Enhance Your Space with Wool Area Rugs - Finding the Perfect 8x10 Rug On Sale
Looking to add warmth and elegance to your home? Consider wool area rugs, especially the versatile and popular 8x10 area rugs. These rugs not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your space but also provide comfort and durability. This article will guide you through the benefits of wool area rugs, the advantages of the 8x10 size, and how to find the best deals during rug sales.
The Allure of Wool Area Rugs
Wool area rugs have been a classic choice for interior decor for centuries. Renowned for their luxurious feel, durability, and natural insulation properties, these rugs create a cozy ambiance in any room. Their ability to resist stains and wear makes them an excellent long-term investment. Additionally, wool's resilience to high-traffic areas makes it a practical and stylish choice for both residential and commercial spaces.
The Versatility of 8x10 Area Rugs
The 8x10 size is a popular choice among area rugs, offering a perfect balance between spaciousness and fitting into various room layouts. These rugs are versatile enough to be the centerpiece in a living room, adding a touch of elegance under the coffee table, or to define a cozy reading nook. Their size provides adequate coverage for open areas and comfortably accommodates furniture, anchoring the room's design elements.
Benefits of Buying On Sale
Finding wool area rugs, especially 8x10 sizes, on sale offers excellent value for your investment. Rug sales provide the opportunity to obtain high-quality, stylish rugs at more affordable prices. This not only saves money but also allows you to consider premium options that might be otherwise out of budget at regular prices. Look for sales in local stores, online retailers, or during seasonal clearance events to grab the best deals.
Shopping Tips for Wool Area Rugs on Sale
When shopping for wool area rugs on sale, it's essential to consider certain aspects. Focus on factors such as rug construction, pile height, and density. Assess the quality of the wool and the rug's construction, as these aspects determine the rug's longevity. Additionally, inspect the design, color, and pattern to ensure they complement your space and decor.
Where to Find Deals
You can find fantastic deals on wool area rugs, including 8x10 sizes, in a variety of places. Local rug stores often have seasonal sales or clearance events. Online retailers offer a vast selection and occasionally provide exclusive discounts. Keep an eye on special sales days, such as Black Friday or end-of-season sales, where prices are significantly reduced. Also, explore outlet stores or consider purchasing directly from manufacturers for better deals.
Conclusion: Elevate Your Space with Wool Rugs
Wool area rugs, particularly in the versatile 8x10 size, are an excellent addition to any home. They provide comfort, durability, and timeless elegance to your space. When seeking the best deals, be sure to consider the rug's quality, style, and size, and explore various retailers or sales events to find the perfect rug that not only enhances your space but also fits your budget. Invest in a wool area rug and elevate your home with both style and functionality.

FOOD SERVICE AREAS (F & B Outlets)
Restaurants and their subdivisions-There are many dining areas in the hotel where food and beverages service personnel provide/serve food and beverages to the guest. In any big hotel we can find minimum five different types of restaurants. The number of outlets can be more if the need is there.
In hotels the provision of different outlets is there because clientele of the hotels demands it. Suppose a guest who is staying with the hotel needs food to be served in his room then we can not deny him by saying “please come to the restaurant down the floor and have your meal there”. For this situation a good hotel must have the provision of Room Service so that guest can be served his food and beverage in the room itself by the Room Service department or in room dining (IRD)
We can say it is important to have different types of restaurants in the hotel for following reasons:
# All the meal of the day requires different types of restaurant. Like we can not offer breakfast in the specialty or bar because of its different setup.
# If only one outlet provides food & beverage to all the guest coming to the outlet it can not control the rush and does not provide its services properly to its guest.
# Licensing policy is another reason. We can not serve food & beverage anywhere. Like to serve hard drinks, hotel need to have bar license and bar.
#Different cuisines requires different ambience, sitting plan, setup for complete meal experience.
#Different style of service also an important factor for different types of restaurant.
Following are the different types of restaurant found in the hotels-
SPECIALTY RESTAURANT
· It is known for the single cuisine or some specific cuisine like Indian, Chinese, thai.italian etc.

Instead of table service, there are food-serving counters/stalls in a line. Customers take the food as they walk along, the line.
There are often stations where customers order food and wait while it is prepared, particularly for items such as hamburgers or tacos which must be served hot and can be quickly prepared.Alternatively, the patron is given a number and the item is brought to their table.
Sometimes, for some food items and drinks, customers collect an empty tray or container, pay at the cash-desk, and fill the container after the payment.
Free second servings are often allowed under this system.

