Showdown 2k25
Just like last year I want to kick January off with a flat popularity contest, showdown 2k25.
Automatically competing - everyone from last year (list), with the following exceptions
Last years winner - Donna Noble
Possibly Rose Tyler as the 2023 winner, but I need to think on it a bit more
I'm going to reassess a few from last year, specifically the real people
Rules for new nominees (tardis wiki list referenced below)
Anyone on the list will automatically be accepted
TV companions MUST be on the list
EU companions not on the list will be considered on a case by case basis. If they meet a reasonable definition of companion I will accept them, basic guideline is has their own tardis wiki article so I can actually check, multiple stories with the Doctor, none of these guidelines are hard rules, if you can justify them to me, I'll let them in
Propaganda is not carrying over from last year, if you want to go to bat for someone, use this same form
You can use this form to make multiple nominations/give multiple bits of propaganda at once.
You have until at least the 1st of January
list of competitors, anyone in green has propaganda submitted for them

Tim’s 2024: A Question of Focus
Tumblr media
DIIV
The more time I spend listening to new music, the more I realize the extent to which my year-end list is largely dependent on the records I’ve chosen to focus on reviewing for Dusted. It takes time to listen to and digest music to the point where I find myself with something approaching insightful to say, which means I’m pretty discerning when it comes to choosing albums to review. There’s only so much time available to listen to new music, so it pays to focus the firehose of continuous new releases into a manageable stream. All of the following have necessitated repeat listens, not only in order to get my head around them, but also to get my head into them, to lose myself in their world. There’s been a hell of a lot of great music released this year; these are the records I kept returning to.
1. DIIV — Frog In Boiling Water (Fantasy)
youtube
DIIV’s third album, Deceiver, felt like a step up for the band, and Frog In Boiling Water is the band really hitting their stride, melding shoegaze, dream-pop and grunge into a heady, addictive brew that scratches the same itch that Loveless and Siamese Dream did when I was a teenager. Thick, complex guitarscapes such as “In Amber” and “Somber The Drums” characterize much of the album’s appeal, but it was the scouring, dread-soaked “Soul-net” that I replayed more than any song this year.
2. The Smile — Cutouts (XL)
youtube
It’s been a good year to be a Radiohead fan, with two albums from The Smile, a solo tour from Thom Yorke, and a book of photography from bassist Colin Greenwood. The Smile’s Cutouts, the second of the year’s two albums, balances head-nodding guitar intricacy with zone-out synth jams. Compared to January’s Wall Of Eyes, it feels like an embarrassment of riches on the songwriting side.
3. Loma — How Will I Live Without A Body? (Sub Pop)
youtube
Emily Cross, Jonathan Meiburg and Dan Duszynski took a bit of a left turn on their second album, Don’t Shy Away, veering into more synth-focused art-pop territories. It didn’t always cohere, so it’s a relief that Loma have returned to what they do best on album three: stark, haunted indie-rock with plenty of atmosphere and gorgeous songs.
4. Luke Temple and The Cascading Moms — Certain Limitations (Western Vinyl)
youtube
Following his diversion into Arthur Russell-esque beat-drift under the pseudonym Art Feynman, Luke Temple returns to releasing music under his given name and recruits new band The Cascading Moms. Their chops are razor-sharp and the songwriting swings between languid and impressively funky.
5. Jessica Pratt — Here In The Pitch (Mexican Summer)
I’d not paid much attention to Jessica Pratt before this year, but Here In The Pitch’s combination of classic 1960s wall-of-sound production and simple but affecting songwriting really won me over. In some ways it feels like a more digestible cousin of Cindy Lee’s colossal Diamond Jubilee. “World On A String” and “Empires Never Know” are especially stunning.
6. Jon Mckiel — Hex (You’ve Changed)
2020’s Bobby Joe Hope was Jon Mckiel’s low-key breakout with its combination of found-sound tape loops and affecting songwriting. Hex digs deeper into more abstract territories that feel dark and dejected yet sweetly hopeful.
7. Winged Wheel — Big Hotel (12XU)
youtube
To my mind, shoegaze is at its best when the whole surge of sound feels like it could collapse at any moment. What keeps Big Hotel on the rails and piledriving forward is the twin-drum attack of Fred Thomas and Steve Shelley. The swirl and burn of the music’s relentless momentum feels like trying to take refuge in a wildfire, cooled by the balm of Whitney Johnson’s airy vocals.
