Blog Post - Convention Preview ᯓᡣ𐭩‧₊˚ ⊹
I've always enjoyed participating in fandom experiences! Though, I haven't been to anything crazy, like Comic-Con or Anime Expo. My most notable were just a few local Florida conventions. But they were still fun overall and gave a great look into youth culture and fandom communities with its vast amount of participants around the globe and things tailored for each fandom.
My first convention was PolyCon at Florida Polytechnic University. I don't remember much about it because it was a couple of years ago, but would say it was a good time! The convention itself was pretty quaint with not a lot to do and not many people attending besides Polytechnic students. But for being my first exposure to convention life, I was enamored. There was also a student-run maid cafe that was amusing to go to, specifically because my dad came to the convention with me. Younger me had absolutely no idea how to explain to my dad why a bunch of college students were in cat ears, maid costumes, and doing intricate dance routines. He was so confused... it was lowkey hilarious but also embarrassing.
I'd say the most memorable convention memory I have is when I went to Mega Con in 2021! It wasn't super long after the COVID quarantine got lifted, and so until then, I hadn't gone to anything or seen many people for what felt like a long time. Being able to go to a convention (of course, by then it was safe to be in public spaces) and simultaneously going with my best friend for her first time was just what I needed. However, it was very different with COVID regulations still in place, like masks and social distancing. But I did notice the convention felt like a sense of normalcy for many con-goers after the pandemic. Everyone I met was so kind (and that's rare because you're bound to run into a few bad eggs or creeps), and every cosplayer I saw, even with the masks, made the most out of their costumes! My best friend and I also tried to cosplay as our favorite characters from Demon Slayer because the anime was a huge comfort to us while we holed up inside our homes with nothing to do. Yes, I think my costume was horrible because I am no professional, and I lowkey hate looking at pictures of it, but it did act as a nice escape from the COVID-filled reality at the time. Because of that, I was so happy to spend that precious time with my best friend! And buy a lot of stuff in the artist alley because Mega Con's is so big lol.
Tumblr media
Another convention I went to earlier this year was the University of Florida convention, Swamp Con! I never knew until later in my first semester that UF held its own convention, and I think more students should know about it! Swamp Con is an event completely run by students in the Reitz Union, which I think is super impressive based on how many activities there were to do! There were panels, quizzes, performances, cosplay contests, an artist alley, outdoor games, special foods and drinks, and even a maid cafe (which was so funny to see a second time in a college). I also cosplayed again for this convention as Sophie Hatter from Howl's Moving Castle, which is such a huge shocker based on my Tumblr.
Tumblr media
Overall, the convention setting on a college campus took an unseen pressure off, which is something I also remembered feeling at PolyCon. I thought that would be an interesting thing to point out compared to venue conventions!

Find a New Home and Family in Newly Licensed Yuri Manga 'Monthly in the Garden With My Landlord'
On Friday, at a panel at Sakura-Con, Yen Press announced that it has licensed Yodokawa's Yuri slice of life manga Monthly in the Garden With My Landlord (Maitsuki Niwa-tsuki Ooya-tsuki) for English release. The first English volume will be published in the Fall of 2023.
Tumblr media
The publisher describes the series:
Asako Suga needs a change to get over her recent breakup and decides moving to a new home would be just the thing. She finds a great little place a bit removed from the city with a lovely garden, but there’s a catch—the house also comes with a live-in landlord! Having a charming girl lazing about would be distracting enough, but it seems she’s keeping a secret as well…
Tumblr media
Monthly in the Garden With My Landlord began digital serialization on Comic Newtype in June 2021. Kadokawa published the third compiled volume on March 29 in Japnese.
The manga has received positive reviews from critics. Erica Friedman awarded both of the first two Japanese volumes an 8/10 score, praising its focus on "found family" and partnership.
Yokokawa is a Yuri mangaka also known under the circle names Tebacco and givelit. She has contributed to the Avalon, Chocolat, and Offical Bloom Into You anthologies. Her works are often slice of life shakaijin Yuri, featuring romance between adult women, such as Tora to Hachidori, onshot Men Men Musubi, and Ichikoe, Nifuri, Tachiaoi, which is currently serialized in Comic MeDu.

Monthly in the Garden With My Landlord will be Yokokawa's first series published in English. Volume one released in Fall 2023.

