could u elaborate on "parrots make bad pets"? not disagreeing (far from it) just interested to see your take! looking to learn more about this
(i've gotten this ask before so please don't mind i'm just gonna paste a writeup i did a while ago)
There’s a blog run by an animal behaviourist who specializes in parrots that i really enjoy reading, she has a very good writeup on the state of companion parrots as an industry: The Inconvenient Truth About Cockatoos
so basically the average person usually cannot meet the needs of a parrot, especially medium and ESPECIALLY large species. they are long lived, extremely social and intelligent animals who are very demanding if you are their only companion. in my mind the most 'ethical' pet parrot setup is having some pairs of budgies in a dedicated bird room filled with foraging enrichment and doing some basic command training as a bird-human bonding activity instead of cuddles.
most pet parrots are hand reared or even hatched in incubators by breeders and are never given a chance to be raised by their parents, and virtually none stay with their parents until a natural weaning age before getting sold. which is wild considering it is fucking ILLEGAL to do that to puppies or kittens.
A parrot isn't really born wired for human companionship in the same way that a dog or cat is. they imprint on their parents which sets the blueprint of their kin, and they generally want to only form extremely close bonds with others of their kin. To get a very people-oriented parrot, it has to think it’s people.
This is different from the socializing practiced in raising cats and dogs or acclimating ferals to people. socializing means exposure to things so that the animal doesn't grow up to see the target as a threat, and ultimately that the target is something that can be very rewarding to spend time around. A dog raised with its mother and socialized to people still understands that it's a dog, it can get along with other dogs, but can also form strong bonds to people. They actually read both dog and human body language and legitimately have an awareness that we are different species.
The companion parrot is raised to think it’s people, and as a result many lose the ability to form bonds with their own kind. in fact the reason many breeders remove eggs or chicks from the nest is arguing that the parent birds don’t really know how to raise their chicks- because they themselves were hand reared and never learned how to parent from their parents! it seems that, like us, parenting isn't perfectly hardwired in parrots and they need to learn the skill from their families, oftentimes even staying to help their parents raise younger siblings!
That's why it's not at all uncommon for pair bonded breeding birds to be sold as a completely separate product from companion birds in many aviary operations. there's so many ads for people selling breeding parrots that fucking hate humans or are semi tame specifically listed for sale as breeders not as pets:
then their babies are bred for the pet market so they are taken either before or right after hatching to get hand reared and imprinted onto humans, because a parrot-bonded parrot just won't be as interested in forming those close human companionships you see in viral videos. this isn't the case for all aviaries, i want to acknowledge there are smaller scale breeders who have tamer breeding birds, but big producers can have borderline feral pairs and the point i'm trying to make is when you socialize a parrot to either the human world or parrot world, it's often at the expense of the other.
most trouble starts once the parrot begins reaching the age of sexual maturity. they stop being openly cuddly to most people, and will try to pair bond with their primary caretaker. It's not uncommon for this to lead to aggression towards other family members because parrots don't share partners, they can even do this to babies they are jealous of!
But a human can't become a suitable mate substitute for a parrot, and some of their mating behaviours such as regurgitating on you can seem straight up gross so the human then shuns the parrot and shuts down their advances. this can make your bird become very sexually frustrated that can lead to more unwanted behaviours and even health emergencies such as prolapse. we lead them on by stroking their chest and backs (only something bonded pairs do, you are essentially jerking off your parrot when you do this..) then reject them with no other outlet for their natural urges, and spaying/neutering isn't an option either! so they're stuck in a psychological purgatory of being unable to fulfill their instincts. and if they're in an understimulating environment and left alone for most of the day in addition to all that, frankly i think that's just an awful life to give to an animal we allegedly love!
we essentially alienate them, and when they don’t have people around to meet their extremely high social needs because you work a 9-5, even if there are other birds around, the lonely or frustrated human-bonded parrot can become depressed and self mutilate.
parrots that were left with their parents, are raised as parrots, and weaned at their own natural pace overwhelmingly do not exhibit these destructive behaviours.
a productive relationship with a pet parrot is one that fosters independence, not dependence, on the human companion. the most responsible parrot owners should strive to act more as a zookeeper to their parrot instead of cuddling it and creating a ‘velcro’ bird glued to the hip, and socialize with them via training sessions instead of letting their birds indulge in pair bonding behaviours like petting and preening which leads to sexual frustration and aggression or self mutilation.
Ultimately I believe any parrot hand reared and imprinted onto humans is some degree of psychologically damaged and suffers from the parrot equivalent of a developmental trauma, they have been robbed of a normal parrot life and it cannot be undone.
SO many parrot rescues are completely flooded with unwanted pets, many with tough behavioural challenges (for example it's not uncommon for parrots to be reactive to an entire gender, so that cuts the adopter pool immediately in half). and these patterns can be difficult to break especially without the aid of a behaviourist. and the thing still has another 40 years of life left in it but nobody wants to adopt because it's another "crazy bitey bird that hates everyone", has reached sexual maturity so it's no longer as friendly, and it's much easier to start from scratch so folks choose to just buy another baby and keep the cycle going.
