when i was little i was obssessed with The Greatest Showman, and my favorite character was the lady with the beard, because she sang This Is Me and that was my favorite song in the whole wide world back then. guess what i started identifying as 7 years later

Oh I have a dad!Coco imagine. Imagine if baby girl comes in from school saying she’s in love and that she has a boyfriend. I think it would be so cute of Coco’s reaction.

Soft R&B music played while the house filled with the smell of a nice dinner being cooked filled the house. Coco sat on the living room floor, playing with the kids while Y/N cooked in the kitchen with a curious Letty, who decided she wanted to learn how to cook.

Coco side eyed his 7 year old baby girl, Y/D/N who played quietly away from her many brothers and sisters. He scooted to her slowly anxious about what could come out of the conversation he was about to start.

“You alright?” He asked her, pulling one of her curls down before letting it spring back into place.

His heart melted when his little girl looked up at him with her big round eyes. “Daddy am I pretty?” Coco knew what that question meant. She had a crush and was hoping she was pretty enough for him to like her back.

His heart pounded as he looked at you, who pretended that you paid no attention to the situation. “I think your beautiful mija. From your hair to your toes.” He replied eith a smile on his face. She returned the smile, showing off her missing two front teeth. Her mood instantly changed, as she crawled over to her siblings to play with them as well.

Y/D/N came skipping into the living room leaving her siblings behind, as she screamed for her daddy. Once she found Coco and you sitting on the couch, she jumped in his lap.

“I’m in love!” She sighed dramatically, her eyes wide in the shape of hearts. Cocos eyes on the other hand, were blown out his head in shock and panic. You on the other hand were already giggling.

“Who’s the lucky boy?” You asked egging her on. As she went into explaining who the boy was and why she loved him so much, cocos eyes and heart widened even more. Eventually Letty walked into the house and laughed as her baby sister explained she has a new boyfriend.

“Cmon, let go make you all pretty to see your boy toy tomorrow.” Letty announced, almost sending coco , who had been sitting there quietly, into shock. They both giggled as they ran upstairs to play in Letty’s makeup.

“You ok papi?” You asked giggling as he laid his head down on your shoulder, groaning. Coco groaned even louder making you loud. “My little girl is growing up so fast.” He cried, emotional over a second grade relationship.

He couldn’t believe his little girl was already in a “relationship.” He cuddled with you closer as he thought about another one of his babies growing up. He almost died when he heard Letty yell downstairs.

“Then you kiss him on the cheek.”

Finished all eight episodes and well, that was underwhelming. Here are my main impressions.

Clothing was too clean and looked like it came out of a cosplayer's closet instead of being actual, lived-in clothes (if there's one thing the failed movie did right, it was the clothes)

Zuko was decent

Sokka had an a+ personality but was missing some nuance

The Sokka and Suki meeting was boring and had typical teen romance cliches galore

Appa and Momo were cute

Not sure how I felt about them starting with 100 years ago, and the cut between that time and the present day was jarring, I feel like the title card should've been there instead to break it up. And just the title card, none of that weirdly glowly, oddly-colored narrative with the bending examples and stuff, it looked so odd

If Katara were a spice, she'd be flour, if she were a book, she'd be two books, where the heck was her fire and spunk and generally just. differentiating traits because I didn't see any and it was so boring to watch her

Like honestly! She didn't have her motherly/parental role thing going on, even in a toned-down way, and she was missing her passion, I just. What else is left

Bumi was scary af man

Lots of the compositing was blurry as shit and it was distracting, probably a lot of newbie, abused comp artists with pay cuts given dneg was working on it

Aang revealing himself all mystically with the intense music, then two seconds later the music stops and he slides down on the ice with a thump made me lol, and I don't think that was the intended reaction

They're in the arctic and you can't see anyone's breath, why is that, tell me

Suki removes her makeup in like 2.4 seconds without missing a single bit of it, teach me your ways gurll

Momo is actually cute and not a demon, praise raava

The fire nation armor is pretty brutal, the shoulder pads are like obvious cardboard that isn't even trying to look like metal (I still can't really tell if it's supposed to be metal? That's not a good thing fam)

