The busyness of the diner went in one ear and out the other as you sat alone in the booth of the small restaurant just outside of Nashville. You were on a solo trip to see the Sturniolo Triplets Versus Tour. While many fans traveled with their siblings or friends, you were a tad bit older than most of the fandom, being just a year older than the boys. While being closer to their age was nice, you found it harder to find friends your age with the same interest in the brown hair, blue eyed YouTubers.
You scrolled through Tumblr on your phone as you sat waiting on the waitress to cash you out. You decided to stay in a town outside of Nashville to avoid the business - and cost - of the hotels by the venue.
"Nice hoodie," a deep voice caught you off guard. You looked down at your Fresh Love hoodie before looking up, jaw slack. You locked eyes with Matt Sturniolo. The Matt Sturniolo.
"Holy shit," you mumbled. He laughed slightly and turned over his shoulder, waving Nick and Chris over. Your eyes widened as you came face to face with the man you've dreamed about for years. "Oh my god," was all you could manage out. Your cheeks heated as you realized your appearance. A long day of traveling had you with no makeup on, a sweatshirt, and running shorts. Of course you would be meeting your favorite people like this.
You stood up, all of you exchanging introductions. "You in town for the show?" Nick asked.
You nodded, "Yea, I am. I'm really looking forward to it."
"Are you from here?" Chris chimed in, his eyes seeming to look deeply into you.
You shook your head. "No, I drove about seven hours actually," you said with a small laugh, "I thought about enjoying Nashville a bit, but figured right in the city would be hectic." The boys nodded and added in that they were in the same boat. They joined your booth and you all sat conversing for a little bit. This was what you had always wanted, just to have the opportunity to hang out with the people who made you laugh more than anyone else.
As Nick and Matt sat arguing in the booth across from you, you felt a bump against your knee. You looked down seeing Chris' leg against yours. Slowly looking up to meet his gaze, he smirked softly at you before breaking up the argument between his brothers as if he wasn't completely sending you into a spiral right now. There was no way he was into you...right?
As the night carried on you found yourself walking down the street with the triplet boys. Conversation having revealed you were staying at the hotel next to theirs. As you guys walked to your hotel you began exchanging goodbyes and taking a few selfies with a promise not to reveal their location until they were long gone. Matt and Nick began walking towards their hotel building but Chris lingered. "You coming, kid?" Matt asked over his shoulder.
"I'll, uh, I'll catch up with you guys," Chris called out. Nick and Matt shared a look shaking their heads with a small laugh. You stood there wide eyed as Chris turned to you. "You mind spending some more time together?" he spoke so smoothly.
"Huh? Yea, no, for sure," you stammered out leading him inside the hotel. The elevator ride was thick with tension as you rode to the third floor. Leading him off the elevator and to your room, you swiped in with a key card. There is no way this was really happening. This had to be a dream or a hallucination. Anything else seemed more likely in the moment. You opened the door to your room and he followed you in. He sat on your bed and looked at you with a smirk.
"Come here, you're acting so afraid of me," he chuckled lightly, referencing you standing against the wall. You smiled trying to relax a bit and sat down next to him.
"Sorry, I just - this has been a very exhilarating," a light laugh left your lips, "I've been a fan of you guys for a while." You spoke, blushing a bit and rubbing your hands against your jeans as you felt them get clammy.
"Just relax," Chris smiled at you, "I'm the same Chris whose videos you watch. Don't get too in your head." He tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, moving slightly closer to you. Your breath hitched as you looked down at his lips and then back up at his eyes. "Can you keep a secret?" he whispered. You nodded, hoping that this was leading where you thought it was.
Before you knew it, his lips were on yours. Your hands quickly found his hair as his made their way to your hips. Holy shit this is what you had always wanted. And it was better than you could have ever dreamed.
Within a handful of minutes you were both left in your underwear. Chris leaned over you, his arms on either side of your head. You were both breathing heavily as he leaned closer to you, "You're sure you're cool with this?" he asked, looking deep into your eyes. Nodding in agreement you pulled him down to kiss you again. It was a hungry mess of lips and teeth clashing together. Chris' hands found your thong, pulling it off slowly. You lifted your hips up to help him slip them off. He stuck a finger in your mouth and you swirled your tongue around it. Removing his finger with a small 'pop' he reached down between your bodies, finding your clit.
Your head flew back against the pillow as a gasp left your lips. He smirked as his finger moved in small circles. "Like that, pretty girl?" he spoke in your ear. Your hand gripping his bicep answered the question for him, but you nodded aggressively anyway. He slowly inserted a finger into you and put his thumb on your sensitive bundle of nerves.
