Permanent Lighting Solutions: Illuminate Your Space All Year Round
Lighting plays a crucial role in the look, feel, and safety of a property. While temporary lighting is common for seasonal decorations or events, permanent lighting solutions offer a long-term, low-maintenance alternative for both residential and commercial properties. These solutions can enhance curb appeal, improve security, and create ambiance, all while minimizing the hassle of setup and takedown.
In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of permanent lighting solutions, various types available, and how to choose the right system for your needs.
Why Choose Permanent Lighting Solutions?
Permanent lighting systems are installed once and provide year-round illumination for various purposes, from safety to decorative ambiance. Here are a few compelling reasons why more homeowners and business owners are investing in permanent lighting solutions:
1. Enhanced Curb Appeal
Permanent lighting enhances architectural features, highlights landscaping, and illuminates pathways, adding an attractive glow to your property. Well-designed lighting makes a home or business more inviting and can increase its value by improving overall appearance and visibility.
2. Improved Safety and Security
Well-lit properties deter intruders and make it easier to navigate around at night, reducing the risk of accidents. Permanent lighting systems can strategically illuminate areas like driveways, entryways, and pathways, creating a safer environment for residents, employees, and visitors.
3. Low Maintenance and Convenience
Permanent lighting eliminates the need to repeatedly install, remove, or replace lights. With durable and weather-resistant materials, these lights are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Many modern systems also come with app-based or remote controls, allowing easy adjustments without physical interaction.
4. Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
Most permanent lighting solutions use LED technology, which is both energy-efficient and long-lasting. LED lights consume less power, leading to lower utility bills, and they typically last much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, further saving on replacement costs.
5. Customization and Versatility
From color-changing LEDs to dimmable options, permanent lighting solutions offer flexibility for different occasions and settings. Many systems come with programmable features, so you can adjust lighting for holidays, special events, or daily use with ease.
Types of Permanent Lighting Solutions
Permanent lighting systems come in a variety of styles and setups, each designed to serve specific functions and enhance various aspects of a property. Here are some popular types of permanent lighting solutions:
1. Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting highlights outdoor features such as trees, shrubs, and garden paths. These systems can create a stunning nightscape by emphasizing key elements of the yard. Options like spotlights, floodlights, and in-ground lights offer flexibility, allowing you to focus on specific areas or create a soft, ambient glow across your garden.
2. Architectural Lighting
Architectural lighting is used to accentuate the structure of a building, drawing attention to features like columns, arches, or facades. With the use of LED spotlights, uplights, and strip lighting, architectural lighting adds a dramatic effect to buildings at night, perfect for creating a sophisticated look for both homes and commercial properties.
3. Pathway and Driveway Lighting
Pathway and driveway lights ensure that walkways and driveways are well-lit, improving safety and accessibility after dark. Low-level lights are commonly used to provide gentle illumination along pathways, stairs, and entranceways, which reduces glare while offering guidance to guests.
4. Under-Eave Lighting
Under-eave lighting, also known as soffit lighting, is installed beneath the eaves of a roof. This lighting type provides soft, even illumination around the perimeter of the building, enhancing security and adding a subtle, stylish glow that highlights the property’s structure.
5. Color-Changing LED Systems
For those who want flexibility in lighting color, color-changing LED systems are an excellent choice. These systems offer a range of colors and can be programmed to display different hues for holidays, events, or just for a change in ambiance. Many color-changing LED systems can be controlled remotely via smartphone apps.
6. Deck and Patio Lighting
Permanent deck and patio lighting allows homeowners to enjoy outdoor spaces well into the evening, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for gatherings. Lighting options like recessed deck lights, LED string lights, and wall-mounted fixtures add ambiance and make outdoor spaces safer for nighttime use.
7. Smart Lighting Systems
Smart lighting systems are fully programmable and can be controlled remotely through a mobile device or smart home system. These systems allow for easy adjustments, scheduling, and customization, often integrating with other smart home devices for a seamless experience.
Choosing the Right Permanent Lighting Solution
With various options available, choosing the right permanent lighting solution for your property can feel overwhelming. Here are some essential considerations to help you make the best choice:
1. Define Your Lighting Goals
Consider the purpose of your lighting. Are you looking to enhance security, improve aesthetics, or create ambiance? Defining your goals will help narrow down your options and ensure the lighting solution meets your needs.
2. Consider Energy Efficiency
Choose energy-efficient lighting options, like LED fixtures, which consume less electricity and have longer lifespans. LED lights are available in various colors and brightness levels, making them a versatile choice for most permanent lighting needs.