I went to Basingstoke Comic Con last Friday with my son Gregory - following a break in my chemo schedule due to emergency surgery resulting in fewer inside bits and an ileostomy. I'd thought I wouldn't be able to go - and it wasn’t easy, but I did it anyway.
Here’s what happened:
First I had my photo with Rachel Luttrell who was lovely and liked my feltie Teyla:
Tumblr media
Then my son took the role of photographer for me in my Impala cosplay with Baby herself (or one of them)!
Tumblr media
Then there were some strange clashes in the schedule - Stargate Q and A sessions when the Stargate guests were supposed to be signing autographs, so we weren’t sure who was going to turn up or how to be in two places at once.  But in the end, it worked to our advantage, because nobody else was sure either, and so when Joe and Rachel came along, there was hardly anyone else there so we got more time and more conversation than we would have.
Joe remembered me from the Wales Comic Con in 2021, which I definitely wasn’t expecting and he said he still had the little book of drawings I gave him there!  (It was a ridiculously stuffed little book - I’d gone way overboard.)  He took a photo of my art and put it on his Instagram!
Tumblr media
Then we went to Rachel’s table and she was really nice and liked my art and gave me her phone to put my Instagram name in.  There was no one else at Joe’s table at that point so he was wandering about behind her and it was lovely just to see them interact as friends!
Tumblr media
We managed to get Gary Jones next, who was really funny.  I told him it was my son’s first Comic Con and he shook Gregory’s hand.  But then he said, ‘No, that’s no good,’ and got up, came around the table and proceeded to give Gregs a lesson in firm handshakes.  It was hilarious!
I’d wanted to draw all the guests but just didn’t have time, with all the chemo and being in hospital shenanigans, so had to use the photos provided, which were nice, if not the same.
Tumblr media
Next, after some hanging around and listening to the Q and As (which were all really good and Michael Shanks just kept spinning on his stool and being really silly) we got Paul McGillion and Rainbow Sun Francks.  They were both really lovely and nice to Gregory and, again, there were no queues so we had plenty of time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we hit a bit of a hurdle because the day (and my energy) was running out and it didn’t look like Ben Browder or Michael Shanks were coming back.  Michael had a private Meet and Greet going on but Gregs really wanted to meet him, in particular because he wanted to introduce his homemade Goa’uld.
Tumblr media
But then somehow we ended up in an impromptu session in the hotel bar - just a handful of con-goers with Ben and Paul and Rainbow! And Paul came up to me and told me how much he liked my art, because a friend had brought one of my pictures to be signed and pointed me out! And then I got to sit down opposite Ben and have a little chat and he signed my art.
Tumblr media
But we still hadn't got Michael Shanks. So I pestered various organisers until I found one who knew what to do. And she got us in on the end of his Meet and Greet and then when the meet-and-greeters had gone we had a little private session where he, predictably, attacked himself with Gregory's Goa'uld and then signed my art and then before he went (blush - hides behind hands) I got a kiss on the cheek! 🥰
So, a memorable day! And then we had the fun of trekking home from Basingstoke, through London, on costume, me in my Impala outfit and Gregs as my little Gate-mission-ready military escort. We should just dress like that all the time...
I hope you liked my little Con Diary, @massharp1971 and @colonelshepparrrrd and anyone else who's interested!
Thanks to @hermscat for getting me an extra key card for her hotel room so I could flake out when needed and for transporting us to the station!

Happy 35th Birthday the Bonnie Lassie Karen Gillan, born in Inverness November 28th 1987.
Karen loved acting early on and worked in several youth theatre groups. After gaining an HNC Acting and Performance course at Edinburgh’s Telford College she moved to London at age 18 to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.
Gillan was scouted by a modelling agency before working as an actress. Karen appeared in Rebus in 2006 but it was her casting as the Doctor’s companion, Amy Pond, on the long-time hit U.K. sci-fi TV program Doctor Who that led to her career breakthrough.
In her charity work she has helped promote Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and opened a ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 2013 she shaved her hair off for.
A favourite with US fans on the show, Karen took the big step over to Hollywood in the TV show NTSF:SD:SUV  an American television comedy. Staying in America she was then cast the lead in Selfie, an American single-camera sitcom for ABC.
