Genesic Archive Book: Suzaku Kururugi

Profile 1 - A young boy who arrived from Japan and now serves in the Britannian Military. In order to eliminate conflict from the world, he serves as the Device of the Knightmare Frame "Lancelot," which has the power to change the Empire from within, unluckily thwarting Zero's ambitions.

Profile 2 - He has a twisted belief that results obtained through wrong means are worthless. When he was accused of murdering the 3rd Prince Clovis, he was rescued by Zero and invited to join his group but refused, following his own belief. He went to the court martial on his own two feet.

Profile 3 - He is the son of Genbu Kururugi, a Japanese general who advocated all-out resistance against the Holy Brittanian Empire, and murdered his father in his single-minded desire to stop the war. He still suffers from guilt and remorse that the incident was covered up and that his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Profile 4 - The aircraft is the seventh generation Knightmare Frame "Lancelot". By using a large amount of Sakuradite, it has achieved mobility that far surpasses conventional aircraft. It is equipped with a VARIS and a Maser Vibration Sword. It is difficult to pull off due to its high performance. Only a limited number of people can operate it.

Profile 5 - He can cook normally, but his favorite dish is Nikujaga (a meat & potatoes dish) which he learned from his aunt Mafuyu. He doesn't have many likes or dislikes except for green peppers since he can't come up with a use for them. He was always jealous of her for that.

The 2nd Rolo in the series of monthly pictures called Small and relaxed Code Geass Life! This one is called: "Being considerate"

Here was the 1st Rolo we got, last year, which showed him under the rain. All of the pictures this year seem to match the ones which were released during 2023, and just like 2023's rainy day Rolo was followed by a rainy day Lelouch a few months ago, this month's Rolo is offering the bottle of water to last September's tired Lelouch. And I might as well also include the translations for the remaining Lost Stories monthly lines here, since Rolo thinks about giving Lelouch something to drink in one of these too:

July (both regular and dying Rolo): "Lately, the temperature and humidity have raised quite a lot. It's important to stay hydrated in order to avoid suffering summer fatigue." Why does this murder weapon know about the importance of staying hydrated... July (sailor Rolo only): "Lately, the temperature and humidity have raised quite a lot. I'll bring some sports drink for Brother so he won't get heatstroke." Tanabata (7th July - any Rolo): "A wish... As a student of Ashford Academy, perhaps "for the Academy to stay peaceful"... or something like that... Since regular!Rolo was added in July last year, the 1st of these was already available then, but I failed to record it. For now, I think I have posted every month-specific (and date-specific, like Tanabata, Halloween, etc.) line, including those which have a variation when you choose sailor!Rolo. There have been no dying!Rolo variations so far (and oddly enough he gets the same lines as regular!Rolo despite sailor!Rolo being the one who is more attached to Lelouch).

I am a generally anti-AI person, but in the use of fan translations, especially in the cases of menu systems in RPGs, I am wondering what your stance/what the conversation around using AI tools in fan translations are. Additionally, I'm incredibly hype for Naruto RPG 2!!! And I hope Code Geass progress is going well. I played and beat all that was translated from the old translation. Hey, it's been a while!

Well, first I feel that I should preface this by saying that these are just my (Phantom's) thoughts, so may not be representative of the team as a whole. Personally, I've never used generative AI such as ChatGPT for translation, but I have used machine translators like Google Translate/DeepL, and I think they can be useful tools. They can produce results at great speed, and give ideas about words/synonyms to use. The problem is, I believe, when someone tries to use the raw output with little to no editing.

Machine translators are *usually* more reliable with nouns/short phrases (such as those you'd find in a menu), over sentences and paragraphs, but even then, they can still get confused. To take an example from Code Geass, if a machine translator were to be believed, the game-original characters Castor and Pollux (named after the mythological figures), would be called Caster and Parax. As an experiment, I also asked Gemini (Google's AI assistant), which took it one step further, 'correcting' the Japanese input I gave it パラックス - parakkusu to パララックス - pararakkusu, meaning parallax, which is interesting. Unlike a human translator, AI/machine translators don't know if what you gave them is "correct", and can't pick up on whether information is missing (as can be the case when dumping scripts from a game).

So, I guess my TL;DR is machine and AI translators can be a useful and convenient aid, but they can't and shouldn't be used to replace humans. (Or used as an excuse to pay human translators less for "reviewing" machine translated text, for that matter.)

Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion Sound Episode Newtype Special // Canon and Not Canon

This Sound drama is a special sound episode which came out with the July 2007 issue of Newtype, in between Stage 23 and Stage 24 of Code Geass season 1 (For those who didn't knew, There was a 2 month pause in between Stage 23 and Stage 24 and 25, that's why those last two episode have a different opening, made specially for them.)