3. Choose Durable, Weather-Resistant Materials
Outdoor lighting solutions must be durable and weather-resistant to withstand different climates and environmental conditions. Look for lights made from corrosion-resistant materials, such as aluminum or stainless steel, and ensure they have an IP (Ingress Protection) rating suitable for outdoor use.
4. Evaluate Smart Features and Automation
If convenience and ease of control are essential to you, consider lighting solutions with smart capabilities. Look for systems that allow remote control, scheduling, and customization. Many smart lighting systems can be integrated with voice-activated devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
5. Seek Professional Installation
While some permanent lighting solutions can be installed by homeowners, professional installation is often recommended for complex setups, such as under-eave or architectural lighting. Professional installers ensure the system is properly wired, securely mounted, and aligned for optimal lighting coverage.
Popular Permanent Lighting Brands
When it comes to permanent lighting solutions, several brands are known for quality, durability, and innovative technology. Here are a few popular brands that offer reliable permanent lighting options:
Philips Hue: Known for its smart lighting technology, Philips Hue offers color-changing LED lights and complete home lighting systems that can be controlled via a mobile app.
FX Luminaire: Specializing in landscape and architectural lighting, FX Luminaire provides high-quality LED fixtures designed for durability and sophisticated aesthetics.
Kichler Lighting: Kichler offers a range of outdoor and architectural lighting options, including path lights, deck lights, and landscape lighting systems that add style and safety.
Lutron: Known for its smart lighting systems, Lutron provides dimmable and programmable lighting solutions that integrate with home automation platforms.
Benefits of Permanent Lighting Solutions for Different Settings
Permanent lighting solutions are versatile and can benefit various types of properties. Here’s how they can enhance different settings:
1. Residential Homes
For homeowners, permanent lighting solutions provide safety, curb appeal, and convenience. From pathway lighting that ensures safe movement to deck lighting that extends outdoor enjoyment, permanent lights add value and functionality to residential spaces.
2. Commercial Properties
For businesses, permanent lighting enhances brand visibility, improves security, and creates a professional appearance. Architectural lighting helps showcase the building’s design, while parking lot and pathway lights improve safety for customers and employees alike.
3. Public Spaces
In parks, plazas, and other public areas, permanent lighting solutions enhance visibility and safety for visitors. Pathway lights, for example, can guide pedestrians, while landscape lighting brings an aesthetic element that encourages community interaction and enjoyment.
4. Retail Locations
For retail spaces, permanent lighting plays a role in attracting customers. Illuminated signs, building facades, and parking lot lights make the space more inviting and accessible, while smart lighting controls allow for seasonal or promotional displays.
Conclusion
Permanent lighting solutions offer a convenient and versatile way to enhance safety, aesthetic appeal, and functionality for both residential and commercial properties. With a variety of options available, including landscape lighting, under-eave lighting, and smart LED systems, these solutions provide long-term benefits that eliminate the need for frequent setup or replacement.
By investing in durable, energy-efficient lighting with programmable features, you can create a space that remains beautifully illuminated all year round. Whether for home or business, a well-planned permanent lighting solution not only adds value but also enhances the experience for everyone who uses the space.

I get the aesthetic appeal of things like bug hotels, but you can create a lot more insect habitat just by leaving a pile of wood in a corner of your yard, or stacking some rocks on top of bare dirt, or leaving old dead plant stems in place instead of removing them. Nooks and crannies are your primary goal, and creating them is completely free! It also generally require you to do less yard maintenance, whereas most of the commercial Mason bee houses, etc, require annual cleaning to be sanitary.

Oceangate
DISCLAIMER: Not a submarine expert. Just an avid fan of learning and watching documentaries - especially Airline and other critical disaster documentaries. Also, this isn’t a set in stone explanation; it is speculation, as everything will be until the experts determine what caused the implosion.
First of all, any and all craft that are used for commercial activity are built to a standard. Every area is checked and kept within a set of parameters that have been determined based on prior accidents and their findings - something that I’ve heard referred to as the ‘autopsy approach’ to safety (taking apart the disaster and putting it back together in a way of figuring out what actually went wrong and finding ways to make sure it doesn’t happen again. It sucks, but we haven’t been ones to take the ‘worrywart’ approach to safety since one company that overdid safety aboard their ships around the time of the Titanic disaster. I’ll add links to these videos or channels at the bottom for those who are interested.)