Chapter 67 - Never Give Up
Eric
Morning meetings were always a pain in my ass. Especially when they drug me away from the rapidly dwindling down time I had available to spend with Kat. Last night had been a long one. Spent with Chase...chasing down informants and leads in our investigation for getting something done about Marcus Eaton.
That meant a few night raids on factionless. We had to be even more careful than normal because Chase and I knew now there was an element that might be on the right side of the law as far as factionless could be really.
It also meant I couldn’t tell Kat what was up and that isn't sitting well with me at all. I needed to find a way to keep whatever anger I had about Marcus, the factionless and this whole damn investigation out of my time or interactions with Kat.
It was fucking up the training sessions because I was using it as an outlet and she was goddamn letting me. I knew it was because she felt anger herself but also because she was choosing to see it as all part of the training.
Chase and I had been confronted by Zach last night. Kat had been upset about all the not so quiet whispering about me and what everyone was assuming I was doing to her. The three of us knew that this helped with keeping rumors of favoritism down so we would have to let it all play out.
It wasn’t like they were exactly untrue. I was being downright brutal with her. Even Chase was going harder on her than I think he had been trying to at the first. Going one on one with her himself he saw what I did. She thrived on it. There was something in her that made me want to push harder and harder each time, trying to find her breaking point.
I still felt the guilt afterwards when I got a first hand look at the aftermath. That was dulled somewhat by the fact that she was getting in some serious damage of her own to both of us. Watching Chase walk away limping and a split lip had caused a me to feel like I had a cheshire cat grin on my face whenever I thought back to that memory.
There was good and bad going on for me but it felt like everything was off and I hated that feeling. I have always hated my routine being fucked with and it had been royally screwed with lately. We still did the morning coffee in the dining hall but that was all that was the same since Kat had become a regular part of our day to day routine.
Seeing as how the shower and patching up after the morning training session had also become any real alone time I had with Kat, Chase and Zach had decided it was best to leave us to that time. They would show up a bit later and we left for our day to different area. But it was all off because there was so much that we weren’t talking about now.
This morning had been particularly strained after we had finally been able to track down a lead. None other than someone I had been really looking forward to having a….chat with...when I had first heard his name.
Alistair. The former Abnegation that was now even lower than the factionless. Something that I had never thought possible. It seems that he has been rejected by both sides of the factionless.
It turns out that he was kicked out of his initiation in Abnegation when it was found out he was carrying on relations with a dependent of the faction. The fact that it had also been a male dependent only a year younger was what saw him booted. He was bitter and angry and it was easy to see how it could confuse Kat so much to see how much he had changed.
Candor truth serum in one of their very secure and high clearance cells got everything we needed for a start. There were definite indications that Marcus was up to something with the factionless but so far nothing concrete on what that could be.
There are discrepancies on the supplies and it has Marcus scrambling to try and cover tracks now that Erudite can be present to observe and even help account for things. The most disturbing factor were raids and instances of supplies being stolen that weren’t reported right away.
Personally what was more disturbing were the rumors and things Alistair had observed that led him to believe that Marcus either allowed or gave information out for these. It was why he believed he was really booted out of Abnegation. Something he had witnessed during his initiation time had him in a tense questioning with Marcus three nights before he was ‘caught’ in his compromising position.
I am thumbing through my tablet going over normal security reports when someone slides into the seat right beside me and pushes a cup of coffee towards me. I don’t even look up, thinking it is just Chase.
I grab the cup and mumble my thanks when the voice of the reply has my head and eyebrow raising.
“No problem. Looked like you could use a cup.”
Raze is a few years younger than Max and came up in Dauntless when things were so much different. He had resisted becoming a leader for many years from what I am told and that had driven a wedge between him and Max. I have always thought that Max saw it as Raze abandoning or turning his back on his faction.
Because of this he wasn’t made Second in Command when it came time to replace Harrison; I was. Maybe it is just my paranoia but I have always felt the older man resented me for it.
So him out of the blue coming to sit beside me or offering me coffee has me puzzled.
“Raze.” My greeting sounds more like a question, I am that surprised by his presence.
He tilts his head and gives me a toothy smile. One that has been known to make his opponents in the fights he frequents in the Pit almost piss themselves. It might also have something to do with him being 6’2, 215 lbs of solid sleek and deadly muscle. He might be close to Max in age but neither of them look it and you wouldn’t want to piss them off either.
He might intimidate others, whether this is cocky or not, he never has me. I have been sure to stay on his neutral side though.
“Eric.” He greets back with that smile still in place before taking a drink out of his cup while looking around the smaller conference room being used for today’s meeting. It is extremely early and we happen to be the only people at the table. I can hear a few people milling outside in the reception area that branches off to a few of the junior leaders offices. Probably sitting around the table that has the coffee, muffins and other breakfast items available so it isn’t necessary to make a trip to the dining hall.
I take a sip from my coffee and wait, putting down my tablet in the process.
Raze swallows and gives a slight grimace before looking in his cup. “I hate the shit they have up here. I usually stick to making my own and bringing it. Sometimes I get down to the dining hall and grab a cup there.”
I nod in agreement about the coffee. It is shit. I think it is just the damn person that brews it up here. Maybe she spits in it...who knows. The thought makes me wrinkle my nose and put the cup on the table and move it away from me.
“Same here.” I replied and saw him smirk then push his own cup away.
“Maybe I should join you sometime. I’ve seen you a few times at ass early in the morning in the dining hall.”
He is looking at me from the side of his eyes and relaxed in his chair as if he doesn’t have a care in the world.
There is something in his tone but I can’t place it.
“Been my routine for years.” I nod, still trying to pick up where he was going with that.
“Seems like there has been a bit of a change to that routine, at least from the rumors I was hearing. I admit I was curious and had to check it out for myself this morning.”
Any emotion wipes from my face when I get exactly where he is going with this. I still don’t let on though. “Not sure exactly what rumors you are talking about. There are so many to pick from when it comes to me.”
I shrug and pick up my tablet, pretending to me unconcerned.
I feel his eyes on me and I turn my head slightly to look at him.
“I never was one for trying to be slick and play games so I am going to come right out and ask this. What is going on between you and the initiate? The one that was sitting at the dining hall table with you this morning. I want to know if the rumors are true.”
I feel my temper rising at his tone and the gleam he has in his eyes right now. “Again...there are so many rumors. Maybe you could help me out and tell me which one exactly you are talking about.”
Raze drums his fingers along the table and looks out the door again. Whatever it is he doesn’t want anyone else to hear for some reason.
“There are rumors you are trying to kill the girl. Then there are other, smaller in number mind you, that you might be trying to make her a protege of some kind, to spite Four.”
A little bit of amusement fills me at the fact that those two are probably the most whispered rumors going around Dauntless. Nothing at all about me and her being in a relationship.
Not sure how I fucking feel about that.
“Those are….interesting...assumptions.” I reply with a twist of my lips.
“Considering I saw the condition of her myself...I can say I find some merit to them. What I find even more interesting is the training session I observed this morning just after you left the dining hall.”
All traces of a smile leave me as I turn to him fully and my eyes go deadly. He smiles that toothy smile at me and his eyes spark with menace.
“Oh, I would watch how you look at me boy. Remember you might be second in command but I still have seniority on you. Anything….unfortunate... happens to Max...and it won’t mean you automatically take up the helm. I hold sway in this faction when and if I want to.”
“But you haven’t wanted or even tried to...and that counts for something here in this faction.” I reply back softly to him.
We stare at each other for a few more seconds. He is still drumming his fingers slowly on the table.
“I am going to let this slide only because what I saw peaked my interest enough. I will also give you a boon….you Erudite are all about those...aren’t you?”
My fists clench on the table in the slightest and I want to curse myself for the show of how much his dig got to me.
He doesn’t wait for a reply before he carries on. “It just so happens my interest was already peaked before this morning. In fact I was in that dining hall this morning because of something I overheard and observed last night.”
I tried not to let any worry seep through. I am not sure what he would have heard. Chase and I were out on the raid with Zeke last night. It was classified but if Raze wanted to he could have gotten the information somehow.
“That was?” I ask slowly.
“That initiate…” He looks at me and raises an eyebrow…”Kat, I believe is her name. She seems to be pretty good friends with those two friends of yours.”
I shrug in reply. “I don’t dictate who Zach and Chase deign to befriend.”
He gives a chuckle. “Whatever Coulter. Just so happens I was at the same bar they were at last night and heard some pretty interesting conversation.”
Fuck! I was going to kill them!
I motion with my eyebrows to tell him to go on. I don’t trust my voice to speak.
“Seems that little girl is a bit of a fireball. I can admit what she said had merit...so it got me interested. Enough that I want to know what the fuck you think you are doing with her in those training sessions.”
I was torn in my reply. When he was speaking, there at the beginning there had been a tinge of respect or something close to admiration. It turned as hard and deadly as his eyes when he looked back to me.
“I wasn’t aware you cared one way or another on the methods of training on incoming inductees. I have always been left to my own methods before.”
He grunts and narrows his eyes. “We won’t get into what I think about any of what you just tried to lay down. You know damn well that even for you what is going on with her is beyond the normal. I want to know why.”
“The initiate has had several and continues to have instances that warrant punishment.” I hold up a hand to stay him about to call me out. “You are right in assuming that isn’t the only reason for them. Each incident could have seen her thrown out but...I do see something that could be a decent soldier. I can’t let those things slide though.” I shrug and look at my tablet again as if it should be a given what the rest of my answer is.
“So it is a little of both the rumors?” He asks finally with a slight amusement in his tone.
I smirk without looking at him. “Something like that.” I reach out and take the cup of coffee again and take a small sip. “So what exactly did you hear that prompted this friendly little chat?”
Raze looks at me and gives another smile but I can tell he isn’t going to answer. Instead he grabs his cup and rises. Before he moves away completely he looks at me with a smirk of his own. “I look forward to that cup of coffee tomorrow.”
Then he is off with me scowling at his back at his retreat to the little waiting area.
“Fuck.” I mutter under my breath angrily and then shoot off a message to Zach demanding what the fuck they had done last night.
My fist slams onto my desk as I growl out my frustration then try to breathe it out.
“I don’t know why you are getting all worked up. It wasn’t like it was anything big or something to set off a red flag that she’s divergent.” Zach replied blandly to my outburst.
“It sure as fuck drew unwanted attention to her though.” I snarled out the obvious.
Zach was quiet for a few minutes as we both sat thinking. I was thinking of how to contain or do damage control on another leaders interest in Kat. Also trying to think how Kat, Peter and Zach’s bar chat could be interpreted or what damage it could do if anyone else got wind of it.
“Look.” Zach sighed and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. “Whatever comes of it we will deal with it then like we have been this entire time. I can tell you that everything she said was true but also it is a way for her to work through this shit more openly. It will help all of them.”
I gritted my teeth as I tried to let my logical side cool my temper. My brother continued on seeing that his words were having their desired effect.
“Think about it this way. We have three divergents in this group and their times are pretty good. Well, Kat’s will be once she gets over the need to fight every damn thing. This way having all those initiates talking about their fears with each other; it will give a reason for why they are doing so well. There are former Erudite and Dauntless born in that mix of initiates talking things out. They are going to be voicing ways to get through them that would explain how someone like Tris could be doing well.”
I let out a slow breath and nodded. I still wasn’t concerned with anyone else besides Kat really. If it wasn’t for the fact that the other two divergents we know about are close to her, one her sister and the other a brother in all but blood; then I wouldn’t be going out of my way to do anything for either of them.
It wasn’t that I wanted them caught or wished harm on them. I just couldn’t focus on anything but Kat. Knowing this but also realizing who those two are to her, it became Chase’s job to sort out how to help the other two.
“Fine.” I finally grumble out. “I get and she is right. I have to say I tend to side with Peter on this.” I grimaced deeply at this and Zach gave a snort of laughter after smirking. “No matter your new found fondness for the ex-Candor, I still can’t bring myself to like him.”
Zach shrugs but get a little red in the ears. “Maybe that’s because he can be just as big of an asshole as you. Maybe it cuts a little close to home and shows you exactly how you are.”
I grin widely then give him a mock pout. “Is Peter your poor man’s Eric?”
Zach glared and I could see real discomfort under the playful look he shot back at me. “Sure, we can go with that.”
I sigh and look at him apologetically. “Look man. I’m sorry. I just….well I mean...really? Peter? You could do so much better.”
He rolls his eyes back at me and laughs, the tension draining. “Nothing is happening. We are just friends.”
I can’t help it. I let out a real laugh that booms through my office and nod with a grin. “Yeah and that is exactly what I kept telling myself about Kat and I. Maybe you will have better luck than I did with that lie.”
Now he full on blushes but changes the subject to the investigation.
It was a strange chain of events that brought someone to finally peak interest in my friend. I still couldn’t really believe the turn of events that had Zach finally revealing why he had been so insistent Peter wouldn’t be a threat in any kind of romantic way with Kat.
Whatever brought it about, it had actually worked out rather well.
In the case that he did step out of line in any way I could still get my end of the bargain. I now had even more reason to practice my former anatomy skills if he did anything to hurt Zach.
For my brother’s sake I hoped that would never be a threat I had to carry through with because I wouldn’t hesitate if it came down to him or Kat.
I sit inside my apartment with Zach and Chase. There are bottles of beer in front of all of us and Chase has footage loaded onto the vid screen on my wall. We have taken to coming here after the days sims and reviewing all the initiates but specifically Kat, Uri and Tris’.
It is in the second week of the second stage of training and most everyone has gone through more than two to three of their fears. There are a few that are still stuck on the first or second one and look like they might never get past them.
Thankfully Kat isn’t one of those people.
It still pisses me off as well as amazes me that she has every ability to manipulate the sim, but she just doesn’t. Like there is a part of her brain that she has unconsciously turned off to prevent her from doing just that.
Tris is the opposite. She manipulates the sim with such fluidity that it is hard to tell she has even done it.
Uri is a combination of the two girls. On some fears it is involuntary reaction and the sim changes before he gets it back on track. Other times I can tell from Chase’s warnings to him and conversations with the young Pedrad, that he has worked to make sure not to change anything.
The initiates talking their fears out did seem to help those that could be helped. Attitudes were better about those that had the better times although I didn’t know how long that was going to last after rankings come out tomorrow.
Even Kat had gotten some help with her clown phobia from an offhanded suggestion by Will at lunch one day. It was playfully suggested maybe she just needed to go find a real life clown to get beating it to death out of her system. Will had suggested that maybe more exposure outside of the fear sims could help her to get over it.
Exposure therapy. I recognized it as one of the therapy treatments used in Erudite to help overcome a number of things. A more sinister use of it was exposing research or lab assistants to experiments that bordered on torture to build up their resistance for compassion or any kind of feelings of it being wrong.
Kat had taken it to heart and the run of theatre visits to view clown movie after clown movie began. Tonight she was at another one of them even though she had already passed the fear with the clown in it and moved on. She was on her third fear as of today.
Normally one of us would be there to make sure she didn’t freak out like the first few times she even tried to talk about it. Tonight we had this and other plans.
“You think she will be ok with just her friends?” Zach asked with a frown as we had moved on to watch Kat’s sim runs.
She was still fighting those fucking clowns. Still being ejected from the fear after slowing her breathing and heart rate in reflex of battle. The simulation programming is set up that after so many successful attempts to regulate those two bodies reactions; it will move the subject on. Kat has insisted that was cheating because she wasn’t doing it on purpose.
I nod in answer with a frown as I watch the sim change from her clowns to one of the same building. In this one bindings of some kind shooting from the ground in all directions and pinning her to the ground. The first time she went through this one she had tried and struggled to fight before it kicked her out. It still takes her a little bit to fight her own instinct so she can calm her body down and move on.
Her third fear is almost identical to one of her sisters but is a fairly common one for everyone. In some shape of form most everyone has a fear sim that has them in a body of water and in danger of drowning. This is the one that Kat has even admitted she doesn’t know if she can get through because the way to get out is to give up. To let go of control and go under.
This morning after she had confronted me about her fear that Tris is divergent she had also told me she was afraid she would never get past this fear. I had told her the truth, that I had almost the same problem.
In one of my fears I had been under ice with no way to get out. I couldn’t break through and I knew the only way to get out of that sim was so swim away from the ice knowing I was going to die. She already knew that I had been coached on how to get through my sims by just concentrating on regulating my breathing and to slow my heart rate. Even with that it hadn’t been easy to just not do anything.
“Zeke will be there along with his brother, Lynn, Mar and of course Peter. Even I have to admit that Peter has been pretty helpful in trying to keep Kat calm during all of this.”
I can see from the corner of my eye that Zach gives a small smug smile while I toss a glare at Chase. He just shrugs and goes back to watching the sims with me.
“If what we find out is true...are you going to tell Kat?” Chase asks softly after we had been watching footage of a different kind.
Some of it was live feed and some of it was old feed.
My hand tightened around the bottle of beer I was tipping up and drinking from. They were both looking at me until I drained the bottle in one go and it slammed it back down on the coffee table.
“No.” I ground out.
I heard both of them sigh loudly and I can tell they aren't happy with my answer.
“All these fucking secrets. We said we would never do that.” Zach started to complain.
“You think I don’t fucking know that! You think I don’t feel like shit having to keep all this from Kat? Knowing how she is going to react when it does all come out? You guys aren’t the one that it is going to come down on and I accept that responsibility. It is my call because it is needed. She needs to focus and not worry about any of that other shit.”
“That’s true but this has nothing to do with divergence or the investigation. She has a right to know about her sister and Four.” Chase offers and I snap.
I pop up and throw the empty bottle across the room and let out a yell.
“Shit.” Zach exclaims at the shatter and spray of glass everywhere.
“Dammit Eric. Calm down.” Chase jumps up and comes over with his hands raised as I whirl around on him.
Calm down! Calm down! I wish I could but I can’t even explain why Four being with Tris pisses me off so much. There is this...unsettled...worried...feeling inside of me and things keep running through my mind. They have been from the first suggestion by Chase that Kat’s sister and Four might be growing closer or are together.
“Talk to us, Eric.” Zach the resident and unofficial therapist of our group coaxes me. “We can’t help do what needs to be done unless we know what's going on.”
“I don't even know what's going on. All I know is I just can’t tell her. If I have my way I will find something to stop this shit now.” I rant while pacing.
“Why? I am trying to understand why them being together is such a big deal.”
Chase looks to me and then I see something in his eyes. Something is clicking for him. He frowns and folds his arms over his chest. “Because you think when she finds out, she will think she chose the wrong person. That knowing she is or has lost him will cause her to try to be with him or regret that she is with you.”
His words, the truth of them, hit me like a ton of bricks. I feel the wind knocked out of me and I bend over a little to hold onto my knees.
Fuck this feeling sucks beyond belief. The hurt I feel just at the thought of losing her at all much less to him. The thought that what I knew all along is right. That there is no way she could really fucking want me.
“Fuck.” I yell and look at the bottle of water being held out to me. I was so thrown off I had actually been fighting off throwing up. I reached out without looking at who was giving it to me and ripped open the lid before chugging some back.
There was a pressure in my chest that also had my breathing all off.
“Fucking perfect. Having a goddamn panic attack.” I mutter out loud and go throw myself back on the couch.
I close my eyes and slow my breathing. I know they are still there but they aren’t saying much. Damn what they must think of me right now.
I brace myself and look back to them. Understanding is all I see but especially from Chase.
“You know that would never be the case. Even if there had never been anything between you two I can tell you that it would never have happened with them.” Zach says with complete certainty.
“I wish I could believe that. I want to believe that. My mind plays on all they shared and how long they knew each other. If he hadn’t done what he did to her…”
“But he did, Eric. There is no changing what he did so don’t even go there. She is here and wants you now. That's what matters. I don’t see that she is going to react well but only because I think she will be hurt about her sister and Four not being open with her.” That seemed to be Zach’s final word on it because he looked away and let me compose myself.
This was the danger of letting someone in and tying so much of yourself to them. In letting emotions take hold of you at all and giving anyone any kind of control over yourself.
We sit in the dark and quiet of my apartment and watch the monitors. When we see what we all expected to see, confirmation that the two ex-abnegation are involved, I know I am at some kind of cross roads.
I can embrace all this bullshit and bad that comes along with letting someone in; or I can turn my back on all of it again. I can harden myself and turn it all off so that I never risk getting hurt. Being destroyed completely. I don’t really fear much. I don’t fear dying but I do fear not dying well. When it comes to Kat it seems like there are nothing but fears plaguing me.
Almost eight years I have been in this faction and I never really had to embrace my fears, not until this moment.
I lean my head back and watch as Chase cycles through the cameras in the compound until he stops on one that focuses on who I need to see the most at this moment.
Kat is in the Pit with her friends; laughing and smiling at whatever Zeke and Uriah are going on about. Leaning forward slowly I release a pent up breath of frustration.
What was I thinking. There is no way I am walking away from this or from her. Not only would it be cowardly as fuck and giving up; something there is no chance in hell I would do. It also wouldn’t matter, she’s in me too deep.
She’s in my veins, the air in my lungs...all that poetic bullshit. She’s it. I fucking love this girl and there is no way I am running away from that.

