i love your spapel metas and analyses so much! keep them coming please!
can i ask you if you are a film or media studies graduate? because your posts are so well thought of and formulated.
Hello, Anon! Thank you so very much, and I'll do my best to keep 'em coming.
My background is incredibly varied, but it definitely all feeds into how I write these.
It all started with Little Rachel growing up on sets. Not only was I a background/bit actor/commercial actress from a young age, but my mother was a hair and makeup artist.
Whenever I was bullied in school, my mom took me on set. And folks there were welcoming. Directors almost always invited me to sit over their shoulders so I could see the monitors. I'd help out at Crafty. I got to run lines with Michael Rooker, once, as he prepped for a scene.
When mom worked on this one 90's show in Wilmington, she was too tired to collate her scripts by the time she got home. I volunteered to stay up and do it, which gave me the opportunity to see how revisions worked.
Sometimes we got advanced copies of episodes, and I'd sit down with my mother to see how they translated from script to screen, and then how the editors changed the advanced copies to the final versions that aired. It was all fascinating to me.
By age 13, I wrote my first screenplay for fun for Star Trek: Voyager. And I was constantly on editing teams and video teams in high school.
At 16, I joined AFTRA as a Voice Over Artist, and made a decent chunk of change doing it until 2008 when things went sideways in the industry. Also, the Studio where I was a contract player changed hands, and the new owner cared more about shareholders than us peons.
In college, I chose to go after Communications, and both my degrees are in it (Bachelors in Communications - Mass Media, Masters in Strategic Communication). But my minor was Film. I directed, edited, story-boarded, wrote, acted, and lit so many projects. Nothing ground-breaking, of course, but I learned a lot in the practicality of it and used my knowledge of growing up on sets to help our work really shine.
I went into Journalism between Freshman and Sophomore year and did that for many years, working in Broadcast and online journalism as a producer and researcher. My first job at 19 in the newsroom was to watch Iraq War and 9/11 footage and mark which parts were airable and which were not.
I transitioned into theater for a decade, there, and my film side took a step back. I've worked so many different jobs and for so many different clients.
Written articles, a cook book, website content, helped with front-end app development, emails, print pieces, etc. Professionally, these days, I'm a Digital Marketer. Been working freelance for 6 years, now.
I dream of writing TV (and I was a finalist with a Pilot of mine in a contest last year), but the reality is that living in Virginia makes my options and opportunities small. Having a Special Needs child makes moving to California without a job lined up pretty impossible.
But, I'm not disheartened. Chances still exist. Someday, perhaps, I'll sell a script. Perhaps, I'll get to act, again, when the time is right.
And in the meantime... I write scripts. I participate in online table reads with friends. I write these Metas and have so much fun using that portion of my brain, again.
Because while I'm so stoked these Metas have been well-received, I'd write them even if nobody read them. I write because I must. Because I love it. And because no matter where my life takes me... these bits and pieces remain a core part of me.
Anyway, that's a long-winded response, but hopefully I didn't offend you since you've made it through the Metas! Again, thank you for reading and asking the question! I wish you well in all you do.

Lighthouse Films Blog #1 - Natalie McCulloch
I have loved this first month of getting to work as an intern alongside Lighthouse Films. One of things I frequently work on during my hours is metadata. Lighthouse has a partnership with Getty video where they do concept shoots around an idea and produce content off of it. In one of these shoots they produce multiple clips that other corporations can buy and use in advertisements, films, and television. Once a shoot is done the clips go through three different passes in adobe to perfect color correction, start and end time, and framing. I guess I never imagined that so many different elements could go into a 4-10 second video. This isn't something i'm crazy passionate about but it was fascinating to uncover so many different levels of something I had known so little about. I specifically work in metadata which is one of the final processes the selects go through before they are published on to Getty video. In this program we choose the cover image for the video, put all the relating words so companies can discover that clip, and breakdown different elements of whats happening specifically in the shot. Which seems quite bland as I write it hear now, but Ive discovered that after hyper-analyzing what happens in a 5 second clip and writing about it extensively, it conditions you to really see a shot.
Another thing that Lighthouse has been preparing for is the Lighthouse on the Lawn event. This event is in the Northside of Downtown Wilmington, and functions as a community event to outreach to the lower income families that live in the area. The event itself will be a screening of Hotel Transylvania with food and drinks. For this event I've handled mostly the donations for the event. Im also planning on filming the event with another intern to document the community aspect of it.
One of the things I've more recently worked on which was the most interesting to me was designing record covers for a Getty shoot. When Lighthouse films for Getty there can't be anything that shows a brand or a logo. So I created fake records as props for the shoot they are doing. To do this I was actually able to use images I have taken myself and make all different kinds of funky names for them. I even added a lot of overlays and graphic designs for them. Personally the artistic aspect of production design has always been at the front of filmmaking in my mind, so I loved the opportunity to create these for them.

kashvi saxena is a london native, and pearce callahan's ex-wife who is in town seeking another divorce from the man seeing as the first never was filed. she's currently 35 years old and has only been here for about two weeks or so. she is a pr consultant who is looking to acquire two businesses on her own in town, wanting to put her skill and knowledge into making money for herself. she has a very prominent accent and has travelled across europe quite extensively. she's an independent woman who is looked to close off one chapter of her life, looking forward to newer and better things.
BIOGRAPHY:
Kashvi Saxena was born to a perfectly upperclass family in Hampstead in London. She was the third and last child born after two older brothers who not only doted on their only sister but also pestered her to no extent. She was a studious young girl, finding freedom in books and allowing them to sweep her into the vast knowledge they provided. Her brothers had down the correct route of choosing their careers, one choosing to become a doctor and the other an engineer which left the third profession in the accepted trifecta to fall to her—becoming a lawyer.
Kashvi was not good at arguing or confrontation since a very young age. A part of that was due to having others speak for her. She was content always to hide in the shadows of her siblings and allow them to speak and choose for her.
It was only when she decided to choose a career that she first stood up to her parents for the first time. She would not be lawyer, nor would she choose the medical field or engineering like her parents wanted. Instead Kashvi opted to get her degree in the arts, a field that did not surprise her parents or herself. But she thrived, she enjoyed being able to write and read to her heart’s desire. She was so determined that this was the career path for her.
But while her academic future was looking bright, her personal life was doing even better. Because she met the love of her life, Pearce Callahan during this time. Pearce was older to her by five years, but all that seemed to fade away when they were together. She had been supportive of his move from the world of writing to psychology, not missing the joy it brought to him when he spoke about how much he wanted to help people. He truly swept her off her feet and as her first real relationship—it was everything Kashvi had ever dreamed of or read of in her books.
Pearce had been the perfect husband, allowing her to continue her courses the best she could but given how quickly they’d had their nuptials, much to the disapproval of her family—she felt like she needed to take a step back and try earning some money for their family instead.
It was during this time that she discovered her love of marketing. Kashvi had started small, helping local mom and pop shops put their name out there and drive in more business but slowly she began getting recognition for it and thus began her official career as a freelance marketing consultant.
Kashvi would help whoever she could in assisting them to have a bigger reach with their shops and brands and it was during this time that she met Ali Sharif again. Ali had been someone she’d known since she was a child. Apparently Ali’s grandparents and hers had been friends since they were young, living side by side and thus—their fathers too became friends and ultimately so did the kids. Of course Ali was closer to her brothers and while Kashvi had always admired him she’d never really thought much of it.
But upon his return to her life, a widower who was just staring his own coffee shop, Kashvi had felt those familiar flutters she’d recalled having when she was a mere teenager. Ali to his part had always been respectful with her and Kashvi had made it known from their initial meeting that she was married and living a good life with her husband despite his sometimes long hours. But she didn’t fault Pearce for that—how could she when he was doing all this for their future?
However Kashvi’s heart didn't listen to her head at all and she began developing real feelings for Ali through the course of all their professional interactions. Business meetings, turned into dinners. Events turned into private moments where they spoke for hours and hours.
Kashvi Callahan may not have crossed any physical lines with the man but given all the time she was spending with him—it was almost written in the stars that Pearce would begin to grow suspicious. But Kashvi fully defended herself, proclaiming to him over and over that nothing ever happen but after a few such incidents—clandestine moments that Kashvi should’ve stopped from happening…Pearce refused to believe her anymore.
He decided to officially hand her a divorce and given how futile she knew it was to fight with him once his mind was made up, she’d signed the papers and sent them off to his lawyer, not even bothering to retain a lawyer for herself.
This would prove to be her biggest mistake. She’d believed that the divorce would be appropriately handled on his end and never thought about checking the paperwork herself ever again.
Kashvi continued on in life, building up a good name for herself. Promoting different companies and brands through the years allowed her the chance to travel through Europe frequently as well and she was living what she’d call a charmed life.
But the charm came to a stop when she decided to use these skills she possessed and open her own businesses in London. She had found a beautiful bookshop and had been applying for the loan when all of a sudden the banker she was dealing with gave her the shocking news. ‘Upon pulling your credit Ms. Saxena, it looks like you’re still married. We could not find a divorce agreement in the database.’
