Historically, putting soldiers in the same platoon really was the closest way to getting people to bond.

Could it have been anything other than inevitable when you and Kaiden fell for the Captain?

Your group, the Brooklyn Squad, wasn't actually meant to see combat.

It was more of an honor guard for Steve, an honorary ambassador and a living relic - technically the first biotic made by humans.

Though Steve's body carries no element zero and he cannot manipulate mass effect fields, it was Erskine's formula and subsequent research that was able to prepare certain people for bio-amp implantation and help make safe biotics out of those exposed to eezo.

The Brooklyn Squad consists of Steve, you, Kaidan, a turian who has come to respect and appreciate Steve's ethics, an asari, and a few other human biotics. It doesn't technically have any jurisdiction or ability to enforce galactic law...

But after an incident in which the Squad discovered and liberated a bunch of sapients kidnapped and enslaved by batarians, it has become the personal overt task force of the Council.

Officially the turian is the commanding officer for the Brooklyn Squad, though the chain of command is unlike what Steve is used to, since he was in the military over two hundred years ago.

But Steve really does appreciate having not only a goal and missions, but people he can truly trust, like when he was part of the Howling Commandos.

It's different for him - seeing you and Kaidan kiss. He makes an awkward joke about fraternization to cover for his unease, which he looks into.

Steve's never only been into women. But for a long time he sort of had to be above all that, first when he was in the US Military during the war, and now when he's an icon and completely out of his own time.

It wasn't conducive to exploring romance or even his own feelings. But seeing you and Kaidan openly loving one another without any thought of retaliation or anger - it shocks him. And it gives him hope.

He talks a little to the other members of the Squad about it, about how love is now, in this world where people are citizens of planets and systems and humans are not alone - about plural marriage and polyamory and sexuality and gender expression

How turian culture differs from asari from human from salarian and so on. Steve learns and expands as the whole Squad helps him to accept himself, and everything else.

And that's when Steve asks you two out. Still unsure, but wanting to try - Steve asks you and Kaidan on a date, accepting the potential of you both saying no.

But you say yes.

Yes to a trip around the Citadel trying increasingly-unfamiliar foods and laughing at how all of you feel the same kind of wrong-footed.

Yes to a visit to a library for translated volumes of quarian legends and asari myths, and exploring writers from worlds beyond your own.

Yes to a night in to watch Fleet and Flotilla, and to start exploring not only classics that are still way past Steve's time, but things bridging the gap between his missing years and now.

Yes to finding an apartment on the Citadel for an extended shore leave where all of you can stay.

Yes to a trip back to Earth to meet Kaidan's parents, where he introduces you as the loves of his life.

Yes to the rings - beautifully crafted triple bands of gold uniting the three of you as one.

Yes to spending the rest of your lives together amongst the stars, fighting off Reapers and never, ever giving up on each other.

Because if time itself couldn't prevent your love story, nothing can.

I've toyed with an AU where Vik is the one who teaches Regis how to be a biotic instead of being shipped to BAaT. Vik's been in Regis's life since he was little, so they watched him grow up and get exposed to eezo. But in Hannah's intense worry, she wanted something "official" and sent Regis to BAaT.

However, in this AU, Vik with Adrian's help manages to convince Hannah to let a matriarch with years of experience teaching young maidans and commandos to teach Regis and to take care of him. He ends up learning with a custom Asari amp made by Vik to go along with his L2, still gains in interest in cybernetics, and goes to university to get his degree. He still joins the Alliance and chooses to not only pursue a spec ops role, but also one with a medical concentration. Because of this, he also has a healthier view on space, since he was able to live with Adrian and occasionally Vik on Earth and spend some time on Omega (where he meets Zaeed quite earlier on, around the time Regis is in university).

Regis is more of an Adept in this AU with a sniper specialization and doesn't rely as much on his programs. He still is at Torfan, he still becomes the Butcher and an N7, but a notable part of this AU is that he meets Kaidan on Omega. It's changed some, as Regis is on Omega visiting Vik, which leads to him working with Zaeed as a favor, they both hear rumors from Vik about a biotic causing trouble in the Vorcha mafia, and well... Regis and Zaeed meet Kaidan, they all team up (and fuck), deal with the mafia and Zaeed's target, and they go their separate ways.

until the Normandy, where Regis and Kaidan meet again with a very interesting past, and both of them are trying to decide if they should bring up Omega, or let it lie...

Amp Amp, Shock Jock: Nice name. A bit restricted to the USA, but whatever. I also hate-love this card. First, the love. What a cool design. For three mana, you can have Effect+Damage. I think it could be part of a standard environment. The "hate" part is that Shock is a bad card. You're going to put 4 copies of a bad card in your deck just to overpay for it. Not sure it's something we really want to do. At the same time, a valu red/X deck might make it worka and standard is of a low enough powerl level to have this not be terrible.

Necroprankster: OHHH, Unearth would have been cool, you're right! I'm not sure Exhume is too strong for standard, but I'm not anyone that makes a living out of Magic (sad noises) so I can't really be sure of it. I also tend to underplay the potency of effects that hit/help everyone. Thanks!

Venser's Last Will: I agree with the commentary and I might add: you're paying 7 mana, doubling the life gain should not be restricted to once per turn I think.

Squadron Falconer: I agree with the commentary. I also don't like that the Hawks are put onto the battlefield, since this negates their strenght. One of the few cases where putting the card in hand is stronger! As strange as it may sound.

I have yet another confession; feels like I’ve been doing a lot of those these days. Maybe it was the fact that I’ve been doing a lot of work outside the Fair, or the fact that I’ve been really Magic’d out with fatigue and whatnot, but I came up with this contest more as a cool idea for the future and less about something I was personally interested in/something I’d build myself. We get a lot more entries on average, and hoo boy, commentary’s still a lot of work for a Saturday, but with this, I felt really backed into a corner. How am I supposed to write about this?

With fun. From the perspective of fun. That’s what makes the most sense. Am I going to apply my normal sensibilities? Yes, but designing for new players and kids and weird people is something that I’m drawn to, because I’m often surrounded by new players, kids, etc. So maybe this is a root return. But y’all don’t need to hear that. You want the goods. It’s nice to see your work appreciated and talked about. That’s…why this whole thing exists, heh.