"Oh Chris!" you whimpered. His hand pumped into you slowly, teasing you. You arched your back causing him to chuckle softly at you. His free hand held your wrists above your head as he looked into your eyes. You felt your body tensing as your orgasm approached. "I'm so close, Chris, please!" you pleaded. A whine left your mouth as he removed his hand.
"Ah ah. Not yet," he placed a quick kiss to your forehead as he got up retrieving a condom from his wallet. You were left there panting and frustrated. He rolled the condom on, groaning softly at the contact. You looked over his body. Just like SpicyTok suspected, he was huge. Chris walked over to the bed and grabbed your ankles. You yelped in surprise as he pulled you down to the edge of the bed and flipped you over, before you could even process what was happening. You felt a hand on your back causing it to arch. The tip of Chris' dick swiped through your folds, teasing you. A moan escaped you and he slowly pushed into you. Both of you shared a gasp at how great it felt. He gave you a moment to adjust before slowly thrusting into you. The feeling was unlike anything you had ever experienced. His hands held your hips as he moved in and out of you. The room filling with skin slapping and soft moans. Your previous almost orgasm not far away. A slap sounded through the hotel room as he smacked your ass. "Doing so good," he groaned watching where your bodies connected. "Gettin' close?" he smirked.
"So - ah! - So close," you moaned out.
"Go ahead, baby, I'm right behind you," he spoke breathlessly. You felt ecstasy rush through your body, practically collapsing had Chris not been holding you up. Your legs shook and you gripped the sheets until your fingers turned white as you cried out. Feeling you pulse around him was enough to send him over the edge as well. A moan of your name fell from his lips as he rode out his high. He still behind you, before slowly pulling out.
An hour or so later, you had showered and were now tucked under the covers. The memories of the night running through your head. Chris had left a little bit ago leaving you with the hookup for a VIP ticket to tomorrow's show.
You pulled out your phone, unable to sleep. You would never tell anyone about that night, but maybe, just maybe, you'd write a fanfic about it on Tumblr...

EXCERPTS:
As thrilling as it is to participate in the shared experience of watching two titans of their industry challenge themselves to a gladiator-style conflict with impressive skill and turnaround, their tracks also expose a long standing tradition in battle raps: using women as pawns and fodder for slinging insults. When the battle is arguing over who’s the bigger misogynist, does anyone really win? The women in these rappers’ lives sure don’t.
Kendrick fans have resurfaced interviews disavowing abuse and support from Alford’s brother; Drake’s supporters have been circulating quotes from young women rejecting claims that their relationship with the superstar was inappropriate. As the dust settles from the battle, you are left to contend with two realities. One, artists are engaging in a speculative exercise of bloodsport where the ultimate crime is violence against women and girls, a frame that is tragically not reflected in present-day society. And the other, these are sincerely held positions by each artist against their opponent, suggesting that both legends associated as colleagues for years despite being aware of purported harm that their respective crews were responsible for, and said nothing publicly. In either scenario, fans and consumers are left to reconcile a contradiction between the conviction in Drake’s and Kendrick’s lyrics and the artists’ present-day behaviors. The women, girls, and children affiliated with them are left to deal with the fallout in the public. Despite what their raps may claim, the safety of these alleged victims isn’t the priority: it’s ego.
Objectively, both men are trading in moral inconsistency. Kendrick can barely purport to have a moral brightline around abuse and parental neglect when he has collaborated with serial deadbeat baby daddy Future, claimed alleged abuser Dr. Dre as a mentor, and heavily featured convicted sex offender Kodak Black on his most recent album. Drake’s accusations against Kendrick fall apart in kind; he declares Kendrick an abuser in the same track as he shouts out alleged chronic abuser Chris Brown. This inconsistency is not contained to this conflict, either: in a recent spat between Chris Brown and Quavo, both artists weaponized documented physical incidents with women against the other in a twisted race to the bottom. In Drake’s response to Kendrick’s accusations, he spent the bulk of his song “The Heart pt 6” denying any accusations of sexual misconduct – claiming he was too rich and famous to be culpable – as well as alleging that Kendrick’s focus on the topic was due to his own childhood experiences with sexual abuse.  It ultimately becomes irrelevant whether the artists committed the alleged acts of violence or not, because what is ultimately revealed is that the trauma the women around them have experienced is accepted, until it’s time for a rap battle. These artists may be willing to weaponize cruelty against women as a critique, but fall short of committing to rejecting abuse around them as a sustained principle.
