No Time To Die (2021) - REVIEW
SYNOPSIS
James Bond is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica after leaving active service. However, his peace is short-lived as his old CIA friend, Felix Leiter, shows up and asks for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond on the trail of a mysterious villain who's armed with a dangerous new technology.
A direct sequel to Spectre much like Quantum of Solace was to Casino Royale, however this also serves as a finale to the Daniel Craig era of Bond films with a definitive ending that is suitably different and satisfying for this particular series. Featuring a complex plot and recurring characters such as Lea Seydoux's Madeleine and Christoph Waltz's Blofeld, No Time To Die ups the ante with a sense of urgency and personal stakes. Plus there's a number of winks to classic Bond that even casual fans(like myself) might recognize and they can be especially found in Hans Zimmer's score.
youtube
As is typical for this particular era, No Time To Die feels just as fresh and gritty as Casino Royale did and this has been carried through to Skyfall and to this. The action set pieces continue to look incredible and painful and whilst the likes of Quantum of Solace overloaded your senses and Spectre at times underwhelmed, NTTD gets its balance just right. The main plot does take its time getting going and the set up following Spectre pays dividends here. The world ending stakes are made clear and lead to some memorable exchanges between Craig's Bond and Ralph Fiennes' M and later with Watlz's Blofeld.
There are welcome returns for Jeffrey Wright, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomi Harris. The real stand outs for me are Waltz, Seydoux and Ana De Armas in a fun but all too brief appearance. Lashana Lynch's much advertised appearance is solid but I was left surprised that the character didn't have more of an impact and felt slightly underserved. Predictably it is Daniel Craig who is the star of the film and carries not just this film but has also carried all five of his 007 entries very well. I can't add anything more than what better writers could and have said about his tenure but here he gets a stunning send off that I'm sure will be talked about for years to come. He's a Bond unlike any other who feels more complex, developed and a far more interesting watch.
Unfortunately the weak link is Rami Malek's Safin. Ironically the villain works better as an off screen threat and Malek gives off a sinister aura with an accent reminiscent of classic Bond villains. With an island lair featuring a garden of poison plants plus a world dominating agenda on the top, the final act has such familiarity that it feels like a deliberate nod to classic Bond villainy. It's a shame that the story pretty much dries up because there isn't anything compelling motivating Safin's actions which is disappointing given the recent strong villainous turns seen in previous Craig entries. The final set pieces are terrific though, I just wish there was something more to it.
VERDICT
I've never been a huge Bond fan but the Daniel Craig era has changed my perception of Bond and has made the Bond films something I'd want to actively seek out. No Time To Die sees the Craig era end on a high note as it incorporates all elements that made this era of Bond so successful. While its villain lacks somewhat, the rest of the film doesn't disappoint and Daniel Craig leaves the role with a good entry even if it can't quite hit the highs that Casino Royale and Skyfall managed.
4/5

VIDEO: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Christoph Waltz and a BMW 507
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is one of my absolute favorite things on the internet, which is a sentiment share with many car enthusiasts. Thereās good reason for it to be so loved by car enthusiasts. First, it always features interesting cars, from the glorious Lamborghini Miura to the hilarious Fiat Jolly. Then, it brings the irreverent comedy of Jerry Seinfeld. I think you need a little bit of irreverence to be a car enthusiasts, especially in todayās world of internal combustion hatred and the lack of popularity in cars. So the show seems to really work well for car enthusiasts. Plus, Seinfeld himself is one of the biggest car enthusiasts in the world. This new episode of Seinfeldās true show about nothing features the ever-so-beautiful BMW 507 and the fantastic Christoph Waltz.
You probably know Waltz from his incredible performance as Nazi SS Col. Hans Landa. Waltz was able to portray an incredibly evil man with charm, humor and elegance, something that seems impossible until you see the movie. Heās brilliant. As Jerry Seinfeld says, āIām a Jew, but I love that Naziā. So pairing Waltz, with his typically perfect Austrian manners and the almost hysterically over-engineered BMW 507 is a perfect match.
Waltz, as an Austrian man, loves anything mechanical. Seinfeld picks him up at a hardware store, where Waltz is hilariously looking for something in centimeters because āinches donāt make senseā. Youāre right, Waltz, they literally make no sense. Once outside, Waltz looks at the car and says itās the perfect choice. He plays with the overly engineered door handle for what seems like minutes, as Jerry tells him to get in the car, as thatās the point of the show. Itās that scene that shows how perfect the car and Watlz are together in this episode. The 507 is so over engineered that itās charming and funny. Waltz is so perfectly well-kept and well-mannered that heās funny. Itās a charm that they both seem to share.
Then, they take a nice cruise in the BMW 507 to the most culturally diverse chain of restaurants in Americaā¦IHOP. Their banter about the food is funny and watching Waltz roll a ball of butter off his pancakes with the most polite disdain on his face I think Iāve ever seen is hilarious.Ā After IHOP, they take a gentle paddle boat ride with some champagne and a couple of cigars. Itās the way Austrians live, apparently.
Itās a funny episode and features one of the best BMWs of all time, and quite possibly the most beautiful, so check it out.