Needless to say that she was absolutely shocked. It had been over ten years but in the UK there was no law that stated after a certain period of separation that a pair was legally divorced which was what had her finally seek him out. She’d tried reaching out to the lawyer he’d used when he’d sent her the papers but the individual had been no help.
And so that is what brings her to Wilmington, to find her ‘husband’ and officially get the divorce she thought she had gotten ten years ago.

Dumbo (1941)
Dumbo, a film known as “the most emotional film in Disney history,” is a short piece focusing on the story of a young elephant experiencing both the traumas of being bullied and being exploited in a circus simultaneously; emotional indeed. Dumbo has earned a 98% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, a great score, especially considering the length of the film (not long at all, only being one hour and four minutes in totality).
Dumbo is a heartwarming movie with a sad plotline and a happy resolution. It focuses on the destructive practices of animal-handling circuses from the perspective of the abused animals in question. This plot is somewhat diminished by the ending in which the characters continue their life in the circus as well as the speed of the movie; the plot goes by exceptionally fast due to the length of the film. The stork scene in the beginning is a good introduction to the movie, setting the scene for a sweet film before it rips you to shreds. I can understand the title “the most emotional scene in Disney history,” even if I may not entirely agree. The animation is decent; somewhat inconsistent, but not bad, and the backgrounds are bland from time to time. Something enjoyable is that Dumbo does not speak. Having a nonverbal character, even if that character is a child, is an enjoyable aspect of representation that proves you can include non-speaking characters, even protagonists, in successful media. Beyond the basics, there are some concerning aspects of the movie. For starters, there is a song titled, “Song of the Roustabouts.” A “roustabout” is an unskilled laborer, sometimes specifically a circus worker. All of the roustabouts featured in the scene as the song plays are Black men. While this could be overlooked, though likely not unintentional, lyrics such as the following just add salt to the wound: “we never learned to read or write,” “we slave until we’re almost dead,” “we don’t know when we get our pay, and when we do, we throw our pay away,” and “grab that rope, you hairy ape.” Most of these phrases are followed by “we’re happy-hearted roustabouts,” solidifying the previous lyrics, portraying the characters as accepting of what they are singing. Labeling a large group of working class Black men as illiterate, enslaved, stupid, financially irresponsible apes who are content with the aforementioned is disgusting. There is another, more well known and controversial racist aspect of the movie, which I elaborate on in its own paragraph as the situation surrounding it is rather complicated.
As previously mentioned in the description, there are crows featured in the movie, specifically five of them. One of these crows is named Jim Crow, his name later being changed to Dandy “Jim” Crow (the others are Fats, Deacon, Dopey, and Specks). The crows are very obviously Black-coded, though whether or not this is a good or bad thing is very debated, especially considering that one of them is literally named Jim Crow. Obviously, him being named this is not acceptable. Floyd Norman, one of the animators, said that they named Jim Crow after the Jim Crow laws in an attempt to “[take] a cartoony jab at the oppressive South,” which may be logical, but I still find it inappropriate. One of the additional criticisms is that the crows are not only characters, but also caricatures. However, the following, other than Norman, reject this sentiment: Whoopi Goldberg, Leonard Maltin, Michael Wilmington, Alex Wainer, Eric Goldberg, John Canemaker, John Grant, and Ward Kimball. It should be noted that like Norman, Kimball was one of the animators, and therefore both of them had reason to justify the crows as characters with falsified sentiments if they so chose. Additionally, the sentiments of the defenders should be analyzed as well. For example, Grant argued that the crows may be Black caricatures, but complained that concerns with such were biased against white people, stating, “...is it somehow alright to caricature whites but not blacks? That surely is a very deep racism, far deeper than anything in the friendly portrayal of the crows…” While Grant voiced that he also did not approve of naming one of them Jim, his sentiment regarding this supposed “racism against white people” and “white caricatures” is unfounded nonsense that, rather than defends the characters as positive representations of Black people, merely upholds white supremacist viewpoints. Maltin, on the other hand, argues that the crows are positive representation rather than harmful: “The crows are undeniably Black, but they are Black characters, not Black stereotypes.” Maltin makes a respectful analysis that I am prone to agree with. However, there is so much controversy and so many positive and negative aspects to the topic that I am willing to remain neutral. That being said, in order to acknowledge the issue at hand, as well as the fact one of the characters is named after explicitly anti-Black legislation, I will be removing a half point from my final rating.
In conclusion, Dumbo is an okay movie with some charming aspects, but some concerning ones as well. It is definitely a hard-to-watch film, especially for children with any sense of media literacy. Overall, Dumbo receives 5 out of 10 stars from me, an average score. Whole points were deducted for the inconsistent animation, lacking background artwork, rushed plot, and “Song of the Roustabouts” (and the fact that it does not pass the Bechdel Test). A half point was taken for the crows controversy, and another half point was added for the music, which (beyond the “Song of the Roustabouts” of course) was appropriate, fitting for the film, and entertaining.
Summary of the film under the cut.
Dumbo begins with storks delivering babies to all of the animals in the circus. One of the animals, an elephant named Mrs. Jumbo, is still awaiting her baby by morning. He arrives late but she, along with the other elephants, is thrilled when he gets there. That is, until they discover he has larger-than-average ears. The other elephants mock him, calling him “Dumbo,” a mean spin on his actual name, “Jumbo Junior.” Mrs. Jumbo becomes rightfully defensive of her son, and proceeds to defend him throughout the rest of the movie. After the circus is set up, some children start harassing Dumbo and his mother, to which she violently reacts. The Ringmaster removes Mrs. Jumbo from the circus and quarantines her in a small cart, where she remains for the majority of the movie. Dumbo is subsequently left on his own as the other elephants disown him for his large ears and “trouble causing.” Timothy Q. Mouse, a mouse in a ringleader’s outfit, notices Dumbo being mocked and tries to cheer him up. He vows to make him into a star in an attempt to make him feel better. The Ringmaster the next day tries to stack all of the elephants on top of one another as part of the show. He wants Dumbo to springboard on top of all the other elephants, but instead of succeeding, he trips over his ears and knocks the others off the ball they are standing on. As punishment, the Ringmaster makes him a clown, something that alienates him for the other elephants even more. After a terrible clown performance Dumbo and Timothy sit outside the clowns’ tent. The clowns, on their way out to tell the Ringmaster more ways they can mistreat Dumbo, accidently dump some alcohol into a barrel that Dumbo and Timothy proceed to drink from. Thus begins the best, most interesting, and most concerning scene in the whole movie: “Pink Elephants on Parade.” “Pink Elephants on Parade” is a musical scene from Dumbo that emphasizes Dumbo and Timothy’s drunken hallucination by showing a variety of flashing and colorful animations of elephants shape-shifting accompanied by a menacing song. Afterwards, they are awoken in a tree by a bunch of crows who, initially joking, propose that Dumbo might have flown them into the tree. However, they later determine that Dumbo can actually fly using his ears. They give him a “magic feather” to boost his confidence, but it is not actually magic as they claim. During the next clown show, Dumbo flies, stunning everyone in the crowd. Dumbo becomes a sensation, his mother is released, and the two of them are taken away on a silver train car.

New canon obx details from the Pogue Life Scrapbook Hardcover (part 1)
So this book is basically set up as if it's the pogues making a scrapbook of their lives with cute little graphics and handwritten details. Each pogue (including Sarah) has their own section where the content is more skewed toward them, but all of the other pogues write stuff in the margins, and their comments honestly read pretty in-character (at least imo).
According to the author, Joey Elkins, he was asked by the creators to write it, and he was also the script coordinator for season 1, which is why i feel like it's safe to say that the details in the book are supposed to be canonical.
((Throughout this entire book, they pretend that all of the events in the show have happened in 2019 instead of 2020, which is so unnecessarily annoying but yeah i'm just gonna try to shift the years accordingly))
With that disclaimer out of the way, here's some potentially interesting stuff from the first half of the book, going sequentially through each of the sections:
First things first, though. Map. Map.
John B
Big John apparently makes really good banana pancakes, according to Pope
Big John taught John B about the constellations and the North Star
Big John spent 2 years studying archaeology and history at UNC Wilmington
Apparently, Big John taught John B how to scuba dive when he was 10....which pretty blatantly denies the canon but okay??
