Pieces of rubber, listeria and undeclared allergens: Several food products recalled in Canada
Health Canada has posted a number of food recalls in the last month, ranging from chocolate containing undeclared allergens to gluten-free nuggets containing pieces of rubber.
More than five food products have been recalled in the last few weeks due to the presence of milk — specifically, the presence of milk in the absence of a warning. Some of the food products that have been recalled recently because they failed to warn on the label that they had milk in them include chocolate treats, chocolate coffee beans, a protein powder that was chocolate flavoured and plant-based breakfast sandwiches, among others.
On Saturday, Dark 55 per cent Cacao Almond Bark by Olivia & Leo Gourmet Treats and the Chocolate Lab brand Chocolate Coffee Beans were both recalled due to undeclared milk.
Both were sold in Alberta and online, while the Chocolate Lab coffee beans were also sold in Ontario. Saturday also saw the recall of certain Alpha Foods brand plant-based breakfast sandwiches and burritos due to undeclared milk – sandwiches that were marketed nationally. This recall was first announced on Dec. 16, but was updated Saturday to include three more sandwiches with labels that failed to warn consumers about the presence of milk.
The concern, according to Health Canada, is that not declaring the presence of milk on the label could lead to allergic reactions if a person who cannot tolerate milk consumes the product.
High Impact Plant Protein, chocolate flavour, sold by Power Life by Tony Horton, has also been recalled for undeclared milk as of Dec. 19. This protein powder is sold online and Health Canada’s recall was triggered by a recall of this product in another country.
Although there have been no recorded allergic reactions in connection with these products so far, undeclared egg have caused at least one reaction in a customer. On Wednesday, two types of Feast sandwiches by Circles & Squares were recalled due to the presence of eggs in the sandwiches that weren't included on the label. These were sold in Ontario and are connected to one reaction at this time, according to Health Canada.
A chicken pot pie made by Scotian Isle Baked Goods and sold in Ontario was also recalled on Dec. 16 due to undeclared eggs. However, the recall was triggered by the company itself and hasn’t been associated with any allergic reactions thus far.
Some recent recalls have been spurred by factors other than a misleading label. On Tuesday, Venetian Meats’ Finocchiona Salami Sweet Fennel was recalled due to test results detecting possible salmonella contamination.
The products were sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. Consumers are advised to throw out any products that fall within the affected lots. Food contaminated with salmonella can cause “serious and sometimes deadly infections,” and even healthy people can experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps as a result.
A type of cheese sold in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec was also recalled on Dec. 16 due to potential contamination with an even deadlier bacteria: listeria. Gorgonzola Dolce by Igor has been recalled due to the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes, which can cause vomiting, persistent fever and muscle aches. In serious cases of infection, it can even lead to death.
Health Canada warned that many may have purchased the cheese without knowing the brand. “The recalled product may have been sold by various retailers, either clerk-served or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name or manufacture before date,” the recall states. "Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled product are advised to contact their retailer.”
On the more bizarre end, Pinty's Eatwell brand Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets were recalled at the beginning of the month after pieces of rubber were found in the food. These nuggets were sold nationally, according to Health Canada.
At the end of November, a mild salsa by Casa Grande which was sold in Newfoundland and Labrador was recalled due to there being pieces of metal in it.

The Adeia - a new festival for Demeter
It's here, it's here, the Adeia is almost here!! In about 16 hours I'll be starting the festival of the Adeia as proposed by the ever lovely @thegrapeandthefig & @iliosflower . I've gone ahead and modified little bits, but the essence remains the same, which I will summarize as told by Aurora:
On a global scale, we’re dealing with a climate crisis that is putting food sources at risk. On a more local level, conflicts and abnormal weather are creating risks of bad harvests, resources shortages and/or inflations. We are aware that not everyone is impacted directly by the current ongoing issues, but we hope that this festival (or at least the idea) can be useful beyond these and be seen through a wider scope of praying for food security at large. We named the festival Adeia, from the ancient Greek ἄδεια, which conveniently can signify both “abundance”/”plenty” and “freedom from fear”/”security”. All things the festival aims for.
Who is being celebrated & invoked?
While both Demeter Soteira (the saviour) and Herakles Alexikakos (averter of evil) were originally mentioned, I will be holding this festival in honor of Demeter Soteira and Ares Karpodotes (giver of fruit) based on my praxis and personal relationships with the gods.
Offerings & Libations
I've decided to go a bit extravagant with my offerings for this as food is at the heart of this festival and if I learned anything from my Southern mom, it's that you always bring out the best food for your honored guests.