It is not all Hollywood with Miss Gillan  as she returned to Scotland to star in an indie Scottish romantic comedy called Not Another Happy Ending alongside Emun Elliott, who she incidentally shares a birthday with but is 4 years his junior. It’s a decent film, if you want to watch it you can find it on Amazon Prime, or Netflix.
On 2nd November 2016, it was announced that Gillan was to write, direct and star in her feature directorial debut with Burbank-based development and production company Mt. Hollywood Films’ indie drama project titled Tupperware Party.  Set in her home city of Inverness released in 2018 and retitled The Party’s Just Beginning, It’s a decent first effort from Karen and it will be interesting to see if she continues to write and direct in the future.
No matter what she decides to do Karen Gillan will find no shortage of work, I counted 10 films since The Party’s Just Beginning till this year, and another four projects in varying stages of production, including the third in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Karen has supported the charities Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC) and helped out Great Ormond Street Hospital and earlier this year she visited the Mikeysline crisis support centre in Inverness after presenting her film The Party’s Just Beginning. The film is about the high suicide rate in the Scottish Highlands, and Gillan made a public pledge to support the mental health charity.
Last year Karen says she misses Inverness and wants to swap LA for Scottish Highlands. When asked if she pined for her home town, she said: “Yes, I do - every single day, I’m so homesick. I keep looking up houses in the Highlands, thinking I’m just going to move back . But then, for some reason, I can never seem to do it and there’s always some work reason not to and now I’m in Los Angeles, even though it’s not my favourite city in the world.
In 2021 Karen starred in the action crime thriller,  Gunpowder Milkshake, which is available on Netflix, apparently they have already confirmed they want a follow up sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is due to hit the cinemas next May and Rhona Who Lives by the River an animated  TV Series for Disney+. will also air.
On being asked about her nationality once Karen commented
I am legitimately Scottish. I can officially say - yes. Yeah, I am from Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. The last two pics are from this weekends Tokyo Comic con, where Kaaren was presented with flowers and a cake to mark her birthday, don’t you just love the cat sweatshirt!

Big City Greens New York Comic-Con 2022 Panel Highlights
The New York Comic-Con Panel of Big City Greens took place today and we want to give the scoop on the main highlights of information of the panel.
-The crew discussed how they got the roles with Zeno Robinson mentioning how Big City Greens saved his life and how the show lead him to voice roles at Disney like The Owl House,Amphibia,Turning Red,Diary Of A Wimpy Kid,Cars On The Road and Baymax!
Bob Joles discussed how his voice acting for Bill Green is inspired on his own grandfather
Artemis discussed how she gives more a little of venom with voice acting Alice Grees.
Cousin Jilly is Marieve Herington’s favorite episode!
The Greens going back to the country was always planned from day one, the storyline was used when the crew was send to Work From Home during the peaks of the COVID-19 pandemic at 2020.
They wanted to go back to the country when the show really earned it
The Country Arc was expected to be the Series Finale storyline since Disney TVA shows barely go beyond 3 seasons.
A New Half-Hour Christmas Special who takes place on Big City is on the way and was written on 2020 but due the scheduling Disney needed to move it to December 2022. It was going to air on December 2021
Will Gloria and Alice visit The Greens? You will find out this Saturday on "Homeward Hound"
An upcoming episode will explore Gabriella and Cricket's long distance relationship.
The Theme of The Series is "Change and how we deal with it!" Explaining Remy's Speech as a main point and how on S3B the episodes opens alot of doors on change.
Big City Greens The Movie is not storyline of the Series Finale (Season 5????) but a Series Finale is being mapped on the head of Shane & Chris.
Chris can know what are the shorts he's recording when he reads the scripts.
Season 3B will introduce more characters like Patti the owner of the restaurant on Smalton but S4 will introduce even more characters.