John B bought the Twinkie when he was 15
I feel like everyone pretty much assumes this already, but the HMS Pogue belonged to Big John before he gave it to John B
JJ once tried and failed to spear a massive tuna when the pogues were out fishing
John B once raced Topper's Malibu 24-MXZ in the HMS Pogue and obviously lost
POTENTIAL JARAH B FIC MATERIAL: One summer, Ward asked John B to work the My Druthers for a kook party, and John B remembers not being noticed by any of the kooks, including Sarah. Sarah adds that she did in fact notice him, and that Topper even got pissy with her because he kept catching her looking at "the cute first mate with the tousled hair and unbuttoned shirt" (in Sarah's words)
John B and JJ have absolutely brought extra sunscreen to the Boneyard to flirt with Tourons
this is such a random detail but the DCS officer's full name is Cheryl Coleman, and she's from the South Carolina DCS, not North Carolina
Ward hired surfing instructors to teach Sarah to surf, but she quickly shoved them off and preferred to learn by herself
The first time Kie went surfing, she was having a really difficult time finding her footing, but after seeing a pack of dolphins in the water with her, she took it as a sign to push through
JJ
Cambank sibling supremacy anyone?? this is cute as fuck okay
One time, JJ asked Big John to lend him his metal detector so he could try to find valuable shit on the beach to pawn. He mostly just found junk, but he did find a brass necklace which he promptly gave to a girl named Shauna, claiming that it was gold. He also found a vintage Hot Wheels Ferrari, which he claims is his prized possession
JJ believes in a bunch of urban legends surrounding the OBX, claiming that one time, Ricky had to patch up some Touron hikers who had some suspicious looking bites
Another very random, specific detail that i personally live for: Mrs. Crain's first name is Alma
JJ has several hiding spots for weed in the Twinkie, including but not limited to: tears in both the back and front seat upholstery, the passenger-side sun flap, under the floor mats, and behind the air conditioning panels (John B says that that last one is a horrible idea as if there has been an incident in the past, so take that how you will)
JJ bought his dirt bike the summer before the show starts, and he apparently got the money from him and John B giving surfing lessons to Tourons
MORE POTENTIAL FIC MATERIAL: i can't even properly summarize this so here is a fourth of july story from the obx
Places JJ has worked and gotten fired from: Island Club (we know how that one ended), Kildare Surf Shop, Pelican Spa, E. Reed Mattress Mart, and Masonboro Beach
Once, the kooks teepeed Kildare High, so JJ snuck onto their football field and ripped it up with his bike. He has also gotten in trouble for selling weed gummies on school property and falling asleep (and apparently snoring very loudly) in Mr. Sunn's class
I'll go over Kie, Pope, and Sarah's sections in another post!!

What do you think Sam and Bucky would gift each other on valentine's day? And where do you think they'd go
Ooh what an awesome question. Thank you. I think they’d gift one another with something meaningful in a private moment. Here, have this:
“I promise, Buck,” said Sam as he pressed both hands to Bucky’s chest while the pair stood in their bedroom. “You don’t have to go all out or whatever for Valentine’s Day. Just bein’ with you is enough.”
Bucky wrapped his arms around Sam’s waist as they each swayed slightly.
“But you’re my Sweetheart, Sammy,” he replied with a dopey grin on his face. “I gotta do somethin’ special for my Sweetheart. For my Lovebird.”
“Aww,” said Sam, still totally smitten by the other man, even after being together for almost five years. “C’mere.”
They shared a gentle kiss before embracing one another. Bucky ran his hand up and down Sam’s back while Sam nestled his head in the crook of Bucky’s neck.
“Do whatever’ll make you happy, Baby,” Sam whispered. “If you’re happy, so am I.”
…..
“I can’t believe Captain America doesn’t get Valentine’s Day off,” said Bucky as he finished up massaging sweet almond oil into Sam’s hair while they sat together on their bed. Sam was finally home, freshly showered, and relaxed while Bucky took care of him.
“It’s a travesty,” said Sam, as he shifted so that he could kiss Bucky. “But I’m glad you didn’t plan anything where we need to go out. Do you know how many selfies with couples I took today? Too many.”
Bucky laughed a little as Sam eased into his arms, his back pressed to Bucky’s chest. The soft candlelight looked warm against their bare skin. Bucky hummed some tune from his youth that he couldn’t really remember properly as Sam let his fingers dance over Bucky’s flesh arm.
“What was Valentine’s Day like when you were younger?” Sam asked, relishing in the feeling of having Bucky’s lips pepper soft kisses to his shoulder.
“Not like this,” he replied, before kissing Sam’s neck. “Not half as good as this. Couldn’t really get up to much with any fellas, like out in the open, but I did give out a few cards to some gals. Pretty things with Cupid or Lovey-Dovey birds on them.”
“Did you love any of them, y’know, the girls you gave cards to?” Sam asked as he entwined his fingers with Bucky’s.
‘’I thought I did,” Bucky admitted as he rested his chin on Sam’s shoulder. “Truth is, I was never in love with them, with anybody, until I met you.”
“Baby, oh my God. You’re so –”
“Romantic?”
“Yes,” Sam replied, bringing Bucky’s hand to his lips so he could kiss his knuckles. “And sappy.”
“Only for you,” Bucky proffered, kissing Sam’s neck again before whispering, “My Lovebird.”
Sam felt a delightful shiver course through his body.
“What about you? What was Valentine’s Day like for you when you were young?”
“Always landed on a scale of boring to a mess,” said Sam with a laugh that vibrated through Bucky’s chest. “Like, in middle school, they used to get us to make cards for our classmates and hand them out.”
“That sounds awful.”
“I know, right? So, anyways, the year I realized I liked dudes, I realized I really liked this one boy in particular.”
“I hate him already,” said Bucky, causing Sam to slap his arm playfully and chuckle.
“Baby.”
“Sorry, go on.”
“Right, so I liked him, and my lil’ goofy gay ass decided to write him a Valentine, sign it with a heart from Sam W, and give it to him, in secret, of course.”
“I mean, I hate this guy, but that’s kinda cute,” said Bucky as he held Sam tighter. “How’d it go? Did you get the boy?”
“It went great, for him and the other Sam W in the class: Samantha fucking Wilmington,” said Sam as both he and Bucky cracked up laughing.
“Aww, I’m sorry, Sweetheart,” said Bucky as he kissed the side of Sam’s face. “You’re too good for him, anyway.”
“You’re so right,” said Sam jokingly as he sat up and searched the floor for his bag. “Okay, enough shootin’ the shit, let’s exchange gifts.”
Bucky reached over to the bedside table and retrieved a neatly wrapped, rectangular box. Sam kneeled on their bed and held a small suede pouch in his hands.
“You go first,” said Sam, looking somewhat nervous.
Bucky smiled at him and then handed the box over. He watched as Sam’s eyes lit up when he saw the small silver chain with the pendant and charms hanging from it.
“Buck, this is so beautiful,” said Sam, holding the chain up to get a better look. There were two little birds sitting on a branch from which two charms hung: One with and engraved ‘S’ and the other with an engraved ‘B’.
“They’re lovebirds,” said Bucky as he gestured for Sam to come closer so he could fix the jewelry to Sam’s neck. Sam straddled his lap and kissed him before whispering his thanks.
“They’re gorgeous.”
“You’re gorgeous,” said Bucky as he drew Sam into another kiss. They rested their brows together a moment before Sam spoke.
“Remember when we first started workin’ together on missions, and you called me Birdie and not Falcon?”
“I was tryin’ to flirt with you, Sammy.”
“Yeah, I know, and I liked it,” Sam replied with a roguish grin. “But I do sort of have this interest in birds.”
“You used to fly around with mechanical wings and call yourself Falcon, Sweetheart. I kind of figured,” said Bucky with a little chuckle.
Sam rolled his eyes, smiled down at Bucky, and then said, “Well, did you know that back in the day people believed that birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day, their forever mates?”
Bucky grinned up at Sam and shook his head.
“I didn’t know that.”
“It’s probably where the term ‘lovebirds’ comes from,” said Sam as he ran one hand over Bucky’s hair. “Anyways, here.”
Sam held the little pouch in his palm. Bucky took it and the opened it up. He poured the contents into his own hand, and a plain gold wedding band fell into his palm. He looked up at Sam with a questioning look in his eyes.
“Sammy?”
“It – it was my Dad’s.”
“Sweetheart.”
“I want you to have it, Buck.”
“Sam, are you sure?”
“I’ve never been surer of anything in my whole life,” he said, closing Bucky’s hand over the small band. “You’re my family, now. I love you and I choose you as my forever mate. This doesn’t have to be anything more than a gift –”
“This is everything,” said Bucky as he peered down at the ring once more, tears welling in his eyes. “Sammy. This is everything. And I choose you, too, Baby. I choose you, too.”

PHASES CH. 12
Warnings: Some language, mention of adult content
P.S. Sorry this one took so long! I have the next 8 chapters outlined so I'm hoping writing will go a little faster. The spice is coming don't worry ;)
Emerson
The rest of Sunday flew by after Jacob and I had breakfast at my house. I had driven him back to his house so he could shower and change and then he spent the whole day showing me around La Push. I loved getting to see the house he grew up in. Sure it was tiny and could probably use a little fixing up but it felt so warm and homey and I loved everything about it.
We stayed down at First Beach until the sun started to set, walking back to his house hand in hand. It had been such a perfect day that I didn’t want to end.
