The 20's really is the decade of the Irish and I'm so here for it. KNEECAP getting international recognition for their biopic and music, the Dungeons & Dragons movie have a song in the soundtrack completely in Irish, An Cailín Ciúin getting international recognition, Sinners putting Irish trad on the big screen and introducing a whole new community to traditional Irish music, and an influx of foreign Irish Language learned and the past part?
The Irish language is at the forefront of almost all of them, may it last 800 years

An Cailín Ciúin/The Quiet Girl || Directed by Colm Bairéad || 2022
Review in Irish:
‘The Quiet Girl’ scríofa agus stiúrtha ag Colm Bairéad. Leanann cailín ciúin a bhfuil faillí á déanamh aici a chuirtear ar shiúl óna teaghlach mífheidhmiúil chun cónaí lena gaolta ar feadh an tsamhraidh. Bíonn sí faoi bhláth faoina gcúram, ach sa teach seo nach bhfuil rún ar bith ann, faigheann sí amach ceann. Faighimid léargas ar an domhan ó dhearcadh linbh naoi mbliana d'aois le comhbhá ag dul ó gach lámhaigh, gach gluaiseacht beag. Cineamatagrafaíocht iontach. Go héasca ar cheann de na scannáin is fearr de 2022 dom, chomh bródúil as a bheith Éireannach agus tacú leis na scannáin a thagann ónár dtír.

'Cillian Murphy is now the favourite to bag the Oscar for Best Actor after BoyleSports slashed his odds to even money from 6/1.
The Cork-born star of Oppenheimer has been backed gradually as Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller smashes box office records and he has now moved ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio to snag one of the biggest prizes at next year’s Academy Awards.
DiCaprio’s drift to 9/4 from 7/4 in the betting for his role in Killers Of The Flower Moon means he is now second favourite to Murphy.
Martin Scorsese’s western drama is set to hit cinema screens in October, but at 11/4 it trails Oppenheimer at 7/4 in the race for the Best Picture gong...
Dubliner Barry Keoghan is back as an infatuated student in thriller Saltburn and his chances of walking off with the Oscar for Best Actor have already been trimmed into 14/1 from 20/1.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “There could be a green assault on the red carpet again next year with Cillian Murphy now in the box seat for an Oscar and Barry Keoghan is coming into the picture before his new movie has even dropped.”
Meanwhile, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) has announced that Oppenheimer has become the highest grossing film for the IFI — overtaking the Oscar-nominated An Cailín Ciúin.
IFI Cinema Programmer Kevin Coyne said: “The success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the IFI is a tribute to the director’s ability to create mature, thought-provoking films that are best enjoyed and appreciated on the big screen, with an audience of fellow film fans.
“We are particularly pleased to be able to present the work of someone who is such an advocate for the cinema experience on this magnificent 70mm format, as he prefers.”'

118 The ocean blessing
O Thou who pervadest the depths,
Imprint on us Thy gracious blessing,
Carry us over the surface of the sea,
Carry us safely to a haven of peace,
Bless our boatmen and our boat,
Bless our anchors and our oars,
Each stay and halyard and traveller,
Our mainsails to our tall masts
Keep, O King of the elements, in their place
That we may return home in peace;
I myself will sit down at the helm,
It is Lir’s own Son who will give me guidance,
As He gave to Bran mac Febail
What time he set stay to sails.
Boínn, Bríd, Oghma,
Lugh, Nuada, an Mórrígan,
an Dagda of love,
Pour ye down from above the dew
That would make our faith to grow,
Establish ye us in the Rock of rocks,
In every law that love exhibits,
That we may reach the land of glory,
Where peace and love and mercy reign,
All vouchsafed to us through grace;
Never shall the canker worm get near us,
We shall there be safe for ever,
We shall not be in the bonds of death
Though we are of the seed of Caorthann and Fearn.
On the Feast Day of Cónocht an Fómhair, the Feast Day of Samhain,
The Feast Day of Grianstad an Gheimhridh, sun of mercy,
The Feast Day of Bríd, day of my choice,
Cast ye the serpent into the ocean,
So that the sea may swallow her up;
On the Feast Day of Cónocht an Earraigh, day of power,
Reveal to us the storm from the north,
Quell its wrath and blunt its fury,
Lessen its fierceness, kill its cold.
On the Day of Hogmanay on high,
Subdue to us the crest of the waves,
On Lá Bealtaine give us the dew,
On Grianstad an tSamhraidh the gentle wind,
The Day of Lugh the great of fame,
Ward off us the storm from the west;
Each day and night, storm and calm,
Be Thou with us, O Chief of chiefs,
Be Thou Thyself to us a compass-chart,
Be Thine hand on the helm of our rudder,
Thine own hand, Thou God of the elements,
Early and late as is becoming,
Early and late as is becoming.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #6: The Quiet Girl (dir. Colm Bairéad)
Tumblr media
Here's another case to be made for my crazed weeks-long binge to watch everything nominated at the Oscars this year. I would have never heard of this film if it hadn't been nominated for (and, in my opinion, should have won) Best International Feature. The story of a little girl, Cáit, who is shy, reserved, quiet, and timid by nature. This causes her family to view her as a burden, as a thing to be worked around instead of interacted with. So much so, that they pawn her off on a foster family when summer hits so they can go about their lives without worrying about her. From the instant the film starts, my heart bled for Cáit. While I wasn't as severely timid as she is in the film, and I had a family that was very supportive of me, I was intensely shy and had a hard time interacting with others as a kid. I can't even imagine living life like that under a roof that doesn't feel safe, where you not only feel like you're holding everyone back, but are basically being told and treated as such. To feel like you are unworthy of love because of something you haven't been given the tools to change as a 9-year-old is debilitating in a major way, and The Quiet Girl seeks to show the power of how much even a little caring and love can do. The film moves itself along slowly, taking its time in building its characters, showing their growth gradually, and at a pace that is so believable, it took me until right at the film's end to notice what the whole thing had been building up to. The last two words of the film, delivered with the emotional depth of a thousand oceans by newcomer Catherine Clinch (who plays Cáit), shattered any possible wall I had around my heart and had me in a puddle of my own tears as the credits rolled. With those last two words, everything clicked into place, and I understood what everything I had been watching for the last 90 minutes had been for. To put yourself in Cáit's shoes for that final moment, you realize that new life had been breathed into a concept that she probably didn't know could be any more than what she already knew. This film is about care, about growth, and about the power of what a truly loving home can do for a child that feels like they don't belong.
Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.). Sadly, no Blu-ray/DVD has been announced for a North American release yet. I hope that changes soon.
