with the amount of assignments i need to do drawing should be the last thing on my mind right now, but i really wanted to draw chise and this happened . . .
photo reference: i can't find the name of the photographer right now but i'll make another attempt later... i saw the name of Stefano Ronchi a few days ago but can't find the source anymore... and i'm not sure if it was correct at all... if anyone knows the author please tell me 🙏🙏

#my art#initially i was just tired of 🌽 bots flooding the mahoyome tag and decided to dilute their concentration in there#“just a five minute sketch” was my original plan#but im stupid and can't follow my schedule for the life of me#this took me an hour because i got really confused about the wing midway and spent 15 extra minutes redrawing it#i already drew a sketch using this photo and thought i understood the lighting on the feathers. turned out i didn't understand shit#mahoutsukai no yome#mahoyome#the ancient magus' bride#the ancient magus bride#ancient magus bride#tamb#chise hatori#chise hatori fanart

The Deal With Lindel's Reindeer

One of the reindeer here is obviously different - it is huge and pure white, obviously, and more importantly it doesn't seem to pull Lindel's sleigh at all, leading the way and coating the path in ice instead. In fact, it would have been simpler to have that reindeer pull the sleigh and cover the ground in ice at the same time, but Lindel doesn't do that.
Later on, he even asks the reindeer to 'say hello' to Chise, which it seems to understand.

All in all, Lindel doesn't treat this specific reindeer as a normal animal (which it isn't, obviously. Reindeer don't normally use ice magic.)
Also, reindeer, especially white reindeer are very spiritually significant to the Sámi.
My theory is that the reindeer is a gazzi

Here, Lindel specifically introduces himself as a shaman. In Sámi culture, shamans are called Noaidi.
All Noaidi had helping spirits or “gáccit/gazzi/gadze”, which varied depending on the realm in which the Noaidi was traveling. Gáccit usually manifested to the Sámi Noaidi in the form of an animal. Biret Maret Kallio, a spiritually guided Sámi woman, describes her experience with prominent Sámi views on gáccit: “Written tradition talks of three kinds of gazzi: One, usually a bird, accompanies the noaidi on journeys to the upper world; the second, usually a four-legged wild animal, accompanies the noaidi on journeys in this world, also called the middle world; the third, a fish, a snake, a lizard, or some other animal that can live underwater or underground, accompanies the noaidi in the lower world” (Kallio 1997).
It also seems like the gazzi is a companion to the person from birth to death, which also checks out since Lindel is shown to be accompanied by a white reindeer even as a child (though of course there is literally no confirmation that it is the same reindeer. The horns do look a bit different.)

Another source also said that the strongest shamans have reindeer bulls as their gazzi, which is very cool. (Though again, of course we don't know if it is a bull.)
I think it isn't unreasonable to think of it as a spirit companion to Lindel, which also adds a layer of complexity to Lindel being unable to leave his reindeer behind even after turning his back on everything else.
#i'm sorry if i'm flooding the tag with my lindel posts#this grandpa intrigues me#it's not that i find chise or elias or the other main cast less interesting#i just have this problem called 'lets pick an interesting side character to obsess over'#it is incurable i'm afraid#mahou tsukai no yome#mahoutsukai no yome#mny#the ancient magus bride#tamb#mahoyome#lindel#my theory#my ramblings