A little girl asked why Remy goes with the Greens and Zeno gives details on this Saturday episode "Farmer Remy"
Little Girl final question "Is there gonna be a Season 5 or Season 6?" "Big City Greens is NOT stopping anytime soon"

This 2021 SDCC panel is also one of the reasons I couldn't agree with some of the stuff tumblr posts last year had stated... which was mostly made up! ie "Stan didn't actually work on the show" or
Like you can see the joy emanating from their faces when Stan and the cast and other crew explain their parts in the show... I can't believe any of them would hate it, whether this was a promo video or not xD Like... you don't go to a SDCC panel of the show you made if you... absolutely hated working on it. idk, it just doesn't make sense. I get that seeing a show or characters from a fandom lens makes people hate that show/characters make stuff up about the show later (i.e. other fans hating on Yuichi Usagi, just as a concept, bc of the ship/shipping, I get it) but it just seems... so strangely petty. Plus non-shipping fans might have been mad that this was not a direct adaptation.... Again I get it! I've been there with other stuff. But whether a show is good or bad, it seems mean-spirited to just lie about the crew or creators of it. It's okay to admit that you had different expectations about it. Yes, it's aimed at a younger viewership and does not directly adapt the darker aspects of the comic, but, that's wholly because of circumstance (Netflix show) and the show is good despite that. Your view of it can simply depend, well, on your view on spinoffs and animation in general, when you watched, what mood you were in. Whatever opinions fans might have, this panel seems to suggest the cast and crew had a mostly good time on it. Unless everyone here is some sort of pathological liar.
youtube
More press coverage of the Samurai Rabbit SDCC 2021 panel:
IGN, Polygon (a few pics), Animation Magazine, Geek Network, AIPTcomics (I'll add any more I find if I find smth new)
Screenrant (announcement of the Comic-Con @ home lineup) longer article on AWN (2022, about the premiere with more pics)
also, Stan's interview with the SDCC blog in 2022
"UBLOG: Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles debuted its first season on Netflix, and has already been renewed. What was it like finally getting to see your characters come to life in that way, and how pleased are you that it was so well received? Sakai: We at Usagi Studios are very pleased with Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles. The protagonist Yuichi is a direct descendant of my Miyamoto Usagi who is featured very prominently and with a twist that I thought was brilliant. We worked very closely with Gaumont and Netflix, approving/adjusting scripts, designs, suggesting voice actors, etc. I even calligraphed (by hand) the logo for the series. Samurai Rabbit expanded on a mini-series I created titled “Senso” inspired by HG Wells’ War of the Worlds wherein the martians invaded feudal Japan instead. Japan took that alien technology and developed it, adding their own cultural elements. Samurai Rabbit takes place in the future with Yuichi a young samurai in training who worships his famous (or infamous) ancestor, Usagi. Like my Usagi stories, Samurai Rabbit is very character driven and the first season tells of Yuichi meeting what is to become his core group of friends as they battle yokai, the haunts and monsters of Japanese folklore. I’m so glad that a second season is coming up."
i cannot imagine Stan Sakai Lying. like. LEGIT i cannot so i don't get why ppl make stuff up abt the show. it hasn't been very egregious so far, just stuff in tags and reblogs, but still. weird. fandom is weird abt stuff like this lol! I also do not get the hate that the show itself and the character of Yuichi Usagi get for basically. Not being what people imagined in their heads of an Usagi Yojimbo spinoff. I kind of get that part, because when Avatar: LOK was previewed in 2011, I imagined such a vast and colorful version of the show based on just 2 art pieces, I was caught a bit off-guard by the 1st season's premiere, and completely let down by the 2nd season. So I get that part at least. Many articles seemed to suggest that this show would be an adaptation, and I am guessing this is where people's expectations rose ten-fold in a similar way to my 2011 self. From interviews, I sense that the crew had similar expectations when they joined: a Usagi aniamted project with Stan Sakai directly involved! I'd be asking to be on the show too if I'd been a Gaumont studios member at the time.
The mountain is high and it is hard to surpass. When Netflix ordered the show to be about a younger Usagi and gear it for a younger audience too, I find that perhaps the Gaumont and Usagi Studios crew also saw this. In a fan's eyes, almost no one could match Stan Sakai in his storytelling, and the crew are big fans of his work. So it would make sense that they started to see the show they were developing differently. Instead of something like the 2003 adaptation of Miyamoto Usagi, where they make him younger and change his story a bit, the SR crew saw an opportunity. Lets make it about a descendant and a whole different setting, yeah? So the show becomes something quite different, but more manageable now. The mountain seems more like a long trek than an unpassable task.
But it also seems from every interview and official release I've seen that most of the people working on the show really liked what they made and liked working on it, even if it wasn't a direct adaptation of Usagi Yojimbo, something most of the crew were a fan of already themselves.
also, the series was worked on at least since 2018. Yeah, it's aimed at a younger audience, but a lot of effort seems to be put into it anyway, from writing, acting and art aspects all-around, so it just doesn't seem like something that people would feel the need to lie about. it's a good show. It is just not a direct adaptation of the comics, that people have been wanting, or something "style adjacent" to the comics, e.g. what people expect of the comics (that it's only dark and gritty).
