Review: Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman
1 minute Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman is a fun story about a father’s adventure to bring milk home for his kids’ breakfast. The story begins with his son getting milk for his Toastios and realizing there is none. His father then leaves him and his sister to go to the store to buy some. After an intolerable amount of time, their father finally returns not only with the milk, but with a…

A Tip of the Hat to Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was born 220 years ago today, and died 150 years ago this year — now would seem a propitious time to add him to our annals. I love the photo above! “Action” photos of this vintage are extremely rare. Long exposure times were necessary in 19th century photography. If anyone or anything moved they would come out blurry. Miraculously this one came out (luckily he…

Deltora Quest: The Lake of Tears
Children’s fantasy book series about a quest to recover gems Friends, we have finally made it: my last review of last year’s Short Stack Reading Challenge. As I powered through this book in the final hours of 2023, it became clear that I was going to fall short of my annual reading goal of 80 books. Try as I might, I only managed to read 78. On the eve of December 2024, reflecting on the year…

Sergeant Stubby Goes MIA
Sergeant Stubby goes MIA, a book review
We were sent the book Why Did Sergeant Stubby Go to War? for a review. If you’ve been following the blog then you know I’ve been trying to get my son into reading. I thought this book would catch his attention because it involved a dog in an Army uniform. He likes dogs and is used to seeing his dad in uniform. How could he not like it? Unfortunately Sgt. Stubby didn’t stand a chance. He did…

The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit and Other Stories by Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath's book of children's stories and verse is funny, original and magical and has that repetitive rhythmic quality for easy reading
I had no idea that Sylvia Plath wrote children’s stories and I’m not sure why this surprised me so much. I think that my perception of Plath is of someone battling with depression and so my view of what her work may contain or the subjects that her compositions may be about has been tainted somewhat. That being said, a poem of hers called “Mirror”, which I must confess, is the only work of hers…

Staying Safe Online
I thought this was for teens when I first borrowed it and the cutesy drawings were a nice surprise. But it did make it apparent that it was written for a much younger readership. Some of it I found decidedly less cute. The clip art punted me right back to old textbooks and computer room graphics. And it leaks through. I’m thinking specifcally of one clip-person saying ‘I am looking at [the…

Speaking of formative books, when my friend read Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede last year, she literally said to me, “I now understand why you are the way you are.” Dealing with Dragons is the story of Princess Cimorene, who gets bored with her princess lessons and chooses to run away and volunteer to be a Dragon’s Princess where she runs afoul of Wizards trying to manipulate dragon…