It's curious to me, how the general consensus among others when it comes to Chise's curses are "bad; we need to get rid of it (we just don't know how.)" Which, considering they are both curses made of pain and suffering, makes sense why someone wouldn't want to keep those around.
We (the audience) know vaguely how the curses interact with each other. The dragon's curse: made from strong emotions of anger and despair, provides Chise with her strength and durability against both magical and physical elements, at the cost of her own strength one day tearing herself apart. Cartaphilus' curse prevents her from dying, but offers no protection against injury or decay. Together they "keep each other in check"-- Cartaphilus will keep her alive, the dragon will keep her strong.
A lot of things have happened in the past arc that make it easy to forget the fundamentals of the first season. When the series started, Chise was a few steps away from walking off a roof. Even after she arrived in England, it took a long time before she decided that maybe life wasn't so bad. Her entire life up until that point had been nothing but misery; abandoned and alone, she had no one to protect her from the constant targeting and harassment by both fae and humans alike. She believed that the only way to escape her torment was through death... I think its a facet of her character that goes unfairly unrecognized a lot (especially after the first arc).
When she's in England and is going through her mental/psychological character development, she is still facing the imminent threat of her weak sleigh beggey body constantly failing her. Using magic exacerbates her condition, causing her to be sick and/or incapacitated for significant stretches of time. It's painful, it's uncomfortable, it's frustrating. By the time she realizes she wants to live, her clock is already running quite short.
Her solution is handed to her on a rusted platter. To be "just like everyone else", for once. Finally.
Going to school, hanging out with friends, using magic without it killing her-- all things shes never been able to do before. All thanks to the curses trapped in her. These things that should be considered a horribly tragic fate have now become her salvation. Both physically and mentally, she's the strongest and most resilient she's ever been. Yet, when faced with the idea of liberating herself from her curses...
The curses only work the way they do because they're in sync with each other. Taking away either curse would leave her vulnerable to the other-- the dragon's curse would slowly overwhelm her into a brutally agonizing death, while Cartaphilus' curse would leave her to live and suffer through the constant breaking down of her sleigh beggey body.
When told about the reality of her curses and just how severe they are (not just to her, but to the people around her), she doesn't seem to completely understand what that may mean for herself and her future. Or perhaps, she just doesn't care. After a life where pain and suffering was her "normal", she finally has the means to create something meaningful and positive out of herself. How could that possibly be a bad thing?
She understands on some level that these curses were only ever meant to be temporary. Elias' original goal, to keep Chise alive in spite of her sleigh beggey curse, has not changed. Tacking on two more curses was not a part of the plan, and though they've offered a temporary solution and some time, curses are called curses for a reason. They cannot be relied upon. They've got to go.
But getting rid of those curses (both, or either) essentially puts her back at square one. Back to the pain, discomfort, and illness. She probably won't be able to use magic without hurting herself, too. She's gained freedom in both mind and body for the first time in her life. Sure, she encounters a few hiccups, but considering what she's used to, this is a big step up.
Something has finally given her the power and freedom to spread her wings and fly. Would she be able to clip her own feathers just because that power is "supposed" to be "bad"?
Could she? Could you?
Through it all, everyone she's come across has appointed her curses as a problem. Everyone, except...
#i just find it inchresting. i like this guy i think hes cool but i also think his student is a sociopath#<- things that can also be said about elias and chise i suppose#i just KNOW elias is kicking himself for not knowing the existence of this mage when his student was on deaths door last season#sorry this turned out a lot longer than i thought it would#mahoyome essay writers anonymous lets goooooooooo#tamb#the ancient magus bride#mahoutsukai no yome#mahoyome#chise hatori#im not tagging spoilers anymore go read it whores its FREE !!!!!

Autism Incoming
Thought of writing a fic with a Beauty on the Beast take on robinthorn (Elias x Chise) but with a twist.
Chise is a slave of the cursed prince and is sent out to convince the caster to undo it. Caster being, Elias. A stubborn fae bitch that got petty over being called hideous by the prince and said "Oh yeah?" And magicked all over the place.
Chise isn't particularly loyal to the crown but she does fear the prince's wrath. Now she's at the mercy of Elias, but he's not all that bad. Despite the odds, they manage to bond and stuff. Mehhh hard to explain I just wanted to feed the tag lol

Do you have any Joseph/Cartaphilus headcanons?
Man I thought about this for ages and I have to give a disappointing no :/
Except maybe that I think he should have a cane and I think he should bonk Chise over the head with it when she's being extra stupid
Sometimes pain can be so debilitating that it can be hard to stand without help. And idk maybe you can argue that he's immortal and not even really human therefore he doesn't need a silly old cane.
But I just think it fits him better to have a cane. Also maybe Chise bought or hand crafted it for him and I can see him being super stubborn but taking it anyways cuz whatever.
Maybe he has an emotional support throw blanket that he carries around with him over his pajamas cuz he's cold all the time and the cold makes his bones hurt. I could also see him wearing soft cardigans over his clothes. Walking around like a sickly Victorian child
And maybe he has a specially made teddy bear heat pack that Chise learned to make from Elias that she gave to him. And it has some helpful sleep herbs like chamomile and lavender
#he doesn't deserve it for all the atrocities but i feel very compelled to imagine him with nice things#I like to imagine his giant bed in the bottom of the well and how soft it is...#all this to say maybe i do have some headcanons#but nothing big just like#small day to day things living in the well#what a fucking shitty weirdo#let me give you another blanket man and maybe then you'll calm down#the ancient magus bride#cartaphilus the ancient magus bride#joseph the ancient magus bride#joseph cartaphilus#i imagine Chise being so kind to him because that's really just her nature#and i mean that in a begrudging way#like 'fuck you take the cane' in her own Chise way#their relationship is uber complicated but#she hasn't lost her kindness and ability to empathize with every breathing thing on the planet yet#except maybe after season two she could have a moment like that...#maybe she finally snaps at Joseph and he's just hysterically laughing about it cuz yay she's like him even more now#wouldn't that be fun#I'm rambling in the tags again#nym's entry

