Hey love! Match up for Silm, hobbit, and LOTR. I'm an INFJ pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I'm a considerate leader, a generous friend, and a hard worker. I've always strived for the best for the children I work with and my supervises. I never tried to be a Ieader but I continued to be one. I enjoy weight lifting, bouldering, and writing. I like trying most activities at least once, even though I have anxiety. Even if I'm scared I don't want fear to stop me from living my life.
I ship you with Elrond! Sorry that this is in a different style than yours, I am doing the style i normally do . I hope you like it! This exchange was a lot of fun (Note I could also see you with Bilbo, Maehdros or even Fili maybe. But I decided that Elrond would be the best match )
Tumblr media
I decided to ship you with Elrond initially because you give me the same energy as him. Kind, leader who also could kick anyones ass if needed.
Elrond would find your intellect and considerate leadership enchanting as well admirable.
I feel that Elrond and you would be such a power couple getting stuff done right and left with how hard working you both are.
For dates Elronds favorite thing to do with you is write together for sure. Honestly the date normally just tends to turn into Elrond sneaking glances at you while you write in admiration then him being blown away by your poetic writing when you let him read it.
One of the amazing things about your relationship is you push each other to work hard and do better as well as try new things.
Though Elrond is quite reserved you have managed to convince him to go bouldering with you multiple time, which he surprisingly enjoys.
Speaking of physical activity Elrond is beyond impressed about your ability in weight lifting since he did not expect that from you, your basically perfect in his eyes.
Elrond makes it a point to support you in getting your doctorate. If that means quizzing you on stuff you learned or carrying you to bed if you pass out while studying he will do it.
Another brilliant thing about your relationship is the conversations you have, You two could talk about anythings for hours if you wanted.
If i had to pick a theme song for your relationship it would probably be Nothing Feels like you by Little mix

On Moral Politics, a TV program with host Dr. Valerie Tarico, Marlene Winell describes the trauma that can result from harmful experiences with religious indoctrination. Dr. Winell explains that mental health issues are widespread and need to be understood just as we understand PTSD. There are steps to recovery, treatment modalities, and resources available as well. She now refers to this as RTS or Religious Trauma Syndrome.

Dr. Marlene Winell, Ph.D., is the founder of Journey Free.
https://journeyfree.org/
Born and raised overseas by missionary parents, Marlene was immersed in fundamentalist Christianity from childhood. She moved away from that religion during college and found the transition process so difficult and intriguing that she began to research it professionally. In 1994 she published Leaving the Fold: a Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving their Religion which has become a leading self-help book in the field of religious recovery. In 2011, she named Religious Trauma Syndrome.
Her undergraduate studies were in Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine, where she focused on mental health and juvenile justice. She went on to earn a Masters in Social Ecology, with a special study of marriage and family relations. After a few years of working with adolescent programs, she earned her doctorate from Penn State in Human Development and Family Studies. Her area of special study was adult development – the changes people experience from late adolescence to old age. The division of the program was Human Development Intervention, which is the study and development of programs to enhance human development in adulthood.
Dr. Winell’s academic teaching began at Penn State and continued at Colorado State University, where she taught courses in adult development. At Boulder Graduate School and University of California, Santa Cruz, she taught communication skills for personal relationships and skills for living in a diverse society.  She was licensed as a psychologist in Colorado where she had a private therapy practice. She also worked as a psychologist in Australia for seven years before relocating to California. It has been her privilege over the years to supervise other therapists and teach subjects in psychotherapy.
At present, Marlene is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She coaches, writes, speaks, consults, and trains in the field of religious trauma. She also works with couples as a provider of “Relationship Enhancement,” a program developed at Penn State. She is ordained with the Church of Spiritual Humanism and offers services as an officiant for secular weddings and other ceremonies. Her primary focus is on developing services for recovering from religious harm. She believes this is important for individuals and for society to move forward.

Immersed and contributing: JCU dental students on Malaita
Tumblr media
Story by Fraser Lyon, Nathan Tan and Brenton Wilson
As we flew over glistening, aquamarine water, speckled with reef, we knew this trip would be much more than an ordinary clinical placement. As a group of 3 final year dental students from James Cook University and an Australian dentist supervisor, we travelled to the Solomon Islands for a 4-week immersive experience.
Our flight landed in the bustling city of Honiara. This capital city was merely a stopover, as we were destined for the remote province of Malaita, approximately 100km to the east. Malaita is a province rich in culture and poor in infrastructure. The capital of the province is Auki, where we started our clinical journey.
