The subtle art of ignoring and desiring

Bruce Wayne 

Bruce Wayne is a man who does not hide where his interest is, much less his attraction. And in this case his object of desire at the dance is Selina Kyle, because she has stolen him, because he wants to get his mother's necklace back, of course. But Nolan has left a powerful reveal in this scene. It's about Bruce's sexual attraction. 

His unrequited one with Selina. 

The power of the gaze. Bruce likes to look at Selina Kyle, not only to know where she is for practical reasons, but to know who she is with, and to look at her. He looks at her like a boy looks at a girl he likes and doesn't dare to say anything to her.

With reason her alter ego later, Catwoman, says to Batman: “Don´t be shy”....

The arrival of Miranda Tate will confirm what we suspected: Selina Kyle is the woman who Bruce wants to look at, who he likes at that party, really.  That is Christian Bale's way of showing it.

Many will say that it is because of the necklace, so as not to lose sight of her and that Selina does not leave and Bruce cannot intercept her for the jewel before ... but no, come on, this is Nolan.

Everything is more complicated than that. Everything is mixed, the mystery makes its way between professional, private, romantic and rational  interests.

Miranda meets Bruce, and greets him. But even though she's a beautiful and an interesting girl, in a way she's bothering him, because he doesn't want to look at her, he wants to look at Selina the economic interest  making justice to recover what was lost, and the sexual interest are one. Inseparable, both wishes. To do justice to Selina, but to feel trapped in her, and therefore, to see Miranda as a potential obstacle. That's why Bruce at one point subtly ignores Miranda. That's right, he ignores Miranda to focus his gaze on who he really is interested in: Selina Kyle, who is dancing with a wealthy old man. Christian Bale shows Bruce's hidden sexual intentions openly.

But the object of desire does not correspond to the attentions.

When Bruce gets rid of Miranda, and finally goes to the girl he is interested in, Selina, we have the typical adolescent in love scheme: boy (Bruce) ignores girl (Miranda) in the conversation to go flirt with the one he likes ( Selina), but she was with another (the old rich man), who ends up as frustrated as Miranda. And everything happens without any kind of dissimulation, of course. Archetypal adolescent style hidden under all the subtlety of deception, professional interests, hidden justice that is intended to be done, the game of the cat & mouse of two enemies / lovers.

Bruce Wayne's desire to do justice to Selina does not justify his continued filtering with her.

Not the objectionable physical contact.

Nor is the praise of her beauty justified.

Not the brutal chatter of egos, not the kiss she receives even after having already removed the necklace. 

For being a vigilante there is some injustice here, Bruce Wayne, and you know it.

Betrayal of himself. Oh Bruce, when Selina alludes to what you hide under your pants, the first thing you think of is what has betrayed you. 

Are you having fantasies with a thief? What would think the Dark Knight of this part of you?

The jewel thief turns Bruce sexual, makes his thoughts turn away from what is truly important: practicality. 

When she steals his wallet and does not realize it, after the kiss is the proof: desire has overshadowed his ninja instincts, and the thief has deceived him. Selina has stolen his car, the attention of his possible love story with Miranda (annoying this one) someone who is apparently the best woman for him, and has made all his mastery in battle, in the details like Batman, blocked by his dark thoughts filled with sexual attraction and blinded by her.

The profit. Selina does not have shame, for that all us love her. She just want Bruce´s money. 

But after all, Bruce loves being stolen over and over by Selina Kyle ...

Selina knows about his attraction to her,  and so she takes advantage of him, over and over and over again, letting him float like a fool while she gets everything that belongs to him.

She ignores him, like he did with Miranda. The ball, that damn ball.
