Today's translation #528
Yuri!!! on Life official guidebook, Toshiharu Mizutani (Art Director) interview
Part 5.
-- A lot of scenes take place abroad - was there anything that was difficult to draw because of that?
M: The restaurant they eat at in China. The partition between booths wasn't a wall, but a latticework. I was expecting it would be fine to make it a wall, but I was told that it should be "as it is in the reference materials". But my staff was working so hard and had already created resources for that. I'm used to draw everything by hand, so it's not that I wouldn't think about drawing something like that, but I'd rather choose to simplify it. But if we have the resources then we can later on put them together as needed.
-- Did your impression of figure skating change compared to before you started working on the project?
M: It's an occupational disease - I usually start to collect related stuff with every new project. This time, too, I bought a lot on Amazon. There was that American movie "Ice Castles" in old and new version, so I watched both and other movies like that, too.
-- To observe how rinks look like.
M: Yeah. Fences, the ice, lights and the construction of the building. It was quite fun to do that. Fun, but at the same time I was thinking "It's such a bother that I have to do that..." (laugh). But in Yuri!!! on ICE the composition of the story was very good, the action and emotions, and the local colors of every place were also featured, in addition to athletes working hard to achieve their goals - it was very good. A lot of fun stuff. I was working, while looking forward to the new episode every week.

Few of the funfair rides you see today are as iconic as Ferris Wheels, or Big Wheels as they are also known. Taking its name from the wheel built for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893 by George Washington Gale Ferris. Though William Somers installed three fifty foot wooden wheels in 1892 so perhaps they should be called Somers Wheels. Then again Pietro Della Valle, a Roman traveller wrote of riding a Great Wheel in Constantinople in 1615, so should they be Constantinople wheels or Della Valle Wheels? Whoever deserves the naming rights, it was George that actually ended up adding his name to one the enduring legacies of the funfair industry. Lets take a look at some of the weird and wonderful wheels around the world. The Original Ferris Wheel The original 'Ferris' wheel pictured here was 80.4 metres high, 264ft if you are sticking to olde measures, not sure how many cubits that is if you are even older than Imperial measurements. It was intended to rival the Eiffel Tower which had formed the centre piece of the Paris Exposition. The axle weighing 71 tonne was the world's largest forging at that time, and the ride had a carrying capacity of 2160 people, unrivalled today Indeed the world's biggest wheel the Vegas High Roller managing a little over half that. The Vegas High Roller Currently the world's highest wheel is the Vegas High Roller. At 550ft (158.5 metres, 366.67 cubits) high, this beats the Singapore Flyer by a scant 9ft. Rotating on two custom designed spherical bearings each weighing just under 9 tonnes. The passenger cabins are electrically rotated to maintain a smooth level ride and each weighs 20 tonnes. A wheel currently being built in Dubai should claim the crown as world's tallest wheel if it ever opens, currently construction is 5 years behind schedule. The Vienna Riesenrad Located inside the Vienna Prater (the world's oldest amusement park), the Riesenrad was constructed in 1897. This has unique old fashioned cabins, one of which can be hired complete with dining and a champagne meal. It was designed by Harry Hitchins and Hubert Cecil Booth, a pair of British engineers, and constructed by Lieutenant Walter Bassett Bassett an English engineer. to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I. At 212ft high it is nowhere near the 'big' wheels out there, but it adds a touch of class all its own. The Tianjin Eye Observation Wheel Also called the Tientsin Eye, this is a mid height wheel at 394ft, what makes it unusual, is that it is the only major wheel actually built on a bridge, in this case the Yongle Bridge, over the Hai River in Tianjin China. The Osaka Wheel This is an oddball in the wheel world. Rather than being round it is an oval shape. The main structure doesn't move rather the cars move around a track. The Big O Situated in the Tokyo Dome City, Japan. This is not only the world's largest centreless wheel at 200ft high (it has an actual roller coaster built through the middle), it also has a number of cars with karaoke machines fitted. We are not actually convinced that being stuck on a ride for 30 minutes with someone singing