How to Throw an Unforgettable Outdoor Party with Party Hire
Outdoor celebrations are beautiful but have risks. The weather can be unpredictable. There may be lighting issues after sunset. Other logistical problems can also happen. It's important to have backup plans in place.
Instead of hoping that ruined decor won't ruin the party, rely on Party hire Brisbane. They provide weatherproof furnishings, ample lighting, and quick backup assistance. This ensures that outdoor parties go smoothly, no matter what surprises come up. Our guide helps you turn open-air venues into cozy spaces that guests will love, no matter what happens. Make sure your next outdoor party is a success. Follow these tips if you're hosting a garden tea, poolside bash, or forested reception. Equipment and rapid response teams will keep you safe.
Use Clear Outdoor Tent and Marquee Rentals
Party hire Brisbane provides shelter from the elements. You can use them for garden luncheons or lakeside receptions. Outdoor tents have multiple uses. They protect against unexpected weather and can be used to attach decorations like flower garlands, lighting fixtures, and entry signage. These decorations should be placed away from walkways. Choose commercial-grade tents and cleared flooring for larger parties. These are sturdier and can handle heavier furniture setups or dancing configurations. Avoid DIY pop-up versions as they may collapse during the excitement. Protective installations help maintain ideal atmospheric conditions for joyful connections.
Outfit with Weatherproof Furniture Materials
Use Table and chair hire with strong aluminum or steel frames for outdoor furniture that can handle wet conditions. Look for sets that use water-resistant mesh, vinyl, or acrylic fabrics for the upholstery. Think about renting items with adjustable legs. These legs can adapt to uneven lawns or paver layouts. They help prevent wobbling and keep things balanced. You can use roll-out flooring in muddy areas to create a stable and clean platform. This will prevent sinking and provide a smooth surface for everything to sit on. Keep key pieces like registry and gift tables covered when not in use to protect them from damage and ensure they look great in photos. Choose practical options that can handle unpredictable outdoor conditions for ongoing comfort.
Illuminate nighttime setups beautifully.
Party hires need proper lighting to create a festive mood after sunset. Hang string lights in a zigzag pattern above the tent to create a warm and cozy atmosphere when it gets dark. Add colorful uplighting packs to the sides of the tent to enhance the hanging strands. This will create a beautiful diffusion effect and can also be used to wash buildings with color. Lampposts are placed strategically to prevent dark areas between seats and dance zones. Rent quiet generators to ensure sufficient power access. These generators will run everything smoothly without tripping breakers. Pro lighting concepts can enhance visual appeal and safety by preventing hazards as natural light diminishes. The ambiance creates a magical evening under the stars.
Have Backup Plans and Support On-Call
Parties can have unexpected problems like gusty winds or downpours. These problems need quick decisions to keep the celebrations going smoothly. Before your event, talk to your event hire Brisbane provider about different situations that could happen. This will help establish plans for moving indoors, adding sidewalls to tents for more protection, replacing damaged items quickly, or other important solutions that may be needed. Make sure staff can be reached easily during events. Provide direct hotlines for quick responses if needed to ensure guests are cared for. Get quick access to professional guidance and equipment replacement resources. This will help you handle weather-related or other issues during the celebrations.
Contact Glow Wild party hire experts in Brisbane for premium rentals and quick assistance in keeping outdoor events lively, no matter what surprises may arise.

Commercial Cleaning is an Investment Not Expense:
Your employees can be your biggest asset if you take care of them properly. Your office is like a marketing strategy for selling the idea (your business) to your employees. If you can’t execute the strategy properly, you can never sell the idea. My previous job was a lawless wasteland when it came to cleanliness. To save a couple of bucks on commercial cleaning services in Jacksonville they got an office boy who wasn’t able to do anything because, well, it was a huge building and a lot of people were working there. It was physically impossible for that one guy to be everywhere and clean things up.
Everything was untidy, filthy and there were no basic facilities, none, nada. No one bothered to clean the record rooms overflowing with clutter or supply closets acting as incubators for germs. That place took a toll on my mental and physical health. I did not want to touch anything, the absence of toilet paper made me mostly avoid using the restroom, trashcans were usually overflowing and lunch break caused pandemonium in the breakroom, as it was so disorderly. This oozing rubbish mayhem evoked feelings of irritability and hostility towards management. I did not care about the work, had almost diminished work productivity, had dangerously low morale and wanted to leave the place as soon as I entered. I ended up leaving that job.
Why Cleanliness is Important:
Companies should understand that cleanliness is not a luxury it is a necessity. Office cleaning services in Jacksonville must be hired if you don’t want your employees leaving just because of the absence of hygiene. On my current job cleanliness is taken very seriously, office premises are always clean, employee desks are cleaned regularly, trashcans never fill up over a certain level as janitor empties them regularly, there is always toilet paper in restrooms and kitchen areas for employees is sparkling. In addition to regular cleaning, there is a scheduled commercial cleaning every week. Floors are scrubbed and washed with a pressure wash, carpets are steamed, record and supply closets are arranged, heavy furniture is moved to clean underneath, ceilings are cleaned, windows are washed and cleaned and breakroom is sanitized.
Impact on employees:
I feel almost loyal to the company and have no intention of leaving anytime soon. Even if I get a better job offer I might consider turning it down because of excellent office facilities I have on my current job. The clean and tidy office premises instantly lift up your mood and work productivity skyrockets. This clean office makes me feel like being on NZT (as my OCD is satisfied) with heightened senses. The place gives me the motivation to get up in the morning and get me excited for work. A clean office actually helps me concentrate on work and not on my escape plan to leave the dumpster (the previous job) and I have better workplace relations with my co-workers.
Commercial cleaning should never be ignored to save some money as it will cost you way more in the long run when your employees start leaving after smaller periods and you have to hire new people (recruiting new people costs a lot of money). Invest in a trustworthy, experienced, reliable and professional office cleaning service in Jacksonville, Benin Cleaning is exactly the kind of cleaning service you need for your offices and they have the best rates with affordable packages.

What to look for in a Commercial Cleaning Service:
Cleanliness is an important part of being human. Clean surroundings are it your home or offices are vital for physical and mental health. We all can clean our houses ourselves or hire a maid to do it for us, commercial cleaning, on the other hand, is a whole different dimension of cleaning. Post Offices are in large commercial buildings with many people coming in and out daily. It is very difficult for one or two janitors to clean such huge places with so many varieties of services to clean. Hiring a commercial cleaning service can be a game-changer in office cleaning. While selecting a cleaning service for your workplace there are certain things that you should keep in mind.
Experience and professionalism:
Select a commercial service with expansive experience in the cleaning industry. Check for the reviews of their previous services and judge the level of professionalism their employees possess.
Employee Training and screening:
A good commercial cleaning company selects its employees after they have gone through proper training and screening processes. For commercial janitorial services, a certain amount of physical fitness is mandatory; not anyone who does not fulfill the basic criteria for physical strength should be hired. Also, check if the company takes care of its employees.
Quality of equipment:
For the safety of both the cleaning staff and the people in the building being cleaned, high quality and modern equipment should be used by the cleaning services.
Liability Insurance:
Check if the company is fully insured and registered. Select a commercial cleaning service in Jacksonville Florida only if they are insured and registered. Unregistered companies can unleash havoc in your workplace with their malpractice.
Types of services offered:
Every cleaning company has a list of services they provide, go through that list and select the one that offers all the cleaning services you require. Common commercial cleaning services include:
maintenance
sanitation and disinfection of bathrooms
carpet/rug cleaning
trash disposal
cleaning of the vents
event preparations
cleaning venues after an event
post-construction cleaning
power wash (parking areas, patios)
Cleaning Break rooms
Maintaining, sweeping, stripping and buffing floors
Dusting
Mirror cleaning
Window cleaning
Industries served:
What kind of facilities and types of commercial buildings they can clean. Most commercial cleaning services in Jacksonville, Florida covers a wide variety of industries e.g. healthcare, religious buildings, shopping malls, parks, educational institutes, regular offices, event venues, banks etcetera.