And none of that even touches on the rampant poaching that keeps supplying the trade in many parts of the world. and that's why everyone should have domestic chickens or pigeons.

Tropical Birds Burst to Life in the Intricate Paper Cutouts of ‘The Parrot Project’
by Kate Mothes - Colossal, December 18, 2024
The Paper Ark, a collaboration between Nayan Shrimali and Venus Bird (previously), celebrates the diverse beauty of our planet’s wildlife. In The Parrot Project, a new series of intricate paper-cut pieces, the striking creatures take center stage in vivid color.
“This series focuses on the vibrant beauty of parrots and their contribution to the ecosystem,” say the Ahmedabad, India-based artists, who created 40 different species during the course of one year. Each piece is meticulously hand-cut and painted, realistically depicting the feathered beings.
The Paper Ark’s collection captures the vibrancy of myriad tropical avian varieties, from the bright blue, yellow, and red of the macaw to the dramatic flash of color in the red-tailed black cockatoo.
“We want our audience to not just appreciate the beauty of this wonderful species but also understand its importance in nature,” the pair says. Ten percent of proceeds from sales of this series will be donated to a parrot conservation organization.
See more on The Paper Ark’s website and Behance, and follow updates on Instagram.

Saturday 23rd November 2024
Hughenden, Qld, not to be confused with the Tudor pile in Buckinghamshire once inhabited by Benjamin Disraelie, former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Ireland, is a small town, population 1,113, built on the banks of the Flinders River in Flinders Shire. Originally home to the Jirandali people's for 11,000 years when it was known as Mokana. The Americans had a munitions dump in Torrens Creek not far from here in WW2. That was before they realised or knew of the dangers of bush fires. Inevitably, there was one which they thought they had put out. They all dashed back to camp for doughnuts, and the whole thing went up again, causing 12 huge explosions and craters 20 feet deep. I guess that unearthed a few fossils! This, after all, is also home to Hughie, the seven metre tall skeletal Muttaburrasaurus. Strangely enough, it's not just the Americans who have had difficulties in the fire department. Walking along the High St yesterday, shop after shop and most hotels, have all burnt down at one time or another, or indeed in synchrony. It's the dry timber in which they are constructed and kitchens, apparently. They almost seem to demonstrate a pride in these events, like keeping some form of morbid score! Oh, ours has burnt down more times than yours!
It was a nice thought as we planned our day to take a leisurely stroll along the Flinders River bank. What could be more pleasant on a hot day to feel the breeze across the water. That presupposes that there is water in the river. In our case, tidy as it was with a flat dried mud basin with no supermarket trollies or rusty bicycles poking through, the river was bone dry with tinder dry parched grassy banks. We perambulated, however, as though it was flowing as it shall undoubtedly do in a few weeks' time. Before we reached the empty road bridge, there was a causeway bravely striking a direct footpath across the riverbed, normally obscured in the wet season. Tempted across this thoroughfare to the far bank we continued on along a footpath, which led us to one of the defining features of this town, the coolabah tree. This had a barrier placed around it to isolate it whilst its health improves, because this isn't any coolabah tree, this is the one that both William Landsborough in 1862 and Frederick Walker in 1861 carved their mark whilst searching for Burke and Wills. Yep, still lost.
This certainly is a very tidy town, with many instances of street art. Even the public conveniences are painted with murals, making a sharp contrast with the personalised graffiti often seen on UK public toilets. Wide streets abound, so wide it can be quite confusing as to where you are expected to drive. And these are very quiet roads with so little traffic. You wonder if they were planning for an expansion of the town that never happened and is still unlikely to occur. Shaded verandahed shops in the high street are for sale or rental. Shops such as butchers and bakers. This is not a good sign, and yet building plots are for sale wedged between prefabricated homes.
It was something of a lazy afternoon reading and resting in the sunshine before nipping out for some Coopers Pale Ale from the drive-through BottleO which we unashamedly consumed whilst the parakeets, butcher birds and cockatoos screeched their way through sunset.
Busy day tomorrow; it's off to the lakes. Just got to finish a bottle of SB tonight and watch a film.
ps. This town even has a Bowling Club
pps. With the dark skies, we've been trying to identify the Southern Cross constellation, and we think we've spotted it. Firstly, it is very odd not to see the Plough. Secondly, the Cross doesn't stand out so well, especially on a dark sky, because there are too many other stars visible.
ppps. We can easily spot Orion with his belt.

PARROT OVERVIEW
PARROT FOR SALE
Parrots are a diverse group of birds known for their intelligence, vibrant plumage, and ability to mimic sounds and human speech. They belong to the order Psittaciformes, which includes more than 393 species.
