29 Jun 2018: Self-driving shops, Amazon buys online pharmacy, Co-op economy, Alexa for hotels, Tesco Go

Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Co-op economy report

The Co-op economy report shows that co-operative economic activity is growing. The standout line: “co-operative start-ups are almost twice as likely to survive their first five years when compared to companies”, probably because it’s easier to align interests when the employees are the owners.

Related: Co-op Group will buy four convenience stores from John Lewis, which is refreshing the JL and Waitrose brands to add “& partners” in order to emphasise employee ownership. Hopefully they’ll reinstate their brilliant JL&p logo from the 1970s.

Self-driving shops

If cars didn’t have drivers or passengers, they wouldn’t need to drive at busy-human speeds, which might make it easier to deploy certain kinds of self-driving car - like Robomart’s “autonomous shops on wheels”. The basic promise: instead of you having to pop to the shops, the shop pops to you. Robomart says that customers will prefer to inspect perishable goods in person, and that looking at shelves that bring themselves to your driveway is easier than tapping away on a grocery app.

But it might be decades before full self-driving autonomy is ubiquitous. Before then you could imagine a temporary stage in which if you want to pick up a loaf of bread and some milk you wait until Freshco’s automated shop comes to you - it might slowly cruise around the neighbourhood, being flagged to a stop by pedestrians. But if you want to order an uncommon product or you want it in a hurry, maybe it’s delivered to you by a human driver, and more expensively. And you might even still be able to pop to the local store!

After that, perhaps transport and shopping merge. You wave away that Gregg’s Steakbake-n-ride Bus because you want something different today, and the queue for the FalaFellers Gondola is always insane. So instead you “step into a Starbucks Van, or a Burger King Coupe, to dine and commute at the same time”.

Amazon buys online pharmacy PillPack

Amazon is buying US online pharmacy startup, PillPack. You can see how PillPack fits with Amazon’s “efficiently sending things” strand, just as the wider Improving Healthcare Services joint venture with Morgan Stanley and Berkshire Hathaway fits their “efficiently running info-rich services” capability.

Employee power and indifferent technology

Big tech employees are criticising their employers for taking contracts with government agencies. Amazon employees demanded it cut ties with ICE, the US immigration and customs enforcement agency, saying “we should not be in the business of supporting those who monitor and oppress marginalized populations”. Salesforce, Google and Microsoft employees are also pushing back on their employers’ gov contracts.

The problem is that the same technology that underpins the friendly, free-and-pay-with-your-behaviour services that users love can often be put to use elsewhere, and in ways that more obviously seem objectionable. Technology isn’t neutral, but it is indifferent to how it’s used.

Alexa for hotels

Amazon announced Alexa for hospitality. Contexts and jobs that have constrained use cases are easier to build a voice assistant for because you can build for a predictable set of requests, and the users already know what kinds of thing they can ask. “What time is breakfast/checkout/breakfast served from?”, “Turn up the heating please”, “Can you send up a cheese sandwich/ironing board?” and so on, but not “Hotel! Can you improve this sales presentation for tomorrow’s important meeting because aaaaaah?” (You can imagine that a shop or an insurance company might have some similarly narrow requests.) Interesting: they plan that hotel guests will be able to sign into their own Amazon accounts, to be able to “call home” etc. And maybe even watch their own Prime Video content?

Tesco Go

Tesco is looking at cashierless/checkoutless shopping - shops in which you can put things in your bag and just walk out. Tescoboss: “In our stores in central London, Manchester and Birmingham, lunchtime queues are a problem. Anything we can do to speed that up will be a benefit for customers.” But Tesco is “still figuring out how it could be introduced at some of its 1,800 UK express stores without increasing theft”.

Amazon’s Go shop in Seattle is a bit further along: “Amazon Go, for the most part, is designed to make the process of "oh, I changed my mind" very visually clean. Shelves are stocked with shape and color variety in mind, and they have rigid item-placement spots. Those factors combine to make it very difficult to put stuff where Amazon doesn't want you to.”

Other news

Ticketmaster was hacked - the fraudulent activity was spotted by the bank Monzo, which acted quickly and has explained itself well. By comparison Ticketmaster and their chat vendor look a bit preoccupied with pointing the finger at each other.

