Finished my first flower sticker design for a dear friend yesterday: the San Fernando Valley Spineflower, or Chorizanthe parryi var. fernandina! There are only a few hills in LA that house them, and these beauties are at risk of extinction due to the spread of urban growth. Save the flowers! . . . . . . . #stickers #plants #flowers #stickerdesign #commissionsopen #plantsticker https://www.instagram.com/p/B__Qjz_hc9J/?igshid=a73uf3pka282

Life is neither a bed of roses...
... nor a carpet of thorns, it's just what you make of it.
Today’s picture isn’t of a rose, nor is it in the rose family (ROSACEAE), and it also doesn’t have thorns (though technically, the things we call thorns on a rose are actually prickles, not thorns or spines).  It does however have spines, though they are rather tiny (as is the entire plant).  Spines are derived from leaves, and thorns are derived from shoots.

This Fringed Spineflower (Chorizanthe fimbriata, POLYGONACEAE) was living on dry rocky soil on a ridge top in Poway, CA near San Diego.  You can see the small reddish spines that give it is name, as well as the fringed petals on the flower.  It is a common plant in Southern California and Northern Baja California growing on dry rocky slopes at elevations less than 5000 ft.  It can be nearly 1 ft tall, but is often growing recumbent across the ground.  It typically flowers from March to July.

The teeny-tiny intricate flowers of #ChorizantheFimbricata / #FringedSpineflower. I’m having a lot of fun with the new pocket loupes I got. I never really appreciated just how beautiful these little flowers are! Even if you couldn’t get a closeup of this patch it was great because there were a bunch of them forming a pink carpet underneath the yellow #tarplant / #tarweed / #deinandra. . #superbloom2019 #flowers #loupes #LosPeñasquitosCanyon #wildflowers #CaliforniaNativePlants #superbloom #spineflower #chorizanthe #botany #plants #junebloom #superbloom (at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByiOA8PHGHO/?igshid=30lxpko0c70j

#ChorizantheFimbriata! #FringedSpinefower. A masterpiece. Glad I’ve figured out how to get good macro shots on my phone even though I lost my wonderful loupes. #superbloom2019 #californianativeplants #spineflowers #chorizanthe #wildflowers #sandiegowildflowers (at Pine Valley, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzoLVKAH8yl/?igshid=1a2cj4bubgb2a