A 2019 comicon.com article sharing a facebook photo at Gaumont studios with Stan is the perfect example of this - "This studio is known for their work on the original Redwall animated series. Judging by the key art shown above and Gaumont’s location in Paris, I hope that the animated series will remain faithful to the darker tone of the comics." - of course an article by a reader of the comic would have something like this, but we can see as early as this, the writer is setting themselves up for higher expectations for the series. Which I don't find fault in, who doesn't want a cool animated adaptation of their favourite comic? But comparing a studio now to what the studio was 15-20 years before is like setting the reader up for expectations that are too unrealistic. Redwall is a beautiful adaptation, but each show/series will almost always have a different team of people working on, so from an animation work POV, it just seems like something unrealistic. Animation industry, both western and otherwise, has always been something that can't always cater to all interests.
not-so-hot take but: it's actually good that it's not a direct adaptation!
The expectations people put on any adaptations/projects based on an older thing, is probably also a huge factor in why both younger and older fans (both shppers and the fans of the comic) feel so terse about the series, when in reality, it's possibly the best result we could get for a netflix adaptation (if I look at any anime/manga live-action adaptations for example, netflix has sort of "dropped the ball" on many of these). The series having loose and not-so-loose connections to the comics canon basically ensures that nothing about the comics canon is ever changed much, or that Stan is never obligated to change the comic for the show. The comic and show are allowed to be separate, but the show is also an homage and open fanart to the comic.
This also means that whether viewers hate or love the series, perhaps having a non-adaptation og series based on the comic... means they will actually read the comic itself now. I see this with both liveaction and animated adaptations, but ppl usually don't pick up the og source material based on just one adaptation, and if the adaptation is good or faithful, they still won't - thinking of TMNT 2003 but also Rise series haters who insist Raph doesn't use Tonfa, when that was a og comics reference lol - there's no trust that the animation folk working on your favourite properties adaptation are ALSO FANS of the same thing. So the chances for that might be similar. If people are happy with an adaptation, they might be less likely to seek out more of it. But I just find this series an interesting attempt from that POV. It almost feels similar to what Transmedia Storytelling is explained as a technique - of telling a story across multiple platforms, adding something unique each time.
A direct retelling is different from an original piece or continuation set in the same universe. Imagine that Usagi Yojimbo, the original comic, is like a tentpole that readers gather around. As time grows on, different animated adaptations occur, some tabletop games, a theather play etc. Different media for Usagi to inhabit as a character and a concept. And then comes along Samurai Rabbit, wholly not an adaptation of the comic's stories at all, but something inspired of it, building on it, not changing it much, but still adding to the canon in its own way (the existence of the Ki-Stone in this show). It's different but it's entirely a work made out of love for the comic, and you can see it in the different aspects it adapts from the comic (the 2D sequences, the skull-death-bubbles, the references to the comic, how it shows Miyamoto Usagi) and how it approcahes the characters as a cast.
So because Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles is not a strict retelling of any of the comics narratives, it allows itself room to explore and grow as its own thing, while also loosely adding to the canon in an interesting and unique way.
I hope phrasing the show from that vantage point gives other existing a different view on it.
this show also credits everyone in the production, including even the 3D animation company (a lot of animated shows only credit the company itself, or at least used to do this a lot) so I think that speaks a lot about how the production sees the show itself. The people making the show are valuable and did well, whatever the reception is going to be. And genuinely, I hope it was actually a good experience working on the show for all of the cast and crew.

I know this is an odd question but does anyone have all of those “out of context spoilers” that were shared during Comic Con at Home in (I think) 2021? I think I found all of them on Reddit but there’s another problem and that’s that, mainly for my sake, I need them separated into two sections. Spoilers that have happened and those that haven’t yet. I’m working on something and want to go briefly go over those spoilers and I don’t think I’ll have time to rewatch Seasons 4 and 5 to figure out which spoiler aligns with what. If that makes sense.
If anyone could help me, I’d greatly appreciate it!