i think there is a convo to be had about how chises dragon curse - for all of its confusing mechanics - functions less as a plot point and more of a physical manifestation of the character growth chise has yet to undertake, and an unwillingness to reckon with the person she is past the roles she serves in the lives of others
chise takes this curse on when she returns to the auction house, and location is everything here. at its core, this curse is anger, hatred, fear, pain, and a deep desire to return to comfort - destructive emotions that rip apart all it touches. when chise breaks down at the sight of the frightened dragon for sale, elias tells her that those are not her emotions, that she shouldnt let them overtake her - but they are her emotions, that dragon is her, and there was never a possibility that she wouldnt follow it on its flight over london. seeing as things have "worked out" for her til now, chise hasnt yet reckoned with the gravity of what it meant to sell her life away. she hasnt reckoned with the hatred and anger and pain that she still harbors - unfortunately, moving to a quaint little english cottage does not undo a lifetime of neglect. her attempts to fix those around her, philomela being a prime example, will only get her so far. eventually she will have to look within, and i dont think shes done more than dip her toes in. "this is my past, these sad things happened to me, now things are better" is not the end of her self-reflection. now that we know the past she carries with her, what does all of that mean for her? what kind of person is she? who will she become?
im thinking too about this recurring theme of "atavism." its a key feature in tambs dragons, who are able to evolve at will to suit their needs, and yori also mentions it when noting chises appearance. atavism is the reoccurrence of dormant or ancestral traits, and you could make the argument that its also functioning metaphorically here. evolving to suit the world around you, past burdens and trauma reemerging when its unexpected or inconvenient... my thoughts on this are loose right now
theres this concept that we've been getting, too, that chises dragon curse is something temporary. arc 1 left us with the idea that her two curses must remain in balance, in perpetuity, for her to survive. but theres this new interpretation of it being something that serves her for now, but she might shed it once it fulfills its purpose
continuing with the idea of the dragon curse as a sort of... idk, ptsd metaphor, what are these two examples from ch 98 implying? that her negative emotions will serve her when it comes time? that this sort of baggage cant be exorcised away? framing the dragon curse as temporary broaches the possibility of chise one day being cured of it, but what does that mean? and should she be?
(of course, the 'future chise' we see in ch 1 doesnt have a visible left hand, but is that meant to be a literal glimpse into the future, anyway? theres also a dragon made of vines behind her in that panel, didya notice it?)
i mentioned the auction house at the beginning because i feel that if chise sheds the dragon curse, it will be in much the same way she attained it. chise has been told that she is free, she is loved, she has told her "mother" that shes moving on with her life. but all of this is just the beginning - and lets be real, i dont think elias is putting her into therapy. joseph is the only character i can think of who is truly, earnestly pushing chise toward the difficult self-reflection she needs. im excited to see what he says when she taps into her "cursed fury"
this is why im so excited that we are being told explicitly, time and again, that things are about to go really bad for chise. tamb is such a masterwork of character writing, it is so incredibly emotionally intelligent and gives so much grace and patience to its characters. i have no doubt that chises character arc is going to go in such a spectacular direction
#original#chise#the ancient magus bride#wasnt gonna tag this but it got longer once i started typing#this is just spitballing. just jokes. yknow#i think the dragon curse is more of a metaphor because yamazaki really struggles with direct and compelling action-based plots#her expertise is in character writing and that is not a diss. if you read my webcomic you would know im the same way. what action? shut up#which is why i feel ghost and witch is a much weaker story. it doesnt know what it wants to do and the storyline is confused as a result#not confusing. confused.#i am content with tamb the way it is. fight scenes are boring to me. i want the characters to moosh their fingers in each others brains

chise and renfred again (ref under the cut)
used a screenshot from "the last of us" tv show as a reference
when i was 14, the tlou game playthroughs on youtube were my most favourite thing ever... i screamed in joy when the show was announced years later but i haven't yet watched it for some reason
* * *
switching from mechanical pencil to a regular one, using a reference and scaling up the drawing changed EVERYTHING... i didn't sweat over every single little detail and the process was a lot more enjoyable. im not letting go of regular pencils ever again 🤣🤣
....also i had to mirror the drawing because i forgot renfred doesn't have an arm AGAIN....... (last time that happened to joseph)
UPD i just realised that his scars are supposed to be visible after mirroring the drawing jesus fucking christ