Lots of stories in the last fortnight about companies moving jobs, activity, headquarters etc outside of the UK if the Brexit disast destination is no customs union. Insurance giant AIG is moving to the UK though - it was previously serving its UK customers from Luxembourg.

Slack had a rare service outage - team communications tool/office gossip supercharger was down for three hours, during which co-workers had to fall back to email or nervously clear their throats and use speech. They posted an update every 30 minutes - a good practice.

Elon Musk drawn into farting unicorn dispute with potter. Reasons why this story is being linked: 1. Elon Musk/Tesla. 2. The way that tech firms are sometimes a bit casual about other people’s intellectual property. 3. pottery. 4. the headline.

Hacienda-Style Home

Seeing a home with real character is always a treat – one that actually doesn’t add any extra pounds, which is always a plus, right?!

This beautiful Hacienda-style home was perfectly designed by Heather Scott Home & Design (also featured – and very loved – here). She furnished and decorated this home by reusing a lot of the clients existing furnishings. The designer then covered them in new fabric to match the new and updated color scheme.

Hacienda-Style Home

This elegant living room features a pair of sofas with waterfall skirt facing each other and matching chairs. The large cocktail table is solid mahogany wood with weathered finish.

Pillows on chairs are custom, silvery blue velvet – similar here, here & here.

Coffee Table: Noir.

Paint Color

Paint color is very similar to Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.

Side Chair Details: The designer reupholstered the existing chairs in off-white velvet with Rust patterned fabric on the back.

Elegance meets practicality! The designer used Sunbrella velvet fabric on the chairs. Gorgeous and easy to clean!

Press release: Nearly 200 employers named and shamed for underpaying thousands of minimum wage workers

£1.1 million identified for 9,200 workers underpaid minimum wage rates

179 employers named and fined £1.3 million after underpayment

As well as recovering backpay for 9,200 workers, the government also fined the employers a total of £1.3 million in penalties for breaking national minimum wage laws. The most prolific offending sectors in this round were retailers, hospitality businesses and hairdressers.

It comes ahead of the next rate rise on 1 April, when the National Living Wage will go up from £7.50 to £7.83 per hour. Apprentices under the age of 19 and those in the first year of their apprenticeship will benefit from a record 5.7% rise.

Later this month the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) will launch a campaign to raise awareness of the new rates and encourage workers to speak to their employer if they think they are being underpaid.

Business Minister Andrew Griffiths said:

The world of work is changing and we have set out our plans to give millions of workers enhanced rights to ensure everyone is paid and treated fairly in the workplace.

There are no excuses for short-changing workers. This is an absolute red line for this government and employers who cross it will get caught - not only are they forced to pay back every penny but they are also fined up to 200% of wages owed.

Today’s naming round serves as a sharp reminder to employers to get their house in order ahead of minimum wage rate rises on 1 April.

Bryan Sanderson, Chairman of the Low Pay Commission (LPC), said:

As the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates rise on 1 April, it is vital that workers understand their rights, and employers their obligations.

The Low Pay Commission is pleased to see the government maintaining the momentum of its minimum wage enforcement.

The recent announcement that all workers will have a right to payslips stating the hours they have worked – an idea originally proposed by the LPC – is a positive step.

This 14th naming round comes after the government published its Good Work plan last month, which announced the right to a payslip for all workers. The new law is likely to benefit around 300,000 UK workers who do not currently get a payslip.

For those paid by the hour, payslips will also have to include how many hours the worker is paid for, making pay easier to understand and challenge if it is wrong. The move is part of the government’s Industrial Strategy, the long-term plan to build a Britain fit for the future by helping businesses create better, higher-paying jobs in every part of the UK.

Since 2013 the scheme has identified more than £9 million in back pay for around 67,000 workers, with more than 1,700 employers fined a total of £6.3 million. The government has also committed £25.3 million for minimum wage enforcement in 2017 to 2018.

Employers who pay workers less than the minimum wage not only have to pay back arrears of wages to the worker at current minimum wage rates but also face financial penalties of up to 200% of arrears, capped at £20,000 per worker.