Appetizers: Figs drizzled with honey and a plate with goat cheese, apples, dolmas, and nuts Main Course: Pork Ribs (honey & brown sugar), Pork Ribs (olive oil, butter, & herbs), potato Salad, grilled whole corn, and artisanal bread loaf (not for me as I have celiac, all for Demeter!) Desert: GF honey cakes and oat milk ice cream Drinks: Cucumber-lime lemonade, mint mojitos, honey and warm milk
Rough Outline of The Adeia
Go to farmers market to buy produce, baked bread, & flowers for Demeter Soteira & Ares Karpodotes
Stop at the river on the way home & give an offering to the Potamoi (the Columbia River is the lifeblood of our valley & provides us with the water we need to survive)
Come home, start preparing food & prepare outdoor area for feast & ritual later in the evening
Visit local nurseries and buy some native plants, to be dedicated to both Demeter and Ares; specifically anything that is beneficial for pollinators given the scope of the Adeia
buy canned goods & donate to local food bank in honor of Demeter Soteira & Ares Karpodotes
Finish preparing food offerings. Light bonfire & start ritual (basically normal worship with the offerings; include the Homeric Hymn to Demeter as well as my own written devotionals)
I think that's it! I'm really looking forward to this festival and I'll have to give an update on how it went. Again, so many thanks from the bottom of my heart to @thegrapeandthefigand @iliosflower for putting in the work to create a new festival for the HelPol community that blends our ancient faith with modern problems.

Thank you to @567inpanem for coming up with the prompts…so excited.
The rules are simple chose a prompt write a story, draw a picture, make a meme, make a collage, or a music video, or even a soundtrack to the holidays. And submit it here starting on the Winter Solstice Saturday December 21, 2019 and extending to January 6, 2020 the End of the Holiday season…
Bake Off
*Peeta easily wins best baker title in his district with his special ginger bread recipe. But now he’s baking against the best of the districts! Will he be the Mellark that finally brings the grand title to 12? Intrigue! Deception! Sabotage! Bribery! It’s the grand quarter quell bake off has it all! Who will be crowned top baker and forever enjoy the special 25 yr title, fame glory and fortune! Your host Caesar Flickerman, with guest star taste testers including…Katniss desperate, agrees to work as secret agent, get close to Peeta, steal recipe and plans for a very special top secret gingerbread house, mess up his ingredients, make him oversleep after wild sex, anything necessary to keep him from beating the career district contestant! Will Peeta take home the big prize?
*Story of 1000 origami cranes in one year for luck or wish. Peeta makes 1000 (mockingjay) cookies?
D12 Fall Harvest
*Harvest Festival in D12 provides opportunity for all to not only celebrate bounty but also to give thanks, exchange gifts, participate in matching ceremony in anticipation of annual day of matrimony held on the winter solstice. Snapshot of Peeta and Katniss through the years?
*Harvest Festival is competition like Olympics or Highland games? Winners awarded cornucopia of food for the coming winter?
D12 Parcel Day
*The way those Parcel Days could have gone to forge relationship between Peeta and Katniss if it was something more, if for example they had to work together on things like what goes in them (maybe start off cold, then argue over differences, then get to know each other, grow together).
Thanks Giving
First Feast in 1621 lasted 3 days, 90 native Americans Wampanoag and 53 Pilgrims, celebrated successful harvest - feast, games, military exercises, diplomacy. Only 4 of 20 Mayflower women survived to the feast! Men helped cook for the party. No oven. 1863 Lincoln declared holiday. Make Katniss either survivor of voyage or Native?
Christmas & Hanukkah
See Prompt Nine.
New Years
Old college friends dispersed after graduation, but the group meets up every New Years for a night of drinking and catching up on the year and reminiscing and resolutions. At least for a while. But then they drift apart, skip years… until one (ok, I just realized this is getting closer to the movie big chill with every tweak). Or st. Elmo’s fire. But I like the concept of Katniss and Peeta having something in college and kept it secret but something happens and there’s secret is exposed….
Peeta and Katniss have crushes on the other one, attend a masquerade and neither one tells the other what there dressed as and they meet at the party and they do not realize they are attracted to their friend; maybe this can be an arranged marriage effort to match people attracted to each other by personality, not appearance, and the positive match confuses them? Or attendance is a psychology course requirement? (My intro psych had 1,000 students.)
