Hawkish BoJ smashes USDJPY, Greenback collapses against CAD
Bank of Japan Governor Surprisingly Considers Rate Hikes
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda gave a parliamentary speech on the recent rate hike in Tokyo. Ueda insisted on maintaining rate hikes following increasing global market uncertainty.
The governor played down the impact of July’s rate hikes on the recent uncertainty in the Japanese economy and Nikkei 225. Instead, he highlighted concerns around the US economy as the primary catalyst, however he said he doesn’t expect further rate hikes soon.
Following the speech, USDJPY continued its steep bearish trend since July. The price looks set to break through the 145 pivot, 100 SMA (black line) and ascending trendline to test the 140 level soon.

USDJPY Weekly
EURJPY has also seen a steep drop since early July, however it’s showing signs of turning around. The price rose sharply from the 100 SMA (black line), 160 pivot and ascending trendline, and it looks likely that resistance will be found around 165.

Canadian Core Retail Sales Rise as USDCAD Crashes
Canadian Core Retail Sales were 0.3%, up from -1.2% last month and -0.2% forecasted. Core Retail Sales exclude very volatile industries which often distort the underlying trend. The positive news may hold the Bank of Canada back on consecutive rate cuts.
Meanwhile, bullish consumer spending will likely strengthen the Canadian Dollar and keep interest rates on hold. Overall, the increase in core retail sales was led by food and beverage retailers, which rose by 1.2%.
After the news, USDCAD broke out from the ascending flag, which had rapid momentum as it eased through the 1.36 pivot. The price will probably find support around the 1.35 pivot and 100 SMA (black line) soon.

Trade Insurance Market to Witness Excellent Revenue Growth Owing to Rapid Increase in Demand
Advance Market Analytics released a new market study on Global Trade Insurance Market Research report which presents a complete assessment of the Market and contains a future trend, current growth factors, attentive opinions, facts, and industry validated market data. The research study provides estimates for Global Trade Insurance Forecast till 2027*.
Global trade has changed significantly since the financial crisis and the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, which spread protectionism and nationalism amid global economic and political volatility. To fill the gap left by banks shrinking their balance sheets, commercial transactions have been increasingly supported by structured credit modalities carried out by factories, financing ‘Accounts Receivable’ in local and international currencies. The Covid-19 crisis is further transforming the trade credit market. The sector may reach USD 10 trillion in volume globally by 2030. Trade credit insurers are also impacted by the Covid-19 crisis. With an expectation of increasing loss trends in the short term, indemnity reserves may need to be established. The market appetite following Covid-19 may be a little different from what we saw in the past decade. Countries like France, Germany, and the Netherlands have introduced measures offering support to the trade credit insurance industry through guarantees backed by public funds, allowing insurers to maintain limits and capacity. In turn, insurers transfer part of the premium collected to the government. This is an interesting and creative tool that if adopted in other countries such as in Brazil could not only protect the credit insurance industry but perhaps most importantly, guarantee access to commercial credit which is vital for the economy.
Key Players included in the Research Coverage of Trade Insurance Market are HCC International (United Kingdom),Travelers (United States),Euler Hermes (France),Credimundi (Belgium),ACE (United Kingdom),Argo Surety (United Kingdom),Zurich (Switzerland),AIG (United States),Novae Group plc (United Kingdom),SACE BT (Italy),Atradius (United Kingdom),Aon (United Kingdom)
What's Trending in Market: Rapidly Growing International Trade Volumes
Political Events, Economic Downturns, and Natural Disasters Fuels the Need of Trade Insurance Coverage
Opportunities: COVID 19 pandemic is further increasing uncertainty and protectionism in global trade which is set to boost demand for trade credit insurance.

Canada’s housing market showed signs of life in February following a year of cooling off. We are watching the typically busy spring season to determine whether the correction has hit its bottom. The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) said Wednesday that while monthly home sales were down 40 percent from the same month a year earlier in February, they rose 2.3 percent from January. That was thanks to an uptick in activity in Greater Toronto and Vancouver, CREA said.
The average national sale price was $662,437 last month, down 18.9 percent from the all-time high in February 2022 — the month that most consider the peak of frenzied pandemic housing market in Canada. In the Greater Toronto and Vancouver markets, however, the average home price would be roughly $135,000 less, the agency said.
CREA said prices in some Ontario and B.C. markets have dipped below the national average, and cities including Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, and St. John’s stand out as markets where home prices are barely off their peaks. These also signify that the national trend in home prices is slowing.
CREA uses its Home Price Index (HPI) to show the aggregate composite price for homes in sales. It tends to downplay the influence of Canada’s most expensive or volatile markets on the national average.
The HPI shows aggregate home prices dropped 15.8 percent from a year ago and were down 1.1 percent month to month, marking about half the decrease from the previous period and the smallest such drop since last March 2023 sales figures for February showed that activity was close to the same levels as in 2018 and 2019, CREA said.
“February’s data contained the potential of a more robust market to come, but to repeat the bottom line from last month, won’t know what the 2023 market has in store until the spring,” CREA chair Jill Oudil said in a statement accompanying the data release. The number of newly listed homes was down 7.9 percent in February compared with a month earlier, CREA said. That meant coming to the market last month even as buying activity ticked.
CREA said the sales-to-new listings ratio rose to 58.4 percent, the tightest the market has been since last April. Whoever spoke to Global News recently saw an uptick in activity at the buyer level since the Bank of Canada announced a conditional pause on interest rate hikes.
The market dynamics playing out so far in 2023 are similar to those of 2019, noted Shaun Cathcart, CREA’s senior economist. If those trends continue in the months ahead, they could see sellers come off the sidelines and spur an uptick in activity this spring.
“Future sellers, many of whom will also be buyers, are likely biding their time until the optimum time to list and buy something else. For most, that’s in the spring,” he said in a statement buyers jump off the fence to snap homes up in 2023 once they finally start to hit the market. They did in 2019.”
Another factor pointing to a possible bottom for the housing correction is the recent instability in the U.S. banking system tied to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. He wrote in a note to clients on Wednesday that the increased attention on bonds amid the instability was driving down borrowing costs in Canada as long-term yields declined.
“While the broader turmoil is a clear negative for the overall economic outlook, the Canadian housing market dances to the tune of interest rates first and foremost,” he wrote.
“The pullback in long-term yields, along with the BoC’s rate pause, may at least put a floor under housing SVB uncertainty has led some in the market to revise their forecasts for the Bank of Canada’s rate path, with expectations rising for rate cuts in the months to come.
Economists who spoke to Global News this week said it’s premature to say whether the central bank will move from its rate pause as a result of the instability than anticipated activity elsewhere in the housing market in February might push the Bank of Canada to keep its benchmark rate higher for longer, wrote Randall Bartlett, senior director of Canadian economics, in a report Wednesday.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) revealed Wednesday that the annual pace of housing starts rose 13 percent in February, higher than market watchers had expected. It said it’s too soon to say if this volatile figure marks a turning point in the pace of construction. However, an eventual turnaround here could see the housing market pick up steam again.
If that comes to pass and the activity keeps Canada’s economy hotter than the central bank would like for its inflation, don’t expect rate cuts anytime soon, Bartlett argued for the Bank of Canada. This may mean keeping rates high for longer if the ‘accumulation of evidence’ suggests the economy is outperforming the expectations,” he wrote.
“Only time will tell if the recent financial market volatility has lasting implications for monetary policy in Canada.”