One of the things that is common across all pressurized vessels is that the seam lines have to be smooth - the slightest fold, the slightest ripple, can be catastrophic. We’ve seen it in airlines time and time again - the skin has to be strong to keep the pressurization inside the aircraft for passenger safety, and between landing and 35,000 feet, the plane ‘breathes’ - the hull actually flexes between air pressure at ground level and the much thinner air at around 35,000 feet. It stands to reason, then, that the same would apply to submarines. (I’m not going to touch on anything in particular, because a lot of sub technology the military uses is either a.) classified b.) hard to decipher unless you’re someone who builds or maintains these subs.)
So, if the same would apply to submarines, then it stands to reason that the hull of the vessel would flex the same way that a plane does. As such, the slight ridge in the seamline of the sub (which I’ve circled) could indeed be the fail point, allowing the pressure to move past the carbon fiber barrier. When that happens in an airplane, you have what is known as explosive decompression - when the pressure inside the plane doesn’t match the pressure outside the plane, the pressure tries to escape. Similarly to popping a balloon, the air inside is more compressed than the air outside. When you pop the balloon, the air pressure inside is released, moving to a less confined space. The sub is the polar opposite - there is more pressure outside than inside, thus any failure, no matter how minute, could indeed cause the sub to implode at depth.
I tell you that so I can say this: the Titan had gone down before, an unknown number of times. The hull had flexed and relaxed, flexed and relaxed, flexed and relaxed. This causes wear. With metal, it causes metal fatigue, which starts as micro tears in the metal that then expands into cracks and, eventually, the metal breaks. Grab a metal paperclip, straighten it, and then bend it back and forth in the middle until it snaps in half. That’s metal fatigue. Over the course of time, that can lead to flaws in the metal. In something the size of the minivan-sized Titan, this is a critical issue.
We don’t know how well this sub was maintained. Considering the statements made by the CEO that safety was a waste after a certain point, we can assume that it wasn’t. This is a commonality among manufacturing companies (I’ve worked in several factories) - preventative maintenance is only performed when necessary, and they are willing to forego said maintenance to save money, even at the detriment of no longer being able to purchase replacement pieces because they’ve used duct tape and children’s dreams to hold the machines together for so long to meet production that replacement parts no longer exist outside of scrap yards.
I’m not saying Titan was in that bad of a shape. In fact, I don’t think it existed long enough to make it to that point. What I am saying is that even with the usual amounts of wear and tear, safety inspections that should have been done clearly weren’t, which is evidenced by the firing of the engineer who brought up the safety concerns, (and later getting sued over it as well.) This can also be seen in the way the seam line rises in the photo. This appears to be a ridge where the binding agent (glue, rivets, etc.) has failed, which would create a weak point in the hull. If so, then there’s no telling how deep the fault runs inside the hull, creating a weakness that would cause the implosion. The hull is carbon fiber. Cool. Carbon fiber is designed to be lightweight. At what was it, 1400(?) atmosphere, the carbon fiber would shatter like an egg shell beneath a car tire.
We should learn from this and enforce stricter safety protocols inside any vessel which could, at any point, carry innocent people. Bystanders who rely on the word of others and place their lives in the hands of designers, engineers, and CEOs should have that trust rewarded, and we should not have any style of disaster that is, as so many are, caused by apathy, caused by stress, caused by exhaustion from overworked and underpaid employees who probably haven’t had a day off in years. Not human error, mind you, because that, unfortunately, is inevitable.
We have, on hand, the technology that could have, would have, saved their lives. The Boeing 777 has redundancies for its redundancies, and is, from what I’ve researched, one of the safest planes in existence. We have nuclear powered submarines that regularly carry crews for months to years at a time without failure. We have that because we have safety measures in place. The loss of life is unfortunate. However, when people have more money than sense, accidents will continue to happen.

Some bee farm pics!
Our honey tasting bar at the shop. We sample every honey we sell. We sell our own honeys of course, as well as honey from bee farms around the world who use our bees in their colonies.
The yard in the middle of the farm in a congregation area for guests and events. We hold many huge events each year such as BuzzFest and the Texas Mead Fest! We also have motorhome and trailer hook ups, glamping tents, and two specialized BNBs for rent. Our sister company, Wildflyer Meadery, is on the farm as well, serving signature hand crafted mead made with our own honey.
A barrel of our honey, and some barrels of mead aging in our Honey House production barn.