Customized Cleaning plans:
Select a cleaning service that can offer you customized plans according to your cleaning needs and not just a basic package.
The number of previous customers:
Check how many offices and the business they are already working for. A reliable commercial cleaner would already be working for a number of the firm.
Online reviews:
Technology is your best friend while running a background check on any cleaning service. Check for the online reviews, it will give a clear picture about what to expect from a certain company.
Reference:
If the cleaning service you are thinking about hiring were reliable and professional, they would be able to provide references and testimonials from their previous or current clients.
Green Cleaning practices:
Select a company that believes in leaving this planet a better place for future generations and practices green Cleaning i.e. does not use bleach and uses environment-friendly products.

M.E.R.C.s - Faces, Places, & Memories
8-01-890 AR
The android booted up as the sun blared through the wide patio windows of her home. The morning air was already filled with the usual clamor of the Lake Hope docks, even though the noise was hampered by the downturn in work caused by the weekend. Even before all three of her cameras activated she could already hear the raucous squawking of lakegulls as they bickered with each other over morsels and garbage. The weather was clear, and it looked like it would remain that way all day.
Lucky! sat up from her recharging position and disconnected her power cable. The cat that had been napping next to her, Chef, was woken up by the android’s movements. The smoky gray creature stretched and yawned, he loved basking in the warm sun. Normally Lucky! powered down and layed on her side while she recharged at night on a rollout futon in the middle of the front room, and Chef usually joined her. After stowing the power cable under the couch she stood up and looked out the window while she ran a quick diagnostic and stretched her synthmuscles. It was another wonderful day in Newland City, and one that the android was looking forward to in particular.
The android went about her morning routine, getting her cat some food and water, as well as doing some dusting before making sure that the spare room was clean and ready in case she ended up having a friend over. Lucky! wasn’t inviting anyone over, but it was always good to be ready in case one of her organic friends needed a place to stay for the night. After dusting the spare room as well as the shrine room she turned on the dehumidifier and closed the doors, Chef had no business in those rooms, after all.
Before heading out for the day Lucky! made sure that the cat door on her front door was open, and that she had her wallet along with her instant camera. She was ready to make the day a wonderful one.
***
As the android lightly jogged down the stairs that led to her tiny lakeside apartment she passed her neighbors. Even though Lucky! was usually the talkative type she barely gave a proper “hello!” to the young chimera couple as she passed them and their three children. She usually loved spending time with the Matthews, but today she had a schedule to keep, and nothing could stop her from being on time. She hesitated for a half-second as all three of the children waved at her and greeted her with a “hi Auntie Lucky!”, but she was compelled onwards. Still, she gave a fond wave back as she kept descending the stairs down to the concrete walkways next to the docks.
Lucky!’s legs were a marvel of engineering, and her constant use of them proved just how well manufactured she was. Honudato Industries had made her as a first generation labor android back in 518, and she was still trucking along, even after almost four centuries. Her legs were simple, bulky, and had a number of redundant systems that had kept the android moving for all these years, and she would sometimes brag about their quality when given the chance. Though they were nowhere near as articulated as later models would be, their lack of complexity also gave Lucky! an advantage in replacing broken down parts that were rare for other androids..
The jogging took her from the lakeside Wincoos Sector and into the neighboring Eugence Commercial Sector. Eugence was mostly composed of an open air, but roofed, mall that Lucky! frequented. The android was always amazed at what organics sold, and how often inventory changed in the mall. Not just food changed, it was also the clothing, electronics, toys, and all sorts of other things that changed month to month. She’d seen plenty in her time in Newland, but it rarely felt like she ever saw the exact same thing twice.
When Lucky! neared the edge of the Eugence Sector she realized that the exit she had planned on taking was blocked off by a police cordon. The Twentyfour/7 store at the end of the block had been broken into, with a number of new bullet holes and a large amount of broken glass telling a lot of the story. With a jolt of Lucky! realized that her friend Peter should have been on duty for the Saturday morning shift. The android broke her pace to approach the scene, getting the attention of one of the federal police officers keeping watch.
“Yeah? What is it, ma’am?” asked the officer, obviously not too invested in conversing with the android.
“My friend! A devilkin named Peter! He should have been working here this morning! Do you know if he’s OK?” returned Lucky!, her optics wide with concern.
“Well,” said the officer trying to stifle a bit of a laugh before continuing, “you definitely don’t have anything to worry about then, he made it out just fine. The two who tried to rob the shop, though, they’re dead meat.”
“Oh thank goodness!” said Lucky!, already turning about to take a different route, “Thank you so so much mister officer!”
***
Lucky! barely made it aboard the 11:33 At Morning bus that went along the 77 route. The bus driver had kindly waited for her when he had seen the android approaching the bus stop at full tilt, and after she deposited her two silver pieces the android sat down on the bench at the rear of the bus. Her wide frame took up roughly two seats, and while she hated being impolite and imposing herself, it was simply a reality of her size.
The bus ride was a bit long, but Lucky! amused herself by people watching and observing the cityscape outside of the vehicle pass by. The people she saw come and go were always interesting, to say the least. There were humans, devilkin, chimera, and even a few other androids in the mix of people that came and went as the bus made its way from West Santa Free to the Northern part of the zone. On her journey Lucky! saw a number of heavily augmented, obviously Vatinsaran men get on and speak in Pythonian at one another while they were onboard. She overheard something about “cleaning house” that implied it would involve a bit more than sweeping and mopping, and the android decided it would be in her best interests to tune out whatever else they were going to say. She certainly didn’t live as long as she had by being nosy.
The bus stopped in some habitation sector and the Vatinsarans got off the bus, as a new, assorted group of people got on the bus. Lucky! couldn’t recall the name of the sector off the top of her database, but the bus became a lot more crowded as it made a few stops in the sector, with most of the seats becoming occupied. She soon found herself sitting next to a devilkin mother who looked a bit tired, but happy to have found a seat. The woman sat with her younger child on her lap and the older one sat in the seat next to her. Lucky! guessed that the little one was around three years of age, while the older one looked to be around five. She gave the young boy a little wave, and did her best to smile with her cameras.
The child seemed a bit confused, and turned his head away before burying his face in his mother’s chest. The woman tutted a little and hugged him before turning to Lucky!. The woman had vibrant, long red hair and swept back horns, and the corners of her face were touched by patches of ruby scales. Her build was motherly, much like Lucky!’s, though the android was a good bit larger than the devilkin woman.
“I’m sorry, he’s just a bit shy, he’s at that age you know?” she said, apologizing a bit timidly.
“No no, I get it. I’ve helped my friends with their little ones plenty of times,” Lucky! said happily, “Had to raise a few too, it’s why I’m as soft as I am.”
Saying that she poked herself in her synthflesh chest and stomach, to emphasize the point. The android did look the part of a mother.
The devilkin woman looked mildly surprised, “Really?”
“Oh, yeah, I’m on the way to see one of my daughters right now,” said Lucky!, pride swelling in her voice.
Having said that Lucky! stood up. Her stop was coming up, and she began extracting herself from the bus seat and working towards the door of the crowded bus.
“Well I hope you two have a wonderful day!” exclaimed the other woman, waving back at the android as she hopped off the bus.