Way too much exposition and 'telling, not showing', some of the convos dragged on for wayyy too long

The fox thing was unnecessary, but I liked Yue's added motivation to help Aang as well as her people

What the f did they do to Azula, the foundations of her character are totally different from the og show and she barely even feels like a villain. Some of her lines about being inadequate or 'not good enough' felt really contrived too

Lots of strange cuts and camera work, more than a few times there was a person talking and the camera was looking at their waist or something else for no reason lol, and there wasn't an establishing shot when there needed to be, so things were just disorientating a lot of the time

Lots of things happened but the show just. didn't give any time for them to marinate. Sokka telling Aang he abandoned his people, he knew it, blah blah in one of the early episodes? It's poignant but it lasts like five seconds before the scene totally changes, I got major whiplash, fam

The lion roaring sound effect every time someone firebent, please stop I beg

Azula being defiant was interesting and the lightning scene was cool but I still miss Daddy's Pet Azula

Sokka screaming on Appa was funny

My favourite scene was probably the dude going 'but we're the forty-first!' and Iroh telling them, 'and you're all alive because of his sacrifice'. Like dang that hit hard and I loved it. I liked how they added that

Avatar Roku was like ?? um. I know he and Sozin were goofballs but cmon man

The shots with Koh capturing Sokka and Katara were cheesy as shit especially with the sound effects lmao, it looked like horror movie jumpscares from a b-movie

Some of the acting was hammier than a ham sandwich. Even Zhao gave me that impression at times especially with the dang spirit fish scene

I know they had to condense a crap ton of episodes, but it really felt like the show was just checking off boxes at times instead of (like I said earlier) letting anything marinate

The opening scene with the earthbending and firebending was cool, it's a shame the rest of the show didn't live up to that

The bending vfx looked good. The choreography did feel a bit disconnected though, and not as martial arty as I would've liked

I felt like I could blatantly see some of the reasons the og creators left the show

Grumps tbh I'd give it like 4/10.

Naw but honestly the thesis I could write.

DWJ is a genius at writing people. Like. We all suck. We are not perfect. Some people are selfish, some are vain, some are proud, some are hot-headed and that’s fine- what is not fine is letting it out of control. It’s alright to be proud- just manage it wisely. It’s alright if you’re a hot-head- just know how to not fucking kill anyone on sight.

Honestly it pisses me off (it’s like the toxic Howl TikTok oh my god the things I could SAY)

First off- Howl never told Sophie he was looking to break her curse bc she didn’t tell him? So he had to work on the background to help?

Also people are saying he used her? When he literally changed all of his home and bought HER childhood home, got her a shop and a garden (WHILE NOT HAVING HIS HEART MIND YOU!!!) and people are saying that’s…manipulative? Like when did Howl ask for something in exchange?

Also people saying he flirted with Lettie to get to know about Sophie- uh hello? BOTH OF THEM WERE FLIRTING WITH EACH OTHER TO TALK ABOUT SOPHIE ITS ACTUALLY HILARIOUS?!

Howl is a dick. In the beginning. He goes to (in Sophie’s words) “acost her” aka try and pick her up and get her to go for a drink and when she’s like I’m actually going to see my sister and she starts shaking like a leaf he’s like oh hey want help since you look like you’re actually about to fucking faint and she’s like nOPE THANK YOU and leaves - he could have followed her? He could have literally grabbed her hand and been creepy- but as soon as Sophie is like no he just lets her go? Like? hELLO?!

The beauty of HMC is that you see the characters develop so much. And it doesn’t mean their flaws don’t change.

Howl is still as vain as a peacock but he (probably) won’t make a tantrum about his hair anymore (in CITA when his kid is born he says the baby is ugly just like him lmao WHEN THE FUCK WOULD HOWL FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK SAY THAT?!)

Idk it just- it sucks that nowadays the characters all have to be perfect. Like we are humans- we mess up- we are assholes- it’s literally in our fucking nature. We just need to learn how to balance it out. Howl can keep spending 3 hours in the bathroom doing his hair because he’s vain- he likes looking good! That’s fine!

