitely something I'll remember for my own work. This story is a good example of how we can be our own worst enemy and flat out not realize that cause our brains don't let us. I think this is also something that will stick with me because, honestly, that's a little horrifying too. We always want to believe that we're in control of our minds, but that just is not the case all the time. So there's a lot that could be done with these ideas.

COMIC TEA PARTY- WEEK LONG BOOK CLUB START!
Hello and welcome everyone to Comic Tea Party’s Week Long Book Club~! This week we’ll be focusing on Court of Roses by Kelsey Peterson~! (http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/)
You are free to read and comment about the comic all week at your own pace, so stop on by whenever it suits your schedule! Remember, though, that while we allow constructive criticism, our focus is to have fun and appreciate the comic. Below you will find four questions to get you started on the discussion. However, a new question will be posted and pinned everyday (between 12:01AM and 6AM PDT), so keep checking back for more! You have until July 14th to tell us all your wonderful thoughts! With that established, let’s get going on the reading and the chatting!
QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?
QUESTION 2. What do you think is the story behind Merlow’s bad dreams? What demons is Merlow fighting exactly, and why do some of those “demons” want him to hurt others? What does it have to do with Merlow being triggered by Nocturne?
khkddn
1) hmm visually speaking I think my fave scene is when Diana shoots all those arrows http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/117/ it just looks so cool
But I also liked when merlow bonded with the kiddos who were curious about his bagpipes, that was a cute moment
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. At the moment, who is your favorite character? What about that character earns them this favor?
QUESTION 4. What do you think is the cause of Nocturne’s unfortunate circumstances that he mentions having to make due with? What might this have to do with his poor amount of stamina or immense magical gifts?
RebelVampire
1) Probably the scene where Nocturne and Merlow sleep in an alley under the rain. I am a sucker for rain, and I liked seeing Merlow's acknowledgement that he was kind of a dick but that Nocturne was still able to forgive him. Plus, the atmosphere the rain added was too perfect. Somehow a spot of warmth among the cold and bleak. 2) I see this going in one of two ways in terms of my current theories. Way 1 is that Merlow's dad wasn't just an elf, but like, ultra evil wizard elf. And his dad is trying to control Merlow and use him as a beautiful and dangerous pawn. Way 2 is that Merlow got possessed by a literal demon and that fighting the demon from taking control is a daily battle. I think in regards to hurting others, asides it just being that's what evil things do, having Merlow hurt others is a pretty quick way to break his spirit and just have him cave to the dark side. Nocturne kind of looks demon-y so there could be that connection. Or maybe whatever Merlow has within him just hates Nocturne's species since that seems to be a common theme in the world.
3) Nocturne. Nocturne is classy, powerful, but has that cute smidgen of vulnerability that makes him endearing. Also very classy, and how can you not like classy people? 4) Nocturne maybe had a fight that did not end well due to overconfidence maybe. And this left him permanently weakened with poor stamina. I also get the sense that there is some deeper emotional trauma hidden in this. Like the person that caused his weak stamina was someone super close who probably betrayed him. Cause every story needs a good betrayal? XD Alternatively, maybe he just had a poor dice roll to begin with for the game.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
Those theories with Merlow and Nocturne are really cool, Rebel! aaaaa it's so neat to see people speculating this stuff.
That alley scene came out so nice too, I was happy with it. My own favorite scene so far... it's hard to pick, but I think it was the whole sequence of the main bards fighting the bandits that stormed the festival. Getting to let everyone show off, from Sven's muscle, to Feliks' conjuring madness, to Diana's enchanted tidinit, to Nocturne's mysterious power saving Merlow.(edited)
RebelVampire
QUESTION 5. What has been your favorite illustration in the comic so far? What specifically about it do you like?
QUESTION 6. What do you think the background stories are for Feliks and Sven? How might Merlow’s pre-established friendship with Feliks affect his interactions with the rest of the bards given they have more history?
Attila Polyák
I like had no time the entire week and could only read till the page where we see Sung from a distance. I didn't want to comment before I catch up, but now that I found a bit of time I get a server not found error. My luck is horrible. :( That said I do feel like my favourite scene will be the bit where Merlow performed and the cats came to listen. That was soo hear warming, but I'd like to read the rest before saying anything.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
Ugh, sorry, comicfury just, goes down sonetimes...
khkddn
3) merlow is my favorite character, he just seems so nice and sunshine-y! Diana is also cool too though, and I also like Feliks... decisions is Hard
ErinPtah (Leif & Thorn | BICP)
I don't feel like I know any of the characters well enough to have a favorite yet! I know how they act on the surface -- so far Merlow is the most entertaining and Nocturne is the most aww-inducing -- but we haven't gotten into the depths yet. Anyone could become my official favorite with the right reveal.