On September 21st 1832 the novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott died aged 61.
By the time he returned to Edinburgh in 1778 to prepare for school, his parent’s had moved from their apartment in the old town to a house in George Square, a new development of terrace houses occupied by better-off citizens escaping the narrow streets of the old town. He went to the prestigious Royal High School, one of the oldest schools in the world, and a powerful influence in the Scottish Enlightenment; that flourishing of learning and reason that had mirrored the French Enlightenment and made Scotland a centre of intellectual life in the 18th century. Classes were taught in Latin and Greek and during Scott’s time the school developed an international student-body with students from Russia, Germany, the USA and the British colonies.
At school Scott stood ‘head and shoulders above his literary contemporaries’, in the words of one historian and by the age of 12 he was attending the University of Edinburgh studying classics. At 15 he joined his father’s firm to become a solicitor. Adolescence had not yet been invented. During that time his literary interests continued to develop when he regularly attended a literary salon of a friend and met poets, including the great Robbie Burns. In 1789 he began studying law at the University of Edinburgh.
Since his days with Aunt Jenny in the countryside, Scott had been fascinated with the tales of local story-tellers and had even devised a means of recording them with knife-marks on a stick, since writing them down openly was not culturally acceptable. At 25 he began his literary career, with the publication in 1796 of the tales he had collected, called The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border.
The following year, after a whirlwind three-week courtship, he married Charlotte Genevieve Charpentier, the daughter of a Frenchman and ward of a member of the English nobility. He was appointed an officer of the Scottish courts and with that position, his wife’s income, his earnings as a solicitor and his writing he was comfortably well-off for some time. Charlotte and Walter had five children, one dying young and they remained happily married until Charlotte’s death in 1826. The couple began their married life in a large house he had built in the new parts of Edinburgh, moving a few years later to a larger outside the town of Selkirk, where his court was situated.
Scott used the new printing business of two friends, James and John Ballantyne, to self-publish his early poetry. By 1810 he had become well-known and had written such familiar works as The Lady of the Lake, and Marmion, containing the often-quoted lines, “Oh! what a tangled web we weave…..”.
The Ballantyne brothers moved the business to Edinburgh, and Scott went into partnership with them, a move that was to ultimately prove near fatal to his well-being.
At that time prose was considered inferior to poetry, so when Scott published his first novel, Waverley, in 1814 he did so anonymously. Over the next five years he published a series of similar novels, all with Scottish historical settings and all anonymous written by “the author of Waverley”. Despite their great success and huge sales for the time, only in 1827, after almost all his novels had been published, did Scott admit his authorship of them – while his books of poems were all published in his own name.
The later novels, especially Ivanhoe, were thinly-veiled historical allegories of political issues of the time, particularly the rise of Scottish nationalism and protest against English rule. Despite this, when Scott suggested to the future King George IV that he could find the Crown Jewels hidden away after the Union  he gained support for the venture and when he found them in the bowels of Edinburgh Castle the grateful King knighted him a baronet.
In 1825 there was a national banking crisis which led to the collapse of John Ballantyne & Co. and left Scott, the financial partner, with massive debts. Rather than declare bankruptcy or accept help from his admirers he wrote himself out of his debts with a flurry of publications written so quickly he left punctuation to the printers. He travelled to France and collected material for his nine-volume biography of Napoleon Bonaparte, but by 1831, with Charlotte dead and stressed by his financial ruin, his health began to fail.
Sir Walter Scott suffered a stroke and passed away on Sept. 21st 1832 at his home,  Abbotsford.  Although he had not yet paid back all his debts, his novels continued to sell and all debts were settled by his estate a short time later.  The house was opened to the public in 1833, it has remained a popular tourist attraction since then.  The last descendant of Scott lived there until 2004.
The Scott Monument, a 200 feet tall and the world’s largest monument to a writer, is in Princes Street Gardens, in Edinburgh. Scott is also commemorated on a stone slab in Makars' Court, outside The Writers' Museum in the Old Town.; quotes from his work are also visible on the Canongate Wall of the Scottish Parliament building in Holyrood another statue can be found in Parliament House which houses the Scottish High Courts
There is a tower dedicated to his memory on Corstorphine Hill, which I have featured in my posts a couple of times in the west of the city and Edinburgh's Waverley railway station, opened in 1854, takes its name from his first novel.
Elsewhere in Scotland the large column that dominates George Square in Glasgow is also a monument to the writer. Up in Perth there is a statue to the writer, in honour of his work, 'The Fair Maid of Perth', a novel published in 1828. There is a statue of Scott at Markethill Road, East Kilbride. another is  located outside the Clovenfords Hotel in Galashiels and one at  Market Place, Selkirk.
There is also is a  bronze portrait statue of Walter Scott and the writer's favourite dog Maida in Central Park in Manhattan, New York, another at  Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia and a memorial at  Victoria Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada. I could probably go on searching and find many others around the world, but I shall leave that for another post perhaps.
Scott’s Tomb is in the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, on the banks of the same River Tweed as his estate and an ancient and important church in Scottish history. He had selected this spot when he was much younger.

13)What is Sustainability?
Tumblr media
The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: environmental, economic and social. Explained in the English dictionary Sustainability is the “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain ecological balance.” Sustainability is the focus on meeting the demands of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainability influences businesses to take a more active approach in improving the environment. Increasingly, companies have issued goals such as commitment to zero-waste packaging by a certain year, or to reduce overall emissions by a certain percentage.
The environmental impact of the fashion industry
Although the fashion industry is striving toward a more sustainable future, the industry still has a disastrous impact on the environment. It is considered to be the second biggest polluter of the world, just after the oil industry; and the impact is only increasing environmental damages as the industry continues to grow.
Water pollution
In a lot of the countries that garments are typically produced; untreated toxic waste waters from these textile factories are dumped directly into the rivers.
Waste water contains toxic substances, such as lead, mercury and arsenic among many others. These have an extremely harmful impact on the aquatic life and the health of those living near these rivers. The contamination eventually reaches the sea and eventually spreads around the globe.
Another major source of water contamination is the extended use of fertilisers for cotton production, which heavily pollutes run off and evaporation waters.
To prevent this we should choose clothes made in countries that have stricter environmental regulations for factories ie Canada, the EU and Us.
We should also choose more organic and natural fibres that do not require chemicals to be produced.
Water Consumption
The fashion industry is a major water consumer.
Large quantities of fresh water are used for the dyeing and finishing process for all of our clothes. To put this into perspective; It can take up to 200 tonnes of fresh water per tonne of dyed fabric.
Cotton also needs large amounts of water to grow; Up to 20,000 litres of water are needed to produce 1kg of cotton. This causes many issues, one being that it generates tremendous pressure on this already scarce source and secondly, it has dramatic ecological consequences such as the decertification of the Aral Sea; where cotton production has completely drained out the water.
Tumblr media