“My Dad must be back.” Jacob said noticing that the porch lights were on. “Would you like to meet him?” Nerves filled my stomach I hadn't expected to meet his family today but of course I wanted to meet the man who raised him. I guess by the deer in headlights look on my face he could tell I was suddenly uneasy. “Don’t be nervous, he’ll love you.” He smiled reassuringly.
“Okay, yeah of course.” I smiled and he led me through the front door.
“Hey Dad.” He called out into the house. “There’s someone I’d like you to meet.” He squeezed my hand as we stood in the living area. From the hallway a middle aged man wheeled himself into the living room and looked from Jacob to me smiling. Jacob hadn’t mentioned his dad was in a wheelchair, we hadn't talked in too much depth about our families just the very basics. It was a touchy subject for me so I didn’t pry about his. All I knew is that he lived with his Dad and has two older sisters. All he knew about me was that my family and I lived in North Carolina prior to me moving and I was an only child. I was curious about his mom though and what had happened to his Dad but it wasn’t something I was going to press. I was in no rush unload my history on him.
“And who do I have the pleasure of meeting?” He said stopping his wheel car in front of us as he glanced at our hands still enclasped. He had dark long hair that came to his shoulders and the same warm eyes and copper skin as Jacob.
“Hi, I’m Emerson Blake.” I said smiling shaking his hand. It was warm but not as warm as Jacob’s.
“It’s wonderful to meet you Emerson. Billy Black. I guess you're the reason Jake’s been in a frenzy this past week.” He said giving Jacob a playful look.
“Thanks Dad.” He said sarcastically, a blush crept up his cheeks and I giggled.
“It’s really nice to meet you Mr. Black.”
“Please call me Billy.”
Billy asked me to stay for dinner and I happily agreed. He put Jacob on grill duty to cook the burgers and I helped Billy in the Kitchen with some side side dishes. We chatted idly and I was shocked at how comfortable I felt helping out in the Black’s kitchen. Billy was great, I instantly liked him, he had such comforting presence about him and I could see how much love he had for his son and family in general. He told me a little bit about the reservation and the Quileute Tribe, it was amazing to hear about their heritage and the rich history their Tribe had. I hadn’t known much about my family history, both my parents had been only children and their parents had passed before I was born, all I knew is my dad was from Forks and my mom Wilmington but other than that I had no clue.
“So Emerson, why did you decide to move all the way out here. Did you come for school?” He asked casually sipping his beer. We had finished up the sides, a simple pasta salad and some baked potato wedges and were now sitting at the table waiting for Jacob to come in with the burgers. Billy like Jacob was really easy to talk to and honestly seemed like the kind of person you could tell almost anything to.
“Not exactly…I am interested in starting classes here though. I took a little break from school, I had never really traveled anywhere prior to this. My Dad actually grew up here so I felt like it was a good opportunity to see more of the country.” He nodded taking in what I said.
Jacob came in with burgers on a plate setting them down on the table before taking a seat next to me.
“What did I miss?” He said smiling at us.
“Emerson was just telling me about her move.” Jacob nodded and I gave him a small smile.
“Is your Dad John Blake?” Billy asked after a moment. He knew my Dad too? I guess it really was a small town.
“Umm yeah. You knew him?”
“I did, he went to high school with a really good friend of mine and we would all hang out when they came down here. He was a great guy, a real jokester.” He chuckled.
I smiled. I wished I could remember him. All I had were some pictures of him, no home videos no momentos. It was hard since my mom really never talked about him but the fact that I was meeting people who had known him made me happy. Maybe I could press Billy for some stories at some point.
“It’s nice to hear good things about him.”
“You’ll have to ask him if he remembers me. How’s he doing these days?” The familiar pit in my stomach appeared at the question.
“He actually passed.”
“Oh I’m sorry Emerson I didn’t know…”
“It’s okay..it was really long time ago, I was really little and unfortunately I don’t really remember him…thank you for your kind words about him though.” I said with a small smile.
“I know how hard it is losing a loved one. I lost my Sarah when Jacob was around nine.” Jacob lost his mom too? I looked over and could see sadness flash in his eyes and he squeezed my hand under the table we shared a look of understanding both having experienced the loss of a parent. Little did he know I had lost my mom as well. I was so thankful he still had Billy and his sisters.
“I’m so sorry you lost your wife, and you your mom.” I looked between both of them. Thinking about their family experiencing such a hard loss broke my heart, especially a young Jacob without a mom.
“Alright enough with the heavy stuff, let’s eat.” Billy said trying to lighten the mood after our moment of silence.
We continued with light casual conversation for the rest of the meal and after we finished up I volunteered to help Jacob clear the table and clean up the kitchen. I was seeing so much more to him, he had more on his plate than I knew and I couldn’t help but admire him even more. He took care of his Dad, worked a full time job and overall had this positive outlook on things.
Once the kitchen was back in order I said goodbye to Billy who was watching TV. He thanked me for all my help this evening and reiterated what a pleasure it was to meet me and that he hoped he would see me again soon. It warmed my heart that his Dad seemed to like me. I wave and Jacob led me out the front door walking me to my car.
“Thanks for staying for dinner, I’m glad you got to meet my Dad. He definitely likes you.” He laughed.
“I’m glad I got to meet him too, he is really great. I am really sorry about your Mom though. I know what it’s like.” I felt emotion bubble up inside me. Jacob could see it written on my face and grabbed my hands squeezing them gently. Instantly I felt calmer with my hands in his.
“Thank you. I have a feeling she would have really liked you too.” He gave me a soft smile. “I’m sorry about your Dad.”
“Thank you.” I nodded and we just stared at each other so many emotions between us. The feelings I was already feeling for him were so strong it was almost scary. I really didn’t want to leave him but it was getting late and I did need to get back home.
“What are your plans this week?” He asked looking down at our hands.
“Probably need to start some job hunting, maybe help out Mary at the Inn. Why?”
“Well I’d love to see you again. Maybe I could take you out for dinner one night?” He smiled warmly.
“I’d love that.” I smiled back. He let go of my hands and pulled me flesh to him wrapping his arms around my waist, my hands were resting on his first chest. He slowly bent down bringing his lips to mine, I hadn't realized how much I had missed them. We lost ourselves in each other until we both broke away for air.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for hours.” He said his breath against my neck, the feeling gave me chills in the best way.
“Me too.” I said catching my breath. We pulled away from our embrace all too soon and Jacob opened my door for me closing it behind me. I turned on my car rolling down the window to say goodbye once more.
“Drive safely, please let me know when you get back.” I could see genuine worry on his face.
“Will do.” I smiled and headed home.
The next couple weeks were a whirlwind. Jacob and I spent as much time together as physically possible. After our first real date where he took me out to dinner in Port Angeles and since then we had been pretty much inseparable. We fell into a pretty consistent routine, during the day he would have work and I would go to the Inn and help out Mary since I was still on the job hunt and then we’d have dinner together almost every evening, mostly at my house but sometimes at his with Billy.
Every night after dinner we’d have lengthy conversations learning more and more about each other. I learned that his Mom passed from a bad car accident, also what had paralyzed Billy. A car accident was how my father had passed as well, it was comforting to have this commonality between us and to be with someone who understood the loss of a parent.
We continued to really test our self control usually ending up cuddling until one of us almost fell asleep. It wasn’t that we didn’t want to have sex. I definitely did… Mutually we had decided to wait a little while and to get to know each other a little more first, at least that’s what we both said. Neither of us were virgins, we both had some experience when it came to sex. For me it was becoming more of a big deal just because I had never liked someone as much as I liked Jacob. I had liked my ex a lot at the time but I knew I was never in love with him, we were just having fun. I hadn’t know Jacob all that long but I did know I was starting to fall for him, what I felt for him I had never felt for anyone else. It was amazing and terrifying at the same time.
Despite our late nights together Jacob didn’t spend the night again after the first night when he had helped me move in. I guess I understood it was more of a pain when you had work the next day but even during the weekends he would head home no matter how late it was. I had offered him to stay, but every time I asked he had a reason he couldn’t. I was little disappointed but I reminded myself he also had Billy to help take care of and he had some other responsibilities on the Reservation as well.
Part of me felt like there was another reason though and there was more he wasn’t telling me. I tried to push it off because there were still things I hadn’t shared with him but one of the things we hadn’t really had an actually conversation about was if we were exclusively dating…With the amount of time we had been spending together I had just assumed we were at this point but it was still something we hadn’t specifically discussed. I felt silly even worrying about it since Jacob was pretty honest and open especially with his feelings. He hadn’t given me any reason for me to think otherwise so for now I would have to and hope that we were on the same page.
It was now Friday afternoon and the weekend was almost here, even though Jacob and I didn't really have anything specific planned I was just excited to spend time with him. Per usual I was at the Inn helping Mary out with where I could, today we cleaning the linens and doing a deep cleaning of the rooms since there weren’t any guests at the moment and the next ones would be arriving in the morning.