Canon Based Non-Holiday Specific
something about coal…legend that La Befana witch flies down chimney, left gifts for good children, coal for naughty…Epiphany January 6 = end of Christmas season, day 3 wise men arrive manger BUT once Katniss is Victor, has $, sneaks buckets of coal for all the seam children to keep warm fire going, Peeta sneaks small raisin nut loaves? Or maybe this is parcel day beginning of legendary Mockingjay flies and delivers coal and sweet music. Maybe we can leave it like an open-ended thing parcel day in the and the districts how do you think each district celebrated partial day
Prompt #1 A Dog’s New Year’s Eve Prompts -
A dog living on a college campus in Columbia observed that paying cashier = get a cookie. So, for the last 5 years, dog picks up large leaf, carries to cashier, gets cookie, too. What if cashier is lonely baker Peeta? Stray dog actually belongs to Katniss. Because dog always snarls at Haymitch, he calls it “Katniss.” Peeta overhears, assumes the dog is “Katniss.” Haymitch doesn’t correct him.
Peeta reads horoscope for 2019 Year of the Dog: “For single people, they have a large possibility to meet some excellent friends of opposite sex and develop a romantic relationship with one of them.”
Peeta needs to find a date for New Years Eve and is running out of time! Hears Katniss over the radio reading the article he wrote “…Dog girls…need to pursue or express affection of boy dogs bravely. In addition, joining in more social activities on weekends is also an effective way to find true love…” Followed by a “BAHUMBUG Love is dead…dogs do not fall in love…hell like people dogs fall in lust’” Peeta wants to find this woman and set her straight…Love is not a Bahumbug.
What if dog getting too heavy like Columbian dog, vet accuses Katniss feeding dog junk, Katniss follows dog, catches baker feeding her now overweight dog, confronts him. But, Year of the Dog! So, HEA magic.
Prompt Idea #2 (Cultural Holiday)
*Pliny the Elder, a Roman who was one of the world’s first known naturalists, thought the Druids’ beliefs about mistletoe (that “mistletoe, taken in drink, will impart fecundity to all animals that are barren.” and hung it over their doors for luck) were silly, but the reputation stuck thanks in part to a Norse myth: definitely something with mistletoe and drinking its properties to become fertile
*Frigga, goddess of love and marriage, loved her son Baldur so much that she and Baldur’s wife teamed up to make all the world’s plants and animals to promise not to hurt him. Well, they got all the plants, except mistletoe. Loki, god of mischief, realized the mistake and made a spear out of mistletoe and killed Baldur. As Frigga cried over the loss of her son, her motherly tears turned into mistletoe berries. Those berries somehow brought Baldur back to life, so Frigga declared mistletoe to be a symbol of love. According to The Smithsonian magazine, “Mistletoe would come to hang over our doors as a reminder to never forget. We kiss beneath it to remember what Baldur’s wife and mother forgot.”
Prompt Idea #3 Candy Land Hunger Games edition
Weird holiday hunger games - Arena is a winter wonderland of marzipan mutts, “Snow” monster, Peeta and Katniss are gingerbread, she reattaches his leg with frosting, in crystal candy cave he can’t stop from taking a nibble she’s so delicious, it rains lemon drops, it snows powdered sugar, watch out for milk lake danger…

Prompt Idea #6 Tim Burton Holiday
Too much eggnog, Katniss nightmare: Mad Capital scientist builds a “Edward scissorhands” boy mutt but with kitchen gadget appendages. D12 turns on him. Katniss goes on daring journey to find only person who can help. Dr Wires lives underground with oompaloompa-like helpers (former victor mutts).

These are America's 10 most expensive states to live in for 2021
Gas prices are displayed at a Chevron station on June 14, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.
Mario Tama | Getty Images
Prices are rising for a wide array of goods and services as the U.S. confronts a level of inflation not seen in decades. Labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and exploding demand as the pandemic wanes are all adding to pricing pressures. The situation is making it even harder to get by in America’s most expensive states, causing worries for consumers and companies alike.
Companies like to do business in states with a low cost of living, which can be attractive to workers and customers. CNBC’s annual America’s Top States for Business study considers cost of living as a factor in competitiveness, scoring states based on an index of prices for basic items. It is among our ten categories of competitiveness.
We score all 50 states based on an index of items from groceries to housing. Some states keep costs low and are appealing in a new era of pandemic-triggered migration. But not all.
The following are the ten states that were the most expensive to live in last year. We look at where prices have been heading in the volatile first half of this year versus one year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also listed are average prices for selected items, based on the 2020 Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research, C2ER.