badly is a great move. Baseball Ferris Wheels Not particularly large, but certainly novel. Built in Comerica park, downtown Detroit. The location of the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball Team. The Waggon Wheel No, not a biscuit, though legend has it that the biscuit was a similar size before inflation kicked in. This is located in Flamingo Land Amusement park here in the UK. Themed around the iconic plains wagons of old America. YeeeHaaa The Golden Reel Figure 8 Located in Macau, this is one of the highest wheels in the world. Not due solely to its size, but to the fact that it is actually built to join two hotels together. You board on the 23rd floor, and what makes it even more unique is that fact that it is a figure 8 wheel, having 2 loops does that make it Ferris Wheels? Royal Tyres Wheel The Uniroyal giant tyre wheel created for the 1964 New York World's Fair. Now located in Michigan this 80ft high wheel was designed by the same firm responsible for the Empire State Building, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. Driven by a 100hp engine the wheel carries 96 passengers. John Kormeling Wheel Created by the artist John Kormeling, this is one wacky wheel. Instead of gondolas for the passengers, it has flat structures that you actually park you car on, yes, you don't even have to leave your car to ride this wheel. The Priyat Big Wheel This wheel isn't particularly tall, or have any unusual features. Oh, except for being quite close to a major nuclear disaster. The wheel is virtually brand new having hardly been used before Chernobyl went tits up. It isn't one we would recommend visiting, although there are actually companies now running tours to the area around Chernobyl. Eccentric Wheel These are an uncommon version of the wheel. Instead of the cars being suspended on axles at the ends of the arms, they travel on a track that zig zags inside the main structure, so they slide towards the centre of the wheel then away from it. There was one built in 1920 at Coney Island, and another at one of the Disney parks. Underground Ferris Wheels A mere 65ft high and only 6 cars would make this a pretty poor example for Ferris Wheels. Until you consider it is actually underground inside a giant salt mine. Located in Turda, Romania, the mine dates back to the 13th century and is 368ft beneath below ground. I guess that technically makes this the world's lowest wheel! Read the full article

From October 13 to October 16, the World AIoT Innovation Alliance (WAIA Alliance) launched two overseas exhibition areas and theme forums in Hong Kong and Singapore for the first time.
Previously, during the IOTE 2024 22nd Internet of Things Expo Shenzhen Station & AGIC General Artificial Intelligence Conference and Industry Expo on August 28 this year, the World AIoT Innovation Alliance (WAIA) was officially established in Shenzhen. The alliance aims to build an open, cooperative and win-win industrial cooperation platform to fully promote the research and development innovation, standard setting, market expansion and international cooperation of AIoT technology, help smart IoT enterprise groups quickly connect AIoT institutions and important corporate organizations in various countries and regions around the world, and realize the sharing and construction of global resources, channels, talents and ecology, and attract AIoT associations from more than 15 countries and regions such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan, China to join the alliance.
In order to further exchange the development characteristics and cooperation needs of AIOT industries in various countries and regions, and continue to promote the implementation of WAIA in major overseas markets, the first WAIA overseas booth area and theme forum were organized by the Chairman of the Hong Kong Internet of Things Chamber of Commerce, Zhuang Yijian. The booth area is located in the Hong Kong Electronic Fair â Autumn Edition, which brings together smart IoT companies from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and various countries and regions to jointly display new IoT applications in the era of artificial intelligence. It also invites important guests from the fields of artificial intelligence and IoT and enterprises and institutions in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Ningbo, Zhuhai and other places to discuss industry-related hot topics and jointly expand opportunities for group overseas expansion. During the exhibition, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, Chen Baili, visited the IoT exhibition area many times to learn about the products and applications of each exhibitor in detail, and put forward corresponding opinions to encourage exhibitors to develop better.