One of our many colony clusters on the property. We use this group for scheduled bee keeping lessons and our stewardship program. People can come and work one on one with bees and their keepers, getting hands on education about the care and maintenance of bees and their colonies, as well as future planning, like harvesting honey and wax and splitting colonies so they can grow.
Our syrup tank, full of sugar water, to feed growing colonies and preexisting colonies during the winter. You can see some bees by the spigot stealing a little snack.
Some of our honey available for sale at the shop.
A display of some cool scientific and historic artifacts from the farm over the years. Our farm has been around since 1888, and has been selling bees and products commercially since the 1900s!
A display of some of our recommended starter packages for beginning your own personal colonies. On the left is one example of a bee box set up. We have many sizes, colors, and functionality options available, and they are all hand built on site by our bee keepers. In the middle is a nucleus colony box; it's our bee starter kit. It comes with a queen who is ready to lay, a bunch of worker bees to support her and build the colony, some frames with foundations to get them started, and a ladder feeder with syrup to keep them fed while your colony gets started. And on the right is a box o bees! We sell three pounds of bees to help support a thin colony. We also sell just queens to those who need a replacement or are trying to split their colonies and grow.

The Vampyr Combine are the backbone of Lemuria, building and maintaining the Lemurian Merchant Aerial, and ensuring a steady supply of goods onto and off of the island. Founded and headed by Vampyr, the Combine was intended to progress Vampyric culture in a modern world, instead of stagnating with a veneration of a forgotten past.
The Combine is a loose confederation of several disparate Lemurian factions, and their respective cultures and traditions have blended into a chaotic, functional mix. Gremlins, Goblins, Vampyr, Fae, and human alike live and work together for mutual gain and defense.
The Privateers may run the Docks, the Assembly the Shipyards, and the Goblins repurpose defunct airships into useable parts in the Scrapyard, but the Merchant Aerial of the Vampyr Combine runs the Ports, bringing materials for the Assembly, materiel for the Privateers, and providing a steady business to the Scrapyards.
Their ships are not flashy, fast, or powerful, but when it comes to rugged dependability and long-term functionality, Combine Merchant Aerials simply cannot be beaten. If a thing can be found by coin or cutpurse, the Combine will find a way to get it. The markets, both Black and Legitimate, have unmatched selections and prices.
The Port District rises sharply up from the pastoral landscape of Lemuria. Massive landing platforms squat atop massive vertical warehouses. Massive Merchant Aerials plow through the local airspace to their joint docking/repair slips atop these incredible feats of engineering. Smaller warehouses can generally handle either one massive Aerial, or up to four smaller ones. The largest can handle up to five mammoth Aerials, or up to forty smaller Aerials.
The massive Towers are arranged in several long, straight rows along broad avenues dedicated solely for the smaller, local air and ground travel, with Commercial Districts popping up in the alleys between towers, perpendicular to the Port Avenues.
Atop the Towers, Combine techs work, live, and breathe. Luxury accomodations for the repair Techs and Merchant Aerial crew alike lie just below the loading/unloading floors, between massive fuel tanks and maintenance bays, and the low, eternal rumble of heavy equipment and the loud squeal of single-man speeders used to traverse the vast distances of the Warehouse itself.
The Symphony of the Aerials.
Below the living and maintenance levels are dozens, if not hundreds, of floors dedicated to nothing less than the storage of the titanic amounts of materials that are either waiting to be sent out on a Merchant Aerial or fresh off a Combine airship waiting to be retrieved by Lemurians in need.
And finally, in the lowest reaches of the Aerial Warehouses, lies the public sectors. Massive doorways that rarely close, measured in stories rather than yards, yawning open into a cavernous honeycomb of docking slips and designated landing spaces serviced by an eternal and chaotic caravan of workers, conveyors, and loaders.
Food service, small stores of quiet necessity, and beds to let on demand are all available here, owned and operated by the owners and operators of the entire massive Warehouse. The availability tends to be limited to bare essentials, but any and everything you might ever need (and much that you won’t) can be found elsewhere in Lemuria if you know where to look and can afford it.
Between the peaks of the warehouses, in the valleys where natural light arrives for only a short time per day, the Port’s commercial district has sprung up.
Built vertically of up to a dozen levels layered haphazardly on top of each other, the Commercial Alleys have risen up between the massive Warehouses. Built directly into the sides of adjacent Warehouse Towers, parking is serviced directly by the Towers. Even the tallest of the Commercial Alleys is dwarfed many times over by the smallest of the Towers.