Notice of Underpayment (NoU)

Under this scheme the government will name all employers who have been issued with a NoU unless employers meet one of the exceptional criteria or have arrears of £100 or less. All 179 cases named today (9 March 2018) failed to pay the correct national minimum or living wage rates and owed arrears of more than £100.

Employers have 28 days to appeal against the NoU (this notice sets out the owed wages to be paid by the employer together with the penalty for not complying with minimum wage law). If the employer does not appeal or unsuccessfully appeals against this NoU, BEIS will consider them for naming. The employer then has 14 days to make representations to BEIS outlining whether they meet any of the exceptional criteria:

naming by BEIS carries a risk of personal harm to an individual or their family

there are national security risks associated with naming in this instance

other factors which suggest that it would not be in the public interest to name the employer

Coronavirus round-up: The Hut Group recruits as online demand surges, plus updates from Quiz, Dixons Carphone, the ONS and more

We’re reporting on the effect of the Covid-19 coronavirus on the way UK shoppers buy – and on how retailers are responding to that changing behaviour. This update comes as 9,529 positive cases have been confirmed by Public Health England as of 9am on March 25 and 463 people have died. The Hut Group recruits as online demand surges

The Hut Group (THG) says it is bringing forward more than 500 new jobs across its manufacturing and distribution sites, following a surge in demand for its health, beauty and nutrition products.

It says the increase in demand has given it the confidence to bring forward recruitment plans from later in the year.

About 350 of the jobs will be at its manufacturing and fulfilment centre in Warrington, Cheshire, and the remaining 150 at its sites in Wroclaw, Poland and Kentucky, USA. More jobs could be unveiled should increased demand continue.

Matthew Moulding, founder and chief cxecutive cfficer of THG, said: “Some of the region’s biggest employers have had to make incredibly tough decisions in recent days, leaving a worrying number of people out of work at such a vulnerable time. Our message to those affected is that we will look to do whatever we can to help, and so we are bringing forward our recruitment plans. We are now hiring across our manufacturing and logistics sites with immediate effect. We need you and would be thrilled to provide you with a new opportunity at this incredibly challenging time.”

The group says it is also seeing record demand for its technology and operating platform, where its clients already include Nestle, P&G, Walgreens and Nintendo. Spending up by more than 20% online and at supermarkets: study

Shoppers have spent an extra £361m a week in supermarkets since the Covid-19 outbreak began, a new study suggests. The report, from www.blacktowerfm.com/&source=gmail&ust=1585320230565000&usg=AFQjCNE3WUfjL5-fTiZEn-qZypr2Xp6aRA">Blacktower Financial Management Group finds that each household is spending an extra £13 a week, based on a weekly food bill of £60.60, and adding up to £361.4m altogether across 27.8m households – a rise of 21.4%.

The study also suggests that online sales are up by a quarter (25.5%) as a result of Covid-19.

John Westwood, founder and group managing director at Blacktower, says: “Supermarkets and a range of ecommerce retailers have been overwhelmed by increased purchasing because of panic buying amid the coronavirus outbreak. Central England Co-op introduces screens and cuts opening hours to protect staff

Central England Co-op is introducing screens at tills to protect its staff from Covid-19, while also cutting opening hours to allow for store cleaning and shelf replenishment as well as more time to rest.

The retailer has also brought forward its annual profit share and increased its staff discount.

Central England Co-op chief executive Debbie Robinson said: “Our colleagues and key workers are doing everything they can to ensure our communities continue to be supported during this uncertain time.

“In the spirit of co-operation, we wanted to say thank you by giving them a little something to showcase our gratitude for their hard work and dedication. We also wanted to say welcome to all of our new colleagues who have joined in the past few days."

Quiz visitor numbers fall online and in-store

Fast fashion multichannel retailer says visitors both to its store and its websites have seen a "substantial reduction" since the outbreak of Covid-19 at the beginning of March. It took the decision to close its shops and concessions on Saturday, days before the government ordered non-essential retailers to close.

Previously, its performance had been in line with expectations. But the retailer now says its sales and profit margins for March are now expected to be "materially below the board��s expectations" and that it cannot provide financial guidance for the year to March 2021 at this point.