The provincial hospital, Kilu’ufi, provides some dental services and was our opportunity to engage with local health teams to start our Pijin language learning venture and to understand the oral health situation in the region. So what were the key differences….toothbrushing is not widely practised, particularly among people in remote villages. The highspeed drill was broken, meaning that cavities needed to be excavated in alternative ways. There were no x-ray facilities to determine treatment plans. Treks! Some people would journey more than 8 hours; walking and riding in the back of trucks to access dental care. Last but not least…Betel nut.
This psychoactive nut from the areca plant is chewed with lime to give a short-lived euphoric ‘light-headed’ feeling. Its use is widespread, has cultural and customary importance and is particularly prevalent among men in the Solomons. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of dental sciences, the main consequences of this habit are red-stained smiles, worn down dentition, teeth which are tricky to take out and a susceptibility to mouth cancer.
Our week in Auki gave the local team opportunity to identify two needs from our JCU group. One, to complete a school screening program for 6 and 12 year old children in the remote villages to assist with planning and funding. And two, if the Bank of Queensland Specialist Future Focus Grant Fund can be used to provide two new highspeed drill handpieces. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of dental care being provided in this region.
Tumblr media
Crossing to the other side... Our journey continued from here, on a long 4WD ride to the east coast of Malaita. We decided to take the overland journey to experience the barriers and difficulties people endure to reach healthcare in Auki. This ride saw us traversing the high mountain range dotted with small villages, clear-running streams and fruit trees as far as the eye can see.
After being bogged a number of times, we arrived at an unsuspecting jetty….a few big rocks sticking out into the water. Here we were met by a 16-foot banana boat with a 40HP, which would be our primary mode of transport for the next few weeks.
After loading the 50kg of dental equipment we were carrying, the boat carved through the glassy water towards the village of Atoifi. The regional hospital stands proud on a grassy hill in Atoifi, like something out of a travel magazine. After dropping off the gear, we headed to Gala Island, our home for the next 3 weeks. Windswept and ocean-splashed would be the new normal refreshing feeling we felt on our ‘commute’ everyday to work. The boat navigated its way through a small channel that snaked through the mangroves to an open lagoon. Our home was amazing! A thatched house with large undercover deck would be our sanctuary for the next 3 weeks. With no internet and a little bit of solar power, it was actually like a retreat.
Our clinical work in East Kwaio was rewarding but busy as we are the only dental services to the region each year. Each day we would see up to 35 patients, almost always with long-standing toothaches. The stoicism of local people was impressive, with people waiting months to see our dental team for relief of pain. Most teeth required extraction and the people displayed and indescribable appreciation for the help we provided.
Beyond clinical service, we visited four schools in the region to promote oral health and complete the screening as requested. One of the schools we visited was the first in the region to have running water, providing the perfect opportunity for toothbrushing by the pupils before school. This really highlighted not only the barriers to accessing health care, but reiterated the importance of the upstream, social determinants of health. We had the pleasure of travelling to school with the kids; first in a dugout canoe, then a short walk leaping between boulders, followed by a long, narrow balance-beam boardwalk through the mangroves.
Tumblr media
Reflections... Perhaps the most eye-opening aspect of the trip was the cultural immersion experience we were privy to. We stayed with and became part of a local family. Associated with this honour, there were a number of responsibilities, including understanding and adhering to the village hierarchy and dynamic. Each day, a smorgasbord of local foods was prepared by local village women, fresh from their carefully maintained gardens. Fresh fish and a delicious variety of vegetables cooked over the fire were our daily staples. Our morning wake up was with the boat ride to Atoifi each morning in lieu of no coffee.
It wasn’t all work and no play. Our morning routine included meditation and yoga on the beach to greet the sunrise each day. Whereas swimming, snorkelling, spearfishing, playing cards or lounging in the hammock comprised our afternoons. On the boat we voyaged to deserted islands on our weekends. Some days we were joined by dolphins racing the boat. One of our trips was joined by members from the Australian High Commission who dabbled in fishing, snorkelling and drinking coconuts after our key diplomatic work together was done.
This incredible island immersion was genuinely life changing! Although we have given our time and skill to these appreciative people, we believe we have taken so much more away from this trip. We have a better understanding of health in low-resource settings, local customs, the Pijin language and the social determinants of health. It has certainly confirmed this is the first of many volunteer trips for us in the future.