Mostly lit by neon and harsh artificial lighting, even when the sun is at its zenith, the Commercial Alleys never sleep. There is a constant stream of commerce and life, no matter what time of day it is.
Alleys tend to each have their own personality. Some are lit by neon and garish signs. Others have a more natural look, full of growing things with natural bioluminescence.
Temmas’ Alley appears to be no more or less than a giant, free-roaming zoo, with creatures of every possible type and shape lounging and living more or less as they wish. The crafty old Goblin and his band of misfits take great pains to make their animal guests as comfortable as possible, from the artificial waterfall the splits the middle of the Alley to the large watering hole that runs down the Alley’s center. Foregoing their cultures’ tendency to tinker with mechanicals, Temmas and his motley crew instead have focused their attention on pampering biologicals.
Qtleska’s Alley is a natural haven in a city of steel and concrete. Trees, impossibly old and thriving for its location, grow up and around the Towers beside it, cradling shops and inns and restaurants alike in its branches. But the crown jewel of Qtleska’s is the namesake Qtleska’s Library. Not of books, but of plants. Flowers beyond number, shrubs and bushes as far as the Alley can stretch. Trees, vines, mosses, and far more, carefully curated and tended by a small resident Gnoll population. Qtleska and his fellow Gnolls are a common sight in the Port, slowly coming and going along their mute pathways, floral raiment in various stages of blooming upon and into their backs. And somehow, despite the heavy traffic near Qtleska’s Alley, beneath the branches the sounds of airships are somehow muted in this natural oasis amongst the Port’s artifical mountain range.
Entalen’s Alley, meanwhile, is a sharp departure from some of the more natural alleys. Lit by buzzing neon billboards advertising their services, everything is a dull, dark gray. Thin, rickety catwalks criss-cross Alley, and thin walkways along the edges of the Alley service the shops reinforce the feeling of cramped paranoia. Harsh, white spotlights eternally shining down from the ceiling in irregular arcs leave deep shadows between their blasts, while dull, if colorful, light spills from shopfronts, slicing the gloom of Entalen’s into smaller if somehow more intense pools of shadow. The sizzle of frying food is everywhere in this Alley, punctuated by calls of shopkeeps to each other and to prospective clients that hurry from one patch of light to the next, staying together in tight groups if they need to venture down this particular section of the Port.
Roberto’s Alley is softly lit, colored all in white, with smooth, organic curves. Minimalism would be the name of the game, if such a thing would not sound vulgar to the disgustingly wealthy that is Roberto’s Alley’s clientele. Few things are actually sold here, but when they are, enough money to buy small countries are exchanged. No wares are on display, and far from the hawkers in other alleys, every store here has armed security to keep out anyone until they have proved they have a sufficient bank balance. If you need to ask what sort of things are available here, you will be quietly if efficiently frog-marched out of the Alley and warned not to return on pain of pain, because you clearly cannot afford even a sip of water from the most pitiably pedestrian of the shops here. Those that can afford what resides in Roberto’s, well. They know where to go and whom to talk to. But if you’re reading this it clearly isn’t you, so it’s best you move on before security is called.

Book Recommendations: Gardening
Four-Season Food Gardening by Misilla dela Llana
Unlike most other vegetable gardening books on the market, this one approaches the subject through the lens of what you can grow during each of the four seasons, even if you live in a cold climate. Using season-extension techniques, such as cold frames, mini hoop houses, and thick mulches, combined with a thoughtful mixture of annual and perennial crops, you’ll discover that eating from your backyard through all 12 months is possible.
With a hearty dose of enthusiasm and expertise, author Misilla dela Llana of YouTube’s "Learn to Grow" channel presents this season-by-season guide to growing edible plants, covering everything from what tasks and what crops are best for each harvesting season to step-by-step DIY projects for structures and methods to temper weather extremes. With Four-Season Food Gardening you can keep on growing, no matter what challenges Mother Nature presents.
Inside, you’ll find info on:

Coverage includes:
Why seed saving belongs in the home garden
Principles of vegetative and sexual reproduction
Easy inbreeding plants, including legumes, lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers
Plants with a few more challenges, including squash, spinach, onions, and parsley
Brief discussion of more difficult crops, including corn, carrots, and cabbage.

Dirty and Poor
I had little to amuse my inquisitive mind, a few homemade, wooden toys and the hammer I’d confiscated from Dad. Some children like to bang pots and pans; I loved to bang the hammer, mostly on the nails popping up from the old house’s floorboards. The noise let Mother know where I was playing. At first, I bruised my small fingers. With practice, my aim with the hammer became proficient unlike Dad’s.