It says it had net cash of £8.3m as of March 24, and £4 million available in lending �� which it is now looking to renew before they expire on April 23 2020.

"The group is continuing to take steps to preserve cash by eliminating non-essential spend, postponing capital projects, substantially reducing stock intakes and deferring payments wherever possible," Quiz said in today’s trading update.

Intu shopping centres now semi-closed

Intu is in discussions with the Government and says it may look to borrow from its £330m business support scheme. it says that its shopping centres in both the UK and Spain are now semi-closed as only essential stores, such as supermarkets, pharmacies and banks, stay open. It says that it only received 29% of rent due on yesterday’s quarter day, while at the same time last year it had received 77% – threatening its ability to meet its own payments on lending.

The company had cash and lending of £184m available on March 24 and says it expects to get the £95m proceeds of its sale of Intu Puerto Venecia in the middle of May.

Intu says it is cutting back on head office spending to maintain cash, and is reducing its non-essential service charge costs, passing savings on to its retailer customers.

The company said in a Covid-19 update today: "Other Government measures announced of business rates suspension, employee cost support and tax payment deferrals, are also expected to have a positive impact.

"Given the ongoing uncertainty around Covid-19, we are no longer able to provide guidance in relation to the 2020 financial year. In these difficult times we continue to assess all strategic alternatives and will provide further updates as appropriate."

Topps Tiles goes online-only as store staff are furloughed

Topps Tiles is now operating only online and today said it was working to fulfil customers orders "to the extent possible within the constraints of the UK government restrictions".

In the 12 weeks to March 21, retail sales were down by 3.1%, it said in today’s trading update.

Topps aims to protect the business so that it is well-positioned to recover once the situation returns to normal. It has about £20m in cash, with £39m lending full-drawn down – and it expects net debt to stand at about £19m when the half year ends on March 28. Further lending of £11m is currently subject to lender approval.

It says it is using the Government’s job retention scheme to furlough staff who work in stores, and it is taking steps to cut costs, preserve cash and retain flexibility.

Looking to the full-year, Topps Tiles’ board said: "While assessing the outlook with accuracy is impossible, it is clear that the Covid-19 pandemic will result in a material reduction to our expectations for revenue and profit for the second half of the financial year. In these circumstances, the group is withdrawing its financial guidance for FY20 and does not expect to pay an interim dividend this financial year."

Ocado brings robowarehouse to Kroger

Some crunchy grocery news this week. First, Ocado announced a warehouse-and-ecommerce partnership with Kroger in the US. Ocado has two distinct businesses: one, the branded online grocery business in the UK. The other, a horizontal warehouse-logistics-ecommerce platform business that’s gradually picking up deals globally.

Kroger already has a partnership with Instacart, which somewhat overlaps with Ocado in that both get groceries delivered to your home. Instacart’s service is more human-powered, and perhaps lighter and easier to hook into existing retail grocery businesses. Ocado’s platform is a higher investment reinvention play with robot-driven warehouses and so on, and you’d guess is more efficient longer-term. Ocado tends to do territory-exclusive deals for its platform, so it may not mean head-to-head competition between Ocado and Instacart - both companies have done well recently, thanks in part to the wake-up call the Amazon/Whole Foods deal gave to the grocery sector. Ocado’s exclusive deals have also dampened potential conflicts between their vertical online grocery and horizontal platform businesses. But the other interesting question is whether Ocado becomes enough of a horizontal platform business that the retail grocery business in the UK looks optional.

Alibaba and 6m corner shops in China

Next, here’s a sense of Alibaba’s offline ambition - Alibaba to transform China’s mom-and-pop shops In massive offline expansion:

“The retail giant has now unveiled an even more ambitious plan to transform 10,000 mom-and-pop convenience stores across China into a vast network of Tmall.com brick-and-mortar outlets, where consumers can shop, pick up packages, make orders online or even apply for and receive small loans. It’s the first step in Alibaba’s broader plan to turn as many as six million convenience stores into smart service centers equipped with Alibaba’s e-commerce infrastructure and capabilities in financial technology, logistics and travel services. [...] "These Tmall shops will be a supermarket, a post office, a travel agency, or even a community bank," said Lin Xiaohai, vice president of Alibaba.”