The Design Edit
In the Newhaven studio of furniture-maker Marc Fish, Claudia Barbieri discovers how the designer bends wood to his will.
17th September 2019
ONE MIDNIGHT IN July, the SushiSamba restaurant at 110 Bishopsgate, high above London’s financial district, closed earlier than usual and a team of workmen moved in. Taking infinite care they manoeuvred three intriguing objects, made from around 5,000 wood shavings layered and interleaved with resin, into the service lift that whisked them to the 39th floor of the building formerly known as Heron Tower. There, working against the clock with chronometric coordination, installers, electricians and riggers assembled the objects into a 2.5-metre-wide, light-emitting, revolving conch.
“We had to make the pieces the right size to fit through a metre-wide lift door – there was just 15 millimetres clearance,” says the designer Marc Fish. “At 4 o’clock in the morning it was finally being winched into place, just as the sun was rising behind it.” SushiSamba’s marine mollusc is pure Fish: organic form; technical complexity; extreme precision and creative innovation. “It was quite a special night for us. The restaurant opened at 10 am the next morning all cleaned up, almost as if we hadn’t been there – except there was a large shell hanging from the ceiling,” says Fish.
In the past ten years Fish, now 48, has emerged as a rising star of art furniture, with clients from as far afield as Hollywood queuing for up to two years for his creations – and international students flocking to learn his methods at the Robinson House Studio Furniture School. What attracts clients, students and design mavens is a particular fusion of traditional and high-tech craft skills, daring aesthetics and experimental materials science.