We should be more conscious and choose fibres with low water consumption such as linen and recycled fibres etc.
Microfibres in the Ocean
When synthetic garments like polyester, nylon etc are washed, about 1,900 individual microfibres are released into the water; which then make its way into the oceans.
Scientists have since discovered that small aquatic organisms ingest these microfibres; These are then eaten by small fish which are then eaten by bigger fish, introducing plastic into our food chain.
To help eliminate this, we should use natural or semi-synthetic fibres.
Waste accumulation
Clothing has become disposable and as a result of this we are seeing- or not seeing- more textile waste being generated.
The average western household throws away around 30kg of clothing each year. Only 15% is recycled or donated, while the rest go directly to landfill or are incinerated.
Synthetic fibres like polyester are plastic fibres and therefore, non-biodegradable and can take up to 200 years to decompose. Synthetic fibres are used in 72% of our clothing.
We can choose natural or semi-synthetic fibres and buy less, buy better quality, mend and recycle clothes to help reduce this.
Chemicals
Chemicals are a major component in our clothes. They are used during fibre production, dyeing, bleaching and the wet processing of each garment.
This heavy use of cotton farming, causes diseases and premature death among cotton farmers. Along with that, massive amounts of fresh water and ocean water pollution and soil degradation are created.
These substances are also harmful to us, the consumer.
In order for us to reduce this we should choose organic fibres, sustainable and ethical brands and always wash new clothes before use. We should also look and wear garments with certification labels- such as; OEKO-TEX, GOTS or BLUESIGN.
Greenhouse gas emissions
The fashion industry is accountable for 10% of global carbon emissions.
The industry is generating a lot of greenhouse gases due to the amount of energy that is used during its production and manufacturing process as well as the transportation of garments each year.
Synthetic fibres(Polyester, acrylic, nylon etc.) which are used in the majority of our clothes, are made from fossil fuel; making this a more energy-intensive   process than with natural fibres. Most of our clothing is produced in countries that are essentially powered by coal like China, Bangladesh and India to name few. This is the most impure and dirtiest type of energy in terms of carbon emission.
James Conca, Forbes reflects that “Cheap synthetic fibres also emit gases like N2O which is 300 times more damaging than CO2.”
Being aware of this, we should aim to buy clothes in countries powered by renewable energy and or choose natural fibres and buy better quality or mend clothing.
Soil Degradation
Soil, is the fundamental element of our ecosystem. Healthy soil is needed for food production but also to absorb CO2.
The global degradation of soil is one of the main environmental issues our planet is facing- contributing to global warming and threatening global food security.
The fashion industry plays a major part in the degradation of soil in many ways: overgrazing of pastures through cashmere goats and sheep raised for their wool; massive use of chemicals to grow cotton and the use of wood based fibres like rayon that is causing deforestation. It is because of this that we should be conscious of more soil friendly fibres.
Rainforest Destruction
Every year, thousands of hectares of endangered and ancient rainforests are cut down and replaced by plantation of trees used to make wood-based fabrics such as rayon, viscose and modal.
The loss of forests are a direct threat to the ecosystem and indigenous communities. Over the past decade Indonesia has suffered large- scale deforestation of its rainforests.
Tumblr media
Image found and taken from: https://www.thinkinghumanity.com/2018/05/revealing-video-by-greenpeace-international-raises-awareness-of-massive-deforestation-in-indonesia.html
Opt for lyocell/tencel instead of rayon, modal or viscose materials.
When we’re talking about the negative impacts that the fashion industry has on the environment, we should also take into account the un-ethical practices of those that are in the fast fashion garment making industry,
Tumblr media
Majority of our clothes are made in countries in which workers rights are limited or non-existent. Production companies regularly move locations in search for even cheaper labour costs. Many of our beloved fashion brands assure its customers that the people making their clothes are paid at least the minimum legal wage. However in most countries like China, Bangladesh and India the minimum wage is said to be a lot less- between half to a fifth of the living wage. We can even see this type of thing with fast fashion retailers like ‘Boohoo’ who had been reported to only be paying their workers at their Leicester factory a meagre £3.50 an hour, when the minimum legal wage in the UK for those aged 25 and above stands at £8.72.Despite these claims BooHoo still managed to accumulate a surge in sales. It is also worth mentioning that Boohoo’s sister company ‘Pretty Little Thing’ received backlash after their Black Friday sale which reduced its products down to 99%. It was also discovered that during this current climate, the staff at the Leicester factory were not wearing protective face masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus and so it comes as no surprise to find out the fashion workers are exploited and forced to work in health compromising working conditions in poorer climates. Garment workers are forced often forced to work 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week in order to meet the brands deadlines. Because these workers have such a low income, a lot of them are unable to refuse overtime and in some cases, overtime is not even paid at all.
The collapse of the Rana Plaza, in 2013, killing 1134 garment workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh has given us a peek into the unacceptable labour conditions of these garment making factories within the fashion industry.
Tumblr media
Image found and take from: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/19/rana-plaza-uk-pressure-compensation-fund-victims
Workers are often left without ventilation; breathing in toxic substances. Accidents, fires, injuries and disease are very prevalent occurrences within these unethical textile production sites.
It is estimated that 168 billion children in the world are forced to work. Because the fashion industry requires low-skilled labour, children are often recruited and this is very prominent in the industry. In South India, 250,000 girls work under the sumangali scheme, in which girls are sent to work for 3-5 years in a textile factory in exchange for a basic wage and a lump sum at the end of their dowry. These children are often left overworked and are forced to live in appalling conditions.

Sustainable Fashion
Tumblr media
Image found and taken from: https://fashionmagazine.com/style/high-fashion-sustainable-clothing-photoshoot/
The meaning of sustainable fashion is having the intention to reduce environmental impact and improve social conditions within the industry.
The Green Strategy has set out clear goals to improve all stages of a product lifestyle focusing on harmful environmental effects and working conditions.
The Environmental Goals are aimed to protect natural resources; water, energy, land, soil, animals, plants, biodiversity, ecosystems; select renewable energy sources; wind, wave, solar, repair, remake, reuse, care and recycle products; Improve working conditions in the field, factories, transportation chain, and stores and to follow good ethics, best practice and international codes of conduct to ensure that these goals are maintained.
Green Strategy’s Anna Brismar has since identified seven main forms of more sustainable fashion production and consumption, as seen below.

Circular Fashion as explained by A. Brismar 2017 is “defined as clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulated responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable farmland hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use.”
The concept of circular fashion is based on the main principles of the circular economy and sustainable development. It’s concerned with the entire life cycle of a product, from design and sourcing all the way to production.
Essentially, fashion products should be designed with longevity, resource efficiency, non-toxicity, biodegradability, recyclability and good ethics in mind.
Moreover, products should be used for as long as possible, through good care, repair, refurbishment and sharing among multiple users over time. Things like shopping second hand/vintage, rent clothing, use resale sites, like Vinted, eBay, Depop and others alike can help with this as well as investing in circular fashion brands like MaisonCléo, AVAVAV and Rave Review who all use dead stock and left over materials for their creations; extending the life of unwanted or over-produced fabrics that would most likely end up landfill; materials should be recycled and reused for the manufacturing of new products. If unfit for recycling, these materials should instead be composted to become nutrients for plants and other living organisms in the ecosystem.
‘Clevercare’ owned by designer Stella McCartney has created a list of tips to help ensure the longevity of your clothing and to also become more environmentally friendly. She suggests to; not wash your clothes as often and spot clean; Wash clothes at a lower temperature to save energy and extend the life of your clothing; Hang clothes out to dry instead of relying on a tumble dryer and avoid using energy; Iron only when necessary; Consider using eco friendly dry cleaners and if you tire of an old item of clothing, recycle it and ultimately, the less you wash your clothes the better.
Fashion is seeing the start of products being pulled into the market based on actual demand rather than being pushed towards us based on guesses and forecasts.
Fashion on demand is a factor that a lot of designers are adopting to make their practices more ethical and environmentally aware as spoken by A.Brismar 2017 “We are likely to see a rise in the demand for more personalised items of higher quality that are produced ‘on-demand’ (such as tailor-made, custom-made and bespoke items.” Through this concept, we will hopefully see the result of a rise in just-in-time production, reduced levels of overstock, and an increase in the importance of small-batch production cycles.