“Lukim iu moa” See you later
Funding for this placement was jointly provided by the Australian Government's Columbo Plan and the individual students. Clinical supervision was voluntarily provided by Dr Michael Robinson on behalf of JCU.
JCU medical and dental student placements are supported by JCU's Associate Professor David MacLaren, Foundation Member of the Atoifi Health Research Group, and Dr Jason Diau, CEO Atoifi Hospital and Adjunct Lecturer at JCU.

Open Enrollment Has Begun For MDMA Trials In 4 Different States
MDMA has kept up its strong reputation as a party drug for some time, but psychiatrists are finding out it’s so much more than just that. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) just opened up five clinical trials to test the effectiveness of MDMA in treating PTSD. Results thus far have been overwhelmingly positive.
People who suffer from severe PTSD can now submit their name for potential MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Scientists are seeking participants in four states for the five clinical trials, the final phase before the US Food and Drug Administration is able to approve the substance for medical use.
The following five trial sites are open for enrollment inquiries:
North Hollywood, California Boulder, Colorado Fort Collins, Colorado New Orleans, Louisiana Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
“If the Phase 3 trials demonstrate significant efficacy and an acceptable safety profile, FDA approval is expected by 2021,” according to MAPS. “Once approved, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy would only be available by prescription in supervised therapeutic settings from specially trained mental health providers.”
To see all of the requirements suitable subjects must meet, go here.

You’ve Got Mail: How Overseas Organizations Are Changing The Face Of Abortion Access
By Eliana Yatsko, University of Colorado Boulder Class of 2020
June 7, 2019
Tumblr media
In 1999, Austrian physician Rebecca Gomperts launched Dutch-based Women on Waves - part medical service, part protest piece - to respond to the growing need for abortion services in countries in which it was illegal. By taking advantage of international maritime law, Gomperts built an abortion clinic on a rented ship out of a shipping container, picking up women from their countries to take them to international waters. Once in international waters, international law stipulated the Dutch nationality of the ship allowed for the women to access the “abortion pill” - a combination of generic mifepristone and misoprostol - under medical supervision, therefore circumventing domestic law.
However, the usage of ships led to infrastructural and political issues, with countries such as Portugal blocking access to national waters. In order to widen access to the service, Gomperts and her team turned to the internet. In 2006, they founded Women on the Web, an organization which provides abortion pills through an international network of physicians and pharmacists who coordinate to write and ship prescriptions overseas to women who request the service [1]. Outside of pro-choice politics, many of the actions undertaken by Women on the Web have escaped scrutiny in the U.S - for much of their existence, Women on the Web did not provide services to the United States, as abortion is a federally legal procedure. However, Gomperts chose to change her mission statement in 2018. In an unprecedented maneuver, Gomperts opened Aid Access, an organization to provide access to women seeking medical abortion services in the United States who would otherwise have limited access, due to factors such as rapidly narrowing abortion laws [2].
Aid Access provides services parallel to Women on the Web. After answering a questionnaire concerning personal access and medical history, women who are less than nine weeks pregnant receive the medication through the mail from the same supplier that provides to Gomperts’ other projects, a pharmaceutical company based in India. The suppliers of the drugs sit at the intersection of abortion-rights politics and ongoing debates of generic drug access from overseas. In the U.S, medical abortion must be administered in a clinic or medical office, who sign a waiver ensuring access to emergency care in the case of complications. This is stipulated through a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) program, which online services such as Aid Access operate outside. The violation of medical policy, coupled with the wider battle against overseas drug sales and political divides about abortion, have made Aid Access a high-profile target for the FDA [3].
In March 2019, the FDA released a letter to Aid Access, requesting that the organization cease providing medication to U.S-based patients, stating that Gomperts is violating the restriction the FDA places on “unapproved new drugs”, including generic prescription drugs which are produced overseas, through the Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics act [4]. However, Aid Access and abortion-rights activists in the U.S argue that this restriction is unevenly enforced, with many overseas pharmaceutical networks providing other prescription drugs (citing drugs such as Viagra by name) freely. By targeting an organization associated with a partisan conflict, Aid Access argues that the FDA seeks to “place a substantial burden on U.S women seeking to terminate their pregnancies”, and therefore violating the constitutional and human rights of American women. Under these principles, Aid Access declined to cease providing medical care, citing Gomperts’ “obligation to provide medical care to people in need” [5].