Despite his global status he still operates from Newhaven, a nondescript south coast port near Brighton with a tradition of furniture-making, where he first set up a studio cum workshop 22 years ago. Now, in an unpretentious single-storey backstreet shed, up to fifteen would-be cabinet makers at a time learn traditional woodworking skills under the eye of master craftsman Theo Cook (Fish’s partner in the school, and a pupil of the 20th century British and American masters Edward Barnsley and James Krenov).
In the main workshop next door, three makers on a recent day are working on a mirrored pair of ‘Ethereal’ console tables – as well as a surreal seven-foot high armchair that Salvador Dali could have conceived for Game of Thrones. In his studio Fish lays swatches of ink from a broad -tipped pen onto a sheet of paper: calligraphic doodles that may germinate into an exotic new species of Fish furniture, or end in the waste bin.

Furniture has function and Fish takes care to tick that box. An ‘Ethereal’ console table may swirl and curve but it’s flat enough at its centre to hold a phone or a lamp; a ‘Babel’ drinks cabinet may look like a man-sized caterpillar’s cocoon but, hinged open, it displays bottles and glasses. Still, what fires his imagination is form. “It’s nice to make sculpture, and not to have practical limitations forced on you,” he says. “Often you come up with a form and then you think, ‘How do I make it into a table?’ Almost as an afterthought, you put a glass top on it. I don’t want to go down that route anymore. The reality is, a lot of what we do is sculpture.”

While his reputation has soared these past few years, his career path has been anything but linear: in fact it has been almost as sinuous as his signature style. Aged 14 he wanted to be an architect, but he left school at 16 and went to work in a bank for the next seven years. As a hobby, he started restoring vintage Porsche and Volkswagen cars – one of his restored VW campers was bought by the company for its museum in Germany. Then he turned his self-taught metalworking skills to making metal furniture.
For a couple of years he did well. “In 1998/99 we were selling work through three shops in Brighton,” he remembers. “Then those three shops all went bust in three months. Taste suddenly changed. Metal furniture died a death, it was considered cold and sterile. Everybody in Brighton was getting into heavy, chunky dark timber furniture from Indonesia. Suddenly there were no more orders. It was pretty dire.”
By then, the design bug was in his blood. Rather than dwell on the setback, he went with the flow and switched into wood. After studying for a City and Guilds furniture-making qualification, he trained for six months under the cabinetmaker John Lloyd in Ditchling – spiritual home of Eric Gill and the Sussex Arts and Crafts movement.

As his materials evolved, so did techniques and styles. The early metal furniture was, “more Bauhaus, more 1920s, art deco but a little bit contemporary.” After learning to work with wood he spent several years making traditional joinery pieces. Then, in 2009, “I woke up one morning and thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I don’t like what I’m making. There’s no creative outlet’,” Fish remembered. So he decided to change direction.
He set up his school to earn a living from teaching the skills he’d learnt, and in parallel started experimenting with supple wood veneers. Bent into shape, stacked sequentially together, suspended in and bonded together with resin glues, the flexible slivers of wood lent themselves to naturalistic shapes. “I just fell into my design identity,” he says.

His first ‘Nautilus’ edition of tables, like the ‘SushiSamba luminaire’, was inspired by the Fibonacci spiral of a seashell. His ‘Ethereal’ range of desks and chairs draws on the lacy translucency of a skeletal leaf. Perhaps oddly, his own taste lies elsewhere. His favourite designer, he says, is the 1930s French modernist architect Pierre Chareau, a visionary pioneer of the use of mechanical engineering and heterogeneous materials. “I would like his aesthetic in my own home,” Fish says. As for his own work: “I design furniture for a different market. I am not my own market.”
Though his style may bring to mind the voluptuous ripples of Art Nouveau and the fluid idiom of his Irish contemporary Joseph Walsh, Fish denies consanguinity with either. Art Nouveau he dismisses as “almost treacly”, and asked for historical role models he looks no further back than the last century, pointing to the pioneering work of John Makepeace and Wendell Castle.