8. Rosali — Bite Down (Merge)
This one was a common pick on our mid-year lists, and for good reason. Bite Down strikes a sweet balance between the melodic songwriting of my personal Rosali favorite Trouble Anyway, and the shaggy jams of her backing band Mowed Sound.
9. Nilufer Yanya — My Method Actor (Ninja Tune)
youtube
Single “Mutations” pulled me in with its intricate guitar and bass work, the tumble of toms, and Yanya’s disaffected purr. My Method Actor mines this seam thoroughly, approaching mid-tempo indie-rock with an artisan’s attention to detail and some achingly beautiful arrangements.
10. Body Meπa — Prayer In Dub (Hausu Mountain)
Much like Winged Wheel’s Big Hotel, Prayer In Dub throws the listener into a dense, swirling guitar-bass-drums soundscape of intricately shifting layers. The playing is absolutely stellar, especially from drummer Greg Fox, and sounds amazing when loud.
10 more in alphabetical order:
Cindy Lee — Diamond Jubilee (self released)
Ned Collette — Our Other History (Sophomore Lounge)
Corridor — Mimi (Sub Pop)
English Teacher — This Could Be Texas (Island)
Horse Jumper Of Love — Disaster Trick (Run For Cover)
Itasca — Imitation of War (Paradise of Bachelors)
The Smile — Wall of Eyes
Svaneborg Kardyb — Superkilen (Gondwana)
Wand — Vertigo (Drag City)
Xiu Xiu — 13” Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips (Polyvinyl)

3, 4, 12, 19 for the book ask game!
What were your top five books of the year?
You'll have to wait a few more days for the list as I make my final quarterly book recs post for this year :3
In the meantime, check my list below for some that I loved from new-to-me authors.
Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Yes! Here are a few:
Atef Abu Saif, via The Drone Eats With Me (crucial reading in your Palestine education, too)
Zeyn Joukhadar, via The Thirty Names of Night
Poupeh Missaghi, via trans(re)lating house one
Shelley Parker-Chan, via She Who Became the Sun
Joe Hill, via NOS4ATU
Mairead Case, via See You in the Morning and Tiny, both published by featherproof books (the press publishing my novel next year!)
Micha Frazer-Carroll, via Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health
Sofia Samatar, via A Stranger in Olondria
Gloria Susana Esquivel, via Animals at the End of the World
Emily Pettit, via Blue Flame
Cindy Crabb, via Doris: An Anthology
Kwon Yeo-Sun, via Lemon
Robin Coste-Lewis, via Voyage of the Sable Venus and Other Poems
ooooops that's more than a few. hope you find something there that interests you!
Any books that disappointed you?
Answered already, but another that disappointed me was The Dissolving Classroom by Junji Ito. I'm a huge fan of most of his work, and was excited to engage with a work influenced by Kazuo Umezz, a mangaka Ito admires and whose series, The Drifting Classroom, I love.
Alas, this Ito manga was thin on plot and character development and generally Not Good.
Did you use your library?
Of course! I use my university library/ILL, as well as my current local + hometown local library via Overdrive/Libby/Kanopy :)

Tiny book reviews
Once again it has been a few months since I did this. And I've continued to read even as work got busy, which feels like a big accomplishment!
I feel like my brain has recovered a bit from the exhaustion of the last few (more than a few?) years, but let's see if I actually remember things about the books I read two months ago.
She Who Became the Sun, by Shelley Parker Chan
It was... okay? It's nice to get out of Fantasy-Europe, but it also didn't really pull me in. I guess it feels kind of lonely, if that makes sense? I like books where I can feel a web of characters liking and caring about each other, and this wasn't that.
Drachenglanz (Empire of Ivory), by Naomi Novik
One of those middle-of-the-series books that I pick up at the book bazaar to see if I like the style and the rest of the series is worth reading, and in this case, yes it is. Even though I had very little idea what was going on or who the characters were, it felt engaging enough that I want to read the rest.
Grass for his Pillow, by Lian Hearn
I remember little about this, except that it was a quick easy read and left me annoyed that I had not yet ordered the next book.
The Burning God, R.F. Kuang
I wanted to like this trilogy, and was interested enough in the plot to finish it, but it was too grim and bleak for me, and while the first part still had the saving grace of characters who cared about each other, that fell away as they ended up dying or betraying each other, so I was pretty much just trying to get through to the end as quickly as possible.