01New Trend of AIoT: Embracing Global Industrial Integration, WAIA Accelerates Preparation
Nowadays, the digitalization and intelligent transformation of thousands of industries has become an irreversible new trend in the global market, and AIoT (AI + IoT) has become a key tool for various industries to achieve this transformation, showing a strong and optimistic growth opportunity. Intelligent Internet of Things (AIOT) is a research model for the integration of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, which can be regarded as a new and in-depth form of Internet of Things application. Among them, IoT (Internet of Things) is the infrastructure of AIOT. Based on its ubiquitous network communication infrastructure, sensors and smart terminals, it can effectively realize the intelligent interconnection of man-machine-object, and the intelligent operation of data collection-analysis-decision-making, and thus become the cornerstone of the digital construction of thousands of industries and the upgrading of smart city construction, and also accelerate the rapid development of new industries such as computing centers, smart wearables, smart robots, and unmanned driving.
With the continuous integration and evolution of the global digital economy, the AIoT market at home and abroad is also showing the characteristics of mutual integration, redivision of labor, and common development. In this wave of global industrial upgrading, Chinese Internet of Things companies have undoubtedly become the first echelon in the international market and the main camp of innovative applications and market share. Corresponding to the vitality and growth opportunities of the AIoT industry are the external environmental challenges that cannot be ignored today: in the current international environment of complexity, changeability and increasing uncertainty, how to more effectively promote the integration of the AIoT industry and the flow of information on a global scale, and expand the all-round and in-depth communication, market promotion and innovation opportunities between Chinese IoT companies and the international market, has become a particularly critical issue for the current industrial development.
In response to these new trends, new opportunities and new challenges, WAIA's first overseas theme forum (Hong Kong Station) was themed on building an innovative ecosystem for artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. It was hosted by Mr. Hu Weibin, Chairman of the Hong Kong Internet of Things Chamber of Commerce, and representatives of industry associations and institutions such as Mr. Yang Weiqi, Executive President of the Shenzhen Internet of Things Industry Association, Mr. Zhu Zhentian, President of the Ningbo Internet of Things Intelligent Technology Application Association, Mr. Fan Yeming, Executive President of the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Industry Association, and representatives of key companies such as Mr. You Zhujian, Deputy Director of SenseTime Technology, Mr. Yang Zhitian, Vice President of Southeast Asia Department of Super Fusion Technology International Co., Ltd., and Mr. Lu Yun, Director of Intelligent Systems of the Automotive Technology Research and Development Center of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, participated in the forum. They shared in depth the latest and hottest industry trends, market size, number of companies, profitability, and future project landing opportunities, vocational education opportunities, and domestic substitution opportunities in the field of "AI+IoT" in the Greater Bay Area and across China, and provided a large amount of detailed first-hand data and industry observation experience. At the same time, they frankly pointed out the pain points, crises and possible solutions faced by the industry.
02Challenges and opportunities coexist: Hong Kong will become the first stop for AIoT to go overseas
In the first overseas forum of WAIA, senior industry guests pointed out that the revenue of some domestic IoT companies has recently faced a cliff-like decline, mainly because the digital layout of infrastructure in mainland China has been basically completed. Now the enterprise group has started closed-door research, planning and looking for opportunities for the next round of industry growth. It is generally believed in the industry that Chinese IoT companies have strong technical advantages, model advantages and product advantages in the current international market. Now is the right time to promote new opportunities for the industry to go overseas.
Looking to the future, Hong Kong, as the first stop for domestic IoT companies to go overseas, has unique window value and easier landing advantages, and has the opportunity to provide Hong Kong with a new city card of "new technology transformation" and new quality productivity based on the foundation of a large number of high-quality smart hardware companies in the hinterland of China. The guests pointed out: Looking to the future, all parties should accelerate the promotion of domestic IoT manufacturers to strengthen in-depth cooperation with their Hong Kong counterparts, and look forward to landing demonstration projects in Hong Kong.