***
The Sacrusa Transport Sector was packed, but that was nothing new. As one of the largest transportation sectors in Santa Free it was inevitable that the place would be busy, especially on a weekend. The throngs of people were slower than normal, however, as it seemed that some sort of disturbance was slowing down the flow of travelers.
Lucky! was able to make her way through the crowds easily enough, as few people wanted to get in the way of an android that was as large as her. While there was no way that she would ever purposely bulldoze her way through a crowd, she appreciated the leeway all the same. As she left the bus platform and moved to the main terminal structure Lucky! got an idea of what exactly the source of the delays was.
At the center of the Sacrusa Building a contingent of Holy Mercenaries were heading up a seemingly unhelpful and disruptive search that was slowing movement through the building to a crawl. Traffic through the center was stopped as a hulking labor android, who made Lucky! look small, stopped travelers and a Divine priest android, used a scanner device to go over swathes of the crowd.
Lucky hadn’t the faintest idea what the Holy Mercenaries were looking to find, but she waited her turn to be scanned and pass through the M.E.R.C.s’ blockade. The crowd seemed impatient, but the Divinists were well armed, and the huge android was quite intimidating. The line moved slowly, too slowly for Lucky! who was becoming increasingly worried that she would be late for the meeting time she had set.
A yell came from the android priest with the Holy Mercenaries, “Accion, we’ve got one!”
The huge android herding the crowds suddenly left them be, crossing the floor in a moment to tackle a one-armed devilkin in the masses of Newlanders. The man barely had time to react before the mercenary was grabbing him by the arm, hoisting him up and forcing him to point his hand up at the ceiling.
“Got him!” cried out the android.
A pair of Holy Mercenaries, bedecked in their iconic white coats, parted the crowd with their drawn weapons. One was a tall, thin man with platinum blonde hair, a swarthy skin tone, and a drawn laser sword, the other an almost equally tall, authoritative equine chimera with a shotgun. Lucky got out of their way and used the scene unfolding as her chance to get past the mercenary’s cordon, skirting around the edge of the open floor they had claimed. It seemed like the M.E.R.C.s were too busy apprehending this one-armed devilkin to notice her squeeze by the sidelines.
The apprehended man was frantically yelling “Die!” over and over again while he was manhandled by the mercenaries, before Lucky! heard the swing of a laser sword which was met by shocked gasps, screams, and the furious, pained yelling of the captured devilkin. She knew better than to look back at this point, besides she needed to hurry if she was going to catch the train to the Camison Sector.
Lucky! pushed her way through the crowd a bit more aggressively, now using her size to her advantage. As much as she hated causing a fuss she was now much more worried that she was going to miss her train. It was going to leave in less than half a minute, and the trains in Newland never waited for anyone. As she shoved her way through the crowd with repeated cries of “sorry”, Lucky eventually made it to the platform just in time to see the doors of her train close and watch the cars leave the platform behind.
The android stomped her foot down in frustration, hard. The tile beneath her cracked, and she loosed a static growl of frustration. The next train that would go by the Camison Sector wouldn’t come for another half an hour, and she’d be late by then. Lucky cursed the Holy Mercenaries and Newland’s transportation department. This delay was grinding her gears and she was running low on patience.
Trying to salvage the situation she morosely walked over to the wall bedecked with guides to transit routes and maps of the Santa Free metro lines. She looked between the Sacrusa and Camison Sector. There were about only two sectors in between them, and while it was the usual mixture of dense, urban terrain, Lucky! had made much longer delivery routes in shorter time.
Lucky! took the stairs back out of the street, passing by the spot where the Holy Mercenaries had been but a few minutes ago. They were all gone, having only left the smell of charred flesh and a bad impression on the crowded Newlanders making their way through the station.
***
Lucky! was doubled over, letting her power supply cool down. She had pulled the back of her shirt up, letting her heat exchange vent the built up warmth. The last thing she needed today was for her tanktop to catch on fire from sprinting through a couple of sectors.
Either my heat exchanges are losing efficiency or those two sectors were extra long, she thought to herself. She resolved to have her mechanic look them over after her next payday. The air at her destination was at least very cool, letting her reduce her heat to manageable levels in a few short minutes.
After recovering the android wandered slowly through the quiet halls, looking down each of the aisles as she passed them. A lot of people were here, or at least their remains were. Lucky! already knew where she was heading, but she liked to dawdle at times, and take in the world around her. Plus she wasn’t late yet. There were quiet mourners all around the subterranean graveyard, and she quickly took stock of each one. They all had a deep sadness etched on their face, and even though she couldn’t express herself similarly, the android felt it somewhere in her soul.
The graveyards of the Divinists were always a little odd to Lucky! but she understood that their traditions differed a lot from Shogaian ones. Each grave was a shelf, carved into the stone wall of the site, and the deceased were interred on the shelf, with a silver “lid” covering the shelf. The lid was graven with the deceased’s name, a eulogy, and whatever else those who survived them felt was necessary. Supposedly this method kept their bodies from reanimating, and the android had certainly seen no evidence to the contrary.
As she traveled down one particular lane Lucky noted her internal clock, and was relieved to find that she was not, in fact, late. She approached one of the graves and kneeled before the waist high shelf.
Lailah Pierce 834 AR - 864 AR We will miss you, and little Morgan will always be told how wonderful her mother was.
Lucky! touched the engraved silver with one of her hands. The metal of the tomb had been a bright shining silver that had reflected her mechanical visage once. Now it was dull and tarnished, but its brilliance still shone through in places. Lucky! accessed her memories of Lailah. She sadly noted how the oldest ones were almost fourty years old now.
The android pressed her cybernetic hand fully against the tomb’s plate. The woman entombed here had been just a teenager when she’d first met Lucky!. The android had made an impression on the girl with her upbeat attitude and strength as a labor model when Lailah had joined the Hope Central Cargo company as a summer job. Lucky! worked in the company’s warehouse and Lailah had learned the ropes of being a secretary for the company, and the two crossed paths occasionally, and eventually had lunch breaks together. After that summer the two had parted, and seldom saw one another for a few years.
That changed once Lailah finished her schooling and began working at the cargo company again, now as a full time secretary for the company. Lucky! had continued working there and the two had resumed their friendship, which deepened over the many years that Lailah worked for the company. Lailah had always felt like she was the unfortunate type, but saw Lucky! as her source of good fortune, and the android was happy to have a close friend again.
Eventually Lailah had found a partner, and she was ecstatic. Lucky! had cheered her on the whole while, and even though she had never met the man, she had listened to Lailah go on about Harry for hours at a time. The two had been inseparable after a certain point, and Lucky! once more saw less of her friend, until she was informed of the woman’s pregnancy. Lucky! felt what she assumed most mothers felt when their daughters announced that they were expecting.
Before her daughter was born, disaster struck twice for Lailah. The first was Harry being slain in his mercenary work, which made Lailah grieve for most of her pregnancy. She had recently lost her own parents in the last couple of years, so Lucky! spent as much time as she could comforting her dear friend and helping her with the challenges of pregnancy.
The second disaster struck when Morgan was born. Lailah had passed away due to complications with the birth. Lucky! had been utterly devastated. Her closest friend had disappeared from the Ashlands behind the closed doors of a hospital, and she had never gotten to say goodbye. It was far from the first time that Lucky! had lost someone close, it came with the territory of living for a span well beyond any organic person, but it never stopped hurting. All of that pain had been twenty five years ago, but as she closed and compressed the memory files the sensation of hurt was still just as real now as it had been back then. The android slumped forwards a bit, her hand still on the grave’s plate. Lailah’s body was here, but Lucky’s friend simply did not exist any more.
“Mom?”
Lucky turned to the source of the voice. A woman was standing at the end of the aisle, not wanting to interrupt the android’s private moment.