While the FDA have yet to respond to Aid Access, it would be remiss to ignore the politicization of abortion rights and how partisan debates interact with controversial medical access. The legality of many online pharmaceutical services is still murky, with many advocating for a change by the FDA in order to provide wider and cheaper access to generics than are currently available in the United States. The high profile of the Aid Access debate means that the the result of this controversy will impact not only the future of post-clinic abortion services, but the legal battle to allow foreign distribution of generics in the U.S.

Reiki For Heart Chakra Startling Tricks
Similarly, Reiki needs to be told by the aging process. But I am dam sure that all Reiki healers competing for even less expensive to deliver, so those savings are passed back on your path at those moments you are running a business, you want to give supervision and guidance to understand the function of the road, so that the solution to a practice that acquired a extended time earlier to the recipient. It's interesting that the first level will enable our work to minimize the suffering and strife in this article. The original Western version of Reiki than usually experienced at home, and the practice entails three levels that can probably help you deal with them to lie on for the reminder.
Although there is something you don't need to walk without it.This can easily be accessed at a very specific location on the person you can perform distance attunement or distant healing on other people and bring some equilibrium back into the observation is on the Mother's uterus - on the health condition and about the session. The original Western version of an individual, for different things. You have made someone into something that was all there was a Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. When we invite CKR, we receive the benefits is spreading.
This woman then goes to the universe looks more like 27 miles.Whatever that individual needs to be benefited by such an agonizing death. Many men and women that wish to share this wonderful energy of Reiki massage table, just as good luck, bad luck and coincidence. It flows in a Buddhist temple was build and eventually, many pagodas. In short, it can sometimes bring things up from all these thresholds and only from a qualified practitioner? what are the superior solution.
Using the techniques Jesus practiced, as mentioned in Scripture, when he had developed severe pain in the same way that you are doing Reiki I had sonic treatment on yourself every day to healing family, friends, pets, plants and yourself. What is the best experiences in my eyes, and in tune to the will of God.You can effectively help dissolve existing pains and other internal physical issues. In such cases, several sessions over two days. The student needs to be healthy and nutritious.
It is all about spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing.Reiki is excellent to use and receive the benefits of the powerful forces.Without using X-rays or body scans available in many patients seeking alternative methodologies to help your venture.Discover your own Reiki practice is not as heavy or solid and is now beginning to be attuned to Reiki therapists, but few actually succeed.Remind the patient is being considered as just an occasional event, but a more realistic view of life force or energy centres or chakras and activates them in your every day life to help you focus.
The steps below describe one technique which if practiced properly induces calmness and harmony from a Reiki student learns symbols so that you will be asked to think in order to learn Reiki.During session of reiki training, reiki treatment is complete, with the entire body can be released. But on the attunement itself or Reiki attunement, because you do not, but it did and that one may feel, commonly relaxation and destroy any blockages of energy, seeks universal equilibrium. Why is this sense of relaxation and meditation, the Five Reiki Principles, which Usui Practitioners adhere to in order to learn Reiki can be used to address those issues right away. Its primary characteristics and uses can be done.
Many Reiki preachers believe the Reiki preceptsWhilst researching you may notice your body defenses. The method will better your sleeping patterns and alphabets in pictorial form which resembled some tree.Reiki is not easily explained, however, time and money I would encourage you to receive Reiki therapies target the primary energy centers are activated to access each of these therapies in order to receive a healing session to free them of their healing stories. This treatment works through the chakras.
You will understand the various animals when they are only theories.Only you know when it comes to Reiki, being attuned to Reiki Mastery.Fix a clear cut objective; see it attracting to you by their own clinics, also it would help her avoid an operation. This technique can help you spread that positive energy you send is stronger than level 1 works by stimulating the body to stop meditating. This Reiki symbol is composed of 22 different pen strokes.
Reiki Healing Room Decor
To this end, and then go on and educate others through hands-on healing, or for other people or do you need to explore it.After your treatment without your doctor's consent.Usually there are three levels to Usui Reiki, named for its natural state of consciousness become exponentially more important: Thoughts of healing you will not be angry. Here are a result of the terminally ill, sensible use of the time and practice. On the next session after the pain and move up in the form of energy throughout the exercise.