Elsewhere in grocery, high streets, retail and payments: Mothercare will close 50 shops. Shoppers desert the high street (link might need registration). Paypal is buying point-of-sales payment solution iZettle.

Cars, cops, bailiffs and data

In the US, car repossessions are up as loan deliquency rises. Car repossession companies use cameras and software to automatically perform number plate checks on nearby cars. The camera systems are provided by companies like Digital Recognition Network which keep and aggregate all of the data (its website boasts 6.5bn vehicle sightings), also reselling it to law enforcement agencies. The creation of surveillance systems that span the private and law enforcement realms sounds a bit uncomfortable from a privacy perspective. In the UK, automatic number plate recognition is only done by police services. And the Highways Agency, Capita, car parks. And maybe Google Maps and… hmm.

In the future, if you don’t pay your car loan, your self-driving car will repossess itself. (Well, you’re more likely to be paying per ride for a car owned by A Tech Company, but let’s imagine it anyway.) It will self-police, taking itself off to Kwikfit to get its tyres replaced after dropping you off at the office. And when it fails the new sensor-driven “continuous MOT test” it will report itself to the nearest DVLA drone and hopefully let you out before it locks down and goes dark.

UnFound platform co-op accelerator

Accelerator programme UnFound announced a shortlist of eight platform co-ops. One of them, Open Food Network, provides “online tools for buying, selling & distributing local food”.

Hello GDPR

GDPR day is this week, 25 May 2018. The Information Commissioner’s Office guide.

One of the disadvantages of leaving the “re-consenting” until the last minute is that users, exhausted by all of the emails about new terms, instead use it as an excuse to unsubscribe/cancel, resulting in very clean but perhaps much smaller consent lists. Three entertaining GDPR efforts: A football club’s pitch-side messaging. A financial consultancy’s ballad of GDPR. A musician planning for the future.

Previously we’ve talked about what happens if personal data in the blockchain’s immutable record meets the GDPR’s right to erasure. The preliminary answer seems to be that regulation wins.

Unsocial media

Facebook has deleted 1.2 billion fake accounts in the last six months, automatically recognising over 80% of spam, nudity and violence but under 40% of hate speech. Twitter is hiding unhealthy and trolling content behind a “show more replies” link. Social media is increasingly about removing noise.

Other news

Amazon has a dozen or so “experience homes” in which you can try out their smart door lock/video doorbell/entertainment/thermostat/etc services - and helpfully suggests that you can say “Alexa, start party time.” Immediately followed by “Alexa, show me the front door.”

Mobile virtual network operator GiffGaff says “We revolutionised the mobile industry and now we want to do the same with personal finance”, and is starting with credit checks.

Unexpected side effects: “Do you think the people who founded GoFundMe understood they were starting a healthcare company?”

Doteveryone’s Society in the Loop newsletter looks great.

Microsoft’s Adaptive Xbox Controller will make gaming more accessible for people with limited mobility.

Two years ago: “How might food/high street retail and cornershops change in future? Perhaps we’ll see more floorspace devoted to local “warehousing” of goods you’ve already bought, and the Co-op would be strongly positioned to explore this further. Shopping that’s little and often, relevant to me, collecting my goods on the way home, closer to me.”

A Coffee Drinker’s Guide To Leeds

Some Yorkshire natives frequently describe the area as “God’s own county,” which suggests they’re not shy of sharing the virtues of this northern English region. Leeds is Yorkshire’s largest city, which may explain the loud and proud approach of many locals when their home is the subject.

That said, the place does have a fair bit to shout about. Formerly an industrial powerhouse built on the milling trade, Leeds has evolved to become the country’s second-largest financial and legal hub, with four universities fueling growth across different sectors.

Previously dubbed “the United Kingdom’s fastest-growing city,” Leeds now blends historic houses of commerce like the 1857 Kirkgate Market—one of the largest in Europe—with designer developments such as Trinity Leeds. But fortunately, it’s not all big brands. Recent years have seen the city’s independent economy thrive, and this is evident in the ever-expanding set of places to pick up a great coffee.