“Oh, Morgan… hi dear.” said Lucky, her vocoder warbling with emotion.
The human woman came up to the android and wrapped her arms around her second mother. Lucky! hugged back, glad to have someone else be here with her.
“I was almost late, but I guess that I rushed here for nothing, huh?”
Morgan nodded, looking into Lucky!’s blue cameras with her own green eyes.
“I’ve been so busy at work lately, I’m sorry that it’s been a couple of months.”
Morgan slowly left the embrace and laid the flowers she had brought on the shelf’s lip. Lucky! watched as she kneeled down and formed a triangle with her fingers and thumbs, praying in the Divinist fashion before the tomb. After a few moments she rose and hugged the android again.
“Let’s have a great day today, alright mom?”
***
The pair staggered back to Lucky’s home well after dark, with Lucky! moving Morgan in a fireman carry most of the way back. Their day out had indeed been great, with the two doing some shopping before going for a night out on the town. Morgan had drank and eaten plenty, with Lucky! paying for it all, and the two had had a lively time, going from bar to bar, dancing, chatting and enjoying the nightlife of Newland. The android was happy to fund her daughter’s fun, she had been saving up for a few weeks just for the occasion.
Still, it was after midnight, and Morgan wasn’t the most experienced drinker, so Lucky! had taken the responsibility of getting her favorite human home safe and sound. The journey was a bit long, but Morgan had been up and stumbling alongside Lucky! for most of their journey back. Chef was pleased to see Lucky! again, and was extra excited to see Morgan as well. He meowed at Lucky! and came to sniff Morgan as she was laid on the bed in the spare room.
Morgan clung to Lucky! for a bit as she drunkenly drifted off to sleep, murmuring something about the android being so warm and soft. Lucky! felt like she was looking after a child again, but drunk people always made her think that. Eventually she tucked Morgan in and carried Chef out of the room with her, letting her beloved daughter get some rest.
Lucky! brought the cat to the kitchen and fed him some tinned food. Chef chowed down happily, and Lucky! took off to the shrine room. Quietly, the bulky android opened up the doors of her wardrobe-sized shrine.
The interior and the inside of the doors of the synthwood shrine were covered with photos. Each one was taped or pinned onto the shrine’s interior, and every single one portrayed a different person. There were people of every different species that had walked the Ashlands since Lucky! was first ensouled, and they were from nearly every corner of the world. All of the photos had been taken by Lucky!’s hand, and while the cameras had changed over the years, the pictures stayed as they were, frozen moments of the android’s life with people who meant a lot to her.
The android’s cameras scanned across the mass of pictures, remembering the faces, people, and places.
Mira Olyanoff. An Everrnyyan girl who was exploring the city with her family that had come down the Carrion River to move to Newland the other month.
Alexander Hunt. The Newlander chimera man she’d worked alongside with for years at Hope Central Cargo. He’d passed away twenty years ago from chimeric health complications.
Clem Medina. The friendly Vatinsaran guy who’d done maintenance on her for most of the 700’s. He’d always remarked how easy it was to do repairs on Lucky!.
Danny Baxter. The Arkgomery man who had sheltered the android during the Year of Blood. Lucky! had had a hard time understanding him through his Arkgomerian accent at first, but whenever she heard someone talking with that tinge to their voice she fondly recalled Danny.
Samantha Carter. When Lucky! had been living in New Yark for a few years back in the 810’s the redhead had been the android’s room mate. They had butted heads a number of times, and they had eventually parted ways, but Lucky! never stopped thinking about the wonderful times she had had with her on the New Yarkipelago
Chu Bell. The wastelander whose family had come to live in Newland from the Khurganda Territory. He had told Lucky! so many stories about the Nomahdi and the world beyond the walls of Newland City. Even if those stories were two hundred years old she never stopped marveling at how wide the Ashlands were and how strange life was outside of Newland.
Lian Dan. The Shogaian lady who had been working alongside Lucky! when she first became ensouled on Awakening Day. She’d been the one to write the “Lucky!” on her shoulderplate after the labor android had just barely been missed by a falling cargo container filled with iron ore.
Lucky! stopped reminiscing to pull out some of the photo albums from the lower shelves of the shrine. She retrieved the instant photos she’d taken with her camera that evening. A few of them weren’t worth keeping as they were blurry messes, but she had gotten some decent ones of Morgan. Lucky sorted through the albums, before finding her most recent one, and another one that dated back a couple of decades.
After slotting the photos of Morgan into her newer album Lucky! opened the old album and found the pages she was looking for. Morgan looked just like Lailah did when she was around the same age, a few years before conceiving her daughter. She looked between the two and felt a conflicting mixture of love and sadness. The mother and daughter had been separated, but at the very least she got to be the bridge between them, so that they weren’t utterly torn apart by misfortune.
As Lucky! began to put away the photo albums she had a sudden realization. A picture had been sitting in her shirt since the earlier work week. She reached in and pulled it out, regarding it fondly. It was her new friend from work, Connor, the cat chimera. It was a candid picture she had taken while her co-worker was chowing down on a burger, and it made him look like an absolute savage. Connor obviously hated the picture, but it was quite funny to Lucky!. She pinned it up among the pictures of her other friends, before closing the shrine for the night, and resolving to get a better picture of the chimera on Monday.

You’re Like an Angel (Joe x Reader)
Prompt: You and Joe (You Were Never Really Here) have been casually dating for awhile. He’s let a few comments slip about his past, but nothing too revealing. Soon enough, you experience first-hand just how troubled and damaged Joe really is. Any dialogue or thoughts in italics is stuff Joe is remembering from his past.
Warnings: Cursing, descriptions of death and blood. Mentions of abuse and trauma. Bad coping mechanisms and suicidal thoughts.
A/N: I’m not sure how many will even read this fic since the movie isn't that popular. But I spent some time on this one. So, maybe give it a read? I tried to keep Joe in character as much as I could.
60, 59, 58, 57, 56,
Joe's fingers gripped the pill bottle like it was his only lifeline. His eyes ran over the dosage information before flickering up to the cashier. He could see the young man's mouth moving, but no words were coming out. The boy held up a white baggie containing the rest of the medication. He scanned the barcode of each bottle like Joe was his only customer for the day, and he wanted to make it last.
Other New York residents piled behind him, but he kept his eyes trained on the cashier's movements. He could feel the glares of everyone else bore into the back of him as they waited.
Stand up straight.
Joe's fist clenched around the orange bottle, the words of his late father ringing so loud in his ears he didn't hear the small crack of the plastic. His other hand carelessly brushed over his tied-up hair before wiping off the beads of sweat sticking to his face.
Stand up! Only pussies and little girls slouch!
Joe slammed his hands onto the table in front of him, his breathing coming out in ragged puffs.
"What?" Joe asked the cashier whose mouth hadn't moved since the outburst.
"I- I said your total is 18.50."
He dropped a twenty onto the table and ripped the bag from the guy's hand, rushing to get away from the prying eyes of other shoppers. He was out the door before he was handed the change.
55, 54, 53, 52, 51,
"Mom, I'm back," Joe said to his mother as soon as he came through the front door.
"Joe, come here, come here," she said from her spot in the recliner.
"What is it?"
"Look at the TV," she pointed. "Our song's on."
'A, You're Adorable' played quietly in the background of a children's commercial, as his mother hummed softly to the lyrics.
"Yeah, it is," Joe agreed before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her up. "Let's get you to bed."
"Janice loves this song. You should tell her we heard it."
Joe froze at the mention of his exes name. Janice. Before her, he had tried to date several women, all of which ended up leaving him. For years, he found himself to be incapable of maintaining a long-term relationship. Every girl he kissed, touched, or felt connected to—they all thought they could change him—fix him. He knew he was incapable of being fixed. Janice was different; she was there for him until his plan to escape the outside world, and all it's horror eventually pushed her away. It was his fault.