At battle rap’s inception, women became disposable currency for sensation, with no consideration for fact or fiction, legend or myth – and  young women were left to deal with the fallout. In the ensuing weeks, the women around Kendrick Lamar and Drake are going to be thrust into an unprecedented level of scrutiny – their social media exhumed and pored over, every statement and response dissected – in service of a conflict they never signed up for. While the war of words may be over (for now), the effects against the women involved continue to linger with a level of invasiveness that they never consented to. Abuse and grooming are now spectacles for consumers to gossip about rather than structural problems that need dismantling. The care for all parties involved is not prioritized, instead it’s about who “won” a rap beef. Regardless of whether or not the accusations are merely speculative, the sensationalism  continues to harm everyone involved. It is an ongoing shortcoming that cannot continue to be maintained in hip-hop’s next 50 years; it is tragedy enough that it dominated the first 50.

I'm uncomfortable calling the ghouls 'characters' because for me they fall in a third category after 'characters' and 'real people' : alter egos.
Characters are not determined by who plays them. They can change interpreters ad infinitum, like Doctor Who for example. Before their physical characteristics, they're stories.
The ghouls aren't characters because they weren't written. Tobias didn't give a story to each musician in the band. They came in, crafted a personality for who they were onstage, and made that personality grow through a mix of stage choreography and improvisation.
If they leave the band, the next musician to replace them doesn't perform under the previous member's name. And that's because they're not characters. They're irreplaceable. They're literally defined by who's under the mask. There's only one Aether and when someone took his place after he left, they got their own name based on their little quirks and the era they started in.
That's why it's so weird for me to excuse changing their physical characteristics by saying "they're just characters, Swiss is not Jutty, he doesn't have to be brown". We've all seen Jutty's last performance with Drag Talk and we all commented on him dancing exactly like Swiss - that's because Swiss IS Jutty, just with a fictional layer on him that allows everyone to divide them into two different persons.
Swiss is Jutty's alter ego for Ghost, he very much shares his features with his creator. And when it comes to Aether, it's normal that everyone was so weirded out when figurines were made based on him, with Chris' jewels being very present on them. Because 'ghouls' are a Ghost creation, but the little details that made Aether Aether belonged to Chris and Chris wasn't in the band anymore. Fans found the figurine inappropriate for a very legitimate reason.
Of course you can headcanon a ghoul as queer or older/younger because those are invisible details hidden under their helmets and therefore they fall in the "fictional realm". But if people are mad because you drew Cumulus skinny when she doesn't present like that onstage, or Swiss white when you can clearly see that he isn't, well, they're probably right to be pissed at the misrepresentation. It's a bit disrespectful towards the people under the masks too.
I think people get a bit lost on that topic because Copia is more of a character than he is an alter ego and they think the same goes for the ghouls. But there's clearly a difference between them for me.

I think the most aggravating thing about the Michaela situation is that Jess Bronwell did that genderbend to appease HERSELF. She's so utterly vile and selfish its insane. She ruined a story. She took away the opportunity from a dark skinned black man to play someone that everyone in the ton (even his own SILs) deem as handsome and crush-worthy but at the same time isn't a shallow person but one dealing with a lot of internal vulnerability and guilt. That sort of layered story, she STOLE that from a black man and not only that but she made sure John, Fran's other dark skinned love interest was done dirty too with the implication she doesn't actually romantically love him. That's not even getting into the amount of people who feel they are being cheated representation through seeing Francesca's infertility and grief/finding love again storyline. Things that media doesn't tackle with nuance or commonly at all. That said, I doubt Jess would ever have given Francesca's story the depth it deserved either way. Requires too much nuance she doesn't possess.
Then as other anon mentioned: casting Masali SIX YEARS in advance. Flying her out from South Africa. All the absolute STUPID decisions they made to make SURE Jess' fanfiction became canon: all to avoid making Sophie a black woman? And now Masali will have to deal with the ire from fans who are rightfully mad? That said most Franchael fans have been heartbroken yet really respectful about Masali which is more than I can say about Jess Bronwell's fans who have been lapping up this change and acting as if their beloved male characters weren't problematic and that Michael in the books was a misogynistic demon and his fans are homophobes in denial. Like pls. They also keep bringing up the "he was a colonizer" and as a brown woman I have to absolutely LAUGH at that. This is fiction. Michael Stirling isn't real and isn't actively colonizing the subcontinent just like racism has magically disappeared in regency England. Retconning what he was doing the years he was avoiding Francesca is far easier than gender bending the whole goddamn character. He could have been off traveling on a grief sabbatical or whatever but acting like they changed him because he was any more problematic than Anthony or Benedict or Colin is laughable. And its usually fans of those 3 who are yapping too. I wonder how they'd feel if these 3 male characters had been swapped into women?