What Micah's been up to
It's been about four years since Tumblr put up that ill-advised NSFW ban and led me to leave "forever." I honestly didn't think I'd come back. I started gaining a lot of momentum on Twitter and I'd been growing dissatisfied with Tumblr on the whole. At the time I was looking for a reason to leave and the carte-blanche NSFW ban was the nail in the coffin. I still don't fully trust Tumblr's admin, but they're allowing the kind of art I do again and my past frustrations with Tumblr don't need to be covered here.
So here are some of the things I've done the last few years!
Calendar projects!
Since 2018, I have produced four illustrated calendars that funded on Kickstarter! I started with the 2019 Hunks & Myth Calendar, which featured shirtless men from around the world carrying cute baby versions of mythological creatures!
I followed that up with the 2020 Hunks & Myth Calendar, which had mythological men and baby animals. That one was successful but not as big as the prior year. Fortunately, it was pre-covid, so I can tell it was less about the life circumstances and more about the subject itself. Just wasn't as in-demand, which is okay! Live and learn.
Tumblr media
I took a year off from calendars and then put together the 2022 Coffeehouse Hunks Calendar! This one featured twelve coffee recipes you can make at home, all accompanied by a sort of "gijinka" hunk of that coffee drink! This one did VERY well and it was very encouraging to see it go so hard.
Tumblr media
The Coffeehouse Hunks' success led me to create this year's calendar project, the 2023 Cocktail Hunks Calendar! The Cocktail Hunks followed the Coffeehouse theme -- a series of cocktail recipes accompanied by a "gijinka" of that drink. This was even more fun and it's been great to see how my art has evolved since the first calendar -- since the 2022 calendar, even! The Cocktail Hunks far surpassed my expectations and it feels really, really good to see so many people interested in my work like this!
If any of you are interested in the Cocktail Hunks Calendar, or recipe cards for either the Cocktails or Coffeehouse Hunks, I do have copies that I'll be posting for sale soon. So please keep an eye out for that!
The Sparrow
The year 2021 marked another big, big, big spike in my artistic career. It's when I ran and funded the Kickstarter for the Sparrow!
Tumblr media
Some of you may remember I was still working on the Sparrow even before I left Tumblr. A lot has changed, a lot has grown out of it, a lot has happened, and thanks to Kickstarter support, I was able to fund the Sparrow's very first print run! A whole 70 pages of comics plus some bonus content like character interviews, RPG character sheets and profiles, and more.
I'm in the midst of making Book 2 right now. It'll be a while before I finish that, but you wouldn't believe how amazing it was to see so many people back the Sparrow, a book many of them had never heard of. Honestly, it was a little overwhelming, and it's amazing that I still get people interested in buying at cons and the like.
You can get a PDF version of the Sparrow on my Gumroad shop or read the whole thing on my Sparrow website. It's like Percy Jackson meets the X-Men but more gay :D
Other things
The Sparrow and the Calendars have been my biggest projects the last few years. But some other things I've worked on include:
Soldier/Sailor: A gay superhero oneshot -- This 20-page one-shot was written by Andrew Wheeler (Sins of Black Flamingo, Marvel Voices: Pride, etc.) and drawn by me. It follows the story of Jacob, aka Warrior One, as he reunites with his old lover Armon, Prince of Atlantis.
The Strapping Lads: A D&D Supplement - Twelve classes, twelve men, all ready for your D&D campaign. I put this together for FlameCon 2019 and it went over pretty well >:]
Mutants and Masterminds: Parade Route - I got hired to do the cover art for this Mutants and Masterminds RPG supplement! This illustration features the gay man Johnny Rocket supporting teammate and trans woman Lady Liberty as she attends her first Pride as both an openly queer person and a superhero!
I think there's more that's happened but those are some of my big highlights for the last few years. I'll also post some of my backlog here over the next while, once I have a chance to schedule in some posting. I hope you enjoy, and thank you to everyone that is still here and remembers lil ol' me!

Usagi Chronicles and reviews
I'm watching Usagi Chronicles reviews and there seems to be this general misconception around the internet that netflix somehow took the idea of a usagi TV show and muddled up the possibility of a direct adaptation? Or are people just mad that it's not their idea of a Usagi series? Like of course youtube reviews are going to be full of strange outrage and misplaced cricicisms over cartoons so I can't take those seriously, but even just fandom chatter sometimes has this idea going around that it's somehow a bad series for not adhering to the comic 100%. Or sometimes I’ll see other viewers’ comments like “it had so much potential but it could have been better”. I thought I’d collect my thoughts on this using references I’ve seen around before, such as interviews and articles with Stan Sakai and others. I don’t really agree with this view that the show has to be bad for not getting a “perfect” vision or adaptation and I don’t really believe that it squandered any “potential” either.