"Mom, I don't talk to Janice," Joe sighed. "C'mon, let's go to bed."
While he helped his mother up the stairs and into her bed, his mind drifted to you. He hadn't mentioned anything about you to her yet because he knew it wasn't serious. You both had been on a couple of dates, and even had a couple more planned, but the odds of it lasting weren't high. So, Joe kept his mouth shut. The last thing he needed was another woman for his mom to question him about.
50, 49, 48, 47, 46,
Once Joe was back in his bedroom, he pulled out his phone and sat at the end of the bed. His fingers searched his contacts for your name, while his other hand grasped his knee. The line only rang once before you picked up.
"Hey, I didn't expect to hear from you tonight," you said on the other end.
"I didn't expect to call tonight," he retorted.
"Okay," you said. "Your call wasn't unwanted, though."
The line went silent. Joe wasn't sure why he called at such a late hour; if he was honest, he really just wanted to hear the sound of your voice.
When he didn't respond, you spoke softly into the phone. "How was your day?"
"Good," he lied, letting his hand run over his beard. "How was yours?"
"It was okay, just busy."
"Tell me about it," he said before laying back onto the bed. He closed his eyes and let the recollection of your day soothe him for a moment's notice.
"And then, to top it all off," you said, finally nearing the end of your story. "I'm at the store, right? I turn around and see a dead girl lying on the floor."
Joe's eyes snapped open. "You saw what?"
"I saw a little girl pouting on the floor," you repeated. "I have never related to anyone so much."
He exhaled. His psyche was playing tricks on him once again. Images of dead bodies struck his mind like lightning. Kids upon kids laid lifeless in transporting vehicles—all the people he couldn't save from the savagery of sex trafficking and other violent crimes.
"Joe? Is everything okay?"
What pained him even more were the kids who screamed for help as he stood watching, helpless against the gun to his head. Jobs would go wrong, and he was forced to admit to himself, once again, that he failed.
Help me! Please help me! Don't let them take me again!
They'd cry out to him in such anguish, but he could only watch. He was as useless then as he was for his mother during his father's spells of anger.
"Hey," you said. "Are you still there?"
"I've got to go," Joe hastily hung up the phone, not waiting for your response. He threw the phone onto the bed and got up to pace around the room. With every step, a new face plagued his mind—tears dripped from the kids' eyes as they begged him to keep them safe. He rarely did.
45, 44, 43, 42, 41,
Joe moved to the closet where his arms tugged on an old, mucky box full of plastic bags until they all came floating out onto the floor. He slid his back down the wall of the closet until he was sitting—bags all around him. With shaky hands, he pulled a loose sack over his head, clutching it hard enough around his face to cut off his oxygen.
"Where the hell is Joseph?"
His father's voice rung out through the household. Joe carried his little feet across the floor as fast as he could, hoping to get to his hiding place before his father caught sight of him. At nearly 10 years old, Joe could identify at least three spots in the house where his father never searched for him—cabinets, under the bed, and his closet. He often opted for the closet, where he'd pull grocery bags or plastic dry-cleaning holders over his head to drown out the noise of his mother's wails.
"Stop! Stop it! You're hurting me," she'd cry out. Little Joe pushed his hands up against his ears so tightly, they'd be red for hours after the incident.
He was scared of his father back then, and so he let his mother take all the abuse. Had he not been hiding, he would have been the one facing his father's wrath.
"You're weak. Weak, weak, weak," he repeated to himself like a mantra. He knew it was only a matter of time before you figured that out and left him like the rest.
40, 39, 38, 37, 36,
When morning came, he awoke from a thud sounding out downstairs. He stayed in bed a minute longer, wishing his blanket would swallow him whole. Without any luck, he pulled back the covers and went downstairs to find the source of the noise.
Stepping foot into the kitchen, the first thing he saw was his mom's head lying still against the hardwood table. A broken bowl of cereal was turned on its side, leaking milk that ran from the dish to the end of the surface. His eyes followed the droplets as they hit the ground, joining a stream of red liquid to create a pink puddle on the floor.
Joe's breath came out in fast shudders as he approached his mother's figure. He pulled her face up to see a plastic piece that was missing from the bowl lodged in her neck. His fingers grasped the broken part, yanking it out in one quick motion; he watched as blood shot out in spirts, covering his clothes before he could make a move to back up.
He turned around after laying his mom's head back on the table and walked slowly out of the room. He kept his steps light and his ears peeled for any trace of movement in the house. His head snapped towards the living room when he heard what sounded like a vase fall. He rounded the corner to see a tall, slim-figured man dressed in black, looking through a pile of receipts on the coffee table.
While passing the cabinet, Joe grabbed his hammer that he kept locked away, and with one quick swing to the head, the intruder was left bleeding out on the floor.
"Fu-fuck," the wounded man choked out. "Don't kill me. Don't kill me."
"I think I already have," Joe said, bending down to lay the head of the hammer on the man's stomach. "Why did you kill my mom?"
"I was told to! I- I only work for somebody, man. I don't know anything about her. I don't have anything against you."
"Who sent you?"
The man kept quiet as quick and panicked gasps left his mouth. Joe ran the end of the hammer over the man's stomach, light enough to tickle him, before pulling it back and slamming it into the guy's stomach.
"Who fucking sent you?"
"Carl. C-Carl.”
"Carl, who?"
"Carl Alcott," the dying man coughed out.
"The club owner? Fuckin' fuck," Joe dropped the hammer, and his hands slammed into the ground with force. He knew that exchange from a week ago was going to come back and bite him in the ass. Influential people don't like to be messed with.
"He's- he's- comin' for," the man's words ran together as his breath started to leave his lungs.
"For me?"
"No- no," he said. "For- for your girl."
35, 34, 33, 32, 31,
As soon as intruder took his last breath, he stuffed his body into a trash bag along with his mom's and drove them to the lakeside. As he left the city and got further into the country, his mind started to wander to you.
For your girl. Your girl.
His hands gripped the steering wheel so tight with shaking arms, he was swerving in and out of the lane. His tires screeched every time he raced around the corner, desperate to get the remnants of the bodies out of his backseat.
When he went on dates with you the few times before, he had briefly opened up about his past. He thinks he can recall saying something about a rude father, or his time in the marines and the police force. He may have even let it slip that he's seen piles upon piles of decaying corpses. He never once mentioned his new work in fear of scaring you off.
As soon as he dropped his job in law enforcement, he sentenced himself to a lonely life. The small number of friends he had, plus any relationship he conjured up, fell apart. He abandoned any wish to be happy since he couldn't protect any of the people who came near him; his mother was a testimony to that.
You were something else, though. He had bumped into you on a whim, not expecting your smile and personality to slam into his heart as it did. He agreed to one date, trying to escape the bleakness of his everyday life. But for some unknown reason, he kept coming back for more. One date turned into two, three, and four; before he knew it, you were basically his girlfriend—without the title, of course.
When he pulled up to the lakeside, he dragged both bodies out to the small bridge that ran from side to side. He attached each of them to a cinderblock and pushed them one-by-one over the edge.
"I hope you rest easier here than you did in life, mom," he said into the air.
He wondered what it would be like to attach a block to his own foot and drown with the rest of them. He wondered how that would feel—how you would feel.
He couldn't do it though. His suicidal story that he contemplated often was pushed aside in the past because he couldn't leave his mother. Now that she was gone, it appeared to be the perfect moment. But, again, he had somebody holding him back.
You were being threatened with the ultimate price, and he'd be damned if he let you suffer for something you had no part in. He was determined for once in his life to save someone important to him; he would not let you be another statistic in his head.