And you know what im concerned about? They still haven't mentioned who's season is next. Benedict meets the lady in silver at the masquerade. But it takes him some good long while (2 years?) to meet Sophie/find her. So either they're gonna avoid the time skip entirely... or they're actually doing the insane thing of making Francesca's story next because Jess Bronwell has no guarantee she'll even get to tell her self insert fanfic otherwise. I'm not sure. The hints were very strong about Benedict being next season. And if Shondaland wants Bridgerton to get renewed they'll have to bring the numbers next season which means Benedict. Francesca certainly won't bring those views especially not after pissing off book fans. But also I don't trust how off the rails the plan for this show has gotten.
Chris Van Dusen had his problems but at least he never would have pulled this shit. Its clear to me that Jess is both pandering to fans with the Benedict being pan storyline and also pandering to her own self insert fantasies with genderbending Michael. I'm utterly disgusted with her and Shonda. I'm also shocked the publisher for Julia Quinn's books even let this happen considering the sale money they make with tie ins too. If nothing else, I believed this mess wouldn't happen because it would impact that symbiotic relationship between streamer and publisher.
Everyone angry about this change has every right to be and its so so valid. Idc what the "popular" opinion is. Its a very narrow-minded self serving take and celebration for those (usually white) people who are excited about this.
Everything you said 👏🏽I really can’t express enough how shocked and utterly disgusted I am by everything. Honestly all I can say is that if anyone is unhappy with this bs fanfiction, don’t give them views next season. It’s not even a fun watch anymore.

[HEADCANON/FAN THEORY #5]
Fuck off with the Tommy Westphall theory as far as I'm concerned.
Over several hundreds of media from movies to TV shows to video games to even comics are all set in the same insane shared universe as each other that deal with multiple different tones and aesthetics.
I personally call it "The Wildwood Universe" and a mere some of them are the ten you see above exactly as is:
• Chris Carter's The X Files Series (First nine seasons, Fight The Future, Millennium and The Lone Gunmen)
• Joss "Yikes!" Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel
• Todd McFarlane's Spawn Trilogy (HBO)
• Tom Fontana's Oz (HBO)
• David Simon's The Wire
• Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse's LOST
• Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad Trilogy
• Kurt Sutter's Sons Of Anarchy Duology
• Jeff Pinkner & J.H. Wyman's Fringe
• Remedy Entertainment's Connected Universe
And that's just TEN! Here's an extra five:

Chris Foss Cover Art, The Clockwork Traitor
Christopher Frank Foss (born 1946) is a British artist and science fiction illustrator. He is best known for his science fiction book covers and the black and white illustrations for the original editions of The Joy of Sex.
Born in 1946 in Guernsey, Channel Islands, Foss started working there as an artist in his teens, creating signage for local companies. He went to a boarding school in Dorset; his master encouraged him to train for an art scholarship. While studying at Magdalene College, Cambridge, he started pursuing professional magazine commissions, including the then recently launched Penthouse magazine.
Books featuring Foss illustrations include the 1970s British paperback covers for Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, several of Edmund Cooper's novels, and E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman and Skylark series. Some of the art he did produce was specific to the stories and some examples of this are the covers he did for the Grafton publications of the Demon Princes novels by Jack Vance in the late 1980s, Star King, The Killing Machine, The Palace of Love, The Face and The Book of Dreams.
Not being a fan of science fiction, Foss typically did not read the books he illustrated, preferring to paint scenes entirely from his imagination.
In 1975, Foss was hired by director Alejandro Jodorowsky for an intended film version of the science-fiction novel Dune by author Frank Herbert. He delivered several conceptual studies published in the book 21st Century Foss, ISBN 90-6332-571-1, containing a foreword by Jodorowsky. The project failed. In 1977 Foss worked for several months on studies for the movie Alien (not being used in the movie) and also did some designs of the planet Krypton for the movie Superman. Some of his crystal structures for the planet were realised in the movie, although they were used as ice-structures.
During this period Chris Foss illustrated the sleeve of the album Clear Air Turbulence for the Ian Gillan Band.
