Contact Us On: +971 52 747 2414
Cancer is one of the most pressing health challenges worldwide, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is no exception. With a rapidly growing population and increasing cancer rates, the need for specialized cancer care in MENA has never been more critical. The region has made significant progress in developing cancer treatment facilities, implementing advanced technologies, and improving patient care. However, there are still many challenges to overcome, including access to treatment, affordability, and awareness.
In this guide, we will explore the current state of Cancer Care Specialties Mena, highlight advancements in treatment, discuss existing challenges, and look at future possibilities for improving cancer care in the region.
The Growing Burden of Cancer in MENA
Cancer is becoming a major public health concern in the MENA region, with increasing cases of lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancers. Several factors contribute to this rise, including:
Aging Population – As life expectancy increases, so does the risk of developing cancer.
Lifestyle Changes – Rising obesity rates, smoking, and unhealthy diets contribute to cancer growth.
Environmental Factors – Pollution and exposure to carcinogens impact cancer rates.
Lack of Awareness – Many people are unaware of early symptoms and preventive measures.
With cancer rates projected to increase further, investing in specialized cancer care is essential to address this growing burden effectively.
Specialized Cancer Treatment Centers in MENA
Several hospitals and medical centers in MENA have become regional leaders in cancer treatment. Some of the most prominent cancer care facilities include:
King Hussein Cancer Center (Jordan) – A world-class cancer treatment and research facility offering comprehensive care.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (UAE) – Equipped with state-of-the-art oncology departments providing advanced treatment.
National Cancer Institute of Egypt – One of the oldest and largest cancer research and treatment centers in the region.
Saudi Cancer Center (KSA) – Part of a national initiative to enhance cancer care and research.
American University of Beirut Medical Center (Lebanon) – A leading institution in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research.
These centers specialize in various treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and precision medicine, offering hope to thousands of cancer patients in the region.
Advancements in Cancer Treatment in MENA
The MENA region has witnessed remarkable advancements in cancer treatment in recent years. Some of the key innovations include:
1. Precision Medicine and Personalized Treatment
Precision medicine is revolutionizing cancer treatment by customizing therapies based on a patient’s genetic profile. Countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia have invested in genomic research to develop targeted cancer therapies, improving treatment outcomes.
2. Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapies
Immunotherapy, which enhances the body's immune system to fight cancer, has gained popularity in MENA. Hospitals are now offering advanced immunotherapy treatments, particularly for lung cancer, melanoma, and leukemia.
3. Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Procedures
Robotic-assisted surgery allows for greater precision in tumor removal, leading to shorter recovery times and fewer complications. Many leading hospitals in MENA have adopted robotic surgery for treating prostate, colorectal, and gynecologic cancers.
4. Advanced Radiation Therapy
Proton therapy and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) are now available in some specialized centers. These treatments target cancer cells with high precision, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
Challenges in Cancer Care in MENA
Despite significant advancements, several challenges still hinder effective cancer care in MENA:
1. Limited Access to Specialized Treatment
Many patients, particularly those in rural areas, struggle to access specialized cancer treatment centers. Most advanced cancer care facilities are concentrated in major cities, making it difficult for patients in remote areas to receive timely treatment.
2. High Treatment Costs
Cancer treatment is expensive, and not all patients can afford advanced therapies. While some countries provide government-funded healthcare, others rely on private healthcare systems, making affordability a major concern.
3. Late Diagnosis and Lack of Awareness
Many cancer cases in MENA are diagnosed at later stages due to a lack of routine screenings and awareness campaigns. Late diagnosis reduces survival rates and increases treatment complexity.
4. Shortage of Oncologists and Specialized Medical Staff
The demand for oncologists, radiologists, and specialized nurses is increasing, but the supply is not keeping pace. Many countries in MENA face a shortage of trained cancer specialists, leading to longer waiting times for patients.
Future Prospects: Improving Cancer Care in MENA
To enhance cancer care in MENA, governments, healthcare institutions, and organizations must work together to address these challenges. Some potential solutions include:
1. Expanding Cancer Treatment Centers
Investing in new cancer treatment facilities, particularly in underserved areas, will improve access to specialized care. Mobile cancer screening units can also help detect cancer early in remote locations.
2. Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Prevention
Public awareness campaigns about cancer risk factors, early symptoms, and the importance of regular screenings can lead to early detection and better treatment outcomes.
3. Strengthening Medical Education and Training
Increasing the number of oncologists and specialized healthcare professionals through education and training programs will help meet the growing demand for cancer care specialists.
4. Implementing Government Support Programs
Governments should introduce policies that provide financial support for cancer patients, ensuring access to affordable treatment options. Subsidized treatments and health insurance coverage for cancer patients can make a significant difference.
5. Investing in Research and Innovation
Collaboration between MENA countries and international research institutions can accelerate advancements in cancer treatment. Establishing cancer research centers and promoting clinical trials will contribute to finding better treatment solutions.
Conclusion
Cancer care specialists in Dubai region have seen significant progress, with specialized treatment centers and advanced therapies improving patient outcomes. However, challenges such as limited access, high treatment costs, and late diagnosis still exist. By expanding healthcare infrastructure, increasing awareness, and investing in research, MENA can continue to improve its cancer care capabilities and offer better treatment options for patients.