Here are some general characteristics and information about parrots:
1. Size and Appearance: Parrots come in various sizes, ranging from small species like the Budgerigar (parakeet) to large ones like the Hyacinth Macaw. They have strong, curved beaks, zygodactyl feet (two toes facing forward and two toes facing backward), and a short, hooked upper beak. Their plumage displays a wide array of colors, including vibrant greens, blues, reds, yellows, and more.
2. Intelligence and Mimicry: Parrots are renowned for their high level of intelligence. They have complex problem-solving abilities, keen observational skills, and the capacity to learn and mimic sounds, including human speech. Some species, such as the African Grey Parrot, are particularly known for their exceptional language and cognitive abilities.
3. Natural Habitat: Parrots are found in various regions around the world, primarily in tropical and subtropical areas. They inhabit diverse habitats, including rainforests, savannas, woodlands, and deserts. Parrots are native to regions such as Central and South America, Australia, Africa, and Asia.
4. Diet: Parrots have a varied diet consisting of fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, flowers, and in some cases, nectar and pollen. Some parrot species also supplement their diet with insects, larvae, or small vertebrates. In captivity, it’s important to offer a balanced diet that includes high-quality pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional treats.
5. Lifespan: The lifespan of parrots varies greatly depending on the species. Smaller parrots, like Budgerigars, may live around 5 to 10 years, while larger species, such as Macaws and Cockatoos, can live for several decades. Some parrots, like the African Grey Parrot, have been known to live beyond 50 years with proper care.
6. Social Behavior: Parrots are highly social creatures that thrive on social interaction and companionship. In the wild, they often form flocks and engage in complex social behaviors. In captivity, it is important to provide parrots with ample socialization, mental stimulation, and opportunities for social interaction with their human caretakers.

Greetings! Since I've last updated this space I have returned to my hometown. The boiling point was that the house I was living in had signs of being cased. Most people who I shared some of the incidents with thought that this wasn't normal. Including the landlord's mum. Unfortunately the landlord themselves didn't think it was a big deal. They cried and whinged about how it's money out of their pockets (to upgrade security) and that it will be a 'some day' task.
There was a very unnerving incident in mid March last year which made me think I could be getting into danger if stayed any longer. So by the end of April I was gone. It seems like fate in way. Towards June my dad became more ill than usual and was in and out of the hospital for the rest of the year. My brother is my dad's primary carer and it became a too big of job to do alone. So I've been helping out my family. I won't lie, I had been feeling down for the rest of 2024.
Instead of working on my art career I spent the rest of the year distracting myself with video games. I began working on my backlog of games. Thankfully I am at a better place with everything now. In future I see myself only buying games when I actually want to play it. It's more expensive (and stressful) for me to buy a bunch of games on sale and have them waste around compared to buying one thing full price and really savouring it.
Now that it's 2025 and I am back on track emotionally I want to do an updated room tour! This is the current environment that I am creating art in:
My Xie Lian wall scroll makes a return near my door nearby I have my bookshelf and a drawer.
I haven't thought about what to put in this drawer yet. But since we are on the topic. This could be a great space to store vitamins yeah? Next I'd like to share is how I am storing things:
I am using the space under the bed to store things I don't really need on a daily basis. I bought console boxes to store the old consoles. It took many months of shopping around to find the right boxes in decent condition with my preferred budget. I am proud that I accomplished this.
I bought some drawer dividers and instantly the space was so much organised! I keep my art tablet pen in there whenever I am not using it.
Finally the square shelves made it with me to my hometown. It's actually sitting on top of a desk. I covered it with a cloth. Under the cloth I have a plastic container storing random things. There's also a basket for dirty clothes. In the cubes itself I have more random things. I don't know if you recall the larger shelves I had in my last house but that is now helping my family store things in the store room. Also on top are my rocks/crystals:
My favourite is the one that looks the Van Gogh's Starry Night. I also have a lot of love for the crystal rabbit. The acorn is the newest addition which I bought in my last house. Finally we have my desk:
This is my cozy area! I have a pretty desk mat and a Venti mouse pad. A small Venti figure that my friend gave me keeps me company while I draw. I decided to use a calendar this year! I guess I got the fomo when people I was talking to were telling me about their new calendars. Calendar Club had them on half price after the new year. Probably trying to finish of their stock. I also store my tour box away when I am not using it:
I also decided to display one of my dolls. It's a different doll from the other two in the last house. I still have them. I actually have a total of five dolls and I rotate between storage and display. Yeah that's probably too many dolls. ha ha. It kind of just happened over the last twelve years. That's like a doll every 2.5 years no? Anyways here is Hong Lee:
And that about wraps out my room tour! I hope you have a beautiful February and I'll be out here hyper focusing on art. I shall have more to share with you and send the post off I wanted to share this old picture of a galah and pink cockatoo perched next to each other. What great friends 🌷