Aish anyway I’ll shut up before writing anymore.

And honestly the people saying “well from my POV he was toxic and it’s the way I take it” bestie you’re clearly blind cuz where are they coming from? I’m just-I’m flabbergasted that they are trying to pluck things from like- thin air?

And it’s hilarious because they say Howl is toxic meanwhile I remember reading a book in like 9th grade everyone kept talking about and thirsting over the LI when he almost kills the MC twice and has her get like drunk and strip? And like?

I mean you do you but cmon. Let’s be serious here. (Also I haven’t read the rest of the series so maybe the LI changes and hopefully apologizes for whatever the fuck happened in the first book but please if booktok is going to try and cancel fictional men at least get the ones that are actually toxic 💀)

Angel Reyes: He’s fine with eloping, as long as his father and brother can be there too (and Mariol’s ashes RIP). Angel doesn’t really give a fuck, as long as he can end the day with you as his wife. He does, however, wear his kutte when you say your “I do”s. 

Miguel Galindo: He prefers a traditional wedding with a large audience--it’s what’s expected of him. But he knows you want something more private, so you compromise. The two of you get married in secret before having a big reception with the community and all of your family and friends. You objected at first because of the price, but cmon... It’s Miguel. 

Nick Amaro: As long as his daughter is there, Nick is fine with it. His first wedding was such a stressful day, he doesn’t want his marriage to you to start off like that. So he’s perfectly fine with eloping. 

Johnny Tuturro: It takes a little bit of convincing, but once Johnny gets comfortable with the idea of eloping, he’s all for it. His only stipulation is that--no matter where you to end up going--you get married on the beach. 

Rio: Rio loves the idea of eloping. He loves the idea of having you all to himself, of traveling on the low, of not having to deal with relatives and friends and coworkers--he’s prefers to elope than to have a traditional church wedding.

So I do think he realized early on (hello ladies and gents welcome to my Ted Talk I HAVE read this book about 80 times in the past 3 years and I WILL analyze it)

So OK

First of all, like one post a long time ago said; I think Calcifer fell for Sophie first (and he also had a huge role on Howl’s feelings for Sophie, I mean it is his heart after all.)

Howl probably realizes early on that Sophie has a spell on (I think once in the book after they found out about Percival not being a dog he says “this is twice you’ve let me down/not told me something etc” and I think we can assume the first thing was Sophie being under a spell.

We also know he loves teasing Sophie after figuring out she’s not a threat or something the WOTW sent, because this man literally spends the whole book rousing her holy shit.

And I do believe that by the time he shows her the garden he’s fully fallen for her- so it’s between the hair accident (when he starts to at least trust her because it’s when he begins his teasing) and the garden that this big dumbass becomes head over heels for Sophie.

I think he must’ve known what it was, but that he truly didn’t admit it until Sophie was taken by the WOTW that he went “oh alright I am fully in love with this woman. Fuck me.”

As for when he starts falling for her I think he starts like catching fondness of her when he helps her after she nearly had a heart attack (that’s probably when he and Calcifer tried to take the curse off). So by then he knew what kind of spell Sophie had (and probably had his suspicions about her being the “pretty girl” he saw on mayday.)

He also at one point says, when he’s talking about Sophie interrupting his time with Lettie “if I were to court a girl who lived on an iceberg in the middle of an ocean I’m sure sooner or later -probably sooner- I’d look up to find you swooping overhead on a broomstick. In fact by now I’d be disappointed if I didn’t see you.”

By this point I think he definitely likes her in like a cute crush sort of way (I mean cMON he totally wants her to interrupt him) but I don’t think he knows it and like a 7 year old schoolboy he shows it by teasing her. (Yes he is a man-child.) I also think this is when the nicknames start and oH MY GOD am I a sucker for nicknames this guy is getting them feelings lmao.

Now I am a bit conflicted by Miss Angorian.

I mean the book is told from Sophie’s amazingly biased pov so we don’t know what Howl was thinking- but I think he knew Miss Angorian was some sort of…thing sent by the witch.