Walsh he respects; but for all the similarities of conceptual idiom, he says they inhabit different technical worlds. Where Walsh crafts his willowy structures from saw-cut 2-millimetre veneers, Fish works only with thousands of knife-pared veneers, each no more than 0.6 millimetres thick. The thinness of the wood allows it to be bent like paper, without steaming. It’s a technique that he says allows a purer aesthetic. But it is also extraordinarily time-consuming, technically challenging and costly. The ‘Nautilus’ table was built from a stack of 4,000 veneers and took a thousand hours to make.

The translucent resins too, binding the veneers together into batches, are the end-product of a painstaking process of trial-and-error and materials-science research. “We’ve had five resins that we’ve used in the past four years,” Fish says, “We’ve experimented absolutely to death. We’ve had a nightmare journey!” A big challenge is the way the resins react with the wood: to speed up production, the liquid resins are heated to harden faster, but in this curing process exothermic reactions happen that can suck air out of the wood and form bubbles in the resin. Flawed batches go into the bin. “It’s taken us three years to get the technique right,” he said. Everything he does is now made this way. A chair leg, for example, could be cut and shaped more simply out of solid timber, “but it’s important to us that we keep the same narrative running all the way through our work,” Fish says.

Still, narrative and aesthetic purity carry a cost. Though advanced industrial technology has its place – the workshop is equipped with a laser cutter and a three-D printer for mocking up prototype models – there’s no economy of scale from batch production, no compromise on the individuality of every piece, the consideration given to every line and facet. Prices reflect this. The ‘Nautilus’ desk sold for £96,000, and the first ‘Ethereal’ desk (a translucent wisp of Sycamore veneer, resin and carbon fibre), was sold by Todd Merrill at last December’s Miami Design for $130,000. Smaller pieces, such as the ‘Ethereal’ chair taking shape in the workshop for display at this year’s PAD London in October, will be priced nearer £20,000.

That may seem a lot for a chair, however exquisite. But take off the production costs and divide by the hundreds of hours that go into the conception, design and making, and it doesn’t match the return on, say, a Jeff Koons balloon dog. On some of his smaller pieces, such as his intricately constructed memento mori ‘Relic’ vase series, the return on invested time comes in at about £30 an hour. Larger commissions are more profitable: Still, “I don’t think anybody gets into furniture-making for the money,” Fish says. “You get into it for the creative freedom that it gives you.”

The Budget Battle station Workspace
Here are some of the products that make this workspace an Amazing Workspace:
8GB 1600mhz DDR3
I built this PC in January 2017.
I have my reasons for having WiFi. The bathroom and my room are on the same circuit. When the piece of shit bathroom fan turns off, I immediately lose audio, and my computer was crashing as well. After bios and other various updates it no longer crashes. I just have to unplug and re-plug in my audio interface. For those reasons I have been skeptical at investing in wall outlet Ethernet adapters because of the electrical noise caused by the fan on the circuit may impede any gains upgrading from WiFi. Thoughts?
At the time it cost under $500. I could have gotten better used gear, but I had not upgraded my PC in a decade. I couldn't even use my old case. Everything had to be upgraded. I have been team red, so when Linus Tech Tips had a gaming PC build guide for X-mas 2016, I went with the lower tier, as it took out the compatibility issues out of the equation. I was a poor, console peasant -out of the loop with the new sheit. Video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLfUkjUaSdM ,However I went with a VIVO mATX case.
I pieced together my desk by buying the segments on sale second hand. The desk table I re-purposed from a coffee table, and removing the legs along with a couple of filing cabinets. The desk cost $12 total. The dimensions are 56" (140cm) x 24" (60cm) x 28" (72cm). Monitors are a SyncMaster 226BW 1680 x 1050, and a Dell E207WFP 1680 x 1050. Both monitors $10 each second hand, looking to upgrade to 1080p 144hz for my main monitor.
AMD 860K
Also, Yanked a Hyper 212 EVO off Craigslist for a trade ($15).
Chair was less than $5 second hand. I removed the left arm rest because guitar.
RX 480 4G
(Sorry for any taco drips, and dust hares that might offend).
Recently, I found this Tt Poseidon ZX second hand for $5. Was sold as is - some keys didn't work. Took it apart and blasted it with electrical cleaner, and did the o ring mod. Works fine other than some keys stuttering - where I hit a key normal, annd it doess thhhis (for instance). Only randomly though. Not sure if I should start over, or whip out my soldering skills. 5 year warranty my ass! I worked with keyboards so old they still sport the AT port. Glad I didn't waste my money on this new.
Another investment that payed for itself - RP-DH1200. I spent $150 on them 2007, and they have endured daily use. Though, I have replaced the ear pads. Cyanoacrylates have held the cord together for the decade strait jackin'.
120 SSD Kingston
Microsoft SideWinder gaming mouse. I bought this when Circuit City went out of business on clearance for like $20-25 in 2008 (75% off retail). I remember also buying pc100 (or was it pc133) memory, and a jvc car audio deck display model with a busted face clip that I MacGyver-ed then outlived 4 cars.
Steel Series QcK+ Gaming Mouse Pad. Dimensions 15" (450mm) x 17" (400mm). Well worth the $15.
I will get my cable management cherry once I figure out a UPS solution. This is the extent of my RBG lighting. It was free so better than nothing.
The extent of content I create is audio. I have been dabbling with blender tutorials as well as gaming. I have been working on cpu overclocking, but run into stability issues with my A68HM-K motherboard. I have had so much fun working on my battle station, and I am just getting started after a decade of stagnation. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to any input!
EVGA 80+ BRONZE 500W
The only thing I kept was 2 500GB HDDs which I will be upgrading.
This is my back-up at the moment. 8 GB USB 2.
I must have bought this 2008. It is dual channel in and out. It has endured beer spills, and pizza delivery guy drummers for a decade.
Cuts out at times, not sure if its the cord or the mic. Though, not an issue when stationary. Don't lend out microphones to vocalists boys.