03WAIA's second overseas stop: Hong Kong joins hands with Singapore to escort China's AIoT industry to go overseas
On October 14, the Hong Kong Internet of Things Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Productivity Council continued to organize joint exhibition groups and WAIA member units to go to Singapore to participate in the three-day 2024 Asia-Pacific Industrial Transformation Exhibition (Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific 2024) held at the Singapore Expo, and launched the Hong Kong Internet of Things Pavilion (Hong Kong Pavilion), the main venue keynote speeches and sub-forum theme exchanges, aiming to fully display Hong Kong's new enterprises, new achievements and new perspectives in the fields of innovative technology, green sustainability and artificial intelligence applications. The Quadrant Think Tank assisted in hosting the Hong Kong Internet of Things Pavilion theme sub-forum.
By linking the resources of enterprises, governments and institutions in multiple countries and regions at the exhibition site, the Hong Kong Internet of Things Pavilion demonstrated an inclusive, open, innovative and dynamic industrial ecology, which not only provided a unique perspective and more possibilities for data platformization and industrial intelligence, but also committed to providing more platform value and resource link value for Chinese Internet of Things companies to go global.
On October 15, at the Hong Kong Internet of Things Pavilion, WAIA launched the second overseas theme forum - Building AIOT Innovation Ecosystem Forum (Singapore Station). Representatives from the Hong Kong Internet of Things Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Shenzhen Internet of Things Industry Association, Asian Automatic Identification Association, Malaysia Export Trade Office, Malaysia Internet of Things Association, iFLYTEK Singapore Office and other institutions attended and shared keynote speeches, jointly discussed the development of AIOT ecology, displayed the latest products and application solutions, and exchanged business opportunities and challenges in the ASEAN market.
Ms. Steffi SUN of the Quadrant Think Tank hosted the forum and witnessed the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between the Hong Kong Internet of Things Chamber of Commerce and the Asian Automatic Identification Technology Association with the guests on site.

China's data industry galloping toward wider digital future
A visitor checks out Haier's booth during an electronics expo in Shanghai in March. BEIJING â With its far-reaching impact across various sectors, the data industry is rapidly evolving into a game-changer in China, contributing to the country's economic growth and digital transformation.
Last year, the total amount of data generated nationwide reached 32 zettabytes, equivalent to the digital resources of over 10 million national libraries, according to the National Data Administration.
Emerging from the application of data technology to develop products and services, the data industry is an industrial form that spans a broad range of digital activities, including data collection, storage, processing, management, application, circulation and transaction.
As the once abstract concept of "big data" has been widely integrated into business practices, it has unlocked significant opportunities for companies to enhance efficiency and expand their market reach.
The market size of China's database industry exceeded 52 billion yuan ($7.28 billion) in 2023, and it is expected to reach 93.03 billion yuan by 2028.
This growth is complemented by the data transaction sector, which has experienced stable and rapid expansion in recent years. In 2022, the overall market size of data transactions reached 87.68 billion yuan, accounting for 13.4 percent of the global data market, and is projected to surpass 500 billion yuan by 2030, the industry data showed.
Contributing to this vibrant growth, the number of data-driven businesses in China has surged from 110,000 to over 1 million in the past decade. These enterprises play no small part in maximizing the value of data elements and driving further expansion and innovation across the data industry.
"In this new development stage where data have become a novel factor of production, we are witnessing the emergence of new production factors, new data space, and new infrastructure, as well as the rise and evolution of new industry forms," said Zhang Xianghong, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University.
In response to the evolving landscape of the burgeoning sector, Chinese policymakers have turned their attention to supporting, advancing and guiding the development of the data industry.
Although the industry is closely intertwined with information technologies and the internet sector, it has unique development characteristics that require targeted policies, said NDA official Zhang Wang at a recent news conference.
Zhang said the administration is formulating targeted policies for businesses looking to make technological breakthroughs, explore data circulation, and improve infrastructure, which would support a more dynamic and innovative data ecosystem.
According to an action plan jointly released by the NDA with several other government organs at the end of last year, by the end of 2026 the breadth and depth of data element applications in China will significantly expand, with the annual growth rate exceeding 20 percent and data transaction scale doubling.
By aligning the burgeoning data industry with its broader digital drive, China has also accelerated advancements in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and e-commerce, among other digital domains.