Designer Megan Crosby tailors to each customer, producing made to order pieces using old stock or sustainable fabrics, bold, bright fabric. Megan herself says that she uses “remnant, sustainable and deadstock fabrics as well as environmentally friendly dyes on every garment, to make sure I’m not harming the planet... Each item is made to order, so as well as giving you the perfect fit, I’m also not wasting fabric.” Statement taken and found: https://bymegancrosby.com/pages/about
Circular fashion is a concept that encourages to keep clothing and materials in use through recycling, repurposing and rewearing, avoiding the idea of making completely new products, thus, reducing the amount of ecologically harmful waste. This idea helps us to introduce the reduction of the amount of resources we are using up, as well as the amount of materials and products that end up in landfill.

Compassionate Fashion: The protection of nature and people
Compassionate fashion (Slow fashion) has been developed as a contrast to the fast fashion industry. The aims are to create clothing within the lens of environmental, ethical, and sustainable ideals. As a result of this, slow fashion finds itself recycling material, reusing excess textiles, up-cycling vintage clothes and advocating for the prolonged lifetime of a garments. While these ideals have always been at the core of the ethical fashion movement, more of the fashion industry is opening up to become more ethically and environmentally conscious.
Designer Stella McCartney and her company believe that “Everybody in our supply chain should be treated with respect and dignity. We believe everybody should earn a fair wage. We believe in building modern and resilient supply chains that provide desirable jobs, foster people’s skills, strengthen worker’s voices and advocate for vulnerable groups.” Stella McCartney 2020
McCartney prides herself on using sustainable or sustainably sourced materials: re-engineered cashmere,100% sustainable viscose, fur free fur, organic cotton, recycled nylon & polyester, vegetarian leather, wool sourced from animal welfare farms etc.

Other brands and designers are taking this approach with E.L.V. Denim taking discarded and unwanted denim; reusing and reworking them into modern and sophisticated designs and Richard Malone who uses natural dyes and little water waste as well as “keeping these women away from harmful chemicals that mega brands consistently overlook in their search for profit over progress.” he states. He has since developed techniques which turned recycled plastic and viscose into yarn and fringing, as well as working with weavers on recycling ocean waste.
How are High Street stores responding to sustainability issues?
Although we are aware that the majority of high street fashion brands are not using ethical and environmentally conscious practices-we are slowly starting to see certain brands and retailers stepping up and heading towards a more sustainable future.
H&M are amongst a few brands that have taken a step towards sustainable fashion. They state that “This is an ongoing process, with a clear aim of continuous improvement...Our vision is for all our operations to be run in a way that is sustainable; economically, socially and environmentally...It will also allow us to improve the livelihood for people and strengthen the communities where we operate. We are involved in various projects and initiatives related to both environmental and social issues.”
H&M have introduced a garment collection service ‘I:collect’ and created a collection attributed to their sustainable practices called ‘The Conscious Collection; where it is said that all items are made from recycled materials. In 2017 their promotion video called ‘H&M Conscious: Bring it on’ suggests that this revoke allows them to revamp these items of clothing, donating them to other people or recycling the materials and making them into new items of clothing or useful items like cloths and cardboard, to name a few- “Instead of throwing old or unwanted garments away, you can bring these to the H&M Store. We will then give them a new life...we work to prevent textiles ending up in landfills...In early 2014, we took the first big steps in this mission and made the first products with at least 20% recycled material from collected garments.”

Zara is another major high street fashion label that has been making an effort to boost its sustainability image with the launch of their ‘JOIN LIFE’ movement; which includes sustainability commitments, ethical goals and products that are made from the most sustainable raw materials – organic cotton, Tencel, Lyocell and recycled polyester, which will account for 20% of Zara’s collections by the end of the of 2015. They claim that by 2025 Zara clothes will be made from 100% sustainable materials- with the owner stating that Massimo Dutti and Pull&Bear will shortly follow suit.
An article from GraziaDaily.co.uk documented that Zara has made plans for 2,232 stores to meet the company’s eco-efficient standard and by 2020, “Zara’s factories will aim to produce zero discharge of hazardous chemicals for all products at every stage of the supply chain, while all collections will use sustainable cotton, linen and recycled polyester by 2025.The company is also committed to producing zero landfill waste from its logistic centres and headquarters by 2023 and those same Zara facilities are driving towards using 80 per cent clean energy before 2025.” To top this off Zara has already eliminated single-use plastic bags, with its bags now being 100% recycled as are its cardboard online boxes. Ultimately,It is through this that we can appreciate H&M’s and Zara’s step towards making their brand more sustainable and ethically conscious. With this we can only hope that more fast fashion brands alike will feel more inclined to adopt this and carry this out into their own brands/labels.