Emirati woman beats colon cancer at the young age of 26
A young Emirati woman beat colon cancer after doctors in Abu Dhabi removed a small part of her intestine.
Bedoor Jassem, 26, said she had been suffering from abdominal pain for a few years.
When the pain became unbearable she went to Sheikh Shkhabout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi for a check-up and was told to get her appendix removed.
During the appendix surgery in 2019, doctors discovered that she had colon cancer.
In the past, colon cancer was called an old person’s disease but more and more young people are getting it now.
“Cancer does not respect age. Unfortunately, we are seeing patients in their 20s and 30s with the disease,” said Dr Noura Al Ali, a colorectal surgeon at Sheikh Shkhabout Medical City.
“Bedoor was lucky. We took her for an appendectomy (the surgery to remove the appendix when it is infected) and once the appendix was removed we discovered that there was a tumour."
"Luckily the tumour did not spread and was in its earliest stages. Apart from robotic surgery, she did not require any further treatment but we removed a small part of the intestine.
“We do not recommend screening for people at this age but we do recommend seeking help if there are any red flags such as a change in bowel habits, bleeding, unexplained weight loss and others.”
Colorectal cancer screenings usually begin when people are 40 and above.
Dr Al Ali said that many patients refuse to undergo screening.
“We have patients who have refused to get a colonoscopy after a stool test confirmed they did have something abnormal," she said.
"They will come to us two to three years later with advanced disease. Many are embarrassed to get screened and there is a lot of ignorance about the importance of screening.
“If you fit the criteria, then do get screened because we can prevent colorectal cancers through appropriate screening."
She said the numbers were increasing globally and colon cancer is the second most common cancer in the UAE.
“It isn’t the disease of the old anymore and numbers are increasing. We don’t know if it is diet, lifestyle, vitamin deficiencies, probably a combination of all, but even that doesn’t explain why younger people are getting colon cancer,” she said.
Ms Jassem, who works in a government department, urged people to visit a doctor if they suffer from any pain or have abnormal symptoms.
"Going to the emergency department is not the same thing as going to a doctor and having all your regular screenings and tests done," she said.
"I ignored the pain for too long and only went to a doctor when the pain was so unbearable that I was unable to move."
Last month, SSMC surveyed people 40 and above to gauge their perceptions about colorectal screening.
Sixty-three per cent of the respondents said a lack of symptoms was the main reason they did not get screened while 88 per cent said they had never been screened for the disease.
The survey showed that 77 per cent of the people were more concerned about getting diabetes and 35 per cent were more worried about obesity.

Fifty-five per cent of the Emirati participants said a fear of pain, discovering that they have an illness, shame or embarrassment held them back from getting screened.
“Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in the UAE and one of the leading causes of cancer deaths but remains one of the easiest cancers to prevent," Dr Michael Wallace, gastroenterology and hepatology consultant and chair of the department at SSMC said.
"However, we find that there are real barriers and misconceptions that prevail when it comes to screening for this cancer, which is a true challenge. If colorectal cancer is detected early, that is, before patients start showing symptoms, up to 95 per cent of cases are curable."

How To Recover From Cancer Using Integrative Cancer Therapies | Christine's Story
No need for the flu shot use The Hydrogen Peroxide Ear Treatment
How To Recover From Cancer Using Integrative Cancer Therapies | Christine’s Story https://www.anoasisofhealing.com/patient-testimonials/ If you want to learn how to recover from cancer using integrative cancer therapies, then you should read Christine’s incredible story. An Oasis of Healing has been allowed to share Christine S.’s health restoration story. We believe you will find this incredibly inspiring. Christine came from Abu Dhabi to stay with us at our healing center. Back in 2013, she had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Her doctors told her it was localized and instructed Christine to undergo the cut, burn and poison protocol otherwise known as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. She went through a horrific and traumatic experience of conventional treatments. Christine has not realized at the time that other cancer treatment options existed. After finishing her conventional treatments, her doctors said her cancer was gone. They congratulated her and said she could go home. In less than a year from that day, she had a CT scan. This was to check for reoccurrence. Cancer had returned to her lungs in three different places. It shook her that cancer returned so quickly. Her mind was made up if cancer came back she would not go the way of conventional treatments again. These treatments didn’t sense to her and she would search for alternatives to them. Christine never understood why these doctors would give her as a sick person such poisonous treatments such as chemotherapy. She now had lung cancer diagnosed as stage four. She was actively searching for other treatment options. The conventional doctors let her know that she would not live past nine months if she didn’t follow their suggested protocol. Christine found Dr. Thomas Lodi’s videos online. Upon watching several of An Oasis of Healings videos, her mind was made up to head to Mesa, AZ. In her own words, the experience while at An Oasis of Healing was “even better than she expected it to be”. She felt the staff listened to her intently and that was important to her. Christine said, “An Oasis of Healing has been very accommodating and lovely”. An Oasis of Healing helps you see that you are responsible and in control of your health. At their healing center, you are an active participant with your treatments. Christine said she met several people at An Oasis of Healing that also went through the harsh conventional treatments she had experienced. Hearing their success stories inspired her greatly. She stated she felt that she received the best of everything at our center. Meeting Dr. Goodyear, in her opinion, was unlike meeting any other doctor she ever had prior. Christine’s words were, “Dr. Goodyear is so kind, so humble so compassionate and so knowledgeable”. And meeting Dr. Mel who is a Naturopathic doctor was incredible as well. Having these two amazing doctors combined the best of two worlds for me from both the alternative and conventional side of things. She said the nurses and all staff members were incredibly supportive. Christine looked forward to each morning’s treatments and therapies because all the nurses always smiled, laughed and joked with her. She said, “they always managed to make me feel loved and welcome”. Christine said that “she has never been in a place where every single person was so special, and it really is the case here at An Oasis of Healing”. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgEvpazxx5NO6hb7a1M8pWbhr-jvWtIaX https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR0Y7icMoXgQZaepRkJlHzg/videos [Read More ...]