Mary and I stood at the dining room table sorting and folding the linens that had just come out of the dryer, it was little things like this that reminded me of my Mom. Sharing normal everyday tasks and daily conversations with her, it was something I missed dearly. I grateful for Mary though, she didn’t know that me being here and helping was as much for me as it was for her.
“Are you seeing Jacob this evening?” Mary asked looking over at me across the table from her, she was thrilled Jacob and I were hanging out so much.
“Probably.” I said blushing a little and she smiled.
I felt my phone buzz, I pulled it out seeing a text from Jacob. “Working late tonight, I’ll let you know when I’m home and maybe you can come over? :) My Dad’s gone for weekend on another fishing trip.”
“That him?” Mary asked.
“Yeah.” I couldn’t help the huge grin on my face. “He’s working late but wants me to come over later.”
“Aww young love.” She sighed happily. “Do tell him I said hello and to not be a stranger.” She said picking up the pile of sheets and pillow cases she had been folding.
“Will do.” I laughed and quickly texted him back saying that sounded great. I picked up my pile and followed Mary upstairs to remake the beds.
Around five I said goodbye to Mary and headed home. I wasn’t sure if I should wait to eat or not Jacob hadn’t mentioned dinner plans and I wasn’t sure how late was “late" for him to work. I decided I’d have a snack and relax on the couch with some TV to keep me entertained while I waited. I thankfully had cable set up now so I had more than just the ten free local channels. I flipped channels for awhile settling on the food network.
A few episodes of “Diner’s, Drive In’s, and Dives” later and still no messages from Jacob, it was now a little after seven. Was he still at work? Hopefully he would be off soon. I decided to go freshen up a bit putting on a little perfume and checking my hair and my minimal daily make up. Staring at my reflection in the mirror I felt like I looked so different from the girl I knew back in North Carolina.
My curls were tamer here, not as much heat & humidity that fueled the constant frizz I had back home. I was slowly losing the little tan I did have and the few freckles I had were fading. Thankfully all the exploring and hiking I was doing with Jacob was keeping me in good shape. I used to run the beach everyday back home but I hadn’t ran at all since I came here. I think the biggest difference in my appearance was I was really happy. Happier than I had ever been maybe. I couldn’t have even imagined me moving here turning out this way, the friendships I had already made, the house I now lived in, the little town I actually loved and Jacob. Never in a million years did I expect to meet someone like him. I was still dealing with grief and sadness but being with Jacob helped me feel whole again.
Walking back into my room from the bathroom I decided to pack an overnight bag, Jacob had said Billy would be gone, so we would have the house to ourselves... Maybe I could spend the night with him? A whole night together, just the two of us…The thought gave me a nervous excitement that made my heart race a little. I grabbed a couple toiletries, a clean pair of clothes for tomorrow and my phone charger throwing them in my little duffle bag. I opened the second drawer of my dresser that housed my pajamas contemplating what to bring. My hand hovered over my flannel set until I saw familiar delicate white lace of my poking out from underneath it. Without thinking anymore I grabbed my favorite night gown, put it in my bag and headed downstairs.
It was getting closer to eight now and still no word from Jacob. Maybe I should just head over? Be waiting for him as a surprise? maybe with dinner? Would that be weird? I made a quick call to place an order for pick up at the local pizza place. Hopefully he liked surprises…I knew I was taking a bit of a chance here and I didn’t want to overstep or seem clingy but for whatever reason I was feeling particularly confident tonight. Maybe it was the thought of all the possibilities tonight held or maybe I was realizing just how strong my feelings for him really both made me feel breathless and exhilarated.
I swiftly locked up, duffle bag slung over my shoulder as I walked to my car in the cool night air. After picking up the pizza and some soda’s for us I made my way down the road to La Push. The more I thought about tonight the more excited I was, we had said we wanted to wait a while but honestly I didn’t want to wait anymore. I just hoped he felt the same way.
I came up to the familiar little red house noticing Jacob’s rabbit was parked in front of the garage. Maybe he took the bike? I parked behind him and got out leaving the food and my bag in the car for now. I noticed the lights were on inside as well. Maybe he just got home? I felt nerves growing in my stomach as I approached the house. What if this was a bad idea? Suddenly I felt anything but confident but proceeded toward the front door.
Through the front window I could see Jacob. Okay he was home…But he wasn’t alone. My heart immediately sank. He was talking with a woman who was other worldly beautiful. She had pale creamy skin and long silky reddish brown hair that curled at the ends, her smile was breathtaking as she looked up at him with her strange golden eyes, they embraced for a hug and I could hear their muffled voices. “I really did miss you Jake.” The young woman said.
“I missed you too, Bella.” He said smiling. Bella.
Jacob and I had briefly told each other about our previous histories. With mine there wasn’t much to tell, other than my most recent ex, there were a couple guys I dated in high school but none of them were really serious. Jacob told me there were a few girls he casually dated and years ago there was one girl he cared for seriously, Bella. From his words they were never really officially “together”. He had had a long time crush on her, then they became closer friends and somewhere along the line they both developed stronger feelings for each other but ultimately it didn’t work out. He didn't elaborate much more than that but I was still curious. Had he loved her? I asked him if he was ever in love with her and he said at the time he thought he was but he was just a kid back then.
I just stood there completely frozen. This was Bella?! This was the girl who he had a crush on years ago and might of loved?! I felt panic go through me, last he had mentioned to me they hadn’t been in contact for a long time and she was married now. So why was she here? With Jacob’s strange nightly behavior lately I just didn’t know what to think. It could be completely innocent, or…I couldn’t bare to think about it. I had a feeling there were things he wasn't telling me but I didn’t expect them to have anything to do with his seriously beautiful ex.
I tried to quietly back away, I had no idea what to do and my head was spinning but I needed to get out of here. My eyes didn’t leave them as I backed up slowly trying to get out of their field of view, suddenly I felt something behind my foot as I tripped losing my balance and falling onto my butt in the wet grass. Glancing behind me I saw the culprit, a wooden stump. Just great, as if this couldn’t get worse. I looked back towards the house and now Bella and Jacob were both staring right at me through the window. Shit. They saw me.

On November 17th back in 1983 the Ramirez family was completed. Amanda nad Joseph Ramirez had welcomed their third and final child into this World at 6:30 in the morning, with two older siblings named Joseph and Viviane impatiently waiting for their new sibling. Another beautiful baby girl was born and everyone wasn’t surprised one bit. They decided to name her Izabella Taylor Ramirez, and that was a name you were going to want to remember. The moment she opened up those beautiful brown eyes and starred up at her mother and father, they were hooked and in love and knew that she was going to be something special. They knew that somehow she was going to change the World a little bit and impact a lot of people.
Izabella’s childhood was pretty much perfect. She had two older siblings whom she loved, parents who were her best friends and a dog that she took care of. Living right smack on the the beach in Wilmington, North Carolina it helped that the girl was a fan of salty air and sea hair. She would spend hours when she wasn’t in school in the ocean, swimming until the sun went down. Her parents had taught her however that education was the most important thing, and even though Izabella was labeled as the Wallflower early on throughout her school years, she studied hard and always got straight A’s. She made a good group of friends and never really felt alone while growing up. Izabella was really overall a happy kid. Aside from surfing, her hobbies included volleyball as she was placed on the varsity volleyball team in high school, she was also a fan of reading and writing. Even if Izabella was considered as a wallflower, the girl was a big part of her school and wrote for her schools newspaper and was on the yearbook committee. It probably wasn’t the best clubs to be apart of, but Izzy didn’t care. In her Junior year of high school when you’re supposed to know what you want to do in life, Izzy figured out she really loved writing. Being editor in chief for her high school newspaper really helped with finding that passion. Getting along with her older siblings, it did help that they were supportive when she had told them she wanted to get into photography and create a blog. On her free days when she wasn’t so busy, that’s what the brunette was doing, she was blogging and becoming obsessed with the World within it.
She soon got into fashion, and watched her blog soar with the content she was posting. When Izabella graduated from high school with honor roll and other achievements, she decided to move out of her small town of Wilmington to New York City. She got accepted into FIT, and majored in Fashion Design, and minored in Film and Media. In college, Izzy pretty much kept to herself but again made a good group of friends and kept to her studies. She didn’t party much, but whenever she did people around Campus knew who she was due to her blog.
Never really getting used to the popularity, Izabella realized she was more than just a blogger. She was a content creator, and had decided during her Senior year of college that she wanted to take this job seriously. After researching more about the job she’s found a passion for, Izabella’s followers grew and grew and grew. She would have never expected it to grow this much. Though Izzy was proud of it. Her blog and YouTube channel was a huge success.
When graduating from FIT again with honor roll and those other achievements, Izabella realized she still loved photography. During the time she’d come home, she decided to take it up upon herself to find a job that included photography. It was the summer time throughout her teenage years, where worked at her local Aquarium. Taking up the job again, this time she became a photographer for them. However, after a few years of living back home, Izabella figured it was time to move again but this time she moved to some place she’s never been before to get a fresh start, Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia was somewhere she always saw herself settling down in.