Was Merlow actually "triggered" by Nocturne, or just upset? Important difference there! I took it as the standard fantasy trope of "these two species have a history of antagonism, but after fighting on the same side for a while they'll develop an Unlikely Bond, and discover that they are Not So Different After All."
Favorite scene so far, hands-down, this page. Perfect cinematic smash-cut, makes me laugh every time. http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/22
...no elaborate backstory theories from me, pretty sure Guilded Age permanently ruined me for theorizing about fantasy comics. Just looking forward to seeing where things go.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
That's a really popular page lol!!!
keii4ii
I have yet to catch up with the archive, but omg that is an awesome-tastic page (and now I wish Discord had a horrible bleeding music note emote to go with this)
snuffysam
real talk? my favorite scene in the comic was this: http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/ not even technically a scene, but the two panels side by side of merlow drinking alone, followed by merlow having a good time with all his friends, just got me right there in the feelings instantly. and the way the panels link to the first and latest page respectively is a stroke of genius. instant hook.
besides that, my favorite scene is the one of diana, sven, and feliks banding together to stop the bandits. these three were at each others' throats a second ago, but having to fight off those attackers brought them closer together. and we got to see them performing as a band while doing it. really makes me look forward to more things to come with the protagonist quintet working together.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
That makes me so, so happy, Sam, I was really excited to make those and code them properly, and I'm happy they have such an impact. :3
RebelVampire
QUESTION 7. Which characters do you enjoy seeing interact the most? What about their dynamic interests you?
QUESTION 8. Do you think Merlow will ever meet his father or open up regarding the subject? What about Diana and her mother? Will something regarding Diana’s enchanted instrument and the history behind it come to play in the story?
RebelVampire
5) Favorite illustration is definitely this place. http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/135/ I adore the particle effects, the change in colors and tone, and everything just works really well together. It's super awe inspiring to see Nocturne get a moment of badassery. <3 6) Feliks probably got banished for too many shenanigans. Since I'm pretty sure Feliks is a bit too comfy with spending nights in jail. As for Sven, I don't know. Maybe he's the one without some sort of tragic back story. Or maybe Sven has a tragic backstory but the tragedy of it all just flew over his head and he didn't notice. I do think there's gotta be at least something bad that drove his desire for justice. Like maybe he had a hero who died tragically or something. I don't know. But I do think Merlow and Feliks' past relationship is gonna drive some wedges. Cause Feliks seems like the type to go "well I've known Merlow longer than all you have" so ya know, everyone will be mad cause it can mean nothing while also being still true and itll just make everything awkward. And Merlow will make adorable faces and try to peace keep.
7) Merlow and Nocturne. They're both really different in terms of their relationship with being bards (or w/e Nocturne wants to call himself). And I think that their different viewpoints really bring out different sides to them that we wouldnt normally get to see. And theres no like bitter conflict either. Just two ppl filled with warm fuzzies trying to get to know each other and navigate the world. 8) Yes to both. The latter because I think he'll have to explain his past more in detail at some point, and that probably means telling everyone the circumstances of his birth. The former because wishful thinking cause there's nothing like meeting your long lost dad who went to get some milk and never came back. Diana too, of course, will probably have to talk about her mother who probably died tragically or, at the very least, when Diana was least prepared for it. I do think Diana's instrument will create conflict. In that someone will go, "Let's steal that enchanted weapon." And then it gets stolen and Diana freaks and everyone does bard battles to get it back for her.
Copper Mouflon
Been reading the comic and so far I'm really enjoying it! Didn't expect to as it's not what I usually read, but hey you kept me hooked and going for the next page! Absolutely loved http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/118/ made me laugh out lout. There's obviously a lot of backstory in these characters and I'm curious to see where this will go!
Copper Mouflon
NNNooooo! I reached the end! Job well done! It only gets better as the story goes along, by the way, Nocturne is BAD ASS, but most of all I love who they all seem rather normal (in the context of the story) yet they all turn out to ... well be so awesome.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
:D!!!
RebelVampire
QUESTION 9. What sorts of art or story details have you noticed in the way the comic is crafted that you think deserves attention?
QUESTION 10. Besides getting hired for a murder investigation, what other consequences do you foresee for the group in regards to what happened at Saung? Will it gain them notoriety, or will it be swept under the rug?
RebelVampire
9) Honestly the detail I'm addicted to is Merlow's hair. Like I like the thought that goes into that colored bit of it, cause that seems like it'd be annoying to remember to include all the time. But more than that, I like seeing the fact that Merlow will actually undo the braid http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/70/ . Like there's several scenes like this where theres recognition that hair isn't plastic and displaces and people don't wear their more elaborate styles to bed usually. It's a nice realistic depiction of how hair works in everyday life. 10) I 100% think they're gonna have some notoriety from it. Cause what makes a better story than some bards who beat up bad guys at a festival. Plus, I'm sure other important people will sing their praises as well. Of course, this notoriety doesn't always mean good. Like sure maybe the king's 2nd cousin's butler will hire them for a job, but now bandit dude's secret twin brother can come and exact revenge on them. It's gonna be a dual edged sword where benefit and trouble will both come looking for them all.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 11. What do you think are this particular comic’s strengths? What do you think makes this comic unique? Please elaborate.