So there are 5 tracks in this special sound episode, but most are really crack~ish given they break the 4th wall, leading even the characters to meet their voice actors and being mostly happening as a radio show; The first one is canon though, as it happens within the show timeline and recall an important thematic within Code Geass.

Robber Don’t move!!

Boss Everyone get down, hands above your heads.

Robber Got it, Boss.

Lelouch “Maybe I could contact the Black Knights. I’m sure there was an armed unit in the D7 Area but, it will be a reckless move.”

Suzaku Stop it! Let that girl go!

Kallen Suzaku…?

Lelouch “That idiot-!”

Suzaku I’ll be your hostage! That girl’s not well.

Kallen Ye- Yeah… Suzaku… When did you sneak in behind him?

Suzaku Lelouch drew his attention away so it was simple. Can you stand?

Kallen Than-

A gunshot is heard.

Boss I ordered you not to move.

Lelouch Oh? You’re pretty fast. You’re returned earlier than I had calculated.

Boss Shut up! Don’t you see I’m holding a rifle?

Suzaku Surrender. If you do it now, your punishment can still be lightened.

Kallen Suzaku, it won’t get through to him.

Suzaku Don’t worry. Leave it to me.

Suzaku starts walking towards the boss.

Now, throw away your gun!

Boss Stop right there!

Suzaku It’s no use to do that.

Boss Looks like you won’t understand if there aren’t any deaths. Take this!

The boss shoots but Suzaku dodges and rushes in at high speed.

Kallen He dodged the bullet!

Suzaku knocks down the boss.

Suzaku I am Suzaku Kururugi, a Warrant Officer of the Britannia. I hereby restrain you for robbery and attempted murder.

Boss This… This can’t be happening…

Suzaku I’m not afraid of guns when there are no hostages.

Lelouch Hmph. The third reason is Suzaku Kururugi is right here.

Sirens are heard.

Kallen Ummm… Thanks for saving me.

Suzaku You did well. I can’t believe you spoke back to the robbers…

Lelouch Even though you’re just a weak young lady.

Kallen Huh? Oh, I was just… Er, that is…

Suzaku Kallen, are you alright?

Lelouch We should be asking if you’re alright. It was too reckless of you going up against people with guns.

Suzaku You too, Lelouch… Bluffing like that was too dangerous. If I hadn’t sneaked in, what were you going to do?

Kallen Huh? You two didn’t have it all planned?

Track 2 – Code Geass YamaYama of the Rebellion Deluxe Special

The two Seiyuus behind Lelouch and Rivalz, Jun Fukuyama and Noriaki Sugiyama are taking part in this special in a recording room. Just as they are making fun of there own characters, Lelouch breaks into the recording room. He is not happy about them ruining his image. The two Seiyuus don’t know who he is until they learn he used his left eye. Lelouch uses his Geass, ordering them to go reflect on their “sin” and takes over the show to redeem his image.

Lelouch calls in Rivalz who looks over at the two “sinners” and admires Sugiyama who plays his role. On the other hand, he doesn’t think too much of Fukuyama.

Lelouch:“Rivalz, hurry up and sit down over here.”

Rivalz:“Ah right.”

Sits down and gets hit by Lelouch.

Rivalz:“Hey! What did you do that for?”

Lelouch:“I don’t know why but… I suddenly got really annoyed.”

Rivalz:“What is wrong with you?”

Lelouch:“Hurry up and put us on air.”

Rivalz:“Why me?”

Lelouch:“I don’t know how to operate a radio show.”

The show begins.

Track 3 – Code Geass YamaYama of the Rebellion Deluxe Special

And so, the “YamaYama” show begins.

Lelouch:“Wait! What is this “YamaYama”? I don’t understand the reason behind it.”

Rivalz:“Well you see, I think they’re putting the “Yama” in Fukuyama and Sugiyama’s names together to come up with “YamaYama”.

Lelouch:“Then we must change the title. We don’t have the characters “Yama” in either of our names.”

Rivalz:“Then what shall we do with it?”

Lelouch:“Hmmm, yes. We both have a “ru” in our names, the “ru” in Lelouch and the “ru” in your name “Karudemondo” so we’ll call it the “Rebellion of Lulu”.

Rivalz:“Ugh… You don’t have any taste in naming do you?”

The two goes onto introducing themselves and then starts reading out a fan letter that begins with “To the one named Yama”. Lelouch interrupts because he finds the addressing strange. Rivalz explains it’s just a pen name and continues. The letter asks about how to keep a room clean. Rivalz passes the question over to Lelouch since his room is so clean.

Lelouch:“Ah yes, if I have any litter I clean it out immediately. After using anything, I put them back in place otherwise I don’t feel right.”

Rivalz:“So your room is always super clean and tidy?”

