This is a spoiler free recommendation because I can't stress enough this experience is heightened by having no idea what the fuck you're getting yourself into. (Plus if it wasn't this would just be 99% me gushing about my favourite little guys)

Part 1 - My personal experience with this show before watching it. (I swear this is important) One fateful day in what was probably 2020 the mediocrity machine known as the youtube recommendation algorithm gave me a clip from an anime I'd never heard of before. This show, from what I had seen, seemed like the biggest pile of heaping garbage.4+ full years later I remember this experience and ever hungry for more obscure media I decided to plunge in and see what this show was about. I then proceeded to watch the wrong show.

Part 2 - What is Bottleman and why does it have two anime of starkly different quality .

This is a bottleman.

They're a toy brand from japan you're unlikely to have heard of. It's gotten 2 separate adaptations as you'll see with a lot of toy tie-ins you don't exactly have to keep making a show with a consistent cast of characters because the main point is the actual toys being advertised.Bottleman is weird because the two anime share characters but not plot so it's like a peek into a dark fucked up alternate reality.The show that I had burnt into my retinas that day on youtube was the web series Cap Revolution Bottleman

Part 3 - THE ACTUAL SHOW THIS POST IS ABOUT !!!! Cap Revolution Bottleman DX!

It's a fundamentally different experience.I don't expect anyone to think this but I don't think Bottleman DX is like, an artistic masterpiece, it's just a solid toy tie-in. It's utterly absurd

My fondness of this show originally stemmed from a sort of ironic enjoyment but , man, this show brings me genuine joy now.The real reason you'd have for watching this show are it's characters. They're all so different and fun. Unfortunately the first few episodes of the show were somewhat difficult for me to get through but they're fully worth sitting through for what comes after.Also, all the characters are named and themed after drinks. If you're kind of slow on picking up on this stuff like me you'll go through several episodes not knowing until the realisation hits you like a truck. The main characters name is Coga Cota. And I didn't realise what the fuck was up until like episode 5. Even if you don't watch it I just appreciate sitting through this because I need others to know about this show.

Many of the characters are also named after bottled drinks

like the protagonist...Cota Coga.

Or Dew Yamamoto (Yama meaning mountain).

Takara/Tomy tried to market a toy that just shoots plastic soda bottle caps with extreme force and they tried to make a dramatic anime about playing with them in tournaments. They don’t even come to life or anything in the show?!

The tournaments have these two soda bottle announcer girls that feel ripped off from Splatoon

They try SO hard to make it look cool but it’s still children shooting pieces of trash at each other I’m sorry

Synopsis of Cap Kakumei Bottleman DX English Subbed

Bottleman is a shooting sport that has grown in popularity all over the world. After accidentally acquiring the mysterious new Bottleman Colamaru DX, the main character, Cota Coga, is drawn into the world of Bottle Battles and gradually becomes obsessed with the game. The other main character, Ryo Hocari, who was educated as a gifted student but despised Bottleman for some reason, returns to the world of Bottle Battles for a specific reason. Cota and Ryo engage in Bottle Battles, sometimes clashing, sometimes cooperating. They face rivals who want to become the Bottle King, the pinnacle of all Bottle Battlers, as well as annoying friends. A mysterious organisation seeks out Colamaru DX's revolutionary function. After a series of events, including the mysterious disappearance of the Bottle King, are Cota and Ryo still aiming to be the Bottle King? A brand new Bottle Battle has begun, full of mystery and exhilaration!

like this looks so good... idt its out yet but i want it i want it NOWWW it gives me vibes like beyburst but if the bladers were like 16 and it was more like a coming of age story yk. im speculating but yea cota coga has such a cute design in this art style i wanna watch it so bad

GOD. I'm adding this to my watchlist! I feel with this sort of stuff is hit or miss but I'm really hoping that it turns out awesome :3 Even if not I HEART bad anime

Observations:

It's B-Daman but you shoot bottle caps. This is a real toy you can buy

Literally everybody important is named after a soft drink

Speaking of names, the main character's best friends don't even get names until after Episode 8's credits

Main character Cota Coga's strategy is to charge his shots to be as powerful as possible, which will break the SHIT out of the toy if you actually try it

He also breaks several rules, including firing a cap at another kid on-screen immediately after getting his Bottleman

The main rival, Hokari, apparently trains for his matches by lifting solid gold bottle-shaped weights

He also has a screen in his weight room that is apparently programmed to show a live feed of every single match Cota gets into

This kid is definitely not cishet

You challenge someone to a battle by drinking whatever liquid is inside your Bottleman, which teleports you to a virtual arena in a geyser of that liquid

What the hell is the virtual bottle girls' jobs? They're clearly referees and commentators, but Orange Soda Lady is apparently also Cota's coach???

Also spectators are spontaneously teleported into the arena as actual drink bottles with human faces

That old yellow guy (the tournament host?) Is the single most obviously evil person I've ever seen in an anime. He looks like Dr Wily with Waluigi's mustache, laughs evilly every single time he speaks, and in the credits he's shown diving into a pool of bottle caps like Scrooge McDuck

What the HELL is the mentor character's age. He somehow looks like a child and an adult at the same time

He also sounds like YGOTAS Tristan but infinitely more annoying in the English dub

There's a fucking street gang whose MO is to force people to uncontrollably spin vertically like a fucking motorcycle wheel (they even play the right sound effect)

Like, not like Sonic, just standing straight up while spinning end-over-end

Why are they doing this? To get people to exercise more

Also, Hokari's Bottleman is basically named Watersports. Make of that what you will

I just binge-watched the first eight episodes of Bottleman. I could not tell you why.