Temeraire, by Naomi Novik
Starting to read this in the proper order now. I have very vague memories of reading this before, when my best friend lent it to me years ago, but really nothing past "dragon egg gets found on enemy ship", so I got to read and enjoy the rest as if I had never read it before.
An Artificial Night, by Seanan McGuire
I guess I have been well and truly drawn into this series. Going back to the Bay Area, even in fictional form, is always hard, because there is always a gaping hole where my friend Cindy no longer lives (I started reading Seanan's books mostly because Cindy knew her personally). This one was harder to read than the previous two in the series for a different reason, though - abducted children are much harder to bear since becoming a parent. Anyway, itching to buy the next one, but I need to somewhat reduce my TBR pile first.
Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt
I have no idea how this ended up in my TBR pile (got it from a neighbour, maybe?) and I wasn't even going to read it, because it is so not my thing, either in subject matter or style, but somehow it still drew me in. Glad to be done with it, though, because alcoholic parents just. Piss. Me. Off. Look, I know it's an addiction and they can't help it, but also get your shit together and stop making your children suffer, for fuck's sake. #yeah thanks Papa
Die Herrin der Farben [The Mistress of the Colours], by Peter Dempf
Another one that I think I got from our neighbour. Historical novels can be nice, but this one annoyed me right out the gate with stereotypical "women were treated like trash and corsets mean they couldn't breathe" stuff. Sure some of the "treated like trash" might be true, but to have that be all you have to say about the lives of women is just not enough for me any more. And I couldn't care about the plot, either.
Into the Narrowdark, by Tad Williams
A reread, and I immediately wanted to start into another one.
Tad, oh Tad. What do I say to describe his books? Do I love his books because the characters always care about each other, or is characters caring about each other so important to me because his books helped shape who I am? But either way, this book, like all of the Osten Ard books, is full of characters I love so much, from my decades-old friends like Simon, Miriamele or Tiamak, to my new "babies" like Jesa and Nezeru, and also full of mysteries that I desperately want the answers to. What is going on in Tanakiru? Why is Yeja'aro behaving like he does? And what the HELL is the Red Thing?!
Anyway, if you don't know what I'm talking about, go get yourself The Dragonbone Chair, and then the rest of the series. This is an order.
Voll im Bilde (Moving Pictures), by Terry Pratchett
I bravely keep trying to read Terry Pratchett, whenever I find one of his books at the bazaar, because I know everyone loves him, and I want to know what people are talking about, what all the clever quotes on tumblr are from and such, but it always feels like trying yet another dish from a country whose cooking style you just don't enjoy. (Not that I have encountered such a situation. Maybe I should say, like taking a sip of yet another alcoholic drink, knowing I just do not enjoy the taste of alcohol.) I guess I got even less out of this one than others because I'm not a film person, either. And I still don't understand the point of some kind of dark force making people make movies? But I also don't want to try harder to understand.
After all, have decided I need to reread all the Osten Ard books yet again, and to wonder some more about the Red Thing.

Another set of teams for a Pokemon AU, but unlike the last few ones I posted of what Pokemon characters would have more generally, this is a classic game-style AU where the characters are the gym leaders/elite four/champion.
In it we have: Shaggy as the Fire gym leader (Growlithe, Heat Rotom, Arcanine), Tinker as the Steel gym leader (Tinkatink, Cufant, Klefki, Klinklang), Dottie as the Electric gym leader (Morpeko, Yamper, Boltund, Vikavolt), Ted as the Dark gym leader (Inkay, Sableye, Spiritomb, Mabosstiff), Cindy-Mae as the Fairy gym leader (Sylveon, Shiinotic, Azumarill, Dachsbun), Nita as the Psychic gym leader (Alakazam, Galarian Rapidash, Gardevoir, Reuniclus, Beheeyem), Dee Dee as the Rock gym leader (Solrock, Carbink, Bastiodon, Garganacl, Lunatone), April as the Ghost gym leader (Sensu Oricorio, Cursola, Houndstone, Aegislash, Polteageist), Butch as the Flying elite four member (Altaria, Braviary, Mantine, Hawlucha, Squawkabilly), Josie as the Normal elite four member (Delcatty, Persian, Wigglytuff, Pyroar, Purugly), Shelley as the Water elite four member (Sharpedo, Gorebyss, Lapras, Whiscash, Bruxish), Henry as the Ground elite four member (Claydol, Golurk, Seismitoad, Camerupt, Dugtrio), and Daphne as the Champion (Froslass, Goodra, Volcarona, Falinks, Galarian Weezing, Lurantis).