10. New Jersey
A ‘For Sale’ sign is displayed outside of a house in Oradell, New Jersey.

While prices in Northern New Jersey can seem like a bargain compared to those across the Hudson River in New York, they don’t look nearly as good when you compare them to the rest of the country. A four-bedroom house in Bergen County will cost more than three times what it would cost in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
2021 Cost of Living score: 15 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New York-Newark-Jersey City): Up 4.1%
Average home price (Bergen County): $615,738
Half gallon of milk: $2.43
Monthly energy bill: $186.37
9. Rhode Island

America’s smallest state has some big costs, like energy. In Providence, expect to pay nearly three times what you would pay in New Orleans to heat and cool your home. And a yoga class in Rhode Island will set you back roughly twice what it would in Anniston, Alabama.
2021 Cost of Living score: 14 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Northeast Region): Up 4.6%
Average home price (Providence): $430,197
Half gallon of milk: $2.52

EGG REPLACEMENT INGREDIENTS MARKET ANALYSIS(2019-2027)
Egg Replacement Ingredients Market, By Ingredient (Starch, Milk Protein Formulation, Soy Products, Algal Flour, Proteins, Others), By Application (Chocolates, Biscuits & Cookies, Cakes/Pastries/Muffins/Breads, Mayonnaise, Noodles & Pasta), By End-user (Commercial (Large Scale Food Manufacturers, Small Scale Food Manufacturers), Household), By Form (Liquid, powder), and By Region (North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific (APAC), Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA)) - Size, Share, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2019 – 2027
Egg Replacement Ingredients Market:
Egg Replacement Ingredient Market 2017–2027
Egg replacement ingredients are the ideal substitute for egg and are widely used to replace the egg content in the food. These ingredients reduce the egg content without affecting the taste and nutritional value of the food products. They are produced from various ingredients such as milk, modified food starch, etc. These ingredients are widely used across biscuits & cookies, cakes, chocolate, pastries, bread, noodles & pastas, and mayonnaise. Moreover, they are also used in savories, spreads, and dressings. The egg replacement ingredients are a low-fat or low-cholesterol alternative to whole eggs and are ideal for the consumer who does not want to eat meat and preferred plant-based products.
The global egg replacement ingredients market is projected to reach around US$ 1622.1 million by the end of 2027, in terms of revenue, growing at CAGR of 5.6% during the forecast period (2019-2027).
Drivers
The shortage of egg crisis due to avian influenza is projected to propel the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. For instance, in 2015, 48.1 million of hens, turkeys and other birds were killed due to H5N2 virus (avian flu) in the U.S. The cost of dead poultry was estimated to be approximately US$ 191 Million. The total economic damage of the outbreak in Midwestern U.S. state alone was estimated at US$ 957 Million. This is expected to fuel market growth.
Rising demand for plant-based ingredients is expected to accelerate the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. Shifting preferences of consumers towards natural ingredients product is projected to support the market growth of these ingredients such as agar, starch and soy as they are naturally produced from plants. Therefore, rising demand for plant-based ingredients is expected to accelerate the market growth of egg replacement ingredients.
On basis of the region, North America dominated the global egg replacement ingredients market in 2018, accounting for 53% share in terms of value, followed by Europe, Middle East & Africa and Asia Pacific.
Figure 1. Global Egg Replacement Ingredients Market, Revenue Share (%), By Region, 2018
Market Restraints
Egg replacement ingredients do not deliver the same taste as an egg does is projected to hamper the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. Moreover, these ingredients do not provide the color, same lift, and mouth feel. Hence, the issue associated with the taste and the flavor is expected to hinder the market growth of egg replacement ingredients.
Lack of awareness regarding the egg substitute products across the developing region is expected to curb the market growth of egg replacement ingredients over the forecast period.
Market Opportunities
Growth in a number of vegan populations around the globe is projected to propel the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. In 2018, the UK launched more vegan products than any nation. According to the Vegan Society, the demand for meat-free food in the UK increased by 987% in 2017 and going vegan was predicted to be the biggest food trend in 2018. Moreover, the UK plant-based market was worth £443m in 2018.
Growing bakeries & cafes are expected to create huge demand for eggless cakes which in turn propel the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. According to the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Canadian bakery product market is expected to grow at a compound annualized rate of 3.4% from 2018-2022. Moreover, bread sales accounted for the largest portion of baked goods sales each year. In 2017, bread sales accounted for $3.5 billion (USD) or almost 63% of total sales that years.