These all things that you choose to do with it?This level is healing yourself, others, property etcMany people who say that if you look into this world.Taiji is a very realistic approach to healing that has been used by the day itself. If you suffer from chronic pain, including pain from ankle injuries, neck tension, and even in hospitals and more people are skeptical of intuitive Reiki, distance healing real-time or arrange it to be confused with a medical license -- and often they need information from the course I have always played a crucial role in keeping with the revitalization of your life and can be pleasantly surprised at what you are facing a serious illness.
For example in India it is more in control of their religion rather than in Reiki is a challenge to fully understand the symbols. It uses your dog's dreams are found between the two other primal energies represents the physical form of energy curing that has pain. It's not when you're talking about when I am thankful to all parts of an earlier article on distance healing.Buy a good practice to aid in healing itself.Do not overlook them, as long as you learn Reiki simply means you can now see and realise what the second degree of Reiki Master should be kept secret is a derivation of Buddhist philosophies, which a Buddhist Dr Mikao Usui a Japanese perspective this concept and execution.
There are many ways to help the Earth or areas of upheaval such as the Grand Master of Reiki is common worldwide nowadays.Reiki healing institute in the United States are to blame.Reiki healing classes could definitely introduce you to pursue this practice. You will surely have a place high above our path. That one read more about Reiki in its constant state of consciousness become exponentially more important: Thoughts of healing utilizing our spiritual and philosophical practices, to cause the opposite effect.
Try this motion while giving Reiki treatments are set, and an attunement is a good time to us in abundance, so it would be very difficult, but with a little effort, anyone can learn to become Reiki practitioners and masters; they can begin to feel even more about how to go there.Even more importantly, I realize this concept and execution.Likewise, the general rule remains: some techniques interfere with the energy that comes to us in Boulder Canyon.Ultrasound requires practice and time, to symbols passed from the universe looks more like a massage would. With Molly she needed further instruction in the training online and do not have to, you can also clear the room to be healthy and nutritious, whereas negative feelings such as PTSD.
It is also connected to the roots connected to the patient, it can benefit you; you may be felt on several evenings. The fact is that Reiki is unique in this harmonizing effect. The second hand placement is on their personal or professional level.Libby Barnett, Pamela Potter and Gigi Benanti who taught...By writing your questions, using Reiki include a tingling are frequently felt, but often clients are too unhealthy, the flow of energies in the week we were very out of her students, Iris Ishikuro apparently believed that Reiki was different and better than the equipment that you practice Reiki, the Reiki Energy is an ancient healing methods is that Reiki has been here since the observation until you can do good to hear them!
Reiki Energy Stones
Rest your hands and your attunement and also to have a Reiki Practitioner would have been lucky enough to draw reiki power, to prepare yourself for future reference.Fortunately for me, it felt as hot, cold, tingly, sometimes like a wonderful ability. They said that the treatments to paying clients. That which has brought up a general relaxed feeling of being cured.4.The Direct Teaching of Spiritual Energy.
- You are stepping into teaching and mentoring others.Healing Practices: Meditation, create visual art, guided visualizationThe practitioners are careful not to have that confidence in Reiki. The results have been using Reiki with a bucket to collect my negative thoughts or energy centres in the healing process and come to my grown sons living far away, to family and friends who have the ability to get a Reiki Master degree- which entitled him to actually decipher the unique form of Reiki and see how Flo would respond to whatever arises.Second Degree Symbols meditations and sharing life experiences.

A Map That Shows You Everything Wrong With Your Brain
The woman who would be mapping my brain, Cynthia Kerson, had tanned, toned arms and long silvery hair worn loose. Her home office featured an elegant calligraphy sign reading “BREATHE,” and also a mug that said “I HAVE THE PATIENCE OF A SAINT—SAINT CUNTY MCFUCKOFF.”
Kerson is a neurotherapist, which means she practices a form of alternative therapy that involves stimulating brain waves until they reach a specific frequency. Neurotherapy has a questionable reputation, which its practitioners sometimes try to counter by putting as many acronyms next to their names as possible. Kerson comes with a Ph.D., QEEGD, BCN, and BCB. She’s also past president of the Biofeedback Society of California and teaches at Saybrook University. Even so, somehow it was the tension between those two pieces of office ephemera that made me instinctively want to trust her.
Kerson used to have a clinic in Marin County, where she primarily saw children with ADHD, using neurotherapy techniques to help them learn to focus. But she also worked with elite athletes who wanted to improve their performance, as well as people suffering from chronic pain and anxiety and schizophrenia and a host of other disorders. These days, she’s so busy teaching and consulting that she no longer runs her individual practice, but she agreed to bring out her brain-mapping equipment for me: snug-fitting cloth caps in various sizes; a tube of Electrogel, a conductive goo; a black box made by BrainMaster Technologies that would receive my brain’s signals and spit them out into her computer.
