BOTD: Common Nighthawk
Photo: Eric Ellingson
"This widespread and familiar bird may hunt by day or night, catching flying insects in the air. Its bounding, erratic flight and angular wings make it unmistakable except in the southwest and in Florida, where two other types of nighthawks occur. Originally nesting on open ground, Common Nighthawks have learned to nest on flat gravel roofs; their nasal cries and 'booming' display dives may be heard over many cities."

Common nighthawk, Chordeiles minor
On a trip to Galveston this past weekend, I had the pleasure of getting to photograph this beautiful common nighthawk. This fella in particular was found at San Luis Pass, for anyone in the area.
Part of the group of birds known at nightjars, common nighthawks are nocturnal birds who fly at dawn and dusk hunting for aerial insects. Usually, they’re best identified by their sharp “peent” call when in flight, and that’s how I’ll usually know they’re around when I’m walking around at night. I don’t see them during the day often since that’s nap time, but that also makes them much more tolerant of me taking photos. This little one in particular definitely wasn’t pleased by my presence, but was also not bothered enough to fly away. (I found another one the next morning who was not as patient, and flew up and followed me and my dad for about ten minutes).

What’s your opinions on Night Jars? I think they’re fascinating birds with very unique appearances!
All of Caprimulgiformes are super cool for sure! It's not just the unique appearances that fascinate me but the fact that that appearance results from some really amazing adaptations to nighttime insect hunting that allows them to fill a similar niche to bats. Plus, they have some spectacular displays and songs, too! If you're ever lucky enough to be in their habitat at night during the breeding season, the sheer volume of their ringing calls through the forest is incredible.
Where I am, the most common one is Common Nighthawk, and the male's divebomb courtship and territorial display is insanely cool. Racing toward the ground only to pull up at the last second so that the air rushes through their highly-modified wings to create a sonic boom? God. The first time I heard it I didn't understand what animal was even making that sound. Then, to be in a male's territory during the breeding season where he will use that same tactic at your head to intimidate you into leaving his area? I mean, talk about effective!