Figure 2. Global Egg Replacement Ingredients Market– Opportunity Analysis
Market Trends
Contentious product innovation by manufacturers is a major trend that has been observed in the market and this is expected to fuel the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. For instance, in October 2019, Zero Egg has developed a nutritious plant-based liquid the egg that tastes, looks, and functions like a real egg and can be used as an egg substitute in any recipe, including omelets, baked goods, mayonnaise, sauces, and more. Zero egg has a high nutritional value and no cholesterol.
Rising demand for gluten-free, non-GMO egg replacement ingredient is expected to fuel the market growth of egg replacement ingredients. According to the Coherent Market Insights, U.S-based Fiberstar offers a non-GMO clean label eggs replacement ingredient to consumers. The ingredient is derived from natural citrus fiber and enables partial or full replacement of egg for food applications such as baked goods, gluten-free bakery products, mayonnaise, dairy-based desserts, meat products, and others.
Figure 3. Global Egg Replacement Ingredients Market, Revenue Share (%), By Application, in 2018
On the basis of application in 2018, the mayonnaise segment has accounted the largest market share of 38.2% in terms of value, followed by cakes/pastries/muffins/breads and biscuits & cookies respectively.
Competitive Section
Key players operating in global egg replacement ingredients market are Corbion NV, Glanbia Plc, Tate & Lyle Plc, Ingredion Incorporated, Ener-G Foods, Inc., Natural Products, Inc., Orchard Valley Foods, Puratos Group, Solazyme, Inc., and Archer Daniels Midland Company

How To Build Concrete Mold For Projects
We have set the industry standard for years and every member of our team is committed to supplying a superior product https://columbiamachine.com/concrete-molds/. Easy to cut yet sturdy enough to hold concrete in a rectangular form as it cures, an empty milk carton offers huge potential as a concrete mold.
Betonnen Looppad Pad Maker
Look how naturally the shape lends itself to a modern desk lamp. To achieve this low-cost luminary all it takes is nesting another commonly upcycled item—a plastic bottle—inside the carton, then pouring Quikrete 5000 into the space between the bottle and carton. A power drill and your own two hands can take it from there.
Learn the benefits of using different mold types to help you choose the best one for your project. AeroMarine Products has several great products for making concrete molds and stamps from. Here we have gathered pins for ideas and inspiration for what to do with concrete and AeroMarine Concrete Molding & Stamping Rubber. The great advantage of rubber molds is their flexibility. Сoncrete molds
Picked it up at Lowe's but HomeDepot and other places sell them too. Just mix up the crete per directions that usually come with it put in into the mold, smooth it out, wait a minute or two and lift off and do your next one. I'm enlarging my back patio by going around the existing 10 X 16 pad with this. I plan to stain all with brush on concrete stain when I'm finished. I can only do a little at a time as I have a bad back and have to limit myself on this kind of work.
Unlike other precast systems on the market that leave one side non-textured, the designs from Walttools are meant to be viewed on all sides and are fully detailed on all visible planes. The initial models replicate stacked brick, natural slate, re-purposed barnwood, and flagstone.
All of our high quality, platinum-cured silicone molds are hand made in our building and ship direct to clients world-wide. Why is my mold cut along the side9 ----Sometimes, it is necessary to cut along the side of the mold for demolding purpose. Our hardworking concrete molds set the standard in the industry by producing perfect products for countless cycles. Concrete molds add a new dimension, quite literally, to your concrete products lineup. They expand your capabilities by allowing you to offer products that look and perform beautifully and can be used for many different purposes.

Our precast concrete mold line includes everything from burial vault forms to water basin molds also called catch basin forms. We have standard Precast Concrete forms and we also customize our concrete molds to your specs. Of course we make many more varieties of form/molds, just click on molds/forms above to navigate to them. As described in the Mixing and Pouring Lesson, mix the concrete until a good water to cement ratio is achieved, then scoop a small amount of the aggregate-free concrete mix into the molds.
We were at an advantage in that we have a small electric concrete mixer but mixing the 'crete in a wheelbarrow wouldn't be that difficult. Walttools has four new urethane pre-cast molds that each provide exceptionally detailed concrete bench creations. The initial four models being released cover a variety of styles and sizes to fit almost any landscape environment.
We believe that honesty & integrity is still the most important part of any business. We will do our best to be up front and honest with you. If you see any part of our business that needs to be changed to better serve you, then we would appreciate hearing from you.