30, 29, 28, 27, 26,
He arrived at your apartment after going back to his and changing into a blue long-sleeve shirt, jeans, and charcoal vest. He knocked three times against the door and waited.
"Joe," you said, looking surprised to see him on the other side.
"I came to see if you wanted to go out right now, like a little date."
"Oh, sure," you smiled, and Joe couldn't help but offer you a small smile in return. "Let me just grab some money."
"I've got it. You know I've got it."
"You paid the last date," you reminded him. "You said I could next time."
He sighed, running his hand through his long locks. If he was going to get through this meal with a good conscience, he had to be the one to cover it. He knew your relationship was coming to a stop tonight. For your safety, he decided it was time to end the connection between you two—even if it'd hurt like hell.
"Please, just let me pay," he said.
"Okay," you agreed before shutting your door and joining your hand with his. "You look good today."
As soon as he got to his car, he pushed your body gently against it before capturing your mouth with his.
"I was going to tell you that," he said in between kisses. "You always look good—so perfect. And you’re all mine tonight."
You hummed against his lips, moving your hands up from his soft belly to his strong arms. "Not that I don't love this, but is everything okay? You're not usually this"
You trailed off, and he backed up only slightly, letting your hands fall from his arms so he can intertwine them with his own.
"I'm fine, sweetheart," he assured you while pulling open the car door for you to get inside. Once you were secured, he went around and got in himself.
You smiled at him as he took off driving. "Where are we headed to?"
He took his eyes off the road for a second to smirk at you. "I'm not telling you."
"No fair," you pouted jokingly. "At least give me a hint."
"Not a fucking chance," he laughed—a real genuine sound—which is something he never does. You chuckled along with him before comfortable silence fills the car as you drive to the destination Joe picked out.
25, 24, 23, 22, 21,
He parked his car in a small parking lot and got out to open your door, mumbling something about 'keeping your eyes closed.' When you're told to open them, you're met with a worn-down diner that looks to be in the middle of nowhere. The windows are tended with the words 'Maggie's Place' scrawled across the glass. The building is painted red and white, with checkered lines running down the sides—a design that was quite popular in the '60s.
"Wow," you said, not knowing what else to say.
"I know it's not a fancy date restaurant, but my mom used to bring me here. This place is important to me."
"No, it's perfect," you told him, honestly. "I love it."
He nods in relief before leading you inside. You're quickly seated by a young waitress who looks to be no more than 17. Joe ordered a coffee while you looked over the menu for something you'd want.
After you're done ordering, the waitress turned to Joe. "Is there anything else you'd like, sir?"
He stared blankly at her, trying to remember where he'd seen her familiar face. "What?"
"Would you like anything else?"
He shook his head and watched as she slowly walked away, staring at him the whole time she's departing. He knows that's not likely to be accurate; she probably left to the kitchen without a single glance back. His mind, however, sees her gaping at him—just like the other girls he couldn't save.
He exhaled. "What the fuck are we doing? What are we doing?"
"What do you mean?"
Your voice broke his delusion, and he snapped his head back to your face, which is sporting a concerned look.
"Nothing, nothing. Sorry."
"Don't apologize," you said. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"Talk about what?"
"I don't know," you shrugged. "Whatever has been on your mind since I met you. You know, you hung up on me last night?"
"I'm sorry," he repeated.
"Stop apologizing, Joseph."
"Don't call me that," he barked at you, his fist clenching the side of booth tightly.
You snapped your mouth shut at Joe's harsh tone. He had been angry before; you'd seen it first-hand but never directed towards yourself.
"My father used to call me that," he muttered, his words still sounding loud in the otherwise quiet diner. "I don't like it."
"I won't do it again," you promise. "How's your mom?"
He paused, fully prepared to go with a lie. As he met your eyes though, he couldn't will himself to deceive you further. Instead, he shook his head while taking in a deep breath through his nose.
"Actually, she passed away."
Your eyes widened. "What? When?"
"This morning."
"Oh my God, Joe," you breathed out, your mouth opening and closing, trying to find some way to console him. "That's- I'm so sorry."
"It's okay," he said softly. "She'll be happier now."
"How—if you don't mind me asking—did it, you know, happen?"
Memories of earlier flooded his head--the blood oozing from his mother's body like a river; he could almost see it on his hands now.
"In her sleep," Joe mumbled, hoping that was satisfactory enough to stop the probing. He didn't want you to find out, especially during your last date—not that you knew it was the last.
"I know she meant a lot to you," you said, placing a comforting hand on his. "She would have been proud of you for putting yourself out there with me. I'm just sad I never got to meet her."
"She would have liked you," Joe admitted with certainty. "Probably a little too much. She'd have you singing 'A, you're adorable' in no time."
"A, you're adorable. B, you're so beautiful, C, you're a cutie full of charms," you sang, playfully.
"D, you're delightful and, B, you're exciting and, F, you're a feather in my arms," he sang back, smiling towards the end.
The waitress soon delivered the food to your table. You and Joe ate in silence, with a few comments made here and there about the food or something that popped into your heads. After paying the bill and leaving a rather sizable tip, he drove you back to your house.
20, 19, 18, 17, 16,
Neither of you wanted the date to finish, especially Joe, who knew he wouldn't see you again.
He dropped you off, but before leaving to walk into your place, you asked, "do you want to come in?"
He nodded. "I have something to talk to you about, actually."
"Oh, well. I wasn't inviting you in to talk, but we can do that too," you joke.
The joke falls flat—Joe was too busy worrying about how you were going to take the break-up. Not seeing him chuckle, or even offer a smile, you became concerned.
He followed you inside to your living room, where he sat on the couch while you went to the kitchen to grab a drink. He was on his feet in seconds when he heard the sound of a glass shatter on the floor. When he got to you, you were standing in the middle of the room. A man with a different build, yet dressed similarly to the one who murdered his mother, stood behind you—a gun pressed up against your skull.
Joe quickly looked you over to see if the man had hurt you yet. Besides your trembling body and sporadic breathing, you looked to be physically fine.
"Let go of her," Joe spoke calmly.
"No, I don't think I will," the man replied.
"J-Joe," you stuttered. "What's going on? Who is this?"
"Stay calm, baby," Joe spoke softly to you. "It's going to be okay."
The man behind you laughed. "Oh, Joey. If only you would have been in here sooner. Just like all those other times, huh?"
The room fell quiet; all that was heard was the air leaving your mouth.
"The laws of man, they don't apply," the gunman sang while smiling. "When blood gets in a woman's eye."
Stand up! Only pussies and little girls slouch!
Don't let them take me again!
Where the hell is Joseph?
For your girl.
The memories wouldn't stop screaming in his head—every bad thing said to him from birth until now. The urge to leave and hide in his closet was unbearable; his hands scrambled to his ears, trying to stop the voices that were getting louder and louder.
"Joe," you yelled out as the gunman took advantage of his opportunity and started to drag you out of the kitchen. "Joe!"
You struggled against the larger man's clutch, trying to get an edge on him. He nearly got you to the front door before you heard a loud blast echo through the house. The guy's grip on you loosened, and you watched as he dropped to the ground.
15, 14, 13, 12, 11,
Joe's arms slide around your frame before you even notice he's there. You keep still, gawking at the body lying at your legs. His blood was seeping through his shirt, already creating a pool of red by your shoes.
You felt strong arms pulling you away from the scene, and only then did you look at Joe.
"What- what," you stumble, glancing between him and the man on the floor. "Why did-why?"
"Come on," he said softly. "Don't look at him."
Too shocked to resist, you let him lead you outside to his car. He sits you inside, placing a kiss to your forehead.
