In this video, I'm checking out a homebrew ColecoVision port of this SG-1000 title, with a few tweaks. They've changed up the scoring system, added an extra map (so there's 3 instead of the original 2), and included this turbo gauge that drains super quickly, making this version quite a bit tougher than the original. The game does crash at some point, but fortunately I'd already completed the loop twice by then, so you still get to see everything it has to offer
Below is the original description for the Sega SG-1000 version…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pacar is an SG-1000 game released by Sega in 1983, blending elements from Namco's Pac-Man and Rally X. Players control a mischievous green car named Pacar through a maze of roads, with the objective of clearing all the small red dots scattered throughout the playfield. Similar to Pac-Man, Pacar moves continuously unless hitting a wall, though unlike Pac-Man, performing a 180-degree turn requires a slower reversing maneuver, encouraging players to plan routes that avoid backtracking. Two types of enemy vehicles pursue Pacar. Blue cars spawn from the central garage and wander around, only following Pacar when nearby. Red cars are more aggressive, appearing randomly behind Pacar and matching its speed increases. Contact with either enemy car costs the player a life.
The game's equivalent of Pac-Man's power pellets occasionally appear after collecting regular dots. These grant temporary invincibility, turning Pacar purple and allowing it to crash into enemy cars for points. This scoring system starts at 200 points and doubles with each successive hit (200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, etc.). While fewer enemies appear on screen compared to Pac-Man, the fact that blue cars instantly respawn from the garage after being hit creates opportunities for substantial point combos.
Pacar features only two maps that cycle endlessly, with the game claiming a "three-dimensional" aspect because some roads in the first map act as bridges over others. After completing both maps, players advance to the next round, which increases difficulty by adding more blue cars. Round 4 introduces a twist by replacing the three standard blue cars with one faster vehicle, with subsequent rounds adding additional fast cars.
Despite its borrowed elements, Pacar creates its own identity through its vehicular theme and unique scoring mechanics, representing a typical early example of Sega's game design on their first home console.