Lelouch:“No, my room hasn’t been like that lately really.”

Rivalz:“Huh? Why?”

Lelouch:“There’s a messysomeonein my room.”

Rivalz:“Who? Nunnally?”

Lelouch:“No, not Nunnally. This someone messes around with my textbooks, uses stuff without my permission then leaves them lying around. Thanks to this someone I just can’t clean up my room anymore. And, this someone gives me the look as if I should be the one doing the tidying up afterwards! Just thinking about it annoys me…!”

Rivalz talks about a ghost in Area 11 but Lelouch says the someone isn’t as fun as that. The “someone” is just destitute. Just then the phone rings.

Rivalz:“Hey, a call.”

Lelouch picks up his phone.

Lelouch:“It’s me.”

Rivalz:“Hey, we’re in the middle of a programme here you know…”

Lelouch:“C.C.?! You were listening?!”

Rivalz:“Looks like we’ve just had an accident on our live show!”

Lelouch:“Silence! What’s wrong with telling them the truth!”

He hangs up. Rivalz try to ask who it was but Lelouch ignores it and decides to move on.

Track 4 – Ashford Academy, The Boys Changing Room

Lelouch and Rivalz goes into a corner of the school where students can shout out their secrets and anything that annoys them into a locker. Lelouch thinks it would be a good idea to hide a listening device to gather information. Rivalz stops him.

After releasing all his woes into the locker which including how he doesn’t want to join an event with primary school kids again or be called the “leader of justice”, Lelouch wants to take the locker home. But once again Rivalz stops him because it belongs to everyone. Just then, Lelouch’s phone rings again.

Lelouch:“You’re annoying me.”

Rivalz:“Oooo, sounds like a girl’s voice!”

Lelouch:“The shouts have nothing to do with me!”

Rivalz:“Getting pretty emotional aren’t we?”

Lelouch:“Shut up! Go eat your pizza or something!”

He hangs up. Rivalz teases him about picking up the phone all the time during work. Lelouch tells him the call demands that they stop their stupid shouting activity. Rivalz isn’t happy to hear that and is annoyed at the girl who called. He starts pretending to be having a conversation with the “mystery” girl.

Rivalz:“So, why do you have such a rebellious personality? Oh, because you’re a friend of Lelouch’s huh! Ah, I seeeeee now!”

Phone rings but it’s an e-mail for Rivalz.

Rivalz:“Hey, a message for me! Lets see… I will make Rivalz pay for insulting me… What the-!!”

The show ends and Rivals and Lelouch reminds fans that they can listen to the Code Geass YamaYama DX show every Saturday from 2:30AM on Bunka Radio or Kansai Radio, JOQR.

・Rolo: I will (protect) Brother! Kallen: The one from that time at Babel Tower? ・V.V.: You were a failed product, you know? Rolo: I'm not a tool! I really like seeing Rolo defending himself before V.V.. For a 63 year old, V.V. sure doesn't have many intelligent things to say other than throwing the same insult over and over:

V.V.: Rolo was a failed product. For his life to be shortened whenever he uses his Geass... "defective" is putting it mildly. Well, guess he can be used for assassinations at least. Is it that Rolo's life was shortened each time he used his Geass, or that each time he used his Geass for too long he could die? Because, if it's the latter, then provided that he was careful, arguably using his Geass didn't affect his health long term, but if it's the former, Lelouch sure didn't mind making Rolo have to sacrifice his life span for trivial things like protecting him from girls during Turn 12... Opinion time: Even though I want to believe that Lelouch wouldn't actually knowingly allow Rolo to shorten his life span, as I'm convinced that he cared about Rolo during all that time he told himself that he hated him, I wish Rolo acknowledged that it was very cruel of Lelouch to manipulate his emotions, and that Rolo's only reference to how Lelouch hurt him wasn't just a vague 'Brother used me' (which is always quickly followed by 'but he made me human' so that the audience doesn't have to think much about how Lelouch did wrong). His Home or Trust lines in Lost Stories would have been the perfect place for Rolo to show us more of his point of view, but instead, as I complained last time, he sounds a little too repetitive with the 'Brother made me human' and 'I will protect Brother' lines. In the anime, because there's no time for more, proportionately Rolo gets much more focus, as in a few minutes he: -Rescues Lelouch against Lelouch's demands -Monologues out loud despite having no listeners -When Lelouch wants to know 'Why did you save me?', he makes Lelouch have to change that lamenting tone and join him in pretending that everything is okay by giving Lelouch an answer that Lelouch didn't expect Rolo is the one in control during those scenes, while Lelouch temporarily becomes a "secondary" (passive) character. And because we don't see what he was thinking between Lelouch yelling at him and him deciding to save Lelouch, it's possible to interpret that Rolo *was* in fact hurt and resentful that Lelouch never even attempted to give him (<-a child who had only known abuse throughout his life) that future he promised, and that Rolo giving up his life to save him was, partially, his own way of forcing Lelouch to always remember him (plus he also called Lelouch a liar, which, even though at first glance he only does to protect Lelouch from feeling guilt, could also be an accusation Rolo wanted to make and get off his chest). Lost Stories even depicted Rolo still asking Lelouch to keep his promise around Turn 16, but then we see Turn19!Rolo's thoughts and there's no hint of shock or anger after Lelouch reveals he was manipulating Rolo from the start? I think that is too selfless to the point where it becomes lack of self-respect... Well, back to the video: ・Rolo: I won't let them kill (Brother)! No matter what! Lelouch: Please stop! Do you want to die? Battle interaction between Turn5!Shirley and regular!Rolo (not Turn19!Rolo): ・Shirley: Hey, do you know where Lulu is? Rolo: You are going around wearing that...? ?! Why would someone like Rolo care what she wears... How does he even have a concept of what kind of clothing is appropriate or not?! Love his formal Japanese though. Ok! Notes from the first Orange panel at AX 2024! They were discouraging photography and video so this will just be text (mobile Tumblr hates my photos, anyway). But first, a bit of a TL;DR.

