( Rapaport Magazine ) - How white is a rare white diamond? Is it whiter than exclusively white? What does the term "First Water", "Jager", "River", "Top Wesselton" and "Cape" mean when it comes to determining the price of a diamond? There was a time when these traditional terms were the only words used in the trade to describe white diamonds.
Before the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) introduced its color grading system with the letter designation "D" to "Z" for white diamonds in 1953, dealers around the world used such terms to describe and evaluate their stones . But it was not a very accurate system. "Top Wesselton" ("the supreme wesselton") one person could have the category "F", and another stone with the same designation could be classified as "G". This is not surprising, as Beny Sofer of New York's BenySofer Inc says: "We used to sit in the Diamond Dealer Club and fight each other" for classification indicators.
Many of these initial key terms for classifying the color of diamonds are associated with the geographical names of South Africa, since South Africa has been a major source of diamonds and diamonds since the late 1800s. "Wesselton" was a kimberlite pipe, on which many fine white gemstones were extracted and which became part of the Kimberley underground mine back in 1892. "Cape" refers to diamonds from mines in the province of the Cape of Good Hope (Cape of Good Hope), which has a yellowish tinge. "Jager" comes from the name of the Jagersfontein mine, known for its bluish-white diamonds; This term is used to describe fluorescence. General notations, for example, "river" (river) and "fest water" ("first water") refer to diamonds obtained from alluvial diamonds.
The transition from these rather vague terms to more precise letter designations began in the 1940s when the Gemological Institute of America began to use the new color grading system as a teaching tool, says Tom Moses, vice president and head of the laboratory at the GIA. "Richard Liddicoat worked on it," Moses explains. - At that time, most dealers denominated diamonds with the letters "A", then "AA", "AAA", etc., and Liddykout wanted to create something objective. He worked with the industry to determine gradations, selecting reference diamonds and creating a color scale. Until 1960, this scale was used mainly for gemological students who studied the classification of diamonds. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, more and more dealers turned to the GIA with a request to apply a letter color grading system from "D" to "Z", which she used in classes, to their stones. The scheme of color classification of the Gemological Institute of America turned into a valuable tool for dealers. If the old term "river" refers to a stone that has a color from "D" to "F," they wanted to know what color their stone had - D, E or F "?
The GIA system, with its easy-to-use lettering, has surpassed all the diamond color classification systems that existed before. Some improvement has continued for several decades as dealers and the GIA itself have sought to create the most objective and most accurate and clearly defined system, as far as possible.
BUILDING ORDER
Meanwhile, other organizations continued to treat the issue of color classification in their own way and from their point of view. In 1966, the American Gem Society (AGS) developed a digital system, suggesting that the numbers would be the most scientific way. Its system, which in AGS was limited to its members, begins with the category "0" (equivalent to "D"); Then the graduation moves half a point to "2" for "H" and to "4" for "L", reaching the final category "10", similar to the letter categories "XZ".
In 1975, two prominent organizations of the industry, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and the International Diamond Manufacturers' Association (IDMA), formed the International Diamond Council. A special purpose of the council was to develop a "set of universally recognized standards for the nomenclature for diamonds in international trade in diamonds." But the terms proposed by this council were unlikely to clarify or provide an estimate of the diamonds. We used such fuzzy definitions as "exceptionally white", "rare white", "white with a light tinge", etc., to "shade 1", which corresponded to "M" on the GIA scale, and "shade 2", which Covered everything from "N" to "R" on the GIA scale.
WITH LETTERS IN LETTERS "A" IS FINISHED
Part of the initial work of the GIA over its classification system, which has evolved over time, was carried out jointly with the American Society of Precious Stones in the 1930s. This system of color estimation from the very beginning stood separately, it just started with the letter "D". The first letters of the alphabet, especially the "A", became so worn out, and they were so abused by the time that Liddikout wanted this new system to start from scratch. He believed that no one would abuse the letter "D", which until then was a color grading category that meant "almost failing" for students who studied gemology.
The earliest version of the system developed for exclusive use by AGS participants has been used by them since the early 1940s. This system was taught to jewelers by Liddikout and other GIA instructors, including Bert Krashes and G. Robert Crowningshield. It was then that the value of the system using the notation "D" to "Z" began to increase.
LIGHTING
Of course, it is important that the universal assessment system be applied in a coherent, identical environment, if accurate and reliable results are needed. The creation of equal conditions for the evaluation constantly worried the dealers, who already in 1880 knew about the influence of the environment on the color development in a diamond.
First of all, it was necessary to solve the issue of lighting. Even before the GIA, diamantaires were advised to use "good north light" only between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to assess the diamonds, and always evaluate in the same place. One of the first changes introduced by the system of the Gemological Institute of America was to get rid of "good northern lighting," which in itself was an indefinite, indefinite standard. The requirement of coherence all increased, as more and more people came to the industry, and the lighting of jewelers, naturally, varied in different places. See https://bridalpearlnecklace.tumblr.com/
For several decades, the GIA honed and improved both the setting in which the inspection and the lighting should be conducted in this place to create a more uniform environment for evaluation. Even the useful life of lamps should be considered, because fluorescent lamps tend to fade long before they burn out. Although the average lamp life is about 5,000 hours, the GIA has determined its useful life to be less than half that time, and the institute replaces the lamps after they used only 1,800 hours.
In 1941, George M. Shipley and Liddykoute introduced the GIA colorimeter, a visual color comparison device, a color scale that represents evaluation categories, a standardized light source and an environment for inspection. They also offered services for the classification of reference or reference diamonds for jewelers AGS. This allowed to form the basis for the current classification standards.