QUESTION 12. Who do you think murdered the count and for what reason? Was there any specific reason the murder took place during the festival? Do you ultimately feel Merlow and company will be able to help?
Attila Polyák
Okay, so questions, yummy! 1, Definitely playing for the cats in the alley, buut the beginning of the bard festival was pretty cool as well. That said, I just feel like that scene grabs the essence of performance so well. I really liked it. 2, I feel like his demons are literal demons and they cause his nightmare, tho I have no idea how he met/got posessed by them. Connection to Nocturne? Probably looks, he is an infernal after all. 3, Torn between Merlow and Nocturne. Merlow is just an ultimate positive dude even tho his demons seem to be rather messed up and Nocturne. Well... He's just plain awesome. 4, I think Nocturne is in this state mostly because of his own decisions. While we do not know much about him, we do know that he is: Not a bard, Someone used to having money around but not in any fear of not being able to use it, Fond of music, Is, magically speaking, rather powerful, In general a sophisticated person, In possession of some rather unusual items. While these circumstances could mean a lot of things, my guess is that he's kindof an alchemist and he somehow traded his stamina for magical capabilities in pursue of another, probably greater, goal. 5, I think my favorite illustration is the middle panel on http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/comics/134/ but really anything on this and the next to pages are. Just. Pure. Awesome. 6, I don't think Merlow's earlier friendship will influence the rest of his relationships as he seems to be generally friendly with almost literally everyone. 7, Merlow and Nocturne. I just find it to be a cool friendship, even though there are quite a few hints that there should be some friction between them for very real and serious reasons. Also Merlow "fanboying" about cool music is just adorable to see. 8, For Merlow... Yes, and I wouldn't be surprised if the topic was very eeply connected to his demons. Diana and her mother... I donno, maybe, but I'm more leaning towards no right now, but it could still happen.
10, I think that being part of the murder investigation will literally mean that they will be doing less bard stuff, which is obvious, but considering that they specifically came to town for the bard contest, it's still a shame. Now... beating the bandits already started them on an inevitable ride to notority, and being involved in the investigaton of such an inportant murder case. That will also boost them on their personal hype trains'. 11, Imo the greatest strength of the comic is the simple fact that even though a lot of not so great things happen to the characters (being thrown out to the streets for night, a murder case, bandit raid, inner demons, etc...) both the characters and the general tone of the story manages to be very positive. That's kinda odd, because this should be like... a bit of a dissonance. But the positive tone is just, simply there. I'd attribute that mostly to how Merlow reacts to everyone around him, but still since we see the story mostly from his perspective it just shines through a lot. Even when he is in pain, literally at times, he just somehow manages to feel positive. 12, I'm really unsure about the murderer, but I kinda feel like it's somehow directly connected to Merlow. Thus I ultimately think that the party will be able to help, one way or another, but the entire situation still feels a bit hazy.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 13. What are you most looking forward to in the comic? Also, do you have any final thoughts to share overall?
QUESTION 14. Overall, do you think the new troupe of bards will be able to get along? What obstacles do you think there will be in them learning to cooperate with one another?
RebelVampire
11) While there are a lot of strengths, the one that stood out to me the most was the character designs. They're all so individualistic, yet each one is very specifically tailored to the character's personality. Like the minute I saw Merlow I was like "this is just a nice dude who maybe is a bit sensitive." and thats exactly what i feel like i got. and i always appreciate when the writing and visual design go hand in hand. 12) I think the count was murdered because nice counts disrupt the order of corruption and makes all the other nobles look back. As for the festival, yes. I actually think someone is trying to pin it on a bard. Especially if that bard's name is Merlow cause Merlow seems to have shitty luck. As for helping, I mean, I'm sure Merlow and company can find something. Although I personally feel like investigative wise Feliks and Nocturne are probably the best suited for the task. But hey the others can provide moral support?
13) I'm looking forward to just finding more out about Nocturne and why people seem to hate Nocturne's species. But just more Nocturne being fancy and classy is fine too. 14) I think the group will get along, but I think some relationships will fair better than others. Like I don't think Feliks and Sven are gonna become best pals anytime soon. And I kind of feel like Sven is gonna struggle fitting in cause he seems a lot more high energy than a lot of them can handle. Outside of that obstacle, I do also think that the biggest obstacle for them will be secrets. Cause they all seem to have something they want to hide, and hiding things from people who are supposed to be your allies can lead to bitter feelings. as everyone wonders why they arent trustworthy etc. etc. so i guess a better way to put it is trust will be their biggest obstacle, and that theyll have to accept a certain level of vulnerability.