"I'll be right back," he told you. "I'm going to clean up. Y/N, listen to me. Do you hear me?"
You nod faintly.
"Please don't go anywhere," he kisses your forehead again, lingering a little longer before going back inside to wrap the body and clean the floor.
You watched him come back out fifteen minutes later, a human-shaped trash bag in his arms. You fight the urge to open the door and run for your life. You're not sure what Joe was planning to do with the man—with you.
He shoved the body in the trunk and made his way to the front seat. The silence that loomed over you both this time was not one of comfort like all those other drives before. No, this one was full of tension and emotional turmoil.
"Are you okay? Do you want a soda?"
You stayed quiet, not answering his questions. You rested your head on the window, watching as the city buildings got fewer and fewer. Joe decided it was best to take you to a small park in a country town far outside the New York City limits.
You listened to the radio, soft music by Rosie and the Originals played in the speakers.
'It's just like heaven being here with you. You're like an angel, too good to be true. But after all, I love you, I do. Angel baby, my angel baby.'
10, 9, 8, 7, 6,
It was nearing dark when Joe finally parked the car. Neither of you knew what to say or how even to start the much-needed conversation. So, you decided to take the plunge.
"Are you going to kill me now?"
Joe gaped at you like you'd just asked him what his name was—like the answer was obvious.
"Of- of course not," he stammered. "Fuck, Y/N. I would never do that."
"You just shot someone, Joe! And who the hell was that? Why were they holding a gun to my fucking head?"
"Calm down."
"Don't tell me to calm down," you cautioned, taking off your seatbelt so you could turn towards him. "What do you do for a living? How do you know people like that?"
"I rescue people," he said, and you scoffed. "I know that doesn't sound right, but it's true. I rescue missing people, usually kids."
"So, what? You're a cop?"
"Not exactly," he trails off. "I- I was sort of. Then, one day I was at a crime scene. I found a truck full of Chinese girls. They- they all had been kidnapped to be trafficked. I found them, but it was too late."
He paused, his voice cracking on his next words. "They were already dead."
The air in the car was getting heavy. You could feel tears welling up in your eyes as Joe recounted the events that led him to his current occupation.
"The man who killed my mom," he started. "Carl Alcott. He's coming for you. I don't mean to scare you, but he knows you're with me."
"Okay, so we'll leave."
Joe faltered. "You want to stay with me?"
"I do. That might seem crazy, but I do."
He considered it for a moment before shaking his head firmly. "No. You can't. This can't go on. We have to end this here before it gets too serious."
"I just saw you shoot someone," you reminded him. "It's already serious. I'm coming."
"No, Y/N! I refuse to let you be another person that I couldn't save. You have to leave alone—move very far away. You need to change your number, your bank information, everything."
"I'm not leaving you," you stated.
Joe grumbled, his mouth twitching in anger and pent up emotions. "Everyone always has! My father beat the shit outta my mom, and I just hid from him. I was too late to save those girls, and I've had too many children be ripped from my sight because I couldn't save them. I'm weak. I can't save you. I'm weak."
His whole body shook as strangled sobs escaped his lips. He brought his hands up to cover his face before he moved them down to tug off his vest and shirt. He was desperate to get out of the material that was making him feel too claustrophobic in the small car.
Once both of his tops were discarded to the back seat, you finally reached across the middle console and pulled Joe into your arms loosely. He clenched your shirt as his father's words,' only pussies and little girls slouch,' played through his mind like a broken record.
"It's okay. Let it all out," you said against his ear, rubbing a soothing circle over his back while still being mindful of his bruises and cuts. "I'm right here. I'm not leaving."
"You- you should."
"Maybe so," you said. "But I don't want to."
"You can't fix me."
"I don't want to; you're perfect the way you are. I only want to try and make you happier."
He retracted his head from your shoulder to meet your eyes. "Why?"
"I- I think I could fall in love with you," you admitted, shrugging slightly. You saw the onset of panic flash through Joe's eyes, so you quickly kept talking. "You don't have to say it back. I just wanted to tell you that."
He wiped his face of any tears and sighed. "I think I could fall in love with you too."
A smile tugged at your lips for first time since the date, and he again felt himself smiling right back.
You watched him put back on his seatbelt, and you swiftly copied his movements. "Where are we going to go now?"
"Where do you want to go?"
"I think we should probably do something about the body in the trunk."
He looked at you and laughed. "I think you're right."
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
It didn't take long to dispose of the gunman; after all, it wasn't Joe's first time. Before long, you were set out across the country to go wherever your hearts desired.
In the midst of the drive, his hand found yours across the console. And for once in his life, he didn't feel the need to run his car off the road.

Tuscan Transformation: Dubai-based VSHD Design expands its international portfolio with the completion of their first U.S. residential project – The Ranch
VSHD Design, a Dubai-based interior architecture firm specializing in residential and commercial projects, is proud to unveil a luxurious residential design within the Four Seasons Orlando Resort in Florida. With 22,000 sq. ft. this project marks the first residential undertaking of the firm in the United States.
“From the onset, we realized that we were facing numerous challenges with this project,” notes Rania Hamed, interior architect and founder of VSHD Design. “In addition to strict regional building and environmental codes, there were requirements imposed by Four Seasons Resorts to ensure that the residence blended stylistically with its neighboring properties.”
A modern Tuscan approach In approaching the external Tuscan theme exhibited by homes within the exclusive development, the challenge was to maintain some existing structural elements, while delivering on the client’s vision of a modern home that would be luxurious, yet warm, comfortable, and ideal for entertaining guests. The client envisioned a sort of boutique-style hotel environment that would provide family and friends with privacy and luxurious amenities, even in the absence of its owners. To achieve that challenging balance, Hamed embarked on a mission to modernize the external Tuscan façade, while infusing contemporary luxury into the home’s interior to align with the client’s vision.
While Tuscan architecture in its purest form embraces natural, rustic elements, VSHD Design avoided abundant use of materials such as brick and wrought iron in lieu of a modern interpretation. Gray brick overhangs positioned above the external façade’s windows and passages pay homage to Tuscan influences. Black frames of expansive French windows, certified to hurricane standards, provide contemporary contrasts to the façade’s white walls, culminating in a modern Mediterranean style that adheres to the Four Seasons aesthetic requirements.
To complement the structural design, VSHD Design developed all of the home’s outdoor spaces, beginning with its swimming pool. European limestone tiles, stylistic planters, and luxurious sunbeds from the Italian design house, Gervasoni, provide the exterior spaces with an authentic Mediterranean look and feel.
Seamless transitions While the exterior exudes modern interpretations of mandated styles and standards, VSHD Design approached the interior of the house as somewhat of a blank canvas. Working with a timber structure, as opposed to concrete columns and beams, was a new experience, however, Hamed found inspiration in the challenge.
“I saw beauty in some of the original structural elements and I wanted to maintain as many of them as possible,” she explains. “I decided to leave some of the exposed beams intact, as opposed to hiding them behind a layer of gypsum.”
Exposed wooden beams reflecting the original structure’s integrity were maintained, with layers of dark stain and black metal trim added to provide a more industrial feel. Hamed also focused on ensuring seamless continuity between the home’s interior and exterior spaces. Upon entering the house, Carrara marble flooring carries the influences inward, where Tuscan-style arches define the separation of the home’s interior spaces, reinforced by clean, modern, and slightly protruding architraves. The architraves, composed of black matte stained oak, contrast with the interior’s white walls and light gray marble flooring, providing the home’s public areas with a very contemporary look and feel. In living spaces designed for more intimate experiences, Carrara marble flooring gives way to hardwood floors.
