College Review: Carnegie Mellon University by KATE CASTELLANA Staff Writer
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a global research university, through its American campus is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It enrolls over 13,200 students and puts a strong emphasis on invention and engineered production. CMU’s most famous departments are predictably its departments of robotics and computer science. However, that is not to say that CMU does not have more to offer. Their schools of engineering, fine arts, business, and science also excel at a world-renown level. Plus, CMU has many programs that easily allow for a dual major in two completely different subjects,  accepting of every student’s dream graduation who are willing to apply for the double workload.. With a teacher-student ratio of about 1:10, an individual focus for students’ success is expected of staff. CMU is certainly a unique place. Seeing as their mascot is a Scottish Terrier and the school colors that are actually a traditional Scottish plaid, it is not surprising that CMU is also the only school in the nation to give a graduating student a degree in bagpipe performance. Though an emphasis is hardly placed on athletics at CMU, there are still many small programs designed to make active students feel at ease. There are also over 250 different clubs on campus, increasing every year. Campus life is generally laid back, but has a diverse enough social scene even before taking the other 86,000 Pittsburgh college students into account. About 21% of students in total take part in CMU’s Greek life, filtering into 1 of the 23 active fraternities and sororities on campus. Housing is also something that CMU takes seriously. It is guaranteed for first-year students, and off-campus living is also supported by the university. There is a dining hall in almost every dorm building, and various dining partnerships around Pittsburgh looking to give the potentially starving college students a late-night discount. CMU is a college for a student body with certain tastes: a quieter campus life and dedications to academics. Though this might not be for everyone, a unique campus in a beautiful location is worth looking into.

1) I am excited by all the new opportunities around me! I am seeing John McCain and various other speakers debate how Congress should vote on the Iran bill, I’m seeing Jessica Williams do some stand up, I’m attending an event that discusses the importance of education surrounding the upcoming election... And if I didn’t have an 8:55, I could go to a Dick Cheney protest!! But alas, I am still surrounded by so many cool opportunities and I need to take advantage of them all. 2) I’m already feeling a little under the weather but I’m doing my best to take care of myself. I’m sleeping more, drinking lots of water and Vitamin C, taking vitamins, eating soup, taking medicine, anything to keep this sickness at bay! 3) It’s important not to judge people based on your first impressions of them. For example, if it’s the second day and you see perhaps the most beautiful boy in the entire world lean against your door frame, you may THINK that your heart has stopped and the world has stood still and that you must dedicate your entire being to him, but you DO NOT. That’s a waste of time. And you’ll get emotionally attatched over nothing. And then you find out that he’s a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN and that he also hooked up with fucking Mediterranean Lucia (who actually looks at lot like me, but way prettier) and then you get upset but just get over it and remember that there are four more years of college and plenty of boys. 4) Alcohol will give you confidence. And then you end up making out with two boys in two nights???? Whoops??? Lol and then you’re super super proud of yourself and they’re like give me your number! let’s hang! and I’m like lol no I’m the ruler of the world 5) You’ll meet really, really nice girls who take care of you when you get so drunk that one second you’re dancing and happy and talkative and then when you feel like you can finally let your guard down you start sobbing because you saw your ex-boyfriend the other day and not only does he go to the same college as you but he lives in your building and that’s really fucking unfair if you ask me but they’re nice and let you drunkenly cry and don’t judge you for it 6) I love college. I love friends. I love the quad. I love political activism. I don’t love homework. But I love clubbing and parties and going out to eat and taking the metro!!! and going to museums and seeing monuments and eating in the dining room and watching movies and talking and texting and laughing and inside jokes and I love college. “14 Days In and Here Are My Six Thoughts” by jfkcarolineswag