The number of valid AI invention patents in China had reached 378,000 by the end of last year, with its year-on-year growth rate surpassing 40 percent, 1.4 times the global average, according to a report by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
Essential to these achievements is China's expansive digital infrastructure. The number of 5G base stations in China had risen to nearly 3.92 million by the end of June, representing a net increase of 540,000 over the end of last year.
A recent official report forecasts that as the construction of digital infrastructure accelerates nationwide, the data industry is set to maintain its rapid growth, further permeating other sectors and driving the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries.
Looking ahead, Zhang said the country would fully leverage policy tools to develop the data industry, including implementing tailored measures to bolster investment, nurture talent, and promote industrial clustering in the sector.

Oerlikon Barmag at the UTECH Asia / PU China
Polyurethane has become an integral part of our daily lives, whether in the construction industry, in leisure activities, in the manufacture of furniture, or in numerous other applications. The precision gear pumps from Oerlikon Barmag, which will be presented at this year's UTECH Asia / PU China 2024 in Shanghai (booth 230), impress with customized solutions for demanding tasks in the chemical industry. They increase the productivity of the often complex manufacturing processes for this wide range of applications.
Components for all cases
Oerlikon Barmag pumps reliably handle demanding processes in PUR applications, in the chemical, plastics, or paint and lacquer industries. One of the greatest challenges lies in the highly accurate and reliable metering of toxic or low-viscosity media. With the GM and GA series and the associated components, Oerlikon Barmag presents the optimum equipment for these applications. "The magnetic couplings used specifically in the GM series fulfill the expectations of the manufacturing industry with their low maintenance requirements. In addition, they meet the high safety standards of the chemical industry, e.g. for compliance with clean air (âTA-Luftâ) regulations," explains Andreas Heitzer, Sales Director of the Pumps business unit at Oerlikon Barmag. "If personal maintenance of a standard sealing is not possible or only possible to a limited extent due to a critical medium, magnetic couplings are the method of choice," he continues. If the product chamber of the pump must be sealed airtight to prevent undesirable reactions, magnetic couplings are used. Magnetic couplings are also used in vacuum processes. They also improve the suction behavior of the pump.
GM pump - a series for different operating conditions
Pumps in the GM series achieve precise dosing by feeding the flow with low pulsation. The multi-stage GM pump conveys low-viscosity media even under high pressure and the most difficult operating conditions (e.g. 250 bar, 100 mPas). The standard pump for many dosing tasks is the GM series in a square design. With the development of the multi-stage pump, the range of applications for the GM series has been significantly expanded. The round 2-stage GM pump has been specially developed for use in high-pressure technology. It fulfills the special challenge of pumping small flow rates with low viscosities. The pump serves flow rates from 0.05 to 20 ccm/rev and is therefore particularly suitable for the production of PUR molded parts, block foam, refrigeration unit insulation or sandwich panels.
GA series for higher viscosity media
Making products and processes more efficient is a constant challenge for manufacturing companies. This is why Oerlikon Barmag has added the GA series to the GM series, especially because of the demand for conveying high-viscosity media. The GA series is available in delivery volumes of 1.25 - 30 cm³/rev (0.6-144 l/h). It is designed for pressures up to 200 bar, for viscosities up to 1,500 Pas, and for temperatures up to a maximum of 225°C. With this pump series, Oerlikon Barmag offers customized solutions for process engineering processes where highly accurate and uniform metering is required.
For highly viscous media - the drum pump
The drum pump from Oerlikon Barmag is specially designed for conveying and dosing highly viscous materials such as adhesives, silicones and other highly viscous materials from drums and other large containers and for pressures of up to 250 bar. One of its special features is not only that it discharges highly viscous materials from the drum, but also that the medium can be dosed directly without an intermediate stop.
The gear pump and drum follower plate are synchronized so that the plate effortlessly reaches the bottom of the container, leaving behind only a very small residual quantity of < 1%. This reduces material costs and has a positive effect on the production process.