Mine is: "A mysterious amnesiac finds clues to his dark past with the help of a determined farmer's daughter." Definitely needs work, but it's something (https://www.callous-whispers-of-the-past.com/)(edited)
Nutty (Court of Roses)
"A fantasy tale following a ragtag troupe of bards out to solve a murder mystery!" https://courtofroses.spiderforest.com/
keii4ii
"Three guys work out their emotional baggage while traveling together in Magical Asia." https://heartofkeol.com/ I'm not 100% happy with the word "traveling" being in the pitch. It isn't inaccurate, but it conveys this leisurely adventure vibe that doesn't match the tone of the story. I'll keep tweaking it, I guess! I actually like its non-sentence, non-serious version better for the tone: "three bois with emotional baggage, in Magical Asia." It sounds like a potentially serious story (which it is), just described in a non-serious manner. Or maybe it's just me?
Cronaj
@keii4ii Maybe the word "questing" instead of "travelling"? I mean, they are on a quest, are they not?
Or journeying?
keii4ii
Questing is too RPG-tastic for me?
Cronaj
These words, to me, depict a bit more of a goal for their travelling
It is a difficult problem to solve though, word choice
keii4ii
Journeying, to me, is forever associated with 'it's all about the journey, not the destination' so it's the opposite of goal-oriented. Problem is that the story is neither about the destination nor about 'explicitly not focusing on the destination.'
Cronaj
Honestly, I want to change "determined farmer's daughter" to something else.
keii4ii
Yeah, wordsmithing is hard!
Cronaj
I mean, I know all about my character, but putting her into words is hard!
Especially since her profession really is keeping house on a farm
Words are a struggle
keii4ii
I can't imply an importance on "goal" with mine, because that in turn implies a shared goal. Problem is HoK is nooooot about shared goals, lol
In fact, not sharing goals is kind of key
Cronaj
So maybe play with that idea
Maybe just changing it to "travelling the same path with different goals" or something like that
keii4ii
I mean I could leave out "while traveling"
Cronaj
shrugs
I'm no expert(edited)
I just try my best, lol
keii4ii
We all are. Trying our best, that is
kayotics
My elevator pitch was part of a joke but ended up working pretty well. “A wizard with anxiety fights off demons of his own making”
Copper Mouflon
Ok let me try this then. Scotty Robinson must relive the worst days of his life in an attempt to solve a mystery four decades old. Will he accept what happened so long ago and discover the missing pieces to his story - of love, loss and tragedy - or will a murderer escape punishment and the mystery remain unsolved forever? https://m.webtoons.com/en/challenge/missing-pieces/list?title_no=192867
IzzyNinjaMaster
"Five adventurers that team up and explore a world of magic. Oh, and there's bad guys."
http://unlikelyheroes.thecomicseries.com/
sssfrs
I always say “A story about living and dead pirates”
It doesn’t convey a whole lot of information thoigh. A better pitch might be a summary like “A band of pirates discover the dead body of their friend and they have to carry out the terms of his will” https://m.tapas.io/series/JoeIsDead(edited)
Cronaj
@sssfrs Wow, that sounds intriguing!
sssfrs
Thanks! You should check it out if you want
I’ve been planning this story for years
Cronaj
@sssfrs lol, I'm already reading it right now
I love the art style oml
sssfrs
Ohh thank you!! I hope you enjoy reading
spacerocketbunny
Ghost Junk Sickness is an action packed sci-fi about two bounty hunters with an unstable dynamic who are pushed to pursue a deadly bounty dubbed "The Ghost" http://www.ghostjunksickness.com/
We had to really work on something that was easy to remember bc trying to pitch it at cons was a bit of a mess
Phin (Heirs of the Veil)
Elevator pitches are always super hard haha. For Heirs of the Veil it would be something like: "A young witch discovers her family's secret in an unfamiliar place, while searching for her lost mother."
MJ Massey
Black Ball is easy: "A magical murder mystery in the 1920s!"
Desnik
Mine is 'Here's my academically cited thesis on hell, oh and I guess there's a story attached to it too'
Capitania do Azar
I have two elevator pitches depending on the audience. For my locals, just mouthing the words "future romans in Régua go find an alien crashlanded in AROUCA" is the funniest thing ever a D is guaranteed to bring results. For a more international audience, I like to go with something on the lines of "Future romans on a mission to find the remains of an ancient satellite end up finding something else. There's dams, computers and probably aliens"
AntiBunny
For AntiBunny http://antibunny.net/ it's this. Humans have enough trouble getting along with each other. Now imagine if humanity wasn't the only sapient species on the planet. Now imagine if you're a member of that species. Try living your life in the shoes of those downtrodden.