Headlines
NYC reopening (AP) New York City hits a key point Monday in trying to rebound from the nation’s deadliest coronavirus outbreak. For the first time in three months, New Yorkers will be able to dine out, though only at outdoor tables. Shoppers can once again browse in the city’s destination stores. Shaggy heads can get haircuts. Cooped-up kids can finally climb playground monkey bars instead of apartment walls. Office workers can return to their desks, though many won’t yet. The virus has been blamed for over 22,000 New York City deaths. The death toll has been in single digits in recent days. Infections are down, but between 200 and 400 people have still been testing positive for the virus each day over the past two weeks, according to city data.
Another shooting in Seattle protest zone leaves 1 wounded (AP) One person was wounded in what was the second shooting in Seattle’s protest zone in less than 48 hours, police said. The shooting happened late Sunday night in the area near Seattle’s downtown that is known as CHOP, for “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest,” police tweeted, adding that one person was at a hospital with a gunshot wound. The Sunday shooting followed a pre-dawn shooting on Saturday in a park within the zone that left a 19-year-old man dead and a 33-year-old man critically injured. The CHOP zone is a several-block area cordoned off by protesters near a police station in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.
With no flights, Argentine sails across Atlantic to see parents (AFP) “Mission accomplished!” That joyful declaration came from Juan Manuel Ballestero, an Argentine sailor who, unable to fly home from Portugal due to the pandemic, crossed the ocean alone in his modest sailboat to see his aging parents. The 47-year-old completed an exhausting 85-day odyssey in his small boat, the nine-meter (30-foot) “Skua.” After testing negative for COVID-19 on arrival, Ballestero was cleared to set foot on dry land to see his mother 82-year-old Nilda and father Carlos, aged 90. “I’ve achieved what I’ve been fighting for these last three months,” he told AFP. “It came down to this: to be with the family. That’s why I came.” Ballestero, who works in Spain, hatched his ambitious plan for a single-handed sea passage after flights back to Argentina were canceled because of the pandemic.
Surprise medical bills (NYT) Last week, my colleague Sarah Kliff noticed something strange. A medical lab in Dallas had charged as much as $2,315 apiece for coronavirus tests, even though a test typically costs $100. Sarah called the lab to ask about the price—and the lab quickly dropped it to $300. In her years of covering health care for Vox and now The Times, Sarah has frequently reported on the arbitrary nature of medical costs, often highlighting extreme examples. After these examples receive public attention, health care providers sometimes reduce the price. Of course, most medical bills don’t become the subject of journalistic investigations. Which means that medical labs, drug companies, hospitals and doctors’ offices are often able to charge high prices to insurance companies and patients, without consequence. “If you look at pretty much any other developed country—Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Singapore, the list goes on—the government does some version of rate setting,” Sarah told us. “The United States doesn’t.” That’s one reason that the cost of health care in the U.S. is higher than in any other country.
Turkey’s lonely tourist attractions face make-or-break week (Reuters) Turkey’s Mediterranean coasts and historic attractions face a critical week as the government presses to open borders and salvage at least part of a tourist season already battered by the coronavirus pandemic. With beaches largely empty and many hotels deciding whether to open, Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy told Reuters he hoped the world’s sixth-largest destination could attract up to half of last year’s 45 million arrivals. But much depends on talks to begin flights from Russia, Germany and Britain—also hard hit by the virus—which should reach some conclusions by early next week, he said. The stakes are high for Turkey, where a rebound this month in COVID-19 cases has raised concerns in a country where tourism accounts for up to 12% of the economy. Foreign arrivals fell by two thirds in the first five months of the year.
Virus cases surge in India, US, but slow in China, Korea (AP) The world saw the largest daily increases yet in coronavirus cases, with infections soaring in India’s rural villages after migrant workers fled major cities. India’s coronavirus caseload climbed by nearly 15,000 as of Monday to 425,282, with more than 13,000 deaths, the health ministry reported. Nearly 90% of India’s poorest districts have cases, though the outbreak remains centered in Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu states, which are home to major cities. Infections slowed in China and South Korea, suggesting some progress in stemming their newest outbreaks. But despite clear headway in containing the virus in regions that suffered early outbreaks, globally the number of new virus cases has soared in recent days. In Brazil, Iraq, India and the United States, hospitals are scrambling to cope.
China Knocks Out Tyson Imports Following Coronavirus Outbreak (Foreign Policy) China has temporarily suspended the import of poultry products from an Arkansas-based Tyson Foods processing plant after reports of a mass coronavirus outbreak at the company’s processing facilities. Tyson is the second largest chicken processor in the world with chicken sales of $13.1 billion (out of total sales of $42.4 billion) in 2019. The World Health Organization says there is no evidence that a person can contract the coronavirus from food or food packaging, but Chinese authorities—chastened by a recent outbreak at a Beijing food market—seem to be taking a hard line. China-based experts have floated the possibility that any more problems with U.S. food exporters could lead to a dissolution of the trade deal on natural disaster grounds—and an end to $36.5 billion in agricultural products that China must buy from the United States as part of the agreement.
Australia Fears Second Wave as State Tightens Virus Controls (Bloomberg) Australia’s second-most populous state has tightened coronavirus controls as a spike in cases triggers fears the nation could be hit by a second wave of infections. Victoria extended a state of emergency by four weeks to July 20, halved the number of visitors allowed in homes to 5 and delayed a planned increase in the size of gatherings in cafes, restaurants and pubs. The weekend announcement, and a jump in cases in countries including the U.S., Israel and South Korea, heightened market concerns about the difficulty of reviving economic growth while controlling the spread of Covid-19.
As Lebanon sinks into crisis, fear of crime grows (Reuters) A financial crisis that has swept Lebanon since last year means more and more families have little means to cope as the currency collapses and the state offers little or no help. The country faces what is seen as the biggest threat to its stability since the 1975-1990 civil war. In the first four months of 2020, murders in Lebanon doubled from the same period last year. Car thefts jumped nearly 50% and burglaries 20%, according to a report by the Beirut-based research firm Information International, based on police data. As the currency plunges, more unrest is feared in a country with a tumultuous history and where sectarian tensions are never far from the surface. As the currency plunges, more unrest is feared in a country with a tumultuous history and where sectarian tensions are never far from the surface. A World Food Programme report this month found that 50% of Lebanese, as well as 63% of Palestinians and 75% of Syrians in the country, had feared they would not have enough to eat over the past month. A security official linked spiralling prices to what he described as friction in the streets. “We’re still at the start, it’s only going to get bigger,” he said.
Dubai set to reopen for tourism, allow residents to travel (Washington Post) Dubai authorities announced late Sunday that the city would once again be allowing in tourists—with a negative coronavirus test result—starting July 7. Residents will also be allowed to travel again starting Monday. The new travel rules for Dubai, a wealthy Persian Gulf emirate known for its soaring skyscrapers, luxury hotels and beaches, reflects the importance of tourism to the economy. Unlike United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi, Dubai does not have oil and its economy relies significantly on international travel and tourism. In 2019, more than 16 million tourists visited Dubai. The hotels, restaurants and other facilities catering to visitors have been desolate since a ban in late March on all arrivals except citizens. Even residency-visa holders—some 90 percent of the population—were not permitted to return to the country until just recently.