TL:DR: While they talked about Trigun: Stampede, Beastars, and their new upcoming title Leviathan, they mostly focused on Leviathan since Stampede has its own panel later. (I'm not sure about Beastars since I haven't been following the show as closely.)

Studio Orange Presents: Beastars, Trigun, and...

The panel guests were Kiyotaka Waki (producer at Orange) and Yoshihiro Watanabe (producer at Orange and also played translator for Waki), as well as Justin Leach (producer for Eden and Star Wars: Visions).

They started off the panel by noting that exactly zero of the people on the panel (including the mod) slept the previous night.

Then they showed a sizzle reel in honor of Orange's 20th anniversary, highlighting all the stuff they've done in that time. There were a lot of cheers for Trigun, Beastars, and Land of the Lustrous in particular.

After the reel, they talked briefly about the history of Orange, how they'd gone from animating mecha for other people's shows (like they did for Evangelion and Code: Geass) to doing entire properties themselves. They're particularly proud of how their studio has grown from 4 people to... I forgot how many. Much more than 4. And they can now work on multiple titles simultaneously.

On to Trigun! They didn't get into it much since it's getting its own panel at the con, but they did show some pages from the Trigun Bible on Plants, and Watanabe noted he'd post them up on the bird app later today. (Edit: You can find them here.) Watanabe also said they can't release the whole Bible yet, which may just have me thinking hopefully, but hey, there's a chance! He seems to genuinely love sharing pages from it, at least.

On to Beastars! They read a thank you letter from the director to the fans, and also showed a subtitled video that I'd guess was also a thank you from someone else, but I was too far back to read the subtitles. (An ongoing problem with watching anything subbed at this con is the subs being entirely blocked by other people's heads unless you're in like the first few rows... but I digress.) They also showed a new key visual (which I'm sure is gonna be floating around social media somewhere at this point) and noted the third and final season of the show will air on Netflix in December. Waki noted he started reading the manga in 2017, and he's thrilled to get to work on a full adaptation of the story since it's rare to get to do that.

On to Leviathan! I'm gonna break this one up a bit because it's long. This is Studio Orange's new upcoming title in collaboration with Netflix and Qubic Pictures (the studio that did Eden, which was a great story overall and I definitely recommend it). They also worked extensively with the author of the original work, Scott Westerfield, who helped keep them consistent with the characters and themes.

The story is a dieselpunk alternate world WWI story about a runaway Austrian Prince named Alec who meets this Scottish girl, Sharp, on a bioengineered airship, and the relationships these people from disparate backgrounds have with others and each other.

The German/Austrian side of the conflict is a faction known as the "Clankers," who focus on mechs and technology to conquer the world via machines, while the faction Sharp belongs to is called the "Darwinists," who focus on DNA modification of creatures as a way to connect with nature.

They showed a preview of it that honestly looked really cool, but again, no recording. It had flying whale ships. Like... whales they strapped a box to and fly around on.

Orange is excited to get to "go back to their roots" with this and work on a Mecha title again, especially since this title will be theirs this time.

They acquired/absorbed (I'm not sure on the details) a team that specializes in background art for this project, and yeah, the backgrounds are detailed and amazing.

They noted a lot of animators reflect their own lives in their work, and they feel Leviathan is no exception. The international collaboration (they also have people from Europe working on this) lends itself well to a story about people from disparate cultures coming together and realizing they have more in common and more similar passions and desires than they have differences.

They'll be talking more about Leviathan at Otakon in August.