“Marble can have a bit of a cold feel to it, particularly when framed by white ceilings and walls,” explains Hamed. “We created a transition to hardwood floors to provide certain spaces, like the living room and the study, with a much warmer ambiance.”
Boutique-style accommodations The main floor houses the master bedroom, highlighted by a luxurious contemporary décor and direct access to the adjacent pool area and outdoor shower, designed as part of VSHD’s vision of an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The master bedroom’s spa-inspired adjoining spaces include a freestanding bathtub as the centerpiece of a spacious bathroom that also features an individual toilet and shower cubicles. The bathtub is flanked by a wall of floor-to-ceiling French windows on one side and dual washbasins with custom-designed mirrors on the other. Completing the spa-like theme, a small spiral staircase leads to an upper-level gym area featuring a steam room and waterjet shower.
The spa-like feel and amenities extend to the home’s 6 upper-level guest suites, half of which offer private external access for guest stays while the owners are away. Each self-sufficient guest suite features a unique decorative style and is equipped with a mini kitchen, a small pantry, and a spa-inspired bathroom.
“The client’s brief focused on a concept where each room should have a completely different, yet thoroughly modern theme,” explains Hamed. “We incorporated Chinese, Spanish, and multiple other influences in order to provide each suite with its own distinct character and mood.”
The client’s vision of a boutique-style hotel extends to the home’s main dining room, inspired by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass. A ‘modern-retro’ black and white console from Italy contrasts against a wall panel of gold leaf wallpaper, bordered by marble. The panel’s adjacent walls are characterized by ribbed white paneling with a stained wood base, while a cloud lighting fixture from New York’s Apparatus Studio provides adds a celestial touch to the room.
Pièce de résistance In order to tie the interior spaces together, VSHD Design embarked on an ambitious plan to develop a new patio space at the center of the house to create stimulating visual links between multiple areas of the house. To separate the pool area from the patio, and to connect the master bedroom to the living spaces, the design team built an enclosed lanai with four expansive French windows on each side, which infuse the passage with natural light. The abundantly lit corridor is lined with wicker chairs, creating a fabulous reading room with the feel of an open space courtesy of pool views to the left, and patio views and greenery to the right. At the end of the passageway, a staircase to the left ascends to the second level of the home alongside floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the patio and offer views of the lanai and other external spaces.
“By blending traditional elements with a modern contemporary mix, we succeeded in achieving a contrast that works well,” notes Rania Hamed. “We didn’t want that contrast to be too soft, so the use of black and white, with Carrera marble flooring, provides the home with a strong modern-vintage look.”

Lantz’s Lakeside Plumbing & AC services has been in business for 50 years and is a trusted plumber in Lago Vista, Cedar Park, Leander, Jonestown, and surrounding areas. Our qualified, licensed plumbing technicians are experts at locating clogs and then drain cleaning and unclogging drains, water lines, and sewer lines in homes and commercial properties using advanced equipment. The first step in the drain cleaning is locating the clog(s) causing the backup. This process is done with a camera inserted in the drain. Once the clog(s) is located, the second step involves the use of a drain cleaning snake tool (or “roto-rooter”) used to dislodge the clogs and clear the affected line. If the roto-rooter is unable to clear the line, then the third step involves the use of a hydro-jet system which used pressurized streams of water to clear the line while still protecting the integrity of the drain. For more information on drain cleaning services at Lantz’s Lakeside Plumbing & AC.

Volkswagen Tiguan United: The Unknown Soldier
Text and Pics By Michael Hozjan
I’m back this week with another VW product, one that appears to have gone under the radar of most buyers when I’m scoping shopping mall and renovation center parking lots. That’s sad because the Tiguan is one of the most practical SUVs in the Canadian market. This despite having one of the most innovative television commercials in some time - remember the jealous SUV hitting their owners with a door or hood when he looked the new 2018 Tiguan, or getting squirted by the windshield washer? The second generation Tiguan touched on all the right buttons to be an instant success and it is in other parts of Canada-just not in this neck of the woods. In a sea of look alike SUVs, the Tiguan stands out with no nonsense styling. Throw in a clean interior and typical Volkswagen driving dynamics, and it’s easy to see why the Tiguan is a cut above the competition.
Above: Whether in the corporate parking lot, or the theater’s curb, the Tiguan’s styling fits the bill
Larger than most compact SUVs it competes with, the Tiguan offers an optional 50/50 split third row seat ($750). So if you really need a third row seat you’re no longer limited to a large SUV or breaking the bank.
It’s cliché, but Volkswagen offers four trim levels to suit every taste and budget; Trendline, Comfortline, United and Highline with prices starting at a modest $29, 795 for the front wheel drive version of the Trendline and $31,995 for the entry level all-wheel-drive Trendline and topping off the Highline at $40,195.
Above: Like the outside the interior is simple yet elegant
To paraphrase Henry Ford, you can choose any engine and transmission you want as long as it’s the 184-hp, turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. Hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission (what ever happened to manual trannies in SUVs) and the company’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system the Tiguan is slower off the line than some, but shows its true mettle on the highways and byways along lakeside roads, where its compliant road manners take over.
That’s the trade off of keeping gas mileage figures in check with the smaller SUVs in the category like Toyota’s RAV4 and Honda’s CR-V. I netted a respectable 9.4L/100km.
Above: Fit and finish is typically VW without the typical piano plastic
The base Trendline really comes with the basics – all the basics. As mentioned earlier you get the choice of front or all-wheel drive. Opt for the AWD and you get 4 driving modes to chose from including ECO. It runs on 17” wheels with LED tail lights and running lights. Blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert are standard and you also get Electronic Stability Control. Hill Decent Control is standard on the all wheel driver while the front wheel drive model gets hill hold assist. Why you need hill hold assist in an automatic is beyond me. A rear view camera, heated power mirrors, heated washer nozzles, heated front cloth buckets, remote start, Bluetooth connectivity, and 6.5” infotainment screen and 6-speaker sound system round off the base model. Not that basic is it?

If you want all the latest fancy electronic connectivity toys you’ll want to step up to the Comfortline ($35, 149) where you’ll find wireless charging, voice control, smartphone integration, sat radio, push button start, an 8” infotainment screen. Thinking safety, you get autonomous emergency braking, vehicle immobilizer with an alarm and pedestrian monitoring, cornering and fog lights.
Above: Decent head and leg room all around but I would have liked to see the rear seat fold flat
My United tester tips the scales at $37,145 with mostly decorative touches like interior chrome accents, one trim only wheels, leather wrapped steering wheel with multi-functional buttons. The heartthrob item is the panoramic sunroof. The United is also the sole model not to have the third row option. Interestingly if you’re going with the three row model you may be interested to know that three row models have less space than the two row counterpart. There’s 12 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row, 33 cu.ft. behind the second row, and 65.7 with both rows folded. The two row versions have a more spacious 37.6 cu. ft. behind the second row and a whopping 73.5 cu. ft. when the second row is folded.
Above: The United is the only trim with three sow seating not available, the trade off is more cargo room
At $40,195 for the Highline is approaching Atlas pricing. Matter of fact you can get yourself into a front drive Atlas for less. Decisions, decisions. But you get all the bells and whistles that we expect these days in top of the line models with the Tiguan. Riding on 18” wheels the Highline is well appointed with leather seats, a Fender premium 8-speaker sound system, adaptive cruise, power tailgate, and the usual array of driving aides. Snow belt drivers will also appreciate the heated wiper park.
So yes, there is a Tiguan to suit every taste and budget, or should I say there’s a compact SUV that really isn’t compact out there to suit your needs and budget.
While we’re awaiting the third generation 2022 Tiguan, don’t write off the 2021 it is a winner in my book. Do yourself a favor and head down to your local VW dealer and check one out for a test drive.