Painter Glenn Brown controversially appropriated individual space scene paintings by Foss and in the one case copying and altering it (Exercise One (for Ian Curtis), 1995) and in the other, leaving it entirely unchanged (Dark Angel (for Ian Curtis), 2002).
Chris Foss created much of the colour concept art for Sweetpea Entertainment's Traveller franchise, as produced by Imperium Games. He produced 12 pages of artwork for the new Traveller edition's first supplement, Starships (1996). He also illustrated a number of covers for Imperium's Traveller.
In contrast, Foss's numerous illustrations for the sex manual The Joy of Sex are done in a soft, natural style. The illustrations were based on photographs taken by Chris in his studio in Fulham, London.

A few 911 fans woobify ryan and it's a bit odd to me because they actively ignore a lot of things he's done that may be considered detrimental to his image. I mean none of us know him and social media is not everything but I'm not going to pretend I never saw the anti vax rhetoric, chris brown worship or that russell brand like (amongst other questionable things). I guess the level it bothers people depends where they themselves sit on the moral/political spectrum of those topics or otherwise they are expert at practising the art of cognitive dissonance.
I guess the level it bothers people depends where they themselves sit on the moral/political spectrum of those topics or otherwise they are expert at practising the art of cognitive dissonance.
THIS. Right. People are allowed to not like him - I mean, are we really going to tell POC how to feel about his wife's past racism or him saying he and his friends have used "slurs" before in her defense only to backtrack with "oops, that's not what I meant"? Are we going to tell the fans who depend on vaccines for chronic health issues how to feel about anxti-vaxx propaganda? Are we going to tell survivors of assault how to feel about him supporting RB? - and though I agree with calling out the difference in how R is received vs. his costar, R puts himself in the line of fire by doing dumb shit constantly. We don't have to go "digging" for dirt when it's on display both through his own actions and those of his wife, which he obviously went along with for almost six years (and even co-signed some of them directly). If someone has to change the facts to make their fave seem better or smarter than they really are, that person obviously knows how bad it looks and doesn't want to be looked at as a bad person for supporting a celebrity just because they play a beloved character on tv.
(If you have to label a woman as "abusive" or "manipulative" WITHOUT EVIDENCE to explain a man's actions, you know he comes off as a dick. And if you can't accept that, you need to find something else to occupy your time because the mental gymnastics don't leave enough room for genuine enjoyment of a fictional show.)

The Muan-Atlantean War
And what exactly is Wold Newton?
Different sort of Gamera March post today, and a history lesson in digging through a bunch of websites I found probably 10-15 years ago that permanently influenced my take on kaiju films and how I write about them.
Readers of some of my own kaiju fandom stories (barely worth mentioning here considering the weight of what I’m about to talk about) may have noticed hints of a concept I’ve been recently building up to tackling, the origins of various Toho and Daiei kaiju and how they relate to two warring ancient civilizations, Toho’s Muans and Daiei’s Atlanteans. The story of how we got to this point begins in 1795 - yes, 1795. Really.
The Wold Newton family concept, per Wikipedia, is effectively a study of fictional universes, with the aim to figure out which of those universes might actually be the same universe after all. This exists largely outside of official crossovers, although those are often considered as evidence. The premise is basically “if it fits, it’s canon, and if it doesn’t fit, some version of it might still be canon.” AKA the absolute bane of a certain no-fun-allowed type of kaiju fan that I probably annoyed the hell out of in my younger days and remain damn proud of it. (/hj)
The concept dates back to a real meteorite that fell in the town of Wold Newton, Yorkshire in 1795, and Phillip José Farmer, a later American writer who proposed the hypothesis that many improbably strong or intelligent fictional heroes and villains are in fact descendants of two families irradiated by said meteorite. It’s since evolved to be more centered on the universe-connecting I’ve described above, but the idea of the two families seems to still be mentioned on occasion.
(Important note: Wold Newton historians thematically phrase their findings in a way that describes fictional events/characters as if they were part of a real history and dismiss contradictions between the included stories as ‘errors.’ This is not a slight against established canon or willful misinterpretation of official material, but a device meant to imply the official material is an erroneous or exaggerated retelling of the ‘true’ events as present in the Wold Newton Universe)
Which brings us to the first leg on the journey to how this is at all relevant to Gamera, the article Prehistoric Survivors in the Pacific by Mark Brown. This an oft-cited article by later kaiju writers, seeming to be the first ever suggestion that the people of Mu are responsible for the prehistoric creatures encountered by modern explorers in various fictional island adventure stories. I’ll note here that this article actually has nothing to do with Toho’s Muans, or the film Atragon, or any other kaiju films for that matter. It instead concerns other fictional depictions of the real-world hypothesis of the continent of Mu/Lemuria (proposed to explain similar lemur fossils appearing on continents separated by water and since discredited with the discovery of plate tectonics).