It was a new city, with a new home and new people. She was twenty-five at the time, twenty-five and trying to figure out the rest of her life. Trying to figure out other little side gigs she could take on. Izabella was always a busy bee, she liked that about herself. She liked the hustle. Atlanta was good for that kind of mindset. Still going strong with her blog and youtube channel, it wasn’t until she met the love of her life and that’s when everything changed. At twenty-eight, being successful and loving Atlanta, she was set up on a blind date by her best friend who also happened to be her assistant. Izabella wasn’t looking for love. She never even dated. Sure, she’s dated while she was in high school and college here and there but nothing serious. Though meeting Nicholas Sanchez had changed her life. He was tall, dark and handsome, just her type and Izabella fell in love with him. She fell in love with him the moment she met him. The two dated for a few years, and at thirty-three they got married. It was late in the game but they didn’t care. At thirty-four, they started trying for a baby, but the two were having trouble. Finally after a couple of failed attempts at IVF, they welcomed their miracle baby at thirty-six and named her Violet Grace Sanchez. Things were perfect for them. Izabella, Nicholas and Violet were perfect, happy and healthy. That wasn’t until at nine months that things took a turn. At nine months old, that was when Violet was diagnosed with Leukemia and the doctors had told Nicholas and Izabella that she only had a little bit left to live.
It had devastated & destroyed them. The news about Violet, their miracle baby had devastated Nicholas and Izabella and the two were on thin ice with one another. They fought about it constantly. As time went on when Violet got sick, she just got worse and worse. The doctors tried everything, but unfortunately just right after her first birthday, Violet had sadly passed away. It destroyed Izabella. The loss of her baby girl had destroyed everything in her. It ruined her marriage to the love of her life, Nicholas and the two had decided to separate. They weren’t divorced. They separated. It was time that the two needed. Time apart to figure things out. They were both lost without their daughter. Their beautiful baby girl.
Izabella always loved to travel and always dreamed about starting over in another town, and that’s exactly what she did. Still being a content creator, and now a freelance photographer, it has been a couple of years since Violet’s passing and Izabella made the decision to move to a different Country. Living in Vancouver, Canada for two years now, she’s been working at another Aquarium and continues with her blog. She continued with her Youtube Channel and is active on instagram and twitter, she has gained a lot more followers and is still passionate about what she does.

My biggest update is that I have found an interview subject for the assignment due on the 21st. Meghan Cook, the Programming Coordinator at Cucalorus and a freelance journalist for Insider. Meghan is a UNCW alum ('16), she participated in a sketch comedy club on campus and has been writing and performing sketches and stand-up comedy around the Wilmington area for years. In January, Meghan worked as a Festival Agent at Sundance. I'm excited to talk to Meghan and learn more about festival-related work, her time at Cucalorus, and what's in store for her.
In GutterBliss news, I have completed the screening criteria outline and decided last minute to create a submission guideline for filmmakers as well in order to build up the website with more content. The music festival GutterJam takes place at Waterline Brewing this Saturday! We had a last-minute change in the lineup but are well on our way to the day of the event. I'm sad I won't be able to attend the festival due to a prior commitment, but I am excited to hear how everything goes from the team when I return and get started on the next project.

Epiphany - Part Four
Paring: Luke Crain x Female Reader
Chapter Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 3,080
Warnings: Talks of drug use and recovery. Swearing and self-doubt.
Description: Life has never been easy for Luke Crain. After the death of Nell, Luke realizes that he needs to make some changes. He decided to stay in Massachusetts and attend rehab. He was determined to remain on his path of sobriety. When you get assigned to be Luke’s sponsor, it opens a new door of possibilities that neither you nor Luke expected.
A/N: I am sorry that it has taken me so long to write and upload this chapter. I have not been feeling so good since I posted that last chapter. Lots of anxiety keeping me from doing things such as write. Anyway, here is the new chapter. I wanted to write about Aunt Janet. I felt that the show didn’t really tell us much about her except that she took care of the kids after the events of Hill House in 1992.
Note: Italics represent the past or past conversations.
Feedback is wonderful. It is nice knowing if people are actually liking this fic.

~Aunt Janet’s House – 2002 ~
“Luke! Hurry up, or you’re going to be late for school!” Aunt Janet yelled up the stairs.
“Luke! Come on!” exclaimed Nellie. “I’ll go check on him.”
“Thanks, sweetie,” said Janet. Her youngest nephew often worried her, especially since it was the tenth anniversary of Olivia’s death this past summer. Janet started to notice that Luke became more recluse and stayed up in his room. The only person Luke would interact with was Nell, which was not surprising to Janet. The twins only managed to become closer as they got older.
What really began to cause Janet to worry was catching Luke steal money from her purse. She asked him what he was doing and why he was stealing. However, Luke could come up with a pretty decent lie about needing money to buy flowers for Olivia’s grave.
In truth, it was to buy beer. Luke had taken a liking to the barley and hops beverage. It helped him feel numb and not worry about anything. Unfortunately, Luke had one too many beers last night and was paying for it. Nellie found him headfirst in the toilet regurgitating the contents of his late-night beer binge.
“Eww, gross. What is wrong with you?” asked Nellie. She pinched her nose as the stench of Luke’s puke was overwhelming.
“What does it look like! I’m sick! Tell Aunt Janet that I can’t go to school.”
“Luke, come on. You have missed too many days already. They’re going to hold you back another year if you miss any more school,” Nellie argued while searching through Luke’s drawers and closet for clothes.
Luke managed to get up from the bathroom floor when he felt it was safe. He rinsed out his mouth to relieve it from the after taste of throw-up.
“Come on! Get cleaned up and put these on,” ordered Nell and shoved Luke’s clothes in his arms.
Luke groaned and plopped down on his bed. “Nellie…I can’t go to school today. I’m too sick.”
“Well, your sickness is also making me sick, but I managed to get up and ready for school today. Now move it! I’ll keep bugging you if you don’t move. I’m not going to let you fall to the waste side. Do you hear me, Luke?”
“Fine! I’m getting dressed!” Luke yelled to get Nellie off of his back.
No matter what occurred between them, neither twin could ever hate the other. They were each other’s best friends and closest confidante. They had to be. Especially now that they were the last two left in Aunt Janet’s care. As soon as their eldest siblings turned eighteen, they hightailed it out of Janet’s house for college.
Luke slowly trudges down the stairs with his backpack slumped on his shoulders.
“Hey, there he is,” greeted Aunt Janet. “Would you like some breakfast, sweetie?”
“No! No breakfast,” Luke replied with his head on the table.
However, Nellie pushed a plate of dry toast in front of him and told him to at least nibble some bites. “Here’s some orange juice. Take slow sips. The last thing we need is you spewing junks in the toilet again,” whispered Nellie while Aunt Janet was in the kitchen. She would not out that her brother was hungover. That last thing Nell wanted was to cause any more trouble for Luke.
She knew why Luke did not want to go to school, and it had to do with, what else, their family. Some of the kids at school saw Luke as an easy target to bully and terrorize. The topic of their “messed-up” family was their go-to whenever they wanted to antagonize Luke. Nell often found herself a target for bullies but could stand up for herself a lot better than Luke.
With the anniversary of Olivia’s death, the bullies made it their mission to torment Luke about growing up without a mother or father. They would push him against the lockers, knocking his glasses off his face, and trip him in the hallways. It was too much to handle, and Luke was tired.
Leaning back in his chair, Luke re-read the words on the computer screen. His instructor loved the essay he turned in and advised him to expand upon it. Luke pushed aside his reservations about exploring his past traumas through writing. It was a better outlet for Luke to help cope and tackle past stressful life experiences. Not only did Luke have support from his instructor and you, but his counselor at Banyan Treatment Center, Rob, also supported the idea of using expressive writing as a way to heal.
Luke could not deny that writing helped clear his head. Something he learned while being in rehab back in Los Angeles. It allowed him to face things from his past that he had pushed aside. However, Luke had some reservations about how much he should…open himself up when it comes to sorting out his past events. There were still things that Luke was not quite ready to face.
Oh my God!" exclaimed Luke. "It has been a month and a half since we have seen that movie. It would be best if you got over the ending. It happened. There is nothing you can do about it."
"I can't, Luke. It was total bullshit!" you yelled back furiously.
Luke calmly said your name to get your attention. "Listen to me; we don't even know if Steve Rogers actually stayed back in time to be with Peggy. He may have…"
"Then where did he go? Huh? He just up and left his friends who he just got back. Steve and Peggy never even dated! They kissed, that is it. Yes, there was an attraction that each had for one another, but that was all it ever way…an attraction. They are a 'what could have been' type of couple—the movie completely throughout all of Steve's character development…right out the window. Whatever, I'm over it," you stated, throwing your hands up in defeat.
You and Luke were driving to his Aunt Janet's house for a visit. He mentioned to you about wanting to visit his aunt for some time but had not gotten around to it. You were surprised that he asked you to come along.