#1yrago Touring, complete: what gear survived four months of hard-wearing book-tour?
Tumblr media
I had the last official stop of my book tour for my novel Walkaway on Saturday, when I gave a talk and signing at Defcon in Las Vegas. It was the conclusion of four months of near-continuous touring, starting with three weeks of pre-release events; then six weeks of one-city-per-day travel through the US, Canada and the UK, then two months of weekly or twice-weekly events at book fairs, festivals and conferences around the USA.
Now I'm touring complete. There's one more event on Aug 10 -- a kind of victory lap presentation at my local library here in Burbank -- and then a trickle of events over the next six months, but that's more like my normal baseline of public appearances, a very different experience to the kind of thing I did from April until last weekend.
It's been nine years since my first book tour -- the Little Brother tour -- and as always, there were new facts on the ground to adapt to, as well as hard-won wisdom that saw me through.
Here's some new stuff: indie bookstores are doing better than they have in years, and they're expanding into lots of live events, which are better-planned and better organized than ever. In many cities, there is one thriving indie and three or four suburban Barnes & Nobles, and these have changed, too: seeing as they are the only game in town, these B&Ns attract some stellar booksellers who intimately understand marketing and also really, really care about books. Also: all the indie bookstores have devoted substantial floorspace to embroidered socks. I'm calling it: we are at peak funny-sock.
Here's some stuff that's still the same: "Never pass up a chance to take water or make water." That is hard-won, important touring advice, passed from serious traveler to serious traveler as gospel. Airports are worse than they've ever been...and it's easier to buy your way out of the hardship, between TSA Precheck and Clear, which require that you give up a ton of personal information (which I'd already given up when I applied for my Green Card, so I went ahead, and it was so, so worth it -- so much so that I presume that anyone who has the wherewithal will buy their way into these programs and cease to do anything to mitigate the traveling woes of the general public -- watch for travel to get waaaay worse for normals who only fly a couple times per year).
I've been changing out my travel gear for years, trying to find the optimal combination of flexibility and comfort. I check a bag, and my suitcase was not lost once on this tour (it's happened before, though, and had to catch up with me a city or two down the road). The suitcase was severely damaged, and more than once (more on that below).
Here's the gear that survived this trip, stuff that will stay with me on upcoming trips.
Coffee
Tumblr media
This goes first. Life it too short for shitty coffee.
I use an Aeropress (but you knew that). I've stopped carrying around a hand-grinder. I have only so many duty-cycles left in my wrist tendons and then I will cease to be a writer. I'm not wasting them on a hand-grinder. Now I grind my coffee before I leave and put the coffee in a Ziploc Easy Open Tab quart-sized freezer bag (I keep a stash of these in my suitcase and resupply at coffee shops when I run out, having them grind for me; this means I can't buy Blue Bottle coffee since they, alone among coffee shops, will not grind their retail beans, boo) (I also bring along a handful of gallon-sized bags for various purposes). I've tried a lot of sealing bags, and Ziploc's easy opens are the only ones I can reliably seal well.
I heat water in the remarkably great Useful UH-TP147 Electric Collapsible Travel Kettle, a silicone collapsing kettle that has a thermostat that keeps water at near-boil so long as it's plugged in and on. It's multi-voltage and worked great in the UK, and it collapses down really small. The only downside: it looks weird enough on an X-ray that it is a very reliable predictor of having your bags searched by the TSA after you check them.
I am utterly dependent on the Orikaso folding cup to use with my Aeropress on the road. The majority of hotels supply paper cups, or glasses that are too narrow for the Aeropress. Carrying a rigid cup that decomposes into a thin sheet of plastic the size of a sheet of printer-paper spares me the awkwardness of holding the body of the Aeropress with one hand while pushing down on the plunger with the other to keep from squashing the paper cup.
For emergencies, I carried a stash of GO CUBES Energy Chews, a "neutraceutical" whose manufacturer makes a lot of extravagant claims for them. I think those claims are silly, but these are basically gummy-chews made from cold brew coffee (and stuff) and they work very fast and well, but did give me jitters (which were preferable to caffeine withdrawal).
Toiletries
Tumblr media
I carried my favorite shampoo, conditioner, soap and a supply of generic woolite in a set of four Innerneed silicone tubes (which I kept in a ziploc). I've used a  lot of different silicone tubes and these are my current favorites -- they have a locking mechanism that keeps the hard plastic lid more firmly in place on the silicone body of the tube, even when it's lubricated with slippery soaps, preventing the kinds of catastrophic breaches you get when the whole lid assembly just pops off the tube and everything comes pouring out.
I swapped out my old generic pharmacy rotary electric toothbrush for the Violife Slim Sonic Toothbrush, which is a AAA-battery-powered equivalent to one of those unwieldy, induction-charged Braun ultrasonic toothbrushes that my dentist wants me to use. It performs just as well as the Braun on my sink at home.
I suffer from really terrible, untreatable chronic pain and can't sleep or sit for any length of time without serious pain. I am absolutely reliant on my hot water bottle, with a knit sleeve. For my money, these are the best comfort items you can travel with -- I get them filled with boiling water by the flight attendants before take off and refill them hourly. At bedtime, I fill them from my collapsible kettle. The only downside: it's really easy to leave these behind in the bedclothes when you depart at 4AM.
I carried all my toiletries in Eagle Creek's Pack-It Wallaby Toiletry Organizer. It came highly recommended and after hard use, I see why: it has the best zippers I've ever had on a toilet bag, stores an incredible amount of stuff and still rolls up tight, and did a great job of containing one tube-of-goo breach that could have wrecked everything else.
Clothes
Tumblr media
Before the tour, I did a bunch of reading on the best travel underwear and decided to try Uniqlo's Airism Low Rise Boxer Briefs -- they were so comfortable and so easy to wash out in the sink (and so quick drying!) that I threw away all my other underwear when I got home and ordered a half-dozen more pairs. I traveled with three pairs of these, which crumpled small enough that I could fit them all in a pants pocket (should I have a need to do so?) and I rinsed the day's underwear in the sink every night and hung them to dry, chucking them in the bag in the morning, dry and clean.
Tumblr media
You might already know that I love the look of Volante's jackets and coats, so it won't surprise you to learn that I lived in an Augment hoodie for the first half of the tour (when the weather was cool), switching to a lighter-weight Peregrine for the second half, when things warmed up.
Tumblr media
I started the tour with three different pairs of pants in my suitcase, but left two behind on a resupply stop at home, because I was only ever wearing my Betabrand Off-the-Grid pants, which have enough stretchiness in them to do some basic yoga in, have huge pockets that somehow don't bulge much even when overfilled, and a neat little discreet mid-thigh side pocket good for keeping boarding passes in. My complaint: these were not colorfast at all: they were basically gray by the time I got home, even though I only ever hand-washed them in hotel sinks with generic woolite.
I always travel with pajamas: when you're on long flights, you can change into them for comfort; they give you a way to interact with hotel staff from your room early in the morning or late at night without having to get dressed or put a towel around your waist. I've been buying deadstock vintage men's pajamas from Etsy all year, because they look awesome and are more comfortable than anything you'll get in stores today.
I've been using REI's Sea to Summit compression sacks as laundry bags for ages: there's no problem with wrinkling your dirty laundry, right? Compression sacks are sorcerous reminders of just how much space there is between molecules.
Tumblr media
I lived in Native Jeffersons: basically a kid's croc shoe, but molded to look like a low-rise Converse All-Star. Super comfortable, and I could rinse them in the hotel sink every night and leave them upside-down against the wall and slip into them in the morning.
Comfort items
I traveled with a Stanley Adventure Flask that I filled with Jefferson's Reserve Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finished, 15-year-old bourbon that's finished with a couple years of rest in old cabernet casks. Yum.
Tumblr media
I always keep a couple dozen catering-sized sachets of Tabasco in my suitcase and handful in my carry-on. They don't seem to show up as liquids on TSA X-rays so you can keep them in your bag, and I've never had one burst in a bag. They make everything super-delicious (or at least bearable) and they are way more space-efficient than those cute, tiny, single-use Tabasco bottles.
Swimming
Swimming is the only way I can stay sane on tour. It keeps my chronic pain under control and burns some of the empty airplane-peanut and minibar calories.
Tumblr media
I swim with an underwater MP3 player. After trying a lot of models, I settled on the Exeze players, which are only available for sale in the UK. However, I've since discovered that virtually the same players are sold under other brand names in the USA: one model I've tried and liked is the Aerb.
The reason I swim with an MP3 player is so that I can listen to audiobooks. I get through a couple novels per month this way. Audible's proprietary DRM format isn't compatible with MP3 players, so forget about getting your swimming audiobooks that way. Instead, try Downpour and Libro.fm, both of whom sell thousands of DRM-free audiobooks. Audiobooks and swimming are a magic combination. I couldn't make it through the tour without them.
Gadgets
Tumblr media
I got my Calyx hotspot just over a year ago. It offers anonymous, unfiltered, unshaped, unlimited 4G/LTE wifi through Sprint's network, and supports the nonprofit good works of Calyx, who provide anonymity and privacy services to whistleblowers, journalists and many others. They are the good guys and this is a great product at a stellar price: $100 for the hotspot and $400/year for unlimited mobile broadband.
I continue to use X-series Thinkpads. I'm currently on the X270 and it runs Ubuntu very well. I didn't need any service on this tour, but I have on other tours, and I'm serene in the knowledge that the extended on-site next-day hardware replacement warranty (about $75/year!) guarantees that no matter what, I won't be without my computer for more than a day. My X270 took a lot of hard knocks on this tour and survived unscathed. My sole complaint: they screwed up the keyboards with the X230 (or so) and still haven't made a new chiclet keyboard that's half as good as the original Thinkpad keyboard. Please, Lenovo, bring my beloved keyboard back!
I use a Google Pixel phone and it's...not terrible. Everything about it works fine, but it has unbelievably shitty battery life. That is a killer on tour. The Alclap case solved that problem...for two weeks, and then it stopped working. I ordered two more, both of which were duds out of the box. The Scosche Magic Mount was more awkward to use, but also longer-lasting (it died last weekend, thanks to fraying in the wire that connected it to the phone).
Luggage
Tumblr media
You know all those suitcases that come with ten-year warranties? They're all designed to have a ten-year duty-cycle...assuming that you travel once or twice a year. In decades of hard travel, I've yet to buy a suitcase that can live up to the punishment of daily flying.
So now I buy suitcases based on how easy they are to get warranty service on. I had heard great things about Rimowa, and I loved the look of their cases, so I bit the bullet and sprang for one (they're extremely pricey). I quickly discovered that their much-vaunted service was terrible -- in London, anyway. My options were mailing the case to Germany, or taking it to a service center on Euston Road where they were rude, deceptive, and all-around awful. I was ready to swap the case for another manufacturer when I moved from London to LA two years ago.
But in LA, the whole story is different. Rimowa's service here is handled by a place out in Beverley Hills called Coco's Leather and they're pretty good at fixing stuff (there's sometimes a week turnaround, but I've found that if I call them after messengering the busted case out to them, they can often turn it around in a day).
I needed it. My Rimowa case was seriously damaged three times on tour: twice it had wheels ripped off (the whole wheel assembly, including the riveted-on bracket, torn right out of the aluminum!) by Southwest's baggage handlers in San Diego. Another time, AA baggage handlers destroyed the latches.
I'm sticking with Riwoma for now. Every luggage expert I've spoken to says that there's just not anything that will survive the kind of punishment I put my bags through, so I'm buying based on warranties, and between Coco's Leather and Rimowa's long-lasting warranties, I can live with this situation.
Tumblr media
I've gone through a lot of luggage tags over the years and have yet to have one last more than a few flights before it's torn off in the hold, caught in some grinding system. Now I use the TUFFTAAG Travel ID Bag Tag, made of hard-wearing aluminum with braided steel cables. Dozens of flights later, the tags are bent and battered, but still intact and still attached to my case -- that's a first.