Keyhole surgery saves women with colon cancer tumour
Last updated on March 17, 2018 at 10.15 pm
The UAE is on an improved awareness drive on the incidence of colorectal cancer, and one among the latest remedial procedures performed was a recent surgery on a 39-year-old woman patient.
Doctors at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performed keyhole surgery to save her life, after discovering she had a 5cm malignant tumour in her colon after she was hospitalised in Dubai with an unrelated stomach bug.
Her case highlights the importance of regular colon cancer screening, especially for patients with a family history of the disease, say doctors.
"One of the biggest problems with detecting it is that, unlike many other forms of cancer, colon cancer can be completely symptomless," said Dr Shafik Sidani, staff physician, colorectal surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. "We urge anyone with a strong family history of colon cancer, even if they are under the recommended screening age of 40 years, to visit their healthcare provider and get checked out for this disease."
As part of a series of tests, doctors used capsule endoscopy - a procedure that uses a tiny wireless camera inside a vitamin-sized capsule to take pictures of the digestive tract. It revealed that Simran was bleeding from a tumour in her cecum, the point next to the appendix where the small intestine meets the large intestine.
After reviewing the results of her capsule endoscopy, Dr. Pascale Anglade, staff physician, gastroenterology and hepatology in the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, suggested Simran have a full colonoscopy, including a biopsy of the tumour. This revealed that the tumour was malignant and measured around five centimeters.
"It was only then that I started to think about my own family history," explained Simran. "None of my immediate family had colon cancer, but I had an uncle and a cousin who had both been diagnosed with colon cancer at their younger ages."
Based on this evidence, the doctors diagnosed the patient with a condition called Lynch Syndrome, a genetic disorder that increases her risk of developing colon cancer and other cancers. Doctors estimate that around three out of every 100 colon cancers are caused by Lynch Syndrome.
The results also meant that the best course of action was to have a right hemi-colectomy - surgery to remove the part of her colon affected by the tumour. A right hemi-colectomy was done to remove between 10-12cm of Simran's large intestine.
"The patient was extremely fortunate that she managed to catch the tumour in its early stages and therefore was able to have it surgically removed without the need for further treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy," said Dr. Sidani.
This March, doctors at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi are promoting greater awareness of colorectal cancer during Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: The Cleveland Clinic of Abu Dhabi (CCAD) is all set to open a kidney and liver transplant centre in the capital which will have live and cadaver organ transplants by the beginning of 2018, said a senior representative of the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio on the sidelines of Arab Health 2017. Dr Mathew Walsh, chairman of surgery from Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, told Gulf News: “We have finalised the opening with the health authorities and will have 50 per cent live and 50 per cent cadaver transplants.” Dr Walsh added, “Our aim is to bring the multidisciplinary culture of Cleveland Clinic to UAE through global connect programmes and provide opportunities for medical innovation. Recently, we conducted the first-ever endoscopic achalasia, which is a minimally invasive surgery of the lower sphincter of the oesophagus. Similarly, we conducted other complicated endoscopic surgeries. Our aim is to bring multidisciplinary expertise in the field of colorectal surgeries, hepatology and cardiac surgeries, oncology and robotics to the UAE.” Continuing medical education stressed Dr Brian Dunkin, chief endoscopist from the Methodist Institute of Innovation and Education (MITIE) at Houston, highlighted the need to create an ethos of continuous medical training and updation for health-care professionals. Speaking to Gulf News on the sidelines of Arab Health 2017, he said: “While there is a sophisticated curriculum for medical school and residency, there is no system to make sure that doctors are continuously abreast of the rapid medical and technological changes. It is our endeavour at MITIE to address this issue.” Dr Dunking cited the example of creating such an atmosphere at the simulation and training centre at the King Fahd Medical City in Saudi Arabia. “We created a Fellowship of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) programme at the centre which greatly benefited surgeons of this region. We are looking to create similar programmes and training in UAE as well. While the industry can support such a learning process, there is also a need of all the stakeholders in the health-care sector to come together and facilitate such continuous learning.” © Gulf News via Edarabia.com