Among those writers that expanded on Mark Brown’s concept and adapted it to kaiju films, I specifically bring up Den Valdron and Chris N., who have done much of the most creative and scientific writing on Godzilla, Gamera, and their ilk that I have ever encountered - everything from hypothesizing what Gorath really is in true astronomical terms to a personal favorite wild theory that connects every giant spider that’s appeared in every film ever.
In constructing a kaiju universe to tell stories in, these following articles in particular are those I remembered best and find most relevant to revisit (note that all these links are to an old Angelfire site, The Godzilla Saga, and were written decades ago by Godzilla fans from decades ago, so may contain terms or phrasing that didn’t quite age well. Also note that the timeline is very, very long and may require several full days’ worth of reading to get through, if one feels inclined to make the attempt. The first article sums up the main concepts in a more digestible format, however):
THE ALIENS OF THE SHOWA TOHO UNIVERSE: COMMON ORIGINS? by Den Valdron, edits and supplements by Chris N.
GODZILLA SHOWA SERIES TIMELINE by Chris N.
To summarize, most if not all of the science fiction aspects of the Toho universe are ultimately derived from the ancient Muans - the kaiju are genetically-engineered bioweapons bred for war, the alien races are the descendants of Muan space explorers, the advanced level of modern human technology (Maser tanks, moon base in 1999, etc.) is a result of studying technology left over from the Mysterian invasion in 1957.
Likewise, one can assume similar, Atlantean-related origins for the Daiei science fiction elements (although I personally posit that the aliens seen in Showa Gamera are not actually living Atlanteans, more on that in my upcoming Gamera vs. Guiron review).
That said, these timelines for the most part do not seem to endorse putting the Toho and Daiei films and elements in the same universe. Each one only requires that the other ancient civilization exist as a rival to justify the creation of kaiju, not that that other civilization also created kaiju or that any of them survived to the present day. They also most certainly do not endorse my personal attempts to create a timeline not only involving Showa Toho and Showa Daiei, but one that includes the rest of the Godzilla and Gamera films including all five Godzilla Millennium series timelines (GMK and Final Wars need to be heavily modified), GODZILLA(1998) and its animated series, and perhaps most significantly, the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, whose elements give some insight to events of Earth’s distant past before the Muans and Atlanteans.
But my most obvious Wold-Newtonian element may actually be the recent inclusion of a version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this universe - because the operative question isn’t “Why would they be there?” it’s “Why wouldn’t they be there?” There are actually quite a few stories and characters where I’ve hinted at there being at least some version of them in this universe (with the caveat that they don’t include any obvious complicating elements like superheroes or aliens or the world ending, etc.). However, and I feel this is important, when writing a story I’m careful to make sure the non-kaiju-related references have no more relevance than background details, unless the story I’m writing is tagged specifically as a crossover.
I’m not going to go over every single aspect of this timeline attempt, because that would be way too long and some of them are spoilers, but since this is Gamera March, I’ll end with my version of just the Gamera elements of this timeline (save for the aliens, which I’ll get to later, and Irys, whose origins I haven’t completely settled on yet. Also note that I include characters and elements from The Last Hope in my world-building but not the exact details of the legend). I use this timeline in the stories that are set in my main kaiju universe (only two definitively so far), but you can bet I’m probably still thinking about at least some of its elements, even in one-off stories and AUs that don’t directly follow these events.
12,000 years ago: In response to the Muans developing creatures that absorb atomic power (or similar energy) to grow larger and stronger, the Atlanteans switch from their arsenal of such weapons to one that includes a genetics program. The earliest kaiju created include Gyaos, Barugon, Jiger, and possibly Zedus, but when they (most significantly Gyaos) go rogue, the Atlanteans create Gamera to stop them - emboldened by the discovery of Universal Energy/Mana and their acquirement of Elias metals to use in the Magatama amulets to channel it (the same technology as the seal used on Desghidorah). Their efforts are ultimately futile, and Atlantis is destroyed.