We left off in my previous post having spent a few days hanging out in the beachside city of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico before crossing back over the border into the US. The original title for this post was going to be A Tale Of Two Californias, Pt. 2; San Diego, California, because we spent essentially all of our time except for a couple of hours on this leg of the trip in San Diego, however, I realised that I didn’t capture any decent photos while there and the reason will become more evident as you read.
The purpose for our stay in San Diego was because Anna had been inducted into the Macula Society last year and this year we would be attending their 43rd Annual Meeting that would also be hosting a welcome dinner for all new Macula Society members. This was a pretty big deal because, not only is Anna now possibly the youngest member of the society, but she was also one of only three women inducted this time around. Besides the dinner, she would also be presenting at the conference, as well as chairing some events. Let’s now focus on the American leg of this trip.
Tuesday, February 18, 2020 I ended our last post when we were finally able to cross the border back into the US. When we came out on the other side we were a little confused; we were pretty sure that we were in the correct place, but all of the shops and signs were in Spanish and there were hispanic people everywhere. Had we made some kind of mistake, taken a wrong path, and were still in Tijuana? It sure seemed that way, but we hadn’t veered off the common path while crossing and if so, the signs definitely need to be clearer, because we certainly didn’t want to be subjected to that whole immigration process again! We walked around and eventually saw a sign that said “To Mexico” so we were definitely on the US side of the border, it just happened to be almost entirely hispanic as well. We got into an extremely unroadworthy taxi and went to the San Diego International Airport in order to pick up our rental car, a white Hyundai sedan. While Anna was inside the office signing all of the paperwork, it became apparent to me in the fading daylight that the car had a lot of bumps, scuffs, and scratches all over it. I took photos of them all, which Anna showed to the Avis representative, however, he told us not to worry, “You’ve got full coverage.” As soon as we got in the car, another thing became immediately apparent; the inside of this thing absolutely stunk of weed! It honestly smelled like the person who had just returned the car only rented it so they could spend a couple of days hotboxing.
En route to the resort at which we were staying was a giant factory outlet centre so naturally we stopped in there. There were outlets for pretty much every fashion label and store you could think of, this place was enormous, so Anna looked at the clothing outlets and I checked out the shoes and sporting goods ones, but it was almost impossible to find any sneakers that weren’t absolutely hideous. Denim Air Jordan 6s simply shouldn’t exist, but it was only awful stuff like that that I was able to find. As we slowly made our way through this sprawling mass of outlet stores, they began to get cheaper and cheaper until we found ourselves at a store we would see several more times over the coming days — Ross, a clothing outlet with the slogan, “Dress for Less.” I don’t recall seeing these stores when we lived in New York City, maybe they’re just predominantly in California, but apparently Ross is the largest off-price retailer in the US. When I was in my very early twenties, I for a time worked unloading trucks and stacking shelves in a similar store in Melbourne called Myer Goodbuy Clearance Centre, an outlet for excess, end of season, and just generally unsellable stock for the Myer department store chain. That place was just like being in a regular department store and you could get really good stuff at a great price. This particular Ross store was on a whole different level completely! It was kind of laid out like a thrift store with just random clothing items crammed onto racks, except in Ross the items were new and people were just ripping pieces off the racks, looking at them, throwing them on the ground, and then grabbing another. It was like the Wild West in there, people in cowboy hats fighting, but instead of over poker games or cattle rustling, they were fighting over extremely discounted clothes. Definitely a site to behold.
When the factory outlet centre was coming close to closing time, we got back into the weed-infused car and drove in the general direction of San Diego until we came to Rancho Bernardo, a kind of upperclass gated community where our resort, the Rancho Bernardo Inn, was located. Rancho Bernardo Inn is an enormous, Spanish-style resort set on a golf course, but it is also still at least a 30-40 minute Uber ride out of the main parts of town so we were going to be spending a lot of time there. When we arrived, a valet took our car to park it, giving a smile and a nod as the scent wafted out, and we checked into the inn. It was a bit of a maze to find our room, but when we eventually did it was big and seemed like a comfortable way to spend the coming days. The TV was already on when we entered, the home screen and movie options both inexplicably presented by Mario Lopez of Saved by the Bell fame. They must also get a few people stay there who become a little tired of the isolation of the place, because there was also completely free porn access in each room. Here’s a look around ours:
Entering our room once we had found it.
Those wooden doors opened out onto a large balcony, the view from which is the feature image for this post
Looking toward the entrance
Mario doing his thing
I hope that doesn’t mean all the movies star Mario Lopez
Just some of the other entertainment options available
Once we had dumped all of our suitcases in our room we went down to one of the hotel’s restaurants for dinner and then to the hotel bar for a couple of drinks while watching college basketball and playing shuffleboard again like we did in Vancouver. We still don’t know the actual rules to shuffleboard, despite them being posted on the wall in the bar, they just seem too complicated, plus the table had a slightly different layout this time so we continued to do it our way until the bar closed at midnight.
Wednesday, February 19, 2020 Anna registered for the conference, met up with our friend from Spain, Rosa Dolz-Marco, who was also attending, and then I went down to have a coffee with them at the hotel cafe. Rosa had to leave so Anna and I walked around with our drinks, just exploring this vast resort, one so large that staff used golf carts to get around the grounds, and that’s not even including the golf course itself. I was wearing a Brant Bjork t-shirt and I’ve found that a lot of Americans aren’t particularly shy about giving you their opinions or asking questions so I wasn’t all that surprised when a grey-haired man with a handlebar moustache stopped the golf cart he was driving , turned to me and yelled, “Who the hell is Brant Bjork?” I told him he was a musician and the man then explained that Bjork was his own surname before driving off again. Anna soon had to be at the conference and I always love checking out record and thrift stores so my plan for the day was to head into the the Gaslamp District of San Diego, as well as some other nearby neighbourhoods:
The Gaslamp Quarter is a district of San Diego, California. It is a 16½ block historical neighborhood in Downtown San Diego, and is the site of several entertainment and night life venues, as well as scheduled events and festivals, including Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp, Street Scene Music Festival, Taste of Gaslamp and ShamROCK, a St. Patrick’s Day event. Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres is located one block away in downtown San Diego’s East Village.
The Gaslamp Quarter extends from Broadway to Harbor Drive, and from 4th to 6th Avenue, covering 16½ blocks. It includes 94 historic buildings, most of which were constructed in the Victorian Era, and are still in use with active tenants including restaurants, shops and nightclubs.
“Gaslamp District” is the more commonly used name of the neighborhood by local San Diegans, while “Gaslamp Quarter”, despite being on the entryway arch and all official city signage and banners, is rarely used by locals. The use of “Gaslamp District” is so pervasive by locals that it has become a shibboleth to determine who is a local San Diegan and who is a tourist.
I called an Uber to go into town and as I made my way through the lobby of the resort and approached the pick up area, who else was there on arrival but the man with the handlebar moustache, this time waiting with a fellow employee. “Hey!” he shouted. “Show this guy your shirt!” I humoured him by showing them both my Brant Bjork shirt again, adorned with a giant, red marijuana leaf, and they both laughed, shook their heads, and walked away. My Uber arrived and for a fee of US$35.00 plus more than half an hour of my time I was finally in town and it wasn’t really what I expected. The Gaslamp District had what looked like some cool places to eat and drink, but not a whole lot of shops I wanted to look at. Of course, going out in the evening would mean adding close to US$100.00 to our night out once you include after-hours fees to a ride in a taxi or Uber back to where we were staying, plus we don’t know how dodgy the Gaslamp District is after hours. The shops I wanted to see were deep in the East Village, and my guess is that none of the characters in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (above, right), ever once set foot into the East Village of San Diego:
In the latter part of the 20th century the East Village became known for its vacant buildings, dive-bars, and eclectic dwellings of artists. Prostitutes, drug addicts, and homeless people were common. Beginning with redevelopment, and particularly after the opening of Petco Park in 2004, the area became known for upscale restaurants and trendy shops, although it is still rife with homeless.
I first visited the record store I had intended to and then there were a couple of thrift stores a 20-minute walk away. I figured after paying that much to get here I might as well check out what I’d come to see so I kept walking deeper and deeper into the Village. Sure, the area had become a bit gentrified, as tends to happen often with the shittier areas of cities, but the homelessness was still rife, countless transients everywhere pushing all of their possessions around in old shopping carts. At one stage I thought an African-American guy was walking toward me, resplendent in his tattered rags and a trolley full of trash, but it turned out to be a white guy who was so dirty and grimy that his skin and hair gave him the appearance of being from a completely different race. I had several guys mutter what drugs they could sell me as they walked past and before long I was at the thrift stores. These stores were large, but not quite what I was expecting — There wasn’t a whole lot of goods for people like me that love stumbling across vintage crap, but instead catering to what appeared to be their main demographic, the countless vagrants in the area that were just trying to stay warm at night on the street. The other option for the classier of the homeless community was another nearby Ross outlet a block away.
It was now late afternoon and I had returned to the Gaslamp District and was just exploring the area, browsing in some of the shops and looking at possible options for if we did choose to spend a night out in the city, when Anna messaged me to tell me about the dinner plans back at the resort. I jumped in a cab so I could get back and have a shower and my driver turned out to be this fascinating Moroccan-born data analyst from Finnland who gets bored at work and drives for Uber to improve his already fluent English. We got stuck in traffic for a bit so our ride back to Rancho Bernardo took longer, but we had a really interesting chat on the way, a trip that cost over US$40.00. When I arrived home Anna was giving a talk so I freshened up and later went to dinner with Anna, Rosa, and their crew. The food was an American-international buffet, but the busiest station was true Americana, a build-your-own burger bar. After dinner it was back to the bar for a couple of drinks with Rosa and company. Take a look around Rancho Bernardo Inn, some stuff I found in town, and Anna having dinner with some international colleagues:
We were staying upstairs in that building
Now going back to the lobby
Still going…
…and going…
…getting warmer
This place is enormous!
Looking back at the entrance
Probably the most American canine-based publication I’ve encountered
Mario Lopez is huge in this town
Now having dinner with some of Anna’s international fellows
Thursday, February 20, 2020 Anna didn’t have anything on in the afternoon so we decided to check out some shopping malls, however, they were still about 30km (18.5 miles) away. The valet brought over our dope-odoriferous car, smiled as he handed us the keys, and it was time to hit the road. We soon came to another outlet mall and although she wanted to do some shopping, there is another thing that Anna surprisingly has a soft spot for whenever she’s in the US, one that I would never have expected — In-n-Out Burger. Despite the fact that we had just had lunch, we pulled up a seat in the old-school burger joint from the Happy Days era, and had a burger each before going to the shops. We spent a bit of time looking around, but there wasn’t a whole lot there, although I did manage to pick up a nice tie to wear to the dinner the next night.
Anna was going to have work drinks with her colleagues so I showered and went down to the hotel bar, which was showing the NCAA basketball. I pulled up a seat at the bar next to an older gentleman and we both took in a great game between Oregon and Arizona State, fortunately for us with it on mute and some music playing, otherwise we would’ve got stuck listening to Bill Walton talking about composting or his time hanging out with the Grateful Dead, anything but the game. I got talking to the guy next to me, an ex-Marine who had lived briefly in Broome, Western Australia before retiring in Florida, and then recently moving to the Rancho Bernardo neighbourhood. He said he moved to San Diego because his main hobby is sailing, but ultimately regrets it due to the cost of living and how spread out the area is. In fact, he was drinking in the hotel bar because it was the only one even remotely near his house. The old guy left after the game was over and Anna joined me in the bar for more shuffleboard to finish off the night.
Friday, February 21, 2020 The big day was here, Anna’s welcome dinner for the Macula Society would be later that night, but first after she gave a presentation and chaired a panel I would join them at one of their lunches. Might as well just pull up a seat and grab a bite to eat while they all talk shop. One of the Irish doctors in attendance had just been for a swim in the ocean, because it was about 25°C (77°F) and she told me it pretty much never gets that hot back in Dublin. After lunch we had a look around Fashion Valley mall, although there wasn’t a whole lot for me to look at, however, Anna took advantage of the situation and stocked up on miniature bottles of hand sanitiser, something that has been a little tough to come across for hospital staff in Singapore since the coronavirus outbreak. She bought 40 bottles to be precise. I just picked up an awesome pair of Andre the Giant socks and before long we were headed back to Rancho Bernardo again.
They had a really good band playing at the dinner, everyone one was standing around having more drinks, and Anna and I were catching up with fellows of hers from around the world that we hadn’t seen in quite a while. Soon we were seated, speeches were being made while several people felt the need to passive-aggressively hit their champagne glasses repeatedly with a spoon at the slightest hint of noise, and then after the main course, the highlight of the night for us took place:
youtube
Moments like this make me extremely proud, especially, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, Anna was one of only three women inducted this year and is now possibly the youngest member of the Macular Society. It’s just a shame she didn’t get to keep that saxophone. The rest of the dinner was spent doing more mingling and catching up, interspersed with Anna being congratulated and being asked to be in photos. When the band wrapped up and the dinner came to a close, the older doctors and professors went back to their rooms, while some of the younger ones went down to the bar for more drinks and some drunken, novice attempts at shuffleboard with the uninitiated. The barman had seen Anna and myself every night since we had been at Rancho Bernardo Inn and asked what the occasion was when I went to the bar to get Anna a drink. I told him about Anna’s achievement and he soon returned to present her with a celebratory cupcake, the perfect way to cap off an awesome night. Saturday, February 22, 2020 Our last day in California was upon us so we checked out of Rancho Bernardo Inn, got in our stinky car, and headed for Los Angeles, stopping off in Ladera Ranch to visit Anna’s uncle and auntie, Bob and Susan, the latter of whom is suffering from a degenerative neurological condition, so they were glad they had a chance to see us while the opportunity was still there.
After the visit we were back in the general direction of Los Angeles. I mentioned the first time we came to LA how bad the traffic is, but what I didn’t mention is how difficult it is to navigate the closer you get to the city, a good example being this image to the left. That may appear confusing at first glance, but it is even more difficult in the dark using Google Maps and let’s not ignore the fact that there are many of these types of junctions. Sure, the traffic jams of endless SUVs make it relatively slow, but if you look closer you’ll notice in that image that in some areas there are four or more layers of traffic and in others you can be on a road following the same route directly above or below another road, making it impossible to figure out which path you are following on Google Maps. Add to this exits splitting into multiple exits, other exits barely metres after the previous exit, and if you miss the one you require, you may need to rapidly cross six lanes of traffic to counter your mistake by taking another exit, this time on the other side of the freeway. But there is no other option, the city is so sprawling with pretty much only taxis for public transport so you either have to drive or get driven.
We had given ourselves plenty of time to get to LAX so we had a couple of hours to spare before we needed to be there. We decided that we should get something to eat as the food in the airport lounge would probably be kind of ordinary, plus Anna knows that my favourite record store in the entire world, Amoeba Records, is on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood so that’s where we’d be stopping, we just forgot how awful that part of town is. It’s strange how revered and lauded Hollywood is, Sunset Blvd. in particular in music and film, the place where dreams are realised, but that is only for a small few. In reality it appears to be where all hopes are dashed. Our plan was to park in the lot out the front of the Jack in the Box across the street from Amoeba, but there was the small issue of the two violently alcoholic bums that would be directly in front of a car full of our belongings, one of whom could barely stand and the other who was screaming and threatening to glass him with a half-empty wine bottle. I made the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comparison the first time we were in LA, but it is impressive how accurately they managed to encapsulate this city, the only main differences are that in reality the traffic is worse and the streets are dirtier, but why would you want blocked roads in a game that involves endless driving? Anyway, we contemplated the situation for a good couple of minutes, figured it wasn’t worth the risk, especially when there was a little tent city on the same block containing more people who would probably be more than willing to cash in on the items inside the multiple suitcases in our car. It turned out that there was a multi-storey parking lot with guards just around the corner so we dropped off the car and went to Amoeba. I won’t bore you with the details of me shopping, I could’ve spent all day there and picked up some great stuff, it was just fortunate that we hadn’t gone the day before, because Ozzy Osbourne had done an in-store signing there. Don’t get me wrong, I love Black Sabbath, but it would’ve made looking around a tad difficult, where as now I could embrace it. Time was soon running out so we went to a Japanese restaurant around the corner for some dinner, then it was back in the car and on our way to the the airport. Our last day in California:
Anna with her auntie
Me with her uncle
“Parking there might not be that bad…”
Although this guy threatened to cut a dude out the front
“Hollywood is like Picasso’s bathroom.” ― Candice Bergen
It was worth the traffic and lack of public safety just to visit this place again
Took this the day after Ozzy was there
After dinner we were in the car for the final time. Google Maps was trying to get us to go back on the freeway in a huge arcing loop of endless traffic that would most likely result in us taking multiple wrong exits in order to get to the airport, when there was also another more direct route through back streets that would take essentially the same amount of time. Obviously we opted for the second option and got to the airport completely hassle-free with time to spare. We dropped the Hyundai off at the Avis lot at LAX, hoping we didn’t smell like pot after a day of sitting in that thing, and then had to take a shuttle to get to our terminal, the driver supposed to tell us when we arrived. Only she didn’t, she drove straight past it without us knowing and about half an hour later we were back at the Avis lot. The driver told us she had forgotten that we were stopping there, but wouldn’t forget this time so after close to an hour on the shuttle we were finally ready to check in, leaving us in the usual mad rush that we always seem to end up in, despite initially arriving at the airport with plenty of time remaining. I hate airports at the best of the times, but the ones in the US are among the worst, all patrolled by security staff not smart enough to pass the police exam, but still with the cop mentality. When we had our boarding passes we went through security and the first point was the sniffer dog phase, despite the fact that we were leaving the country and would be arriving in one with some of the strictest drug laws in the world. One security guard at the back was telling the line not to stop, just forcing us to keep moving, yet the guard at the end near the dogs was telling everyone to stop moving forward and back up, causing a bit of a squishy situation in the middle of the queue. Then it was on to the metal detectors, where you have to remove boots, but not shoes. One man in the line who clearly didn’t understand English just saw people taking their boots off so he decided to do the same with his sneakers. “Sir! SIR!” the security guard shouted into the crowd angrily, but the man had no idea it was him being yelled at, he was just doing what almost everyone else was doing. The guard approached him and continued shouting, but the man had no idea what was going on, he just put his shoes in the tray, and went through the metal detector while the guard rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath. After a quick stop in the lounge and changing into some cooler clothes, we were seated and on our way home.
This was an awesome trip, we absolutely loved Mexico and had a complete blast there and yes, we may have spent our time in a more tourist-friendly area, but when we returned, people in both the US and Singapore couldn’t believe we weren’t attacked or killed, but to be honest I felt a lot safer in Mexico than I have any time on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood! It would’ve also been cool to see a bit more of San Diego and get some photos around the town, if we go again we’ll try to stay in the city, but it was all worth it to see Anna get welcomed into the Macula Society.
The second part of our recent trip, arriving in San Diego from a vacation in Mexico so Anna could be welcomed into the Macula Society, before trying to navigate freeways in Los Angeles. We left off in my previous post having spent a few days hanging out in the beachside city of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico before crossing back over the border into the US.