Like I think this show is super interesting to look at from a “how it was made” kind of perspective. The story and art are actually pretty good imo and the music really feels like it ties it all together by adding to the mood and setting + for carrying a lot of the series from an emotional POV. Yeah, it falls a bit short on some aspects but overall it’s a pretty fun series. Whatever you might personally know about animation or tv series making, it looks like a lot of care was put into this Samurai Rabbit cartoon.
EDIT(10.02.2023+27.03.2023): under a readmore bc this got way too long, but u should definitely check out these interviews if u still think the show didn’t respect Sakai’s original world and vision, or if u wanna write your own review one day but don’t know anything abt how the show was made.
Interviews/articles:
Filmschool Rejects (article), April 2022 The Popverse (interview), May 2022 Stan Sakai and the Usagi Chronicles | Comic-Con@Home 2021 Comic Book Couples Counseling (podcast interview), May 2022 Traversing the Stars (video interview), Jul 2022
Stan Sakai has said in at least 2 interviews that what got him on board was the view of Neo Edo painted by Khang Le (art director on series, check his work out on his website) - when no other idea suggested so far appealed to him. So this means he was on board with the show and approved of it. even if the concept is essentially a spinoff/alternate universe to older fans (it started off as based on or taking ideas from Sakai's Senso miniseries). What I like most about the series is that it seems to be respectful about both old and new japanese culture albeit being set in a semi-futuristic Edo-style re-imagining of the feudal japan that Sakai writes in Usagi Yojimbo. Stan Sakai was involved in the making of it so it cannot be in any other way. I've seen some american animated shows in the past which have approached this "culture inspiration" differently, sometimes even in ways where it feels weird or disrespectful. This show even has an all-asian english main cast, and japanese-american composer Aiko Fukushima has made the soundtrack for it, which I feel is a little rare to see. But hey, I'm european asian, not US asian so maybe I'm seeing all that in a different way here.
Like it kinda feels like ppl got stuck on previous animated versions and their own idea of what an adaptation/series should be. I know many were probably looking forward to a faithful animated adaptation but things are what they are and feels a bit unfair to say that what we got somehow took away from that chance. Like it is just one show.
yeah ok, it's aimed at children and it sorta pulls its punches on the tone and seriousness. but that doesn't have to be a bad thing? Having a "media tent" for younger viewers can mean that there'll be new readers introduced to the original comic series through this cartoon. It's also obvious to see that the people working on this are also fans of Sakai's work and wanted to make something fun, despite any tv animation limits, so I sorta wish people saw that more.
Or even more down the line is people saying it mucks up Sakai's vision about the comic series. Like. He is listed as "executive producer" and every design, script and decision went through him first. From interviews it sounds like he had a lot of trust in the team, to make something he would also like. It's ok to dislike the show for various reasons, as we do with all shows but at least respect that the comic author himself has approved of the series.
like im not saying people are saying all this directly, just various sentiments I've seen in reviews, boards and social media etc, but I feel like this misunderstaning is behing the reason why ppl dunk on the show and characters so easily? Of course, as someone who is still reading the comic series (have read a few comics, but not enough to know everything about it), maybe I just have a very limited view on this as someone who happens to like the tv show itself too. I love the art and storytelling in the comic but I also really like the animated series just for what it is.
Maybe it's also that we as internet-goers have become even moreso accustomed to seeing, reviewing and thinking about our media in such a superficial critical way that we can't really share honest opinions without feeling the need to add "real criticisms" to what we say. I feel like that's a bit connected to the "outrage culture" mentioned at the beginning too but honestly this has been a problem abt cartoon/media reviews for a longer time already. Like it's valid to not like stuff but at least don't make stuff up about them
man... I should try writing my own review faster but I really want to see other reviews first (they are a slog to get thru bc I have trouble watching video reviews)
anyway.... lol just some semi-collected thoughts.
at the end of the day, for me personally, I just genuinely like this series and it brings me joy to see that the crew and cast and Sakai himself seemed to really enjoy making it too. It’s nice to see both from interviews and the show itself. maybe it just makes me a bit sad that I keep finding shows where I see that there’s goodness in it and then the majority of viewers I come across online find it different.... like yeah, it had potential for “more” but also what we got was good. I’m happy the show got made.