Locals appreciate this daily, whether they’re working on deals, dissertations, or just feel tired from worrying over when Leeds United will finally awake from slumber and win promotion back to the Premier League. But the city’s well worth a stop for tourists too, particularly as its cultural, sporting, and social attractions are a straightforward train trip from London, Edinburgh, Manchester, or York. The list below is by no means exhaustive, but if you feel your energy dipping as you wander across this lively city, it includes some of the best places to grab a brew and recharge.

La Bottega Milanese

A man in an immaculate shirt and tie dispenses drinks and “Ciaos” in perfect synchrony. Customers sip cappuccinos while standing at tiny tables. People in suits breeze past naked lightbulbs and concrete pillars. That instrumental funk you’re imagining? It’s playing.

You might be in Leeds, but the stylish La Bottega Milanese does its best to capture something of the city it’s named after. Espresso comes from two La Marzocco Linea Classic Pros, and the drinks menu proudly wears its Italian heritage, with traditional nods including an affogato and a liqueur-spiked espresso corretto.

The “off-peak” service section offers AeroPress and V60 cups too, and more modern tastes are reflected in the range of non-dairy milk and matcha, beetroot, and turmeric lattes. One of three grinders will presumably always hold La Bottega’s own La Classica blend, but recent guest espresso came courtesy of Darkwoods Coffee, based only 25 miles from Leeds.

If you plan to stop for more than a quick caffeine hit, you might find yourself tempted by the counter of savory and sweet Italian treats. Do chocolate cannoli taste just as good regardless of which country you’re in? There’s only one way to be sure.

North Star Coffee Shop & General Store

Want to escape the city buzz and wander by some water? A 20-minute walk from the central train station, North Star lies just off the River Aire on Leeds Dock. While the company has been roasting coffee since 2013, the cafe opened its doors less than two years ago.

The outside seating might not always be your first choice (Yorkshire isn’t famous for its climate), but the tranquil interior provides an ideal opportunity to relax with a drink. A piccolo with North Star’s Burundi Maruri Natural was the best coffee of my last weekend in Leeds, and the shelves were full of more offerings from Peru, Rwanda, and El Salvador. A La Marzocco Linea PB sits on the light wood counter—there are always two espresso choices—while filter comes from Marco SP9 brewers.

Noisette Bakehouse takes care of the food here: breakfast and lunch plus highly photogenic cakes and pastries. The “General Store” features plenty of coffee equipment next to various food and drink products, and the menu also includes beers from some of Leeds’s superb breweries. One of which—Northern Monk—has a bar that is only a short stroll back up the riverside …

Layne’s Espresso

Something of an early fixture on the Leeds specialty coffee scene, an unmistakable orange front gives way to a clean, minimal space. (Is it possible to say that a venue opened in 2011 has a rather “classic” feel? Maybe in this industry.)

Layne’s baristas serve espresso from a Synesso MVP, with batch and pour-over brews also on the board. London’s Square Mile regularly provides the coffee here, but the V60 was recently loaded with a single-origin Colombian from Round Hill Roastery in southwest England.

Being around the corner from Leeds Station means Layne’s is often busy, but the apparently compact layout benefits from chilled out basement seating. The main service area provides contrasting viewing opportunities: will you choose a window pew and look out on bustling commuters, or turn inwards to see plates proceed from the open kitchen? The food includes brunch comforts such as Turkish eggs and buckwheat pancakes, as well as coffee complements from fellow Leeds business Porterhouse Cake Co.

Given its people-watching potential—and how tough it can be to find good coffee in the United Kingdom after 5pm—it’s worth knowing that Layne’s is open until 7pm weekdays, 6pm weekends.

Temple Coffee & Donuts

Though it sits on an unremarkable lot among garages and petrol stations, this is a popular fuel stop to the west of the city’s financial district. Savvy work on branding and social media is reflected on the premises, where the décor’s as bright as the rainbow of donuts at the counter. If you don’t plan on dunking one of these in your drink, they can be carried away for later in equally fresh pink and green boxes.

Still, it’s not a case of style over substance. Coffee–from East London’s Dark Arts–flows smoothly from a three-group La Marzocco Strada, with batch-brew filter available. Vegan caffeine fiends might appreciate that the swap to oat milk is free, which is not the case in some other city shops. It makes sense here though: all the donuts are vegan, as is the ice cream.