Luke mentioned that Shirley and Theo were too busy to come with him and did not want to go alone. You agreed on the condition that he drive since Aunt Janet lived an hour and a half away from Wilmington. Lately, your anxiety has been going up and down, so you were not comfortable being at the hands of the wheel, especially on the freeway. You did not understand why you had such anxiety these past few days. You chalked it up to being nervous about your final project at school. The assignment was to create a self-portrait. It should be simple enough, but of course, the art instructor wanted students to "think outside of the box" and not have it be a regular standard portrait of themselves.
Each draft you came up with was of you in some state of turmoil, whether it be you depicted on a gurney getting resuscitated from your heroin overdose or lying in a pool of your own vomit. You could not understand why this particular project was giving you such a hard time. You were three-years sober. You had a steady job and gone back to school. Your relationship with your parents was better than ever. So, why the thought of a self-portrait brought upon negative thoughts about oneself?
You mentioned your troubles to Luke, and he was very sympathetic. While he was now 206 days sober, there were times where he felt…like the achievement did not mean much.
"What do you mean by that?" you asked him while on the way to Aunt Janet's house.
"It's just…this isn't my first rodeo when it comes to recovery," Luke began to say. "There is always this little voice in the back of my head that…"
"That it is only temporary. I have that little voice too. I'm not too fond of that little voice. Three years sober, and there are times where I still feel like a total failure. I shouldn't, but…I can't help it," you revealed to Luke honestly.
"Thankfully, there is another little voice in the back of my head that gives tells me that I'm doing a good job now and then. It's just that positive little voice has been a tad quiet lately," you added.
Luke could pick up on the little defeatist tone in your voice, and he did not like it. You immediately felt his worry about you. "Hey," you said to get his attention and placed a hand on his arm. "Don't worry about me, okay. I'm fine. I have my fears like every recovering addict. It is nice to talk to someone about it, particularly someone who understands, you know. That helps."
Silence soon filled the car, but it was not awkward. You never had awkward or uncomfortable silences with Luke. For some reason, Luke was one of the few comforting presences in your life. Regardless of all of the hardships he has gone through in his life, he offered a sense of hopefulness. With his 6'3 stature, Luke really came off more like a gentle giant. It was like he did not view himself as this grown tall man, but probably still felt like that little kid hiding under the bed from the "Tall Man" at Hill House.
"Luke," you said to get his attention. "Are you happy?"
"No," he replied immediately, then clarified when he saw the look you gave him. "I mean, am I happy that I am over 200 days clean, then yes I am, very much so. But…I don't know, there is a small part of me that is scared to be happy…to be content in fear of something going wrong."
When Luke pulled the car into Aunt Janet's driveway, the older woman immediately came out of the house to greet her youngest nephew.
"There he is, my little boy," she said and wrapped her arms around Luke, which he reciprocated.
"Hi Aunt Janet, how are you?"
"I'm fine, darling. How have you been?" Aunt Janet asked, pulling away to get a good look at Luke. He looked much better than he did at Nell's funeral.
"Good. I'm doing good. Everyone is doing…fine," Luke replied, then turned towards you. He introduced you as his friend and not his sponsor to his Aunt, which kind of surprised you.
"So nice to meet you," said Aunt Janet taking your hand. She motioned for you both to follow her into the house. "I hope you both are hungry. I made an array of sandwiches and salads for lunch. Luke, I also made your favorite…chocolate pecan pie bars."
"Thank the Lord because he was hoping you would make them on the car ride here. It was all he talked about?" you teased.
"Once you have one, then you will know what I am talking about," Luke responded with a smile.
Aunt Janet lead you both into the kitchen.
"Can I use the bathroom to freshen up?" you asked her.
"Oh yes, dear. It is down that hallway, the first door to the right," told Aunt Janet as she showed you where to go. "Luke, you should probably wash your hands first," she added.
"Yes, Aunt Janet," he said and went to the sink to wash his hands.
When you were no longer in earshot, Aunt Janet stood beside her nephew and said, "Your friend seems really sweet."
Luke could not hold back his smile, "Yeah, she is genuinely nice. She's fun to hang out with. We have a lot of the same interests. Shirley and Theo have met her as well," he mentioned and shared that both of his sisters really liked you.
Aunt Janet turned her head to see if you came if you were around the corner. When you were not, she leaned over to Luke and said, "Very pretty too. She'd make a lovely…"
"Aunt Janet, she is just a friend. I can't date her anyway. She's…they say you shouldn't date anyone while still in recovery."
"I'm so proud of you," Aunt Janet said as she placed the food on the kitchen table. "You are becoming the man I always knew you could be."
Luke would be lying to himself if he denied that there was some form of attraction that he had for you, both physically and emotionally. He knew that the feelings that he was slowly developing towards you could be considered wrong. You were his sponsor…a dedicated one at that too. It would not be right for him to act on any attraction he may have for you—no doubt, that you would not reciprocate them, which would be disappointing to Luke.
"Better to just suffer in silence," Luke thought to himself.
"Don't you want a girlfriend? A family of your own someday?" asked Aunt Janet.
"Yeah…maybe. Someday. I'm just learning to take care of myself without drugs in my system. There is no way I can be a dedicated father or husband to anyone… at least not right now. I am still a work in progress," Luke admitted to his aunt. "I do like…" But Luke stopped when he heard your footsteps approaching.
"Oh, my goodness. The pictures on the wall… I'm assuming the little kid with glasses is you, Luke."
The three of you sat around the kitchen table with your plates stacked with delicious food.
"Luke was the absolute cutest kid. He had a little lisp as well," Aunt Janet shared. "I have more pictures of the kids if you would like to see them?"
"Yes," you replied ecstatically.
"No," Luke disputed, "We are in the middle of eating."
"We can multitask. Let's see those pictures," you asserted gleefully while Aunt Janet got up from the table.
With a belly full of food, the three you were now sitting outside on the patio, drinking tea, and eating Aunt Janet's yummy chocolate pecan pie bars. You already looked through three photo albums that showed Luke and his siblings' younger years.
"I wanted to take as many pictures as I could of the kids. They hated it, but I told 'em they would appreciate it when they got older," expressed Aunt Janet. "Here's a picture of Nell on her wedding day. That's her husband, Arthur. Sadly, he passed away a couple of months after they got married. But…they are together now."
You looked at the photo of the young couple. Nell looked very much like her older sisters and her mother. You could tell that there was a kindness about Nell just by looking at the picture. She was the type of person to go above and beyond for her family and even strangers. Luke would say that Nell was just that type of person to care about everyone, no matter who they were or where they came from.
Luke did share with you that one of his biggest regrets was not going to Nell's wedding. He said that he tried, but Shirley told him to leave. Luke said that it was for the best and that he was in no right state of mind to support his twin the way she deserved on her wedding day.
Thankfully for Luke, Nell understood and held no hard feelings. She never did when it came to her other half.
Aunt Janet began to sniffle, and when you looked up from the photo, you saw the older woman dab her eyes with a napkin. Out of instinct, Luke grabbed his Aunt's tiny hand and squeezed it with his as a way to show support. Just as he was Aunt Janet's little boy, Nell was her little girl. She was the one to raise them, take care of them, and guide them into adulthood.
None of the Crain children were perfect; they were far beyond that notion. However, there is no denying that if they did not have Aunt Janet take care of them and love them, they could have been worse off. Luke had the overwhelming feeling of guilt encompassing him at the moment as Aunt Janet tried to hold back her tears.
You instantly looked up at Luke. You could feel his sense of guilt towards the way he treated his aunt while growing up. He looked over at you. It was a silent conversation you both were having between one another. You mouthed, "Do you want me to go?" so he could have this moment alone.
With a shake of his head, 'No,' Luke spoke up to get his aunt's attention. "Aunt Janet…I'm sorry. I'm sorry for…for all the Hell I put you through while living here. You did so much for Nell and me, and the others that I…shit all over it. I stole and lied to you like it was my job. You deserved better. I just want you to know that…me getting hooked on drugs…well…that was…no matter what had happened…it was my choice to go down that path of destruction. I love you, Aunt Janet, and I am so appreciative of the sacrifices you made for my siblings and me. I wish that I weren't such a fuck up…"
"Oh sweetheart, no, you are not a…fuck up," Aunt Janet interjected and continued, "Not at all. I love you so much that…I would do anything for you, you know that, right? Your childhood is in the past. It happened. It is a part of you. The fact that you are continuing to remain clean after all that has occurred…well, that is something you should be most proud of. It shows that you are dedicated to your sobriety and turning your life around. No one said this process was easy, but you stayed the course and continued to make good decisions. As I told you earlier, you are becoming the man I always knew you could be."
"Now, I'm going to cry," Luke giggled as he dabbed his eyes with a napkin. "I didn't mean to turn this into a sob fest, but I wanted you to know that I'm sorry for what I put you through and that I love you very much, Aunt Janet."
Aunt Janet emerged from her seat to wrap her arms around her nephew and kiss the top of his head. It was a sweet moment to witness.