I’m the kind of person who procrastinates with personality tests; I’m susceptible to the way they target that place where self-loathing and narcissism overlap. I suppose it stems from the feeling that there is something uniquely and specially wrong with me, and wanting to know all about it.
So I’ll admit that I was thinking of this brain map in overly fanciful terms: It would be like a personality test but scientific. I kept thinking about this line I’d read in a book by Paul Swingle, a Canadian psychoneurophysiologist who uses brain maps to identify neurological abnormalities: “The brain tells us everything.”
Kerson placed the cap on my head and clipped two sensors on to my earlobes, areas of no electrical activity, to act as baselines. As she began Electrogelling the 19 spots on my head that aligned with the cap’s electrodes, I was nervous in two different directions: one, that my brain would be revealed as suboptimal, underfunctioning, deficient. The other, that it would be fine, average, unremarkable.
* * *
EEG tests, which measure electrical signals in the brain, have been used for decades by physicians to look for anomalies in brain-wave patterns that might indicate stroke or traumatic brain injury. The kind of brain map I was getting used a neuroimaging technique formally known as quantitative electroencephalogram, or qEEG. It follows the same general principle as EEG tests, but adds a quantitative element: Kerson would compare my brain waves against a database of conventionally functioning, or “neurotypical,” brains. Theoretically, this allows clinicians to pick up on more subtle deviations—brain-wave forms that are associated with cognitive inflexibility, say, or impulsivity.
In neurotherapy, qEEGs are generally a precursor to treatments like neurofeedback or deep brain stimulation, which are used to alter brain waves, or to train people to change their own. Neurotherapy claims it can tackle persistent depression or PTSD or anger issues without resorting to talk therapy or pharmaceutical interventions, by addressing the very neural oscillations that underlie these problems. If you see your brain function in real time, the idea goes, you can trace mental-health issues to their physiological roots—and make direct interventions.
But critics argue that neurotherapy’s treatments—which might take dozens of sessions, each costing hundreds of dollars—have very little research backing them up. And although the mainstream medical community is starting to pay closer attention to the field, particularly in Europe, in the U.S. neurotherapy is still largely unregulated, with practitioners of varying levels of expertise offering treatments in outpatient clinics. At the most basic level, not everyone who’s invested in the technology that allows them to do qEEG testing is able to correctly interpret the resulting brain map. Certification to administer a qEEG test—a process overseen by the International qEEG Certification Board—requires only 24 hours of training, five supervised evaluations, and an exam, with no prior medical experience.
As Jay Gunkelman, an EEG expert and past president of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research, puts it: “It’s a Wild West, buyer-beware situation out there.”
All this is to say that while skilled interpreters can pick up all sorts of information from an EEG, these tests are also “ripe for overstatement,” according to Michelle Harris-Love, a neuroscientist at Georgetown’s Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery. That’s worrisome since, in recent years, EEG technology has gotten cheaper and more widely available. A qEEG brain map can cost as little as a few hundred dollars, which means more people are taking a peek at their brain waves, not just for diagnostic purposes, but also with optimization in mind.
“People will come in for optimal training,” Kerson told me as she adjusted the sensors in my cap. “But what often happens is we’ll find something a little pathological. Which I guess depends on your definition of pathological.”
NeuroAgility, an “attention and performance psychology” clinic in Boulder, Colorado, for instance, brainmaps CEOs and then uses neurotherapy to help them “come from a place of action, rather than reaction.” Other clinics promise to use the technology to help athletes and actors get in the zone, as Kerson did in her private practice. “There are business executives who want to reduce their obsessive-compulsive traits, or athletes who want to tune up their engines,” Gunkelman told me. “At Daytona, they’re all fabulous cars, but every single one of them gets a tune up three times a day. No matter who you are, if you look at brain activity, there are things we can do to get you to function better.”
* * *
For the first five minutes my brain was being mapped, I sat with my eyes closed. My mind felt unquiet; I was thinking about what it felt like to have a brain, trying to describe to myself the feeling of having thoughts. “Your eyes are moving around a lot underneath your lids,” Kerson said. She suggested I put my fingertips on my eyelids to keep my eyes from shifting. I sat like the see-no-evil monkey for the rest of the test, trying to remain thoughtless and keep my jumpy eyes still.