12,000-10,000 years ago: Toward the start of the intervening millennia, a group of Atlantean survivors establishes an underground city near what would become New York. The purpose taken on by this city and its inhabitants is to allow Gamera to protect future civilizations from the Gyaos horde. During this time, Gamera’s reincarnation cycle is developed, including a number of eggs that would be distributed across the Earth and used as beacons to re-absorb and house Gamera’s Mana upon death. (The Atlantean survivors would also establish an observation outpost nearer to the surface, which would millennia later become home to four mutant turtles. At least one Atlantean inhabited the underground city up until that time, however, his intentions were ultimately malicious and an encounter with the mutant turtles left him imprisoned in stasis, where he could do no further harm).
10,000 years ago: The continent of Mu is destroyed by Battra after an attempt to gain control over the Earth with a weather machine. With humans now nearly extinct, the adult Gyaos turn on each other and the rest die of starvation. Gyaos eggs laid across the world during this time fail to hatch due to the recovering environment and associated increase in Mana, and would remain dormant until ecological destruction and the decline of Mana reaches another peak with modern humans.
3,000-1,500 years ago: It is unknown how many incarnations Gamera took on over the next many thousands of years, but by Magatama being discovered in association with Japanese cultures from these periods of its history, we can infer he had at least one, possibly many encounters with humanity in this stretch of time. It is unknown for what purpose he emerged or what other monsters he may have faced.
1965: Gamera, in either a new body hatched from an egg in the arctic or one that was imprisoned there at some point prior, is freed by an accidental nuclear explosion and (for reasons I will theorize in my review of the original Gamera) initially chooses to wage war on humanity. He would go on to later battle other monsters either directly or indirectly created by Atlantis (more on that upcoming in my Guiron review), including a reawakened Barugon (unconfirmed if Barugon follows a similar reincarnation cycle or if the cave contains a finite number of eggs) and the first new Gyaos of many to revive during this era.
1971: the events of Gamera vs. Zigra take place (the 1985 date appears to be an addition of Sandy Frank, who commissioned the dub in 1985, and if Super Monster is included in this timeline, it appears to necessitate these events taking place before 1980).
1973: Showa Gamera is Avant Gamera, and dies sacrificing himself against a larger swarm of Gyaos that awakens six years after the first.
1980: If Super Monster is included on this timeline (and at this point I’m leaning toward yes), then another incarnation of Gamera appears when, newly hatched, he somehow winds up placed in a pet store terrarium with other turtles. This Gamera would grow to full size over several days and sacrifice himself again to stop the Zanon spaceship.
1995: After hatching inside the atoll and growing large enough to lift it to the surface, Gamera engages another group of Gyaos, then later fights Legion and Irys (for now, I’m leaving Legion as a genuine interstellar lifeform, with no connection to the inhabitants of ancient Earth).
1999: Gamera succumbs to his wounds and dies, after his triumphant defeat of a much larger swarm of Gyaos (with the help of Godzilla Junior and the other broken-loose inhabitants of Monster Island, along with several rogue or territorial kaiju active at that time including Titanosaurus and King Cobra, in an event that becomes known as the Gyaos War).
2006: Gamera reawakens from another egg, and while only partially grown, manages to defeat Zedus. Which brings us to where our story (or one of them) begins...

currently reading: not in the middle of anything right this moment (im usually not i read books all at once pretty much lol) but the last thing i read was either medea or twelfth night can't remember and the next thing is going to be one of the Multiple books i bought 3 months ago on a trip that i still havent gotten around to (so either litcrit about medieval lit, litcrit on race in crime fiction, or uh. gideon the ninth. LMAO) i tend to prefer nonfiction esp since most of it is nonfiction. about fiction. so i use the works referenced as a reading list LOL
favorite color: TOO HARD TO CHOOSE i like color schemes more than individual colors tbh. big fan of dark red, forest green, and turquoise (with a dark brown as the neutral to balance it out mmm) so ill just say that so i dont spend 4 hours looking at swatches LOL
last song i listened to: idea/intent - the beths
last movie i watched: dungeons and dragons over a month ago (for someone who went to film school i Do Not watch movies very often. LMAO) despite watching it in an EXTREMELY TOO LOUD THEATER after taking an edible after a 2 month break (aka i was like O_O the entire fucking time), i had a Very good time. it's a peak 7/10 film. like ok it's not a 10/10 but it doesn't need to be and frankly shouldn't be. the platonic ideal of "they did absolutely everything they needed to do with this and not a sliver more" if that makes sense. also it's made for the chris pine girlies of 2013 (aka me) so im contractually obligated to enjoy it
sweet vs spicy vs savory: yeah kinda silly question agree lmfao savory i guess?? i like sweets but my tolerance for them is soooooo low/i get nauseous easily (the only exception to that is ice cream) + i like spicy stuff but i have to be in the mood for it too. i'll literally never be unhappy with something savory so.