There weren’t other children to play with. The yard dog, Woolie, black with curly fur, kept me company instead. The dog was so large that I could sit on its back. Together, we observed the comings and goings in our surroundings, in particular the trains passing the house. The rail motor travelled back and forth from Bethania to Beaudesert twice daily. Steam engines hauled regular goods trains. The most exciting, noisy and smelly were the long cattle and horse trains, headed with two steam engines, going to the abattoir. I’d tell my dog everything. He always seemed interested until one day, Woolie became bored and wandered off. The dog was likely bitten by a snake. Time moved slowly with the same daily routine. Except one day, I heard a steam engine’s brakes.
I excitedly watched it stop on the line beside my house. Whilst I wasn’t allowed outside to investigate the unusual event, this was the best day in my life to date! Men offloaded wooden planks from the train’s freight wagons. This second hand timber had come from Camp Cable, the wartime American Army camp, several miles up the line, near Logan Village. Life became interesting. My family were building a house nearby and closer to Bethania Railway Station. My great uncle had transferred to my father a patch of land considered too small for dairy cows or commercial cropping. This triangle of land had been part of the farm established by my forebears before the railway line and the road had separated it. The military had occupied the land and its surrounds with a transit camp. Bethania had been the intersection point for trains transporting troops to the Canungra Jungle Training Camp and Camp Cable.
Pop, an uncle and a neighbour built the cottage where the military’s tents and mess huts had been. Dad wasn’t skilled in carpentry. The simple home had one bedroom, a sitting room, a kitchen, a front veranda and a bathroom with an open wash house and a thunderbox outside. I slept in a cot tucked behind the bedroom cupboard.
As it was in a rural area, the cottage received no rubbish collection, sewerage or water supply services. Rubbish and effluent weren’t an issue. These were buried when Dad showed the inclination. Maintaining sufficient water in the two small tanks for household use and the vegetable garden was an issue. We were dependent on rainfall. Even then, the high tank had to be over half full for enough water pressure to exist for the bathroom and kitchen taps to flow. Mostly, water was dispensed by bucket. I was bathed once a week, and only if I looked sufficiently dirty, in no more than an inch of water in the bath tub. As I didn’t own a toy boat, I didn’t mind.
The cottage did have electricity for lights and three power points for the fridge and sewing machine in the kitchen and the small radio in the sitting room. Dad installed the power pole near the cottage. He purchased a milled log from the sawmiller. Then, he and his mates met, because that was the only labour available, to dig by shovel a large hole in which to stand the pole. At one metre deep, the men hit hard rock. Whilst they didn’t think the hole to be deep enough, they still positioned and raised the pole. For years after, Dad prayed the pole wouldn’t topple on the house in vicious wind. It held until the electricity company replaced it.
A wood stove sat in the kitchen. Finding wood was a chore and a cost most families struggled with. My father fed the stove with used railway sleepers his maintenance gang shared amongst themselves.
Outside, Dad constructed a fowl house from old tanks, sleepers and wire and dug a garden to support the family with eggs, meat and vegetables.
The primitive house met my biggest wish. The rail track ran along the backyard’s fence line! I loved waving at the passengers and guards. Sometimes, I watched Dad banging the spikes along the track.
I was far happier outside, away from Mother’s sight. In addition to the ambience her temperament created, inside the cottage was a horrid place to be. Mother hated housework. We lived in the continual squalor of dirty dishes, clothes, floors and fireplace. The beds weren’t made. The ‘night water’ wasn’t always taken outside early in the morning.
Mother presented a different face outside the cottage however. She was immaculately dressed as a walking advertisement for her dressmaking skills. She was a seamstress and a busy one. Initially, she received her clients in the sitting room but soon a small room was added to the veranda to keep clients away from the squalor. At one point, she started a dressmaking shop with a friend in Beenleigh. Their venture failed quickly as neither understood how to manage a business’ finances.
Money regularly created tension between my parents. There was father’s, mother’s and the housekeeping. Dad handed over the agreed housekeeping from his wage to pay the bills. There never seemed to be enough though. Appliances had been purchased on high interest hire purchase plans. Whatever Mother earnt from sewing appeared to be hers to spend how she wished, usually on more clothes for herself. Dad wasted what remained of his wage on race horses and alcohol. Their financial struggle was a circular form of hell that they couldn’t escape from, precipitated by their inability to work together. Whilst they didn’t physically abuse each other, verbally they did.
