Huh.
The best thing about Gettysburg, or at least the thing I miss most now that nobody pays me to go to Gettysburg anymore, is that the Male Loneliness Epidemic simply does not exist there. It is a place where middle aged men go with their friends, or to make new friends. I can see a gaggle of millennial men and know instantly that these guys love their pals almost as much as they love multiracial democracy and the traditionally feminine hobby of historical costuming. Men are out in the fresh air. They are touching so much grass. I once overheard a conversation between two guys buying an antique rifle that was as full of emotional connection as anything I’ve ever heard two men of that age group say.

So the previous exposure my mom had to Psych was her walking in on the fake seance scene and me trying to explain that it's all pretend in the show and I'm getting involved in matters of the occult, and she agreed to give it another shot so now I'm hopping around season 1 trying to find the scenarios and episodes that would most appeal to her and then we'll watch in order from there on out.
#she enjoys it now btw#she laughs out loud multiple times an episode and only does that if she thinks something is *very* funny#we've watched the astronomy one the spelling bee one and the civil war reenactors ones so far#psych

#(not so)happy first time since my grandpas passing in july that I've realized how much i miss him#i was talking to an older man at the art store today about his art and he told me that he and his wife were civil war reenactors#and i thought it was so cool and i had a thought of 'oh man i should tell grandpa about this'#and just got stuck on. I cant#and it was a moment of oh man. theres a lot of wild things my color theory professor talks about that i would have LOVED to tell my grandpa#because he always questioned and wanted to know why someone did something#god it got annoying sometimes but im literally never going to find someone that im going to have that type of conversation with again#something something passage of time#it sucks. im never going to have someone to play chess with like i did with him again#no more music#OH MAN THERE WAS SOMEONE PLAYING A HARMONICA AT THE MARKET TODAY AND I ALMOST LOST IT#i have homework to do but augh crying#cosmo talks

They sent me a picture and a little bio of the plumbing tech that's coming to my house that ends on "[x] enjoys horseback riding in his free time"
I'd show you a picture of the text, because I find it very amusing, but I don't want to dox this guy.
#it's like.... just what kind of services are you offering here#that combined with the 'might be a civil war reenactor' beard makes me want to cry laugh

It's alsoprime time for everyone's favorite game show: gun, fireworks, or garage explosive?
MYTH: Americans set off fireworks on the 4th of July, in honor of our Independence Day
FACT: Americans set off fireworks from approximately June 20th—July 20th, for no reason other than this is the time of year that you can literally buy them at any grocery store
#we used to shoot off the neighbor's cannon for 4th of July#Civil War reenactors have a lot of cool shit when you're little and like to light things on fire#Also like fireworks are ridiculously easy to make and gun/black powder was cheap as hell last time I sourced it

a few years ago, when I first had an excuse to buy and wear 19th century clothes, I bought a really crummy canvas sack coat from a discount Civil War reenactment supplier who I'm fairly sure is no longer in business. I haven't worn it in ages. the build quality is terrible, to such an extent that the seams are straight up not finished correctly and a bunch of cloth frays every time it's worn; I got what I paid for. partly because of this, partly because it kinda doesn't fit me, and partly because it was the fashion in the 1860s to make everything jnco jeans levels of baggy, it also looks awful.
but today it occurred to me that, if I so wished, I could rip the seams to break the coat up into its constituent pieces, recut them using a pattern for a coat that will actually fit me and look nice, and stitch it back together as a learning exercise. so there's another project for the pile! I definitely do not have enough stuff crowding the back burner already
#also to be clear i don't do civil war reenactment; not my thing#civil war reenactor suppliers' civilian sections are just one of the easier ways to get readymade 19th century men's clothing#anyway i know there's patterns out there for mid-1800s paletot coats so i think one of those would be good. i want that nipped in waist#but i dont want to go quite so far as to try and recut it into a frock coat. i don't think there'd be enough material to do that

I'm sure everyone involved in ww2 larping is just a great person. Famously a war without a real bad guy.
You know you've fucked up when you go to a doctor and the thing you have wrong with you has been named after an occupation that isn't a thing anymore. Like imagine a doctor looking at you and going "yeah you've got ox-drawn ploughman's disease. We don't even test for that anymore. Yeah the reason you've never heard of it is because the last known case was in 1927 and happened to some guy who was like 98 years old and didn't believe in modern medicine of the time. What the fuck have you been up to."
#like civil war reenactors#some decent people sure but#very few people choose to cosplay violent racists#without bringing something of their own to that#you know