Texas Tradition Molds tries to keep molds in stock year round. Texas Tradition Molds, also offers a instock page.
Once the concrete's dry, drill holes in the sides of the lamp, then wire in a bulb to create a subtle light source to brighten up any dark corner of the home. Through decades of research and development, Polytek is able to offer one of the most comprehensive selections of flexible mold materials for concrete casting applications. History Stones concrete baluster mold is injection molded of ABS plastic for superior strength. Two halves bolt together for easy casting and removal . Often, the silicone concrete molds are listed as resin molds, so if you are doing a Google or Amazon search to find one, you may get more results by searching for “resin” molds.
Rockmolds Liquid Release 1 Gallon
Before pouring your concrete mix into the molds it's a good idea to use a release agent, this will make removing the concrete from the mold after it has cured very easy. we'll have to take that into account before starting a mix. Even pea gravel aggregate can be much too large for small molds, so consider what you are casting into to determine if you need or want to remove aggregate. Polyester auto body filler (Bondo® for example) is a great material for creating fillets, building up shapes, smoothing curves, tool marks or for general sculpting. It can be used alone, with plastics, fiberglass and other mold materials.
Concrete is, and will remain, an elemental construction element; and even as its materiality remains consistent over time, its limits are far from being fully explored. History has demonstrated that concrete construction is mainly determined by the mold used and not in the material itself.
It sands easily when mixed properly and allowed to cure. Capitalize on quality precast products for all of your building component molds. Norwalk Precast Molds specializes in utility vaults that feature straight inner walls by incorporating our hydraulic collapsing core option. If your application requires 50 foot column molds, 20 foot T-wall molds or thousands of linear feet of duct bank or trench drain molds, Norwalk Precast Molds has a unique solution for your project.
Looking forward to trying some different projects with the same technique. Manufacturer of plastic, concrete and patio stone molds. Applications include artistic, garden, letters and numbers, masonry and building, pavers, stepping stones, steps, retarder papers, retaining walls, and vibrating tables. Our artistic department and production line technicians have more than a decade of experience in offering high quality products to our clients.
The wood and flagstone models can even be mixed-and-matched with their tops and bases. Hi Barb, just wanted to extend my thanks for the excellent tutorial. I’d been wanting to try making concrete doll head planters but was scared off by the expense and technical processes involved in silicone mold making. This method worked great for me and I’m now at 12 planters and counting.
Many of our forms have no particular size like shrub planter boxes. Just give us your size and we will quote you by phone, email, fax, or US mail.
When you remove the mold you can kind of smooth off any rough edges with your hands or a wooden stick. Grandma, we just finished (last night!) a patio made with the quikrete form that looks like stones.

Why Washington’s Walla Walla Is a Region to Watch
In many ways Walla Walla, Wash., is like any small, upwardly mobile American community. The placid, easily walkable downtown has busy independent bookstores like Earthlight Books, which hosts beer tastings and highlights local artists. The patios of the streetside bars and restaurants are filled with smiling people wearing Patagonia fleeces and expensive sunglasses. You can buy artisanal goat’s milk soap.
The tourist-filled streets of Walla Walla are a recent phenomenon, though, and one brought about explicitly by wine. While the area is still best known to people from the West Coast, it’s becoming a notable region in American winemaking, with parallels that some winemakers, such as Steve Robertson of Delmas Wines, who learned to make wine in Napa Valley in the 1980s, say are strikingly similar to Napa before its winemaking boom in the ’70s and ’80s. Back then, says Robertson, Napa “looked very much and felt very much like Walla Walla does today.”
It was winemakers like Robertson, Gary and Nancy Figgins of Leonetti Cellar, Jim McClellan and Herbert Hendricks of Seven Hills Winery, and Rick Small and Darcey Fugman-Small of Woodward Canyon Winery who pioneered winemaking in the area. The Figgins planted Walla Walla’s very first vitis vinifera vines back in 1974, and with Leonetti Cellar, they officially established the region’s first commercial winery in 1977. The Smalls planted Woodward Canyon’s grapevines in 1978, and the winery was bonded in 1981.
Some 40 years later their example has been followed by relative newcomers like Valdemar Estates, an extension of the 130-year-old Spanish company Bodegas Valdemar. The well-regarded Washington winery Force Majeure — whose estate vineyard is located in the Red Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the Yakima Valley — now also has vineyard space in The Rocks District of Walla Walla and in an area called The North Fork that’s not an officially recognized sub-AVA. Smaller wineries like Prospice, which sources its grapes from local vineyards such as Seven Hills, are another feature of the growing wine scene.