He does stare at her for a few seconds before beginning the flirty act- and Howl IS smarter than he looks (even if he doesn’t act like it <_<) so I think he does know Lily is some sort of distraction sent by the witch, especially after she places the curse on him. (Also the line “Lily Angorian has a heart like a boiled stone -look I’m quoting this from memory aight- and I think that was him having figured out she’s a fire demon at least.)

That, however, doesn’t stop him from flirting (though I do think he did do it to one, make Sophie jealous and two, figure out more about the witch’s plan. He knew she’d try to get him where he was weak and she believed it was Wales, which is why I think he says when he’s in the wind “I left that deliberately”. He knew what the witch would do which is why he left the opening in Wales and why he kept going over to see Miss Angorian).

aNYWAY I’m rambling so later on he takes Sophie to his mentor (I’m sorry DWJ I cannot write the name iM SORRY) and he brings her solely for the purpose of getting the spell off her (when Michael nudges him and they see Sophie is still her old self he does say like “maybe we should head back home” which makes me think that it was the only reason he had her come. He probably planned to later go to the king because he mentions blacking his name himself or something but after Sophie says no he probably thinks “oh well at least it’ll maybe help me.”)

ALSO THE FREAKING- when he’s all wet and going like Sophie please be the wifey material you are and get me a cup of water please I love you 🥺👉👈 and Sophie is like NO is literally the funniest thing ever and by now he even wants to get pampered by her like I CANNOT WITH HIM 💀

The cold I think is also a really important part.

Iirc someone else also said that the cold was when he began/realized he was falling for her, and I do think it’s a game changer for him because I think he does kind of know at that point ( I mean it’s a cold you get a lot of thinking time during those lmao.) He probably thought something like “I wish she would always take care of me 🥹💕” and then when he could think clearly he was probably like “oh wait what. Oh no. Oh god no. Please nO SOPHIE.”

Then by the time he does the whole garden stuff and such he’s full on flirting. He probably won’t openly admit it but he DOES have feelings and wether he’s flirting automatically and without knowing I have no idea but this man was on a mission to 👏make👏her👏 happy.

Then like I said before by the time Sophie gets taken by the WOTW he’s like “oH GOD I DO LOVE THAT DUMB IDIOT WHY” and that’s why later on he’s all flirty and stuff lol.

Also listen. Listen. Sophie is also head over heels for this man but will not admit it early on.

Anyway yeah thank you for hearing me ramble- in conclusion I think Howl falls early on and admits it to himself from the cold on and openly admits it when Sophie gets taken in by the witch (also someone mentioned he starts wearing the suit a LOT after Sophie mends it and I think that’s just- omg adorable 🥹🥹)

Like the way he does so many things subtly for her- changing the shop name to something simple, bringer her to his mentor to get the curse off, gets her a big field of flowers, a fancy manor that he later cleans up for her, hE EVEN BUYS HER CHILDHOOD HOME! He has fallen so far he’s hit the floor ladies and gentlemen and people of the jury he is in LOVE.

Anyway sorry for the ramble- its 2pm and I’ve just woken up so uh that’s probably why its all over the place lol (I also have not eaten yet which I should but I needed to get it out pfttt) but also I do love speaking about this book and it gives me serotonin so yeah.

When do you think Howl realized/admitted to himself that he’s in love with Sophie? I feel like its earlier than Sophie’s realization on weedkiller day… and when does Calcifer realize?

idk if he admitted it himself too early, he doesn't seem the type to admit things too easily (still, I think he's better about it than our dear Sophie lmao). Realized though - I think he might've realized it much earlier and then have some ~*~denial time~*~ for the rest of the book.

Calcifer is too an interesting thought, he does hold howl's heart quite literally and if we go by the metaphor you could say he also holds his "feelings" (he doesn't get paid enough for this shit does he). He probably knows earlier than Howl. But he's a fire demon™ so he might think about human experiences in general and all of this differently and be like. "The curse must really be affecting him bc this bitch has been having a heart attack for like two weeks now." But then again you could also say this contract with howl has made him more human as well so he might be understanding everything better than anyone else.

As the book is from sophies (biased) pov there are many interpretations about this & it's always fun to have different theories too I think