TUPC files affidavits about other tenants, and issues with the bailiff but doesn't address lease termination
Tumblr media
The United People of Canada (TUPC) have filed four more affidavits from supporters alleging aggressive behaviour by a neighbour of St. Brigid's, problems with "street people" and issues with the bailiff hired to help evict the controversial group.
None of the documents submitted on Friday, the deadline ordered by Superior Court Justice Sally Gomery, appear to address the central question the judge outlined at TUPC's last court appearance: whether or not the controversial group's lease has been terminated.
William Komer, a director with TUPC, said the organization would not be "commenting on its legal strategy" ahead of its hearing scheduled for Sept. 19.
"The reason that these affidavits were filed will become apparent in due course," he wrote in an email to CBC on Monday.
"The reason that these affidavits were filed will become apparent in due course," he wrote in an email to CBC on Monday. The deal that would have visible TUPC buy the former church building near downtown Ottawa collapsed because the group failed to make $100,000 in deposits, according to court documents filed earlier by the landlord.
That violated the agreement of purchase and sale for the property and, coupled with the $10,000 the group owes in rent and its failure to provide proof of $5 million in liability insurance, entitles the landlord to terminate TUPC's lease, the document reads.
Representatives of TUPC claim the group has paid its rent. They are refusing to leave the property. None of the allegations have been tested in court.
A sale agreement included in court filings from the landlords — signed electronically by the owners and Komer — shows the property was to be sold for $5.95 million.
The landlord's affidavit alleges TUPC twice asked for deposit dates to be pushed back until the second, third and fourth payments — totalling $100,000 — were all due Aug. 10.
Komer claims in court documents filed ahead of the first appearance on Sept. 2 that TUPC had gathered $10,000 — enough for a second instalment — shortly before 4 p.m. on the day all four were supposed to be due but says the group's fundraising efforts were "frustrated" because the landlords hadn't provided them with leases.
Court filings also alleged problems with the condition of the building. He states TUPC asked for a delay until Sept. 1 to raise the other $90,000.
Komer did not get a response, according to the court documents. The next day, the landlord's real estate agent emailed him saying TUPC had defaulted on the purchase and sale agreement and it was dead.
While the property owner's court filings span more than 180 pages and contain several exhibits, including the sale agreement and emails from the real estate agent to Komer, TUPC's director's filings don't.
Asked why a copy of the bank drafts for rent payments, proof of insurance or the $100,000 in deposits the group said it's prepared to make weren't included, Komer said his affidavit stands as "proof."
"I will have supporting documentation available should I be questioned on those facts during cross-examination," he wrote in an email.
Two of the affidavits — filed by using Chad William Coates and Jason Taylor — mention another tenant of the property and conflicts the group has had with them.
In one, the group's submission claims they had blocked off part of the parking lot to "protect" themselves. Access to the parking lot is an issue raised by the landlords. Justice Gomery ordered that TUPC must not block other tenants from accessing the lot while waiting for the hearing.
Taylor mentions a man who allegedly displayed "aggression" toward the group. That affidavit goes on to outline "slight problems with some street people around the area," resulting in multiple calls to police, despite Komer previously suggesting the group planned to use the church building as a "24/7 community safe space" where all were welcome.
The other two affidavits were filed by Walter Brian Derksen, also known as "the trucker that never left," and Patrick Sprung, who said he was a contractor hired to install cameras on the property.
In his affidavit, Derksen said the bailiff handed him some court documents and "said presumptuously, 'You are an adult and a member of this organization [TUPC], so do the right thing and deliver these papers to your leader' or words to that effect."
Derksen, who TUPC has posted on social media approximately about hosting an open mic event for, writes that he told the bailiff it was wrong to assume he was affiliated in any way with the group and was "offended" by the interaction.
Sprung said the bailiff kept him from some of the safety equipment he needed to hang cameras high "cause [of] the drug addicts" and trouble downtown, resulting in a loss of $1,000.
TUPC successfully pushed for more time to respond to the owners of the heritage building on St. Patrick Street, with Gomery agreeing to adjourn the hearing by 17 days.
In a notice of appearance dated the day before the first appearance, Saron Gebresellassi, TUPC's lawyer, requested the matter be put off, saying she planned to cross-examine witnesses and submit "compelling audio evidence" of verbal agreements, but these would take time to transcribe.
None of the affidavits filed before the deadline include transcripts. One does reference a voicemail left with the bailiff and said a recording is available.
Komer's court filings also make reference to audio recordings — one where he alleges a verbal agreement with the building owner that rent could be paid on July 15 and another the place he claims the owner "seemed to have no problem" with the church's door being painted red.
His affidavit does mention one other detail of note. It states that on Aug. 31 the group made an offer to settle the eviction matter out of court.
"However … within 10 minutes of having made the offer, it was rejected by the landlord." The next court date is scheduled for Sept. 19.

