A Chinese mitten crab. Scientists from the Natural History Museum have built traps to manage UK’s rising numbers of the furry crustaceans. The crabs, which can grow bigger than a 10in dinner plate, are an invasive species that prey on our native fauna – ‘eating us out of house and home’, as one researcher put it

[ ID: A digital drawing of Shen Woo from "The King of Fighters." He's seated at a restaurant booth as he raises a small glass of beer to the viewer. On the table in front of him is a plate of steamed Chinese mitten crab with a side of sauce. In the corner reads, "生日快乐!2024年9月10日.“ /. End ID ]
Happy Birthday, Shen Woo! He's been holding me together these past few months. I love him a lot.
I was planning to keep this relatively simple due to the semester starting and, uh, well, change of plans apparently loll

Crab and lobster claws
Tumblr media
We shall start with lobster claws. They have two claws, a crushing claw and a grabbing claw. The crushing claw is the larger of the two and where the pincers meet there are teeth like mounds that are used for crushing. The claw gets thinner towards the edge on the outside but also has a lip, like a seam. There is a dip just before the claw starts when the claw is closed , which appears to have exposed muscle or soft tissue, likely to allow the pincer to move. There is also a short thick Spike like object to the side of the claw on the face.
The grabbing claw has a longer pincer than the crushing claw, and is also thinner. This claw also has teeth but thye are thinner than the other teeth as this is used for gripping and then tearing what it is eating. The spikes on the edge are smaller than the crushing claw.
Both claws also have a darker brown tone around the edge but closer to the body it instead has black or brown spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiddler crabs. In male crabs one claw is significantly larger than the other and is used during mating, waving to attract females and being used to fight other male. It is also possible for the crabs to bluff if their claw is larger but weaker than the other crab. The claw on the left has a hook shape on the upper section and extends quite far past the lower section and also have small jagged teeth. The claw is light grey and brown with white speckles, the top section is alsonthicker than the other. The claw could also be used as the start of a crab themed sword.
The right claw is thicker than the other claw and appears to get thinner as it reaches the claw tip, with the top section havepung a light curve downwards. It also has the speckle-y look before the pincer sections start. Along the top pincer there is also a small groove. This may be a fact that can be useful later. This may be because of the angle but the arm does appear to have a more consistent thickness and only changes size by getting thinner as it gets to the tip.

Mitten crabs. The left one is Chinese and the right is Japanese and they are both considered a pest. The majority of the claws are covered by very thick hair, which appears to be quite fine. The claws are quite thin and straight on both of them. The Chinese crab has the straightest claws and also has short but jagged teeth and are entirely white. The Japanese crab is longer and thinner but also has purple fading out into the claw with dark spots, though if there are teeth they are very small.

Red egg, purple shore
The red egg crab, first of all, is quite cute. From certain angles, it looks quite a bit like a pancake and is quite vibrant, so if I wanted to, I could make the top shell into armour segments if making a crab themed soldier. But onto the claws, the section the claws attach onto is a dull faded orange colour, and the claws themselves are a black colour. This crab appears to have claw elements from both scorpions and the lobsters crushing claw. The teeth on the top side of the claw appear to be quite sharp and good at cutting, like the claws of a scorpion. The bottom set of claw teeth, however, appear to be much thicker than the top set and appear to be meant for crushing, like the lobster. They appear to be shorter than some of the other claws in comparison to its size, but are also much thicker. the tops of the claws have a steady curve along the top, going in towards the body, but when it gets closer to the tip there is a significant increase in angle, creating a sharper hook or point.
The purple shore crab appear to be the smoothest of the crabs and the claws share this trait thye appear to be quite thick but also seem very round. The other claws I have liked at have very defined sides to their claws, but this does not appear to have this trait. The claws themselves are also quite rounded but also don't appear to have many teeth. I suspect that this is due to the crab not being as aggressive as others. The purple shell is also quite vibrant and could also be used as armour plating

Blue, dungeness
The crab on the left is called the blue crab. I quite like this fact, especially since there is a crab that is more blue than this one. The shell of this crab is a particularly nice shape as I like the spiked curve that starts with long smooth spines. Another good candidate for armour, would work well in a scale or brigantine pattern. The claws on this crab are very long and thin in relation to the body as other crabs have been a bit bigger and thicker. The claws and the section that they connect to is particularly long to the normal. The colour goes from a a dull blue, which is almost a green colour, and transitions into a dark dull red colour with black tips. Both sections are quite thin but have quite a few sharp points on it. This is probably one of the more aggressive crab looks, though there is another that is much more aggressive.
The dungeness crab appears to be what most crabs seen in media is based on. The claws are particularly thin but have a medium length for crabs. For lack of better words, this claw looks the most like a claw.

Coconut crab, ghost crab
The coconut crabs claws are massive, the size of their body and are designed specifically to crush things and very thick. They are terrifying. They are a shiny brown colour with several bumps on the carapace, making the surface very rough but still having smooth sections. They can kill birds.
The ghost crabs are comparatively cute. They have small eye stalks poking up out of a square body and their claws are tiny. They appear to be quite round and have defined surfaces. The claw sections appear to be about equal in size and are straight and go to a point.