I did end up putting a decent amount of time thinking about this, so if anyone wants to know why I picked certain types or certain Pokemon for certain characters let me know.

Postcards from Snagglepuss (Minnesota State Fair edition)
Of frappe brain freezes and home baking at its finest
You probably know, beyond a doubt, that some of the best exhibits at any fair are those of homemakers submitting their best examples of baking and preserving of all sorts. As well as, in their own way, those of the 4-H generation trying their best in these areas among others.
Which brings to mind something amusing in the wake of a brain freeze (transient, mind you) caused by one of those mocha-type frappes they serve at the Minnesota Farmers Union Building at the Minnesota State Fair. So for the uninitiated, a frappe of this sort is iced coffee and chocolate whipped up into a sort of a cross between a 7-Eleven Slurpee and those F'Real shakes. Rather delectable, though at times, they can deliver brain freezes on a par with ice cream, gelato, frozen custard even ... otherwise known as the "ice cream headache!"
It was just Huckleberry Hound and yours truly cooling off with these Farmers Union Frappes when the inevitable frappe headache, you might say, came along ... which came to the bemused attention of what we like to call "the Laydeez of Hanna-Barbera." Think of them as our answer to the Disney Princesses, but with a little more sass, a little bit of 'tude, you might say--to wit:
Penelope Pitstop, more or less than the "den mother" of these Laydeez;
Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo troupe;
Kitty Jo from the Cattanooga Cats;
April Stewart from The Funky Phantom;
Tina from Goober and the Ghost Chasers;
Debbie from Speed Buggy;
Representing the Clue Club, Pepper and Dottie;
Out of Jabberjaw's band, The Neptunes, Shelley and Bubbles;
The Teen Angels "themselves," viz., Brenda, Dee-Dee and Taffy;
Cindy Mae from The Buford Files;
Wendy and Rita out of The Galloping Ghost; and
Dinky Dog's co-handlers, sisters Sandy and Monica.
(For such who ask, Kitty Jo, though she be feline in nature, was given a special consideration being among these Laydeez, whose backgrounds, admittedly, came from "meddling-kids-and-dog" type scenarios.)
At any rate, these Laydeez couldn't help but be fond of sipping on coffee or frappes, depending on preference, and couldn't help but be bemused, as I said, at our having frappe-induced headaches. Which, thankfully, passed. To be followed by no less than Penelope Pitstop "herself," whose charm seemed to be on a par with Peter Potamus, leading our crew into the Creative Activities Building and, in particular, the section given over to home baking, canning and preserving.
The takeaway from all this, I have to admit, as it was explained by the Clue Club's Pepper at one point, was "one of realising that we gals really don't need to go through the ordeal of having to constantly diet, diet, diet 'just to stay looks-conscious.' Especially when it comes to the cookies, cakes, pies and sweet rolls."
And even then, for their part, Sandy and Monica couldn't help but be surprised that there was competition for home-baked dog biscuits, though, as Monica casually explained it to us, "it might make you wonder just how many of the largest size dog biscuits available you'd have to feed a dog the size of Dinky just to keep him satisfied--not to mention some water as well just to wash them down!"
"Let alone Goober when he's not pulling off that disappearing stunt!" Tina wryly added, alluding there to Goober's response to the presence of ghostly presences on missions with her crew, bound to give her compadres Ted and Gilly fits at times.
But at least once, fairgoers couldn't help but discern how utterly identical in dress Daphne and Kitty Joe were, with the inevitable selfie requests. (Though, as it should be noted, Daphne prefers stiletto-heel pumps and Kitty Jo go-go boots.)
Close by, a modest little sales area for chintzy kitchen gadgets as much as gourmand-type specialities ... and as if the Southern-style soup mixes weren't enticing enough for those Laydeez (enough so as to cause a run on several varieties, many such wanting to seriously stock up), lefse--a Norwegian potato flatbread, know--also attracted the Laydeez' curiosity. Hopefully, we may expect to hear in due time how the lefse came out among the Laydeez of Hanna-Barbera.
(Oh, and we--that's Huckleberry Hound and yours truly--made sure to pick up some of that enticing soup mix as well. Especially for some autumnal-type afternoon at Crazy Claws' place dictating especially hearty-type soups. And let's not forget the lefse.)