Miona in RIOT Land
24 years old, a little older than the others in the RIOT MUSIC Virtual Music Agency and yet, somehow or other, Miona found herself sought out by them. Her voice simultaneously exudes a more mature quality from those 24 years of experience, and yet she herself remains youthful and upbeat. Growing up around all sorts of instruments and sounds since she was a young girl, Miona developed into quite the versatile artist, surely something that appealed to RIOT MUSIC and their overall goal to unleash a RIOT OF EMOTIONS into the world.
Tumblr media
When it comes to the music she herself is a fan of, Miona enjoys Japanese Pop stand outs like the ferocious warrior of J-Pop Sheena Ringo or slick band sensation Official Hige Dandism, but also likes western pop music quite a bit. Though knowing a bit of theory, Miona focused on more just scales, but always took in the sounds of her surrounding; Birds chirping in the sky, steady rain lapping onto a rooftop, these simple sounds brought joy to Miona, and now she had her chance to bring joy to many, many others. Potentially around the world!
Tumblr media
Miona pondered and pondered, outside of just her voice alone, what could she uniquely bring to RIOT MUSIC? They seemingly had a roster of dynamic and unique artists, each who added their own flare to the storm RIOT was cooking! She drew back to her own life experiences, which again being a few years older than the rest of the girls, meant she had a bit more to draw and learn from over her 24 years. After a detective’s amount of inquisition into her own soul she finally settled upon an answer she could be proud of; Her singing would be a home for her audience to return to, whenever they needed it.
Miona’s Brightest Moments With RIOT (SO FAR!!!)
Miona Sumeragi Debuts With “St. Elmo’s Fire”
youtube
With Christmas just days away in 2021, RIOT MUSIC gifted fans a whole new artist debut, and what a debut! The first RIOT MUSIC singer to come out of the gate with an original song, Miona set the bar high for the next year with the cold and somber yet equally hopeful and empowering “St. Elmo’s Fire.” To this day, it remains a highlight in her discography and that smile Miona flashes the camera towards the end? Heart Melting 💕
RIOT MUSIC “Re:Volt 2022”
Just months after her debut with RIOT MUSIC, Miona Sumeragi had the chance to join her sisters in Tokyo live on stage for the very first time! Though newest to the group, having a couple of years on some of the others in the RIOT FAMILY gave her an edge, allowing her to immediately perform up to par with her veteran sempai. Surely, she endeared many over in the crowd who weren’t as familiar with her yet!
Project Meteopolis From RIOT MUSIC Forms
youtube
Miona had steadily been releasing covers and engaging in singing streams alongside her new RIOT MUSIC family, but with her voice now in the mix it occurred to everyone involved for the first time something new could be done; Miona Sumeragi full-bodied mature singing made for nice contrast with Suzuna Nagihara’s pitch perfect knife-sharp balladry, and the futuristic sub-label Meteopolis was formed.
Miona Hosts Special Birthday Concert <UTAGE>
Tumblr media
An August baby, the time came for Miona to host her first special live event! <Utage> came to viewers as a unique streaming experience that brought Miona Sumaragi’s adoring fans into her sublime and sleek world! She performed a selection of her favorite covers, delighting the many who watched along!
Meteopolis Performs in Los Angeles
Tumblr media
Just days ago, Miona Sumeragi along with Meteopolis partner touched down in Los Angeles for three days of mini-performances at L.A. Comic Con 2022! This not only marked their first international appearance, but RIOT MUSIC’s first major event within North America! Miona loved getting to introduce and perform a lovingly curated selection of signature Japanese tunes for American audiences!
Tumblr media
Miona Sumeragi, and RIOT MUSIC, have nowhere to go but up. A bit older than her companions, yet packing in enough spirit to enliven a stadium the stars shine bright on our platinum-haired songstress extraordinaire. Now, she’s helping watch over two fledgling Meteopolis trainees too, finally transitioning from kohai to senpai! Stay tuned for much, much more from Miona and Meteopolis!