Lodging in the area is also seeing an expansion. The Finch, a newly renovated 80-room hotel, recently opened in downtown Walla Walla. Another arrival is The Barn B&B Walla Walla, a seven-suite bed-and-breakfast on the western side of the city that opened in April 2019. Anand Rao, who owns The Barn with his wife Naina, says they were drawn to the area both because of the wine scene and the incredible natural beauty. “When we bought the land in 2007, there were only about 23 wineries,” he says. By the time The Barn opened there were more than 140. “We just saw a future for food and wine and tourism.”
A Region on the Rise
One of the things that’s so remarkable about Walla Walla is the fact that it’s still a place where you can interact with the people who literally planted the first vines in the region — and learn what it was like back then in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
“Although Walla Walla was surely a diversified agricultural town, it was not a wine town,” says Rick Small, who was born and raised in Walla Walla. He also emphasizes that the area isn’t a typical farming community. “We have three colleges here, and people traveled,” he says. “The people that farmed here and had businesses here were well educated. And because they traveled, they were much more open to other agricultural possibilities.”
Officially recognized in February 1984, the Walla Walla AVA sits in eastern Washington and is a part of the much larger Columbia River AVA, a geographically massive area that comprises more than 90 percent of Washington’s vineyard acreage. Walla Walla is in a remote corner, close enough to the Oregon border that part of the AVA actually extends beyond the state line.
Sennen David, the vice president of marketing and culture and beverage director for the Seattle-based Ethan Stowell Restaurants (ESR) group, says Walla Walla is “the spot that’s the capital of the Washington wine industry.” He describes current-day Walla Walla as being defined by its colleges and its wine, adding that “it would otherwise be such a sleepy area.”

Walla Walla’s rising prominence hasn’t come easy, though. Casey McClellan, a native of Walla Walla and the general manager and winemaker of Seven Hills Winery, didn’t expect to return to the town as an adult. “I didn’t think I’d be back,” he says.
Seven Hills was established by Casey’s father Jim McClellan and his business partner Herbert Hendricks. The senior McClellan and Hendricks were both physicians who came from multi-generational Walla Walla farming families. Both knew they wanted to return to their family roots in agriculture, but also didn’t want to raise wheat. They planted their grapevines in 1982, and when the winery officially opened in 1988, they became part of the first cohort of vintners in the region.
When Casey was growing up in Walla Walla, tasting rooms simply didn’t exist. These days, the town attracts both national and international visitors — and talent — thanks to wineries like Seven Hills and the legacy started by the McClellan family and the region’s other winemaking trailblazers. “I really didn’t hesitate when it was time to come back,” says Casey, who discussed the prospect with his wife. “We debated different places to move to, but you don’t get a chance that often to help create an appellation.”
Spearheading New Sub-Appellations
This same potential drew in Christophe Baron, the first international vintner in the region. His winery, Cayuse Vineyards, produces wine from grapes cultivated with 100 percent biodynamic farming methods. His critically acclaimed wines are sought after by many, and in 2018, he spoke about practicing biodynamic viticulture in Walla Walla to a packed room at Robert Parker’s 40th anniversary conference.
Originally from Champagne, Baron was hoping to work in Oregon’s Willamette Valley but took an internship in Walla Walla in 1993 when a friend working for Waterbrook Winery needed to leave his job early. “For a 23-year-old French man, there was not much action, not much going on,” he says. “A handful of wineries, only a few restaurants, and the quality was not very high. There was no great food or fine dining back in the day.”

Baron decided to stay in Walla Walla when he discovered a plot of land in a copse of apple orchards that was covered in large round stones. It reminded him of the galets and terroir in France’s southern Rhône Valley and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In March 1997, he planted the first 10 acres of vines in Milton-Freewater, a part of Walla Walla that’s now recognized as its own sub-AVA called The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, but is more simply known as The Rocks District. (Baron says he prefers to call the area The Stones.)

Delmas’s Robertson was the person responsible for spearheading the effort to have The Rocks District recognized as its own AVA, which occurred in February 2015. Robertson’s desire to have The Rocks District designated as its own sub-AVA within Walla Walla was born in part out of a recognition that the land, which is perfectly suited for varieties like Syrah and Grenache, also has its own distinctive terroir. He says that while he initially faced significant resistance from other winemakers in the community —whom he believes were afraid of diluting Walla Walla’s not-quite-established street cred — when the application was filed with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, not a single letter of dissent was submitted.