Review: Delta Air Lines CRJ-900 First Class
After flying from Miami to Toronto on American Airlines, we spent one night in Toronto. We just stayed at the Sheraton Gateway Toronto Airport, which I’ve reviewed before, so won’t be writing about again this time.
We met my dad in Toronto, and then the following morning flew from Toronto to New York. Why? Because I had booked us Air France first class fares (like I said, this trip is really special), and originating in Toronto meant that the tickets were several thousand dollars cheaper than originating in New York. I’ll talk more about the details of what we booked in the installment about our Air France flight.
Since this was all a surprise trip for my dad, suffice to say that he was mighty confused when he found out we were flying to New York. He figured we would be taking a long haul segment from Toronto, rather than returning to the US. I’ll have more on my dad’s take on all of this in a future installment.
Anyway, our flight from Toronto to New York was departing just before 10AM, so we ended up leaving the hotel at around 7:45AM. It was just a short walk to check-in.
Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 3
Since this whole thing was a surprise trip for my dad, I had him stand back a bit during check-in, and explained to the agent that this was a surprise trip for him. So she gave me all his boarding passes. Then I handed him his boarding pass to New York, and not any connecting boarding passes beyond that.
Toronto has a US Pre-Clearance facility. Ford and I both have Global Entry, and were through immigration within about 15 minutes (note that when departing Canada you need to have your Global Entry card as well, or else they won’t let you use that line). My dad doesn’t have Global Entry, and it took him over an hour to get through security and immigration.
Ford and I waited in the American Admirals Club for our flight, which is my preferred lounge in this part of the terminal, given that it’s usually quiet. While we weren’t flying American, we accessed this on account of my Admirals Club membership, which comes with the Citi Executive AAdvantage Card. We used the time in the lounge to get some work done before the flight, so that we could spend more time with my dad later in the day when things got really fun.
Our boarding passes indicated boarding would start at 9:03AM, a full 55 minutes before departure. That seemed crazy for a regional jet, so I suspect that’s just the standard boarding time they post for any international flight.
We headed to gate A6E around that time. Boarding started at 9:20AM, starting with first class.