Part 1
——————————————————————————
Reluctantly, I trailed behind as JJ led me through the quiet town. My newest home was obviously on the poorer side of town, however that was nothing new to me. And it was close to beach and I hadn’t gotten to go surfing in years!
“So, you know of somewhere I can work?” I questioned, getting tired of the silence. It makes me squeamish and jumpy.
“No promises but I have an idea. Have you ever waited tables before?”
“Holy Shit! A waitress job? JJ do you know how incredible that would be? Cash everyday, plus a paycheck?” I squealed with excitement. I had worked tons of fast food jobs at my various “homes”, but never waitressing. “Sorry,” I said quietly “I got excited.”
“What are you apologizing for? Kie is going to love your enthusiasm for sure.” He responded shaking his head but grinning at your happiness.
“Welcome to The Wreck, Elllie Belly!”
“Ellie Belly? Really?” I looked around at the moderately sized restaurant that was obviously a tourist trap, but I was beyond excited.
I waited while JJ went to go find “Kie”. I don’t know what I expected but not a curly headed, spunky teenager with a bright smile.
“Ellie, Kiara, Kie meet Ellie, my Dads new ward! She is looking for a job, hopefully as a waitress, right Ellie?”
I introduced myself “Right! It’s nice to meet you!”
“Oh that would be incredible! How soon can you start?” She asked excitedly.
“Umm” I looked to JJ who nodded happily “Right now?”.
“Yes, let me get you an apron!”.
As Kie rushed off I turned to JJ and thanked him profusely!
“Oh hush, you just have to let me be your first customer!”
“Deal!”.
I looked around taking in the atmosphere while serving JJ his sweet tea. Since is was only 10:30 in the morning there were few customers, but I knew the lunch rush would come. In the next half hour, Kie showed me the basics. Lunch flew by and I loved the job. We split the tips at the end of the shift and each left with over 60 bucks.
“So, I am assuming your coming back to the Chateau with me? I think we are going out on the boat later.” Kie questioned as we walked towards the road.
“Um yeah I guess I am. What’s the Chateau?”
“Oh you’ll see.” Lie said ominously, “You were a natural at work today!” Kira complimented.
“Only because I had a great teacher!” I joked looking towards the girl.
“Oh shut up!” Kid said as she lightly shoved my shoulder.
We continued the walk to the mysterious Chateau in comfortable silence, not the kind that made me squirrelly. It was nice, talking with Kie, even if it was just small talk. I could definitely see myself being friends with her.
I knew I shouldn’t get attached or excited. It was the number one rule of being a foster kid. If you get attached things get taken away. I’ve gotten attached before and it always causes much more harm than good.
Despite this, walking down the gravel driveway to the little fishing shack and seeing the dock and the water, I felt like I belonged. The feeling took my breath away. Kie led me inside to find JJ and two other boys.
“Ellie!” JJ jumped up and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. “Meet the rest of the Pogues.” He introduced me to a shaggy haired kid named John B and Pope who was looking over some text books.
“What exactly is a Pogue?” I questioned
“Oh well on the island there are Pogues and Kooks.” explained JJ.
“Yeah and kooks are rich jackasses who live on Figure 8” continued Pope.
“I don’t think I would like them very much.” I added as I scrunched my nose in disgust.
“That makes 5 of us.” finished John B.
I set my backpack down as they scrambled to pack for the boat. I helped John B pack the cooler and then I changed into one of Kie’s swimsuits. Thankfully, she had a one-piece in my size because bikinis are not my thing.
Climbing onto the boat, I couldn’t help the déjà vu that washed over me. I could picture jumping into the boat with my mom prepared for a long day off of Wrightsville Beach. Shakily I sat down next to Pope near the front of the boat.
The evening on the water was great. Filled with swimming in the marsh and I even caught a fish thanks to JJ’s help. Over the course of the night I explained that I was from Wilmington North Carolina, a couple hours south of the obx. I also talked about how I had been in foster care for 7 years, since my mom died when I was 9. It was strange letting people I had just met in, but they were kind and they didn’t force me to say anything which was a nice change.
We returned to the Chateau around 11. Pope and Kie went home not long after. It suddenly clicked in my brain that this is where JJ stays on most nights.
“Hey Ellie, you can take the bedroom” said JJ pointing to the open door across the little home.
“Are you sure? I could sleep on the couch. It’s nicer than a lot of places I’ve slept, trust me.”
“No no, you take the bedroom alright?”
“Okay” I said meekly torn between not wanting to argue and not wanting to be a burden.
I still sat down on the couch next to JJ and I was offered a beer, which I declined. John B then offered a juice box which I got a little too excited about. Content with my juice box, I listened as the boys talked about their last two weeks of school and finals. When they asked me about my school, I explained that I did most of it online due to all the moving around.
“That stinks.” John B frowned
“I like it much better than having to relearn some things over and over and then still miss others by the time finals come around.” I explained
“That makes a lot of sense.” JJ concurred.
After a few seconds of silence, I asked one of the questions I had been dying to ask since I got to Kildare County, “So, do you guys surf?”.
“Do we surf?” JJ jumped up obviously excited, “You are talking to the two best surfers in all of the obx!”
“So Ellie, yes we surf.” continued John B, “do you?”
“Well I used to when I was little with my mom, but I loved it then.” I shrugged
“Then we will go in the morning! John B you have an extra board right?” JJ said smiling broadly.
“Yeah, I think it will fit her close enough.”
“Really? That would be awesome!”
“Of course Elle Bell!” JJ laughed.
“And on that nickname I am going to sleep.” I said giggling as I made my way to the extra bedroom.
“Thank you guys for today.”.
I slept a deep sleep dreaming of the beautiful blue eyed surfer boy.
I hope you guys and girls enjoyed!!xoxo Abi

BIOGRAPHY.
(Trigger Warnings: none)
On September 17th back in 1989, the Diaz family was completed. Elizabeth and Antonio Diaz had welcomed their third and final child into this World at 6:30 in the morning, with two older children named Thomas and Ryleigh impatiently waiting for their new sibling. Another beautiful baby girl was born and everyone wasn’t surprised one bit, they decided to name her Viviane. Her beautiful brown eyes opened and starred up at her mother and father, and they couldn’t of been happier and more in love with the little one. Viviane Amelia Diaz was a name to remember.
Viviane’s childhood was pretty much perfect. She had two older siblings whom she loved, parents who were her best friends and a dog that she took care of. Living right smack on the the beach in Wilmington, North Carolina it helped that the girl was a fan of salty air and sea hair. Viviane would spend hours when she wasn’t in school in the ocean, swimming until the sun went down. Her parents had taught her however that education was the most important thing, and even though Viviane was labeled as the Wallflower early on throughout her school years, she studied hard and always got straight A’s. She made a good group of friends and never really felt alone while growing up. Viviane was really a happy kid. Aside from surfing, her hobbies included volleyball as she was placed on the junior varsity volleyball team in high school, she was also a fan of reading and writing. Even if Viviane was considered as a wallflower, the girl was a big part of her school and wrote for her schools newspaper and was on the Yearbook committee. It probably wasn’t the best clubs to be apart of, but Viviane didn’t care. In her Junior year of high school when you’re supposed to know what you want to do in life, Viviane figured out she really loved writing. Being editor in chief for her high school newspaper really helped with finding that passion. Getting along with her siblings, it helped that they were supportive when she had told them she wanted to get into photography and create a blog. On her free days when she wasn’t so busy, that’s what the brunette was doing, was blogging and becoming obsessed with the World within it.
She soon got into fashion, and watched her blog soar with the content she was posting. When Viviane graduated from high school with honor roll and other achievements, she decided to move out of her small town of Wilmington to New York City. She got accepted into FIT, and majored in Fashion Design, and minored in Film and Media. In college, Viviane pretty much kept to herself but again made a good group of friends. She didn’t party much, but whenever she did people around Campus knew who she was due to her blog. Never really getting used to the popularity, Viviane realized she was more than just a blogger. She was a content creator, and had decided during her Senior year of college that she wanted to take this job seriously. After researching more about the job she’s found a passion for, Viviane’s followers grew and grew.
When graduating from FIT again with honor roll and other achievements, once again always being good about school, Viviane realized she still loved photography. During the time she’d come home, she decided to take it up upon herself to find a job that included photography. During the summer time throughout her teenage years, she worked at her local Aquarium. Taking up the job again, this time she became a photographer for them. However, after a few years of living back home, Viviane figured it was time to move again but this time she moved to some place she’s never been before to get a fresh start, which was Crestmont in, South Carolina.
Viviane always loved to travel and always dreamed about starting over in another town, and that’s what she did. Still being a content creator, and now a freelance photographer, Viviane couldn’t of been happier with the decision she has made. Living in Crestmont for six years now, she’s been working at another Aquarium and continues with her blog. She now has a Youtube Channel and is active on instagram and twitter, she has gained a ton of followers and is still passionate about what she does.