currently working on: arguably like 4 different things because i'm still learning how best to manage my time without punishing myself lmfao the last thing i Literally Worked On was a scene for a far future chapter of foyf because i had an idea for how i wanted it to play out/i've had a lot of luck figuring out plot details by putting like. keyframes down basically. and filling in the middle bits. otherwise its that + Basically A Self-Guided Graduate Thesis (my house of anubis video essay series that's already unspeakably long and i haven't even taken notes on s3 yet.) + career-related writing portfolio bc im getting some ✨rejections✨ + director's cut of my capstone film from a couple years ago because she is. rough :) i'm very good at deciding to do something for Enjoyment and then stressing myself out for NO reason :)

Lil Dicky- Penith. (Dave Soundtrack). Album Review.
I don't know what I expected.
If you're unfamiliar with him, David Burd, also known as Lil Dicky, first received recognition in 2013 after his music video "Ex-Boyfriend" went viral on YouTube. The following year, he would release his first single, "Save Dat Money," Featuring Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan, which went double platinum and found even more success in 2015 with his debut album, Professional Rapper. Professional Rapper is an album I've had a soft spot for since I was a teen, as Dicky burst onto the scene with talent and promise. His lyrical prowess showed promise, and he had a knack for decent storytelling, like "Molly," and entertainingly comedic over-the-top premises, see "Pillow Talking." From there, his music career became more complex while he dipped his toes into the television scene.
He'd join the 2016 XXL Magazine Freshmen line-up, along with the likes of Anderson. Paak, Lil Uzi, 21 Savage, and others, where he'd perform admirably, dropped an EP in 2017 titled "I'm Brain," released his 2018 single "Freaky Friday" featuring Chris Brown, which would find wild success over YouTube, and release another single titled "Earth" which featured numerous other artists and received poorly from critics and fans alike. Any other musical escapades after "Earth" came solely from his ambitious TV project, Dave.
In Dave, Dicky plays a fictionalized version of himself as he attempts to cement himself as one of the best rappers of all time. Throughout its three seasons, snippets or full tracks sung and rapped by Lil Dicky are heard. On January 19th, 2024, after mixing, remastering, and creating full versions of show tracks that were initially bits and snippets, Penith (The Dave Soundtrack) was finally released.
To start, it's no Professional Rapper. His debut album was the peak of Dicky's musical career that I'm unsure he will ever top. Looking back on this album, I can recall the episodes where some of these tracks first aired.
I think the problem is that some of these tracks only work within the show's context.
For example, the tenth track on Penith is titled "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar." In the episode where Dave meets the esteemed NBA legend, you also get to hear the song. It works well within the show because Dicky portrays himself as an arrogant musical artist who believes his own hype so much when his work is aggressively childish. But when you take the show context out and present merely the song as it is...it's nothing. That same principle applies even more dominantly with songs like "Ally's Song" or "I Met a Girl," which fail to capture the emotional aspect of particular love angles pushed if you've either never seen the show or don't recall the episodes, and I barely remember them.
The point is that this soundtrack really doesn't work if you're not a fan of the show, which might be disheartening if you're a Lil Dicky fan but not so much a fan of his TV. I believe his first and third seasons were mid, and the second season was his best. His series shows flashes of compelling and sometimes hilarious programming, a lot like his work on Professional Rapper. And also a lot like his work here.
On Penith, there are some reminders that he can still spit, like in "Still Freestyling (Outro)," but it's buried underneath a sea of mediocrity. Dicky continues to push tired penis jokes galore across the board, and there's a particular four-track run starting with "No Fruits or vegetables" to "My Dick Sucks," where it's pure ass. Lyrically and instrumentally uninspired and messy throughout its run, but especially during this portion.
Besides the freestyling track or "Ally's Song," the only other song that really works for me is "Jail (Part 1)," as it embraces a ludicrous premise and tells a story in a typical, silly, Lil Dicky manner. If only there were more memorable tracks like that instead of a one-minute version of the opening song of the TV show.
Overall, except for a few tracks out of this lofty one-hour run, I won't be revisiting any of the songs on their own. A majority of these tracks were probably fine being nothing more than bits for the show because I can't imagine most people unironically listening to something like "No fruits or Vegetables." I'd like to think one day he'll make something more in line with Professional Rapper, but he seems more focused on television at the moment. 2.5/5.
