(1908-1985) Lenwood Ballard Abbott, commonly known as L.B., was a cameraman who became known for his "trick shots" and discovered new types of photographic special effects. For example, while working on the 1970 movie Tora! Tora! Tora!, he learned that by filming the explosion of miniatures at an extremely fast speed, the size and power of the display appeared to be magnified. Abbott won an Academy Award for his work on Tora! Tora! Tora!, as well as for work on Dr. Doolittle (1967), The Poseidon Ad- venture (1972), and Logan's Run (1976). He was also nominated for his work on Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959). His other films include Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961), Cleopatra (1963), The Sound of Music (1965), Fantastic Voyage (1966), Planet of the Apes (1968), The Towering In- ferno (1974), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Abbott alsoworked on such television series as Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Lost in Space. Born in 1908, Abbott was the son of a silent-film cinematographer and began his own career as a cameraman when he was only 18. In 1957 he became head of special ef- fects at 20h Century Fox studios, where he remained until his retirement. Abbott died in 1985. Lenwood Ballard Abbott, commonly known as L.B.
