James Cagney and Margaret Wycherly in White Heat (Raoul Walsh, 1949)
Cast: James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O'Brien, Margaret Wycherly, Steve Cochran, John Archer, Wally Cassell, Fred Clark. Screenplay: Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts, based on a story by Virginia Kellogg. Cinematography: Sidney Hickox. Film Editing: Owen Marks. Music: Max Steiner
It still baffles me that Raoul Walsh's terrific crime thriller White Heat received only one Oscar nomination, and that one for the scenario devised by Virginia Kellogg, which was notoriously revised not only by Kellogg but also by the credited screenwriters Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts with much uncredited help from James Cagney and his friends Humphrey Bogart and Frank McHugh. Where were the nominations for Walsh's no-nonsense direction, Cagney's superbly over-the-top performance (especially the scene in which Cody Jarrett goes berserk on learning of his dear old mother's death), Margaret Wycherly's tiger mom, or even Virginia Mayo's tough broad? Mayo was one of the more underrated blond bombshells of the era. She could have been a rival to Dorothy Malone and Gloria Grahame for tough-girl roles, but under contract to Samuel Goldwyn, she got stuck in forgettable musicals and comedies in which she played the foil to fellow Goldwyn contract player Danny Kaye. The good reviews she got for playing Dana Andrews's cheating wife in William Wyler's 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives showed that she had more acting talent than Goldwyn had revealed, but with a few exceptions -- White Heat being the most notable -- she got stuck in movies that played off her beauty more than her acting ability. Edmond O'Brien also shines in the part of the undercover detective who buddies up to Cody, and a good deal of the suspense of the film hinges on his hair-breadth avoidance of having his cover blown. It's to the credit of Walsh, the supporting players, and the fleet of screenwriters that although Cagney's performance fires the film, it never completely burns it up -- there's always someone or something else to watch.

This sounds like a silly question but what would some of your ocs dress up as for halloween?
My first Halloween ask this year!!! Let's go!
No this is the silly at all ^^ I love all asks. And this one sounds especially fun! I know you said some of my OC's, but I'm gonna take this chance to talk about all of them if you don't mind 😅
Poppy: I think she'd go for a classic, like a witch or a ghost. Though she'd be willing to dress up a little more daring if she was dressing up as a specific character, like Christine from Phantom of the Opera, or Lucy from Dracula (have you seen Lucy's wardrobe in the movie??? Omg it's just so pretty. Mina's too ^^)
Shiny: Loves dressing up. I promise you, she's been brewing up her costume since September. She also enjoys the classics, but she'll put her own little ~twist~ on them. Her favorite costume by far was when she was a pirate captain. Might even dress up as toon celebrities too, like Betty Boop. Complete with impersonations and everything.
Terry: Ehhh... Doesn't necessarily plan on dressing up, in all honesty. He doesn't necessarily dislike that part of Halloween tradition, he just doesn't feel up to it. Though he's got a long leather jacket he can put on for the spooky day!
Henry: I can see him going as a pirate too, or a bard. He'd go for a more fantasy themed costume (like Jareth from Labyrinth).
Moony: Moony knows he's already intimidating, so he'd rather not dress up in a scary costume. I can see him going for something simple, like a lumberjack or a silly scarecrow. I'm not sure if he'd dress up Cake as well, though if he did, Cake can compliment his costume, like being the Little Red Riding Hood to his Woodsman or something.
Ben: Maybe if Poppy, when they were dating, talked him into it, he would. Though I can see Ben saying that it's like a 'kiddy thing' or something. Bro doesn't know how to have fun 🙄
~
Sketch: They're too busy with their job, so getting a costume is the last thing on their mind. Though after they adopt Rooty (@marshmallow-biscuit-blog OC), I can see her being able to convince Sketch to celebrate Halloween with her. I think they may try to dress up in a costume they would say 'still retains my diginity', so they're not dressing up as a clown with Rooty. But they'll dress up as like a surgeon, or maybe even a baseball player. (They should dress up as Indiana Jones fr)
Betty: Betty likes dressing up, and I can see her wanting to set up a Halloween party at her house to invite her neighbors over (may or may not include Cagney. It depends on whether or not he was a jerk that week). I can see her dressing up as different jobs, like a policewoman or a doctor. Or, if her daughter Flower (@marshmallow-biscuit-blog OC) and possibly her son Chrys wanted to, she'd love to do a group costume. Like they're all characters from a movie or something.
~
Prism: NiGHTS characters have plenty of fun costumes! Even Claris' and Elliot's costumes, although classic, have their own fun spin. And since the nightmaren and possibly nightopians can change their appearance however they like, it just gives them more creative freedom! I think Prism would go for a gorgon. She can transform her long hair into snakes!
Thank you so much for this ask!! It was so fun to do! ^^

Cagney & Lacey was YEARS ahead of its time
It’s such a good show, that dealt with so many shitty awful topics in the 80s but addressed them so well
Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless are immensely talented actors, and I love them
Lockdown is giving me a good reason to watch these shows that I adore but don’t get to see all that often