A Step by Step Guide to Pet Friendly Real Estate
Step One: Finding an Agent
When it comes to shopping for a Real Estate Professional, there are many places to start. As of December 2006, there were over 2 million Real Estate Agents across the United States. With approximately 75% of people turning to the Internet to start their Real Estate Search, you go to your favorite search engine and depending on your search results you have to sort through the clutter of hundreds or thousands of Real Estate Websites. All the Web sites start looking the same and you quickly become bored or even frustrated. So how do you sort through the confusion to choose an Agent that's right for you and understands your specific Pet Friendly needs?
Tumblr media
Getting to know the specialties of a Pet Friendly Real Estate Agent is an important, but sometimes a difficult thing to do. This all comes down to the Agent's ability to set themselves apart in the competitive Real Estate market and be the expert in their area of specialization. There are few "Pet Friendly" Agents in today's market that are marketing themselves in the most effective way. It is even more difficult to find a Pet Friendly Agent who specializes in your town or city.
If pets are an important factor in your Real Estate decisions you need to find a Resource that is dedicated just to Pets and Pet Friendly Real Estate. http://www.PetRealtyNetwork.com is a good example of a Pet Friendly Real Estate Website - dedicated to Pet Friendly Real Estate and Pet Friendly Real Estate Agents. You can meet other Pet Friendly Agents in your town, across town, or even across the Country and even obtain information about other Pet Resources such as relocating with your pet or submitting your pet's photo.
Step Two: Selling a Pet Friendly Property
When preparing a Pet Friendly property for sale, you have a big task ahead of you. It is important to make any property for sale as attractive as possible, but a Pet Friendly property can have a few more challenges. Pet hair has a tendency to find the deepest nooks and crannies in a home and if a home has a distinct pet odors, potential buyers may skip on the property. Your Pet Friendly Agent may suggest a few simple everyday maintenance chores that that can add to the appeal of your property.
o Vacuuming and cleaning your carpets and even your furniture on a regular basis will remove pet hair and dander and is a quick and simple step to keep your home looking neat. To reduce the amount of hair to be vacuumed, make a habit of brushing your pet regularly, which will also keep your pet's coat healthy.
o Keep up on your 'Doggy Duty', which means keeping your yard clean at all times! To a potential buyer a dirty yard could equate with a dirty home.
o Keeping litter boxes clean and covered. Cat urine is a very distinct and difficult smell to eliminate. Keep the litter box in a well ventilated area, clean the litter box often, and consider an odor-reducing kitty litter.
o Have a plan for open houses or scheduled showings of your home. Some people are terrified of animals or even allergic. It is best to remove the pet from your home during a showing or an open house. If that is not possible, or would be stressful for your pet, consider keeping your pet in a crate or ask a friend or relative to pet sit.
o De-clutter your home, including pet toys, pet beds and crates and pet photos. Remember that even if you are Pet Friendly, a potential buyer may not be.
Step Three: Buying a Pet Friendly Property
You can expect your Pet Friendly Agent to be the Pet Friendly Real Estate expert. That means being knowledgeable about everything about a Property from the fenced yard to the local pet parks and Veterinary clinics. After all, you are not just looking for a home is suitable for you but for your whole family - pets included. A Pet Friendly Agent will start by asking you some initial qualifying questions: Are you a dog owner, cat owner, horse or farm owner? The following are examples of a few other topics you can expect that your Pet Friendly Agent will discuss with you:
o Pet Restrictions. You will commonly find pet restrictions in condominiums or deed-restricted neighborhoods. It is critical that you and your Pet Friendly Agent know ahead of time what those restrictions are, if any. They may include the number of pets, size of pet, breed restrictions (even for mixed breeds!) or parking restrictions for horse trailers.
o Veterinary Clinics, Specialty and Emergency Hospitals. In the event of an emergency, it is critical to be close to a 24 hour Emergency Hospital. Luckily, an increasing number of Emergency Hospitals also double as Specialty Hospitals. With the advancement of Veterinary Medicine, you can now provide the very best care for your pet if he or she requires specialty or emergency care and the convenience of a local Hospital may mean life or death for your pet.
o Pet Amenities. The everyday conveniences of safe walking or horse trails, stables, doggy pick-up stations, grooming and boarding facilities, and fenced in exercise areas are great examples of what makes an ordinary property a Pet Friendly property.
o Evacuation. If the potential property you are interested in purchasing is in a natural disaster Evacuation zone, would you have an Evacuation plan for your pets? Evacuation involves a great deal of preparation, especially for horses, and there is usually little notice of an impending disaster. You must be willing to prepare a solid Evacuation plan in place to ensure the safety of your pets.
Step Four: Moving Day
You have found your perfect agent, sold or purchased your Pet Friendly Property, and now it is time to pack up and move. Whether you are moving across town, across country or from another country - you have a big task ahead of you. Preparation is key to a successful move, keeping your pet's safety in mind:
o Identification. Rule #1 in moving with your pet is properly identifying your pet with an identification tag and sturdy collar. Make sure your pet's tag includes your destination location and telephone number and a mobile number, so you can be reached easily. Your prior address or telephone number will be useless if you have already moved.
o Medications, Food, and Veterinary Records. Keep a current copy of your pet's vaccinations in a convenient location and not packed away in the moving truck. If traveling is stressful for your pet, consult your veterinarian about ways that might lessen the stress of travel. Depending on your destination, your pet may also need additional vaccinations, medications, and health certificates. Keep at least one week's worth of food and medication in case of emergency.
o Crates and Containment Systems. There are many different types of travel crates on the market, and many are lightweight and collapsible just for traveling purposes. Make sure your pet is familiar with the crate you will be using for transportation by gradually introducing him to the crate before your trip. Be sure the crate is sturdy enough for stress-chewers or he could make an escape.
o Traveling by car It is best to travel with your dog in a crate, but if your dog enjoys car travel, you may want to accustom him to a restraining harness. For your safety as well as theirs, it is ALWAYS best to transport cats in a well-ventilated carrier. Never keep your pet in the open bed of a truck, or the storage area of a moving van. In any season, a pet left alone in a parked vehicle is vulnerable to being injured, harmed or stolen. Plan ahead by searching for pet friendly hotels to find overnight lodging during your move, and have plenty of kitty litter and plastic bags on hand for Doggy Duty.
o Keeping your pet secure. Pets can feel vulnerable on moving day. Keep your pet in a safe, quiet place, such as the bathroom on moving day with a PETS INSIDE sign on the door to keep off-limits to friends and professional movers.
o Air Travel. If traveling by air, first check with the airline about any pet requirements or restrictions to be sure you have prepared your pet to be safe and secure during the trip. Give yourself plenty of time to work out any arrangements necessary including consulting with your veterinarian, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
o Preparing your new home. Keep in mind that your pets may be frightened and confused in new surroundings. To reduce the chance of escaping due to fear, or pure excitement to explore the new territory, prepare all the familiar and necessary things your pet will need from day one including food, water, medications, bed, litter box, food and water bowls.