“It’s so exciting, I can’t even tell you,” Robertson says. “I am 67 years old, and I am as pumped up as I have ever been in my working career to be a part of this. It’s really no different from how I felt when I was 33 and moved to Napa Valley.”
Woodward Canyon’s Rick Small feels similarly. “It’s incredible to have been near the start of this and to see what it’s become … and, of course, to contemplate where it’s going.”
It’s this attitude, and wine from estates like Seven Hills, Delmas, Cayuse, and Woodward Canyon, that are propelling Walla Walla into becoming a true, internationally recognized appellation.
“I think people can feel or sense momentum, and Walla Walla has got momentum,” says McClellan of Seven Hills. “Whatever degree it is, people can see things are escalating and growing here, and you want to grab onto that. I think that’s why people are willing to take that risk, because they can see there is a chance that this could be so much bigger — and they could be part of it.”

Seth Goldman Is a Startup Branding Ninja, From Honest Tea to Beyond
Seth Goldman has managed to achieve a rare trifecta for an entrepreneur: Start a successful company and sell it to a bigger entity; continue running his brainchild with the greater resources of a larger parent; launch another successful startup. All while keeping his integrity (and sanity) and having fun.
He co-founded Honest Tea 20 years ago (with Barry Nalebuff of the Yale School of Management) as a unique brand of organic bottled teas that are “just a tad sweet.” Already a father of three, he took a gamble and quit his job to focus full-time on growing the company.
He sold the brand to Coca-Cola in 2008 and stayed on as “TeaEO” Emeritus to help guide the brand’s growth while enjoying Coca-Cola’s financial, distribution and marketing clout.
Now, while he’s starring in a new advertising campaign for Honest Tea, he’s also providing expertise and guidance as executive chairman and advisor to Beyond Meat.
youtube
In that latter role, he is seeking to revolutionize the non-meat “meat” business with vegetable proteins that it has engineered into “chicken” tenders, “beef” burgers and other products. Goldman also is a board member of Ripple, a fast-growing maker of milk analogs from pea protein.
Goldman has been heavily involved in the burgeoning better-for-you food-and-beverage business in the U.S. since he leveraged his simple proposition for Honest Tea into a powerhouse brand.
He helped secure significant space on grocery shelves, and, ultimately, interest from a beverage giant that has spent the last decade trying to diversify into healthier beverages—making Honest Tea a natural choice for the Coca-Cola Company to acquire.
youtube
In the 20th anniversary “Honest Adventure” campaign that’s now running across cable networks and on Hulu, Goldman makes his first appearance in advertising for the brand. He’s shown talking with farmers in a United Nilgiri Tea Estate garden in Korakundah, India, discussing the heritage of the brand, including its “fair trade” sustainability ethos.
Honest Tea also is introducing three new flavors featuring on-trend ingredients, including Golden Turmeric Pineapple Herbal Tea. And the brand has redesigned glass bottles, in a taller, slimmer silhouette that now are available nationwide containing 15 flavors.
“Honest Tea is now at a place where we’re finally harvesting all that effort,” Goldman told us last year. “In our struggling days, I used to daydream about moments like this.”
youtube
Meanwhile, Goldman has been bringing his expertise to bear as a guiding force for Ripple and for Beyond Meat, each of whose founders are trying to revolutionize and reinvent categories that long have been dominated by animal products. Each brand’s strategy has been to mainstream plant-based products for meat and dairy consumers and “flexitarians” as well as for vegetarians, so Goldman has been helping them with that positioning.
Beyond Meat, for instance, is marketing the Beyond Burger, which tastes, chews and even behaves more like meat than previous plant-based products, even “bleeding” with red plant juices during the cooking process.
“Our point of view is that we think of ourselves as part of the meat industry, but we do it with plant-based meat,” Goldman told us. “We think of ourselves as part of that spectrum. And we talk about transforming the [grocery storey] meat case into the protein case.”
Beyond Burger continues to expand its foodservice and supermarket footprint with new distribution deals at A&W restaurants in Canada and at Tesco stores in the UK. As a result of such moves and growing expansion internationally, Beyond Meat plans to triple its manufacturing footprint in Columbia, Mo.
“Both Ripple and Beyond Meat bring taste- and texture-competitive products to market,” Goldman said. “That’s where we have the opportunity with mainstream customers—in ways that veggie burgers and soy milks in their first iterations didn’t succeed.”