Delta 5322 Toronto (YYZ) – New York (JFK) Wednesday, August 28 Depart: 9:58AM Arrive: 11:43AM Duration: 1hr45min Aircraft: CRJ-900 Seat: 3D (First Class)
Our CRJ-900 was parked out on the apron, so it was a short walk to get there.
Delta CRJ-900
Delta CRJ-900
While I far prefer the Embraer 170/175 to the CRJ-700/900, these planes are still pretty nice for short hops. They have a great ratio of first class seats to economy. There were a total of 12 first class seats, spread across four rows in a 1-2 configuration.
Delta CRJ-900 first class cabin
If you’re traveling with someone then grabbing a pair of seats on the right side is ideal.
Delta first class seats CRJ-900

Meanwhile if you’re traveling alone, it sure is nice to be able to get a solo seat.

Delta has Comfort+ on these planes, so even in economy it’s not too uncomfortable.
Delta CRJ-900 cabin
There’s no bulkhead between first class and economy, so the aisle seat on the left side in economy has almost unlimited legroom (though also expect to get hit by everyone’s luggage as they walk back to their seats).
Delta first class seats
I assigned us the three seats in row three — we put Ford in the single seat on the left, while my dad and I sat to the right.
Delta first class seats
By the way, maybe my memory is just off, but I was expecting I would have to gate check my bag. Instead all of our carry-ons actually fit into the overhead bins on the right side. Are CRJ-900s just getting bigger overhead bins, or is my memory off?
Delta first class cabin
Anyway, legroom in seat 3D was quite good, and much like on Delta’s mainline planes, there were four separate pouches in the seatback.

The tray table extended from the right armrest, and could be folded over in half.

I love that Delta’s CRJ-900s have power ports. While American also has comfortable first class on most of their larger regional jets, few of them have power ports, so that’s appreciated.
Delta first class power outlets
Delta’s regional jet service is largely similar to their mainline service. There was bottled water at every seat, along with a pillow and blanket.

Usually there’s not much you can say about service on a short regional jet flight, but the first class flight attendant, Holly, was incredible. She memorized everyone’s name in the cabin, and addressed people by name with every interaction.
Like, it’s nice enough when they try to address you by name while looking at a sheet, but memorizing names is on a whole different level.
She offered us pre-departure drinks of choice — I had a coffee.
Delta first class pre-departure drink
At 9:50AM the door closed, at which point Holly made her welcome onboard announcement, informing us of our flight time of one hour. I know most of the announcements they read are scripted, but I really do like Delta’s announcements more than those of just about any other US airline.
“We look forward to having the opportunity to provide you exceptional service on our flight to New York.” And provide us exceptional service on our one hour flight she did…
A minute later the crew performed the safety demonstration. The flight was more or less full — there were a handful of empty seats in economy.
We started our pushback at around 9:55AM, and five minutes later started our taxi. While our taxi as such was quick, there was quite a queue for takeoff. We ended up taking off at around 10:20AM on runway 24R.
Taking off from Toronto

It was much nicer outside than the prior day, and there were great views on the climb out.

As we passed through 10,000 feet I powered up my computer and connected to the Gogo wifi. The CRJ-900 has Gogo’s slower wifi, but for a short regional jet flight it’s still sufficient. There are also some streaming entertainment options.
Delta wifi pricing
About 10 minutes after takeoff Holly came through the cabin to serve everyone drinks. I just had a glass of water, while my dad had a black coffee. Again, she addressed everyone by name.

She then came around with a snack basket, which had a variety of options available.

About halfway through the flight I visited the lavatory. There was a lavatory at the front of the cabin, though it was really tight.

At 11AM the captain announced that we’d be landing in about 25 minutes. Shortly thereafter the seatbelt sign was turned on. The weather wasn’t exactly great in New York, and sure enough we touched down at 11:25AM.

From there we had a five minute taxi to our arrival gate at Terminal 4, which was B47.
As we deplaned, Holly thanked each passenger, by name, for flying with Delta.
Delta CRJ-900 first class bottom line
In general first class on regional jets is fairly comfortable nowadays, as I quite like the 1-2 configuration. I find there’s usually not too much variation in terms of the hard product, though Delta is ahead of the curve with installing power ports on these planes. I also like that they have bottled water, along with pillows and blankets, at every seat.
What really stood out about this flight was our exceptional flight attendant, who provided the best service I’ve ever had on a regional jet.