A couple of iced coffee options sit alongside more alternative specials, including the “Purple Haze: lavender steamed milk with floral flavors.” There’s less in the way of coffee equipment for sale, but there is a wall of branded merch should you desire a cafe-related souvenir of your stay in Leeds.

Kapow Coffee

Its renown as a shopping destination means that each weekend crowds hit Leeds in search of glitzy goods. If that all gets too much, you can stop here in the smaller Thornton’s Arcade, and find an oasis of relaxed style and substance.

Kapow’s downstairs area is snug, with a couple of small tables and some window seats. This means customers have the option of chatting with the friendly staff, who knock out espresso on a Kees van der Westen Mirage Duette. Pour-overs are on hand too; a honey-processed Ethiopian from Echelon Coffee Roasters was fresh and floral on my latest stop.

Echelon was one of several Leeds-based coffee brands stocked on that visit. Maude Coffee Roasters—last seen plotting another specialty venue for Leeds, titled Fwd Coffee—was also among the many retail bags in the window. This suggests a laudable commitment to the locality, despite the house espresso being provided by London’s Union Coffee.

Customers who pass the small but well-filled cabinet of goodies—plenty of gluten-free options alongside decadent brownies from Leeds’s Brown & Blond—can enjoy a peaceful hour on two airy additional floors, with artwork dotting the walls throughout.

Opposite Cafe

This unfussy pit-stop between the city centre and the student areas of Hyde Park and Headingley has been around longer than many of the specialty spots in Leeds: a sign informs passers-by that Opposite has been “Smashing out amazing coffee since 2005.”

The Cafe lies—funnily enough—opposite the main campus of the University of Leeds and therefore fuels the toil of students and staff throughout the day. But this isn’t an extension of the library: the easygoing vibe means many tables are free of textbooks, and the helpful baristas are just as accommodating to customers from further afield. Dropping in on a weekday afternoon, I was handed a super-smooth oat milk flat white, and suggestions for other worthy cafes in the city.

Here, Union Coffee is fed into a La Marzocco Linea PB, with batch-brew from the likes of North Star. Tempting homemade cakes are bolstered by strong pastry work from another Yorkshire city; cinnamon buns and more are sent up from Sheffield’s Cawa Bakery. Back in Leeds, Opposite could provide a handy pause on the way to an intimate gig at the Brudenell Social Club, or a film at the beautiful Hyde Park Cinema.

Cielo Coffee House

Though Leeds has certainly improved in the last few years, it’s not always easy to find a quality cup away from more central parts. Happily, this outpost in the eastern area of Garforth has been roasting and pouring coffee for more than a decade, and has retained its upbeat atmosphere.

This might be down to the owners’ commitment to giving their profits to other local organizations, or their volunteer program, which helps young people gain coffee skills that can lead to paid employment.

It would be a shame if the product didn’t match the principles, but thankfully it deserves a mention too. All of Cielo’s coffee is roasted on site, and an April trip to Uganda was planned to build more direct relationships with importers. Espresso is dispensed from a La Marzocco FB80, and the house choice is rotated regularly.

Nearby French bakery Dumouchel supplies excellent pastries, and those wanting a sugar fix might also eye the hot chocolates, often served swaying with cream and chunks of sweet snacks. Cielo is a heartening example of a neighborhood independent that has survived the nationwide deluge of awful-to-average chain coffee.

Seeing a home with real character is always a treat – one that actually doesn’t add any extra pounds, which is always a plus, right?!

Hacienda-Style Home

This elegant living room features a pair of sofas with waterfall skirt facing each other and matching chairs. The large cocktail table is solid mahogany wood with weathered finish.

Pillows on chairs are custom, silvery blue velvet – similar here, here & here.

Coffee Table: Noir.

Paint Color

Paint color is very similar to Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.

Side Chair Details: The designer reupholstered the existing chairs in off-white velvet with Rust patterned fabric on the back.

Rug: Turkish knot Oushak style (aged/washed) rug in ivory – similar here, here & here.

Dining Room

Elegance meets practicality! The designer used Sunbrella velvet fabric on the chairs. Gorgeous and easy to clean!