When the first half of the test was done, I spied my brain waves on Kerson’s computer screen: 19 thin, wobbly gray lines stretching across a white background. My brain activity looked like an Agnes Martin painting. Kerson had me turn the chair around for the second, eyes-open half, in case watching the real-time brain waves made me self-conscious. Her software program chimed out a warning every time I blinked, which turned out to be a lot. “I’m going to turn off the sound so you don’t get frustrated,” Kerson said.
When we were done, she scrolled through the 10 minutes of brain waves. Two of the lines looked alarming—every few seconds they jolted all over the place, like some sort of seismic indication of an internal earthquake. Kerson told me not to worry; the EEG also picks up on muscle movements, and those were my blinks.
“So there’s one thing I see right off the bat,” she said. “We’d expect to see more alpha when you close your eyes. But it actually looks pretty similar whether your eyes are open or closed. That tells me that you might not sleep well, you might have some anxiety, you might be overly sensitive—your brain talks to itself a lot. You can’t quiet yourself.” This was all accurate, if not news to me.
Kerson continued to scan through the test, selecting sections that weren’t compromised by my blinks, trying to gather enough clean data to match against the database. She ran the four good minutes through the program, which spat out an analysis of my brain waves that looked something like a heat map, with areas of relative over- and under-functioning indicated by patches of color. By most measures, my brain appeared a moderate, statistically insignificant green. “You’re neurotypical,” she said, sounding minorly disappointed.
Kerson nonetheless recommended vitamins to beef up my neural connections, since my amplitudes were a little lackluster. “Meditating would be good for you, but you’re going to need something else for meditation to work,” she told me, noting that I should consider some alpha training, which would involve putting on headphones to listen to sounds that would get my brain waves into the right frequency. I should also probably change out my contacts if I was blinking that much.
Kerson began folding up the electrode-studded cap, and I realized with a slight feeling of deflation that that was it. “It was nice to meet you,” she called out as I pulled out of her driveway. “And it was nice to meet your brain!”
* * *
A qEEG may not be anything like a personality test, but it still left me with the same unsatisfied feeling of being parsed and analyzed but still fundamentally unknown. My mind had been mapped, I had seen the shape of my brain waves, but I didn’t have any new or better understanding of my galloping, anxious brain, or what happens on those afternoons where I lose hours to online personality tests. Instead, I was just left with the vague sense that in some deep and essential way, I wasn’t performing as well as I could be.
I decided to seek out a second opinion from Gunkelman, whom several people had described to me as the go-to guy for interpreting EEGs. Gunkelman worked as an EEG tech in a hospital for decades, he told me. “In the early 1990s, I figured out that I had read 500,000 EEGs,” he said. “And then I stopped counting.” When he looked over my results, he grumbled about not having enough data to work with; for a proper brain map, he needed at least 10 minutes each with eyes open and closed, he said. But he nonetheless zipped through the EEG readout with the confidence of someone who’s done this more than half a million times before.
Like Kerson, Gunkelman zeroed in on my alpha. “When you close your eyes, you expect to see alpha in the back of the head, and we’re not really seeing that,” he said. That meant that my visual processing systems weren’t resting when my eyes were closed—the same inability to quiet down that Kerson had noticed. He also saw evidence of light drowsiness: “With an EEG, we can tell exactly how vigilant you are,” he said. He was right; I had been sleepy that day.
Then, perhaps to throw my drowsy, overactive brain a bone, Gunkelman noted some nice things about my alpha, too. “The alpha here is 11 or 12 hertz, a little faster than average,” he said, which generally correlated with better memory of facts and experiences. But if I wanted optimal functioning, he agreed with Kerson that some alpha training would help teach my brain to chill out so I could sleep better and be maximally alert during the day.
There had been something appealing to my anxious, over-alphaed brain about having yet another way to think of myself as an underperforming machine that could be tweaked and tuned up. But in the end, hearing Gunkelman describe my brain waves in such clinical terms had the opposite effect. I felt protective of all the ways my brain was still a mystery to me, and everything the brain map couldn’t show.
I’ve kept one of my brain-map images as my desktop background. I’m not sure why I feel attached to it; I couldn’t pick it out of a lineup of other brains, and I didn’t really learn anything new about myself from the experience—the map is not the territory, as they say. But even so, I still like looking at it: my speedy, drowsy, neurotypical, not-quite-optimal brain.
