Disturbing bodycam video captured the moment a trained mental-health specialist was fatally shot by a veteran Virginia cop just seconds after she charged at him with a knife and repeatedly slashed him.
Sydney Wilson, 33, was fatally shot by Fairfax County officer Peter Liu in the hall of her apartment building in Reston, just outside Washington D.C., on Sept. 16 after cops were called to carry out a welfare check on her, police said.
The graphic footage, released by police on Monday, showed an “agitated” Wilson opening and then abruptly slamming her door in the officer’s face after he knocked just after 10 a.m.
After nearly three minutes of trying to convince her to re-open the door, Wilson suddenly emerged in a bathrobe, calmly asked “How are you?” — and then immediately brandished the kitchen knife, the video shows.
“Oh Jesus Christ!” the officer gasps, backing away as the towering 6-foot-tall attacker followed.
Wilson, who just months earlier posted proudly about being certified to provide adult mental health first aid, was then caught on camera swiping at the officer — knifing him in the face, police said.
The cop, a 14-year-old department veteran trained in crisis intervention, quickly pulled his firearm and backed up down a dead-end hallway, according to the bodycam clip.
A crazed Wilson, who worked as a leasing operations manager for a commercial real estate firm in DC, was filmed coming towards the officer with the blade held above her head as the officer repeatedly shouted for her to “back up.”
Just seconds later, the knife-wielding woman repeatedly stabbed the officer in the face — prompting him to open fire, cops said.
The attacker was shot three times before she collapsed to the floor, the shocking video shows.
Police Chief Kevin Davis said the officer did everything he could to de-escalate the situation but was trapped in the dead-end hallway when he opened fire.
“It could have been much, much, much worse,” Davis said as he released the clip.
“The slash, gash and slash wound he received was at the top of his forehead.”
Wilson was pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital, police said. The officer, meanwhile, was treated in the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
“Any loss of life is something that we all mourn,” Davis said.
“The person whose life was lost in this particular case is no different; she has a family and friends and loved ones who love her very much, who care about her and undoubtedly are grieving and upset and we acknowledge that and we pray and our thoughts are with this particular family.”
The video of the shooting emerged just months after Wilson revealed in a post on LinkedIn that she had become certified in “adult mental health first aid.”
“As a people manager, mentor, teammate, friend, big cousin, daughter … the list goes on, it’s important to be able to help / identify challenges in myself and others. I think this is the greatest act of love,” she wrote in the post.
“With mental health awareness month starting May 1 (today), the timing feels right,” she added.
Wilson, who attended Georgetown University on a basketball scholarship, became a motivational speaker to young female players after graduating, according to her online obituary.
“Sydney’s legacy of friendship, empathy and love will live on in the hearts of everyone who ever met her,” the obit read.
Meanwhile, the officer who fired the fatal shots remains on administrative duties amid an ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting.

Peter Harris Coaching - Disappointed
Peter Harris, for those that don't know, is the co-author of Commercial Real estate for Dummies book. I have read it multiple times and I even watched all his videos on YouTube. One day I finally went to his website and it talked about his coaching program. So I inquired about it. By the next day I was contacted by someone to get more information on me and what I have done so far in real estate investing. That interview lasted about an hour. I was contacted a couple other times in between the first and second interview and was told many times that the only way they get paid is from splitting your deals that you work on together. Which was fine with me. I was happy about this cause some coaching programs wanted $10k - $30k up front which I don't have. I even mentioned this to them and they said, "we work differently than other coaching programs".
Then the second interview came a few days later. And they ran through how their coaching program works. They talked a lot about working under fire. Meaning they don't just sit you down to teach you, they teach you by you actually going out and working on live deals which they help you with. They pretty much take you by the hand and walk you through the deal.
They teach you how to look for deals, analyze markets, how to structure the deal and present the offers, how to do due diligence, and how to manage the properties. And every other aspect of commercial investing. You get 2 coaching calls (apparently with Peter himself) per week, which has a few students on the call, and a one on one call as well (not sure how often). They also talked about some deal assessment review board that helps you run the numbers of your deals.
Then the disappointment came. They told me that I would need to put up $10k - $20k up front for the training. And on top of that, I would also have to pay $197/month for "tool fees". I assume this means paying for their software that they use (e-partner software). I was like WTF? They had told me that they only take the split of the deal and that "they were a different type of coaching program" to find out that they are just the same as everyone else.
I was so disappointed. Looking for a good mentor that will help you through deals for only a split of the deals is very hard to find. I had one when I started doing residential back in 2001. And finding one for commercial now is nearly impossible. So when I found Mr. Harris's coaching I was excited, only to be let down.
I hate when people / companies mislead people. If they would have told me up front what their real fees were, I would have said thank you and been on my way. I could have respected that. But they (Peter Harris and his company) quickly lost any respect I had for them. Instead I wasted a bunch of time on phone calls for them to hype up their program only to be let down.
Just thought I would post my thoughts here for anyone considering their coaching program so they are not get misled like I was.

Research and Development:
Working on developing my topic, I have identified the three people I want to interview. One works in optometry, one in real estate and one in photography. To research this, I gathered some data about these industries and the women working within them.
Optometry: this medical field is one that is actually growing among women. optometry is allows for the typical 9 to 5 work structure that is less demanding than being a general practitioner or doctor in a hospital setting. This appeals to women who want to work as a healthcare practitioner but have demands outside of work like childcare. A 2010 survey presented data that suggests women do double the hours their male partner does in childcare. But this can have an impact on pay due to often reduced hours. While numbers suggest that there are more women optometrist than men, the overwhelming majority of practice owners and optometric academics are male, reinforcing the patriarchal structures that exists in many what are now considered 'female-led' industries.
Real estate: I once heard residential real estate described as a more emotions based practice, where commercial real estate is more apathetic. Maybe this is why the majority of commercial real estate agents are men? While the gender split is quite even in real estate at the moment, men still dominate in the careers as they are more commonly found in managerial and leadership positions. Additionally, even though an agents pay is based on commission, there is a significant pay gap considering the higher value properties or more often being sold by men. Particularly in real estate, there still exists this 'old boys' culture where women find it harder to access mentoring. Finally, real estate is an intense 24/7 job and when a women takes a lot of the burdens of home and family management on top of this, it leaves them less time to manage listings, ultimately reducing their commissions again.
Photography: Much of the same as above can be said about photography. There are many ground breaking achievements in photography that get disregarded due to the historical and continuing male-domination of the field. Women often report facing discrimination and lack of opportunity in this field.
